judy - Hi Kim! Bought any good books lately? LOL
Kim/K/SCa - As for books........hmmmm.........I have tried to be good. FINISHED Reading With Meaning.
judy - Didn't you just love Reading With Meaning? Did you feel like you could use much of it with your Kinders?
Kim/K/SCa - I loved RWM! I just absolutely FLEW through it! Wow!
Kim/K/SCa - (((((((Kathy)))))get my suggestions for your list?
judy - I did, too. When one has the MOT background, RWM becomes a pleasant supplement. I loved every bit of it.
Barb/2/NE - Hi guys! I had such a great time last Friday, I'm back!
kathyb1stia - Hi, all... none of you know it, but I have no voice left, thanks to Kim. I have been ROARING with laughter until I lost my voice.
Kim/K/SCa - Well THATs what you get for asking...........!
Kim/K/SCa - BRADLEY will you puhleeze make up your mind?
nan - steph- it sounds like I am doing the same thing you are doing to study for the test. I'm highlighting and then I was going to right things down
Barb/2/NE - Kim, he wants to look nice!
Brad/3 - LOL, I'm just black and I'll never go back
judy - Are you sure, Brad? LOL
Kim/K/SCa - Oh brother........and they say WOMEN can't decide what to wear.....
Brad/3 - From now on, no one can be black but Brad, okay?
kathyb1stia - Brad is looking for just the right color to fix his mood! LOL!
Brad/3 - <----who doesn't think too much of himself
Kim/K/SCa - Brad is Back in Black.........
Kim/K/SCa - I just LOVE what that color does for your eyes......................
judy - Okay guys, small evidence this is all working: one of my third graders stayed after school to ask, "Do you really like Gail Gibbons?"
Brad/3 - Well at first I chose summersky, which I thought would be a nice shade of blue, ;and then oooh.
Brad/3 - then I chose another color which was too close to Kim's
kathyb1stia - Okay, Brad, you can have whatever color you want. But, I am really glad you are here.
Brad/3 - hoo, boy, 5 1/2 to go
judy - Days????
Brad/3 - days
Kim/K/SCa - Knock THAT off right now...........I go to June 21st so don't rub it in.............
Brad/3 - when did you start kim
Kim/K/SCa - gooood thing, Judy
judy - Right, Kim, June 14th here. But I did notice that for the first time in a long time, we actually start school AFTER Labor Day next year.
Kim/K/SCa - August 3.......year round here
kathyb1stia - I will come help you pack, as I am out in 3 days with kids and one without!
Brad/3 - aha. I would do year round if we had air conditioning
Kim/K/SCa - ......but my NEW school is "traditional." So I have till Labor Day.
Kim/K/SCa - But I will probably go in in mid August to set up the room.....MY OWN ROOM.
judy - I worked year round for several years and loved it. Now I'm on a traditional calendar.
Brad/3 - around here we start late Aug. I kind've wish we would start around Labor Day and go a little later in june, cause chances are good it'll be hotter in late Aug than early June
kathyb1stia - We will start in mid August, so we can get 8 days in BEFORE Labor Day... strange IA laws.
Kim/K/SCa - Got good news today. I have medical insurance through August 30th! So no need to buy COBRA benefits.
Brad/3 - everybody who says they've done it has loved it, but for me, not without air conditioning
judy - Brad, it's hot in CA in August, too, so I'm glad about the later start.
Brad/3 - so, about that MOT, (wink wink KIM)
kathyb1stia - Hey, we got a FROST on May 21st. Usually the last one is May 3-5th!
Brad/3 - we did too, kathy
Kim/K/SCa - I love year-round. Not crazy about this schedule change, believe me...........But in the high desert in July, Aug, you can't take them outside if it is over 100 and it is ALWAYS over 100...........
Brad/3 - set record low
Kim/K/SCa - So BRADLEY........have you finished reading a certain book yet........????????
Brad/3 - I really enjoyed the article you sent Kim. Did that come off the internet? I noticed web address in corner. (Translation--Are there more like it? And was this all?
kathyb1stia - I am glad your children are picking up on which author we all like... Gail Gibbons is one of the good ones!
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi everyone!
Brad/3 - hello alta rose
judy - Hi, Alta Rose!
Kim/K/SCa - Um.......I got the original link from Jan. This one, I just put "David Pearson" in the search engine and up it came. So I don't know if there are more. If you want excellent articles I have a coupla sites for you.
kathyb1stia - Hi Alta Rose
Barb/2/NE - Kim, I loved your post about packing up your books! I sent it to a fellow book lover!
Kim/K/SCa - (((Alta Rose!))))
Brad/3 - Let me tell you, Kim, the first thing I did was to go through and read all your notes. LOVED the posty notes about the dishtowels!!
Kim/K/SCa - Thank you Barb......I thought it got a little long..........but there was so much more to share.
Brad/3 - Send them email Kim
Barb/2/NE - Wasn't that a nice post that Barbara Gruber wrote to Mae?
kathyb1stia - Dishtowels, you mean tablecloths -- don't you...
Kim/K/SCa - OH no! I missed it Barb! And I was just there................Is Mae coming, btw?
Alta Rose / 1 - Barb--Yes.
Kim/K/SCa - There are some good Debbie Miller classroom pics in Reading with Meaning. Definitely TABLECLOTHS
Alta Rose / 1 - I didn't know anything about the creator of Math Their Way being murdered.
Brad/3 - judy doesnt' stay long these days
kathyb1stia - That was a great response from Barbara Gruber, I thought so, too!
Brad/3 - do what alta rose?
Kim/K/SCa - Yes, Alta Rose............Kathy B gave me the details awhile back. Very suspicious circumstances.
Alta Rose / 1 - Brad--??
judy3ca - Brad, if you can change colors, I can change names, LOL.
Brad/3 - math their way?
Kim/K/SCa - Whew, Judy........thought we offended you.
kathyb1stia - I knew about MTW's Mary being murdered, but so little has been said lately, that I didn't know anyone still thought about it.
Brad/3 - judy, I wondered what you did with the 3ca
Brad/3 - when was all this murdering going on?
Kim/K/SCa - I think her hubby had something to do with it. But I also think Condit is up to his eyeballs in Chandra..............
judy3ca - Oh, Kim, do you know a new young teacher at my school was an intern for Condit? Yikes!
Barb/2/NE - Hi Susie!
kathyb1stia - I am ROARing with laughter again... first colors, then names!
Kim/K/SCa - Late 70s early 80s..........She developed Math Their Way and made a LOT of money. Then gets killed in a "drive by" set up.................
Alta Rose / 1 - Brad, it was in the '70s. Barbara was replying to Mae's post, saying how ugly professional jealousy can be.
Brad/3 - when?
Kim/K/SCa - Oh Yikes, indeed, Judy. That man has a personality disorder.
Susie - is this a special discussion?
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi Susie!
kathyb1stia - Oh, it happened a LONG time away, never solved!
Brad/3 - i have to read this
Kim/K/SCa - Hi Susie, we are off on a tangent right now.........murder and mayhem
Susie - Is this a private meeting?
Brad/3 - Tonight, on a very special discussion. . . Kim finds out about dishtowels
judy3ca - Susie, we're actually here to discuss professional literature--we'll get going pretty soon...just warming up.
Kim/K/SCa - Brad......I will send you the glowing "obit" he wrote for his loving wife..........the one he probably killed..................
Brad/3 - A murder mystery remains unsolved and it's up to some fanatical MOT fans to discover the truth
Alta Rose / 1 - No, Susie. You are welcome! This is the professional reading chat. (MOT, etc.)
Alta Rose / 1 - Brad--LOL!
Kim/K/SCa - I would think Judy would know more than any of us since it happened in NORTHERN California...........
Susie - Hi, I am having trouble getting in.
Barb/2/NE - Can I share a neat picture book?
Brad/3 - what does professional jealousy have to do with the murder of Math Their Way lady. (this happened 20 yrs. ago?)
Alta Rose / 1 - My school is doing a Book Study on MOT next year, all due to what I've learned from this board.
Kim/K/SCa - Please, Barb.......unless anyone has more info on Mary's murder
judy3ca - Oh, right, Kim, I know all the inside info. I can't believe the guy had the nerve to run again!
kathyb1stia - YEs, please, Barb... do tell
Barb/2/NE - My son received this book, in the mail, from his godfather on his 12th birthday
Alta Rose / 1 - Yes, Barb.
judy3ca - What book?
Brad/3 - Just say it barb, I don't need the F and P book intro!!
Kim/K/SCa - Do tell..........
kathyb1stia - You are lucky, Alta Rose!
Barb/2/NE - You may have heard of this, A spoon for Every Bite
Susie - I am having trouble staying on.
Barb/2/NE - http://www.cincopuntos.com/product.ssd?s=61681437e7bf439f&c=97cd8d0766c84ee9
Kim/K/SCa - ...YES.... I have that one
Barb/2/NE - Brad, LOL
Barb/2/NE - Kim, Really?
Kim/K/SCa - Susie....it's Brad. He takes up so much room
Alta Rose / 1 - Tell us more, Barb.
Brad/3 - I'm just a little impatient these days, what with crazy ice cream shooters and math teacher murderers.
Kim/K/SCa - Yes..........really. Should I get it for a picture walk?
Barb/2/NE - Alta Rose, when I read it the first time to my class, it was right as I was reading MOT
Kim/K/SCa - ice cream shooters.............?
Barb/2/NE - Kim, Oh Yes! I'm not sure where I put it
Kim/K/SCa - okay......BRB and don't talk about me........
Brad/3 - at my school last week Kim?
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi Sandra!
Brad/3 - since Kim's gone, I have to confess
Barb/2/NE - so, since I was in the mist of reading MOT, I found that I read this book to my students in such a different way!
judy3ca - Hi Sandra!
Alta Rose / 1 - Barb, what age level is this book for?
judy3ca - Barb, what an insight! And people look at me funny when I tell them MOT changed my life. Thanks for the ammo.
Kim/K/SCa - FOUND IT!!!!
