judy3ca - Hi Brad. Hmmmm, I have LOTS of shoe boxes.
brad - I have plenty of boxes
judy3ca - gmta
judy3ca - Yours are probably moving boxes. Are you guys all settled?
brad - it's amazing sometimes what we'll go off on
brad - Our goal is that I can park in the garage by Monday
naneb - I have my shoebox all picked out!!
naneb - I can't park in my garage, Brad!!
judy3ca - Wow, Brad, that's impressive! We've lived here for 11 years and only one of our cars fits in the garage, LOL.
brad - most big stuff settled in. being new and all I've nearly drained my account paying for furniture to fill this @#$% place
naneb - I start school on Monday!!!
kathyb - Hi all, sorry I chose judy's color and had to log off/on again!
brad - perhaps if i hadn't entered some lengthy discussion about missions, i might've been done unpacking by now. LOL
judy3ca - kathy, very kind of you, LOL!
brad - Mae, come join our pack of wolves!
JennyBC - naneb: are you the one with the 4-blocks upper grades site?
Mae - I see the party has begun!
naneb - that is me, jenny
JennyBC - naneb: wow, you start school early!
naneb - I know
kathyb - I wonder how Kim is going with her garage and refrig, stove, washer and dryer... and the SINK. LOL
JennyBC - ooh nan then you're the expert! i've been looking through my 4-blocks upper grades stuff, planning on trying it for the first time this year
judy3ca - Mae, I hope you saw my post on the board about not responding. I hate it when people don't respond, but we had to do the teenage number today.
naneb - we don't have students until Friday
Mae - Anyone want to debate the instructional value of Clifford?
brad - everybody starting is getting me nervous about going back again. 3 weeks till students, 2 weeks till teachers
JennyBC - we start the day after labour day
Mae - I saw it. My DD is 5 - I already understand...sigh
brad - Is the teenage number the one where you expose your midriff and swivel your hips, Judy, or is that the mashed potato?
naneb - I am trying to plan this crazy block schedule and I am having problems
judy3ca - Thanks, Mae.
naneb - Judy, we called it my daughter's evil twin!!
Mae - My mind is rebelling...I don't want to go back to school! I'm not ready yet!!!
judy3ca - Brad, ROFLOL, but just you wait! I thought a teenage boy was trouble....
JennyBC - do you all know one another?
naneb - Jenny, I am not a 4 blocks expert, last year was my first year
kathyb - I go back the 16th to a windowless building and a broken Central Air building... $45,000 to fix and at least 8 working days!
judy3ca - nan, that's it! She's only awful about 10% of the time, but it's overwhelming!
JennyBC - naneb: how did it go?
brad - i wish i had central air
naneb - It seems like that doesn't it Jenny we all post on the Professional Reading board
judy3ca - kathy, oh no, that sounds awful!
JennyBC - where's everyone from?
naneb - judy, I used to tell her to leave the evil twin at home
naneb - judy, I used to tell her to leave the evil twin at home
brad - ohio
Mae - I'm going in Mon. and Tues. to assess the must do list. AARGG! Inservice in another week. How did it go by so fast? My consellation prize is Thanksgiving - I'm going to Walt Disney World!!!
judy3ca - jenny, yes, we do kind of know each other from the Prof Reading board.
brad - nan, you and your evil twin are both posting!!
judy3ca - LOL, Brad! You're quick!
JennyBC - sounds like many american teachers get alot of inservice at the end of the summer...i've never heard of that here
naneb - Jenny, I am getting lost trying to read all of the posts, I love 4 blocks and my kids did great
Mae - Jenny - where are you from?
judy3ca - Mae, you are so lucky to have planned a special trip for Thanksgiving--it will give your whole family something fun to look forward to.
naneb - I do have an evil twin, she lives in SD
JennyBC - <<<british columbia
brad - british columbia?
kathyb - Jenny, I have 1st in Iowa
naneb - she would tell you that I am the evil one though
Mae - I can't wait! I confess... that has been my reading lately!
JennyBC - i'll be teaching part-time in a 3-way split, 4/5/6
naneb - My kids will all be home for Thanksgiving
naneb - that's in Canada Brad
Mae - I will be at Liberty Tree Tavern in the Magic Kingdom for Thanksgiving!!!
judy3ca - Well, since Mae mentioned reading, LOL, I have to say I was looking at the pictures in RWM this afternoon....and every time I see Miller's classroom I want to change mine.
Erin - Hi everyone
naneb - I ate there once, Mae
brad - I happen to know ALL the canadian provinces in order from left to right, thank you very much.
judy3ca - (((Erin))))
naneb - judy, I like your classroom
JennyBC - really brad? quite impressive
brad - hi erin
naneb - I new that would get a response!!
