hilda - Hi. Congratulate me, I taped again today. Another great lesson, and I do believe I forgot to turn on the camera.
Webster - I am new this so I really don't know how all of this works...
wizzlewolf - Hilda, isn't videotaping fun? (NOT!)
Webster - I got it now..lets begin...What are the major concerns at this point?
hilda - Honestly, I thought I was brighter than that. Another day.....
Webster - any helpful tips on pulling entry 2 together?...What has worked/hasn't worked for you?
Ladybug - Hi! I am new to the group.
Webster - Hi Ladybug..I am too..
hilda - Webster & Ladybug, what areas do you teach?
Webster - LD Resource-grades 1-5
Ladybug - generic self-contained grades 1st-3rd
Ladybug - Did anyone get a scoring guide with their box?
hilda - I did not. Did you? I understood that they would come this month.
Webster - What is a scoring guide?
Ladybug - No, I did not but I talked to applicants in other areas who did. Just wondering if there was one for our area.
hilda - Since our area is new, we will get them late.
Ladybug - Thanks!
Webster - Please tell what the score guide is..what do you do with it?
hilda - Sugar, how is your taping going?
sugar - I am having so much fun video taping, I have been doing it all week.
Webster - hilda--what is your area...are you working on NB?
hilda - Yes, I am LD self contained, high school English.
hilda - And did you get any tapes dear Sugar?
sugar - You know, my kids are just real showoffs. If I want to show someone in need of a social skills lesson, all I have to do is turn on the camera.
Ladybug - The scoring guide tells the criteria for scoring each entry. It's a rubric.
Webster - How much progress have you made in pulling your portfolio together?
hilda - I can't wait to get mine.
hilda - Very little. I taped today and forgot to turn on the video. There is a great teacher at work.
Webster - Does the scoring guide tell you what you need to do to score a 4..or 3...etc..
Ladybug - I am working on entry 6. Next, I am going to start video taping. Any tips
sugar - I understand the scoring rubrics will come to us when the scores for the first round of candidates comes out. That shoud be soon.
hilda - Turn on the camera.
Ladybug - Yes, it tell what qualifies as a 4, 3, etc.
Webster - Is it the same as the scoring paths?
sugar - Taping tips- make sure everyone has been to the bathroom. I had a great tape going with a girl one on one- then after 3 minutes she said out loud that she really had to go to the bathroom BAD!
Ladybug - What are scoring paths?
hilda - Tape often!
sugar - Taping tips- be flexible, since the tape I started for social ended up being great for literacy.
sugar - Unless your kids are truly 'acting' you will teach however the situation leads, and at times, it does not go as we try to guide it in our original plans. Do not let that upset you. Keep an open mind.
Webster - heard about it at a workshop...gives specific description of a 4,3 , 2 etc..very indepth....sounds like scoring rubrics...
Ladybug - It must be the same thing????????
Kathey - on the social skills video, how about viewing a video together and pointing out (teaching) the incorrect social skills modeled?
hilda - Do you think the video you show will be apparent in the video tape that is scored?
Webster - if something happens that you did not anticipate while taping, you can explain of that in your analysis...
sugar - Yes that is the scoring rubric that should come out with the scores. Older areas already have it, since they have completed one cycle already.
hilda - You probably would not need to explain it. They know that "things" happen.
Ladybug - I am having trouble getting started on social skills video. Any suggestions?
Kathey - I thought about getting my students to model the incorrect skills - that way they get to be in a video too!
Kathey - lady...I think I am going with greeting, handshake, eye contact - all things needed for job interviewing. I'm in high school, so that will make it a little different for me
Tita - Hi i sent in for my box in September.. are there any tips on what I should do while I wait?
sugar - Kathey, is that communication, or social skills?
Webster - we have been told that we need to include in the commentary a detailed analysis of the lesson....what are others feelings about the analysis...Are you including it in your commentary?
hilda - Isn't analysis a part of the entry?