Brad/3 - I found myself thinking that way after reading WW. I would look at a book and think, "Hmm, this books seems to have a 'one setting, expanded time' structure"
Barb/2/NE - I found that I felt it was 'OK' to stop and let my students ask questions and discuss while we read
Barb/2/NE - before, I would let them ask questions while reading, but felt like I wasn't doing 'it' (reading books) correctly/right
Kim/K/SCa - pant pant pant..........oh, HI Sandra.......didn't see you come in........
Brad/3 - I loved the text structures in WW, because they were so different than what people ordianarily refer to as text structures, and yet they are more prevalent and detailed!
Barb/2/NE - Alta, hard to say what age level
Barb/2/NE - Brad, I can't wait to get WW
Barb/2/NE - Thanks Kim!
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi Sue!
Brad/3 - who was it recommending "Text Structures and Meaning" or something like that title
judy3ca - Brad, I really hate to mention another book, but....my study partner and I are reading Ray's new book on Writing Workshop and it is wonderful, too. I'm already wondering what to do now that she has me questioning some of the things I did this year.
Sandra - This is not working for me, can't get through.
Barb/2/NE - Hi Sandra!
judy3ca - Hi Sue
kathyb1stia - I've ordered WW and RWM, but have no idea when they will arrive...
Sue - Hi Barb
Kim/K/SCa - Brad, move over and let Sandra in.
Sue - Hi Judy
Brad/3 - judy3ca, I actually borrowed WW from university library adn was about to purchase when I discoverred she had written a new book. Which is worth my money?
Kim/K/SCa - Hi Sue
Brad/3 - What is up with this, are you implying I'm fat Kim?
Kim/K/SCa - You HAVE to get WW, Brad.
Sandra - Evidently I don't have sense enough to chat.
Sue - Hello Kim
judy3ca - Kathy, what fun reading you have to look forward to. I've set WW aside while we read the other one, but I look forward to getting back to it. I admire Ray so very much.
Brad/3 - I know I do but if the Workshop book is a little more updated with most of the same material. . .
Kim/K/SCa - Absolutely, positively NOT, Brad! I am saying than you are just spread out all over the place.............and you keep losing the remote control.
Brad/3 - I have to be FRUGAL, Kimberly
Alta Rose / 1 - Here's a topic for discussion. One of my collegues, who teaches Gr. 1 as I do, was saying today that he thinks this grade level is too early to focus on comprehension. He feels most are just at the "decoding" stage and we shouldn't worry about comprehension yet. I disagree. What do you think?
Brad/3 - the curse of a quick typer
kathyb1stia - I must find some more $$$.
judy3ca - Brad, well, the truth is she has ANOTHER book coming out in June or July, but I'm loving the Writing Workshop book so far. I've only read 6 or 7 chapters, so I'm still entrenched.
Brad/3 - I hate that mentality Alta Rose. (RWM!)
Brad/3 - Egad, Judy, are you TRYING to send me over the edge?
Alta Rose / 1 - RWM?
judy3ca - Disagree! Thanks for a good question Alta. What fun is decoding?
Brad/3 - (by the way, egad backward is dage)
Kim/K/SCa - Hoo boy...........Alta Rose. I think, as Debbie Miller does, that the strategies need to be taught "side by side" with decoding and word attack. And it is NATURAL to do so, especially with Read Aloud.
kathyb1stia - AR, I am with you... if you hold off on comprehension, then you seem to take away some of the motivation.
Brad/3 - Hand in glove, Alta Rose, one is not good without the other
judy3ca - BRB
Brad/3 - Decoding is a BLAST Judy with the right people and a little alcohol in the mix!
Kim/K/SCa - So you want me to read this book to y'all......or do YOU want to do it Barb?
Brad/3 - You know the deep end people are talking about. I think I'm falling off it tonight
Kim/K/SCa - I think of their brains as little scaffolds, A.R......like under the bleachers? You just give them all that good comprehension instruction, along with strategies for word attack, and this rich structure gets built.....
kathyb1stia - well said, Kim...
Brad/3 - That gradual release of responsibility thing? How do you all go about it?
Brad/3 - (I think of their scaffolds as little brains, but that's another story)
Alta Rose / 1 - Yes, I agree with all of you.
judy3ca - Brad, that is a phrase that rankles a little because to me it is simply what good teachers have done for year. We model, get the kids involved, and it becomes theirs.
Kim/K/SCa - Well, you have to teach the strategy and model it a LOT before you can start the gradual release of responsibility..........lots and lots of modeling then you SENSE when they are ready.
judy3ca - That would be yearS.
Kim/K/SCa - I just had a GRUESOME mental image, thanks to you Brad. LIttle Brains...........
Brad/3 - Okay, and I can go with that (rankles, Judy?) but in the meantime, (and I know this is petty) what am i doing for grades?
Kim/K/SCa - You are always assessing, Brad..........so you grade off of that............
Brad/3 - My district is moving to an online grading book next year (I'm flipping out) which can be monitored. If i'm not getting the grades in once a week, I'm screwed
*Barb/2/NE* - sorry, my computer crashed!
kathyb1stia - hey, what is with the ** stars, Barb
Alta Rose / 1 - Glad you're back, Barb!
Brad/3 - then maybe I'm confused about the way to teach the strategies still
kathyb1stia - Oops, so when your computer crashes, we see ***!
Kim/K/SCa - Last night one of my Ed 500 students presented her thematic unit. I was able to REALLY teach them about RESPONSE and mental images .... going off her presentation!
Alta Rose / 1 - Once a week? What kind of grades do you have to give?
*Barb/2/NE* - kathy, I can't relog on with the exact same name
Brad/3 - A, B, C, D, F
Brad/3 - Your basic letters
*Barb/2/NE* - kathy, lol, I'm seeing stars!
Brad/3 - Except that durn E
*Barb/2/NE* - thanks alta rose
Brad/3 - What was it about the E someone didn't like when coming up with these grades?
Alta Rose / 1 - No, I mean grades for what? Spelling? Math? They have to be updated once a week?
Kim/K/SCa - She has middle school kids. She used a book ....... "The House of Dies Grier?" She has special ed kids who can't EVEN write.......but the IMAGERY!! You shoulda seen the drawings, models...............
Brad/3 - yes, AR
judy3ca - Brad, can't you just give a grade from the rubric at the back of MOT? BTW, rankles = to cause irritation or bitterness in
Brad/3 - I know what it means, I'm just curious as to why it rankles YOU
Kim/K/SCa - WE had this huge discussion about mental images...........she related that her kids never saw any pics of the house. The drawings were from their mental images!!!
*Barb/2/NE* - Kim, that's cool!
Sandra - In NC we give Es instead of Fs. That seems strange to me and I have been here forever.
judy3ca - ROFL, oh, I thought you were picking on my old-fashioned language. I just get tired of new labels.
kathyb1stia - I think I should be in this class, Kim.
*Barb/2/NE* - Kim, we are all gifted.....some in the traditional sense, others in non-traditional sense
Kim/K/SCa - It was the perfect teaching moment. Too bad they were so tired. I was more excited than they were, I am afraid.
judy3ca - Especially when the new label makes it sound as if it's something we haven't been doing.
Brad/3 - Yes, Judy, I could give a grade from the rubrics in the back of the book. (Does anyone do this?) I just know having grades has been my greatest source of frustrations this year. (never had to do so in primary before)
Kim/K/SCa - I love the word RANKLES.
judy3ca - Wow, Kim, that is so cool!
*Barb/2/NE* - I love the word cadywompus!
Brad/3 - it reminds me of potato chips and raincoats
Kim/K/SCa - She is a new teacher with the WORST of the WORST. I was soooooooo happy she had success.
judy3ca - My favorite word is acetabulum.
Brad/3 - I like linoleum
Brad/3 - and indubitably
kathyb1stia - My favorite word is jayrackapoohcus...
judy3ca - Brad, I don't like grades very much. Fortunately I only have to use them on report cards.
*Barb/2/NE* - I have a question about reading a book that has vocabulary that is old fashioned
Kim/K/SCa - I like "tendentious."
Kim/K/SCa - "fractious"
Brad/3 - I hate them, I'm trying to convince my prince to switch to different method of reporting next year
judy3ca - OOOOH, Kim, that sounds great--what does it mean?
Brad/3 - what is that kathy
Alta Rose / 1 - HI Diane!
judy3ca - Hi Diane!
diane - hi everyone
Kim/K/SCa - Lotsa Luck Brad. You will RANKLE your cluster leader if you try to do that.
*Barb/2/NE* - I read _Flat Stanley_ to my students this month and found so many dated words (at least dated to them)
kathyb1stia - Brad, it is interesting that you are talking about grades and how often, etc. At the math standards meeting on Wed in my district we were responding to this very thing in Guskey's book (chapter 4).
Brad/3 - I'm dropping to 2 remember. Goodbye Cuckoo
Alta Rose / 1 - Reporting, we just give out E, VG, G, SS or AC--No letter grades.
Brad/3 - Guskey?
Kim/K/SCa - An argument that leads along a certain path (from tendency). I have yet to be able to really use it in a meaningful sentence.
judy3ca - We give 4, 3, 2, 1.
diane - i can't imagine giving letter grades to primary
Brad/3 - That's what I want, Judy related to a specific indicator and rubric
Kim/K/SCa - Has anyone finished Reading With Meaning...............?
kathyb1stia - Who knows, but grandpa would just say OH THAT IS JUST jayrackapoohcus!
Brad/3 - it's bizarre, is it not, diane? (another good word--Bizzare)
Brad/3 - me kim
Kim/K/SCa - or Bazaar...........
judy3ca - Brad, let me go find something for you.....BRB
Kim/K/SCa - YOU DID? really?
Brad/3 - I have an old board game called Bazaar, pretty good
diane - brad, my district just adopted rubrics 1-6. it's been challenging to parents, but a good system so far
Brad/3 - so kathy, who is guskey, and what was the thrust of your discussion (I like the word thrust too when used in this context)
Alta Rose / 1 - brb
Kim/K/SCa - Okay. I LOVED RWM. A good application of MOT. But...........what kind of kids does she have? Gifted and Talented?
Brad/3 - I read that first Kim, it's completely online
kathyb1stia - Yeah, Guskey and Marzano wrote an assessment book, which we are using for the basis of our curriculum writing this summer.