JennyBC - and territories?
Mae - Ok judy, the book came and I haven't read it. What You Know By Heart came too - I did read the 1st chapter.
brad - yes
Erin - Justy got back from my son's hockey practice. Thank God for that bagged lettuce...quick salad.
Mae - Is is yummy nan?
judy3ca - nan, ROFLMAO, my classroom is, at this very moment, a pile of furniture, empty bbs, and piles of new books. What a mess!
brad - aren't there just 2?
kathyb - ME, too Judy. I have already spent enough, but then I think of KIM's KITCHEN.
Mae - Is IT yummy?
naneb - It was a while ago, I remember it was expensive, we had 3 kids and 2 adults and it was way over our budget
judy3ca - Good for you, Mae. You can just open RWM to the middle section to cheat and look at the pictures.
brad - That sounds like a good name for my autobiography--"Thank God for the Bagged Lettuce"
naneb - Okay, Judy I liked your OLD classroom
Mae - That's why I HAVE to QUIT buying books so I can EAT at WDW!
Erin - LOL Brad. I take it you eat it alot too? My autobiography would be "24 ounce non-fat blended mocha no whipped cream"
judy3ca - kathy, good point--our books couldn't be nearly as expensive as Kim's kitchen, right?
JennyBC - there's a tv show here called 'talking to americans'...it's one of those shows like the one that jay leno does, where they interview people on the street and ask them questions....this one is always asking americans questions about canada.....like "do you support the saskatchewan seal hunt?"....it's pretty funny....of course you know with editing they only show the funny answers
Mae - Pictures...yeah...that's the picture...hehehe
Erin - I have to quit buying books so I can buy new clothes
naneb - the teacher who is sharing my room came in and wants to put up some posters!! I am having a hard time giving up any wall space to parts of speech!!
kathyb - Judy are there pics of your room somewhere ... do tell.
JennyBC - brad: there's 3 territories now
brad - Kim's Kitchen--is that on Food Network (next to Thank God for the Bagged Lettuce)
naneb - Jenny, it is probably all funny parts!!
Mae - Erin - that's my next goal - after I finish my stint at Weight Watchers.
JennyBC - it gives canadians the impression that americans know nothing about canada
judy3ca - Kathy, old pics--2 years ago. I'm not even quite sure how to get there anymore.
naneb - I think most Americans don't know very much about Canada
JennyBC - which is of course an exaggeration
brad - Nan, I actually validate hanging a poster about parts of speech, cuz I'll be durned if I waste time TEACHING them, but they do have to know them for (tests?) Come to think of it, why do they have to know them?
JennyBC - one time they talked to a harvard professor and make him look like a real idiot
naneb - Oh brad, don't get me started on that subject!!
Erin - brad, so they can write better...come on, you know better
Mae - Now Brad, parts of speech are important - for writing...it's all in the approach
Erin - The more they circle the nouns the better they write...direct correlation, I'll find the research
kathyb - SPEAKING of posters... I have been absent from the chatboard and haven't looked to see if anyone commented about my 6 traits poster problem.
brad - I think maybe its just so we have a common language to discuss them???
naneb - LOL!!!
Mae - No noun circling..just noun "noticing" and noun writing...
naneb - I have some 6 traits posters if you want to download them
Erin - I agree Mae but has to be taught in context. I teach strong verbs using William Steig. Now they are looking for verbs in their writing for a reason
JennyBC - i'm going to have my class make up the 'motivational' posters for the class this year...i'll give them quotations to choose from and they will make the poster
naneb - as long as they are writing verbs in their writing
Mae - ME TOO Erin! William Steig is a master of verbs!
Erin - Nan LOL.
brad - Horror story--I had a 6th grade teacher who made us put S above the Subject and V above the Verb on EVERY SINGLE ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT. (this was before process writing) Maybe this is why I rebel against parts of speech (although I did enjoy diagramming sentences for some reason)
judy3ca - William Steig is my favorite, too!!!!
Mae - Get over it brad - it was a long time ago...
naneb - me too!!! Brad, my favorite English assignment!!
Erin - Knowing my grammar paid off in my college linguistics class Only about 1/4 of us knew our parts of speech
Mae - I need a good preoposition author...anyone know one?
brad - brb, there are children who are about to find out a few new verbs
Erin - brad...relax...have a HO HO
kathyb - Nan, my problem is that I have to use the special one created by the district...you know too hard to read for 1st, no ownership, etc. I want to do what Debbie does like with imaging... use student sentences.
naneb - the 6th graders here have to memorize prepositions
Mae - I still don't know my parts of speech...LOL!
