stephanie - so - where are you in the NBPTS process?
spedtech - I have completed all the reading and planning, I'm 3/4 of the way done with Entry 4, and have started Entry 1.
stephanie - wow - i just got my stuff and i am now starting to study the standards
cat - is this about sp ed? i hope so
stephanie - i think so! lol
spedtech - I found the best thing to do was read one or two a night and make notes as you go. When you get through and start typing, you can just refer to the notes.
cat - i'm not sure how long i will last i am so tired tonight sp. ed drained me today
stephanie - thats my plan...i am going to 2 saturdays in a row of standards study workshops
spedtech - lol....aren't we all there?
stephanie - me too cat! I am close approaching my bedtime!
spedtech - where are your workshops located?
stephanie - tupelo mississippi - 2 hours from home
cat - does anyone out there have to do IEPs on a state wide computer system
spedtech - WOW!!!!! A little too far from NC....
stephanie - we have an OPTION of doing that
spedtech - we have infohandler for our ieps
stephanie - yeah - sped - a little too much of a commute! lol
cat - maybe this is a topic only about standards do not want to intrude
wizzlewolf - Hi all!
stephanie - but it sucks cat - so I do mine by hand or end up typing in the WHOLE thing manually anyway!
stephanie - hi wizzle
wizzlewolf - All excited about starting NB?
stephanie - excited and scared all wrapped up in one!
spedtech - setting up a template on Microsoft Word worked best for me before we got our program cat...
wizzlewolf - Awww, nothin to be scared about. Just a lot of stuff to do, but not that hard. You can do it!
cat - i hate doing by comp on the statewide sys, if you make a mistake a red mark goes by your name immediately is sent to state dept of ed and sent to local sp ed director and the sys isn't even working correctly
spedtech - good grief!! that's ridiculous!
stephanie - yeah - i know...in my head!...but this is my first year in a new class of preschoolers and it is TOUGH! - i have taught s/pr beforee this
stephanie - no kidding! what state cat?
cat - we are not allowed to do them any other way, unreal isn't it new this year
stephanie - does it have prefab goals/objectives - or do you add your own?
cat - i need som empathy, really, it took me 1 hour and 45 min to write one goal with 3 benchmarks on the new sys. because of sys and comp prob.
spedtech - not very user friendly, is it?
stephanie - yuck - you have mine! {{{CAT}}}
spedtech - Hi Carol! Spedtech is Melanie (benburn2000)
cat - see i was emailed a rerimand for not doing something in time on the sys when the blasted program had not even been installed on my decrepit computer. I went ballistic and am becoming an activist
carol in SC - benburn are you the one who had Q's about entry 1
spedtech - you've got it!
stephanie - you go cat!
cat - supposedly this will be a nation wide link up in 3 years to comply with IDEA
carol in SC - spedtech did you ever get any examples of what others did for #1
stephanie - but it doesn't sound individualized - OR wrotten in the IEP meeting (as a team)...hmmm...
stephanie - (but we all write "DRAFTS" right?)
spedtech - sure did....need me to email them to you?
carol in SC - I am so stuck. What I thought I'd do I don't think is right
cat - as soon as you begin the due process on the comp sys you are linked to the dept of exceptional ed and they have immediate access to the sp ed records.
cat - as soon as you begin the due process on the comp sys you are linked to the dept of exceptional ed and they have immediate access to the sp ed records.
carol in SC - absolutely carolbourque@hotmail.com
stephanie - what are your ideas for questions for #1?
spedtech - I sent them once, but there's no telling what my lousy computer did
carol in SC - I think I saved your email-I'll email you
carol in SC - we initially talked about the question document.
cat - stephanie they are not individualized because all goals and benchmarks come from a bank of curriculum that are exactly the same exactly as the regular ed program is this unreal or what
spedtech - I have a student who qualified basic reading but not reading comprehension on his psyc. My question will deal with how his basic reading truly compares to his comprehension.
stephanie - yep - ours too...i wonder what the IDEA parent groups think of that?
carol in SC - I'd like examples of what others did cause I think I am trying to be too complicated
spedtech - that's exactly what I did. I wrote down everyone else's questions that I got on the NC listserv....I'll send them to you.
carol in SC - so what type of instruction will you do to support your question
stephanie - will you me too? please! stephaniemcgreger@yahoo.com
carol in SC - what is the NC listserv?
