ispy - when is your stuff due....
riley - portfolio mar.15--asses.center mar31
ispy - i havent opened my box yet.....i am still scared of it.......
ispy - had it for 4 months
riley - you are in big trouble!!!
ispy - ok ok---not really
ispy - are you sober?
riley - yes...and very tired..this stuff is draining
ispy - several other draining issues
riley - like what? You mean there are other things besides NB?
ispy - life in general.....
ispy - trying to keep home life satisfactory
riley - yes that is a problem
ispy - you too?
riley - i was hoping to get help on entries tonight..where are all the nbct ?
Gail - where are you guys in the process
ispy - panic.....
ispy - still putting info together
riley - that figures they get certified then abandon us!!!
Gail - have you done entry 1
ispy - no
ispy - still formulating.........
ispy - looking for ideas.....
Gail - What are your teaching areas
ispy - oh boy here we go with the boot
riley - i teach TMD/high school
Gail - i'm elementary resource
Gail - are you on the listserv
riley - i am moving along on entry1..can't quite get the question like i want it
Gail - I'm having trouble too - afraid my question is too broad
riley - i know..i want to focus on work behavior but the kid needs help everywhere
Gail - are you a candidate rob
rob - no im not
rob - my partner is tho
rob - just trying to gain some insight on this whole subject
disped - hello
Gail - i know next to nothing - was hoping some help was online
rob - well i dont know much other than what she is telling me.....
disped - I am working on entry 1 and thi is my first time in this conference room
Gail - hi disped
rob - hello disped
disped - is everyone in this conference working on exceptional needs certification
Gail - i am
rob - i have a partner at school who is working on this
riley - i think so
rob - so i am just an observer
disped - oh, I am a first time candidate and am feeling a bit overwemed
Gail - does anybody know if each question in entry 1 needs to be on a separate page
rob - well from what i gather overwhelmed came in the box
riley - me too...not to mention being worn out!
disped - Yes!
rob - did worn out come in the box too?
rob - well i thought my friend would be on here tonight.......
riley - What do you mean each question? I pray there is only one!
disped - except for Rob, it seems like we all may be working on entry 1, should we brainstorm or sormething
rob - i will leave you hard working folks to go to brainstorm......if roberta logs on tell her i was in here......
riley - the blind leading the blind
rob - thanks and have a wonderful rest of the holiday weekend!
disped - I think each section just continues one from the other
Gail - you mean continues until page 13
Tina - Gail, my facilitator e-mailed NB about the question doc
disped - I think so
riley - hi tina please tell us you are nbct
Gail - what was said
Tina - On your question document (which is attached to your assessment doc) you write the question on one page
Tina - that counts as one of your 6 pages
Tina - Sorry, Riley! I wish!!!
Tina - Are there no NBCT s on here tonight?
disped - can ou put your first assessme the same page as the question document
Gail - no don't know where they are
Tina - No, only the question itself on one page--at the top. it should be right after your cover sheet
riley - but your question doc. are evidences of how you formed the question right?
Tina - Yes, Riley. But they have to have the stated question. Hold on--I'll cut and paste the e-mail.
riley - for examplearent survey,observations,etc
disped - I am confused - isn't the meaningful question - just that a general question about the student?
ispy -
ispy - hey how did you get that riley?
ispy - ok what have i missed while i was trapped in cyberspace
riley - i don't know i was trying to type parent
Gail - question: how does the students disability affect his or her learning and/or behavior?
ispy - p
Tina - Hey, Ispy! Yes....disped. The question that you formed, stated and wrote about in your 13 pages...you have to attach it as one separate page along with your evidence and assessments.
disped - Gail, so after you formulate a question like yours, there is a wole blank page, can we start putting our assessments on that page
ispy - so cover sheet, question, then evidence doc
Gail - no according to tina
disped - so then you really only have 5 pages to use for assessments and evidence?
riley - so we use one of our 6 doc. pages to type one question?
disped - Crazy!
ispy - aghhhhhhhh
Tina - According to NB, you have blank page with a question on top. Yes, it IS crazy, and a waste.
riley - maybe we type it at the top of a document.
disped - that would work for me
Gail - can we put more than one doc on a page if we don't go smaller than 12 font
disped - at least then I wouldn't feel like I was wasting precious pages
Tina - NB said it was to assure equity and fairness
disped - yes, we can put more than one doc. on a page, I read that somewhere...don't remember where, though
Tina - Leave it to me to delete that e-mail. I'm still trying to find it.
riley - does it count as one of the six pages? I think we can..like use part of a survey part of an observation(counts as one)
Tina - Yes, we can...as long as it is no smaller than 12 font.