Kathey - I thin it is more social skills - I'm leaning toward phonemic awareness for communication one
Kathey - analysis is the third part of the writing about the video
sugar - What program do you use for phonemic awareness, by the way? I am tired of the same old materials.
Kathey - LIndamood-Bell
Ladybug - Tita- start pulling together materials about how you collaborate in the professional community and how you outreach to families.
Kathey - Tita, save everything! You're going to need a lot of documentation
Webster - the analysis talks about what went wrong....how you would go about correcting it..or do it differently..It is basically constructive criticism of your teaching practices and how you would/could improve it .......
Tita - any idea how long it will take to receive my box..?.. also should I start video taping just to get the kids used to it?
hilda - I have a video camera in my room daily.
Kathey - not until you have the releases signed!
Sue - Hi! Do any of you know yet what type of question you will be using for entry 4?
gurl - Can I talk to a teacher about photgraphy
sugar - If you do not already tape, the kids need to get used to it.
hilda - I have tapping in my room hourly.
Tita - do I make up a release form myself? or will I receive one?
hilda - I am using something about motivation.
hilda - You will get a release form.
Kathey - I have a selective mute and my question is going to center around what kind of modifications I can make and what I can do to help her become independent and employable
sugar - Tita, you can get copy from anyone with a box, they are all the same, I heard
gurl - Can I talk to a tacher about photography
Ladybug - Great idea Kathey!
Tita - thanks Sugar.. I will definitely get a start on that!
Sue - Sounds like great ideas. I am thinking of trying a self-monitoring technique for one of my students who is frequently blurts out.
sugar - You may also get a copy of the communications log and start keeping it daily
Kathey - Sue, what about a tally sheet?
Ladybug - Sue -Visual aids have worked great for my students.
sugar - Tita, there are several blank forms in the box for various purposes that you could copy from someone with their box already
Sue - A tally sheet sounds like a good idea.
Sue - Ladybug, what type of visual aids?
Tita - are the forms the same for everyone, even if its not ESE.. bc I only know of one person who has there box but they are Elementary ed..
Kathey - the communication log, verification, and student/teacher releases are the same
sugar - Tita, don't know about that, but I am fairly certain about the permission to tape being universal
sugar - emilee, aren't you waiting for the big day?
Ladybug - Put a visual of what you want the student to do, then put a visual on how to respond appropriately. You could pair this with a tally sheet beside it.
Emilee - Yes! On pins and needles!
Kathey - or, if the student can read - just put the behavior you want in words - chill and focus!
sugar - What is the latest? Will our scoring rubric come with the score report?
Ily - Help, I'm lost, I haven't got my box yet, I'm certified in ESE. Anyone willing to offer advice.
Webster - has anyone received any training on pulling all of this inf. together?..If no, where are you getting all of this inf....?
Sue - Thanks. I understand the use of the visual now.
Kathey - Ily you've come to the right place - we're all lost too!!! LOL
Emilee - Ily, what do you need advice in?
hilda - What info are you referring to Webster?
Ily - Where do I begin? What should I be doing now while I wait for the box to arrive?
Emilee - Am I the only candidate here? Are you all currently applicants?
Emilee - Do you have a copy of the standards?
Tita - I just applied , I am waiting for my box
Emilee - Find a good maid service...
Ily - No I do not, I'm waiting for it in the mail.
Ladybug - I just got my box.
Tita - Ladybug, how long did it take to receive the box?
Ladybug - About a month.
Tita - What state are you in?
sugar - emilee, what is your gut feeling about all this?
Webster - Some folks seem to be very knowledgeable about NB inf..? Just wandering if the learning process has been by trial and error or training?..This is my first time on and I have been very impressed by what I have read..
Ladybug - I have heard the turn-around time is now two weeks. ???
Emilee - OH! Do not wait! You can go to the files on the exceptional needs site. It's all there. Well, there are a copy of summary pages about each of the 14 standards. I formatted them on Word, but you can pull them up in anything.