cat - stephanie ours love it because they think it means access to the same curriculum as reg kids and terefore they will learn it
stephanie - yeah.
cat - ya'll sound smarter in sc than we are
spedtech - I see the student in reading pull out and in reading inclusion. I am going to examine his strategies in the classroom and build the instruction around how he learns best.
carol in SC - ok cat what's that supposed to mean?
stephanie - so melanie is in reading...what areas/levels do the rest of you teach
carol in SC - I am 678 resource Language arts
spedtech - NC listserv is run by NCAE (North Carolina Association of Educ.) People post questions like you do here and anyone who can respond does.
spedtech - Actually I teach 3rd -5th Grade Reading, Writing, and Math.
cat - really you guys are discussing how to instr. in a real topic rdg in KY we're ####messing with paperwork
stephanie - i am pseudo-community based preschool
carol in SC - OK any info you have please pass on
stephanie - huh? is that bad?
spedtech - Stephanie is mcgreger the right spelling for your name....it's unusual, so I want to make sure I have it right.
cat - does anyone out there use the L.I.P.S. program
stephanie - yeah!
carol in SC - you would not believe the new paperwork and general BS that we in SC are having to do now. Double the paperwork than before. And who does it help? Certainly not the kids
stephanie - the spelling - not the LIPS
cat - stephanie yeah to LIPS?
spedtech - thanks! I'll get it to you all tomorrow (just in case I fall asleep right after this!)
stephanie - thanks melanie!
spedtech - Has anyone ever heard of the paperwork reduction act, or is that just a NC thing?
carol in SC - thanks spedtech
spedtech - anytime....
carol in SC - must be a NC thing
cat - Carol bless you tell me about it. Unfortuantly SC inherited one of our dept of ed biggies to implement outcome based education, watch out
stephanie - i have heard of it - not experienced it though! lol
carol in SC - OK any other examples out there of what you are doing for entry #1
stephanie - cat - where are you?
cat - spedtech it is a real fed thing i order the document off the internet this summer.
spedtech - Go to the NCAE.ORG website....there is info there on how NC is supposed to be doing something about it.
spedtech - That's cool!
cat - i'm in KY
carol in SC - I am from KY
stephanie - oh - duh - you just said that! sorry! lol
cat - KY is not a good state to be a sp ed kid the criterion here is so high to be able toreceive any services
stephanie - ok - so about that #1!
spedtech - What are the discrepancies?
carol in SC - are your numbers low
stephanie - what were you thinking of carol?
cat - hellodlvlly
dlvlly - trying to catch up on what everyone is talking about
carol in SC - I just need examples of what other teachers are doing for entry 1 to give me ideas of what I want to do. I keep making thing far more detailed and complicated
cat - carol whose numbers? our numbers aren't low they just aren't identifying anymore than we already have existing units for, interesting
carol in SC - I have read and reread. I'll decied on one thing and then another
dlvlly - carol , are you a new candidate?
stephanie - lol - i am brainstorming the sae exact way!
carol in SC - yes I just signed up
spedtech - Do you have a particular student in mind carol? Any particular student really quirky that you need to decide something on?
dlvlly - what kind of classroom do you teach in?
carol in SC - i think I wnat to do something with a student's reading comprehension
cat - dlvly I am whining about a comp iep sys, others are tlkg abt something i don't understand but am trying what kind of candidate
carol in SC - she is 7th grade on a 4th grade level, not a fluent reader
stephanie - i am in preschool - so my game is different - but I am thinking about assessing language skills and modifying soemthing along those lines
dlvlly - Have you started any entries yet?
cat - carol are youlooking for techniques for rdg or verbage for an iep thing
spedtech - There are lots of strategies to use for reading comp. That's a good one to work with. (I hope)
cat - what is an entry
stephanie - yeah and easy to get in those fifferent levels of learning!
cat - hello browser
stephanie - hi browser hi laurie!
carol in SC - i am wondering if fluency is the problem or is there a problem with comprehension
dlvlly - there are four entries to be completed as part of your portfolio
spedtech - Sorry Cat! We are talking about Entry 1 for National Board Certification about Assessment Informs Instruction.
cat - does anyone out there serve 6 diff areas of exceptionality in the same room
spedtech - Could it be auditory processing?