JennyBC - is brad teaching right now?
Erin - Mae, not this second, but I have heard of one I'll get back to you
brad - at this minute I'm yelling at children
Erin - teaching his kids to OBEY, BE QUIET, SIT still, LISTEN, all good verbs
Erin - Oh YELLING another good one
judy3ca - ((((Kim))))
naneb - Hi, Kim
Kim/K1/Ca - I can hear you yelling from here, Brad......sheesh
Erin - Hi KIm
Kim/K1/Ca - (((smooches)))
brad - i'll let kim entertain for a moment while I attend to children who just reminded me bedtime will be at 10:48 tonite
Mae - Oh, Erin, Brad...that is GOOD!
naneb - He's just tying up a few loose ends of his!!
Mae - Hi Kim
kathyb - Hey KIM how's the kitchen? Brad wants to know if it on FOOD TV yet!
judy3ca - Kim, any updates on the kitchen or the diorama position? You've had me in stitches--thanks!
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh, the kitchen is soooooo cute!!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Well....actually, I have been going through my classics library and making dioramas.
Mae - Okay already on the dioramas...it was a good thread, huh? hehehe I come back with a vengence...
Erin - Just when I was going to have students do a diorama of a place they went this summer you guys go and ruin it for me
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh, yeah... now it is **forbidden**, LOL!
Erin - The diorama of Crime and Punishment is a little depressing
Mae - I was saving shoe boxes. I've got 4 this week already.
Kim/K1/Ca - Mae.. hugs to you for that thread. I think it invigorated us
Erin - LOL Mae
JennyBC - what materials do you supply the kids with for dioramas? i remember doing them when i was a kid, but i 've never done one with students
Kim/K1/Ca - LOL, Erin.... Crime and Punishment.......yeah, that one is a little, DEEP
JennyBC - mae: i went to a shoe store in the mall once and they gave me enough shoe boxes for the whole class
Erin - I agree Kim. The board was getting a little slow
judy3ca - Mae, Kim's so right--it did seem to get us going again.
Mae - If only my collegues felt invigorated when I watch Clifford and have profound questions...sigh...
Kim/K1/Ca - They just don't KNOW, Mae, how profound that big red dog really is............
kathyb - If I remember right Ezra Jack Keats has one of his characters make one of the night sky in one of his books.
Mae - I always had a soft spot for that dog...
Kim/K1/Ca - Hi to JennyBC! You joining us.....?
Erin - Jenny, I think if you read the thread on the chatboard, most of us disagreed with assigning dioramas to the whole class for an assignment
Mae - There you go Kathy - our answer...do what the masters do!
JennyBC - which chat board was it erin?
judy3ca - Very tactful, Erin.
JennyBC - hi kim
Kim/K1/Ca - I do a Clifford thing the first day of school. They make little Clifford dogs......
Erin - Professional reading chatboard
Mae - Get out of cyberspace Kim! Little Cliffords?
Kim/K1/Ca - ((Kathy))) your eMail made me tired.
Erin - Thank you Judy. It's nice to know I can be once in awhile
kathyb - Kim, crazy story number 2 is on its way!
JennyBC - oh my god, i'm not reading all those threads!!!
judy3ca - Erin, LOL, my husband always remind me what an effort I have to make to be tactful.
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, Mae...so cute!! You use 9x12 sheets of red construction paper...fold in half. Cut out a HALF CIRCLE from the "selvege" edge.............
naneb - Jenny, that is the way that board is all the time
Erin - Tact is not one of my strong points either. I'm working on my administrator;s credential and know that's an area I need to improve on
JennyBC - how could you talk that much about dioramas?
Kim/K1/Ca - You have 2 pieces.... one you cut a tail along the circular portion and cut the rest in half for ears. The other half circle is the head.......make sense?
Mae - Ok, I'll let you get away w/it cause my little DD is gonna be in kinder and she likes Clifford.
naneb - TACT is my middle name!! LOL!!
Erin - Since Kim mentioned it...what do your first days look like?
kathyb - Speaking of bag salad, I am hungry, but for crablegs. Sure wish we could all get together on Sunday at Red Lobster!
Kim/K1/Ca - It is frightening, Jenny, truly...very frightening. But we DID!!!
Erin - Then they make connections with Clifford, question Clifford and lastly, synthesize, Clifford before they can take it home
judy3ca - Erin, I have nooooo interest in admin for me, but I learned a great thing last year. My wonderful Lit Coach tells me exactly what she likes--using ed. jargon. Jan says this is very cool.