Brad/3 - Marzano, I've heard of. What's the name of book?
Brad/3 - And your thrust?
kathyb1stia - Elliott Asp, from Douglass County, CO will be with us again to keep our group moving.
Kim/K/SCa - Of course.......you wouldn't actually go out and BUY it.............(cheep cheep cheep....do you hear my little chickens?)
Brad/3 - I'm thinking they're not like mine, Kim, definitely come from literate backgrounds
diane - i just received RWM, is it a quick read?
judy3ca - Brad, the rubrics my school distric developed are posted at this site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mosaicteachers/files/
Kim/K/SCa - very quick, diane
Brad/3 - Mouths to feed over here
Brad/3 - thanks, judy, I'll check them out
Kim/K/SCa - well, yeah.......... obviously.
Kim/K/SCa - how many kidlets Brad?
Brad/3 - I think it just thundered here
Brad/3 - 2
judy3ca - Would that be Bradlets, Kim?
Kim/K/SCa - mine are 17 and 20.......and I just had them
Kim/K/SCa - LOL, Judy......
Brad/3 - Veal Bradlets, if you please
judy3ca - No kidding, Kim. Mine are 24 and 17. Born yesterday.
Kim/K/SCa - Brad....did you say you finished WW also?
Brad/3 - Judy, which of the posts is it?
Brad/3 - I read WW about two years ago
Brad/3 - and again about a year ago
Brad/3 - and i'm thinking it's time to read it again
Kim/K/SCa - I had to read MOT twice........I am reading Mel Levine's new book new. A Mind at a Time. A bit drier........... I think.
judy3ca - Brad, look for the files that have the word 'rubrics' in them. I think it got split into three posts by the time I got done sending it in.
kathyb1stia - Brad, I will post the title, etc. on the chatboard, as I don't have it handy.
Brad/3 - does anyone else find themselves re-reading the really good ones, just to keep yourself steeped in the knowledge?
Kim/K/SCa - Yes, Brad!
judy3ca - I've read MOT many times. It's one of a few books I'll gladly reread.
Brad/3 - KIm, i began to read that one at the B and N last week. Very interesting proposal. What do you think?
Alta Rose / 1 - Yes, I do that with my 4Blocks books.
diane - i'm signed up for an intensive summer writing program...i think i get to choose some of my writing texts. i have ww; i think i will use that one. good?
kathyb1stia - Judy, I click on it but, you have to join Yahoo?
Brad/3 - me too ar
Kim/K/SCa - Well, just started it. 50 pages in.........? Lots of MOT connections! Really!
diane - i, too, have read mot several times...i just get so inspired
Brad/3 - Also ARt of teaching writing by Calkins, Diane
judy3ca - Oh, shoot, Kathy, I forgot about that. This is part of a group. Maybe you do have to join.
Kim/K/SCa - WW excellent, diane!!! Really.
diane - i have that one waiting as well, brad. also, creating writers
Brad/3 - No one here ever mentions ARt of teaching reading by Calkins, but it too is one I steep myself in every few months or so.
Kim/K/SCa - creating writers any good?
Brad/3 - Judy, I had just joined this week
Kim/K/SCa - You sound like a teabag Brad
Brad/3 - I find Calkins' students a little more realistic than some of these others
judy3ca - Diane, I LOVE Creating Writers. This is my next goal, sorting out assessment for writing. Have you seen the kits Spandel put out. I've been piloting one and just love it.
Brad/3 - <----just an old bag
Kim/K/SCa - I also have the one by Patricia Wolfe on order........Amazon delayed, as usual. Grrr.....
Brad/3 - give us more judy, what's in kits?
diane - lol, kim, i don't know yet...i like vicki spandel an awful lot, but i haven't read this one
Kim/K/SCa - Yes, I pull out Calkins a lot...........
diane - yes, judy, i have the third grade kit in my room this year.
Brad/3 - you like art of teaching reading, kim?
Kim/K/SCa - KITS? What KITS?
Brad/3 - Kits, Kim, Like Knight Rider
Kim/K/SCa - Yup, Brad....... I do. I need to pull that one out and actually go cover to cover this time.
diane - judy, i live up the street from the nwresd that puts out a lot of info about 6 traits. it's been in this area for a while...i love it
judy3ca - Brad, not much for $135, but I wheedled it out of our Lit Coach. Basically it's a box with a teacher's guide and student workbook (plus a couple of posters). What I like about the 24 lessons is that I can use them as in my writing workshop, but more traditional writing teachers could use them just as easily.
Brad/3 - I just dip, I actually talked about dipping in my class the other day, and my kids got a kick out of it, cause you know it's a slang word
Kim/K/SCa - i need to go to a 6traits workshop........must look that up
Brad/3 - what's in workbook?
Kim/K/SCa - I'm afraid to ask........what is "dip" in slang? Or do I not NEED to know?
diane - my principal is the tag coordinator for our district, so my classroom is down the hall from the most incredible professional resource library...ahhh...
Brad/3 - judy, does your school divide the traits into grade levels?
judy3ca - Diane, how cool! Next year will be my first dive into 6 Traits, but I LOVE Vicki Spandel.
kathyb1stia - We are Starting 6 traits for the 3rd time, and still we aren't very far...
Kim/K/SCa - oh don't TEASE, Diane...................
kathyb1stia - No workshops close by
Brad/3 - it's used as a slang word for just what I was talking about. How you can dip into nonfiction and not read it cover to cover. In conversation, it's like being nosy. "Are you dipping in our conversation?"
diane - my kids wrote haiku yesterday...their word choice was phenomenal...i know that has to do with 6 traits
Kim/K/SCa - okay, whew.........
judy3ca - Brad, nope. At the moment I'm the lone traits ranger. The district will probably trust us to use the traits as we see fit. However, I do hope they change the report card section on writing to reflect the 6 traits.
Brad/3 - As in, "You're all up in my Kool-Aid and do not know de flavor."
Brad/3 - judy, i will be lone ranger in my building as I would like to use it in my writer's workshop next year.
kathyb1stia - great example, Diane
Kim/K/SCa - i had a kid tell me today that his new pencil was "tight." I had to reflect for a moment.
judy3ca - I went to day one of training and will do 2 more in June.
Brad/3 - Since I will be in 2nd I was just thinking of concentrating on IDEAS and Organization, and maybe "dip" (lol) into Word Choice.
Brad/3 - Kim, daily occurence in my room, the latest is "salt"
Kim/K/SCa - is there a 6 traits book
judy3ca - Brad, you're changing grades???? Why limit yourself to a few traits?
diane - our state writing assessments are based on the 6 traits. we start them all early
kathyb1stia - I sure wish we had SOME kind of training around here for ANYTHING!
Kim/K/SCa - Because he has so few REDEEMING traits, Judy..............(haw haw haw...............hee hee hee......)
judy3ca - Kim, Creating Writers by Vicki Spandel. And she's writing a new one right now for primary grades.
judy3ca - Kim, Creating Writers by Vicki Spandel. And she's writing a new one right now for primary grades.
Brad/3 - I just would like to teach a few traits well, I'm not saying I won't dabble in others. But I really want to see growth in those two.
Kim/K/SCa - oooooohhhhhhhh.......I may have to put Dr. Mel down...........
diane - where are you kathy?
judy3ca - Oops!
kathyb1stia - Kim, the NWREL website is a good place to start
Kim/K/SCa - thanks kathy.
Brad/3 - Kim, you just have to latch onto this, It will provide you with so much more reading. LOL
Kim/K/SCa - "Is this heaven?" "No, it's Iowa."
kathyb1stia - There are several sites that have identified certain books with certain traits and a few lesson plans.
Brad/3 - I have a list of that site, Kathy, let me see if i can link
judy3ca - Ta da....I think Vicki Spandel is going to use some of my students' work in her next book. Wouldn't that be cool? Of course, they'll probably be 45 by the time it's published.
Kim/K/SCa - Yes and I NEEEEEEED more reading. You should see my nightstand.
diane - kim, try the nwrel's student friendly guide to the 6 traits. it's a great resource that really is "kid friendly"
Alta Rose / 1 - Cool, Judy!
Kim/K/SCa - OOOH Judy! How special........and we can say we KNOW you.
kathyb1stia - I am in SE Iowa, Diane. Where are you?
judy3ca - Thanks, Alta Rose.
diane - that's great judy!
Brad/3 - if I have kathy's site, how would I link it?
judy3ca - Kim, ROFLOL. No, I get to say I know someone who teaches college!
diane - i'm in oregon, outside of portland
diane - i'm in oregon, outside of portland
Kim/K/SCa - What happened to Barb? Iwent and dug out that book and everything.
judy3ca - Just cut and past it in the box....it'll come up hot.
kathyb1stia - www.nwrel.org
Alta Rose / 1 - Whenever I've gone to the nwrel website, I found lots of rubrics for 6traits, but couldn't find anything on how to teach them.
Brad/3 - i saved it in acrobat, how do i link it for kim
judy3ca - Oh, never mind--that's too complicated for my little techbrain.
Brad/3 - AR, plenty of sites out there for teaching, but not much for primary. go to ginny's site
Kim/K/SCa - I think I have it bookmarked..........not real meaningful for me before.
judy3ca - Ginny has some great 6 Traits stuff at her site.
kathyb1stia - I will post some links to lessons on the chatboard for you, AR and Kim
Alta Rose / 1 - Are there ideas for teaching on Ginny's site? I couldn't find them before, either.
Alta Rose / 1 - Thanks, Kathy!
judy3ca - I wish Mae were here....she likes 6 Traits.
Kim/K/SCa - thanks, kathy
Kim/K/SCa - Where is mae? And Jan? And Sharon? And Rudy?
Alta Rose / 1 - Do you focus on just a few traits for primary and then add to them in older grades?
judy3ca - I know Jan is working on a book with Ginny. I think their deadline is soon.
Kim/K/SCa - that's what I understand, Alta.......you start with one and then add as you go.......as kids develop competency?
kathyb1stia - Oh, Ginny's site, don't you have to join the KS ring?
Kim/K/SCa - They are writing a book? WOW!