Ladybug - SC
hilda - I think both. We have shared a lot, and many of us have training sessions in our states.
sugar - Webster, you just have to work it. You ask everyone and anyone questions and read, read, read.
Webster - Ladybug--where in SC--I am from SC too..small world
Emilee - That is the first thing I would do. I would download them and put a copy on your desk at school, under your pillow, in the magazine rack in the bathroom and in your car.
Tita - Ladybug, I am in Florida and I sent it in September, they said that I should get it in December..
hilda - And save everything that might be an artifact!
Ladybug - Are you in the South Carolina State program?
Webster - What program at State?
Emilee - I'm in SC too! Boy, don't we have it going on!
hilda - No, but I would love it.
Emilee - Am I the only person waiting for scores?
Ladybug - I is a program with my district that you work on your masters and NB at the same time. Sounds crazy doesn't it!
Sue - I am also from SC!
Webster - HI HOME GIRL
Ladybug - I am near Orangeburg.
Webster - no..great idea..kill 2 birds with one stone...
Webster - I near York, SC
hilda - Emilee, I do think you are the only one.
Ladybug - That was what I was thinking. So I am going for it!
sugar - Sue, where do you live? What levels do you teach?
Emilee - I got my master's last year too!
Webster - sue..where are you from?
Emilee - I'm in Columbia.
Sue - I live in Greenwood. I teach middle school self-contained LD, ED, and EMD.
Webster - hilda..where are you from?
hilda - Tempe, AZ
sugar - emilee, what is your gut feeling about the score situation? Will it be soon, or after the holidays?
Webster - hilda..I thought you were from SC??
Ret - Hi Emilee and everyone! Doing great...a late night...working with a student teacher. My bet for scores is Nov. 29th
hilda - Nope Arizona
Ladybug - The word is that scores will be send out the week after Thanksgiving.
hilda - Go Wildcats, Go Sun Devils!
Ret - How are you holding up Em (waiting for scores)?
Webster - Sue..I thought Lander College offered a NB course????
Ret - Everyone is starting to ask me if I passed....it's getting a little uncomfortable.
Emilee - Ok, I guess...My close friend and I are trying to work through the fear of only one of us certifying. I have only had one nightmare, and it was too awful to repeat. How are you?
Emilee - Webster, where did you say you are in SC?
Webster - little town between york and clover
Emilee - How is the support up there?
sugar - I thought York and Clover were little towns, what is in between?
Emilee - sugar, you are in rock hill?
Webster - not much...everything geared to generalist...not clear about sp.ed.?
Webster - suger, if you are in rock hill, we are only about 20 min...
avantgarde - sorry...did i just saw.."Wildcats"
Emilee - do you have peers applying in sped nb close to you?
sugar - no, I am in Lancaster, the only one
Emilee - ahhh! ok...if any of you ever want to come to Columbia and talk/work...let me know. I'd be happy to meet.
Emilee - perhaps you'll want to wait until Dec. 1!!
Ret - Em...how did you put on that graphic??
Ladybug - Emilee - any peer around you in Sp. Ed.? We are only 30 min apart.
sugar - emilee, you are showing off with your trick!
Emilee - Ret...just like I told Hilda a minute ago...I have a special button on my keyboard...just kidding.
Ladybug - yes she is, share.
Emilee - all you have to do is hit the colon and the end parenthesis over the 0. I thought everybody knew how to do this! WOW!
Webster - I don't know how we could do it, but considering all the folks from SC on line tonight, we need to figure out a way to connect and put our heads together..SC folks..Anyone opne to the idea of getting together..?
Emilee - Ladybug...forgive me for having to ask everyone over and over, but where are you?
Ladybug - I am all for it!
Ladybug -
Emilee - I would be happy to use what I learned last year as a way for helping others.
Ret - Ok Ladybug...how did you do that
Emilee - Ret...you did a semicolon and a 0...I said colon and end parenthesis...
sugar - Hilda, you will have to use the frequent flier miles to come to meet with us
Ret
Emilee - Ret, attention to detail!
