judy3ca - I'm sorry you were disappointed with the Scholastic sale.
Erin - I was glad when you wrote you were confused over those few posts..sometimes I feel so dumb
Erin - It was definitely the leftovers of the leftovers
Erin - Good evening Grace.
Grace/IL - Hi Judy and Ering
judy3ca - Thanks, Erin--I'm always the first to admit when I don't get something--no skin off my nose.
Grace/IL - Oops, that was Erin
Erin - I'm glad you're here on time tonite so I won't get harassed about teasing you LOL
judy3ca - Hi Kim!
Kim/1/Ca - ((((smooches to all))))
Erin - Hi Kim!
judy3ca - Grace, do you think we got Graves sorted out, LOL?
Kim/1/Ca - Don't start with me Erin.....
Grace/IL - Hi Kim. I just finished reading the article on teachers as readers. It surely provides food for thought.
Erin - No, Kim, I posted that right as you signed on...I was not starting
Kim/1/Ca - The big one, Grace? The last one I sent....?
Erin - Yeah, Kim, that was a good one. I emailed you that I would definitely share that article
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah...Brad found that! Awesome, huh?
Grace/IL - Judy, I think so. I'm still going to promote Priscilla Vail, though. She provides lots of language games to get the oral language going before writing.
Erin - Yeah for Brad!!
Erin - I have one question...does Brad ever sleep?
Kim/1/Ca - when I got it, it was formatted ALL WRONG so I couldn't print it or save it...it took me forever to go through and fix it up. There must be a better way! LOL
judy3ca - Good, Grace, one of the many things I love about this group is the openness--certainly we want a balance.
judy3ca - ROFL Erin, I've wondered about that, too.
Alta Rose - I didn't think I'd be able to make it tonight. Had the comuputer in for servicing over the last few days. Did I miss anything? Lol.
Grace/IL - Yes, Kim. I was watching a video and working on my stitchery and discovered I'd made a major mistake so got really disgusted and came in to check my email.
Kim/1/Ca - I think he keeps strange hours, Erin, like a teenager. Up really late and then sleeps in.
Kim/1/Ca - Dont' you just HATE major stitchery mistakes? Gawl, they are soooooooo annoying.
Erin - Sounds like my husband. We are like ships passing in the night at times because of our different hours
Erin - All my stitchery is major mistakes...LOL
Grace/IL - Actually, Judy, when I started my first graders writing, I was referencing both Graves and Vail -- quite different viewpoints.
Kim/1/Ca - Pontificate in a nutshell about Vail, Grace.
Grace/IL - Yes, I have almost a whole butterfly stitched in and it's 7 points off where it needs to be.
judy3ca - Good for you, Grace. I think that's the most important part of any good teaching--the excellent teacher melding what she needs.
Kim/1/Ca - You are like the medieval artist, Grace. During that period nothing could be perfect because ONLY God is perfect.
Sharon - oh wow! I AM psychic... i just knew you all would be here... lol!
Kim/1/Ca - ((((....and Cavey!!)))
judy3ca - (((cavey))) I was so hoping you'd make it tonight--what do you think of MOT?
Kim/1/Ca - Dang, you ARE good.........(<shaking head in wonderment)
Sharon - do tell cavey... i've been wondering, too!
cavey - Oh Judy, I think I know how a Moonie or a Scientologist feels. I'm converted.
Grace/IL - Vail -- Part 1. The Prescription -- receptive language, listening games and activities, reading games, vocabulary games.
Sharon - *strut* I predict cavey is loving mot!
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, spill yer guts, cavey. THEN Grace can pontificate in a nutshell about Patricia Vail.
Alta Rose - How much have you read so far, Cavey?
judy3ca - (((((cavey))))) I have been thinking of you tons--I'm thrilled you have the RIGHT response, LOL.
Sharon - see? right again! *snapping fingers in a Z pattern*
Erin - judy, would she dare say anything else in this group? LOL
Kim/1/Ca - (Sheesh. Sharon is struttin' like a rooster. Oh brother.......next thing you know she'll have a t.v. show.)
cavey - I'm carrying it around with me, reading while I walk. My hubby said, what ARE you reading?
Alta Rose - Dare she say anything else, Judy? LOL.
Grace/IL - Vail -- Part 2: Practice -- expressive language, problems particular to writing, build a bannister: frameworks for speaking, prose and poetry, word games and word patterns, stimulate and stand back (models and experiments for factual, persuasive, and aisthetic writing.
judy3ca - Sharon, I'm actually trying that--is it something I should recognize?
Erin - Alta, great minds...
judy3ca - ROFL, you guys don't think we could stand a dissenting opinion?
Erin - Just an attitude thing, judy
Sharon - it's gotta be done with wrist motion and attitude judy
cavey - I'm on Chapter 5. I was reading while waiting for my hookup just now. If I zone out, you'll know why.
Erin - Dissenters and MOT....I don't think so
Alta Rose - Sharon, I really appreciate what you 've been posting on mosaicteachers about phonemic awareness...I'm thinking I really need that book now! (Pressley)
Grace/IL - Vail -- Part 3: Yesar in, year out: a shool-year calendar of writing activities conclusion: the prognosis
Kim/1/Ca - Grade level, Grace?
Sharon - i didn't get into pa as much as i wanted to... i didn't think others were interested, alta
judy3ca - Sharon, did you get my post about the Tavares book--did that make sense to you?
cavey - I'm remembering all the things you guys have been talking about for the last six months and going OH YEAH, I get it now!
Kim/1/Ca - DISSENTERS? We have NO DISSENTERS. (<<wickedly laughing and trying to avoid a strutting Sharon)
Sharon - i didn't get it and was gonna whine to you about it judy
judy3ca - (Whispering, I'm one of the disappointing ones who semi-abandoned Pressley. Sorry.)
Kim/1/Ca - Wait, before you WHINE. Let's get some cheese.
Alta Rose - Just those 4 or 5 steps you posted were interesting...I thought, this is crucial stuff, and how many of us do (don't) teach this?
cavey - I guess I'll just gush to myself for a while, you guys go ahead without me, I'm kinda in a fog
Sharon - it's ok, judy... i still love you!
Kim/1/Ca - Too ESOTERIC for you Judy?
Sharon - lol kim... judy saved me from whining... she sent me something!
cavey - Wait, did somebody mention wine?????
Erin - Judy, after Graves and REading Essentials, Pressley was a hard read
Erin - cavey...wHine...go back to MOT
judy3ca - Sharon, I sent it 15 minutes ago....
Kim/1/Ca - You like that article I sent MOST recently, Sharon? From the gifted child mag? I think Brad sent it. Or did YOU?
Sharon - kim... mess with me and i'll start talking about the other great song picture books i got today
judy3ca - Erin, not just hard, but not interesting for me.
Sharon - i didn't get one, kim? what's up with my email? geeze!
Kim/1/Ca - OTHER great song books? YOU are so terribly MEAN. I can't stand it.
Grace/IL - Grade level -- for teachers or tutors in classrooms and resource rooms, also for those who run enrichment programs for giften adn talented, for students of any age, for parents whose children are receiving inadequate or confusing instruction, for families who want a pool of word games for automobile trips or dinner table enjoyment.
cavey - Kim, you didn't send ME the gifted child article?
Erin - I agree Judy...I'm starting "How's It Going" and the teaching punctuation one...it's really good
Sharon - lol... i'm just kidding
Kim/1/Ca - I like it, Grace.
Kim/1/Ca - (head in hands here)
Alta Rose - Cavey, remind me--What grade are you?
Sharon - kidding about the song books but not about the email
judy3ca - Erin, which one is good? I have both, but I only know where to find "How's it going?"
Kim/1/Ca - Cavey..I will! I will! I am trying to figure out my address book.
Erin - THe Teaching Punctuation one...I've had it for a while but finally got it out...the inquiry approach is really interesting.
cavey - Alta, 3-5 daily, 2nd on 2 days for pullout Lang. Arts only
judy3ca - Speaking of "How's It Going?".....every time I pass the kitchen table, I ask "How's it going, girls?" to my 2 new nameless pets.
Erin - I'm on the 2nd chapter in How's It Going...that's good too
Sharon - what pets, judy?
Erin - And what are those pets, Judy?
Kim/1/Ca - New Pets?
Kim/1/Ca - snakes?
cavey - Judy - what types of rodents did you get suckered into?
Kim/1/Ca - tarantulas?
Erin - Judy is having conferences with her pets...help her
Kim/1/Ca - Madagascar Hissing cockroaches?
Grace/IL - They're on the table?
Erin - hamsters
judy3ca - Rats!
Sharon - you did NOT!
cavey - YOu go JUdy!
Kim/1/Ca - (YOu only have to worry when the pets answer back)
judy3ca - Grace, LOL, they're in a cage and there is paper under the cage.
Erin - Wow, Judy, I'm really glad for you...(rolling eyes)
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, Oh Rats! Now, WHAT kind of pets, Judy?
Grace/IL - Rats on the table?
Alta Rose - Were you the one who got a gift certificate for Christmas, Judy?
Kim/1/Ca - Rats on the floor.
Erin - Grace is having problems with this, I can tell
judy3ca - Erin, LOL, they are darling babies. My friend says I have to love them before their tales grow.
Kim/1/Ca - Rats on the counter top.
cavey - I'll b
Kim/1/Ca - Rats out the door.
Erin - Rats on mats
judy3ca - Alta, that's me--and my rats, LOL.
Grace/IL - I think you CA girls are really into the exotic stuff.
cavey - I'll bet they told you it was two girls right Judy?
Erin - What tales do they tell? Tall tales?
Kim/1/Ca - Rats with cats. Rats with hats.
SistaS0UL - Are all the people in here Music Teachers ???
Erin - Rats and gnats
Kim/1/Ca - Grace, for heaven's sake. They are in JUDY's house, not YOURS. You are safe.
judy3ca - cavey, right, and my student already "checked their butts."
Grace/IL - I live with a huge dog and a furry cat. That's more than enough for me but they came with the marriage.
teacher - hello SistaSoul
Kim/1/Ca - My son has a pet rat in the dorm. His name is Chester. Chester is a real chick magnet.
Sharon - if you count the hokeypokey as a top ten hit... yes!
cavey - Grace, I have a cat. I cat. No in my hat.
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, I am the reason God invented CDs. A travesty.........a teacher who cannot sing. Very sad.
Erin - I have a cat, a dog and a fish...more than enough
judy3ca - Kim, that's great. Is he allowed to have a pet in the dorm?
cavey - That's 1 cat and NOT in a hat!
Grace/IL - No cat in my hat either.
Kim/1/Ca - NO, Judy. Chester is an illegal immigrant.
Sharon - cannot sing and loves picture song books... me too, kim!
judy3ca - Kim, you mean an illegal immigRAT?
cavey - Oh Judy, butts can change!
Alta Rose - I am not kidding when I tell you this--There are no rats allowed in my province.
Kim/1/Ca - ROFLMAO.........(<<<snort)
Erin - LOL, judy
Grace/IL - ROFL
Alta Rose - Alberta is rat free and proud of it!
judy3ca - cavey, really? Oh no!
Erin - Yeah, cavey, I know about that butt thing. Mine's changed...gotten much bigger
Sharon - so where did all the men go, alta?
Sharon -
Kim/1/Ca - Oh great.......rats expelled from Alberta, Canada. Brad expelled from Australia. And pet rats not allowed in Chico. What is the world coming to?
judy3ca - Erin, ROFLMAO (and it's still too big).
Alta Rose - Sharon--ROTFLMAO!
Kim/1/Ca - (good one, Sharon....Hee hee hee. Good thing Brad isnt' here yet.)
judy3ca - Sharon, more ROFL!!!!!!
cavey - I had two "girl" gerbils. On day a very interested and giggly group of 5th grade boys were hovering around the cage snickering. Sex ed, gerbil style!
Kim/1/Ca - Are you serious, Alta?
Grace/IL - Hi Diane
Sharon - homosexual gerbils?
judy3ca - Oh, dear, cavey--oh well.
Alta Rose - Very serious.
diane - man...what did i walk in on? gerbil sex??
judy3ca - And Amazon came today.
Erin - When judy starts advertising for free rats, we'll know they were a boy and girl
Kim/1/Ca - Oh, that's great, Cavey. Now the fundamentalists will be after you.
cavey - little d!!!
Erin - What books could you have possibly ordered?
Sharon - oh lawd, erin!
judy3ca - Erin, LOL, just help me remember this promise: no trips to vets for rats.
Kim/1/Ca - I had to take the Kinder hampster in...he had a tumor.
Grace/IL - Was it a live tumor?
Sharon - i just found out that the avian vet for our @#$%atiel costs a fortune!
Kim/1/Ca - My bookcloseouts order came!
judy3ca - I got the Allington book about Struggling Readers and a very cool book Graves, Donald Graves, recommended about famous writer's writing when they were young. It has a poem Pat Conroy wrote at the death of a basketball teammate, a darling story Stephen King wrote when he was 9.....
cavey - Okay Kim. do tell!
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Grace. Very sad.
judy3ca - Kim--anything good in your order?
Erin - What's the name of that book, Judy?
Kim/1/Ca - JUDY! Sounds really good!
Erin - THe writer's one
Erin - Michelle, who made me dig out my Calkin's book...but I love that one
judy3ca - (((nan)))
Grace/IL - Kim, I think you missed my point. When I was pregnant with my first one, the doctor told me I had a live tumor.
Erin - Wow the gangs all here
cavey - Hey Nan!
Michelle - I just finished my Calkins book
Kim/1/Ca - ((((nan, michelle)))
judy3ca - Where's Brad?
diane - ok...i'm pinching pennies these days...i have to ask...is reading essentials really great? i want to know if i'm going to NEED it
Grace/IL - Hi Nan
Sharon - probably on EBSCO, judy!
naneb - everyone's here except Brad
Kim/1/Ca - Sorry, Grace. (that whooshing sound was your "funny" going over my head.)
judy3ca - Sharon, LOL. Didn't you have a way of knowing when he was there, snort!
naneb - (((((((((((((((AltaRose, Erin, Grace, Judy, Kim, Michelle, Sharon, cavey, diane))))))))))))))))))))))
judy3ca - Michelle, which Calkins did you finish and what did you think?
Kim/1/Ca - Judy, in the Allington book there are some excellent stats on volume of reading. I use them a LOT
Sharon - i shoulda made him think I did sneak a webcam attachment in on him!
