deb - Hi ronnie, where are you in the process?
ronni - Just starting the process
ronni - 2002- 2003 candidate
deb - So you haven't received the infamous box yet?
ronni - I have my portfolio, yes
ronni - Just reading all the materials, standards, websites
deb - Wow, they mailed them out early, I didn't get mine until last Oct. What area?
ronni - and you?
deb - I took the AC in June, so I'm waiting to hear.
ronni - I applied in June- exceptional needs- severe & multiple
deb - When is your portfolio due?
ronni - Feb 15
jean in nh - do you HAVE to do a portfolio?we can use 75 hours of staff development
deb - Well, that makes sense then, mine was due in April
ronni - i am waiting now to get my assessment testing dates
deb - Have you started on Entry 4 yet?
ronni - I am working on it yes- gathering all materials and documents
ronni - getting all my lesson plans geared towards the standards
deb - It is never too early to start as it is very time consuming.
ronni - yes, I have heard from all the websites and other candidates online
deb - Jean, yes you have to do the portfolio. Have you received your box yet?
ronni - I have not talked to anyone yet in my school area yet
ronni - It is nice for all of you to post all those helpful articles and sites
deb - It is important to pace yourself so you don't get over whelmed. I only worked on one entry at a time. Most of the lessons I teach fell right in line with the standards, they probably will for you too.
ronni - So now you are a CIW?
jean in nh - not sure what the "box" is?
jean in nh - are you talking about first time certification?
ronni - I heard that was a good thing to do- one at a time instead of working on all four
deb - Yes, a CIW, I feel I did well on my portfolio, but the AC was another story...no time to think, organize, etc. Now, I'm just enjoying my summer.
jean in nh - ac?what states/colleges are you in?
jean in nh - ciw?
deb - The box contains your standards book and all the information you need to complete your portfolio.
deb - CIW: Candidate in Waiting
jean in nh - thanks.....so,is it for first time cert?
deb - I am from MA. which recently did away with National Board incentives, but kept the new teacher sign on bonus.
jean in nh - oh......now,you're talking about something that I am vaguely familiar with..the National Board cert.Is that what this is?
jean in nh - new teacher sign on bonus?????????as in paying new teachers?a recruitment tool?
deb - Jean, I am an NBPTS candidate. I have my teaching certs. from my state, but am applying to be National Board Certified.
ronni - Im sorry to hear about that for you- so far NC will pay your fee and you get a 12% increase
deb - Yes, this is a chat for exceptional needs candidates. Are you a sped teacher?
jean in nh - Now,I understand Deb...my esl listserve has had discussions about that. Why do it?for example,in my district,we have a salary for Master's 15,but don't have one for nbpts
jean in nh - sorry.no,not sure how I got in here, but it's an interesting discussion, and I wish all of you well!!
jean in nh - take care all!
deb - The state did pay for $2000 of the fee, my district paid the remaining $300, but offers no incentives. 12% is great. If I get certified, I won't have to recertify my certificates with the state for 10 years. The state formally offered NBPTS teachers $5000 a year for 10 years if they agreed to mentor.
ronni - Im a stickler for pain I guess- its really not for the money- its for the challenge and I know it will help me to be a better teacher
deb - We also have Masters plus 15 on our salary scale, but this is over and above that.
ronni - That is great about the mentor fee
jean in nh - again, good luck to you all..think I might look into the requirements..are they the same for each state?since they are national board cert?
deb - Was great...if the state gets out of the financial crisis it is in something may be done.
jean in nh - so,who's your pick for gov.Deb?
deb - Yes, the requirements are the same no matter which state you're from. Different states and districts do offer different incentive though.
ronni - Just by reading all this materials and laws and terms
jean in nh - thanks again Deb;that clarifies it for me...I am always taking workshops etc...always looking for new ways to improve my knowledge..
deb - I am still undecide, but it looks like Mitt may have the advantage
deb - I'm not sure what you mean, ronni?
ronni - I was saying the purpose of the National Board is to make better teachers
jean in nh - nite all-great talking to you!here it's going to be a sunny weekend.Ronni, one final question, what state are you in?
deb - Jean, the process helped me put what I don into context. It really suprised me.
jean in nh - ronni, think she was answering a "political" question for me..mitt romney is a candidate for gov.in MA
ronni - I have only been teaching for five years so I need all the help I can get
jean in nh - so,i would need to get my district to pay for it?or pay it myself?how much is the cost?
ronni - yes, I was following your conversation
deb - If you're teaching severe and multiple, you probably know more than you realize.
ronni - Yes, I have seen that- alot of the standards I have been teaching
deb - I believe it was $2300. Check the DOE for your state, that is where I found the initial info. Then I called the superintendent's office for my district to see if they could help with the rest, and they did.
deb - Ronni, reading the standards is a good place to start. It would also help for you to make some notes to yourself as you are reading. Write down what you do that relates to the standards, it will help you later when you are answering the questions.
ronni - I will do that-thanks
deb - It may even assist you in choosing the lessons you teach that directly relate to the standards.
deb - What age level do you teach?
ronni - I teach 11 - 18 year olds
deb - A wide range, I teach 12-18 yr.olds, 6th through 12th grade.
ronni - What do you teach?
deb - I teach VP, Violence Prevention
ronni - Im actually a TMD teacher, but I teach a little of everything
deb - Are your students with you all year?
ronni - I mean my students are TMD, EMD, OHI, AU and sometimes even BED
ronni - yes
deb - Most of my students are ED or BD, but occasionaly I will get one or two who have only made a bad decision.
ronni - They have a lot of multiple problems- that is why I chose severe and multiple
deb - Last year, I serviced over 300 students
ronni - WOW
ronni - It must had been hard with doing the NB
deb - You'll probably find it easier to complete the portfolio. My students are only with me for about 3 weeks, but it was doable.
ronni - I commend you for doing this and I hope that you will see your name soon online
ronni - Thanks for the info and have a great weekend
deb - Well, it is almost 10:30, good luck with the process and remember to pace yourself and save everything thing you do to disc (twice) just in case. Good night, nice chatting with you.
ronni - Thanks I will
