Marcia/1/Ca - I ready to chat Powerpoint... It's very addicting.
Marcia/1/Ca - Ginger and Denise are you here to chat about PowerPoint?
Denise - yes
Marcia/1/Ca - Well I would like to share a wonderful site. It has tons of slide shows to download.
Marcia/1/Ca - http://208.183.128.3/ce/ppt.htm It's called Cyber Exchange...
Marcia/1/Ca - The page is divided into two grade levels...and there are some real interesting shows..
Denise - what do you use your pp presentations for?
Denise - I just went to the site, do you want to talk about something specific
Marcia/1/Ca - I have an AVerKey. I show my shows to the whole class. They (the shows) are great motivators for the students..
GingerBear - hi, is this the ppt meeting?
Marcia/1/Ca - The first one I showed was on penguins..Boy! did my kids get to writing afterwards
Marcia/1/Ca - Yes, GingerBear...have you used PowerPoint before?
GingerBear - Yes, I have used ppt before in one of my classes at college, not since
Marcia/1/Ca - Denise the site has been down all weekend..but it's up now...I wrote the gal..and she said the school dist. was adding a firewall..
Denise - I have played with power point, but like anything I have to use it to feel comfortable
Marcia/1/Ca - I have had a blast playing around and creating shows for my first graders.
Marcia/1/Ca - Oh practice is the answer.
Deb - Where can I get the download for PowerPoint if I don't have the application?
Marcia/1/Ca - Deb, how about you? Have you puttered with PowerPoint?
Denise - I first have to understand the need before I can invest a lot of time into learning
Marcia/1/Ca - I know you can download a free viewer, but the software itself is Microsoft and not cheap...
Denise - because for me when it comes to the computer it takes a lot of time!
Deb - I have taken a half day class and now I am taking a Tech class and have to do something with Powerpoint also
Marcia/1/Ca - Among other things slideshows can be an easy way for students or teacher to share information..
Gigi/MO - I've started putting together my FIRST major Powerpoint!! We are going to use it for a conference presentation (if I get it done!!) HAHA!!
Denise - I do have the powerpoint software, so I guess that is a start!
Deb - I have Powerpoint on my school computer but would like the free viewer on my home computer
Marcia/1/Ca - Gigi...they can be fun for students and teachers. Last Fall I was subbing in a 5th grade room and we did a unit on bats. Each student had to illustrate on Bat Bit (information). Then I scanned their picture with my digital. The student typed in the text of their fact...It was an easy way to introduce slide shows to them.
Gigi/MO - Sounds neat, Marcia!!
Marcia/1/Ca - If you go to this site, where the shows are stored, you can also download a free viewer. http://208.183.128.3/ce/ppt.htm
Marcia/1/Ca - I have made a couple of short shows as motivation for my students. I did one on fact families that was interactive. The kids loved it and it was a reinforcement of what I had taught them.
Deb - Where did you get the pictures for the recent poem ppt?
Marcia/1/Ca - I have also joined a first grade yahoo group that shares slideshows (among other things) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/teachfirstgrade/
Marcia/1/Ca - That was Libby's poem ppt...
Gigi/MO - Another teacher and I are presenting at a principals' conference on Community Connections!! We are going to have pictures of when the community is involved at our school!!
Marcia/1/Ca - even if you don't teach first...the shows would be just fine for any primary grade...or you could modify them to fit your needs... that's whats great about PowerPoint...
Marcia/1/Ca - Hi Lilypie and Pat
Marcia/1/Ca - You can use any graphic with ppt...or import pictures from the classroom.
Marcia/1/Ca - Gigi -exactly...I did one of all the kids in my class last year as a farewell gift. With PowerPoint you can pack-and-go..the show for people who don't have a viewer.
Deb - Are the graphics from the PPT software or do you download from elsewhere? Can you tell I am a novice at this?
Marcia/1/Ca - I collected a bunch of links to share and posted them here for you all to look at after. http://www.geocities.com/goudiesfirstgrade//usingpowerpoint.html
Lilypie - How do you get pictures from the Internet to your PowerPoint?
Denise - Marcia, I tried to view your presentation but it asked where I wanted to view it, what do I choose?
Gigi/MO - Marcia--Another teacher is helping me!! She has made MANY pp presentations with music, graphics, etc.!! She puts them from the computer onto a VCR tape and then they can be shown through a VCR/TV!!
Marcia/1/Ca - Deb graphics can come from anywhere... Microsoft has some embedded in the program... but you can cut and paste them from anywhere.
beachgal - I do guess the covered word using powerpoint
Marcia/1/Ca - Denise you can download it or view it online.. I am not sure what your computer is set up like..