Michelle - the art of teaching reading
Sharon - hiya nan!
cavey - Nan, Nan, I'm becoming MOTled!
Michelle - i think i was insane to read it so fast.
Erin - Judy, I have the Allington book if you want to discuss anything
Kim/1/Ca - Cavey is becoming Motified.
Erin - Michelle, I have read and reread that book many times
judy3ca - Kim, good, that's my next hard read (watch it sit forever). I really do sometimes have books for a year before I read them.
Michelle - i had a headache the last two days from all the reading and thinking i did
Kim/1/Ca - OOOH, good one, Michelle.
Erin - No judy, it's not a hard read (Allington). Much more user friendly than Pressley
Kim/1/Ca - Have you read Classrooms that Work and Schools that Work, Judy? Some of the stuff he repeats. A good read.
judy3ca - Erin, I'm going to work up to reading it. Right now I want to finish Routman and read the 2 you mentioned, Anderson and the punctuation book (if I can find it).
Sharon - which allington is that? What Really Matters for Struggling Readers?
Erin - Michelle, what things are you going to try in your classroom?
Kim/1/Ca - Yes Sharon...you know it?
cavey - brb need to replenish my wHine
judy3ca - Kim, Classrooms That Work is one of my alltime favorites! That was THE book I read before I came back to work.
diane - okay....i have to ask again...do you guys wholeheartedly recommend the new routman? i'm pinching pennies...
Sharon - yes... read it last year... very good read!
Michelle - oh, i'm glad judy..because I read the punctuation one and Anderson is my next one.
Erin - Judy, what do you think. Are we telling diane to get Routman?
Alta Rose - I'm back--Anyway, back to the rats--Not allowed in Alberta because they destroy crops and spread diseases. There are rat patrols along Sask and Montana boarders.
Kim/1/Ca - sorry diane.......it IS good. But most of it is stuff you have heard and read before. Worth it but you could wait.
judy3ca - diane, I really don't know what to tell you.
Erin - I agree Kim
Michelle - erin...I'm still thinking on it. There's so much. Some of it I'm going to wait until next year, because I hate to overhaul a system i have in place already
judy3ca - Michelle, great!
Kim/1/Ca - WEll, Judy he wrote the chapter about things worth fighting for and the whole book kind of expands on that.
Alta Rose - borders I mean.
Michelle - but I'm going to try some of her suggestions she had for reading conferences.
Kim/1/Ca - bring me some, cavey
diane - thanks. knowing me i'll end up getting anyway...
Kim/1/Ca - Canada has funding for RAT patrols?
Michelle - alta...california has Fruit patrols at its interstate borders.
diane - i am, finally, halfway through the graves
Alta Rose - Priorities, Kim--Priorities!
Kim/1/Ca - WE DO?
judy3ca - diane, do you like it?
Michelle - you didn't know, kim?
Sharon - gosh... poor males... banned from canada AND california
Michelle - never driven out of state?
Erin - I'm going to focus on a punctuation study when I get back
Alta Rose - Just Alberta, Kim.
Grace/IL - When we went to Saskatchewan, we had to disinfect our shoes for mad cow disease.
Erin - The Punctuation book and some of Graves intrigued me and I want to try it
Erin - Kim, are you new in the state?
diane - judy, i'm really loving it. i'm rethinking my author's chair/student sharing
Sharon - grace... by walking over that little carpet thingy? we did that coming back from england
Alta Rose - That was a year or two, right Grace? Mad cow was coming from England.
cavey - White Zin, right Kim? Here ya go?
diane - i feel like it has lacked focus and quality. i really like his suggestions for getting students to attend to the text more carefully
Grace/IL - Yes, that carpet thingy
judy3ca - diane and Erin, I'm planning to ask kids on Monday what is important about their piece and what it needs.
Michelle - I also think I may try teaching the kids how to have a conversation about our reading, like Calkins demonstrates.
Grace/IL - Right, from England, but they checked EVERYONE coming in from out of the country.
Kim/1/Ca - Very funny, Erin.
Kim/1/Ca - Thanks, Cavey.
Erin - I met with my teaching partner today and shared some of these ideas...he thinks I'm nuts sometimes, but willingly tries things
cavey - brb again , bed tuck
Erin - By looking at the STANDARDS, we realized half of our science textbook is extra...this has saved us a lot of stress.
Grace/IL - Kim's a multi-generation Californian -- been there from the gold rush days.
Michelle - hmm...I'm not hearing any sounds on the computer tonight. weird. my computer's been acting funny.
Erin - I know, what a novel idea, reading the standards
judy3ca - I'm also going to show kids what I read over vacation (well, some of it). I have a bunch of books for friends with my stickies on the front (Penny, I hope you like this one as much as I did--much better than her last). I think they'll 'get it.'
diane - yep, judy, i am planning on getting my students to identify what their piece is about in one line...i have some that will give me a synopsis of plot rather than main idea. i'm hoping this will give their pieces more focus
Michelle - but she's under house arrest? not allowed to leave the state?
Mrs. J - Big crowd tonight!
Mrs. J - Hi, Grace, you remembered!
Erin - Same here Judy. I also bought a journal for my little girl who lost her dad. Wanted her to have something special to write in
Alta Rose - Hi Mrs. J.
Michelle - no...she's Kim in M....kiminim
Mrs. J - Sorry I'm late--technical difficulties trying to print one of Kim's articles. I finally gave up (for now)
Kim/1/Ca - Hiya Michikim! (Mrs. J. Other Kim.)
Mrs. J - They gave me that name last night at the impromptu chat, Michelle. Cute, eh?
cavey - I'm back! Hi Michikim!
diane - hi kim
Michelle - really? I made it up myself a few weeks ago, but kept forgetting to mention it. rats.
judy3ca - Erin, that's great!
Michelle - what impromptu chat? bummer. missed something good
Erin - Yeah, what's up with the impromptu chat!?!
Sharon - judy... can you resend that to me later... (tavares)
cavey - You're missing the game football.
judy3ca - (((Marcia)))
Mrs. J - There was a post on the t-net board so I wandered over to room 2 and low and behold, there were some friends there chatting!
Sharon - hi marcia!
diane - hi marcia
footballfan - no i am watchin it
Grace/IL - Kim got all bothered last night and wanted a chatroom so we appropriated a couple of them.
cavey - Hi Marcia!
Marcia/1st/GA - Hi all! have been reading Routman's book and watching The Bachelor!
Kim/1/Ca - yeah, we stole the meeting room.
Michelle - aw, man...and I thought I had been online a lot these last several days. must've been reading.
Kim/1/Ca - What a combination, Marcia!
Erin - Michelle, I agree. Gotta think what I was doing
Mrs. J - I thought the bachelor was over?
Alta Rose - We got a brand new worm virus...Had the computer in to get fixed up, so didn't get on the board the last couple of days.
Marcia/1st/GA - Yeah, i can multitask! First time to see The Bachelor--it looks like I could be hooked, i'm sorry to say.
Kim/1/Ca - It just appeared to me the board was real busy last night. We were all milling around, so I suggested a chat.
Michelle - about what time was it? maybe i was at school.
Marcia/1st/GA - It is, but don't tellme who won!! Please, they are doing another show tomorrow to reveal the identity
cavey - Step away from the TV Marcia
Marcia/1st/GA - cavey, i stepped away....
Mrs. J - So they are replaying it?
Alta Rose - Hey, did any one you see the movie "The Emperor's Club?" It's a good one for teachers to see.
cavey - Michelle, 7:30 your time
Grace/IL - Yep, Kim's article says teachers can't find time to read but can always find time for TV.
Marcia/1st/GA - They are replaying the ending of it, I think. It's my first time, I am not familiar with it.
Erin - Quick, send the article to Marcia
Marcia/1st/GA - The Emporer's Club is great. If you go, take paper to write down some of the quotes. They are thought provoking.
Michelle - I was reading then, if I wasn't here.
Marcia/1st/GA - Yes, i need the article, apparently
cavey - Not quick, takes forever the download.
Mrs. J - I watched the last two shows. Bachelorette starts next week--Joe Millionaire too
Alta Rose - It comes down to establishing priorities, doesn't it, Grace?
Erin - Grace, those same teachers can obviously find time to be on the computer, too LOL
DMB - Nope, doesn't hurt. Am getting use to it.
Michelle - what teachers are that?? no teachers here!
Kim/1/Ca - It sure does, Alta Rose.
Alta Rose - It's out of the theatre here, now, so must be on video very soon.
Marcia/1st/GA - Erin, I was going to say I went from one screen to another
Grace/IL - My priority seems to be this *&^% machine.
Erin - It said in the article that some teachers read only 2 books a YEAR...definitely not ESIA
Michelle - I'm really trying to cut out on TV. the news is too depressing these days.
Marcia/1st/GA - Erin, does children's literature count?
Erin - What are we up to? 2 books a day?
judy3ca - Kim, I was walking through the room where the TV was on and saw a commercial for The Hours.
cavey - Grace !!! A @#*&* from you?
Sharon - B&N had all their Christmas books 1/2 off... someone had already cleared out the Polacco and Rylant, but i got one I love... Christmas Day in the Morning... it's a beautiful picture book of Pearl Buck's piece
footballfan - my teacher friends are always trading books
Mrs. J - 2 professional books or 2 books period?
Grace/IL - News is on right now -- all murders and mayhem.
Sharon - anyone familiar with it?
Kim/1/Ca - Okay, Marcia. I'll send it. YOu too, Alta and Cavey. And Michelle.
Erin - Yes, Marcia. It advocated reading children's books (esp if you teach older students) so that you could recommend good books to them
Marcia/1st/GA - Erin, well, I read one while I was at they eye doctor today. i could probably finish Routman if I stay up (and get off the computer now..)
footballfan - football on ABC, Grace!
diane - sadly, erin, i believe that statistic...i'm the only teacher at my school that reads (i think)...and we're a progressive bunch there
Kim/1/Ca - You keep bringing THAT up, Sharon. (grrrr)
Grace/IL - Purposely a *&^% -- right down from 8 to 5.
Marcia/1st/GA - Oh, Sharon, I think that's in my Amazon shopping cart.
Alta Rose - Thanks, Kim!
Michelle - thanks kim. I don't want to miss any good, juicy notes!
Mrs. J - Me too, Diane
judy3ca - Sharon, Jan's granddaughter loves that book!
Marcia/1st/GA - Is it the one where the boy does all the milking?
cavey - Is Ohio still up Football?
Erin - diane, I agree. Some teachers at my school read...but no professional books
footballfan - yes ohio up
Sharon - it's half-off at B&N, marcia... in store
judy3ca - I finished a really good book today, The Little Friend by Donna Tartt.
Kim/1/Ca - I have never understood football. One of life's mysteries.
Marcia/1st/GA - Ohio State is still winning is what DH says
Marcia/1st/GA - Well, Sharon, I guess I will have to take a sneaky trip back over there tomorrow.
Erin - Yeah, and you're sending it to me Judy, because it's a hardcover and I won't buy it
Sharon - judy... it's a christmas book i know... but i'm still gonna add it to my questioning strategy focus
Michelle - I read lots of childrens books. I read 2 yesterday...the Roberto Clemente one and Blackberries in the Dark.
cavey - Oh Kim, I love football!
Sharon - yes, marcia
Erin - Kim, my brother taught me all about it and i sure impressed the guys in high school
Grace/IL - I'm not a football fan either.
diane - we do have a book prof book discussion group at my school, but i worry about the fact that most aren't reading for pleasure. i really believe the kids know this and pick up attitude from it
judy3ca - Erin, LOL, it's already spoken for (several times over).
Kim/1/Ca - There should be a link to my eMail on the board. A post to Michelle. click on it so I can put you in my address book. Okay?
naneb - I loved Blackberries in the Dark
cavey - I'll splain it to you sometime
Mrs. J - I finished that yesterday, Judy. I went to the library and picked it up after you recommended it--couldn't afford Routman, Pressley AND Tartt
Sharon - marcia... look for the beautifully illustrated version of Here Comes Santa Claus too... it's a good one!
Michelle - watching football leaves lots of time for reading...so many non-action moments.
Kim/1/Ca - I went all through my college years with a guy who missed every Monday night class if there was a football game on.
Sharon - tells another whole story in the illustrations
Erin - Like I said on the board. I share with my kids how I read while I blow dry my hair in the morning
judy3ca - Kim (other Kim) did you like it? I loved it!
footballfan - non prof reading is good too
cavey - Not as many as baseball Michelle
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon,I love books like that. I will check it out. Too bad B & N just closed...
Erin - good point cavey
Kim/1/Ca - agreed, footballfan. we have been doing a lOT of that these past two weeks.
Mrs. J - I did like it--better than Brad's Lullaby. I read that too. I really liked how Tartt wrote. I felt as if I knew the characters intimately
footballfan - read during a football game? gasp!
cavey - Okay, somebody summarize tonights book suggestions. There are too many of us, and I'm lost!
Erin - I usually only watch t.v. when I am too tired to read...like right before i fall aslee
Kim/1/Ca - sorry, ff...didn't mean to offend.
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon, you would like one by Thomas Locker called Water Dance. I thought about your water cycle you teach
Mrs. J - I'm just starting The Pilot's Wife
Grace/IL - I try to watch football but can never figure out who's holding the ball -- LOL
Michelle - oh, Sharon...like Lost. I love Lost
Sharon - i have it, marcia!
Marcia/1st/GA - Mrs. J, I love Anita Shreve. I think I own all of her books now
footballfan - smile kim
judy3ca - Mrs. J--that was my reaction, too. And I'd love to know what became of harriet as she got older. The characters were very real for me.
naneb - I am reading Evening Class by Maeve Binchy
Erin - Marcia, that is a beautiful book. I love all of Thomas Locker
Erin - I am reading "The Map that Changed the World" by Winchester
Marcia/1st/GA - Mrs. J., I got Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve for $7.00 at B & N the other day. If you like Pilot's Wife, read it. It might have even been better.
Kim/1/Ca - Some things are just almost RELIGIOUS now, aren't they, FF?
Mrs. J - Oh, me too, Judy. I felt a little unsettled with the ending
cavey - Where did Nan go?
diane - just finished "the man who owned vermont" pretty good
naneb - here!!! I am here!!
Kim/1/Ca - Loved Pilot's Wife.
Marcia/1st/GA - I ordered some more of Thomas Locker books from bookcloseouts the other day too.