Ret - I did it!!!
Emilee - YEA!
Ret - How'd you do that one Em?
Ladybug - See Emillee, you are a great teacher!
Emilee - I'm SO clever! That was a semicolon and then the end parenthesis. HA...this is fun!
Ret
Kathey
Ret Just playing around!
Emilee - Ok, now back to serious stuff.
Webster
Kathey - we all need a break from the serious stuff...
Webster:):):):)..I GOT ITTTTT.....
Ret - Yea Webster!
Ladybug - What about the SC group?
Ret - Any other tricks up your sleeve Em? This is fun!
Emilee - >
Ladybug - How do you make the mean one>
Webster - Open to suggestions on pulling a group together..
Emilee - No, I'm just irritated because you showed me up with the frowney face! I'll practice this week and come back with more next Friday, ok?
Ladybug - I am too!!!!!
sugar
Ret - Is everyone on here tonight from SC???
Webster - how do you the sad face again?
Kathey - nope - I'm north of the border NC
Webster - I am beginning to think so..THAT'S GREAT!!
Tita - I left to print out the standards and now everyone knows how to do the face!.. show me!
Emilee - I guess we just need to figure out where and when and who. We can get the where and when, and then start an invitation through the listserv. Is that ok with you Ret?
Tita - I am from Miami, Fl
Ret - Kathey...are you a new candidate or have you completed the process?
Kathey - i'm a newbie
Webster - Kathey--how far north??
Kathey - in the mountains where the forest fires are burning
Ret - I am from central Ohio. Em...yes...you can send invitations throught he e-group.
Emilee - Libraries are always a good choice, but they don't allow drinks, so that always bums me out. (but i'll live)
Webster - Well folks....it has been a pleasure chatting you....same place, same time next Friday.:
Ret - Tita, Emilee taught us to type the colon and the end parenthese (above the zero) to make the smiley
Emilee - sure...before you leave, what do you think about meeting in Columbia...?
Ladybug - How about over Christmas Break?
Emilee - sure...i'll be around.
Ladybug - Thanks! Good night to all!! Talk to ya' ll next week!
Tita
Ret - You got it Tita!
Emilee - yea! Tita!
Tita - finally! if only the certification were this easy!
Emilee - AMEN!
Tita - I am really stressed and anxious to receive my box!
Ret - That's very normal Tita...but you will feel MORE stressed and anxious after you open it!!
Ret - Just take a deep breath....and divide and conquer (divide into smaller pieces)
Tita - I can't wait! so how many dividers/binders/boxes, etc. should i buy?
Emilee - Don't open it alone. Don't open it at the end of a rough day. I opened it at a bar in 5 Points over a beer with a good friend.
Ret - I put each entry in its own 1/2 inch 3-ring binder. I had another binder for all of the other information and to keep copies of all correspondence in.
Tita - I figure you need a support group just to open it!
Ret - Tita...I'd bet what you're feeling is excitement rather than stress and anxiety....they are similar emotions!
Ret - Emilee...you took your box to a bar?? I was afraid to take it out of the house!
Tita - I don't know anyone who has been through the process. so there is some excitement but I am just anxious to see the amount of work entitled..
Emilee - I bought a hanging file box with a handle. I color coded the files (one per entry) and put EVERYTHING in there.
Emilee - I did! Isn't that kinda scary?
Ret - Tita...just remember that it will be normal to feel overwhelmed when you look at everything that's in that box. But when you break it into smaller pieces to work on ....it becomes more manageable.
Tita - so are you guys just waiting for your score? you finished everything?
Ret - The only day that I took my box out of my house was to mail it! I did take my entries to copy them and was very nervous the whole time that something would happen to them.
Ret - Yes...we're both "waiting to exhale"!
Emilee - Technically, the BOX stayed in the back of my car while I was in the bar with its contents. After that, the BOX went in a basket up in the top of my closet.