Brad/3 - i just don't know how to link it, Kim, maybe i'll send it in email
Alta Rose / 1 - What is their book about?
Brad/3 - not necessarily kim. that's just what many schools have done
judy3ca - I don't understand how you can separate the traits. Aren't they all present in all writing? There are very simple rubrics in Creating Writers for beginning writers.
kathyb1stia - WE are focusing on most of the traits, except conventions and presentation.
diane - i agree, judy, we work on all of the traits
Brad/3 - judy, you can't really separate the traits just like you can't separate MOT strategies, but I do think you can concentrate on one, n'est-ce pas?
Kim/K/SCa - well, for example....isn't there a trait for "voice." how would that apply to K?
Brad/3 - K's have the most voice of all KIm
kathyb1stia - Perhaps, to just get us warmed up, until they are ready to dictate what we should REALLY be doing.
Kim/K/SCa - they are LOUD that is for sure.........LOL
Brad/3 - If you can tell someone's writing without having a name on the paper, THAT'S VOICE
judy3ca - Kinders use all kinds of voice in their writing, don't they? If they can't write, they can hear examples of voice (consider Click, Clack, Moo) and tell or draw their story.
diane - sadly, brad, today i could identify a nameless paper due to lack of voice...
Brad/3 - I have some stuff I just go on assessing picture writing before kids can actually spell and write words that help assess 6 traits
Alta Rose / 1 - Where I live, the grade 3's write provincial tests and the writing portion asks them to write a story. So here we've been focusing on story-writing the most. Can someone explain "Voice" to me?
Brad/3 - did that make sense/
Brad/3 - brb, ar
judy3ca - Well, isn't voice the unique way a writer expresses himself? The 'me' in the piece?
Kim/K/SCa - yes.......like you can always "tell" a Cynthia Rylant piece? Her voice is so unique.
Brad/3 - I just went outside and it is absolutely POURING!!!
judy3ca - I like to read bits of text to my kids--at this point in the year they can often guess an writer (professional or student).
Kim/K/SCa - Sheesh, Brad! It is windy here but quite temperate. No rain.
Alta Rose / 1 - Wow--It sounds like a really abstract concept to get across? How do you explain it to little guys?
judy3ca - Alta, you read them books that are good examples of voice.
kathyb1stia - I love this discussion on 6traits, but I think I will have to look for more discussion on the chatboard. I am getting tired. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND, everyone!
Brad/3 - For Voice, you listen for an energy or mood present, an awareness of writing for audience, moments of "sparkle," taking risks, point of view.
Kim/K/SCa - Today I was reading "A House is a House For Me." All of the sudden they SURGED on me and started making up their own! "A lightbulb is a house for 'lectricity! A head is a house for a brain! A cup is a house for a soda!" It was amazing. All those connections. We have been talking about "connections" a lot lately.
diane - kathy, i'm with youl...i'm feeling my eyelids drooping!
Alta Rose / 1 - But I don't think I can identify examples of voice myself.
judy3ca - Oh, Kim, that's exceptional!
Brad/3 - If an author really can make you see and feel things, that is voice
Kim/K/SCa - yes you can, alta rose............ it is just being called something else....you know it when you hear it.
Alta Rose / 1 - Somebody mentioned "Click Clack Moo." I know that book. What is the voice in that one?
Brad/3 - If the story/pic makes you want to cry, laugh, that is voic4e
Kim/K/SCa - A real favorite of mine.....I just LOVE CLick Clack Moo.
Brad/3 - the humor in that is the voice. So are the pictures
Brad/3 - I just recently saw sequel to Click Clack MOO and would've known it was by same author/illustrator just by pic.
Kim/K/SCa - It is a kind of "smart aleck" voice............ conspiratorial.......telling this story, I kind of picture "Jack Webb"...............
J-mee - hey everyone![]()
judy3ca - Oh, thanks, Brad, another book to buy...is it good?
Brad/3 - There should be a sense of uniqueness and playfulness. Here's something from my daughter's report
Brad/3 - Not as deep as Click Clack Moo, judy
Kim/K/SCa - I tell my Ed 500 students that this is an excellent text to read to your older kids if you are going to study trade unions...........
Kim/K/SCa - Hi j-mee
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi J-mee!
Brad/3 - Daughter's report, "Let me tell you about Jupiter." or "Did you know it had a Great Red Spot?" This girl clearly has voice in writing. She is aware of audience.
judy3ca - Yawning, good night everyone. Thanks!
Brad/3 - gnite judy
Kim/K/SCa - g'night Judy
Brad/3 - it's also good i would think with uppers, for explaining why slaves were not allowed to read and write
Alta Rose / 1 - We are studying Outer Space right now, Brad, and loving it!
Brad/3 - we have too, ar
Alta Rose / 1 - It sounds like there are so many examples of voice!
Kim/K/SCa - you have to build a bit of background knowledge......many kids don't know what a typewriter is............
Brad/3 - i always loved outer space when i was young. it was my favorite part of science
Brad/3 - She also says, "And could you guess it was named for a God?" LOL, it was kind've funny to read.
Alta Rose / 1 - It's a great unit for this time of year, when everyone is getting tired.
Brad/3 - That's my daughter--Voice
Kim/K/SCa - LOL Brad......how old?
Brad/3 - (and sometimes it talks back)
Brad/3 - 10
Alta Rose / 1 - lol, Brad!
Alta Rose / 1 - Mine is 11-I hear you!
Brad/3 - I've been telling her lately, "You're laying the groundwork now for when you want to go out with Alyssa to the mall when you're a teenager." LOL
Alta Rose / 1 - How many examples of voice are there? I'm really struggling with this concept!
Kim/K/SCa - I saw the sequel at Barnes and Noble, Brad................I refrained from buying. I did peeek.......
Brad/3 - "You have to prove NOW we can trust you if you want to do things, blah, blah, blah, whatever Brad, get over yourself, go suck a dishtowel or something"
Brad/3 - It's cute Kim, but no great shakes like the first. I thought the first worked on all levels>
Alta Rose / 1 - Amazing Brad--I had the same conversation with mine tonight!
Kim/K/SCa - I would say, A.R., that every author has a somewhat unique voice. It is like the TONE of the book, the choice of words, the way the ideas are expressed. You detect personality
Brad/3 - exactly kim
Alta Rose / 1 - It's so abstract for me!
Brad/3 - who was it that had all famous authors like Stephen King, Dr. Seuss, and such write the same story but in their own unique voices. Have you heard of this project?
Kim/K/SCa - Like..........you can always TELL a Dr. Seuss book, a Cynthia Rylant book, a Mercer Mayer book..........?
Alta Rose / 1 - If I could get ahold of a list of books with good examples, maybe I'd start to get it.
Alta Rose / 1 - OK, it's starting to come.........
Brad/3 - Hold on, and I'll give you some
Kim/K/SCa - Okay. If you have been visiting the chatboard a lot, sometimes you can just TELL who has written a certain post. Let's say you don't even read the name of the poster. You can tell a "roger " post and a "randy ak" post, right?
Alta Rose / 1 - Right.
Kim/K/SCa - and the "snarly" posts........... "doh" "pope gregory" "david"
Brad/3 - can you tell a kim post
Alta Rose / 1 - I'm thinking now of authors like Eric Carle and Robert Munsch. I think I'm starting to get it!
Kim/K/SCa - you can tell a "jan" and a "ginny" because they have a certain.............voice. right?
Brad/3 - ok, some books, "Alexander, who used to be rich last sunday." "Stinky Cheese Man" (my fave book)
Kim/K/SCa - yes.......eric carle very very simple language, robert munsch sort of simple but sing-songy
Alta Rose / 1 - Right! I think I understand now. Examples always help!
Brad/3 - "Miss Rumphius"
Brad/3 - Alta Rose, if you email me, I'll send you this 6 trait pic book list
Kim/K/SCa - yes.....the alexander books sound just like...........judith viorst immitating her son
Brad/3 - AR, where do you tteach?
Alta Rose / 1 - Now, is the idea that after introducing kids to different kinds of voice, that you start to help them develop their own voice?
Alta Rose / 1 - Thanks, Brad!
Kim/K/SCa - yes........ i think so.
Brad/3 - To me, the voice is there already, it's just seeing it doesn't get lost, You shouldn't have to worry about that in first
Alta Rose / 1 - I teach in Alberta, Canada. (Thus the handle, Alta Rose)
Kim/K/SCa - because you are using examples of good literature to teach them how to write
Kim/K/SCa - showing them the "craft" or the author's "way with words."
Brad/3 - Starting in third, they begin to worry about people pleasing and lose their voice. Everything starts to sound dry and encyclopedic, especially if they haven't had good writing instruction (which mine hadn't)
Brad/3 - I have one girl who completely writes in her dialect, but I think it gives the piece voice, so I don't correct it a great deal.
Brad/3 - (although I'm sure purists would freak)
Kim/K/SCa - that was the sound you just heard........the purists freaking..........
Alta Rose / 1 - I would think that a lot of their voice would be shown naturally. LIke how my son's sense of humour (Gr. 3) comes through in his story-writing.
Kim/K/SCa - Was Providence on tonight?
Brad/3 - well i'm glad i managed to make them freak at least once this week. I was beginning to worry
Alta Rose / 1 - Don't know.
Brad/3 - (Talk about voice)
Alta Rose / 1 - Lol, Brad!
Brad/3 - Providence--The Freak out
Brad/3 - Why do they always title their ep's like that?
Kim/K/SCa - I don't think I caught it last week.........one of the only shows i watch anymore..........besides antiques roadshow
Brad/3 - I think it is natural for children, AR, just see they don't lose it
Brad/3 - talk about purists, kim
Brad/3 - They actually made one million like it so it's only worth about forty dollars
Alta Rose / 1 - I'll certainly recognize it now! I'm looping to Gr. 2 next year, and we do a lot of story-writing!
Brad/3 - I found it at a garage sale. "Well it's worth over 3000 dollars. but this little chip on the left means it's only worth about 35 dolllars."
Kim/K/SCa - LOL ..............
Brad/3 - "See this signature on the back?" "(with hope in her voice) Yes." "Well, she signed everything she ever did. So that means it's worth about 25 dollars if you're lucky"
Kim/K/SCa - Have you read Wondrous Words Alta Rose"
Kim/K/SCa - ?