Michelle - Kim, look! someone else reading Binchy!
footballfan - yes kim
Kim/1/Ca - Nan! Your turn to watch Brad. Where is he?
cavey - Nan, maybe you can gush over MOT with me?
Marcia/1st/GA - Did anyone read "the Last Time they Met also by Anita Shreve. Just finished it last night.
diane - hi sadie
judy3ca - Marcia, I like Shreve, too! My husband is loving Sea Glass right now (I always select his reading for him, LOL).
Mrs. J - I wanted to get The Hours, but they were all checked out
Erin - Hi Sadie
naneb - I don't know, I haven't heard from him except for the pictures today
Michelle - Hi Sadie!
Alta Rose - I'm just about to start "A Fine Balance." Anybody read it?
Sadie T - hi
Alta Rose - Hi Sadie!
Sharon - cavey... i'm always up to hear your thoughts and discuss with you on MOT
Marcia/1st/GA - Sea Glass was also very good, Judy. I was on a Shreve bent this summer.
cavey - Pictures?????
naneb - I just want to rave about my 8th graders!
Michelle - Between Two Words....recommended by Sadie, right?
diane - alta....i read half of it then stopped to read another title. i really loved it and am going to start it up again
judy3ca - The Hours is great! I have a big stack of fiction to choose from right now thanks to Christmas--lucky me!
Mrs. J - I'm sure he will enter any time. He has that uncanny knack of entering when we are talking about him
cavey - Butterscotch girl!!! You're making me drool. Back to the diet now!
Sharon - good day, nan?
Kim/1/Ca - RAVE, Nan....
judy3ca - Marcia, my absolute favorite is Weight of Water.
naneb - I have pictures of Brad's kids!! I will post them on the yahoo site
judy3ca - Hi Sadie!!!!!!
cavey - You go, Naneb!!!
Sadie T - "Between Worlds" by Freeman&Freeman, Michelle?
Kim/1/Ca - You like The Hours, Judy? I am having a hard time getting INTO it.
Michelle - yeah, that's the one I meant, sadie. thanks
diane - alta, you'll have to tell me what you think
naneb - we started the sentence and passage reading part of that program (Rewards) that I went to the workshop to learn and they did not make a mistake, it was incredible
Mrs. J - Nan, did you go back to school already?
Alta Rose - OK, Diane. A friend of mine said it was really good.
judy3ca - Kim, I loved it. I love reading good literature. I just need to decide what to start tonight.
cavey - Oh Sharon, thank you, I almost lost your post. This room is crowded tonight
naneb - yesterday!
Erin - Awesome, nan
Kim/1/Ca - (<<<homer drool) b r a d
Sharon - what chapter are you on, cavey?
diane - i'm hearing good things about the botany of desire...anybody read that one?
Sadie T - Michelle, I just finished "Closing the Achievement Gap" by Freeman & Freeman too. It's meant for older students (middle/high school) but not just limited to older students. Very good. (And much shorter than Between Worlds.)
cavey - I'm in the middle of 5 sharon
Sadie T - Nan, I might start some of the Rewards stuff soon. Any suggestions?
Marcia/GA/1st - Judy, I didn't read Weight of Water yet. That might have to be my next one.
cavey - Michikim, I went back yesterday
naneb - Kim, I finished Flesh and Bloob by Faye Kellerman, it was good
judy3ca - Sharon, I just got the Tavares email--so it's been traveling, LOL.
Kim/1/Ca - (((Sadie!!)) didn't see you come in.....
naneb - Sadie, what grade do you teach?
Mrs. J - That seems like a strange day to start Nan
Sharon - okie dokie, judy!
judy3ca - Marcia, I wish we could sit down together and talk about her.
Sadie T - I teach high school, Nan, but my students' reading levels are first through sixth
Michelle - Between Worlds is available at my school for loan, so since it's free, I'm considering it.
diane - wow, nan, i don't have kids until tuesday (in-service on monday)
Alta Rose - Cavey, you'll have to read Reading With Meaning right after MOT!
Marcia/GA/1st - Oh, me too. Did you read The Last time they met?
judy3ca - Sharon, of course, after all this, it will seem like a stupid message.
Kim/1/Ca - SADIE! Have you read A Magical Encounter by Alma Flor Ada?
Sadie T - Hi Kim I just got here a couple minutes ago
naneb - We do an alternate day block schedule so, it was as good as any other day
judy3ca - Marcia, I skipped that one--did you like it?
Sadie T - Michelle, Between Worlds is really excellent
Mrs. J - I have Flesh and Blood waiting in the wings after I'm done with Pilot's Wife
cavey - Yep Alta, that seems to be what I should do. I've got Creating Writers waiting though.
Sadie T - No Kim I have not but your posts have pretty much convinced me!
Marcia/GA/1st - yes, but needed to talk to someone about it. I won't reveal anything, but if you read it let me know.
diane - kim!!! that was the title i was trying to remember today...thanks!!
naneb - Sadie, the biggest thing about Rewards is that they need to have a pretty good vocabulary so they will know if what they heard or said is a word
Grace/IL - What's Pilot's Wife about?
Marcia/GA/1st - Kim, I love Alma Flor Ada's picture books.
cavey - Hey Football? What's the score?
Sadie T - Yes, Nan, that was my big concern. That's why I got the stuff last year and still have not tried it! LOL
Kim/1/Ca - aw shucks, diane.......
judy3ca - I think I'm going to start Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress tonight--but maybe The Piano Tuner. Yum, new fiction!
thtt - 17 - 14 ohio but miami driving
Grace/IL - 17-14 -- OSU
Sharon - oooo... 45 secs left. miami driving... brb
judy3ca - Grace, a man who hid 2 marriages.
naneb - Sadie, my 8th graders moaned and complained about having to do that phonics stuff but today they saw the results
thtt - oh overtime maybe
Sadie T - I remember "make it a real word", they need to know if it IS a real word.
cavey - Grace??? I thought you didn't like football?
Mrs. J - 3 seconds, field goal attempt coming
Marcia/GA/1st - Judy, the Piano Tuner and the Pianist-I can't remember which one I saw with new novels the other day.
Sadie T - I am thinking about trying it with my more advanced students, problem is, many of them already have the phonics part down fairly well. Others don't....
diane - am i the only person that felt that pilot's wife was too contrived? i just couldn't buy into it
Sharon - 3 seconds and miami going for a fieldgoal to tie!
Sharon - BLOCK THAT KICK
Mrs. J - After these commercial messages.......
cavey - Well?
Grace/IL - cavey, I passed the TV on the way to the frig for my yogurt
Mrs. J - Sharon, an OSU fan?
thtt - hee hee
Kim/1/Ca - It's about a woman whose husband is killed in a plane crash. he was the pilot. picking up the pieces.....led a double life.
naneb - we did lesson 13 today except for the long passage and we will do it Tuesday
Sharon - timeout to ice him, cavey
judy3ca - Marcia, The Piano Tuner looks excellent.
cavey - Got it Sharon!
Mrs. J - Just starting it, diane. Too soon for me to say
Sharon - no, michikim... just NOT a miami fan
Erin - Judy, what does it say that it is about, The Piano Tuner?
Mrs. J - Don't tell to much!!!!!!
Marcia/GA/1st - diane, I guess I liked it so much I didn't care. It did what i like books to do-swept me away for awhile.
Grace/IL - Don't need to read anything about double lives!!!!!
Kim/1/Ca - hmmmm.....i like the human elements. the emotions. i didn't like the drunk scene at all. out of character.
footballfan - miss!
Michelle - I borrowed In the Middle from the school Professional library...but it was all messed up! Put together wrongly. I guess no one else has checked it out. It was missing the first two chapters, instead had the 3rd and 4th chapter twice.
Kim/1/Ca - not smarmy, grace.........
cavey - Oh this is exciting! Just like play by play!
Sharon - how long an attempt is it, fff?
footballfan - not sure
Michelle - I don't like to read about people who deliberately deceive others. Can't stand it on tv either. don't know why that is.
judy3ca - Erin, it's the story of a British piano tuner sent deep into Burma in the nineteenth century to repair a rare piano.
Erin - Michelle, that's a bummer
cavey - Well, football, if you're gonna do the play by play, pay attention!
Sharon - 40 yards
Grace/IL - Michelle, I'm with you on that.
footballfan - they are icing the miami kicker
diane - michelle, which brings me to the new reality show fox is advertising....about the "fake" millionaire...won't be tuning in to that one
Sharon - another time out (third one) cavey
Michelle - me neither, diane.
footballfan - here we go
Mrs. J - Well, Miami made it--OT, Sharon, sorry
Alta Rose - I heard something about that, diane.
Sharon - durn it!
Mrs. J - Just barely though
Kim/1/Ca - Everybody stop for a second. There is a confusing situation here.
Grace/IL - Deception seems to be the way of life lately. Don't need to read any more about it. I like upbeat stuff.
footballfan - sorry sharon
Marcia/GA/1st - Judy, sounds good. Isn't there a movie out about it or is the one called the Pianist?
Mrs. J - How sick is that, diane, I agree
Erin - What now Kim
judy3ca - I don't know, Marcia, I never go to movies (well, hardly ever).
cavey - WHAT'S WRONG KIM/
Marcia/GA/1st - What is it Kim?
Sharon - don't both teams get a shot at scoring from the 20 in college overtime?
Alta Rose - You mean the movie The Piano?
footballfan - 25 yes
Kim/1/Ca - Okay.... I said that I would send the article to several people in here who didn't get it. I said to click on my eMail on the chatboard.
Erin - yes, and....
Sharon - i hope miami goes first *crossing fingers*
cavey - Which article are we talking about dear?
Marcia/GA/1st - Alta, maybe that's the name. I am not one for details , Piano Tuner, Pianist, Piano, whatever
footballfan - you want to win the toss and go last
judy3ca - However, I could also read my one fun book that's waiting, Grisham's new paperback--have you all read it?
Erin - THe Summons? Very quick read, Judy
judy3ca - Erin, did you like it?
naneb - The Summons? just finished it
naneb - I thought the end needed work
judy3ca - Well, nan?
Grace/IL - Waiting with bated breath for Kim's solution to problems.
cavey - You just have that lovely maroon aura about you Marcia!
naneb - entertaining otherwise, fun to read
Mrs. J - OSU won the toss
Erin - It was alright. I agree, the ending was a little disappointing
Sharon - there's one wish granted, fff... now cross your fingers that ohio scores a touchdown
judy3ca - Okay, that's it then for tonight, nan.
cavey - Look Erin, Grace used BATED correctly.
footballfan - wow Walter Paytons son and Kellen Winslow's son are playing in this game!
Kim/1/Ca - I downloaded a good article from RRQ online. Almost blew out an ink cartridge. Same issue.......teachers as readers.
footballfan - Kim how are you accessing RRQ online?
naneb - I got it and then it disappeared, yes the first level is for short vowels and blends, second level is long vowels and third is 2 and 3 syllable words
Kim/1/Ca - Through I.R.A. Reading.org.....
diane - lol, cavey
Grace/IL - lady raider???
footballfan - I figured Grace would guess. Sigh...
cavey - smooches darling!
diane - speaking of ira...michelle, i don't think i can attend the spring conference
Sadie T - Where is Brad tonight? Or is he really one of these other people around here tonight??
Erin - LOL cavey
Sharon - DARN!
Mrs. J - touch down miami
Sadie T - Thanks Nan
Michelle - aw..bummer.
Grace/IL - No kidding -- lady raider?
Mrs. J - He's not doing much talking if he is
cavey - Okay, so now everyone is sending private messages and no one is on the board
Kim/1/Ca - No, Michikim! that one is 39 pages, lol!
diane - my district is talking about cutting days (cutting my paycheck...yikes) so i can't afford to register...and they sure won't be paying my way in
footballfan - that's me, but I was incognito. Since this is my first time here. I was checking y'all out.
Grace/IL - I knew it had to be someone who was being really courteious.
Kim/1/Ca - Yikes, diane!
Lily - WHO
diane - lol, lraider...did we pass?
cavey - You mean Football Fan is not your God given name?
Michelle - we finally signed a contract in December. I'll have a better paycheck in January.
Kim/1/Ca - How many days will they cut?
footballfan - grin Cavey
Grace/IL - lady raider is the courteous one
diane - yeah, kim...i'm actually thinking i may have to get a weekend job...can you imagine?
Alta Rose - Been there, diane.
judy3ca - cavey, ROFL
footballfan - You sure did, Diane.
Erin - There are going to be big cuts here in california
Sharon - daughter needs computer guys... gotta sign off
Alta Rose - Been there, diane.
Sharon - talk to you later
Michelle - Many of our state's districts are cutting days. Mine is one of the few that isn't
Sadie T - Sharon, your daughter needs computer guys??
Erin - Oh diane, that's a bummer
Alta Rose - G'night, Sharon!
footballfan - bye Sharon
naneb - who was it that said they have read the new Jonathon kellerman book? was it good?
Grace/IL - "night, sharon
judy3ca - Night, Sharon!

Sadie T - Bye, Sharon.
cavey - Oh Sharon, I'll MOTopolize you later with my thoughts.
Marcia/GA/1st - Bye all! Might go back to Routman for awhile.
Erin - cavey, post your MOT thoughts on the board...we all want to share
diane - i thought my district was safe, michelle, turns out they were just being really quiet about it
Michelle - lucky sharon's daughter. unlucky us...bye sharon
judy3ca - cavey, I wanna hear, too!
Kim/1/Ca - night sharon........
Sadie T - Yes, it's definitely strane in here tonight.
Mrs. J - We signed our contract in June for three years but the economic piece isn't settled for this year or the next
Erin - Our district froze all budgets for a month...no supply ordering, etc
Grace/IL - 'night Marcia
footballfan - Cutting PE?? Weird because we're ADDING more PE
Sadie T - I mean STRANGE in here
Alta Rose - Yes, cavey, do. I am doing MOT for the first time, so I am still learning....
judy3ca - Don't say I never gave you anything, Sadie.
diane - yeah, cavey, don't be shy with your thoughts...i'm going to reread chapter on questioning tomorrow...
Michelle - I must be a lot of people...I got another PM that (I think) wasn't for me...
Sadie T - Judy? What did you give me or what did I say...?
diane - well...in oregon you have to take pe methods courses to get certificate...i guess they think that we can teach the pe...which, i suppose i can
cavey - lol Erin
judy3ca - Oops, Sadie, it's scrolling quickly. After your last post I simply posted 'g.' It wasn't funny, sorry.
