liz - Is anyone a "candidate in waiting" like myself?
roberta - yes
lambchop - Just registered this week. What do I do first?
roberta - cross your fingers.........take a deep breath.......scream a lot
liz - Great! Just needed someone to talk to who may be feeling the same way I am....apprehensive, nervous, anxious, unsure..etc, etc.
roberta - open the box
lambchop - How many candidate support workshops did you go to? Are they all the same? or do you take anything and everything you can get
roberta - everything
roberta - where is everyone from first.....
liz - I am in Kentucky.
lambchop - I haven't received my box yet, and I'm frustrated trying to get an email through to the home NBPTS website.
lambchop - Georgia
roberta - TN
roberta - speced?
speced - va
roberta - all southern folks
lambchop - Absolutely, teach and LD interrelated classroom, tgif
liz - Yep! A great bunch of people!
roberta - yes we are
speced - so how is everyone doing in the process?
roberta - getting along
roberta - peky--hello and where are you from?
lambchop - okay Roberta, how far are you?
liz - WAITING FOR SCORES!!!!!!!
peky - hello, Uruguay here and u?
roberta - no way....are you kidding?
roberta - still shuffling papers
roberta - TN
speced - waiting is the hardest part... especially near nov
roberta - i think i unwrapped the CD
liz - I am beginning to realize that.,
lambchop - I haven't received my box yet
speced - i sort of put it in the back of my mind after the assessment center, then when nov rolled around.... anxiety again!
speced - just hang tough
liz - That's exactly what I did. After June, I really didn't think about it much. But for the last week, I can't STOP thinking about it.
speced - do you know when you will find out?
roberta - OCD?
roberta - is that what this will do to us?
liz - Only that it will be near the end of nov.-begining of dec.
speced - the lack of a specific date was sort of.... unsettling
roberta - do you ever get beyond that overwhelmed feeling
roberta - or does it last right up until you get your scores?
speced - roberta- yes you will- once you jump into the proces and start writing
roberta - ok
speced - then you are too busy to get overwhelmed!
liz - The overwhelmed feeling lasts until you walk out of the assessment center -then its shock.
roberta - lol
speced - then its great once you mail the box off!
speced - then there is a slight lull, then you prepare for the assessment center
speced - after that there is another lull, then you get anxious for your scores
roberta - ok
liz - Yes, mailing the box off was a great feeling....but I also felt like I was giving up one of my children.
roberta - i feel as tho my body cannot keep up with my thoughts
roberta - but your child will come back in some way....
speced - that can be good or bad... heh....
liz - Where are you in the process, Roberta?
roberta - yes depending on the child i suppose
speced - all I can say is hang in there.... one way you will get through it
roberta - just getting started
speced - its such a personal growth and development experience
roberta - i will live i am sure....
liz - I guess I'm not helping you much. Sorry. The hardest part really is the wait.
speced - it's been a great experience, and continues to be,..... hopefully you wont regret it......
speced - roberta, you will live- once you jump in, you will just start to rolll..
speced - there will be stressful deadlines, but you will finish it... just work hard and stay focused
liz - Speced is right...it's the most beneficial prof.dev. I have ever experienced.
speced - liz, the wait is tough, but time will pass, and you will know soon enough!
liz - I keep telling myself that...
speced - I found out the strangest way, surfing the net one night, decided to pass by the NBCT site, and was suddenly confronted with the message that scores were available
liz - Was it good news for you, speced?
speced - I had to stop and think for a moment... very nervewracking!
roberta - and.......
speced - but then it all worked out...... but I guess it's easy to say so once it passed... Just hang in there!
roberta - i am hanging
speced - if its hard to wait, just think your day job willl keep you busy enough!
roberta - that it does
speced - roberta- have you started entry 4 yet?
roberta - the kids are the greatest tho
roberta - no
speced - when is your portfolio due?
liz - where are you from?
riley - I'm not sad but i think NB is making me become an alcoholic
riley - I am from NC
liz - it seems a lot of NBCT candidates are from the south
i spy - yes i have been seeing that too
i spy - guess thats good
liz - Yep....where are you in the process?
i spy - lost
liz - been there...not a good feeling
i spy - did i mention i got this box in the mail?
liz - Oh, THE box?
speced - people always remember "the box"
i spy - there was all sorts of paper in it and it still isnt making sense
liz - It's a bit overwhelming at first....just get organized
i spy - i think i put it on the curb for garbage pick up right after i called for a hair transplant
riley - when is your port. due? march 15th for me
liz - I started with entry 4...I already had documentation on that one
i spy - feb 14
i spy - nice for valentines day huh?
i spy - great for the romance thing
liz - forget romance.....
i spy - thanks.....
riley - I am spending so much time trying to understand the directions
i spy - yes....me too
liz - Just read and reread and follow them exactly
i spy - trying to make sure that i have everything in order and that i am doing the right steps
liz - that's a good start
riley - I prefer a good snowstorm w/ my dogs to romance
i spy - i guess we all have our quirks
i spy - a snowstorm with romance would be nice too
riley - guess that sounded kind of kinky
liz - pray for a snowstorm so you will get snow days to work on your porfolio!
i spy - do you get much snow there?
liz - not a whole lot....about 15 per year
i spy - we got a lot here last year.....feet
i spy - how about you riley?
i spy - are you in the mountains?
riley - no...but I live 20 minutes from atlantic beach
i spy - so i guess you dont get any snow.....
i spy - you could get hurricane days couldnt you?
riley - we may get a few inches of snow every year
riley - in 1980 and 89 we got about fifteen inches
i spy - wow--by the beach?