Alta Rose / 1 - No, I haven't. It's on the list!
Brad/3 - IS that like Chicken a la King (Wondrous Words Alta Rose?)
Kim/K/SCa - sorry....the question mark got cut off....
Alta Rose / 1 - lol!
Kim/K/SCa - Wondrous Words Al Ta Rose
Brad/3 - my son has now fallen asleep on the couch
Kim/K/SCa - I think the idea of voice will make much more sense after you read this book . YOU MUST READ IT. It fits nicely with MOT
Brad/3 - Kim, i was thinking the other day, we just have to meet, when are you coming to ohio?
Brad/3 - Kim, i was thinking the other day, we just have to meet, when are you coming to ohio?LOL
Kim/K/SCa - My son is driving around with his buddies. No fewer than 6 young ladies have called the house looking for him
Brad/3 - Obviously it was so nice i thought it twice
Brad/3 - Kim is raising a he-whore
Kim/K/SCa - I WISH he were asleep on the couch. Count your blessings Brad
Brad/3 - Is he a senior
Brad/3 - (he musta laid that groundwork, eh, AR?)
Kim/K/SCa - You are NOT kidding Brad. He is quite the ladies' man
Kim/K/SCa - He will be a senior....class of '03
Brad/3 - seriously?
Brad/3 - is he a gentleman?
Brad/3 - (look who i'm asking)
Alta Rose / 1 - Lol!
Kim/K/SCa - He is a great kid. Good student, great with cars, helpful and respectful.........has horrible taste in music although he is developing a new affinity for classic rock................ i think he is a gentleman
Brad/3 - <---beginning to crave chicken a la king
Kim/K/SCa - I would love to see Ohio, Brad
Brad/3 - what does he listen to?
Brad/3 - It's high in the middle and round on both sides
Kim/K/SCa - lately......anything with acoustic guitar. dug out my eagles cds and lots of clapton.
Alta Rose / 1 - Well, I think I'm going to call it a night. Thanks for the "voice" lessons, you guys!
Brad/3 - I've seen CA Kim
Kim/K/SCa - See you next week Alta
Brad/3 - AR, don't go. we're just warming up. LOL
Kim/K/SCa - he also likes eminem...........ye gawds...................
Brad/3 - AR's like Rudy, she can't hang. LOL
Alta Rose / 1 - Night!
Alta Rose / 1 - Lol! Thanks for the laughs, too!
Brad/3 - I find Eminem to be a talented interesting perspective on life
Kim/K/SCa - yes............well put
Brad/3 - I also find him rude abrasive and just a tad vulgar
Kim/K/SCa - Dustin and I discuss music a lot.
Brad/3 - and a wigger to boot
Brad/3 - You know Dustin Hoffman?
Kim/K/SCa - HA....very funny.
Kim/K/SCa - Dusty is my son.........Danny is the older one.
Brad/3 - Personally I find Britney Spears very
Kim/K/SCa - very.............YOUNG?
Brad/3 - you thought i would say well-endowed, didn't you?
Kim/K/SCa - very...........underdressed?
Brad/3 - she certainly has voice
Brad/3 - Danny is ladies man?
Kim/K/SCa - yes...........she does.......but little talent
Kim/K/SCa - NO..Danny is NOT the ladies man. Danny is very quiet and reticent. Heading for CSU Chico. Criminal justice major
Brad/3 - or Dustin?
Kim/K/SCa - Dustin, however............SO many I lose track.
Brad/3 - and he's 14.
Kim/K/SCa - no.........17.
Brad/3 - who's 14?
Kim/K/SCa - Dusty is 17 and a senior next year. Danny is 20 and a jr. next year in college
Brad/3 - I thought you said one's 14
Kim/K/SCa - judy has a 14 yr old
Brad/3 - oh
Brad/3 - Sandra's back
Brad/3 - lurking
Kim/K/SCa - Hi Sandra!
Brad/3 - No more, Kim?
Kim/K/SCa - we sorta got off the subject.............NO MORE Brad.
Kim/K/SCa - I am telling Sandra that we got off the subject.
Brad/3 - Cause I have a a 4 and 10 year old you can have
Kim/K/SCa - I am telling you NO MORE kids for me.
Brad/3 - very cheap, (and if I sign them their value is guaranteed not to increase)
Kim/K/SCa - Yikes, Brad.............. I been there and DONE that.
Brad/3 - but you haven't had a girl yet
Kim/K/SCa - Then don't SIGN them................whatever you do
Brad/3 - think of the treasure she'll provide you
Kim/K/SCa - (snorting rudely here)
Brad/3 - you can shop for shoes together
Kim/K/SCa - that is simply a pleasure in life I willhave to miss.......................(NOT)
Kim/K/SCa - i can't stand shoppping unless i am in a bookstore.........so i would be a poor role model
Brad/3 - LOL, Kim, I can't stand shopping unless I have money
Brad/3 - she's a good little reader
Kim/K/SCa - Dustin likes to go to the bookstore to read car mags and be a babe magnet........
Brad/3 - LOL, my son likes them to "play train"
Kim/K/SCa - so we do this mother and son thing there...............
Kim/K/SCa - last week he got really upset. this little girl asked him to read her a story. he was all set to do it and her parents came UNGLUED at her and started screaming at her about "bothering" him...................
Kim/K/SCa - he said he didn't mind and she started to cry. ..... it really shook him up.
Brad/3 - parents are way too uptight these days (and somehow too loose at the same time)
Brad/3 - i do have some good news
Kim/K/SCa - yeah................ i mean, she came right up to him and started talking............he talked right back to her..........got ready to read the book and BAM these idiots make fools out of themselves.................
Brad/3 - they are planning on building a new B&N two highway exits down from me.
Kim/K/SCa - i was at the other end of the store or my claws mighta come out.........................
Brad/3 - It's like an alcoholic in a bar, spouse says
Kim/K/SCa - That is good neews Brad!
Kim/K/SCa - She is right! Danger! Danger!
Kim/K/SCa - You have the educator discount card, right?
Brad/3 - Yes, and the cafe card to boot
Brad/3 - You can't have a book without a cup of joe i always say
Kim/K/SCa - ((((mmmmmmmmmmm...cafe mocha..)))))))))
Kim/K/SCa - (((doing the Homer drool)))
Brad/3 - but I just hate when old men and their dusty civil war books sit down in my big comfy chairs and I"m left with those hard wooden benches
Kim/K/SCa - ...the noive!...
Brad/3 - so you began Mind at Time. Did you see Oprah show?
Kim/K/SCa - you can go into the kids section...but inevitably some dimwit parent torks you off so you can't enjoy reading in there...........
Kim/K/SCa - No..... was he on her show?
Brad/3 - I didn't see show either. Wanted to see if you did.
Kim/K/SCa - well NO....gotta WORK...........dud
Kim/K/SCa - I mean duh
Brad/3 - Yes, there's always some dimwit, "Michael, I said C'mon, we still have to go to gymanstics. . ." "Michael, there will be a time-out. . ."
Brad/3 - "Michael. . ."
Kim/K/SCa - "michael don't RIP the books"
Brad/3 - Inevitably, Michael will only leave if he gets some stuffed animal or something.
Brad/3 - Courtesy of his overindulgent parents
Kim/K/SCa - "now michael honey i told you ten minutes ago we have to leave. just pick out ONE more..............NO! you can't have the train set..............."
Brad/3 - LOL, that's it
Kim/K/SCa - "no i am not buying you harry potter...................how about this franklin book?
Brad/3 - the Mind book seemed to be very clinical and theoretical. Would love to see a more practical application of his strategy without paying the big bucks.
Kim/K/SCa - "sweetie come on now michael daddy is waiting for us................"
Kim/K/SCa - Yes....kinda dry.
Brad/3 - but an interesting theory nonetheless I bookmarked the website
Kim/K/SCa - there is a website? a theory?
Brad/3 - allkindsofminds.com
Kim/K/SCa - oh dear...............i better read some more........................cool thanks
Brad/3 - loads of info very similar to book some audio clips too
Brad/3 - it was really intriguing to me. I'm finding myself becoming interested in remediation
Kim/K/SCa - yes............that is what happened to me.
Brad/3 - Not that I would choose that area to work in, but It's valuable in mainstream room too
Kim/K/SCa - i am thinking more and more that remediation is something that has to be done in the classroom
Brad/3 - I find that these "new" ways of teaching all come from gifted/talented or sped programs. Do you?
Kim/K/SCa - to avoid fragmenting the curriculum.................yes..............
Brad/3 - Occasionally I dream I work in building like MOT, where teachers care. Where do they find these people and how do they get them all into one building
Kim/K/SCa - YES...........good thinking cuz you are not alone
Brad/3 - I want someone to write a book straight up, that says, "Look, this is us, warts and all, no pretty pictures, and herre's what we did and what it took to get there."
Kim/K/SCa - I mean get a LOAD out of Debbie Miller's KIDS!!!
Brad/3 - Okay, I go to a district meeting this week and apparently a cadre had traveled to DeKalb Cty. in Ga.
Kim/K/SCa - I will have firsties next year. I have been warned that they are very low. I want to see what I can do.......................
Brad/3 - They asked a first grader what the parts of the story he was reading was, and he said, "Oh, you mean the elements."
Kim/K/SCa - but first, i need tableclothes
Brad/3 - And apparently they could all articulate the objectives and could define a narrative.
Kim/K/SCa - ((snorting sound again)) the elements?
Brad/3 - All very lofty goals but are these empty recitations with nothing to back them up?
Kim/K/SCa - You know, I suppose..............if they arrive well-prepared....................
Brad/3 - And this district supposedly has same economic background we do
Kim/K/SCa - are they thinking abou their thinking or are they spouting jargon?
Brad/3 - Something smells rotten in Denmark
Kim/K/SCa - ...the cheese is OLD and moldy............
Brad/3 - Doesn't Calkins caution against that? See, that's why I like her book so much.
Kim/K/SCa - ...which one?