Mae - Jenny - it's the mystery of this group! How could we talk so much about reading, writing, research and the instructional value of it all. We ARE the NERDS!
brad - Quick, think of the instructional value of making little Cliffords or I'll sic Jan on you
judy3ca - Tactful nan, my pal, ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
naneb - Well, Jenny it wasn't really a very long conversation just heated and funny!!
judy3ca - Hi Kathy
Erin - Well the whole conversation wasn't about dioramas, there was mention of book reports
Kim/K1/Ca - (((Other Kathy)))
brad - I'm with kathyb, I just heated up a hot dog, and it's not going well. (we were out of bag salad)
Kathy/IA - Good evening all!
JennyBC - hahah mae that's what my boyfriend keeps telling me when he sees me browsing through chatboards and in chatrooms....i'm a NERD and I don't care! lol
naneb - I can hear my sped director laughing, Judy!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Where is the Ho Ho KING? The Emporer of Literacy?
Mae - Instructional value of making little Cliffords - fine motor skills?
naneb - I went to La Fiesta Brava and ate Mexican, it was scrumptious!! tamales!!
brad - Fine Motor Skills, it is!
Erin - Sorry brad, I'd send you some over if I could
judy3ca - nan, and now you can say 'tamales' right?
JennyBC - i'm going to go see austin powers tonight
Kim/K1/Ca - No, Mae....keeping 5 year olds busy the first dayof school....... following oral directions, "enriching" a story experience............ room daycore......
Mae - I have a knack for tying anything I want to do to the curriculum. It is a talent.
naneb - Yes, I can Thanks to you!!
brad - Kathy, I just had a bottomless bucket of crab legs at Red Lobster a few weeks back
Michelle/3/OR - hi, everyone!
Kim/K1/Ca - Jenny, my son was disappointed in Austin, sad to say. And he loves MIke Myers.
judy3ca - (((Michelle)))
Mae - Ooooooh...Kim...you are GOOOOOOOD!
Kathy/IA - You all are making me hungry!
Erin - (((Michelle))
naneb - Yew!!! I don't eat at Red Lobster!!
JennyBC - kim: i've heard it was the funniest of the three?
judy3ca - Oh yum, Brad, I love crab!
Mae - I can't keep my ONE 5 year old busy and out of my hair for 5 minutes!
naneb - I got the real thing here, shrimp and crab that were swimming this morning!!
Kim/K1/Ca - (((Michelle))) ........ and Brad, how is that possible? A "bottomless bucket" of crab legs?
JennyBC - seafood
Erin - Didn't they all fall out?
brad - Kim, I'm just thinking what color I'm painting your mini-kitchen when we do "Trading Classrooms." I'm thinking a cypress green, inspired of course with the dishtowels I just bought
Mae - Don't talk about food cause I'm on a dadburn diet and it's making me cranky!!! :o) :o)
kathyb - Lucky NAN, but in IOWA there is no hope of the real thing.
Erin - OK Mae I'm thinking about carrot sticks and water.
Kim/K1/Ca - NO! Thou Shalt NOT paint my little kitchen. NO NO NO..... I can just see that Doofus decorator getting a hold of them.........
JennyBC - i'm outta here, talk to you all later
Kathy/IA - Unless we want fish from the Missouri or Mississippi River ... ick!
Mae - Much better Erin...I can stay now.
brad - bagged lettuce is good if you're on a diet (with the right fattening creamy dressing of course)
naneb - Y'all just need to come visit and we will eat boiled shrim, garlis bread, coleslaw and drink beer, Like my son says, don't get no better than that!!
Erin - Bye Jenny enjoy the movie
Kim/K1/Ca - Send your daughter to me, Mae. She will be MOT-trained in no time. "Mommy, I just made a CONNECTION!"
naneb - I cannot type, I swear!!
Michelle/3/OR - oh, hey, I have a teaching-related question...
Mae - naneb - you are killin' me...
brad - imagine that, a teaching-related question!! What will they think of next?
judy3ca - Let 'er rip, Michelle
Mae - I'll put a stamp on her and mail her...hehehe
naneb - that is a lowfat meal, if you don't drink the beer
Kim/K1/Ca - ASK, Michelle. We will try to keep Brad from saying anything silly.
Mae - True naneb
judy3ca - That's pretty good, Mae--do you know the book "Mailing May?" It's terrific.
naneb - Ha!!Ha!! Good Luck!!
brad - stuff me with crab
Kathy/IA - Light beer??