Gail - so entry one only deals with the assessment and does not discuss a lesson???
disped - has anyone started to type the student profile, yet
Gail - i have
Gail - i have rewritten the entire entry several times and can't get happy with it
riley - i hope to start typing in december
disped - I, also, have rewritten several times
Gail - are any of you in north carolina
Tina - I've written Entry 1 up to the assessment part. I've started working on 4.
Tina - Georgia
riley - i teach in new bern,nc
disped - the student I am using is a high school senior, so there is a lot of stuff about her, and I am having a difficult time condensing it down to 3 pages that are recommended
Gail - exactly what are they talking about when they say student "interests"
Tina - disped...one thing they told us at the NB academy was to follow the italicized questions to a "T"--then go back and highlight the exact answers. Anything that's not highlighted should probably be cut.
disped - Tina, that sound like good advice, what is the NB academy? Is that similar to the lab classes that are offered
Tina - Interests-----my student has Asperger's, so I put he has an interest in trains (perseverates on them, actually!) and loves to read.
disped - I teach in Dutchess County, NY
Tina - It's offered here in Georgia by the Georgia Teacher Center. They are trying to help teachers get through the process, so they pay our fee if we take these classes.
disped - I considered getting a GED as an interest for my student who will be graduating with an IEP Diploma
Tina - Riley, doesn't NC offer some type of support classes? There are SO many NBCTs there. It's impressive!
disped - Tina, that sounds like the lab class I am taking that is offered by the teacher's union, excep I had to pay half and the union paid the other half
Gail - yes, they offer workshops thru the teacher's assoc. NCAE
riley - yes i took a nb prep class...and the offer a 3 day retreat at Trinity Center to work w/NBCT
Tina - So far, the academy's been really helpful.
disped - so far, we have only met twice, we meet again next Saturday
Tina - Is anyone scared after reading the e-mails from people in the yahoo group that didn't pass this year?
disped - Terrified, is more like it!
disped - All this work and then not passing by 2 points..........
rob - it is simply a fact.....but one that we must overcome
disped - only a 40% passing rate
Tina - That's what really got to me....the ones who were less than 5 points away!
riley - i felt so bad for them
rob - every i dotted and t crossed
rob - no shame in putting your whole heart into something and failing....
rob - just try harded the next time
Tina - You are right, Rob! And they all had great attitudes about it, too.
rob - well thats the most important thing.....
Tina - I guess we need to get in the mindset that we may be on the 2 or 3 year plan.
rob - i am just the moral support guy......
disped - yes, perhaps 2 or 3 years
rob - dont focus on the 2 or 3 year plan or surely you will end up there..
Tina - Well, I'm going to sign off guys. Hope to see you next week!
disped - true
disped - ok - so we are all on the one year plan?
Tina - YES!!!
rob - thats the way to think....
rob - could you deal with it for 2 or 3 years..
riley - thanks tina
disped - did anyone use research in entry one
ispy - i guess i should have lined up at kmart this a.m. and bought a new computer
riley - i located a lot of behavior asses.,work skills etc
ispy - i was in a NB induced trance and could not move
disped - riley, how are you going to cite it in your entry
riley - i think you passed out
disped - the Nbpts site says don't footnote or use a bibliography
ispy - well that could have happened too....
ispy - i did have some unexplained bruises on my body this a.m.
Jo - you really do not need to be concerned about research and citing in your entry. You can refer to research as you would in conversation. Research is not part of the scoring criteria.
ispy - i thought the box attacked me
ispy - jo are you nbct?
Jo - Are you all current candidates?
riley - i am pulling info from different places, not one specific asses. tool
Jo - Yes, I certified last year.
disped - I guess because I teach in hs I am greatly concerned with plagerism, so I feel compelled to give credit where credit is due
ispy - current
disped - current
disped - Jo, are you saying it is ok just to say somethng like, "Current research indicates..ya..da..ya..da.. ya..da???
riley - finally a nbct--did you use one page to write the question Jo and does that count toward your 6 document pages?
Jo - Focus on the information at the beginning of each entry and in the how my entry will be scored.