Brad/3 - Calkins' students all seem more real and she's much more likely to talk about childrren off-task or not getting it
Brad/3 - Art of Reading
Kim/K/SCa - I think i will pull that one out for a good READ..............
Kim/K/SCa - excellent Freire quote in there..
Brad/3 - Have you read it or just "dipped" LOL
Kim/K/SCa - dipped lots of places
Brad/3 - I've done it all with that book
Kim/K/SCa - to flesh out my information ......vocabulary, read aloud,, leveling books.....
Brad/3 - We had the magazine file bookscases this year
Brad/3 - flesh out infor?
Kim/K/SCa - i bought it at a bad time.............
Brad/3 - hadn't you seen video series with reading with meaning or somehting
Kim/K/SCa - oh, when i prepare my "lecture" for Ed 500 I get information from a variety of sources.....to deepen my own unerstanding
Brad/3 - what is the title of this class
Kim/K/SCa - you know, to hear somebody else say the same thing but in different words.....................
Kim/K/SCa - no videos ..........."Lieracy in the 21st century" It is the "teaching reading" class for credeential candidates
Brad/3 - what do you think of the new crop?
Kim/K/SCa - man ...........my computer is typing in jags.........I can't get the letters right
Kim/K/SCa - that giant scraping sound you hear is CA scraping the bottom of the barrel. Scary
Kim/K/SCa - lazy, unmotivated, uninterested, no connection, no passion.................for the most part
Brad/3 - a teacher at my grade level (you know the grade level not teaching the appropriate curriculum) has a student teacher who is just the pits.
Brad/3 - I can't stand people who go into it thinking it's eaasy and summers off
Kim/K/SCa - if they don't have it they don't have it......................
Brad/3 - I think it's some of the most challenging work going, and it's hard to get anyone not in it to understand that
Brad/3 - but why go into it if you don't have it?
Kim/K/SCa - sometimes i eel like it is a dog and pony show.............to keep them interested. a couple of them will be fine..............
Brad/3 - are you getting them toward the end, when many have been weeded?
Kim/K/SCa - like the one i talked about tonight. she can't write on a professional level....she isn't the sharpest pencil in the box............but she is getting it
Kim/K/SCa - the problem brad is that there is very little WEEDING
Kim/K/SCa - $$$$
Brad/3 - It frightens me because many of the things we learn in university like coop learning, MOT, writer's workshop, math activities, require good classroom management and great skill. ANd since that's the toughest thing for new teachers, many just fall back into the habit of marching through the book page by page or story by story. It's sad
Brad/3 - and there's no support
Kim/K/SCa - we weeded a couple last term..........one left teaching altogether, thank goodness...........one will have to retake the class. oh goody.
Brad/3 - and there's the @#$% tests to put some more fear into you. OUr test scores just came back, adn the rumor is they're not very good
Kim/K/SCa - yes............my new district has a BITSA program..............mentoring
Brad/3 - I'm writing the new math curriculum for primary level in our district and I was trying to tell all the other (older) people in my meeting that the new standards require a new way of thinking
Kim/K/SCa - new teachers get extra budget money and are paid to go to the meetings..........mentors come in and monitor and help...........
Kim/K/SCa - yes................
Brad/3 - You can't just teach with a textbook, you have to start with the indicator or skill and then match the activity to it.
Brad/3 - so were we kim, but it was a joke
Brad/3 - But it's difficult to get people to conform to that mentality of beginning with the skill . They just think, oh @#$% it's may and i'm only on page 225
Kim/K/SCa - well..my friend Becky was pleased...but this is a small district
Brad/3 - Maybe it's nicer in your district. The meetings were nice (they provided eats) but the mentoring was a joke
Kim/K/SCa - 3 schools
Brad/3 - And I liked my mentor, it's just finding the time
Brad/3 - I was not assigned mentor until Feb.
Kim/K/SCa - that is the danger with "district" programs
Brad/3 - so is it like that where you're at (going)? Oh @#$% it's may and i'm only on 223
Brad/3 - oh @#$% it's may and we haven't even got to division with remainders
Kim/K/SCa - well...........i can't say for sure. in my current district, there is not close monitoring....new one........who knows? I am not wild about Saxon and this what they have
Brad/3 - in new district?
Kim/K/SCa - i hate scripted stuff....my hope is that i can look at goals and objectives and get there somehow, my way...............
Brad/3 - yuk, I shouldn't say that, I honestly have never seen program but I know it's very traditional
Kim/K/SCa - complaint is universal though
Brad/3 - I enjoy the investigations series. I found it in a closet and am going to try and use that next year.
Brad/3 - used some this year. enjoy it and kids do too (I think) but rough to implement with kids not used ot
Brad/3 - used some this year. enjoy it and kids do too (I think) but rough to implement with kids not used otto
Kim/K/SCa - my kids scored very well on the math portion........and I hardly followed the stupid workbooks.............hee hee hee......................i am going to hagve to sneak them home to destry them
Brad/3 - I'm hoping if I get them in 2nd pretty early and teach this way, they'll be used to
Brad/3 - hee, hee, I love it. I'm interested in seeing my kids math scores
Kim/K/SCa - I have heard good things about Investigations
Brad/3 - As I looked over shoulder, seemed to be doing pretty well on Terra Nova
Kim/K/SCa - Do you use AIMS?
Brad/3 - I don't have any materials, but what I see I like
Brad/3 - what is your math series?
Kim/K/SCa - Houghton Mifflin............yawn
Brad/3 - we have harcourt. Houghton mifflin is reading series
Kim/K/SCa - I prefer Math Their Way, Box it and Bag it..................
Brad/3 - I love Box it Bag it. Does that go higher than 2nd?
Brad/3 - If you like those, you would probably like Investigations
Kim/K/SCa - I don't think so..................
Brad/3 - Have you read Constance Kamii
Kim/K/SCa - Yes
Brad/3 - she is good, i like her stuff
Kim/K/SCa - I have heard of her............i kind of went off on a reading tangent......
Brad/3 - I'm always reading something professional and not always literacy
Kim/K/SCa - Did you read the article I sent................kinda long....
Brad/3 - If i get the chance to team with another 2nd grade teacher next year, I will probably take math (she hates it), so I'm reading up a lot on math
Brad/3 - Kim, I absolutely loved the article and was hoping there were more
Kim/K/SCa - www.ciera.org
Brad/3 - I want to team next year for behavioral reasons, but again, I want to do all subjects, I'm interested in taking another stab at literacy
Kim/K/SCa - www.readingonline.org
Kim/K/SCa - lots of excellent, FREE artciles
Brad/3 - anything Marilyn 'burns is awesome for math. Are you going to a first next yr.
Kim/K/SCa - have ink cartridge, will read
Brad/3 - LOL
Kim/K/SCa - Yes, Marilyn Burns is excellent....K-1 combo
Kim/K/SCa - Ks leave at lunch..........
Brad/3 - she has a new series on teaching arithmetic that is just excellent. I bought the introductory multiplication for 3rd this year, and my kids really liked it.
Kim/K/SCa - new territory for me. always taught K .................did a remedial reading 2nd grade hated it
Brad/3 - why
Kim/K/SCa - after school program, very difficult kids, little support, no help.........................
Brad/3 - oh
Brad/3 - question about remediaton
Kim/K/SCa - no motivation, no interest..they struggle FOR A REASON
Brad/3 - in designing this curriculum guide, we have to come up with reteaching strategies. . .
Brad/3 - but, to me, in the math series Harcourt, the reteaching strategies are "more of the same"
Brad/3 - to the others on my curriculum, the reteaching stratetgies are more hands-on, but. . .
Kim/K/SCa - yes..........you go back and reteach..........................more time, more practice..............differentiated instruction
Kim/K/SCa - hands on is the key for math, i think
Brad/3 - to me, those are the strategies I start with because that's what our active inner city kids need.
Brad/3 - So if a kid doesn't get it, what do you do?
Kim/K/SCa - LOL Brad...................we graphed pennies, sorted pennies, flipped pennies, did penny rubbings, drops of water on pennies, massed pennies..............and STILL
Brad/3 - The re-teach strategies are basically, "Let me explain this again THE EXACT SAME WAY, and then you can do MORE PRACTICE." This is not reteaching, This is insanity--doing the same thing over again and expecting different results
Kim/K/SCa - several of my kids circled the DIME on the test..
Kim/K/SCa - you start from where they are............like in reading..............lots of hands on, tactile practice...............
Brad/3 - I know some never will, when is education going to admit that TSW (the student will ) should actually be WHTSW (we hope the student will
Brad/3 - see that's why I like the investigations series and the "new math" standards. They build more on the schema the kids come in with. Before (if) you teach the algorithm, the kids have their own strategies. . . it's all very MOT in a way.
Kim/K/SCa - some of them are not "wired" for the concept.............so you need to find another approach.........some are not developmentally ready to learn it yet...........if you do a calendar each day you can practice and reteach on a daily basis..........money, time, patterns, seqauencing.
Brad/3 - Did you read the PEBC document explaining how the MOT strategies work in other contents?
Brad/3 - I'm going to do Every Day Counts next year (something else I found in a closet)
Kim/K/SCa - the foundations....have them tally attendance...........come up with different ways.............
Kim/K/SCa - no
Brad/3 - As soon as I figure out, well, I know your email, I can just attach, remind me.
Kim/K/SCa - your closet sounds like a treasure trove
Brad/3 - exactly, kim, this closet. Why doesn't someone catalog this crap and make it available to new teachers or those in the district instead of saying, "See if they have that in the resource room"
Kim/K/SCa - i am going to be learning with my kids this year............kinda excited
Brad/3 - how are you setting up literacy?
Kim/K/SCa - but discovery learning is so powerful, brad
Kim/K/SCa - mo' of the same............balanced program.................
Kim/K/SCa - immerse them
Kim/K/SCa - dunk them
Brad/3 - LOL< Kim, some of us don't have time to make those types of discoveries in a large district like mine. I'll give you a hundred dollars, I could find enough to fill up my classroom library in one of the buildings they closed last year
Kim/K/SCa - dunk themno dipping
Kim/K/SCa - dunk them no dipping
Brad/3 - I really can't wait to go full stteam on my 4b next year
Kim/K/SCa - (((homer drool)))))4b
Brad/3 - I'm hoping if one of us monitors behavior, the other can do the conferencing
Brad/3 - and then maybe if behavior chills out, we can both conference and do twice as fast
Brad/3 - ((((conferencing))))
Brad/3 - LOL, hi karla
Kim/K/SCa - hi karla
Karla - Hello! I am in shock. I did not expect anyone to still be here.