Emilee - Tita, what did you think about the standards files?
Ret - Emilee...did you ever hear what happened to the person in our group who's box was thrown away?? Did they ever get another one?
Emilee - I have no idea. I do think that when we were all "counting heads" after the due date to make sure everyone was ok, she ended up ok. I just don't remember the details.
Tita - I printed out all the standards, I haven't read through them yet.. I also ordered the Standards book but I haven't yet received it..
Emilee - Ok, I was just curious.
Tita - how long are the activities that you have to videotape?
Emilee - Ret, have you noticed the insane number of SC participants on the onelist? Or, is it just my imagination?
Emilee - Wasn't one 10 min and one 15 min? I have blocked out some things, like videotaping.
Ret - Tita...my videotape activities were each around 1 hour long...then I spent a long time going through and selecting the 10 or 15 minutes that best reflected the entry and standards.
Emilee - Is Ret still with us?
Emilee - oh, there you are...
Ret - Emilee...there ARE a lot of SC candidates. SC has a good support system don't they? And they have a high pass rate.
Emilee - Si! Mine were around 40 minutes, but I too selected the BEST slice of video.
wizzlewolf - Certain states are in competition with each other for the most NBs
wizzlewolf - Those states have a strong support system
Emilee - Hi Wizzle! To what do we owe this honor?
Ret - Who has the highest pass rate Wizzle?
wizzlewolf - Hi Ret, I have been here all night. Just quiet
Ret - Ahhh.....so you've been watching us goof off eh?
wizzlewolf - I don't know which state has the highest PASS rate. However, gee let me think
wizzlewolf - I am trying to remember if SC is the state with the most NBs
Emilee - Ret, you are just trying to make me feel better...
Ret - One of our teachers who passed in MC-Gen last year went to support meetings in SC...she said that they were awesome...nothing like what we have available in Ohio.
wizzlewolf - You should see at the National convention, like at lunch..There is one or two tables for some states. Like I think there were three tables of about eight people from Arizona, NM, Nevada.
Ret - Is that because of lack of support?
Tita - I am going to my first support meeting next week...
wizzlewolf - A bunch of states took up just a few tables. However, states like Florida and SC took up bunches and bunches of tables
Ret - Tita...please share any valuable info you learn with our support group.
Emilee - You know, we are at the bottom of most lists, but we are at the top of the list for "On the Move for Improvement!" ('bout time we were at the top of something positive.
Tita - you guys have been very helpful
wizzlewolf - Some states are great for support, some don't even know what NB is
Emilee - Where is your meeting?
wizzlewolf - Nevada doesn't have one NB yet (among other states)
Ret - I kind of wish the convention next year was somewhere other than DC....like Hawaii??
wizzlewolf - I don't like DC either, but Disney was no picnic
Ret - Did you get any goodies at the convention Wizzle?
wizzlewolf - Too expensive, crowded, hard to get around while driving
Emilee - Wizzle, have you found that low teacher salary is being combined with high pursuit of nb? Does that ? make sense?
wizzlewolf - Not a lot. I bought some shirts. You get a plain tee shirt with registration and you get a keychain (whoopee)
Ret - I thought they would shower you with all sorts of things.
Ret - Em...SC has a high financial incentive don't they? But I've also heard that the salary is lower than other places.
wizzlewolf - No, it is not that kind of convention. Actually it is not a FUN type of convention. Very serious. It needs to be more fun.
Tita - How are the incentives in your state?
wizzlewolf - It is very political and I think some of the people there take themselves too seriously.
Emilee - What I mean is, do you think that the states that have the highset number of candidates/nbcts...are the ones with the lowest pay?
wizzlewolf - Tita, you live in a good incentive state
Tita - Well I hope to see some of it soon!
Emilee - SC is offering $7500/year. My district is offering $5500/year on top of that.
wizzlewolf - Florida paid your application fee, right?
Ret - Em...are you saying that you will get $13,000 more a year???