Sadie T - ROFLOL, thanks Judy, and Erin thanks for explaining. I'm a little slow.
Michelle - diane...so am i, because I'm beggining questioning next.
naneb - Michelle, sorry! I didn't mean that for you
Mrs. J - It is going fast tonight isn't it
footballfan - All we hear is that kids are fat and need more PE
naneb - yes Kim I have
Alta Rose - Cavey, I've only covered making connections and visual images. I suppose it's time to move on, but I could do lots more with visualizing.....
cavey - When I have some thoughts on MOT, I'll share. I'm in the absorption phase. Then, I'll go back with my highlighter.
Erin - Nan, lol, that pm came from me
Kim/1/Ca - We don't get ANY p.e. methods courses here, diane........
diane - great michelle, if you have fabulous ideas, post 'em...i'll post whatever i come up with...
Kim/1/Ca - Thanks Nan
Michelle - that's all I've covered, alta.
judy3ca - There are methods to PE?
diane - all i have covered as well...
Michelle - I get most of my ideas from the yahoo group.
cavey - Did Nan turn off part of the chat? WOW!
Michelle - and lots from Reading with Meaning. Those are my best 2 sources.
Alta Rose - Me too, Michelle.
footballfan - okay.. here's the game AGAIN
Erin - Gosh, when I was a teenager, I wanted to be out with my friends. How sad to be stuck at home on a Friday night
Kim/1/Ca - Of course, Judy. Visualize what you are going to do. Make a connection to it. Question it. Determine its importance. Then synthesize it.
diane - i do too, michelle...sometimes i can't keep up with all the emails though!!
naneb - I am not quite that powerful!! cavey!!
judy3ca - Kim, LOLOL
Kim/1/Ca - But first you have to master the vocabulary of the actions.
footballfan - okay it's 4 and 3. OSU has to score a touchdown to tie and keep the game going
Alta Rose - We are having to teach PE for the first time this year. Lost our specialists.
footballfan - OSU is on the 5 or 6
Mrs. J - OSU chokes! Miami wins!
footballfan - that's the game
footballfan - incomplete pass
Mrs. J - Uh, oh, penalty flag
Michelle - I'm so glad I don't have to teach PE at my school. I got a C in my PE Methods course.
Erin - Gonna go now. Promised my son I'd get off. Talk to you guys soon.
footballfan - nevermind
naneb - we have 3 PE teachers and really need 4, there classes have 50 kids
Mrs. J - Uh, oh, against Miami

Michelle - bye, erin/michelle
cavey - Bye Erin, didnt see you leaving. I was watching the game
Grace/IL - 'Night Erin
diane - lol, michelle, i'm afraid i didn't pay nearly enough attention in that class...
footballfan - Haven't won yet. OSU will get the ball on the 1. So they will probably get the touchdown. That means double overtime.
Michelle - well...the final exam was the day after my 21st birthday...
Michelle - bad timing.
cavey - Oh My Gosh. WhaT A gAME!
Sadie T - LOL Michelle
cavey - Michell, what class are you talking about?

Michelle - PE Methods class....teaching PE in grades K-6
Kim/1/Ca - NO, no....it is from the gifted child mag. Brad found it. It is about teachers as readers. Really good stuff.
brad - I sent Kim an article to help out her book group
cavey - Judy can pull off the skirt, she's the sleek one
judy3ca - Brad, I don't think a hoop skirt would properly accentuate my teacher vest.
naneb - we have been dodging snerts!!
Kim/1/Ca - No Cavey...i will send tomorrow.
Sadie T - ROFLOL @ Judy in hoop skirt and vest
footballfan - ah I see, Kim
cavey - Judy, we are not wearing those vests!!!
Mrs. J - What about your jumper, Judy?
judy3ca - cavey, aw shucks!
Sadie T - Just be sure not to kick footballfan out. LOL
brad - Am I really supposed to be guessing who footballfan is?
diane - lol, cavey...
Grace/IL - Uh, uh, Brad
cavey - Football is okay
brad - sis boom bah and all that
Mrs. J - Football fan is very polite
naneb - footballfan is one of us!!
judy3ca - Hi Brad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grace/IL - Football fan just turns off T.net during football season
footballfan - football season has gotten longer lately... sigh
cavey - Brad, you can't come late and expect to understand this chat
footballfan - I've discovered recruiting and spring ball.
brad - clearly, cavey
Sadie T - You can't come EARLY and expect to understand this chat.
Kim/1/Ca - Cavey and Sharon and Erin left.
footballfan - touchdown OSU
Michelle - I know...usually reported items are taken care of promptly
judy3ca - Brad, can you reserve books at your public library? If so, put a hold on The Little Friend.
brad - cavey's here
footballfan - this game won't end. The defenses are shot.
brad - I can. I thought everyone could?
Mrs. J - It is soooooooo good Brad
cavey - Oh my gosh OSU Did you hear that Brad?
cavey - It's okay Kim, I was the same color as Marcia
Mrs. J - It's no wonder, Kim
brad - Yes, Fiesta bowl and all. I suppose I should be thrilled but I don't follow and that wasn't my U
Kim/1/Ca - So annoying and just throws a wrench into the cohesion of our discussions. Everything was going so well and then .......... what a mess.
footballfan - where did you go, Brad?
brad - cohesion??? OUR discussions?
Kim/1/Ca - Same here, Judy.
cavey - Yes, our discussions are always so professional and esoteric
brad - I'm right here.
Michelle - how do you get the IP address?
Michelle - actually, brad, it's true
footballfan - where did you go to school. heh
brad - So, is footballfan Sharon?
Alta Rose - Michelle, they come on briefly as soon as someone logs on.
Mrs. J - So how do you know their IP? Do you write them down when they come in?
footballfan - Miami quarterback is out
naneb - when they sign on, the numbers are after the sign on, I copy suspect IP addresses
cavey - No Brad, but football is okay
Sadie T - When they log on it says the IP address and time. So when you see someone who looks suspicious.. like footballfan (LOL)... you can write it down or highlight it and copy
Gracey - See mine behind my name
Kim/1/Ca - it comes up when they log in.....I was able to report last time without it.
judy3ca - nan, that's sharp!
Alta Rose - So, Sharon's been and gone, brad.
judy3ca - I seem to have missed something--why is football okay?
naneb - I did copy footballfan (sorry) when they first signed on
brad - then who is football fan?
Gracey - Hi all. haven't been to a chat in awhile, what'cha talking about or reading
brad - OH!! I should have known

footballfan - Does my ip addres still have austin in it?
Sadie T - Footballfan is one of the regulars from the chatboard
brad - Reading Essentials by routman
Mrs. J - How did you figure out who football fan is Nan?

Mrs. J - Or was it Grace?
Kim/1/Ca - just numbers, lady.......LOL
cavey - Lost... Lost....Lost....Lost...
brad - Also, Fresh look at writing by Graves and Reading Instruction by Pressley.
diane - okay, brad, i'll ask your opinion...do you have reading essentials?
brad - So just pick and choose Gracey
brad - no diane
Grace/IL - I figured it out because of many personal conversations over time.
brad - but i'll be happy to offer my opinion
Gracey - I have an old Fresh Look, and have the Pressely. I'm on the yahoo mosaic webring
Alta Rose - So, were the snerts able to actually mess with the pms tonight? Didn't get any, so wasn't sure what was going on.
Gracey - Don't have Reading Essentials tho' mmmmmmm
naneb - that was just something that happens sometimes
Michelle - nan...but you have sure been kept hopping tonight! lots of new names popping up.
brad - PMS??
Grace/IL - Now I need to ask -- Are you a L.A. Raiders fan or is that UT's team also?
footballfan - lol
Gracey - Guess I missed some excitment
naneb - I open an email and just copy the names and ip addresses into the email
Alta Rose - LOL. Personal Messages, brad.
Sadie T - PM's = private messages
diane - lol, brad...i'm contemplating purchasing because the index looked great and people have been enthusiastic, but i'm looking at paycheck reduction
footballfan - UT = longhorns. I went to Texas Tech (Red Raiders) as undergraduate.
brad - PM's
Kim/1/Ca - Gracey sounds legit. We need to ask her QUESTIONS to be sure though.
brad - LOL, the index??
Gracey - Ask away.........

brad - fire away kim
Mrs. J - My husband went to Texas Tech

footballfan - Here's the GAME (AGAIN)
Alta Rose - Yup.
Kim/1/Ca - You are seeing Donald this late at night?
brad - I didn't mean to sneak those apples in, Michelle!! That was six years ago
Michelle - bye, diane...
footballfan - OSU WINS
Mrs. J - Miami loses
naneb - we had praire dogs in South Dakota too
judy3ca - Michelle, that reminds me of the old joke: Why is California like a granola bar?
Kim/1/Ca - Kim don't know football.
Grace/IL - Knew a gal from Lubbock who lived here for years. They went back to Lubbock when her hubby retired from the Illinois State Police.
judy3ca - Because when you take out all the fruits and nuts, you still have the flakes.
Alta Rose - Take Care, diane.
footballfan - nod Mrs. J.
Mrs. J - Oh, you beat me that time raider
cavey - little d- goodnight, kiss Don for us!
diane - yep, kim, a secret tryst
Gracey - I've seen the priairie dogs in SD
Kim/1/Ca - Prairie Dog Town? Sounds like the hot vacation spot.
footballfan - I miss Prairie Dogs, Naneb!
Gracey - LOLOLOL@ Judy
diane - lol cavey...night guys!
naneb - LOL!! Judy that is cute!!
Michelle - good one, judy
brad - night d
naneb - we used to fill their dens with water so they would all run out!!
Kim/1/Ca - har har har Judy........here's one.
cavey - Got any Virginia jokes Judy?
footballfan - Lubbock's a nice little town.
Kim/1/Ca - Skeleton goes into a bar.
brad - you all are sad
footballfan - naneb, why did you do that??
Grace/IL - Prairie dogs in Colorado, too. Used to dig their way through Loveland.
judy3ca - cavey, I rarely make fun of others, LOL.
brad - Kim, you promised no Calista Flockhart jokes tonight!
Kim/1/Ca - Bartender asks, "What'll it be?"
naneb - I was just a bad little kid!!!
Michelle - no, I'm happy.
naneb - peer pressure!!
footballfan - That's funny, naneb. Poor little things.
Kim/1/Ca - The skeleton replies,
naneb - here is my son's favorite joke!!
Kim/1/Ca - "A beer and a mop."
judy3ca - ROFL
footballfan - That's just a funny image to me, naneb. I'm just giggling
Sadie T - LOL Kim
Gracey - Anyone else stuck in the snow at school today?
naneb - a horse goes into a bar, the bartender says, "Why the long face!"
Alta Rose - LOL.
Sadie T - A rope walks into a bar....
Michelle - that's....not so good, kim
footballfan - school today?
Grace/IL - We used to drown striped gophers in the school playground. That's what we called them. I think the new name is 13 line ground squirrel.
Kim/1/Ca - BTW naneb.....I am APPALLED. Poor little prairie dogs.
brad - I don't get it
Sadie T - bartender says, "I'm sorry, we don't serve ropes here."
Michelle - no snow here
naneb - we did that too Grace, same way
Michelle - it's been in the 50's/high 40's.
Sadie T - So the rope walks outside, ties herself into a knot, ruffles the top of her knot, and goes back in.
Kim/1/Ca - just WAIT brad.........
Sadie T - Bartender says, "Aren't you the rope I just kicked out of here?"
footballfan - mean little kids. We just used to torture roly polys
naneb - Sadie, I love that joke too!!!
Mrs. J - My boys tell knock knock jokes about why different animals poop all over---then roar with laughter--they are 2 and 4
Sadie T - Rope says, "No, I'm a frayed knot."
Michelle - that's horrible, grace
brad - ba-dum, bum
cavey - Booo Sadie!
judy3ca - ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grace/IL - Even had to carry the water from across the road.
Kim/1/Ca - et tu, lady raider? little psychopaths, both of you.......
Mrs. J - Oh, that's bad, Sadie
Alta Rose - Oh, gotta love that bathroom humour, Mrs. J!
Kim/1/Ca - 3 legged dog walks into a bar.........
footballfan - heheh
judy3ca - That's my favorite kind of joke, Sadie--and I'm betting you're a big word play fan, too.
Mrs. J - We got three inches of snow last night, in the 20's No school til next week though
Kim/1/Ca - Bartender says, "What'll it be?"
Grace/IL - Some farmers hitched up hoses from their car exhaust to the gopher holes.
naneb - Grace, we used the hose and had a sack at the other tunnel to catch them when they came out
footballfan - lol naneb
Kim/1/Ca - Dog says, "I'm lookin' for the man who shot my paw!"
naneb - I love those kinds of jokes
cavey - Okay, I did kill a frog once so I could dissect him for a science project, but that's it!
Kim/1/Ca - GRACE? YOU TOO? I am surrounded by little animal killers in here?
judy3ca - Grace, my husband does that with the lawnmower exhaust.
Gracey - Stopped snowing, but is sleeting now. Expecting anout 8-10 inches. I'm in CT
Grace/IL - Kim, ROFL
Michelle - are you the same kids who would go out cow-tipping?
naneb - anyone everplayed Balderdash? that is a lot of fun
Alta Rose - Here in Alberta they just shoot them.
footballfan - roly polys aren't furry like prairie dogs. I'm not in their league
naneb - never went cow tipping, but I did take kids snipe hunting!!
Alta Rose - The gophers, I mean.
eilene/il - Gracey, you got the storm that just missed us. whew!
cavey - Well, I do pour gasoline down the yellow jackets nests
Kim/1/Ca - roly polies have the cutest little feet.......
brad - Oh, Nan, that reminds me. The game you want to get to build your kid's vocab is "Apples to Apples" It comes in 2 Jr. Editions too
Grace/IL - Hey, there was a bounty on pocket gophers. We got 10 cents for a set of gopher paws -- big money back then.
Gracey - Hubby's family likes to shoot squirrels, was Thanksgiving entertainment one year. YUCK!
judy3ca - Good night, friends.
Michelle - we had balderdash. I never got into it.
footballfan - Just think. OSU started the season by slaughtering the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Whodathunk it?
Kim/1/Ca - Good night judy....happy reading!
Alta Rose - Take Care, Judy.
footballfan - pocket gophers?