Marcia/1/Ca - Gigi, she's ahead of me. I have never saved a show to a video tape...yet.
Marcia/1/Ca - Hi Penny
Penny - hello everyone
Marcia/1/Ca - Yes, guess the covered word is fun...
leighaniml - how do you do that with powerpoint?
beachgal - I use the pictures of the children
Marcia/1/Ca - I think the hardest part of powerpoint is that you are limited by the graphics you can come up with.
Marcia/1/Ca - Hi Leighaniml
beachgal - I get many pictures from the internet
leighaniml - hi there I am just getting started with powerpoint
Marcia/1/Ca - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/teachfirstgrade/ at this site I uploaded some examples of how interactive shows can be...Up coming is St. Pat.s day..There is one up there called...Fun with GRRRRRRRR all the words start with gr...green, grapes etc.
beachgal - I also use it for working words
pat - I am just starting also...
Gigi/MO - Marcia--Not sure how she does, but I guess I will find out!! She also has made multiple family shows for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, reunions, etc.!! She's a real asset to our school!!
beachgal - I scan pictures pictures from my read alouds
Penny - thank you for that link.. do you know if there is a tutorial there to learn to make the slide show interactive like your fact families show ,Marcia
beachgal - into powerpoint
Marcia/1/Ca - I just finished one on the four seasons...that was one of the easiest to find graphics for...
beachgal - I am sounds and animated gifs- realy keeps them engaged
beachgal - I meant add
beachgal - the four seasons one was great
Marcia/1/Ca - Well I fiddled today and put a bunch of pictures up of my slide show open..and labeled where to find some of the most used tools..http://www.geocities.com/goudiesfirstgrade/pictures.html
Denise - do you all have one of those machines Marcia talked about AV....something?
Marcia/1/Ca - the trick with animation is not to make the shows "too busy" it seems to detract from being instructional.
beachgal - I have a projection sceen in my classroom-
beachgal - Yes- I agree animations can make the show or distract them
Marcia/1/Ca - Gigi, I'd love to know....I did find out that when you use the Averkey (or simialar device) you can run the show on the tv and tape it at the same time..
Marcia/1/Ca - I got my averkey on ebay, but I have seen them at CompUSA for $100...so they are not TOOOOO costly.
leighaniml - How do you go about getting your district t fund this technology?
Gigi/MO - Marcia--Thanks for all the websites!! I can't wait to go and check them out!!
beachgal - Our district gives it to us
Marcia/1/Ca - Denise the averkey allows the show to be seen on the tv, but it's not necessary..You just crowd your kids around the computer screen...I've done it before..
leighaniml - we don't even have our own tv
beachgal - the new schools - every classroom is getting a projection screen
Marcia/1/Ca - wow! beachgal...it would be something to use grant money for ..if you had it...I used my own money to get mine...I teach in a school that is going II/USP so you can believe there isn't a penny to spare.
Gigi/MO - beachgal--Do you have a "smart board" that it projects on in your room? We have 5 classrooms at our school that have "smart boards"!! (not mine)
beachgal - WE are very lucky here
beachgal - The projection screen has changed my teaching stule-
beachgal - Some schoold do have the smart board
beachgal - schools
Marcia/1/Ca - I know... using the computer whole class can... it seems to be a real motivational tool for my kids.
beachgal - yes- I do not use my overhead anymore!
beachgal - I scan all my math pages and poem
Marcia/1/Ca - To get started with powerpoint,,,,start by creating a simple show without too much animation..but actually the animation is very easy.
beachgal - a little bit of animation keeps them engaged
Marcia/1/Ca - hi BT... and accop.... have any powerpoint tricks to share?
beachgal - How can I share my powerpoints
acoop - through the tv or projection monitor
Miss BTL - Marcia.....I would love to have any powerpoint tip links to....could you send some my way. My addy is linked to my name
Miss BTL - hey, acoop.....howdy
Deb - Where do you find the time to teach and do all the other tech stuff?
Gigi/MO - We are VERY fortunate at our school to have TV's in ALL the rooms with VCR's and computer hook-ups!! The TV's are attached up high on the wall!! We also have 5 classrooms that are doing the emints program and have a computer for every 2 students!!
