Chris - Hi Jodi
Jodi - Hi Chris
Jodi - What do you teach?
Chris - I taught second grade and now I am in the process of becoming a reading specialist
Jodi - I teach 6th grade in a middle school. I also am waiting for my National Boards results.
Chris - What state do you teach in?
Jodi - NorthCarolina and you?
Chris - California
Jodi - How is the weather - we are cool and dreary
Chris - It iis rainy here
Jodi - Do you know anyone who has worked on National boards?
Chris - What is your school system like?
Jodi - We are very test oriented and there is a lot of competition
wizzlewolf - Hello Jodi and Chris!
Jodi - Hi wizzlewolf - from newton, nc
Chris - California is very test oriented also
wizzlewolf - Ahh, NC, National Board country
Chris - Hi wizzlewolf from California
wizzlewolf - Chris, what part of CA?
Jodi - I am very nervous about the scores coming out next month!
Chris - Riverside CA
Chris - Yes testing is difficult
wizzlewolf - Yes Jodi, I bet you are!
wizzlewolf - Did you do Ex. Needs certificate?
Chris - Our students in California are tired of assessments
Chris - In our state you will get more money if you have high test scores
Jodi - Is there an approximate (sp) date for score releases? I tried EA Math
wizzlewolf - There is NEVER an exact date. You just have to wait and see.
Chris - What exams to teachers have to take in your states in order to become certified?
Jodi - I work with John who hopes to get his 8 points this year.
wizzlewolf - The only word is late November-early December
wizzlewolf - John?
Jodi - We take the NC End-of-Grade.
Jodi - You and he have communicated via this website. He is in EC also.
Chris - Exams to for teachers are expensive
wizzlewolf - Oh "John the Banker"
Jodi - EOG's are for the students and our schools are rated by the scores. sorry, I misread your question
wizzlewolf - How many years has been working on NB?
Jodi - Yes, John
Jodi - This is my 1st try.
wizzlewolf - Has John been doing this for three years?
Jodi - yes
wizzlewolf - WOW, he is very tenacious!
mkd - ok...talking about YEARS trying for NB is making me nervous. I just finished (sortof) entry 4 for the 1st time!
mkd - ok...talking about YEARS trying for NB is making me nervous. I just finished (sortof) entry 4 for the 1st time!
mkd - oops...sorry for the doubletalk!
Jodi - He is a super, talented teacher- much admired
Jodi - mkd, what area are you ?
mkd - EA- math
wizzlewolf - Mkd, don't worry about that. Sometimes that happens, but not all the time.
Jodi - Great - I am also
Jodi - mkd, where are you from?
mkd - Thank you wizzlewolf...I needed to hear that.
mkd - From near Ocean City Maryland
wizzlewolf - Jodi, some of NB is very subjective. You can be very talented, dedicated, and a great teacher, but not get an NB certification. The process is subjective in some ways.
Jodi - Thank you wizzlewolf, I also needed to hear that.
mkd - Jodi, I assume you are waiting for scores. That must mean you did this last year?
Jodi - yes
Chris - Exams in for teachers in California are the same way they can be subjective
wizzlewolf - WELL, you have to think positive and keep your fingers crossed. However, if you need to be a banker, just go for it. It may take longer to certify but you CAN do it.
wizzlewolf - Hi fbuquoi! How's it going?
fbuquoi - I am just beginning in this process. I got my box.
mkd - Jodi, Good luck to you! This must be a very nervewracking time for you.
wizzlewolf - Ohhhhh, just got your box....Did it freak you out?
Chris - Good Luck Jodi
mkd - No time to cross my fingers, wizzlewolf! Too busy typing!!!
Jodi - I have already seen how I am different in my classroom because of the process.
Jodi - Thanks for the well wishes.
fbuquoi - I finished the contextual information sheet. I am a little freaked out about entry 1 because what I thought was supposed to be specific apparently is not
Jodi - And good luck to you who are trying!
wizzlewolf - fb, are you Ex. Needs?
mkd - It took me two weekends just to get organized to get started. Keeping track of papers gathered throughout the week, etc is a part time job in itself!
fbuquoi - I was going to have a child learn to identify the numbers 1-5 but I have been told that that is too specific
fbuquoi - yes developmental delays
fbuquoi - do you have any suggestions about what to do and how specific to be
fbuquoi - riley where are you
riley - fb..why is counting to 5 too specific
wizzlewolf - mkd, OH YES! When you do NB, it is like a new "life" for the year.
riley - hi jodi
wizzlewolf - fb, are you on the Ex. Needs listserv?
riley - I am a new candidate in NC
wizzlewolf - Hi riley, Ex. Needs?