Gracey - bye Judy
eilene/il - Night, judy
brad - Judy, you might like "Apples." Happy reading!
Sadie T - Judy, you're leaving? Good night!
naneb - people eat squirrel here
Michelle - what are roly polies? are they potato bugs?
Kim/1/Ca - So, you had a bunch of little gophers running around in wheelchairs, Grace?
Gracey - Not expected to stop until tomorrow sometine
Mrs. J - Night Judy
Mrs. J - Pill bugs
Alta Rose - So....I'm dying to know...Why is Brad banned in Australia?
brad - Pill bugs Michelle
cavey - Bye Judy. Well, I guess that means I have to go too. Since we are the same person.
Kim/1/Ca - Or were they fit with prosthetic feet?
eilene/il - I used to be cruel to fireflies...but right now gnats are feeling my wrath!
footballfan - mmmmm pill bugs
naneb - brad, I bid on an Outburst Junior and went to bed when there was 15 minutes left and I lost it
Grace/IL - Pocket gophers have little pouches inside their mouths and carry the dirt out of their tunnels that way.
Gracey - They live in the rural part od state and think of squirrels of rodents like rats
Michelle - what do people do with gopher paws?
brad - that's sad, Nan. We love Apples. We got Chelsey Apples Jr. for Christmas
Sadie T - LOL I was picturing gophers that fit in your pocket
cavey - Start with rodents, end with rodents
Grace/IL - Kim, we used traps for those things -- crunch!
naneb - Who makes that game Brad?
brad - I haven't ebay-ed in a loooong time. I got too po'ed at some "snipers."
Alta Rose - LOL, Cavey!
Michelle - are pill bugs the same as potato bugs?
brad - Out of the Box, nan
brad - I think you can get it at Kaybee though
naneb - thanks
Mrs. J - Never heard of the Apples game, Brad. Tell me more. How old is Chelsey?
cavey - Goodnight all!
brad - Chelsey will be eleven later this month
Gracey - night caveey
footballfan - what is an ebay sniper?
Mrs. J - Night Cavey
eilene/il - night, cavey!
Kim/1/Ca - (running from the room screaming doing her best Marlon Brando as Kurtz immitation: OH THE HUMANITY!)
Alta Rose - 'night, cavey!
brad - night cavey. still counting on that cabin
brad - ebay sniper is someone who swoops in and outbids you at the last minute.
Kim/1/Ca - stupid eBay snipers lay in wait and then outbid you at the last minute when they think you are sitting pretty.
Gracey - ROTFL@KIM
brad - Apparently there's a real knack to it that I have too much of a life to learn
footballfan - I don't know what a potato bug is. Pill bugs are those things that roll up. YOu know
eilene/il - oh, that's got to hurt, brad. hehe
Mrs. J - Isn't that kind of the point Brad?
Grace/IL - When one lives on a farm, one can't have those critters digging up the crops.
Alta Rose - Some people have too much time on their hands!
naneb - that is what happened to me last night
Michelle - yeah, that's a potato bug.
brad - Yeah, but somehow they use fancy equipment to know just when the auction's about to close, and BAM they getcha
footballfan - oh. yeah. I just think that meant I didn't need the item anyway.
Mrs. J - What is this apples game like?
brad - They getcha good, Like Shania
Gracey - very good Brad
Michelle - never heard of Apples either. And we love games.
eilene/il - hmmm, fancy equipment? like a computer?
Mrs. J - My daughter's very "in to" games right now
Kim/1/Ca - It's only happened to me a couple of times but I was annoyed because I am trying to find platters to go with my favorite china.
Sadie T - LOL Eilene
brad - In Apples, you get a hand of nouns (mostly proper but some common) like Princess Di, Grand Canyon, Broccoli. Then the judge throws out a "red apple" (continued)
Michelle - we have about 50 games here.
naneb - Brad, I am looking at that game and it looks great, Thanks!
Gracey - I've never ebay-ed
naneb - http://www.otb-games.com/apples/apples_jun.html
brad - The "red apples" are adjectives. Like "corny, gorgeous, intriguing." (continued)
Michelle - I haven't either...I don't need another method for spending my money
eilene/il - I've ebay'd once or twice. I have since forgotten my screen name, but it was fun.
Gracey - but have a friend who uses our computer so girlfriend doesn't know what he bids on and spends
Sadie T - How many people can play?
brad - The judge decides who's noun best fits the adjective. Object is to get rid of cards.
footballfan - don't start, Gracey, it's addictive
brad - I'm thinking reasonably, about eight to ten at most
naneb - I bought a model of my car on ebay
eilene/il - have to be careful about who you're buying from, etc. I bought the best Disney/View Master game from it.
Alta Rose - I never have ebayed, either.
Gracey - I spend enouch money just wlaking into a bookstore or online book stores
brad - It's really fun, cause there's a speed element. Last one to play a green apple (noun) has to return it to their hand, so it forces people to think quick
naneb - I bought a printer and a hard drive
Kim/1/Ca - I tried buying boxes of books on eBay...parents cleaning out closets? But the boxes usually have a lot of commercial crap. And the booksellers swoop in and snipe you if you find a good deal.
Mrs. J - sounds interesting. How does judge decide which one fits best--or is that the teacher/adult role
brad - I'm a games freak as well as a film freak too
Grace/IL - Kim, have you tried that place in NC that deals in discontinued patterns? I'm having a senior moment on the name.
Kim/1/Ca - Did you see The Mothman Prophesies?
Alta Rose - brb
brad - It's completely subjective. People take turns being the judge and it helps to know the judges taste
eilene/il - speaking of online bookstores. Kudos again, Michelle. I somehow manage to get 80 to 90 dollars of books for just around 35 at bookcloseouts. go you!
Gracey - game sounds interesting
Kim/1/Ca - NO grace.........but i have been very lucky on eBay. Most pieces I got from Canadian sellers. An English pattern.
eilene/il - Kim, I saw the Mothman Prophecies. Pretty freaky!
Michelle - my mom gave me back all my old formal dresses....saying I can use the material in my class. They are pretty funny looking.
Kim/1/Ca - There is a book, right?
brad - OH, I forgot. You don't get rid of cards, you pick up a new one each time. You're trying to get a certain number of "red apples" adjectives. Depends on how many are playing how many you have to get to win
naneb - Kim, there is a place online that will hunt for pieces for you
Mrs. J - Haven't seen Mothman Prophecies. Just saw a preview tonight--must be it's going to be on soon. Looks freaky
eilene/il - ((didn't like the black ink))
brad - It's fairly cheap and there's tons of cards. Along with Chelsey's junior version, I got an expansion pack
Grace/IL - Hi eilene -- I missed your earlier entrance.
naneb - I have a really old Wedgewood pattern that was my husbands grandmothers and I need 2 placesettings
brad - We have a certain set of friends that always ask to play it
Gracey - Haven't seen Mothman Prophecies. Richard Gere right?
eilene/il - thanks, grace. I usually sneak in, ninja like.
Mrs. J - I used to love scary movies. I'm turning into a wimp as I age--can't handle them at all anymore
Michelle - eilene...haven't seen you in a while. glad you are having luck with bookcloseouts.
footballfan - so this apples game is good?
Gracey - Me too Mrs J. Just told someone that the other day.
Michelle - same with me, about scary movies.
eilene/il - yeah, I've been sort of neglecting anything "professional" for a while. My brain is getting fried, methinks
Kim/1/Ca - you gotta move fast with bookcloseouts, though........sheesh. don't let it sit in your cart too long.........someone will just come along and pick it up.......!
brad - Nan, if you're trying to increase vocab, there's a description of each noun and adj. on each card
Mrs. J - brb
naneb - here is a link to it http://www.otb-games.com/apples/apples_jun.html
footballfan - Should I get junior for third grade?
eilene/il - Kim, that's what happened to me. I held onto Wake Up House too long. went back and Poof! gone
Michelle - yeah, that happened to my cart once. everything got reshelved.
naneb - Kim, I found that out the hard way too, I lost some Polacco books by not buying them right away
brad - Junior would probably be good for third grade
Grace/IL - I have a set of Mikasa china that's discontinued. I picked up the first pieces really CHEAP when it was fading out, then spent $100 for the last platter.
brad - I think there's two junior versions
Kim/1/Ca - yeah, i had an Alma Flor Ada book........My Name is Maria Isabel. POOF! Waited a day. Bad move.
naneb - I have an order coming from bookcloseouts and one under the desk, that is my hideout for boxes of books
eilene/il - So, Kim, any other plans for the book club?
footballfan - hee hee just ordered it on ebay
Michelle - Usually the ones I want most are the ones that end up not being shipped.
brad - My daughter's is 9 , but I think there's one for 7-9
naneb - I am going to look on ebay for the apples game
Gracey - What'cha reading in book club Kim?
Mrs. J - That's better. Too much red, LOL. Now that the crowd has thinned out, there's more to choose from
footballfan - it's there
Kim/1/Ca - same here michelle........but, I did get about 8 books today for about $24...and one is a hardcover.
eilene/il - Mrs. J, the mysterious lady in purple.
brad - And the snerts are gone. See what happens when I'm late?
footballfan - naneb I think there's enough for both of us
Michelle - I always wait until I have my minimum order for the coupon to work. the coupon that expires mid-January is very good.
eilene/il - Snerts?
Kim/1/Ca - Well.......I am going to start with a poem First Reader by Billy Collins. You know it?
brad - Kim, what games do you all like to play?
Michelle - $10 off instead of $5
Grace/IL - Heading out. 'Night all.
footballfan - night grace
Kim/1/Ca - Good night, Grace!
brad - Michelle, what games do you all like to play
Alta Rose - Good night, Grace.
Sadie T - good night,, Grace
eilene/il - Yeah, Kim. I have a book of Billy Collins poems.... Night Grace!
Michelle - bye, grace!
Mrs. J - Night Grace
Kim/1/Ca - Well, I HAD a minimum order but then some of the titles didn't ship.
Gracey - I think I've heard it or read it
Michelle - we play a lot of different games. my son's favorite is Life.
Kim/1/Ca - I am going to ask everyone to share their attitudes toward reading..how it affects classroom practice. I am going to share the research.
eilene/il - hmmm, never had that problem where they didn't ship the books I ordered. Interesting.
brad - My attitude is "Reading is good." Thanks for asking
Mrs. J - My daughter is obsessed with Battleship right now--and Boggle on the computer
Kim/1/Ca - No money for Books, I was told.........so we decided on articles but then principal didn't hand them out until friday afternoon.......no note of explanation.
Gracey - Kim is this professional or student. I'm guessing prof
Michelle - I like Clue, we also play Sorry, Scrabble, Mastermind....
Sadie T - I have a very positive attitude toward reading.
naneb - Brad, we loved Trivial Pursuit and Balderdash and Scruples
Kim/1/Ca - yes........an alternative staff development option at my school. Instead of the talking head workshop.
Sadie T - Kim, that's too bad they didn't include an explanation.
brad - I love Mastermind. Do you know how many sets of that I've gone through since I was little?
footballfan - Did you get it naneb?
brad - Scruples is good. Have you heard of True Colors
Gracey - We are starting to read STW this week. First prof group. Principal bought books, but I already owned
brad - We keep losing the little pegs
Kim/1/Ca - It is a brand new thing. First one on Monday...dont'know how many or what the 'tude will be.
Sadie T - Talking head or bookless book club. Good options.
naneb - no, it is too much, I might as well buy it new
eilene/il - Brad, I'm going to share the games I play, even though you didn't ask, hehe. Scrabble, Battleship, Backgammon, Clue, and Masterpiece.
Sadie T - Sorry.
Michelle - reading is thinking.
Alta Rose - We play Jr. Pictionary with our kids and Rumicube is fun, too.
Mrs. J - We have a RWM bood study starting this month
brad - We also got family Roller Coaster Tycoon board game for Christmas
Michelle - reading is a ticket anywhere....reading is the best thing we all have together.
eilene/il - Reading is interacting
naneb - we used to play Yahtzee all the time too and we had this pig game that you rolled like dice
Mrs. J - (And we get books, LOL)
Kim/1/Ca - Well, Sadie.....it is a start. I will have to see how many "die hards" I get. It may work out.
Mrs. J - Oops, BOOK Study
Gracey - Been wanting to start a club for awhile, but noone was interested.
brad - Nan, we have Showdown Yahtzee
eilene/il - Kim, you'll knock 'em dead!
footballfan - ah okay naneb
naneb - I sau Uno attacks and that looks like fun
Kim/1/Ca - That is the whole point, eilene.....the interacting. The "response" being the essence of literacy. that reading teachers make better teachers of reading....
Gracey - Good luck Kim.......
eilene/il - I want to start a club as well, Gracey, but am afraid no one will join
Mrs. J - Oh, the pig game, I loved that
brad - We got Uno Attack too. If you like Uno, you'll like it
Kim/1/Ca - I will also have hot cider and cookies.
naneb - footballfan, did you buy it on ebay?
Mrs. J - Makin' bacon--always cracked me up
eilene/il - Exactly, Kim!!
Gracey - Hubby reading over shoulder, said loved to play anyone in Yahtzee. What is Showdaown Yahtzee?
Michelle - My son got UNO Attack for Christmas
naneb - my kids at school love to play Uno during advisory
Sadie T - They will come for the hot cider and cookies.
Kim/1/Ca - You have to push it, Gracey. My principal is supportive, one of the reasons she recruited me. but she is not so hot on follow up............
Sadie T - If you feed them, they will come.
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Sadie!
Mrs. J - I like Uno because it doesn't take up a lot of space and you don't have a million little pieces
brad - We've already played it so many times, Michelle. It's based on an old game, which I still have, called Card Attack. Uno company just took it over. THe machine is much better though, and my wife didn't know I had it. (I have over a hundred games) so she got it. But machine's better, so I don't mind
Kim/1/Ca - Sadie.....it got so confusing in here. Did you say you read the Alma Flor Ada book?
Alta Rose - Is it voluntary, Kim?
naneb - I have a good game to play at school, Life stories, no one wins they just interact and share their life and comunicate it is fun and sometimes silly
eilene/il - I have a lot of teachers working on higher education credits, so the schedule may not be right. Too bad, because I think it would be great.