Tita - I paid $230. they are suppose to send me $150. back to cover expenses..
Emilee - yes
Ret - Oh my....we get $2,500 more a year.
Tita - $13,000 a year more! that's alot!!!
wizzlewolf - Yeah well, then you have already seen some of that money because they paid the other 2000 so you could do this
Tita - did you have to pay the $2000?
Ret - Em....what would a teacher in your district make with 20 years experience with a masters plus? (may I ask?)
Ret - Ohio does pay the $2000 fee
Emilee - no, my district paid the app fee.
Emilee - I really don't know, Ret. I don't have a scale here at home. However, I will tell you what I make. I have a Masters plus (just got it) and 7 years exp. and I'll be making $38,200.
Tita - That's more than here in Miami..
Ret - Em...you're close to my district...you would make $39,215 here.
Emilee - Really?
Ret - Hey....I think I'm going south!
Emilee - COME ON DOWN!
Tita - I have been teaching 6 years and I have a masters and I'm making about $34,000
wizzlewolf - Don't go too far south. Florida is a lot lower
Emilee - COME ON UP!
wizzlewolf - Our salary scale is even less than Miami.
Ret - I've always thought that it would be nice if all teachers across the US could make the same amount regardless of where they teach.
Tita - Less.. my goodness .. i didn't think it could get any lower!
Emilee - My thoughts exactly.
wizzlewolf - That wouldn't be fair though. Cost of living is very different in different places.
Ret - One of our candidates was discussing this in another chat....and I think Mississippi is REALLY low.
wizzlewolf - I think Dade County is the highest salary level in the state
Emilee - I heard that SC is going to be off the pay scale thing by 2003 and on to performance pay (in addition to years exp.)
wizzlewolf - oh shoot, some of the places in the south get a lot less than even Florida!
Tita - I don't think so.. I thought Dade count was one of the lower ones..
Ret - Explain this more Em...do you mean that your salary would be based on how well your students do?
Tita - Well, most people think it's enought since we only work 9:00-2:00 and have three months off (ha,ha)
wizzlewolf - No, I don't have the salary sheet here, but I remember Dade looked pretty good, but I wouldn't want to live in Miami.
Emilee - The levels are like teacher, associate teacher, master teacher, accomplished teacher.
Emilee - NBCT's are automatically accomplished teachers! (didn't i get in in the nick of time?)
Tita - where do you live?.. sometimes I don't want to live in Miami!
wizzlewolf - What will be the criteria for each Emilee
wizzlewolf - Oh that is good...
Emilee - It does have some bearing on your students performance...but it is mostly on teacher evaluation through our ADEPT system. It is quite thorough and fair.
wizzlewolf - Well, I have to go to beddy-bye. I have to go to work tomorrow morning. It was nice chatting and reading.
Ret - Goodnight Wizzle
Tita - bye
wizzlewolf - Hey Em and Ret, if I don't see you... Great Good Luck.....They will be here SOON
Emilee - Good night! Thanks for popping in...
Ret - I hope so!
Tita - I've got to go too.. are you guys usually online Fridays? I still have more questions...
Emilee - yikes! thanks for the reminder!
wizzlewolf - Tita, good luck to you too little newbie. You will be in good hands. The EX NEEDS group is one of the best!
Tita - Thanks!
Ret - Yes....every Friday night Tita.
Emilee - i'm not usually, but i am going to try to be better. please feel free to post messages and e-mail me directly (emilee416@yahoo.com)
wizzlewolf - Tita, if you need a shoulder to cry on, email me. wizzlewolf@aol.com
wizzlewolf - Or if you have any "Florida" questions......
Emilee - or if you'd like to relocate...jk
Tita - Thanks.. you sure seem to know alot about Dade County..
Tita - Ret, i'll look for you Friday nights!
Emilee - ok, Tita! READ THOSE STANDARDS!!
Ret - See you then Tita!
Tita - Okay.. you can quiz me later! Goodnight
Emilee - nite