Jodi - I collected so much stuff it was difficult to decide which was the best to use.
fbuquoi - I was told that I should be much more general and use a broad goal like sort, matches, and catergorizes objects
fbuquoi - no how do you join the listserv
Jodi - Which part of nc? I'm from Hickory, nc
mkd - Is it too early in the process for the listserves to be active? It doesn't seem that the EA math one has much activity. Is this normal?
wizzlewolf - Jodi, that is part of the challenge. You have to really edit material and your text and do a good job at editing and making good choices.
riley - I teach TMD/high school..still trying to decide on entry1
riley - new bern,nc
fbuquoi - I really need help ----
fbuquoi - I have developmental delays kindergarten
wizzlewolf - Mkd, yes it is early, but they are up and running. I just told someone last night to get things started on your own. I bet if you started sending emails to the list, you will find others wanting to talk to.
wizzlewolf - fb, I will get you the address of the Ex. Need listserv. Hold on......
riley - i live 20 minutes from atlantic beach
fbuquoi - how do you join the listserv wizzlewolf
mkd - I am focusing on 3 different lessons that I teach in Sept. thru the beginning of Nov. so I'll have time to work on them and redo with a lesson from Jan or Feb if necessary. It does mean a ton of work right now though!
mkd - Thanks wizzlewolf. I've sent one or two messages but I'll keep trying.
wizzlewolf - fb, here is the address to go to join. When you go there, click the "JOIN" button in the upper right corner.
fbuquoi - I am so confused about the kind of lessons to choose and how specific to be. Can anyone help?
wizzlewolf - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/exceptional-needs/
angel1974 - hello room anyone from cayey press 222
riley - fb...so am I
wizzlewolf - Fb, that is WHY you need to join the listserv. There are Ex. Needs mentors that can give you specific advice about entries.
wizzlewolf - The Ex. Needs listserv is VERY active now. It has had 175 messages this month and it has been a "slow" month.
wizzlewolf - mkd. Some listservs are active, some are slower. Just keep trying......
mkd - Also have not received notice to schedule my assessment. Has anyone else?
wizzlewolf - Hi Bev!
fbuquoi - I wish that I had someone who had done the boards in exceptional needs to read for me, but I am the first. The only person I know who has done it completed the boards in regular 3rd grade. That is very different from me and that worries me.
fbuquoi - Hid Bev
Bev - I have received instruction s to schedule the assessment
riley - yes..you need a n authorization to test letter
wizzlewolf - fb, if you join the listserv, there will be tons of people who want to read your entries.
fbuquoi - Sorry Hi Bev
mkd - Guess I'd better call tomorrow to see what the holdup is...
riley - my assessment date is march31st
Bev - Hi back..I need advice on Entry 4
wizzlewolf - Fb, Ex. Needs candidates are all in their unique situations. You are not alone.
fbuquoi - How can I get the entries to them--I have never been on any kind of listserv before
mkd - Thanks Bev....did it come as a separate letter?
fbuquoi - When is your portfolio due--April 15?
wizzlewolf - Fb, when you join the listserv, you will start getting lots of emails from candidates and mentors. If you find a mentor to help you and wants to read, all you have to do is copy your text into an email text box and send it to them.
mkd - Portfolio due April 15, yes.
riley - my portfolio is march15th...too soon!!
fbuquoi - cool thanks wizzlewolf
mkd - oops..sorry.......portfolio due MARCH 15
Bev - mkd...it came in large envelope with assessment stickers and instructions (a verification to go ahead and set up a date)
wizzlewolf - FB, make sure you send it to the individual MENTOR's email address! Don't send your text to the listserv address....!!
mkd - ok Bev. Thanks again. I definitely have not received THAT!
fbuquoi - My goal is to have the portfolio in the mail by April 1-5 and complete the assessment by mid May so I can go to Disney World the first week in June
wizzlewolf - Fb, LOL LOL, Oh you really have everything planned don't you!
mkd - fb....Disney sounds great. I just want to sleep!
wizzlewolf - Bev, what do you need to know about Entry 4?
mkd - Bev. What is your cert. area?