Gracey - Mine too Kim!!!! Except its a him. He is going to read also. District reading person pushed it
Michelle - we have a book group for MOT, an informal friend one also with my two friends...the "Mosaic Trio"...and we are starting a fiction book club at school when we start school again.
footballfan - night all. Thanks for the conversation
Kim/1/Ca - yes, alta. some will be required to go to the "balanced literacy" inservice cuz they need it. the rest can choose me or the balanced literacy......i figure some will still choose bal lit because they won't WANT to read.
brad - In Showdown Yahtzee, (I've never had a chance to play yet) you are controlling the categories. Like Threes and small straight. If someone gets better than you (You have two threes, they roll four threes) they can steal the category. something like that
Gracey - night football
Sadie T - No, I haven't read the Alma Flor Ada book (unless you mean My Name is Maria Isabel...) but I want to read it, after reading your posts on the chatboard.
Mrs. J - We have an Art of Teaching Writing one that meets monthly and RWM will be monthly too
eilene/il - Have you decided if it will be all professional books, Kim?
Mrs. J - Night football fan
Alta Rose - g'night, football.
Sadie T - Good night, footballfan.
Kim/1/Ca - Gracey, I will share my experiences as they come along. do you go to the prof reading board here? This is where we usually hang out.
Kim/1/Ca - good night, lady........
brad - Nan, stories with holes are fun too, but not sure they'd work with your crowd. I used them with gifted
naneb - I can't believe I am still here, I am so tired
Michelle - Now that I've finished the Art of Teaching Reading, I feel like I really need to read A of T Writing
brad - You finished, Michelle?
Gracey - I have about 15-20 prof books on side of bed to read, plus Lovely Bones, Miss Isabel Speaks her Mind, new Koontz, Girl in ? dress, Sweet Potatoa Queens, so many books,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Kim/1/Ca - No, eilene. I think that is what principal wants. I am thinking it might be good to mix it up a little....you think? or maybe prof stuff now and then switch to fiction in the summer. We can meet at Barnes and Noble.
Michelle - yep, it was a reading marathon, brad.
naneb - is this the new Sweet Potato book?
brad - good for you
Gracey - Read Art od Teaching Writing for a class, with a Fletcher book
eilene/il - I like the B&N idea. Sometimes we need to get outside of the school environment.
Michelle - I'm trying to read a little faster. This book was easy to read.
brad - I was thinking of re-reading Ray's WYKBH today
Alta Rose - Or perhaps at someone's home?
Kim/1/Ca - It is really good, Sadie. About the power of literate teachers and how something magical happens when the reader meets the text...the Magical Encounter. About how our ELL kids DESERVE (all our kids, really) access to the BEST literature we can offer.
Gracey - Yes, a southern book someone rec over the summer because I hate my name
eilene/il - although, I think it really depends on how often you meet. Will that determine how many articles you are to read?
Michelle - I have a few Fletcher books. Haven't gotten a lot out of any of them. Don't understand the big fuss over them
naneb - I have the first two Sweet Potato books, I didn't think the new one was out yet
Mrs. J - I like the Craft Lessons books Michelle
Gracey - Saw Fletcher in person, very dynamic speaker. Enjoy his books, but tend to repeat each other.
naneb - they are real people in Jackson, Missisissippi
Kim/1/Ca - I will have to see about money, eilene. so far, there is none because we have an idiot for a governor.....doofus.
Gracey - Nan - don't remember which one it is hold on...
Michelle - I have the craft lesson books and the Writer's Workshop book. I guess I like something that has a little more meat on it.
Kim/1/Ca - I may just have to PROVIDE articles. Better than nothing but...........would prefer books.
Kim/1/Ca - Maybe the die hards (I am hoping for some die hards) will actually BUY books.
brad - dream on, kim
Kim/1/Ca - need my tonic water...brb
Michelle - that's what I was thinking...but I know it's only a few who would do that in my school, Kim
Sadie T - Kim, that would be wonderful if you could get a group who would actually buy the books.
eilene/il - oh, lovely, Kim. I think that any "genre," exclusively professional or not, wouldn't truly matter. After all, the aim of the book club, as I see it, is to get the readers enthusiastic to share their opinions, and therefore discover the value of reading and sharing.
Gracey - Oh and I bought Women of Hollering Creek after reading MOT but haven't read more than a few stories
brad - I think working with the articles is fine. This may be their first encounter with any sort of research. Sure their eyes might glaze over. . .
Kim/1/Ca - Actually.......I would like to start small. a nice little core group. 5? 8?
Mrs. J - Most teachers in my district don't want to do anything outside of contract time and don't "have time" to read
Sadie T - Gracey - by Sandra Cisneros?
Kim/1/Ca - Oh gracey.......just dug out woman hollering creek again..........
Michelle - Brad...about Art of Teaching Reading.....there is a lot that I want to incorporate in my room, but some of it will have to wait until next year. some I can do this year.
eilene/il - our district bought every teacher F&P, and Classrooms That Work. Did they do any follow up? Noooo. Most teachers just use it to collect dust. I think I'm one of the few that have used it.
Mrs. J - Articles might be a plus, actually because they are shorter and less intimidating
brad - same here, michikim
Alta Rose - Maybe if you start small, some will become enthusiastic and it will spread to the others....
Kim/1/Ca - that's my thought, Alta Rose.
eilene/il - I wish I could be there, Kim.
brad - Ooh, I'd love that. My principal did buy us all Yardsticks. ;-( I already had it.
Gracey - Yes by Sandra Cisneros
Mrs. J - The thing is, they are right, they are busy and they have a lot on their plates.........but I just don't get how they can NOT keep up on things
Kim/1/Ca - She bought you a yardstick? How thoughtful.
brad - Michelle, I'd love to discuss it with you. I think A of TR is great!
Gracey - Oh and also got the YaYa books to read and let's see just bought an Allington. I LOVE books!!!!
Sadie T - It's good. I like House on Mango Street - my students read it.
Alta Rose - These collegues that won't read would be horrified if they discovered that their family physicians didn't read research, wouldn't they?
Sadie T - LOL Kim. I want a yardstick too!@
Sadie T - LOL Kim. I want a yardstick too!
eilene/il - Well, if you can get some sort of continuing development units attached to it, then you wouldn't have a problem
Kim/1/Ca - Love Allington.
brad - to beat those little @#$%s, kim.
Mrs. J - We all were given Dancing with a Pen, Reading For Life, Guided Reading, and 3-5 got Guided Reading 3-6
Kim/1/Ca - Good discipline tool, that yardstick.
Michelle - Personally, it would be very hard for me to meet with a group much outside of school hours because of child care issues.
brad - KIM< What's Dancing with a Pen like?
Michelle - brad....you were gone the last couple of days when I was looking for you.
Kim/1/Ca - Dancing with pens is like dancing with pencils.....usually.
Gracey - My district buys the Wong book for new teachers, but that's about it
eilene/il - As for discipline tool, I prefer those paddles with balls attached. I don't have to move as much. The ball always comes back
brad - BUT MICHELLE, If we used that silly-ass staff meeting for book and research talk, then you'd be under obligation and it might be productive for once (sneer) (I can relate on childcare)
Gracey - LOL@eilene
Sadie T - I posted a link on the board to an article by the author of Dancing With a Pen. But, I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the book.
Gracey - Unfortulety also already had a copy
Michelle - I read GR 3-6....but after reading ATR, I have a lot of misgivings about the former.
brad - Really, Michelle? Where was I? Deep in EBSCO? Or maybe my family keeps complaining I'm on here too much
Sadie T - Gracey, mine too, we got the Wong book.
eilene/il - I agree, brad!! Instead our grade level meetings are all about improving and preparing for the Test
brad - Sadie, I know you posted the link. That's why I'm interested in the book
Gracey - I'm half way throught A of TR
brad - At least yours are abouat THAT eilene. Mine are all about "how fast can we get out of here"
Gracey - I've also had to by some of these for classes. 2 to go for Masters in reading
eilene/il - okay, you're all going to yell at me, but who wrote Art of teaching Reading?
brad - What are your misgivings, Michelle?
Kim/1/Ca - Eilene! That is blasphemy!
Mrs. J - It was the first professional book I bought Brad. (Then of course, they bought them for us). I don't have my copy here, which is surprising since I lugged so much crap home with me for break!
Gracey - Lucy Calkins - just saw her speak about 2 months ago
Michelle - brad...honestly, we have begun substituting the our staff meetings for MOT groups. But they are talking about holding the fiction book discussion groups at other times.
Mrs. J - It goes into the process pretty in depth
eilene/il - I knew it!! I'm just a second year teacher with a concentration in Anthropology, so please don't be too angry
brad - I could dream of that at my building Michelle
Michelle - my grade level meetings sound like brads
Sadie T - Eilene, we forgive you.
Gracey - I'm fourth year - tenure this year (maybe)
Mrs. J - We are all Learning Network Schools and that is a required resource
Kim/1/Ca - Lucy McCormick Calkins, eilene!
brad - So Michelle--misgivings?
Gracey - My grade level meetings aren't bad, but I run them as lead teacher
Mrs. J - It talks about forming intentions, composing and drafting, and publication
eilene/il - whew! glad to be forgiven. (am so uninformed on this topic, to be truthful. You all are my link to new research in this area.)
Mrs. J - It also talks about writing stages
Kim/1/Ca - My favorite meetings are where we have to identify our weaknesses, according to the god-almighty test, and then come up with soluttions and post them on handy dandy little oversized sticky notes all around the room.
Michelle - brad....I love how Calkins emphasizes the importance of teaching TALK before expecting the kids to write about their reading...
Alta Rose - LOL, Kim!
eilene/il - oh, I hate those sticky notes!!!
Sadie T - LOL Kim. On little oversized sticky notes around the room?
Kim/1/Ca - WEakness: Kids arriving at school with few social skills. SOLUTION: Birth Control.
brad - Kim, that's awesome. Cause all we had to do was fill in the numbers on some paperwork and think of some "strategies" and turn it in. I haven't seen it or heard about it since. At least you got stickies.
Mrs. J - Conferences...planning....modeling
Gracey - LOL@Kim
eilene/il - LOL@Kim
naneb - Kim, we had to make a spreadsheet with all of the kids we teach and their scores on each sub-section and highlight everyone below the 50% and show how we address those areas in our lesson plans, it must be on our desk at all times
Sadie T - LOL@Eileine&Gracey
Mrs. J - Ah, how true, Kim
brad - michelle--here's where I'm at with that. I'm required a grade-a-week and I don't know about grading "talk"
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, HUGE stickies. And then we got to SHARE. It was touching. I don't think some appreciated my birth control suggestions. Can't figger that one out.
Michelle - in the Guided reading book, talk isn't as important. it's just something they do here and there
Gracey - Oh nan we do that with the DRA - fun testing starts next week....
eilene/il - Brad, how can you be "required" a grade a week? that's insane!
brad - Because everyone doesn't contribute all the time. . . and sometimes you just don't have much to say and other times you do. . . just difficult
Michelle - Currently, i use the reading journals as described in GR&W, but next year they will be totally different.
Alta Rose - Does the admin actually follow up on that, brad? Are you asked to produce these grades every week?
brad - So far I've been safe. Alta. Starting third quarter it goes all on computer downtown. Electronic gradebooks
Michelle - next year, talk will be the emphasis the first couple months.
Kim/1/Ca - Do you have your kids keep reading journals? Keep track of what they read?
Sadie T - I like the big stickies... always want to take them with me.
naneb - Brad, I have them write a summary or do a graphic organizer or something to use for a grade
brad - It's especially insane for soc stud and sci
Kim/1/Ca - I ask cuz Routman is really hip on that. I don't do it, personally. She does........
Michelle - kim, the reading journals have 4 sections....Reading Log, Reading Interests, Response (which is just letters back and forth to the teacher), and Book Club.
brad - Reading logs (as in title date read, etc.) or journals (as in some type of response?)
Gracey - Okay 1 in the morning gotta go to bed. See ya' all on the webring
Mrs. J - I don't like grades at all anyway
naneb - Kim, we do AR and my kids keep a reading log, one of my lowest readers read 22 books last nine weeks
Alta Rose - Goodnight, Gracey.
Mrs. J - Fortunately we only have to give them at the semesters
brad - michelle, I like those, but I could never do it in second.
Sadie T - Good night Gracey
eilene/il - bye, gracey!
brad - night gracey
Michelle - I plan to keep the first 2 sections. I like them. the next two will look very different next yera.
Michelle - year
Michelle - no, I wouldn't do it in 2nd either.
Kim/1/Ca - keeping track of books read....i think.
brad - Consarnit! these Grades! They keep me from teaching the way I need to!
eilene/il - I haven't done any reading journal this year, although I'm hoping to start next week
Michelle - thank God my principal never looks in my grade book.
Mrs. J - Grade book? What's a grade book? LOL
eilene/il - me too! Poor brad!
Sadie T - Time for me to go, good night everyone.
naneb - i am the gradebook person at my school, it is all computerized
Alta Rose - Whose policy is that, brad? Local admin? Is it possible you can talk to someone about how absurd that is?
brad - I could always make it up. LOL
Kim/1/Ca - Good night, Sadie!
Michelle - I like having the letters because I like the personal connection I get with each kid, but I think I could still have that connection without the letters. I want the kids to respond with other kids about books, not just with me.
brad - Oh, my building principal thinks grades are absurd at this level, but it's a district thing. I keep giving her standards-based report cards and she claims to be showing them to her superiors, but so far--nothing.
Michelle - and in the sample classrooms in GR&W, the classrooms are so dang silent. there's something wrong with that.
Kim/1/Ca - "It is silence we need to justify. Not movement."
brad - Atwell has kids writing to each other once a week and to her once a week, Michelle
brad - OOh, Kim. Who said that?
naneb - my principal thinks classrooms should be quier!!
Michelle - I noticed that, brad...In the tiny bit I read of In the Middle
naneb - 00ps!! should have been quiet
naneb - Yikes!!
Kim/1/Ca - I saw it at a Math conference awhile back.........didn't ask . should of...........
brad - Ya' know, there IS something to be said for silence.
Kim/1/Ca - Yikes, Nan.........kind of progressive down there in Nawlins huh?