Laurie in NV - Hi just signed on to see what's going on. New Sp Ed teacher just made it through 2 weeks
stephanie - I DO! CAT
spedtech - BINGO CAT!
stephanie - CONGRATS LAURIE!!!
spedtech - Welcome Laurie!
spedtech - That's a lot to be proud of!
carol in SC - if she is a low reader-should I focus on decoding etc. or can I focus on comprehension skills only
stephanie - i would weave the 2 together...
dlvlly - anyone teached sped today probably has a variety
cat - carol do both
carol in SC - hi laurie
spedtech - what is her greatest area of need? is she one that would benefit from phonics or from whole language instruction?
Browser4400 - Anyone have strategies for teaching seventh grade students reading on a 4th grade level.
Laurie in NV - I teach 3rd grade selfcontained
stephanie - lol - thats what we are discussing actually!
cat - i have all these ways to teach and no time to do it right anybody else i need a sisterhood going here
carol in SC - i am not sure phonics would be the way to go. The problem is that I really WANT to teach a new comprehension program and am trying to make it fit
cat - browser have you heard of timed reading, its cheap easy, great kids like it a lot
stephanie - then do it! your enthusiasm for teaching it will be evident
carol in SC - browser that's exactly what I am trying to do
cat - carol what is your new comp prog
spedtech - I found out that my student can't read four words but is able to match the same words in the questions with the answers on the multiple choice tests and makes A's in the classroom. Talk about compensating!
dlvlly - are you talking about Read Naturally?
stephanie - wow! that is a great skill to know!
carol in SC - no SOAR for success
carol in SC - what is timed reading exactly
spedtech - There are reading programs available for special ed???? WOW!!!! Oh wait! Your state isn't broke! lol
carol in SC - my kid compensates too
stephanie - lol
cat - carol i have a reading specialist degree and consistent longitudinal research indicates the success of a reading program is not so much the program but the teacher's belief, excitement of the program go with your prog
carol in SC - where can I find research on that
Browser4400 - There are so many of them at the 7th grade level but reading at the 4 or some even the third greade level.
spedtech - You go Cat!!!!!
Laurie in NV - I worked at the high school where kids couldn't spell or read fluently aloud
cat - carol it is out of FLA, i call it timed rdg, there is another name , i'll think ofit. 3 sections one page of oral phonics, go to sight phrases one page then a rdg passage, all are timed and each should be done in one min. progress is charted and very easy to administer,
dlvlly - I've use read naturally for fluency. a student is timed for 1 minute, a goal is set withis usually 20 words. The student then reads along with atime, 3 times, each at a greater speed. Then the student practices with the timer independently for 3 times. Finally the student is retested orally and timed by the teacher. I really works, and students fell good about their accomplishments. There are also comp questions for the stories they read. It incorporates all the senses.
carol in SC - so if my initial assessment shows reading on the 4th grade level and I teach specific comprehension skills that show growth over time (or lack of growth) do you think I could use that for #1
Stenz - Hi- I use Soar to Success with my students and find it to be very effective. High interst level books and good mix of fiction and non-fiction literature. Good practice and review of strategies.
cat - carol look up effective reading programs, effective reading practices that type of infor. I gave all my research to our local university
Stenz - Cat- I agree that enthusiasm of the teacher sells the program.
carol in SC - OK Stenz do you find that the strategies transfer to the content area
spedtech - Do you have to prove growth? I felt that you only had to write up how it would help form your instruction within the classroom?
cat - dlvly our programs sound very similar i am a sceptic but used consistently it really worked for us we opened it up to reg kids who needed help and really had an impact
carol in SC - see maybe I have this all wrong...
stephanie - no - you can reflect that it didn't work - I thought...
Stenz - I refer to the content areas using the skills that involve key vocabulary, clarifying and asking questions about what we read. It is effective
spedtech - what do you mean carol?
cat - dlvly where would i find more abt your naturally rdg
carol in SC - well i thought we had to assess, instruct, assess instruct, reflect
dlvlly - You don't have to prove growth, only explain why you chose an assessment and how you expected the student to benefit. You can write about what worke and what didn't in your reflective writing section
cat - carol i wish i could help but your questions are all related to that boards deal right?
carol in SC - i'd like to be able to show growth over time, I think
carol in SC - hi puzzled. me too
stephanie - maybe...i'm not sure - but you can reflect that your instruct ddn't work! technically. but i'd show groth too!
spedtech - dlvlly is right. I just checked my portfolio stuff.
dlvlly - I only wook with students for about two weeks, and I was able to complete the process
cat - hello puzzled i stay that way myself
stephanie - really!? dvl?