Bev - fb, better check your dates. I bet if your portfolio is due 4/15, then your assessment is due 4/30.
wizzlewolf - mkd, I HEAR you!! First you cry (pass or bank), then you sleep.
fbuquoi - I have 2 small children
wizzlewolf - fb, what state do you live in? Are you near Disney?
riley - i have 5 dogs
fbuquoi - the test window is 1/1/03 to 6/30/03
wizzlewolf - Riley, WOW, 5 dogs? I am debating getting a second one.
fbuquoi - Mississippi--12 hours away
Bev - Wiz, I'd like to know if it would matter if I have 4 longer accomplishments that are very involved. (I had a mentor suggest 9-10 shorter accomplishments)
fbuquoi - I have one cat and that is enough
wizzlewolf - Oh, I live just an hour and a half away from Orlando.
mkd - Well, I have the most beautiful 10 week old granddaughter EVER!!!!!!!!
Bev - mkd, my cert. area is Ex. Needs
fbuquoi - What do you think is better --to go with something very general like learn to sort, match, and catergorize or more specific like recognize and count to 5
wizzlewolf - Bev, that is a very subjective question. The fact that they are longer or shorter isn't of any importance at all. It is how strong they are and how they relate to overall student achievement. You need to go with your gut about this. MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE ENTRY DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER>
wizzlewolf - mkd, congratulations!
fbuquoi - does any have a suggestion about my last question
ispy - hey riley----any snow yet?
fbuquoi - absolutely mkd
Bev - Wiz, I'm glad you put it that way. My accomplishments overlap learner, leader and family communicator. I choose to keep them the way they are.
fbuquoi - I know that I am ready for cooler weather here
idewteach - I am struggling with enrty 3, ideas for
wizzlewolf - Fb, to whom are you asking the question and what entry are you talking about????
riley - ispy...no snow but i love the cooler weather
ispy - where are you fb?
fbuquoi - Laurel Mississippi
fbuquoi - where are you
wizzlewolf - Bev, mentors are great to keep you on track. They also give great advice sometimes, but if that advice is against your gut feelings, you should go with what is in your heart.
ispy - tn
ann - have any of you passed?
riley - I need ideas for 1,2,3...feel good about#4
wizzlewolf - I am a NBCT.
wizzlewolf - Ann, what subject area?
fbuquoi - I was talking about entry 1 and to anyone who has a suggestion about how specific the goal needs to be. I was told to be very general but was prepared to be very specific
wizzlewolf - Riley, only 1-2-3??? LOL You need to take some time to think about this. That is a lot of thinking.
idewteach - Do you think playing a game with regular peers would work for 3
Bev - Wiz...I will remember that advice. To listen, but to make my own choices.
fbuquoi - I teach dd kindergarten
ann - i need advice on entry 3?
ispy - i still need advice on how to open the box
riley - i can't stop thinking...my brain is surely going to explode
wizzlewolf - fb and idew, it is very difficult to give that type of advice on a one line suggestion. You need to take those ideas and develop an entire lesson or unit and then present it to a mentor for advice. It is not just the "topic" that is important.
wizzlewolf - Ann, what subject area are you doing?
ispy - that could be messy
mkd - ispy......VERY VERY CAREFULLY!!! lol
wizzlewolf - Riley, you will not explode. Believe me, you won't explode!
ann - exceptional needs - mild moderate
wizzlewolf - Bev, also....listen to a number of mentors, then take what they say and add it to your own ideas. Maybe you can create a useful compromise.
Bev - Ann...I'm completing the same area. I teach high school at a center.
wizzlewolf - OK ANN, are you on the Ex. Needs Listserv?
ispy - i will soon be resorting to hard liquor
ann - yes, i am on the list serve
wizzlewolf - Bev, what kind of center?
riley - I am mild/mod. too at a high school
ispy - yes that sounds interesting bev
idewteach - I am one of the first to try and become certified in Ex. Needs in my district
wizzlewolf - ispy, this may be true. I drank a few beers during my NB year. LOL LOL
fbuquoi - call me ispy--
ispy - haha
ispy - more than a few.....
fbuquoi - me too. I am the only one idewteach
ispy - i am afraid i may include a bottle when i send in my box
mkd - ispy......could make for some very entertaining and creative entries!
fbuquoi - where and when
fbuquoi - where are you idewteach
fbuquoi - I am in Ms.
idewteach - OK
mkd - ispy....just remember to put your ID on the bottle!