Jo - You can put whatever on the page with the question and yes it counts as 1 of the 6 pages. Be sure you follow the margin/font recommendations.
disped - good question Riley, maybe now we can get the answer!
disped - So, we can put a piece of assessment or evaluation on the question pagen
Jo - You don't have to say what the research says. You can say you decided to do something based on your research. Scorers will not be focusing on whatever you cite.
disped - oh....................
Jo - I would do question documentation with the question.
disped - ok
ispy - ok how exactly did you do it?
Jo - The documentation you provide should support what you are saying in the commentary.
Jo - I did not do the current portfolio. But I scored entry 1 last summer.
ispy - oh so you score!!!!!
ispy - wait that didnt come out right.....
disped - lol
riley - i read that we shouldn't start the question with how or what---is that true? Is will or would better?
ispy - you know wha t imean tho
Jo - It is not important how you write the question. It should not have a yes/no answer though.
disped - i read we shouldn't start the question wi will or would, we shoud use how
ispy - i cant read
riley - now i am confused
disped - After I read that I changed my question to a "how" question..........
Jo - The important thing is that your question be tied to the student, the assessment and instruction
riley - we need to form a question to help ispy read
Jo - How should be fine. Don't fret over that kind of stuff. If you answer all of the questions fully, you should be OK
ispy - thank you riley
Jo - riley, what are you confused about?
ispy - could you just use me as your project......
ispy - why how will would ispy understand better if......
stenz - Are we talking sp. ed.?
disped - ye
ispy - yes
Jo - yes
riley - i've been reading too much about how to form the question.
disped - Jo, so in my question, I should mention my instruction?
ispy - stop reading and form the question---then go back and change it later
Jo - Not necessarily. In your commentary you have to show how everything fits together.
stenz - Well, I am the one who lost at 2 points on the big test. Could it be that I didn't have enough time to answer one window in on the ac test. OUCHHHHHH!!!!!
Jo - The quality of your question will not be an issue.
ispy - oh no..........
ispy - stenz....
riley - i dreaded entry1 but now i am starting to like it. Why is it considered to be one of the hardest entries?
stenz - I am miserable about it. I can't seem to shake it!!!!
Jo - stenz, what will you redo?
ispy - its probably because it is the beginning of this huge thing and we all swim around this pool of confusion
ispy - hey scool
stenz - I know that I need to redo transition planning and I think I'll pump up my score on professional language.
disped - Jo, I just reread my question and it addresses the problem and the desired goal. In my rough commentary I address assessment and instruction
Jo - By the time you finish you will think...... Why couldn't I figure this out sooner?
ispy - so after all this advice Jo, will you be scoring my entries?
Jo - Never again!
ispy - sounds like you had a great time!
Jo - It was very stressful. I wanted to score and see what the big mystery was!
ispy - well was there any mystery to it?
ispy - or just all hype?
stenz - Jo you were an assessor - must be a tough job?!%)
ispy - i have a feeling that there is about 80% hype in all of this.....not that i wont be taking things seriously
Jo - Scoring was not exactly as I envisioned it. It is very controlled, and precise though. I felt better about the fairness after scoring.
disped - Riley, I like entry one too. Before I started this entry, I thought I really knew my students, etc. I can't believe how much I am learning about what I didn't do and thought I did!
ispy - so in other words.
stenz - I realize that there has to be a cutoff point - I also felt I did my best - well it was almost the best
ispy - relax, follow the directions and all will be fine........
ispy - of course i know thats not the entire cheesecake.....
Jo - After being an accessor I do feel that I know entry 1.
disped - it's the directions that are driving me crazy
stenz - The process is definitely an EYE OPENER to teaching and reaching kids- by colleagues couldn't believe some of the things I was doing.
riley - can thw question be too broad..should i focus on work behavior of high sch.TMD student or behavior in all settings
Jo - broad, specific.............. it is not important. It is important that the question be related to everything else in the commentary.
stenz - I definitely believed in my mentor- she had also been a banker- and did over her portfolio- she was tough, but my portfolio was my best.
disped - Jo, in the commentary, should I keep referring back to my question, to make sure the scorers are getting it?
stenz - riley- keep your focus simple- you will be surprised how much you can do with one question that is very specific -don't get too broad or you'll lose the big picture
Jo - I think our time is about over. No you don't have to keep referring to it. Good luck to you all!
ispy - well all ........it is bed time.........
ispy - cheers riley
riley - thanks and see you next week
stenz - I guess I joined in too late- thanks everyone- till next time