Mrs. J - My problem is getting the balance. My kids can't seem to get the idea that talking is not yelling
Michelle - but...I like Calkins' argument that they first need to be able to talk about their thinking. Especially since so many of my kids are ELL, I think it makes a lot of sense.
brad - However, they are CHILDREN and I think classrooms are just built too small to handle all the bodies.
eilene/il - mine, neither, mrs.j. although sometimes, Silence is beautiful!!
naneb - the AP came in one time last year and told me my kids were too loud, I had three groups each at a computer writing and editing their stories, and one group meeting with me and it was noisy but it was terrific!! The collaboration was great
Kim/1/Ca - yes..........as long as they are constructively talking, i have no problem. periodically, though.........
brad - We all need classrooms twice the size of what we have now. Just for ease of movement. I know my rooms would be quieter if my kids could be a little further apart and not TRAPPED in a cell called a classroom all day
Mrs. J - It's hard, because some kids just can't concentrate with a lot of noise and there isn't anywhere for them to go that's away from it
eilene/il - Brad, you hit upon the biggest problem of the system! Teacher to student ratio....
Michelle - I think one reason my writer's workshop has just the right amount of noise is because it used to be silent...so they are used to writing in a quiet room. maybe
brad - No, I'm talking about the physical size of the classroom
naneb - hey, did you know Mississippi is the first state in the country to have a computer connected to the internet in every classroom in the state?
Mrs. J - I agree with Brad--If I could knock down the wall between mine and the room next door, I'd be all set
Kim/1/Ca - I dont' think Luis shut up for an entire day. A comment about everything. Yak yak yak. I told him that I didn't want to hear ONE WORD out of him for FIVE minutes. The whole class watched the clock.
eilene/il - oops! didn't see your post. sorry
Michelle - actually, my classroom is a decent size.
naneb - I just want my own classroom back!!
Michelle - but when I taught these same kids in a room half the size two years ago...i was going nuts. no place to put them all.
Mrs. J - Did he make it, Kim?
eilene/il - Well, I could use with some extra square footage, to speak honestly. 32 kids is a lot.
Kim/1/Ca - My Classroom is a Trailer. Yessiree.
brad - The rooms look fine when it's just me, but when you get 25 fresh bodies in there with their winter coats and boots and bookbags (who started that asinine trend?), it's quite crowded.
Alta Rose - Mine too.
Mrs. J - Yup, yup, yup, Brad
Michelle - maybe that's why the talk in my classroom works so well...there's enough room for them all to spread out.
Kim/1/Ca - NO. He did not make it. Then he got cute and went and got tape and put it over his mouth. I just KNEW somebody in authority would walk in, LOL!
eilene/il - I think I'm going to teach my kids to sing "Coal Miner's Daughter.
Michelle - and i only have 23 kids.
naneb - I have another teacher in my classroom!!
eilene/il - just for the heck of it, you know.
Alta Rose - Eilene--??
Kim/1/Ca - Bookbags? How about rolling backpacks? Yiks.
naneb - ROFLOL!!!
Mrs. J - Why do you keep getting student teachers Nan?
brad - a little mixture of both, kim
Kim/1/Ca - I taught my Kinders to sing All My Exes Live in TExas.
naneb - I think I am the only secondary sped teacher who has taken the class
brad - WHY DO SECOND GRADERS NEED BOOKBAGS?
Michelle - oh, how i hate the rolling backpacks.
eilene/il - I read Wayside School is falling down, so anybody that talks constantly, I just call Mac
Mrs. J - Mine like to sing "I like big butts, and I cannot lie" thanks to Shrek
Michelle - lol kim
eilene/il - Love it Kim!!
brad - OR ROLLING BACKPACKS?
Kim/1/Ca - I would ask, periodically if there was an adult in the rooom, "Hey guys.....where do all the exes live?" and they would yell out, "IN TEXAS!:
naneb - I wil soon have a student teacher so that will be three teachers in one classroom!!
Alta Rose - Bookbags instead of Backpacks?
Mrs. J - We ASK for book bags, Brad, starting in kindergarten
brad - ROFLMAO @ KIM
brad - why on earth, michikim?
Michelle - no one carries book bags around here. it's all backpacks.
Alta Rose - Same here, michelle.
Kim/1/Ca - We have a bunch of those gags. I say, "Okie dokey" and they say "Artichokie."
Michelle - but those darn backpacks do take up a ton of space
brad - OH bookbags, backpacks, I mean the same thing (do you honestly think these kids carry a tote bag. LOL)
naneb - we do not issue lockers so everyone has a backpack and a big coat
Mrs. J - You know the end of Shrek where they sing all the songs, some idiot decided to put a song about big, round butts in a childrens video
Kim/1/Ca - "Okay fine" "On my spine."
eilene/il - we used to have our students use those clear backpacks, but that got pushed aside.
Michelle - we say Okie dokie...smokey
Kim/1/Ca - "Understand?" "Rubberband."
Michelle - smokies, i mean
Mrs. J - We ask for the bags so kids can actually get notes, homework, etc. HOME
brad - They just end up CRUMPLED IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BACKPACK, Michikim
eilene/il - I say, "Cut me some slack, jack!"
brad - The same ones who wouldn't get it home without backpack that is
Mrs. J - Actually, my pre-K son totes one back and forth every day even though he has something in in only once or twice a month
Kim/1/Ca - "Hit the road!" "Jack!"
eilene/il - and then I end up hearing 20 third graders saying that eventually.
Michelle - on the supply list that they send to all the homes before school starts, a backpack is listed.
Mrs. J - But....in a perfect world, the parent actually looks in the back pack when the child comes home
brad - Just get one folder and carry it back and forth. There is no earthly reason for anyone under the age of 10 to have a backpack.
Kim/1/Ca - When they do something cool, I sing, "I like it, I love it, " and they respond, "I want some more of it."
eilene/il - It's still startling to hear my words come out of their tiny mouths.
brad - (LOL< I'm a hypocrite. My daughter has one.)
Mrs. J - I don't know...they always seem to lose the folders...they keep the backpacks
Michelle - they leave the folder on the bus, at day care center...on and on. that's the general concensus on why we need backpacks.
Kim/1/Ca - LOL, eilene..........like hearing them correct each other, "that is INAPPROPRIATE!"
Alta Rose - I think the folders are more likely to get lost, brad... At least the backpacks are attached to them.
brad - It's just INSANE! Tell the truth. There's everything in that backpack BUT homework!
eilene/il - my students usually end up just cramming it into their desks.
Mrs. J - My son has taken up saying, "I am so humiliated" (He is 4) He says it whenever he doesn't like what someone does
brad - My son (5) has been saying he's "in peril"
Alta Rose - Not so, brad. Not so.
Kim/1/Ca - Oh, man........I have a couple of kids whose desks look like bombsites. Truly. I say, "Jordan...there are animals living in your desk." very seriously........
Mrs. J - Planting seeds of responsibility Brad
eilene/il - lol@brad
brad - And "you're going to get screwed."
Mrs. J - "In peril" LOL over what?
Kim/1/Ca - It is the truth, brad. Everything in the world is in JORDAN's backpack.
brad - I don't know, he'll just come in and start telling you some story about how his hot wheels or yoshi or something is "in peril."
eilene/il - my nephew (4) says, "Got me." and "What's that all about?" His mom, my sister, thinks he got it from me.
Kim/1/Ca - This kid is no bigger than a minute. And she carries the world, like brad says, in her backpack. She just unloads on the floor.
Michelle - my son started saying "AW, that's SWEET" when he was 3. why can't he pick up the mulitisyllabic vocabulary?
Alta Rose - Yeah, not sure where that one came from, michelle. they all say it.
Michelle - that and "AW, that's GOTTA hurt!"
brad - They all come in every morning and SPEND HOURS unloading their backpack, and then later when It's time for writing and I ask where their folder is, they say, "It's in my backpack."
Michelle - I know where my son got it from...his father.
eilene/il - okay, I have a question about reading text vocabulary, if anyone can help me.
naneb - my son always said, yup, that'll bruise!
Michelle - oh....a real question!
Kim/1/Ca - true story, brad! no kidding! it takes DAYS to unload the junk everyday.....but when you ask for the book they borrowed? You get a V-8 slap and they run to the backpack........
Michelle - ask!
eilene/il - My book series, Scott Foresman, third grade, has about 6 new words for each story. So far we've been doing Cunningham's Rivet and ProveIt! to introduce and discuss those new words...
brad - Honestly, my children fear theft. they told me so themselves when I asked why they load up their entire desks every day to go home. Seriously, you can walk around at the end of the day and at least half the class have their desks absolutely barren. Life in the big city.
eilene/il - but lately, I'm getting bored of doing that. Is there anything else I can do, other than Word Maps?
Michelle - do you have to introduce the words before beginning reading?
eilene/il - No, I don't. Michelle. Nothing says I have to do that
Kim/1/Ca - Bingo.....?
Michelle - maybe just tell them...and then mention it again when it comes up, if needed? (I'm dizzytired)
naneb - I sometimes gove my kids a psot it note and have them write down the words they think are important to the story as they read, then we look at the list together after we read and decide which words were truly important to the story
Kim/1/Ca - The best way to get them to remember the words is to have them used more than one time.......and to get them to use the words in their writing. PUt them up and everytime somebody uses one in writing or speaking, put star on it.....
Mrs. J - What grade, Michelle?
Michelle - maybe I'll make something to eat before bed. only ate a chicken soft taco today
Mrs. J - Oops, I meant, Eilene?
Alta Rose - what she said!
eilene/il - third, Mrs. J.
brad - sometimes, eilene, I just put the words on a transparency. Underneath the word, I put the actual sentence containing the word from the text. And then they do a little "repeat after me." It's just to build fluency so they can focus on comprehension when they come to that word.
Kim/1/Ca - Supplemented, of course, by lots of good quality independent reading. It is during independent reading that sight words and vocabulary are consolidated.
eilene/il - That's a good idea, Kim.
naneb - I use GTCW for vocabulary words too.
Alta Rose - Somebody else talked about post-it notes, too, and said you hand them out before reading and have kids write down either words they don't know or think somebody else won't.
naneb - I take the sentence straight from the story
Michelle - but if they don't know the word, they wouldn't guess it in GTCW, right?
Michelle - or maybe some would know the word?
Kim/1/Ca - yes...the post its can be kept on their desks....they can refer to them.
naneb - I have done that too, plus I have paper on the bakc of my door and we write Words too Good to Forget
brad - You don't cover the vocab word, Michelle.
Alta Rose - You'd count on one or two knowing it, I think.
Mrs. J - What kind of words are we talking about, Eilene?
eilene/il - We've been doing that, the post-it note thingy. I was just trying to think of something fun, since vocab is so boring!
Michelle - oh, ok. duh
Kim/1/Ca - You have to use the words a lot yourself, eilene........
naneb - I have weird students, they can figure out the word orally but then can't read it when they see it
eilene/il - These are the vocab words for the story selection in the reading series.
Michelle - I like to use new words a lot.
brad - Eilene, Words, Words, Words by Janet Allen is online free at www.stenhouse.com
Michelle - with the kids.
Mrs. J - I like that idea, Nan--too good to forget
Kim/1/Ca - It takes lots of repeated exposure for the vocab to set in and take. The best thing is the independent reading, truly.
naneb - we have words like gargantuan and phenomenal
brad - I don't really stress vocab. Should I?
Kim/1/Ca - OUtstanding, Nan. Exquisite, really.
brad - At this level, anyway?
eilene/il - thanks, brad. I'll go check it out.... later.
Michelle - yeah...when I was reading A of TR...I learned a new word that I can use....sacrosanct. she used that word quite often.
Michelle - I wouldn't remember it if I hadn't read it over and over.
naneb - I like letting the kids pick the words that they don't know, just because some editor selected a word doesn't mean it is the best word for your students
Kim/1/Ca - At this point, Brad, they are picking it up at a phenomenal rate. The focus usually begins when they transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."
Michelle - I don't stress vocab much...only words that are important to understand the story.
brad - See that's what I think Nan. So we just do vocab in context.
Alta Rose - And I've also learned many times I think the kids will know specific words...and they don't.
eilene/il - I look at words as tools. the more tools they have at their fingertips the more options they have at sharing their thoughts.
Alta Rose - We give Stanford tests every year. Vocab is always the lowest area.
brad - The transparency thing I did was mostly for words I knew were in their oral vocab but they might have trouble decoding. Thus, the fluency
Kim/1/Ca - There is a good article in this last Reading Teacher about this subject. The stress is.........INDEPENDENT reading. Lots and lots of it.
Alta Rose - Makes perfect sense, Kim.
eilene/il - but you're right, nan. most of those vocabulary words is only for ease in comprehension of the story. I don't know if they can apply them to another context.
Michelle - yeah, I know that I need to think about vocab more. That's one reason why I'd like to do more with TALK than i have before.
brad - I'm going with Kim on this one. And there's no way you can truly plan their exposure in Indpendent Reading
naneb - I look at the regular ed reading teachers and they have kids write definitions and sentences but they still don't know the words when they finish, my kids don't read as well but they remember a word when they chose it because it had meaning for them
Kim/1/Ca - And using the words in the classroom setting, encouraging the kids to use them, especially in writing.
brad - UGH. hated definitions
brad - AND sentences
Alta Rose - Often we underestimate the words the kids can learn.
Michelle - those vocab exercises didn't work for me, and I was an intellegent kid
Kim/1/Ca - There are other articles in JAAL about this too. They CHOOSE their words from their reading. And bring them in to share with the class.
eilene/il - ((Maybe I'll teach them Patsy Cline's "Crazy" instead.))
Mrs. J - I have a teacher I coach who still insists on having kids write definitions for spelling practice
Kim/1/Ca - I will teach mine, "That's Amore" by Dean Martin.
Mrs. J - and sentences
Kim/1/Ca - When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore...........
eilene/il - I only had them check out definitions when the spelling words were all homophones. (?)
brad - You coach? (I remember that specifically in eighth grade, and ninety percent of the time, the words weren't in our classroom dicitonaries)
Michelle - I loved writing things like "Expedite is one of my vocabulary words this week."
naneb - I try to get them interested in words, my son had a friend who loved the sound of some words, we still say a word and someone will say, "that's a Nicky Fulton word"
eilene/il - Oh, I liek that, Kim!!
brad - See, that's why I dont' do it, Michelle. LOL
eilene/il - *like
Mrs. J - Yup, I'm released half time
brad - linoleum--great words
eilene/il - I end up singing most of the spelling words. Not that that would help them understand the meaning of it, but it does have it's entertainment value.
Kim/1/Ca - yes, goes well with upcoming Valentine's Day and all.........that and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart"
eilene/il - shellac -- great word
brad - Oh, yeah, shellac
naneb - my kids had a histoy teacher who would sing the answers to a test while they were taking it, not the questions just the answers
brad - eilene, where do you pull your spelling words?