Bev - Wiz...I have a number of mentors. Several, actually. I thought maybe I had too many. But that is how I found out about this chat room.
ispy - thats what i am all about-------entertainment and creativity
ispy - i dont think you could ever have too many mentors
fbuquoi - ha ha ha ha ha
ispy - take tips from everyone----
riley - ispy you have to tell how the booze affected your learning
ann - I am having difficulty deciding how to put socilization together with - teaching -
Bev - Wiz...a center for trainable mentally handicapped (plus medically or behaviorally involved)
wizzlewolf - Bev, you can't really have too many. Just remember to take everything with a grain of salt, then MOLD the advice into your own.
fbuquoi - all of my kids have multiple medical problems with the dd
wizzlewolf - I teach at an SED center. (severely emotionally disturbed)
idewteach - ispy where are you
ispy - tn
wizzlewolf - Ann, I don't understand why you would have trouble linking socialization with teaching. Can you explain?
Bev - Wiz...the mentor who gave me the chat room info. works at an SED center. Is it you?
wizzlewolf - Bev, I don't know. Where did you get this URL. Was it in a chat room? Listserv?
ann - first, i thought of a cooking activity or a game, but others say that is not instructional enough - and that would be to hard to focus on one student
fbuquoi - I have been told that worksheets are a very bad idea to use for worksamples. Is that true and what if it is like a teacher created material. An example would be a book about a book that the class had been reading where the kids had to cut, glue, color, and or sequence events from the story
idewteach - what are some of you doing for entry 3?
ann - fb i just keep hearing "less" is better
fbuquoi - I have a basic idea now of using children's drawings to help them recognize their feelings and those of others
ispy - concise and too the point is what i hear
fbuquoi - someone told me that general is best
ann - okay is it general or consise??
wizzlewolf - Fb, you have to remember that NB is looking for the "cream" of the teaching field. Worksheets are not really creative and do not symbolize great teaching practices.
fbuquoi - I will be either bald or white haired before this is over
fbuquoi - What do you all think about the worksheet question
ispy - thats funny you should mention the hair loss......
ispy - i thought it was all the booze
wizzlewolf - Fb, I think it is not a really great idea...
fbuquoi - Even if it is a book that the kids make to demonstrate understanding of the story read in class
Bev - Wiz, I'm getting lost here. I plan to join the listderve. Thanks for the tip. When did you receive your Cert.?
riley - something to facilitate participation in groups...or the environment. i read that somewhere
ispy - community involvement type things
wizzlewolf - Hey! I am living proof that you don't explode, loose your hair, become an alcoholic, or any other dreadful thing. You will all make it through this alive!
ispy - hey wizzle----
ann - do you think pec's is good for communication?
ispy - are you married?
wizzlewolf - Bev, I did it in 99, but I have been helping candidates for 3 and half years. I also run a website:
wizzlewolf - http://www.wizzlewolf.com/nbc.html
fbuquoi - Well I have to go for now==must put the kids to bed
wizzlewolf - ispy, NO why?
Bev - I plan to show the student using technology for sure. Seems like that would make an impression.
wizzlewolf - ispy, are you married?
ann - bev, which entry she is using tech for?
wizzlewolf - Sound great Bev
ispy - partnered
idewteach - For entry 2, I taped an Edmark lesson and then a phonics lesson that I use visual phonics with
wizzlewolf - Bye Fb, Great Good Luck!!
Bev - Ann, I think PECS would be fabulous for communicaitons!!
wizzlewolf - Ispy, why did you ask if I was married?
ispy - we are using this as a together type thing
ispy - just wondered how invloved your spouse was in all of this
wizzlewolf - Ispy, sounds so romantic!!! LOL
ann - idewteach are you using the worksheets with edmark?
riley - my dogs are very interested
wizzlewolf - No, I am very single and will remain that way for the rest of my life.
wizzlewolf - Riley, I am with you. I am going to have dogs be my companion!
ann - bev, what entry are you using the technology for?
ispy - nothing wrong with the doggies....
ispy - re involving them too
ann - does anyone have an opinion on using a game for entry 3?
wizzlewolf - Well, it is 10:00pm here. Gotta Go! Great Good Luck to all of you!!
ispy - see you later wizzle
Bev - Ann, technology for literacy. Maybe an adapted book or other lesson. \Students could use communication devices or adaptive equipment (like intellikeys keyboard)...definitely picture symbols for prompts.
riley - thanks wiz
ann - bev, are you nbct?
ann - ispy what do you teach?