stephanie - that is motivational!
carol in SC - wow
puzzled - I started experiencing unusual sensation in my right hand, I would feel as though I had sprained or twisted, probably jammed it, but all I had done was turn my hand over.
carol in SC - yes cat this is about the boards
spedtech - I need a point of reference. My portfolio is due March 15th. Where should I be in the process by now? Anyone willing to share?
cat - good night I am too sleepy sorry if i mixed people up who were trying to talk about nat'l boards
carol in SC - so dlvlly tell me again how you look at it
stephanie - yeah! me too!?!
carol in SC - night cat
stephanie - good night cat! nice to meet you!
spedtech - by cat!
stephanie - (referring to sped)
carol in SC - spedtech I am just starting, not an outline or anything
cat - I must have read the meeting room notice incorrectly just tell out right next time and I'll understand
dlvlly - The program is called Read Naturally, you can probably find something on the web if you do a search. There is also a Spanish version. I used the program with Mid and HS students during a summer reading program, they really got into it. They had a bunch of stories to choose from at each level and moved along at their own pace. During the school year, I teach violence prevention to Mid and HS students
spedtech - Hey cat, you jumped right in there! Glad to have you on board!
Stenz - I began with entry 4 - find out what it is you want to show that you do in those entry 4 specific areas. I also collected notes, permission for taping,, and started a collection of parent contacts.
stephanie - i think i will find out tomorrow in those study sessions...want me to email you what I find out? or post it in the yahoo groups...
spedtech - OK...done that and like I said before, I am 75% done with Entry 4 and am starting on Entry 1.
carol in SC - so dlvlly a bit ago you sort of spelled out what entry 1 meant to you, can you restate that
spedtech - thanks stenz!
puzzled - i guess maybe i'm a little concerned, i wonder about life, children and adults, the ozone and nature. Where do we go from here and how? Does anyone in the roome believe in god?
Stenz - I am anxiously waiting for Nov. or is it Dec. for the announcement passing the boards.
stephanie - since our "reservation" is about up - do you guys want to meet back on the yahoo chat room that is on the groups home page?
spedtech - if dlvlly is the person I am thinking of, you did more to help me understand entry 1 than anyone else had. Did you do the one about behaviors interfering with vocat skills?
spedtech - sounds good....how do I get there from here step?
carol in SC - ok spedtech and dvlly- please explain your understanding of #1
carol in SC - i am off course
dlvlly - For entry 1, I focused on a student I received from a mid school who had a problem with fighting and controlling anger. I used 3 assessments to determine how to help this student deal with anger in a more acceptable way. None of my assessments were formal and I used the info to assist this student in dealing with anger. Did it work? I don't know, she was with me for only 2 and 1/2 weeks
spedtech - you are fine carol....
carol in SC - so how did you reflect
stephanie - hmmm - i dunno! lol - i think that if you go back to any of the email digests you can find a link to the home page and then go to the chat from there
carol in SC - thank you spedtech
puzzled - there never is enough of the grand old oprea of life around when you need it, ya know?
dlvlly - i didn't do lang, I teach violence prevention
spedtech - may I say that I am impressed?
carol in SC - me too
stephanie - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/exceptional-needs/
stephanie - are you in an urban district dvl
spedtech - Thank you Stephanie! I may find you again! lol
carol in SC - so if she's a low reader and I teach her specific reading comp skills, what is my question document
dlvlly - You reflect by looking back on your lesson and determining what you liked about it, what you didn't like, how could it be changes, modified, or expanded it. Makes you think of your practice and how to improve it
stephanie - we can stay here for awhile longer i guess - the next group isn't here yet
carol in SC - hi judy
spedtech - What strategies will work best to help (insert student's name) become a more successful reader?
dlvlly - Yes, second largest district in my state 46 schools
Stenz - Also, what kind of impact you are making on the student. Did it work and why? did it not work and why?
Stenz - blank can become a more successful reader, when you model the tools needed to get through the reading.
spedtech - OK guys, I'm moving over to the other side! I'll see you if I can find you!
carol in SC - so if I say what type of strategies, then wouldn't I teach more than one strategy
spedtech - you could, and reflect on each
carol in SC - ok I think we're outa here. You guys have been so good to help me tonight
carol in SC - i hope to meet you again next week
dlvlly - well it's 10:30, have a nice night everyone
Stenz - good nite everyone
