Barb/2/NE - Hello! Welcome to the Private and Parochial teachers chat!
Barb/2/NE - great! as you can see, I'm in Nebraska, teaching 2nd grade, what grade level are you?
TS - I recently found this site and I am so glad!!
TS - I am in Illinois teaching third
TS - I have a big problem and need some advice!!
Barb/2/NE - I've been with Teachers.net for over a year now, It's the first site I check everyday, after my email! I've gotten so many ideas!
Barb/2/NE - I'll try to help.
Barb/2/NE - Hello Lynn! Welcome!
TS - Our principal always hangs out in the second grade class (during the day) I have had so many parents complain this year because it went on last year. what do I do
Barb/2/NE - Really? how odd? Is she/he new?
TS - She is a new principal.
Lynn/ms/pa - Principals often visit primaries more often
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, you are doing great! I'm glad you are here, I always wanted to know what your MS stood for?
Lynn/ms/pa - middle school
Lynn/ms/pa - probably should change to science
Barb/2/NE - TS, have you talked to your pastor? or would that be uncomfortable?
TS - This has been really hard 'cause last year I was on maternity leave but this year I really am noticing it more.
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, I thought so! My husband taught 7th and 8th grade science at the same school I'm at 8 years ago!
TS - Well I know that the parents have. But no I haven't.
Lynn/ms/pa - our P-K , K and 1st are on 1st floor--easy access
Barb/2/NE - TS, is it making you nervous that she's so close to your room? Is that interfering with your teaching?
Lynn/ms/pa - principal doesn't visit on 3rd floor too much
TS - No not really-- I have noticed that this years class is missing lots of skills.
Lynn/ms/pa - TS is she hanging out in your room
TS - OvLynn, I give you lots of credit!! I taught junior high for a year!!!
Barb/2/NE - TS, hmmm, Do I understand you to say, that the principal is visiting with the 2nd grade teacher all day, so that she isn't teaching?
TS - No she does not come in unless I need her too!
Lynn/ms/pa - taught for 18 years 7th grade homeroom
Lynn/ms/pa - you request principal to come in TS
TS - Yes!!!! we take ITBS tests(Iowas) and my class did poorly compared to my previous classes
TS - Sometimes when I want to show her that my class needs something
Lynn/ms/pa - She's coming in to instruct based on ITBS
Lynn/ms/pa - Could be the class
TS - I thought of that too, but I gave them a mini stadarized test at Christmas andd they did better.
Lynn/ms/pa - Parents notice you're not doing the neat things you usually take time to do?
Barb/2/NE - TS, I think I would just keep my mouth and door shut and just do my job. No matter how frustrating it is! Sad to see this happen, but I think it would be best, career wise, for you to just stay out of it.
Barb/2/NE - TS, it will come to a head soon enough, and I know I wouldn't want to be the one who was involved in it. I think I'm chicken!
TS - Thanks! I needed to hear that from someone else other thatn my hubby!! Sometimes it just really saddens me to see it happen. I have only been teaching for six years!!
Lynn/ms/pa - We have a 7th grade this year that I've not seen the likes of
TS - Really- what do they do Lynn
Lynn/ms/pa - Barb have you obtained the Celebrate Life script
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, I'm sad to say.....No! I feel like a nag with my co-worker!
Lynn/ms/pa - They're immature, very average in intelligence, no leadership, extremely social, not very motivated
TS - Is anyone going to NCEA conference in April in Milwaukee
Lynn/ms/pa - It sounds so wonderful
Lynn/ms/pa - Get this
Barb/2/NE - TS, about 6 teachers from our school are! Our junior High Math teacher won a Catholic School teacher award!
TS - A really hot topic is the voucher issue!
Lynn/ms/pa - NCEA--banished in Pittsburgh--Nun who supports women priest speaking
Lynn/ms/pa - teachers were told not to attend, they deny this, but the letter in the faculty room said the diocese would not support
Barb/2/NE - Our wonderful home and school is paying for their way!
TS - How cool Barb! The entire staff is going from our school. We are only two hours away.
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, wow, if our Archbishop get aload of this, we might be banned too!
TS - Really Lynn-- why?
Lynn/ms/pa - supposedly because of the nun's stance
Barb/2/NE - Oh! I just remembered! I got the address of the company that publishes the Ordo that has petitions for the day!
Lynn/ms/pa - The nun is a very literate person
TS - Awesome!
Lynn/ms/pa - Petitions are a task
TS - Yes and it is so hard to come up with original ones!
Barb/2/NE - I'll post the information on the chatboard. Our principal bought it for us this year, and we are always saying, how did we live with out this!
Lynn/ms/pa - i'VE seen the one that the priest's use for the season
Lynn/ms/pa - Catholic Schools Week?
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, it might be that one, maybe we got an illegal copy!![]()
Lynn/ms/pa - At this time of the year my science kids are in a competition
Barb/2/NE - CSW, I'm really excited about the school supplies we are collecting for our sister school
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, science fair?
Lynn/ms/pa - February 3rd--CSW is very stressful for me, I'm always under pressure with the competition
Lynn/ms/pa - Student do scientific method projects but give oral presentations with overheads.
Barb/2/NE - We have 570 students K to 8 and our sister school has 170 students PreK to 8
TS - Ours is also during CSW.
TS - Our Science teacher is going crazy!
Lynn/ms/pa - WOW==what pressure for the teachers who teach science
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, neat! Do they also use computers for their presentations?
Lynn/ms/pa - Not yet
Lynn/ms/pa - Powerpoint slide overheads are ok but not powerpoint presentations
Barb/2/NE - This past year, has been a huge technological push for our school, imacs on every teacher's desk, hooked to the internet, TV's and VCR's on every wall with computer 'mirroring' hooked up
Lynn/ms/pa - Same with us.