Marcia/1/Ca - I'd love to have my tv way up high...I hate rolling that thing to the front of the class...who knows what I'll know down.
acoop - sound great gigi/mo
beachgal - I do belong to that list
acoop - what type of things do you teach with computer technology
Miss BTL - ...and then there's the problem of reserving the tv ahead of time and tracking it down from the last teacher to use it....
beachgal - we have five computers in every classroom
Miss BTL - (((marcia))) thanks....I'm well on my way to being power point queen
b.t. - I came in late, but wonder how you get the children on powerpoint. Do you have a lab too? I also have 5 computers, but 28 children. Time gets short .
Marcia/1/Ca - I have been using powerpoint for over a year and I just figured out how to really make the shows interactive...I did one for penguins where the kids answer informational questions yes or no... and if they are right it goes on to the next question..If they are wrong it sends them back to where they made the mistake..
acoop - most schools here have 1-4 computers/class
beachgal - They go to the lab once a week for 50 minutes
Deb - Is your penguin slide show somewhere on the internet?
beachgal - Children need to be engaged - I have made a little booklet that goes with my powerpoints
Gigi/MO - I'd be interested in knowing if your students go to a computer lab with a computer teacher as a special class during their school day!! ALL of our students K-5 have gone to computers for 30-45 min. 1-2 times per week and they are thinking about changing it next year to where the K-2 students won't go AT ALL!!
acoop - I would put them into learning circles then b.t. unless you have lab access
Marcia/1/Ca - I don't think it's up there...but I sure could send it..I always wonder if people are really as gung ho as me or if they are trying to be polite.
Penny - Marcia, I can make a simple slide show with some animation, Do ou think it woudl be real difficult for me to make an interactive quiz for my first graders?
Marcia/1/Ca - Well if you did small groups you could probably have four at a time working together...of course, my kids would kill each other.
Deb - I would REALLY be interested in it
acoop - gigi/mo does that mean they only use the computers to learn about computers and not integrated across all learning areas?
Marcia/1/Ca - not too hard...Penny once you figure out the key... linking the graphics is the trick.. send me an email and I'll TRY to explain..
Penny - Thanks, I really appreciate that.
Marcia/1/Ca - Acoop, that's the advantage of an AVerkey or similar device...the whole class can watch...in fact we have invited another class to join us several times
beachgal - Using powerpoint is a great teaching tool-
Gigi/MO - acoop--It is to give them experience on the computer as well as do programs that help with subject areas. i.e. math, typing skills, reading, etc.
beachgal - I have scanned their handwriting paper and used it as an interactive writing lesson
acoop - One school I work at has four rooms to a blaock which are built around a computer cluster mini lab are that each room has an internal door that opens onto this are of approx 30 computers and the children can use it all day throughout all lessons as the teacher sees fit unless computers are booked by one of the four classes in that block for a period.
Marcia/1/Ca - Gigi, we have one old 486 in the classroom...that belongs to the school. I brought an old pent2...of mine...that's what we are using.
acoop - Yes I have seen those AVerkey divices used.
Gigi/MO - acoop--WOW!! What access you have!!
Deb - beachgal, please explain how you use the handwriting paper for an interactive writing lesson. My brain is not working tonight.
acoop - I might sound pushy I don't mean to gigi/mo I am studying computer education at the moment down here in Australia and I need to look at global integration of learning networks across the whole curriculum.
Gigi/MO - acoop--What grade is that for or can the whole school use it if they sign up for it?!?
Marcia/1/Ca - I am jealous Gigi...My goal someday is to teach computer lab..but here in California they only have technicians, not teachers in the computer lab.
b.t. - Wow, the mini lab sounds great. We don't have a room for a lab .
acoop - so I'm fishing for info.
beachgal - I also use the internet every day to find pictures
acoop - The mini lab is great it is a private school and yes they have the money to resource it.
Marcia/1/Ca - I know powerpoint has a PEN tool, but I haven't used it...is that what you used with the handwriting paper?
acoop - But do your students use the net beachgal? I liked presentation 9 better then powerpoint personally but powerpoint is the one the schools all have.
beachgal - I have a whiteboard and we write onto the board-I call children up to make the letters
beachgal - I search for them-
Gigi/MO - Marcia--One of my REALLY good friends has been the computer lab teacher here for several years and THEY are thinking about cutting it out for K-2 students and putting her back in the classroom for her 31st year of teaching!! Some of us think they are missing the boat by not having it for K-2!!
Marcia/1/Ca - we are networked at school..but with a 486 you can't do much!!
beachgal - 496=slow
Gigi/MO - acoop--That's fine!! Sounds interesting and this is a GREAT place to get info!!
beachgal - I usually do my work at home , save it to a zip and then use in school
Marcia/1/Ca - I have been considering doing a masters on early literacy and technology..I found a great KWHL chart that supports technology!
acoop - I think it is important for k-2 to have computer access,. What sort of network did you use Marcia/1/ca?