Bev - Ann, I would think more creativity in the game would be expected. Role play, make up your owm game that goes along with a social skill (with actual steps)
Bev - Wiz, bye.. And thanks. I will visit your site.
ann - bev - can i email you with questions?
riley - i would use a game if i could think of one...as long as there are lots of things to write about that address standards
ann - does anyone hear that they only spend 30 minutes on each entry?
Bev - Ann, I'm also trying for certification this year. You can e-mail me and we could bounce ideas off of each other> hutch33312@yahoo.com
riley - have not heard that...but video is not as impt. as commentary
ann - bev that would be great - email me at royann@sbcglobal.net
ann - riley are you NBCT?
ann - idewteach are you there?
idewteach - yes just watching
riley - I wish...just a candidate like you
Bev - Ann, have you thought about the assessment entry yet?
ann - does anyone have opinion on restating questions? I heard that it wasn't really read just checked off with a rubric?
Bev - Riley, you've been on since I loogod on. What area are you going for?
idewteach - I heard it makes the scoring easier
ann - for asessment what do you think about edmark reading?
Bev - Ann, my district gave a training this summer and it was highly suggested to restate the questions to let the assessor know exactly where to find the answers.
riley - i heard something about restating questions in answers...i am mild/mod
ann - so do you think it is possibly just a rubric and very little is read?
ispy - i think they actually score every 5th one or something like that.....they just toss a coin on the others
ispy - hi ann i couldnt get in.....could read but couldnt type
Bev - I can't say that very little is read. I've heard that many candidates don't pass the first time around.
ispy - see......that proves my theory----the coin toss
ispy - perhaps the assessors are boozing it up
ann - I continue to hear it is simply a rubric and if everything is there - you are in --
idewteach - we can only hope!
ispy - and pray and hope that they forgot their quarters......
riley - i bet they have time rstraints but are pretty tuned in to what to look for
idewteach - Has anyone ever scored before?
ann - what is everyone hearing about funding? will the $ be there?
ispy - in what aspect are you referring?
riley - that is personal/ha ha
Bev - Ipsy, I used to be fun like you until I opened my box.
ispy - i thought so too.....
ispy - well like i said......i need help opening the box
riley - that is personal too
ann - maybe you shouldn't open the box until right before you send it in?
Bev - Ann, funding? What state are you from?
ann - oklahoma
ispy - i am serious about doing this thing but i am determined to remain calm and still have a life........
ispy - oh riley.......
ispy - where is your mind riley
ispy - have you been drinking again?
idewteach - i agree, but it is hard to do once the box is open
ann - ispy - there is no way to reamin calm -
Bev - You still have a life?
ispy - breath in and breath out.......
riley - i have been drinking ever since i opened the box in Aug.
ispy - haha
ann - is anyone else worried about funding?
ispy - you could tie that into something i am sure
Bev - Ann, I think each state has their own plan for funding.
ispy - no i just go to the atm and there is usually funds there
ispy - ann what state are you in
ann - well obviously no one is from oklahoma
idewteach - my state gives a $5000 stipend to their national board teachers
riley - NC pays for everything..but we pay back if we do not get cert.
Bev - Siyanara everyone!!!
ispy - nope
ispy - good nite bev
ispy - work on lesson 5--have a life!
ann - bye bev! keep in touch
ispy - report back next friday
Bev - Next Friday...
ann - what are other states doing for NBCT?
riley - well ladies? it has been fun. I'll see you next Fri with lots of questions
ispy - good nite riley
ispy - have a beer for all of us
ispy - maybe not.......you wont be standing if you did that
idewteach - bye ladies, I'm out of here for now
ann - bye idewteach - i may be i DID teach before this is over
ann - looking forward to next friday bye
ispy - well children-----it is time for this old girl to go to bed