TS - Barb that is so cool!
Lynn/ms/pa - We are trying for renewl of Middle States Accreditation
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, I love all this new stuff! They call me the "internet woman!"
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, that's a lot of work, isn't it?
TS - I have one imac with internet hooked up in my room!
Lynn/ms/pa - We are improving TECHNOLOGY
Lynn/ms/pa - We have no Internet yet
Barb/2/NE - TS, that's good! How did you find Teachers.net?
Lynn/ms/pa - We have a homework center located in our school for the community
Lynn/ms/pa - They have Internet
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, Creighton University provides us with a special hook up and a local all girls school sends their experts to help us set up
Lynn/ms/pa - Barb you just have it too nice
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, I am so lucky where I am at! It's an unbelievably supportive school, our parents are wonderful!
TS - Barb, I was looking for a lesson plan and put in a search and it brought me to the site!
Lynn/ms/pa - Found TeachersNet by accident too
Lynn/ms/pa - Thought I died and went to heaven
Lynn/ms/pa - Like interacting with other teachers
Barb/2/NE - Everytime I bring an idea to school, they always laugh......you found it on the internet?!
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, very true! Do you belong to any of the mailrings?
Lynn/ms/pa - I often talk about the threads
Lynn/ms/pa - middle school, computer, cooperative learning,. highschool, teachtalk
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, some threads are unbelievable, and make me glad I teach at a Private school!
Lynn/ms/pa - yes, I couldn't teach in a public school
Lynn/ms/pa - I'm too structured
Barb/2/NE - I'm on 2nd grade, 4 blocks and Brain compatiable learning
Lynn/ms/pa - I expect to be able to teach and not constantly do discipline
Lynn/ms/pa - Loved 4-Blocks over the summer, Was very exciting for me
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, my brother, in California, who is a public relations consultant, joined the computer mailring! He loves it!
Lynn/ms/pa - The energy on that ring is AWES
Lynn/ms/pa - What talented people as teachers
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, Amen to that! My husband tried public school's for one year, and hated it!
Lynn/ms/pa - Three Catholic Schools merged where I'm at 10 years ago
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, that happened in our city too. It was a difficult transition
Lynn/ms/pa - This 7th grade reminds me of a public school class
Lynn/ms/pa - They give me a rash
Barb/2/NE - LOL!
Lynn/ms/pa - Sorry did I say that
Lynn/ms/pa - Mergers are very difficult
Barb/2/NE - What is also hard, is the inequalities of pay for our teachers around our city
Lynn/ms/pa - Need to say they are greatly improving finally
Lynn/ms/pa - I notice that on the boards $$$
Barb/2/NE - Do your archdiocese help with salaries? or is it all parish run?
Lynn/ms/pa - Here I make $32,000
Lynn/ms/pa - Diocese pays alot
Lynn/ms/pa - My school is in the city
Lynn/ms/pa - Catholic highschools cost $5,000 a year
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, that's sounds good to me! I bet our cost of living is very different
Lynn/ms/pa - Pgh City schools aren't the best
Lynn/ms/pa - My school is in a union
Lynn/ms/pa - My pay was 10 years ago was $13,000
Barb/2/NE - Our Catholic HS charge the same. I have 3 sons and my husband teaches at the all girl's school, no reduction for us!
Lynn/ms/pa - not for me either
Barb/2/NE - Hi Amy, welcome to the Private school teacher's chat
Lynn/ms/pa - my two children went to Catholic hs
Lynn/ms/pa - costs me $32,000 for the two of them
Lynn/ms/pa - got me ready for college tuition
Barb/2/NE - There is talk about a reduced rate because of the teacher shortage, they don't want the good teachers to go to the public schools for more money, hope it happens in 2 years! I have a 6th grader!
Lynn/ms/pa - i did get elementary tuition free
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, me too!
Lynn/ms/pa - but my kids were in school with me
Lynn/ms/pa - three years of teaching them in a row
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, so did you hear about the science textbooks filled with errors?
Lynn/ms/pa - yes, but I use my textbook only for busy work
Lynn/ms/pa - I use a lot of hands on
Lynn/ms/pa - I've in-serviced myself alot
Lynn/ms/pa - I have 40 credits in science past my masters
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, that's great!
Lynn/ms/pa - Started in teaching late in life --34
Lynn/ms/pa - so they got maturity and fresh start
Lynn/ms/pa - teachers my age have taught for 30 years already
Barb/2/NE - Our time is almost up, got any good lent ideas?
Lynn/ms/pa - Barb you seem to have a lot of vitality
Lynn/ms/pa - You know someone posted last year
Lynn/ms/pa - about using stones around an artitifical pond
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, LOL, well, maybe it's because I'm back into teaching after being a stay at home mom for 10 years!
Lynn/ms/pa - when a child do something to "change their heart" the stone was replaced with a flower
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, I remember that one! We should ask for them to repost the idea
Lynn/ms/pa - yep being a stay at home mother would do it
Lynn/ms/pa - I used to say teaching was the most expensive hobby I had
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, I taught for 3 years before the kiddo's came, then subbed and volunteered when they entered school, then I was rehooked!
Lynn/ms/pa - I'd like to do the stone one--wonderful visual
Lynn/ms/pa - staying home is tough if you're not born to it
Lynn/ms/pa - i subbed because when i signed up my son they saw i had taught
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, we did the dogwood flower thing, have you heard of that?
Barb/2/NE - Lynn, LOL, you were hooked in too!
Lynn/ms/pa - I was called to it
Lynn/ms/pa - had a very unusual introduction to teaching will have to tell you sometime
Lynn/ms/pa - So is it time to go?
Barb/2/NE - Oops, Lynn, looks like the next meeting is getting started