Marcia/1/Ca - <VBG>
b.t. - Great ideas, but it is late in SC and school begins early. Thanks for your ideas.
beachgal - a chart that supports tech- can you share it
Marcia/1/Ca - the whole district is networked..so if the lines are down..you can't even use word on the classroom computer...now they have set up the Scholastic reading program and the teachers are laughing.
Marcia/1/Ca - thanks for coming
beachgal - back to powerpoint- a very powerful teaching tool!
Marcia/1/Ca - theiberjam..we're talking powerpoint and technology
thiberjam - Hi, I am a student at the University of New Orleans and I am conducting an interview for a class project and was wondering if any one of you would like to participate in it.
Marcia/1/Ca - what else would you like to know beachgal?
beachgal - how do you get children using powerpoint!
Gigi/MO - acoop--K-2 will have 2-3 computers in each classroom and /or the teachers can take their classes to the lab BUT we don't know if teachers will do that or if they will know what to do if there are problems!!
Marcia/1/Ca - I have a small project planned for my kids in the next few weeks..We have been learning poetry..I will have them illustrate their favorite poem..then I'll scan it..and they can type the text in...we will discuss that a slide show is made of individual slides and can be from different people...not bad for first grade.
Gigi/MO - With the computer teacher THERE, she knew what to do!!
beachgal - I use it as a teaching tool that keeps first graders engaged
beachgal - Yes- they love seeing their work
Marcia/1/Ca - any idea you can use with a kid pix slide show can be done with powerpoint...the background is more difficult but the teacher can do some parts
Gigi/MO - beachgal and Marcia--Do you use pp every day?
acoop - One thing i am looking at gigi?mo is how learning networks can be used to promote learning in an educational setting> will your shcool have inservices for the class teachers who are not sure of how to integrate computer or their own personal skills?
beachgal - I do - every day every lesson
Marcia/1/Ca - not ever day...at school...but at least twice a week...right now we are under such a watch because the school is underperforming..
Gigi/MO - beachgal--How do you have time to put ALL of those together!!
acoop - What else do you use the computer for beachgal
beachgal - I spend alot of time at home
Marcia/1/Ca - we have a huge bilingual population..there again ppt can be great for ELL students ..you can use pictures instead of words to demonstrate ideas.
beachgal - but once the frame is in- it is faster
beachgal - That is basically why I use it- realia
Gigi/MO - acoop--We have WONDERFUL workshops for the computer in our district in the summers along with other topics also!!
Marcia/1/Ca - our district has classes available for teachers...but many are embarrassed.. I have a few teachers on my wing..who have been asking me to share...ideas and how-to's.
beachgal - I have given workshops, too- after school
Marcia/1/Ca - If you have the opportunity to take a INTEL Teach to the Future program..jump at the option...I loved it...and it came with software!!!!!!!!
acoop - i saw that one on their site Marcia/1/ca
Marcia/1/Ca - Well teachers....It's after 8 and I haven't had dinner yet...school tomorrow...thank you for such an interesting converstation...
Gigi/MO - Thanks for all the info!! I better go get some other things done before going to bed!! Thanks again everyone!!
beachgal - I use the computer for.. plans. seaching for info...
beachgal - THank you ..
Marcia/1/Ca - My address is at the top of the page...if you want to ask more questions
Penny - Marcia, thank you for putting this together, I know ididnt have much to contribute, sorry, but its after 11 here in NY and I am trying to finish a few things to get back in ethswing of things, we havent had teh students in school here since last Wednesday
Marcia/1/Ca - oh then try http://members.aol.com/MGoudie/index.html
acoop - I have not used powerpoint in teaching yet I have seen it used where students inpairs researched a set topic area of a given country and put their findings together into a power point presentation for the rest of the class. So each pair had their own presentation on a different aspect of the given country.
acoop - bye gigi/mo thanks for the insight
Marcia/1/Ca - Thanks for coming Penny..wish it could have been earlier..but here in Ca.... I wouldn't have been home from school... (I forgot today was a holiday)
Marcia/1/Ca - acoop..that's a wonderful idea for upper grade students....bye alll!!!!!!!!!!!!!
acoop - Beachgal do your students access the computer much
acoop - I guess you have al loged off so I will too bye.
beachgal - well they are first graders and our district is really concerned about getting viruses so
