carol in sc - hi NC what area are you?
carol in sc - hi wizzlewolf!
carol in sc - What advice do yu have for newcomers?
wizzlewolf - Oh Gee, oodles. Do you have a specific concern?
carol in sc - I just have downloaded the portfolio and am attemting to read it. How do I get started?
wizzlewolf - Carol, I have a couple of newcomer tip webpages. Do you want the address?
carol in sc - yes!!! thanks!
wizzlewolf - http://www.wizzlewolf.com/now.html This is called "If I knew then, what I know now". Here is another page to get started:
carol in sc - I hear that the process has changed for 2002-3 candidates. In what ways?
wizzlewolf - http://www.wizzlewolf.com/timeline.html This page is called "Ready, Set, Go"
wizzlewolf - I don't think it will change all that much this coming year. It changed drastically last year. What is your subject area?
carol in sc - i'll check out the web pages asap. My area is exceptional needs. How did it change?
wizzlewolf - Well, the portfolio format is different. There used to be six entries in the portfolio. Now there is four. The assessment center exercises were hours long and there were four sections. Now there are six sections that are thirty minutes long.
wizzlewolf - Are you on the Exceptional Needs listserv?
carol in sc - i do receive a daily email from an exceptional needs group but I haven't figured out how to post a message. How do you do that?
carol in sc - i am pretty sure it is the listserv you are talking about.
wizzlewolf - All you do is write the email and address it to: (Just a minute, I have to get the address for you)
wizzlewolf - Ok, I have the address, here it is:
wizzlewolf - EXCEPTIONAL-NEEDS@yahoogroups.com
wizzlewolf - Every time you want to send a message to the group, use that address.
wizzlewolf - That is a great list. You are very lucky to be in Exceptional Needs.
carol in sc - so i simply write an email to that address and it will come out on the daily digest and people will respond?
wizzlewolf - Yes, the email you write will go to all members on the list.
carol in sc - What is your area? Are you exceptional needs? I feel lucky to be in my field. I love my job! REALLY.
carol in sc - I feel so new at all this, I will read your website and see where to start.
wizzlewolf - Well, I teach severely emotionally disturbed K-12. I am Special Ed and Art certified in Florida. However, I am an Art NBCT.
carol in sc - Wow! How did you decide between art and Exceptional needs as an area to certify in? Are you in a k-12 school?
wizzlewolf - In 1999, the Exceptional Needs National Board Certification didn't exist. It didn't start until 2000. I teach are at a school that is K-12 (public) that is exclusively SED (severely emotionally disturbed)
carol in sc - my hat is off to you. I teach in amiddle school LD resource but I have a few ED children who are mild compared to what you do. Does FL compensate for NB teachers?
wizzlewolf - Oh yes. Florida pays the application fee and you get 20% of state teacher salary average which is about 7000 extra every year for ten years.
carol in sc - SC does something similar. Our district does not do anything $$ wise but offers some support groups. Let me ask you honestly. How much time weekly will I spend on boards inyour opinion.
carol in sc - I have gotten a lot of different answers from people i've talked with.
wizzlewolf - Well, you will spend a lot of time particularly in the months after Christmas. However, you can't put an exact figure on it. Everyone is different. You will spend at least 200 hours total.
carol in sc - Did you do a lot of research to create lesson plans?
carol in sc - Hi data queen.
wizzlewolf - No. Time for me was spent on videotaping and ENDLESS writing and organizing.
carol in sc - I have been reading through the stuff I downloaded and in entry 1 you have to answer a question about a student. What type of question?
wizzlewolf - That is the kind of thing you should write in an email to the Exceptional Needs listserve. They will be able to help you a lot in that specific area.
carol in sc - okay. Thanks for the info and especially your websites. I'll probably have more, better questions next time. I'll sign off for now. Thanks for being here. Carol