i spy - i bet that was an awesome sight
riley - yes...it was beautiful
i spy - my partner is from the north.....
riley - I may be so busy that I don't even notice snow this winter
i spy - i have seen many pictures of huge snowstorms
i spy - yes we are preparing ourselves for all of this work too....
riley - I teach trainable students/high school..how about you guys?
i spy - ld
liz - I teach primary LBD k-3
riley - I am trying to decide which students to write about...practicing my taping
i spy - how far are you riley?
i spy - it's hard when you have so many different personalities--each could contribute in some great way
riley - I am taking a prep class every Tues. it helps so much
i spy - we have one here too but it ends up being a big talk session about everything but NB
i spy - there are only a few others in my area that are cert.
riley - but all of guest speakers are reg.ed, I'd love to see a special needs portfolio or tape
riley - liz...any advice?
liz - the first thing I did was organize each entry into folders. I made a schedule for myself and timelines when I wanted to get each part completed I practiced videotaping quite a bit and I prayed
i spy - i am in the process of setting the schedule for myself....
i spy - i want to still have some sort of life outside of this.....so the schedule part is what i need to adhere to
liz - the first thing I did was gather documentation for entry 4 and started the writing
Morgan - hi how are ya?
i spy - great and you?
riley - liz did you get a chance to see an exc.needs portfolio? I would like to see one...just to get started on the right track.
i spy - we are all from the south......you?
Morgan - pretty good - are you all teachers?
liz - yes
Morgan - i am from new york
i spy - we will still let you in
i spy - yes
Morgan - sweet - i am a senior majoring in elementary and special ed
liz - i teach in ky....primary special ed
Morgan - awesome
i spy - now riley......there's some snow for you...
liz - riley...i did not get to see a special needs portfolio.....i couldn't find one and didn't know of anyone who had completed the process
Morgan - i actually signed on because i need some help for an assignment from a elementary teacher
riley - hey I drove to Winston Salem once to find snow and I got caught in a blizzard
i spy - to find snow?
i spy - couldnt you just buy a snow cone and imagine?
liz - what kind of help do you need, Morgan?
riley - not much snow here so i go to the snow...that was in my younger years
riley - lets help morgan
i spy - yes morgan.....
Morgan - well i was interested in getting responses to several literacy questions - pertaining to how you teach lit in your classroom
i spy - shoot.....
Morgan - are you interested
Morgan - wow - awesome - i appreciate the help so much!
i spy - we're teachers......we will try
liz - count me in
Morgan - there are about 10 questions i will start with this one: What kind of reading program do you use in your classroom?
riley - we work on survival words/functional reading...mostly vocational skills
liz - Eclectic - phonological awareness, phonics, sight words....
liz - I spy...you need a new computer
Morgan - How do you conduct your reading program?
liz - direct instruction - i try to incorporate each component of reading daily
Morgan - before i go on - again i can't thank you enough - i had plans to interview someone but they fell through - so thanks for doind hmwk with me on a fri. night
liz - no problem...it takes my mind off things
riley - i spy...i don't know how to answer your question
liz - what question?
Morgan - How much time do you devote to reading, specifically?
riley - i think i need a new computer too
riley - sorry it must be the beer
liz - well, that depends on the student's IEP...I'm not sure this survey was meant for a special education teacher, but I'll try to help you
i spy - i songster
liz - riley, drink pepsi
i spy - beer eases the pain a bit i suppose
liz - tylenol?
riley - yes liz i think i shall switch to mt. dew real soon
i spy - with a beer really eases the pain
liz - mountain dew has lots of caffeine so I am told
i spy - riley did you see the box?
liz - heh, songster, where are you
Songster - Canada, Manitoba
i spy - great white north!
Songster - Whats the meeting about????
liz - great!
i spy - now thats some snow too
i spy - snow and riley's beer
liz - are we going to talk about snow AGAIN?
i spy - morgan was seeking advice for some homework project
liz - so far it's been about snow and beer...suppose to be about National board cerfification
liz - guess she decided we couldn't help her after all
i spy - ok well i guess morgan got what she came for or she needs a new computer too
riley - sorry liz...no more talk of beer and snow
Songster - had about 3 inches this morning/didn't stay though

Sonja - EA social studies history.
judy3ca - Nan, guess what was waiting on my porch this afternoon?
naneb - did you get your CD?
naneb - Moe Books?
judy3ca - No, no CD, but I got a big order from bookcloseouts.
Sharon - hideeho!
judy3ca - (((Sharon))))
naneb - I love getting books! I am ordering more tomorrow
judy3ca - I got one I don't like--all the rest are wonderful. The guesswork is half the fun.
naneb - my 8th graders are excited about the historical fiction so, I am going to get the other books too
Sharon - which one didn't you like, judy?
liz - riley...you have to formulate a question about a student's learning and then assess to find the answer to your question
riley - liz...give me an example
liz - Well, for my entry 1, i had a student who was learning the names/sounds of the letters, but was having a lot of difficulty putting the sounds together to read words. I recorded anecdotal notes on a regular basis and began to suspect that he had phonological awareness deficits. My question was " In what aspects of phonological awareness does this student have deficits which are impacting his ability to learn to read? I then assessed by giving a phonological awareness test and found the answer to my question
riley - thanks liz....that's quite a question
i spy - good nite liz and riley-----sorry the conversation leaned towards so much snow and booze
liz - I spy....now it is books and laundry!
i spy - yes it has taken quite a domestic turn
riley - thanks liz and i spy guess it is time for tired teachers to go to bed ...good night
liz - Oh, well, good luck riley, i spy....hang in there!