Brad/3 - LOL< we are so dedicated
Kim/K/SCa - well.....i am falling asleep and brad keeps shaking me awake
Brad/3 - so you were hoping to chat with yourself were you?
Karla - to say the least
Brad/3 - <------night owl
Karla - What was the hot topic tonight?
Brad/3 - my son is such a wierdo
Karla - how old?
Brad/3 - (((homer drool)))) hot pockets
Kim/K/SCa - ,,,,<<<not me.......yawn
Kim/K/SCa - did he wake up
Brad/3 - no, he's laying face down with a pillow on top of him in his little Clifford underwears
Kim/K/SCa - MOT, WW, RWM, and .... "voice" 6 traits
Brad/3 - i think he will be the ladies man too
Karla - Sounds like I missed a good one.
Kim/K/SCa - How cute..........i remember clifford underwear................sigh
Brad/3 - I asked him if I could wear his Clifford underwear and he said, "no, my butt's too big."
Karla - Okay...it is late. What is RWM?
Kim/K/SCa - it was good, karla.......Reading With Meaning
Karla - Now I remember...Debbie Miller?
Kim/K/SCa - by Debbie Miller,.....from MOT?
Brad/3 - Being in second, kim or karla, when do you think it would be appropriate to intro reciprocal teaching?
Kim/K/SCa - did you read it?
Karla - Do you think a 6th grade teacher can extract anything useful out of RWM?
Brad/3 - yes, kim, (geez)
Karla - Kim...no I have not
Brad/3 - definitely karla
Kim/K/SCa - yikes, brad..............that is kinda deep
Brad/3 - I think these strategies are not grade specific, don't you kim
Brad/3 - ya' think?
Brad/3 - not even for the end of 2nd. They have them do it in soar to success at the beginning of 3rd
Kim/K/SCa - Yes I think you can find lots of good stuff there, karla...................I wasn't ASKING you brad I was asking Karla
Kim/K/SCa - so don't GEEZ me
Karla - Because I am a teacher (you know how the paycheck goes) I have resorted to my library for all of my reading pleasures. I have picked up over 40 books for "must read" this summer. I just received WW the other day. I have not been able to locate RWM.
Brad/3 - ((((homer drool)))) swiss geez
Kim/K/SCa - The strategies are well-explained............you just might use different literature.
Brad/3 - it is online kim www.stenhouse.com
Kim/K/SCa - RWM on line, karla if you can stand to read that way
Brad/3 - i mean, karla
Brad/3 - I can stand anything if it saves me 30 bucks
Karla - Brad...Are you talking to me??? Do you mean the RWM book?
Karla - gotcha
Brad/3 - yes
Kim/K/SCa - i personally can only read for so long at the computer...........
Karla - I ahve not tried to read one online yet. Do you take notes while you read?
Brad/3 - i've trained myself. there's just too much good reading for free on this information superhighway
Brad/3 - I have taken notes karla. In fact, I have some in front of me on types of scaffolding
Kim/K/SCa - you are just cheap brad..............lol
Karla - Me, too Brad!
Brad/3 - <------if coal were in his wallet, it'd be a diamond in two weeks
Kim/K/SCa - it is hard to underline text on the comptuer screen..............lol
Karla - The highlighter doesn't work well either.
Brad/3 - yes, i notice you're a fan of the underline, kim
Kim/K/SCa - i want to touch it and hold it..............smell it...............write all over it
Karla - Kim...I couldn't agree more.
Kim/K/SCa - sorry brad...............it is true
Brad/3 - Smell it??? I love it. My wife cracks up because that's one of the first things I do when I buy a book.
Brad/3 - I love the ones that smell like a new deck of cards
Karla - I don't think I go that far.
Kim/K/SCa - YES...........smell the ink and the paper..............((((homer drool)))
Brad/3 - I fan the pages and breathe deeply. It's very zen. LIke yoga
Karla - Okay you two...settle down.
Brad/3 - (((((((homer drool))))) strawberry yoga
Brad/3 - Kim, do your sons share your sense of humor (or love of reading for that matter?)
Kim/K/SCa - when i am underlining i don't consider a future reader of the book....................sorry
Brad/3 - Like i said, I loved getting your book with your underlines
Kim/K/SCa - they are not avid readers.............alas.
Kim/K/SCa - but hope does spring eternal
Kim/K/SCa - they tend to be quite funny, when in context..............
Kim/K/SCa - we quote movie lines and simpson lines a lot............crack ourselves up
Kim/K/SCa - sax a ma phone..............
Kim/K/SCa - Well it is almost 11:00 at night, and YES, i finally do know where my son is.....................
Brad/3 - sorry, my son woke up asking for Pepsi
Kim/K/SCa - my dogs are barking so the prodigal son returns........................i think.......
Brad/3 - HE wouldn't have anything else. No water, juice. He even started to cry
Brad/3 - WIERDO
Kim/K/SCa - half asleep................like father like son
Brad/3 - now this means I'm gonna have to stay up and finish this @#$% Pepsi
Kim/K/SCa - Karla?
Brad/3 - Yo, karla?
Karla - Still here...just dazing. It is almost 1 here.
Brad/3 - almost 2 here
Karla - Where are you Brad?
Brad/3 - <----------wierdo
Brad/3 - Ohio
Karla - You are just a jump away then.
Brad/3 - Kim, are you married?
Brad/3 - where are you karla
Kim/K/SCa - I hear you.................I am thinking of hitting the sack.............but kids are not home yet.. ...danny didn't leave a note which is unusual..............dustin went out "for a little bit" at 6:45
Kim/K/SCa - I hear you.................I am thinking of hitting the sack.............but kids are not home yet.. ...danny didn't leave a note which is unusual..............dustin went out "for a little bit" at 6:45
Karla - I am nestled in the cornfields of Illinois!
Brad/3 - okay, wherabouts?
Kim/K/SCa - sorrry didn't mean to repeat myself...............typing is a chore right now. YES, married 23 years
Karla - central...south of I-80...Decatur
Brad/3 - is your husband big and burly, watches NASCAR
Karla - Where in Ohio for you? Kim...where in Southern Cal for you?
Kim/K/SCa - lol................no he sells fishing tackle and BOWLS, LOL
Brad/3 - Ohio, Middletown, aptly named because it is in middle of Dayton and Cincinnati
Karla - Been there Brad!
Kim/K/SCa - I am 90 miles north of L.A.............ner Edwards AFB where the shuttle lands?
Brad/3 - people always say so how's farm country. Um, not this part of OHio
Karla - Attended several swim meets at University of Ohio.
Brad/3 - University of Ohio is quite some distance from here (2, 3 hrs)
Kim/K/SCa - I went to Chicago once. The only time I ever left CA................very flat
Karla - Oops...I meant U of Miami.
Karla - I told you it was late.
Brad/3 - Kim, you need to get out more
Brad/3 - Actually Miami has branch here in Middletown
Karla - We were always at the Natatorium in Oxford.
Brad/3 - main campus is about 45 minutes away in Oxford
Kim/K/SCa - The big story here is the stupid Lakers. Many think that KOBE was poisoned by room service in Sacramento
Karla - Often, we have had to look for accomodations in your town because Oxford has so few.
Brad/3 - I've probably been through Decatur is it right off highway 80
Karla - No. It is south...about 3 hours.
Brad/3 - are you near sacramento kim
Brad/3 - then i probably haven't
Kim/K/SCa - ...I am so tired. I am going to go lay awake with one eye open. Dustin is a bad boy.
Karla - If you live in the Chicago area...everywhere that is south of I-80 is "non-desirable"...according to them. So it is a standard joke with people around here.
Kim/K/SCa - 6 hours from Sacramento brad..........
Brad/3 - i'm trying to get a handle on where you're at Kim, proximity to San Fran?
Kim/K/SCa - My sister lives in Sacramento. I love it up there.
Brad/3 - Santa Barbara? San Luis Obispo?
Karla - My brother-in-law lives in Sacramento.
Kim/K/SCa - 8 hours from S.F. brad.............go north of L.A., southeast of Bakersfield.......
Brad/3 - near coast?
Karla - Brad...do you need some geography lessons?
Kim/K/SCa - Santa Barbara to the west............as the crow flies
Brad/3 - I'm just trying to figure out if i've been near there
Kim/K/SCa - Where in SAC Karla
Kim/K/SCa - Not near coast.............high desert
Karla - Actually, he lived in Sac for about 10 years and they recently moved to Davis.
Brad/3 - aha, where is that big thermometer? are you near that?
Kim/K/SCa - 4 hours west of Las VEgas
Kim/K/SCa - Davis is beautiful
Brad/3 - are you near the thermometer?
Karla - That is what they have told us.
Kim/K/SCa - That big thermometer is in Baker............like 2.5 hours from herer...........
Brad/3 - i'm getting closer
Karla - What is everyone planning on reading this summer?
Kim/K/SCa - Icky place
Karla - I am referring to professional books.
Brad/3 - what's the name of your little village again?
Brad/3 - Literally I thought my skin was going to fry in Baker, no kidding
Brad/3 - It was 115
Kim/K/SCa - I live in Palmdale, right next to Lancaster, Edwards Air Force Base
Brad/3 - nearest big city?
Brad/3 - look, kim, there's dustin. he's changed his name to stoner
Kim/K/SCa - The armpit of the world...........right there in Baker
stoner - nebraska
Karla - I was wondering about it myself.
Kim/K/SCa - very funny .............Brad! not nice to tease a mother about her son
Kim/K/SCa - I want to re-read Lucy Calkins, some 6-traits
Karla - Which Calkins?
Kim/K/SCa - ARe you looking at a map, Brad?
Brad/3 - i'm looking to re-read MOT and the new Ray book, I think. Plus bone up on some math stuff
Kim/K/SCa - both
Brad/3 - no, kim, not one handy
Brad/3 - let me see, brb
Karla - What is the new Ray stuff?
