susan in ga - hi guys
susan in ga - I haven't been here in a while - stressing out over scores for the past month.
speced - so today was the day?
meeha/ece/tx - 'evening!
susan in ga - Yes, wonderful for me but hampered by friends who did not make it.
meeha/ece/tx - today was "what" day, speced?
speced - congrats susan!
meeha/ece/tx - OOHHHH! Those scores!
susan in ga - Scores were posted for 01-02
meeha/ece/tx - Congrats, Susan! Glad you made it!
susan in ga - Thanks speced
speced - It's kind of a reflection day, since I went through this last year, now I feel like an old fogie!
susan in ga - Thank you too meeha
speced - All these people adding NBCT 2002 to their names!
susan in ga - YES, it feels good
speced - Now, the person who taught my support class certifiect in 1994, those were the truly insane.....
susan in ga - You were lucky to have support class!
speced - enjoy it Susan, you deserve it!
Steph in ms - so how many new nbcts are here tonight?
susan in ga - NBCT, 2002 here
annaboo - NBCT,2002 for me too
speced - i'm not new, but I hope that I'm not old (2001)
Steph in ms - WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!
speced - congrats to you alll
annaboo - ty -it was a special day - well worth the work
speced - definitely, you deserve it!
Steph in ms - i am nervous already for this day next yeaar!
kathi - Congratulations to both of you. I'm also 2001 and I read some of your stuff annaboo---remember me?
susan in ga - The wait was hard but well worth it
annaboo - i tried to send out thankyous to my readers today
annaboo - but i also switched computers mid way thru the process
rob - hello all.......
annaboo - thanks for your help
speced - brings back images of last year, doesn't it Kathi?
Steph in ms - it is good to know some real people passed - most everyone i know are retakes
rob - congrats to all the new NBCT's
riley - congrats to nbct past/present
susan in ga - I had two complete strangers read my entries. I found their names on a list at this site.this site
annaboo - this board was unbelievable and i would not have made it without this support group
kathi - It sure does!
annaboo - another new nbct
Steph in ms - were you worried about people stealing your work and using it as their own?
annaboo - no - i was only worried about passing - lol
susan in ga - These were people arleady certified
Steph in ms - ahhhh - good plan
speced - the help will only increase with more people certifying!
annaboo - wonder how many today
chbz FLorida - IHi, I'm another NBCT that couldn't have done it without everyone's help. I'm one of the first in Gainesville to get it this year in ESE.
susan in ga - I don't think we'll know the stats until Tuesday
susan in ga - congrats chbz
speced - yeah! I wonder if the number is above 25,000 now
kathi - Congratulations to you too!
speced - lots of kudos around!
susan in ga - I feel so blessed to have had help from others.
riley - can any of the new nbct help a mere candidate w/ a question about entry1?
annaboo - me too
susan in ga - That's what we
speced - you'll get alot of help here riley!
annaboo - fire your question away - i did well on 1 -
susan in ga - OK, this accomplished teacher is having problems typing>>> We're here to help.
riley - I wanted to know how new nbct did on entry 1..seems to be most difficult entry
annaboo - yes, i agree, couldn't figure it out for months,
Steph in ms - thats where i am now...
susan in ga - I scored a 3 which really surprised me. I thought I bombed it!
chbz FLorida - I did poorly the first time because I didn't know what they wanted . I redid it and did well. What is #1 now?
Steph in ms - so what do they want?
Steph in ms - assessment
susan in ga - It was confusing for me because I wanted to talk more about instruction. It's about assessment though.
annaboo - i rarely talked about instruction in my entry - only assessment
Steph in ms - could i do a functional visual assessment that will guide how I teach
susan in ga - Assessment guides instruction, only there is no where to really explain the instruction part in much detail.
Steph in ms - and then do follow up assessments on a specific set of classroom skills
riley - i read we shouldn't start "the question" with how or what...do you agree?
chbz FLorida - What ever you do make sure you use the same test to retest all the way. That was my mistake.
susan in ga - Yes, riley....Will is a better start
Steph in ms - aah ok
annaboo - i used would
susan in ga - Would is good also
kathi - I think they want to see assessment flow into instruction into assessment into instruction etc.
annaboo - yes - and once you figure it out it kinda is easy
chbz FLorida - Show how the test changed your teaching strategy
Steph in ms - i teach severe preschool - any thoughts for sample questions?
annaboo - the problem is with this entry is it's confusing until you start mapping it out and writing
Steph in ms - i *think* that what implies a one-word answer
susan in ga - What and how are about instruction and what you will do. Will and would lead more toward assessing to see if what your going to do will work.
Steph in ms - such as what starategy...
Steph in ms - OIC
annaboo - what or how solves the question; whereas will or would leads on to additional answers
chbz FLorida - Is #1 the old #1 & #4?
TeachEHS - Does anyone have any suggestions with what to do about a child who spits?
susan in ga - Ex. What or how can I help Susie read. Will or would using ...........increase Susie's reading
Steph in ms - what grade/disability
kathi - I think it is the old #1 combined with #4
rob - cover his mouth..........
TeachEHS - I teach Early Head Start, All of my students are two year olds.