Michelle - yeah, those useful, everyday words. sheesh
Kim/1/Ca - I like Saskatchewan.
eilene/il - Scott Foresman
naneb - shellac would be a Nicky Fulton word
Kim/1/Ca - Albuquerque.
eilene/il - shellac just rolls off your tongue.
Alta Rose - LOL, Kim!
brad - IS it systematic and sequential? (dont' hurt me)
Michelle - I used to be a representative to saskatchewan.
naneb - abalone
Michelle - loved the word
Kim/1/Ca - How about Banff? Say that one. How would you like to be from Banff?
naneb - serendipity
Michelle - why is colonel spelled colonel?
brad - I have a game called Abalone
Michelle - doesn't make sense.
eilene/il - I love Banff! sounds like a Bat-Man onomatopeia (?)
Kim/1/Ca - Alaska.
Alta Rose - Your geography is to be commended, Kim...
Michelle - why does the l sound like an r?
brad - I used to wonder that myself, Michelle
naneb - how about oxymoron what a great word
eilene/il - Was that wacky question for me brad? because I really can't figure it ou
Michelle - my son loves the word onomotopeia. he says it's his favorite word.
Kim/1/Ca - I used to be fascinated by these words as a little kid: Canadian. Connecticut. Science. Sequence.
naneb - I love that one too
brad - Yes, Eilene.
naneb - and alliteration
Michelle - scissors?
Kim/1/Ca - oh, i love onomonopaia......!
Kim/1/Ca - tink tink tink.....
brad - beverage
eilene/il - have no idea what you mean, then... clarify, please.
brad - does the spelling words come from the story you're reading?
Michelle - comfortable. never quite sure how to say it.
Alta Rose - When my kids were little I had them at a checkout and my 5 year old was bothering her little brother. I looked at her and said, "Stop antagonizing him!" The salesgirl muttered that she (my daughter) wouldn't understand that word. I just looked at her and said,"She knows what I mean!"
brad - Come--for-double, michelle
Kim/1/Ca - conundrum.
eilene/il - lol, I sometimes say (in french) "Quelle frommage!" which means "What cheese!" instead of "Quel damage" which means "Too bad!"
naneb - we have family words too, like hugenormous!!
eilene/il - No, the spelling words are not based on the story. They are phonics/word family based.
Michelle - around here, people often forget a syllable "comftable"
Kim/1/Ca - LOL, Brad. I said that to Danny. "Stop antagonizing him!" and Danny replied, in a haughty voice, "I'm not 'tagonizing him. I'm bothering him."
eilene/il - economicable
Mrs. J - ergonomci
naneb - here is a word for you, the school district where I teach is Pascagoula
Mrs. J - oops, ergonomic
brad - Panagea
Kim/1/Ca - Monongahela.........in PA
brad - beluga
eilene/il - okay, if the plural of octopus is octopi, why isn't the plural of bus bi?
Michelle - sadie! you back for more!
Sadie T - Still here?
Mrs. J - Sadie's back
brad - It's gonna take a lot of river. . .
Sadie T - What are you guys doing - reciting the dictionary?
brad - the Monongahela and the O-hi-o
eilene/il - Nobody here but us chickens!
Alta Rose - Hi Sadie!
Michelle - saying cool words.
naneb - these are the words my 8th graders are learning to read, they are words like, economical and uncomfortable, and impressionistic
Michelle - what else?
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, and if you have more than one Lexus (humor me, okay........like THAT would happen on our salaries.......) do you have Lexi?
Mrs. J - Oh, how I love, O-hi-o
brad - Bolivia
Kim/1/Ca - Ooh, POULTRY.
eilene/il - Madagascar!!
Michelle - how do you in canada and ohio pronounce Oregon?
brad - poultry? nah
eilene/il - ack!! don't answer that, it's a trap!!!
Mrs. J - Cambodia
brad - Or-uh-gun
Michelle - remember spelling Ohio on the rubic's cube?
Alta Rose - Let me think, Michelle.
Alta Rose - Or i gun
naneb - here is a word for you Tchouticabouffa
Mrs. J - Or-uh-gon in MI
brad - Lake Titicaca
naneb - that is a river in Mississippi
eilene/il - nan! what a word!!!
eilene/il - Walla Walla
brad - Bouffant!
Mrs. J - Ok, Brad, you win. i have always loved that one!
naneb - pronounced - Chew ti ca buff
Kim/1/Ca - indoubitab indoubat indoubitably indou..........aw forget it.
Mrs. J - (Titicaca, that is)
Alta Rose - Oh my, nan!
naneb - ooo, Kim I love that one too
eilene/il - If pro is the opposite of con, what would the opposite of "progress" be?
Sadie T - LOL Eilene
Michelle - that's a good one, eilene.
Mrs. J - Too funny, Eilene
naneb - when I was in high school we would try to find really obscure words to use
Kim/1/Ca - and fish should be spelled ghoti
eilene/il - (Mark Twain actually said it first.)
naneb - epitome
Kim/1/Ca - How tendentious, Nan.
Alta Rose - How about a small town close to where my mom lives? Sicamous. (Sick-a-moose.)
eilene/il - ampersand
Kim/1/Ca - Canada got all the GOOD names.
naneb - Escatawpa, Picayune, Gautier all towns near me
Kim/1/Ca - Toronto. Montreal. Calgary.
eilene/il - Boston: Wocester, pronounced Wooster
brad - (nan's geographically impaired)
Kim/1/Ca - Sicamous. Vancouver. Newfoundland. Labrador.
Michelle - boring names around me...Portland, Woodburn, Salem. we do have Tualatin, Willamette, Chemeketa, Tigard and Lake Oswego, though
naneb - Gautier pronounced Go shay
brad - Worchestire Sauce (sp?)
eilene/il - nan lives in native american country, it seems
naneb - LOL!!
Michelle - I grew up in Vancouver, Washington.
Mrs. J - So, michelle, what's the "correct" way to say Oregon?
Alta Rose - One time my dad was travelling with my husband in our province and they came across the town of "Dogpound." My dad laughed and laughed and said, "See, in B.C. we have good names." To which my husband replied, "Yeah, like Sicamous!"

Michelle - we know Cairo. at least in oregon we do.
Sadie T - I've been to Salsipuedes (town in Mexico) - means "Get out if you can"
Alta Rose - Well, Kim. You've earned Brownie points. Your knowledge of Canadian geography is impeccible.
brad - Well, I best mosey, I have to go climax in the morning

Michelle - here
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, wonderful, Brad. Glad to know things are back to normal.
eilene/il - Prettiest name: Lake Louise.
Alta Rose - Wow, Eilene. You too!
brad - When will they do that Michelle?
Sadie T - lol, Michelle, good thing you added the "here" part
Michelle - when we all are leaving a child behind
Kim/1/Ca - It's that socialist medicine policy that has me drooling..........HIGH TAXES (homer drool)
eilene/il - only sometimes, alta. I can only name drop when it impresses people. hehe
brad - I leave my children behind everyday.
Sadie T - lol Michelle
Kim/1/Ca - Good one, Michelle.........I think we need to park all the kids left behind on the White House Lawn.
naneb - I tried but they kept hanging on and following me!!
brad - I'd like to get a few's behind, if you know what I mean
Michelle - you know, how we will all be turned to private funding when we are leaving a child behind.
eilene/il - those little leeches!
Alta Rose - LOL!
Michelle - lol, kim. i agree
Kim/1/Ca - Let Bush and his volumes of experience with PUBLIC education take care of 'em......oh, wait! He never attended public schools?
naneb - I used to tell them they were the parasites of my life!!
eilene/il - amoeba!!!!
brad - How bout a countermovement? No Child Pushed Ahead?
naneb - more like blood suckers!!
eilene/il - osmosis
brad - pseudopod
eilene/il - bivalve
Sadie T - LOL Brad!!
Michelle - yeah, but his wife, the former librarian, knows all
Kim/1/Ca - Dang.......well,gee........... guess he'll have to yank the silver spoon out of his mouth and dedicated Laura will have to stop all those photo ops and actually TEACH children.
Sadie T - That just might work....
eilene/il - doppleganger
naneb - maybe we should all go on strike until they listen to teachers!!
Michelle - i'd love to see a nationwide strike.
Kim/1/Ca - Why yes.........they know all. They must. they can pontificate and legislate. and walk away.........
naneb - now, there is a word!! doppleganger!
brad - Let's start it! That'll put the ESIA on the map.
eilene/il - listen to us,but we have nothing to say that's of any importance. After all, we're only in the front
brad - Has anyone seen Susan Ohanian's site?
eilene/il - I love doppleganger
Mrs. J - Yeah, except we can't strike
Michelle - it sure would
naneb - might get some action, hey Michelle
Kim/1/Ca - dirty scum sucking no good for nothing political windbag dogmeat pig droppings........
Michelle - no, brad
Michelle - that's right...those darn "right to work" states
eilene/il - "I @#$%in your general direction!"
brad - KIM is not me, she's Yosemite Sam, the rootinest-tootinest. . .
Michelle - sounds more like "right to get pushed around and treated as a slave" state to me
eilene/il - (ack! they butchered a Monty Python phrase!!)
naneb - Ha!! ha!!, we are reading Holes and Kim you sound just like Stanly and his dirty, rotten, no good, pig stealing, great great grandfather!!

Kim/1/Ca - OOOH...pig stealin' I like that one.
Michelle - kim...not quite as eloquent as your latest posts...but i still get your idea
Kim/1/Ca - What yahoo site?
brad - Ya' know, I just love how they just keep "getting tougher" and nothing ever happens.
naneb - have you read that book? Holes! It is terrific!
brad - SMELL THAT??
brad - Z'AT'S COFFEE!!
Mrs. J - The mosaic site
Michelle - i love Holes. I finally bought it recently
Kim/1/Ca - yeah, well.......(shuffle, shuffle) y'all know whutimean........
naneb - my 8th graders love it!!
Kim/1/Ca - No. Not familiar with it.
Michelle - what's coffee? i don't get your drift.
naneb - they beg to read it, actually I bought the CDs so we could listen to it
naneb - Holes, by Louis Sachar
Michelle - oh....WAKE UP...that's what you mean.
Michelle - still need to eat.
Kim/1/Ca - You have to wake up and smell the coffee, michelle........get it?
brad - I'm talking about how politicians keep "cracking down" on education but nothing happens. They need to WAKE UP and SMELL THE COFFEE
Michelle - yeah...obviously I haven't had any coffee in quite some time
Sadie T - So.... how will our No Child Pushed Ahead work? LOL
Kim/1/Ca - You know...I am going to revamp the Ed 500 class. I am thinking we should have a couple "books in common." Children
Kim/1/Ca - Children's lit....like Missing May. You recommend Holes?
brad - I refuse to pass any children until this idiotic mandated scripted standardized high-stakes bullcrap is removed. (and grades too)
naneb - they need to come into a school and see that it isn't schools that are the problem, let's work on families and parental responsibility
eilene/il - that's because they're politicians, brad. If they would quit thinking about it in regards to the money, we might be able to do something
Michelle - I talked with a friend who works for a congressman recently (democrat), and she says they've gotten lots of calls from teachers lately...
brad - amen nan
naneb - here is the truth, politicians #1 job is to get re-elected! period!
Kim/1/Ca - That's why I suggested Birth Control. Good solution.
Alta Rose - Well, I gotta go, guys. Goodnight!
naneb - we end up doingeverything but teach, characters, values, morals, counseling
eilene/il - huh. At parent/teacher night, they did free cholesterol testing. I was all for condoms, myself
Mrs. J - Night Alta
Michelle - She didn't say anything about what her congressman is planning to do about it, though
brad - I didn't elect this one, apparently that Floridian Katharine chick did the voting for all of us
Sadie T - Good night Alta.
eilene/il - Night, Alta!
naneb - Kim, Holes is great for upper elementary and middle school
Mrs. J - I'm going to go now too.
Mrs. J - See ya all later
eilene/il - night, mrs. j!
Sadie T - In California our students will have to pass the exit exam to graduate beginning with the current 11th graders..
brad - Cholesterol and condoms: the New Parents Night. I can see it on EBSCO now
Michelle - I'm only good for another 5 minutes myself.
Michelle - keeling over. kidneys aching.
Sadie T - NONE of my eleventh graders have passed yet.
eilene/il - oh, we're losing her!!!
Kim/1/Ca - Yes I will be as accountable as you want me to be. But....fair is fair. If I am accountable then YOU are accountable. Have as many children as you want. But take care of them. Feed them. clothe them. READ TO THEM every night. Get them to school every day. Take them to the doctor. Visit the school. Help with homework and in the classroom.
naneb - we have end of subject tests in high school that they must pass to get credit
Michelle - what is EBSCO?
brad - How much more accountable can I be?
naneb - plus starting this year 3,5 and 8th graders must score a certain score on the MCT or be retained
eilene/il - thanks for asking that michelle. I don't know what it is either
Kim/1/Ca - a database
Michelle - oh good, glad it's not just me.
naneb - come for a confernece when you say you will come
Sadie T - What state are you in Nan? I forgot.
brad - ebsco is that search engine where sharon and kim are getting all their research
naneb - Mississippi
Kim/1/Ca - I have to go..........too tired to remain. zzzzzzzzzz.........
Sadie T - Good night Kim
naneb - me to Kim, I had school today
brad - yeah, i'm really going too now.
Michelle - oh? is it some elite thing? can anyone use it?
eilene/il - In chicago, they closed down three schools that were not performing to city standards. So, they overloaded other classrooms, instead of decreasing the teacher/student ration. Logical? nope
Kim/1/Ca - Well, next week we are back to the grindstone. It has been swell. (((smooches)))
Michelle - ok...before I faint dead away...
naneb - I think it is 3rd grade this year, 5th grade and 8th next year
Sadie T - Good night Kim, Michelle, Brad... is everyone leaving?
eilene/il - I'm off, too. See you guys!
naneb - Michelle, talk to your librarian they should have the password for you to access it, I can do it from school without a password but at home I need one
Sadie T - Nan, at least if they start with lower grades, it isn't such a shock... they don't reach 11th without being able to pass to graduate...
naneb - I am going to bed too
Sadie T - Me, too, good night!
naneb - I think that is why they are doing it this way, plus the test is criterion referenced and based on our state standards so they should be able to pass it
Sadie T - Nan, our test is criterion-referenced but the standards are too new - they haven't really had them until now