Kim/K/SCa - okay............an hour north of Magic Mountain.........1.5 hours north of Los Angeles
Karla - Kim...I picked up both. They are part of my "mound"
Brad/3 - never mind, i don't know what's happened to ol' Rand Mcnally
Brad/3 - not near coast, though, so I probably didn't come near.
Kim/K/SCa - I will send you a map quest thingy
Brad/3 - I drove up Highway 1 from La to sanfran
Karla - Any advice on what I should tackle first? I thought maybe I would categorize them (reading, writing, strategies, vocab, etc).
Brad/3 - Karla, out of which ones?
Kim/K/SCa - no....not near coast at all.....
Karla - Stoner - first time to this?
Kim/K/SCa - Instead of 1 you would drive north on 5
Brad/3 - maybe stoner is stoned
Brad/3 - Okay, i think i'm getting closer now
Kim/K/SCa - Mosaic of Thought first, WW, Reading with Meaning................
Karla - Brad...my list is literally too long to post. I have tried to obtain all of the current readings. I went through an IRA catalog and requested any that I thought fit my level. I have also aquired the 4 block books for upper grades.
Brad/3 - Have you done 4B before, Karla?
Karla - I own Mosaic, have WW, still looking for RWM (maybe I will read it online).
Kim/K/SCa - we like 4 blocks huh brad
Brad/3 - I'd start with MOT, It seems to be a foundation for many of the others
Brad/3 - We do?
Karla - Noone in my area implements 4 block...that I am aware of. This past year I have utilized F & P and STW, plus Nonfiction Matters.
Kim/K/SCa - thought so..........didn't we drool last week....?
Brad/3 - If you've done STW, then MOT should be snap. Mot is like the theory and STW is like the practical
Karla - THat is what I have heard
Kim/K/SCa - good ones Karla
Brad/3 - I like 4b, the question is, do you?
Kim/K/SCa - true
Karla - DO I take it that you guys do not like 4 block?
Karla - Okay Brad, I got your opinion...what about you Kim?
Kim/K/SCa - yes..........i do.
Brad/3 - I'm just surprised. Two years ago when I started with 4B, no one had heard of it, now it has really spread like wildfire and a lot of people are doing it. *I just hope it's being done correctly
Kim/K/SCa - one of the texts for ed 500 is classrooms that work..........
Brad/3 - What are some of y'all's goals for next year?
Karla - I find myself extracting information out of my readings and not adhering to any ONE thought or program.
Brad/3 - Excellent book, now in a new edition I saw last week
Karla - I just received that book too Kim.
Karla - Is it good?
Kim/K/SCa - i want to implement more MOT, RWM style...............
Kim/K/SCa - very good basic book, karla
Brad/3 - Karla, the beauty (to me) of 4B is you can use any program with it cause it's NOT a program, it's an organizational method with some good activities if you so choose
Karla - Kim...do I recall correctly that you are teaching undergrads too?
Kim/K/SCa - common sense stuff,krla
Brad/3 - I don't see them being competing methods, kim, you do?
Kim/K/SCa - yes.............kinder and college.....LOL
Brad/3 - I know I think that's funny too
Kim/K/SCa - no brad................you are right on
Karla - From what I have heard (chats, webrings), it seems like subjects such as science and social studies are not part of a daily lesson plan.
Brad/3 - aaay, i'm the fonz, right on.
Karla - Kim...what a spread!
Brad/3 - with 4B karla??? no, no, no
Kim/K/SCa - i still can't believe it..........i have to design a final exam this weekend
Karla - Yes...with 4 b
Kim/K/SCa - i think it all gets integrated, karla
Brad/3 - exactly, kim
Karla - I am big on integration.
Brad/3 - In fact, (as I said earlier), this is one of my goals for next year, to increase time spent on content areas
Kim/K/SCa - dustin is home! he is not laying on the road somewhere
Karla - Tell me one thing...what if you switch a class or two with another teacher, wouldn't that botch 4 B?
Karla - I know how you feel Kim.
Brad/3 - I'm thinking (and tell me what you think) of designating one day a week completely devoted to the ss/sci topic in all subjects. Any thoughts/suggestions?
Kim/K/SCa - no brad
Brad/3 - no, what, kim?
Brad/3 - depends, karla, what do you switch?
Karla - I try to integrate in units...over a period of weeks. The kids love it!
Kim/K/SCa - he told me he was going to BEST BUY..............LOL ........"Oh, didn't I tell you we were going to Chris's house to watch a movie?"
Brad/3 - LOL Kim,
Kim/K/SCa - I don't think it would botch 4b as long as you are both constantly integrating literacy
Karla - I think next year we will switch for more than we ever have before. I will teach all the science, vocab, art, and computer (she will do my math and SS) and we will have our own for writing and reading workshop. I think I will dearly miss SS.
Kim/K/SCa - YOU just wait, Brad. LIttle Clifford Pants there..............he will DRIVE !
Brad/3 - I would combine math/sci and ss/literacy but that's just me
Karla - Most of the literature I choose ties in with the topics for ss and sci.
Brad/3 - will you plan together karla
Kim/K/SCa - Brad...........you need to have science journals. Math journals......................maybe so they can write about their math learning. Sort of talk out a problem..............
Brad/3 - they have a thing called leashes now, Kim
Karla - I think we will keep tabs on each other more this year. Since she is teaching ss, I will want to know where she is so that I can integrate in art, computers, reading and writing.
Brad/3 - what??? journals?? what ??? why me???
Karla - Brad...Marilyn Burns has a great book for math journals.
Brad/3 - I think if you plan together and integrate it could definitely work
Brad/3 - Yes, she does, shall I get it?
Kim/K/SCa - So don't do journals. Sheez
Brad/3 - but why did you say that?
Karla - Kim...where have you found a good resource on science journals? I would love to use them, but have yet to find a good source for implementation.
Brad/3 - ((homer drool)))) sheez whiz
Karla - Brad...absolutely!
Brad/3 - I have a book (Evan-Moor Publishers) that has some good primary science journals with some frames and sentence starters. I was looking through their science stuff and it really can be useful (more than just a worksheet)
Kim/K/SCa - I made them....."I Spy With Two Big Eyes>" The cover has a pic of the kid with hand lenses mag eyeballs
Karla - My co-worker is currently in a class for el ed math. I will ask her if she has come acrossed any other "must haves."
Brad/3 - ooooh, you're good KIM, can you make some for me?
Karla - Okay guys...remember, I am 6th grade.
Brad/3 - That would be good Karla, we were talking about Constance Kamii earlier, have you read her?
Kim/K/SCa - If I get my digital camera this weekend I will take a pic for you
Karla - SOme of my students would love to "spy" with two big eyes!
Brad/3 - Sorry, Karla, forget Kamii then. (the books i'm thinking of only go up to 3)
Karla - No Brad. What has she written?
Kim/K/SCa - LOL Karla...................your kids would uh, LOVE these.............maybe. .....
Karla - Okay...what a let down.
Brad/3 - The journal for El math "Teaching Children Mathematics" that NCTM puts out is also really good (and some articles online free!) There goes those chickens
Karla - I also have some books at school about using literature with math.
Brad/3 - Kamii--Children Reinventing Arithmetic in three different books one for first, second, third
Kim/K/SCa - cheep cheep cheep........................
Karla - Somedays...some of my students could use her suggestions!
Kim/K/SCa - she is out of University of Hawaii I think
Brad/3 - who knows maybe she'll develop upwards, that's how she's done it so far.
Brad/3 - have you been to burns site mathpublications.com
Karla - no
Kim/K/SCa - we hatched a duck once in the classroom. the kids named him spike............he imprinted on dustin cuz I took him home for the weekend..............up and down the hallway..............cheeep cheep cheep.........he was so cute!
Brad/3 - new series teaching children arithmetic, arranged by topic, excellent practical resource, lessons/assessment/literature links. used the one for intro multiplication in 3rd this year. Kids liked it.
Karla - Do either of you have suggestions for good references on student conferencing?
Brad/3 - There's also a really good book on homework for the intermediate grades but not written by her
Brad/3 - I'll be writing that one Karla
Kim/K/SCa - I gotta go. Dustin plays a game online and he wants to "go there" and win power and prestige...............
Karla - What about classroom communities for the upper grades?
Karla - Seriously Brad?
Brad/3 - Kim, this happened last week. Tell him to get his power the old fashioned way--EArn it
Kim/K/SCa - karla go to the chatboard to post questions...........lots of good minds over there.
Brad/3 - Karla, try TRIBES for communities. I would love to do TRIBES schoolwide
Kim/K/SCa - not that brad isn't a good mind...................
Karla - I know...I know...it is just a matter of time...so little...maybe more this summer.
Kim/K/SCa - s TRIBES
Brad/3 - Student conferencing--lately I've caught onto Shelly Harwaynes stuff, she's good
Karla - I have some of hers. Who writes TRIBES?
Brad/3 - or Joanne Hindley and Sharon Taberski (who both work with Harwayne) and Hindley's book is all online stenhouse.com (cheep, cheep)
Kim/K/SCa - of course brad is always giving away a piece of his mind.............HARWAYNE! that is who i want to read too
Brad/3 - I forget who wrote TRIBES, but I first learned about it at SDE conference and the lady next to me at the booth said it was just excellent for building community. She had used it in her room and enjoyed it. I myself have yet to purchase it.
Kim/K/SCa - nighty night............sleep tight.............later gators
Karla - Isn't she who wrote Nonfiction Matters?
Brad/3 - KIm, you're a pooper. Tell Dustin he has an Oscar, what more power and prestige does he want. It's late go to bed
Karla - Night Kim...a mother can sleep once her children are home and safe.
Brad/3 - Nonfiction Matters is Steph Harvey
Karla - I guess we missed her Brad.
Karla - You are right Brad
Brad/3 - Karla, you're 6 in Illinois, huh? How many years?
Karla - What are some titles of the Hindley, Taberski, etc.?
Brad/3 - Hindley--In the Company of Children Taberski--On Solid Ground (but this is more for primary)