Steph in ms - i am preschool too - this week i had a magical moment with this very issue...lol
susan in ga - TeachEHS - is this a learned behavior/habit or does the child do this when he wants something?
speced - yes, #1 and #4 combined
chbz FLorida - I teach severely emotionally disturbed elem in a center school
kathi - Steph in ms: what are your kids like?
Steph in ms - we tried tons of other strategies and then I just told the child "if you are going to...then you have to put your tongue in your mouth"
TeachEHS - He does it when he is mad or gets in trouble. We've tried ignoring it, we've tried time-outs but it doesn't seem to be working very well.
Steph in ms - and then i prompted her to push her OWN tongue in her mouth - and it worked! really.
Steph in ms - i don't know how or why - but it did lol
Steph in ms - kathi - ages 3-5 moderate to severe dis with typical kids in my class too
susan in ga - How old is he?
Steph in ms - 6 EN total; 5 typical
Steph in ms - in 2 classes
TeachEHS - Right now I'm doing this so i get to work with kids until my daughter is old enough and i can go to a college or university. My main goal is Special Ed.
TeachEHS - He's two.
susan in ga - Have you tried teaching alternative behaviors and rewarding when he doesn't spit?
Steph in ms - i would keep ignoring him - it takes a long time though and lots of mess
kathi - Can your question involve Improving a student's interaction with the typical kids?
Steph in ms - kathi - good idea
TeachEHS - we have about 22 two-year-olds. All of them are low income and we catch a lot of children with behavior problems
susan in ga - Question can involve any improvement you want to work on.
TeachEHS - Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
Steph in ms - i like the social interaction idea?
Steph in ms - how do you measure that?
susan in ga - Data collection - pick out positive interactions and use a checklist
kathi - Maybe time in group activities? I like the checklist idea too.
Steph in ms - the child i have in mind never interacts with my other kids - just adults randomly - so ANY interaction would be an improvement
Joy - Hi! I just found out today that I certified! Anyone else out there a new NBCT?!
Steph in ms - wooo -hooo joy! congrats
kathi - That would work--- your question could involve the things you do to support his interaction
speced - see you in class on Monday!
Steph in ms - yeah....i feel the light bulb slowly flickering...lol
speced - Do your homework!
annaboo - lol
Joy - Are you all candidates?
annaboo - no - nbct, 2002 - wow i just love typing that
Steph in ms - ok - dumb question - what do the questions start with again...
Joy - Me too, NBCT 2002 ECYA/ENS I love those letters after my name too!
riley - for entry1--i want to improve work behavior of a TMD high sch. student (can't accept criticism, follow directions, etc) how can I use will/would/strategies? any ideas?
chbz FLorida - Also how you change strategies by seeing what changes take place- remember keep same checklists or tests to compare
chbz FLorida - Also how you change strategies by seeing what changes take place- remember keep same checklists or tests to compare
speced - congrats! It's still nice to type those letters after a year!
Steph in ms - ok riley - lets think
annaboo - remember you are to concentrate on assessment , ie, would a bip improve TMD behavior in .......
annaboo - the assessment in doing the bip will lead to the instruction
Joy - Riley.... I had a similar question, don't answer your question before you ask it. Try why can't --- accept criticism and what strategies would work to improve him in the area ---- this is not the exact question I think you should use, but something to that effect. Entry 1 was my highest and that's how I approached it.
riley - maybe an adaptive behavior scale--but i need help w/question
chbz Florida - sorry, The computer shut me out
speced - what are you doing to improve his work behavior?
riley - i can use parts of bip--you mean behavior plan? good idea
Joy - Even though you may already know what's going on, I would use some sort of assessment to find out why to show that you ARE using assessment to answer the question.
speced - Integrate what you do to improve his behavior in your question, assess it in your assessment, then modify what you do based on it, show the link
riley - i can use parts of bip--you mean behavior plan? good idea
annaboo - yes - you've got it
Steph in ms - so how do you show what you did without really addressing your instruction?
kathi - Night All! Congrats to all you new NBCT's Enjoy your success!
Steph in ms - thanks kathi - very helpful!
riley - sorry..i have had two beers...starting to repeat myself
steph in ms - got booted
Joy - I answered my question which related to the types of instructional strategies which would be best for the student, then where it asks, I addressed what I would be doing. I had a lot of mentoring on this entry and it paid off!
annaboo - i showed the results of the assessment and then talked briefly about instructional strategies
speced - beers help the thinking process- by helping you relax and take a look at the big picture
annaboo - lol
steph in ms - except i am signed in on 2 names - huh?
chbz Florida - Good night- I guess getting up at 4:am to check if scores are in tired me out.Congratulations to all who passed and to all the new candidates- I found that I got the most help from people who didn't get it the first time. They seemed to understand my frustration more-
steph in ms - brb - gonna start over
Joy - annaboo -- that's what I did, but at first, my question and answer was written so that it looked as if I already knew the answer. I had to go back and change a lot. Still could use the same information, but had to revise
annaboo - good night chbz - congrats
annaboo - i think i'll go too, didn't sleep too much last night -
Joy - Well, I hate to leave, but candidates can email me at elliottfrm@yahoo.com if you need help I am willing to give back!