Erin - Judy, I love that book
Kim/K1/Ca - I love that book, Judy
Michelle/3/OR - hehe, brad....anyway, my principal called today and asked me to be on the interviewing committee for a new counselor. I agreed, but now I'm trying to think of things to ask
Mae - No - I'll have t check it out.
Erin - They had it at bookcloseouts
naneb - I bought Missing May
Mae - Beer is only 2 points on Weight Watchers!
Kim/K1/Ca - What kind of counselor..........?
brad - good question, michelle
judy3ca - We have such good taste in books!
Michelle/3/OR - i know what I want in a counselor, personality-wise, but other than that, I don't know..
Kathy/IA - Is that what you are doing, Mae? (WW) I need to get started on that AGAIN!
diane - hi everyone
Kim/K1/Ca - ((((Missing May))) one of Rylant's best books. The prose.......OMG! I tear up just thinking about it.......
Michelle/3/OR - elementary guidance counselor
Mae - Michelle - a lot of interviewing committees use a list of predetermined questions. I wouldn't worry about it.
Erin - Brad has validated the question so people may now answer it
naneb - ask "What support they will offer teachers in dealing with behavior problems?"
Erin - Hi diane
brad - I'd like a counselor who actually meets with children
Michelle/3/OR - our last 2 counselors left because of lack of admin support and heavy caseloads
Erin - I'd like a counselor who will be consistent with appointments and follow up with the teacher
kathyb - Michelle, will s/he be coming into the room for class lessons or only small groups/individuals or all of the above?
judy3ca - (((Diane)))
Michelle/3/OR - ours don't use predet. questions.
Kim/K1/Ca - Hi diane!! ((smooches))... we are answering Michelle's question about interviewing a school counselor.
Michelle/3/OR - all of the above, kathy
diane - ahhh...the school counsellor...ours is great...mostly
Mae - Many of those questions are dictated by your district.
brad - And also one who tests a student in October and meets with them before, oh, June, say, so that something can be done with them THAT school year, before going through the same process the next year. . .
judy3ca - I detest counselors who bribe kids.
Kim/K1/Ca - I always like psych people who are genuinely INTERESTED in children as human beings......genuine people, not all caught up in "psychobabble eduspeak"
Erin - I agree Brad, the process is so S..L..O..W
diane - brad, what do you mean by "test?"
brad - bribing kids?? Like with Ho' Ho's and bottomless buckets of crab?
Michelle/3/OR - me too, judy. that's what our last counselor did.
brad - testing for possible learning disabilities
naneb - I hate counselors who believe kids over teachers
Kim/K1/Ca - Someone real familiar with ideas like logical consequences and personal responsibility.........
diane - wow, our counselor is not in charge of that at all...
naneb - We have a department that does testing not counselors
brad - I agree, Kim, and not that fakey-speak-to-kids, but some honest let's-get-down-to-it-understand-where-a-kid's-coming-from talk
Michelle/3/OR - oh, our counselors don't do that, brad
Kim/K1/Ca - ditto naneb and brad........yeah
Mae - I detest counselors who gossip in the office about teachers based on what kids say.
brad - ITA Mae
naneb - testing cannot take more than 45 days brad
kathyb - Our district has a set of lessons for the counselor to follow in the classroom. Perhaps, the counselor could describe a typical lesson in his/her own words.
judy3ca - Right, Brad, I've never heard it called that before, but I hate that fakey-speak, too. Hooray, new jargon for my Lit Coach!
Erin - Are your counselors licensed? Ours are in school still
Kim/K1/Ca - I would be interested in the counselors credentials, Michelle. Somebody who has an MFCC or an MSW.......in addition to the Pupil Personnel Services credential........
brad - it does in our building, naneb, for several reasons too lengthy to mention here. PErhaps we can get a good thread going. LOL
judy3ca - Erin, we have one licensed and one in school--both are part-time.
Kim/K1/Ca - Somebody real knowledgeable about IDEA, and all the SPED laws.
naneb - that is probably the whole intervention process, that can take a long time by itself, before testing even starts
brad - kathyb, where i did my student teaching, the counselor had lessons. Although I had to give up 45 minutes of my day every other week, I thought it was valuable.
Michelle/3/OR - yes, kathy, they will have to, because one big complaint from our former counselors was that the district doesn't have a guidance program adopted for them to use when teaching in the classrooms. The person will have to come up with their own lessons
Erin - Our counselors do not do lessons. Children only see them if referred and then it is not consistent.
brad - yes, naneb, that is one reason. First I have to bring them before the intervention committee, which is a waste of time, then blah blah blah. . .
Mae - It's after 10 p.m. I have to go weigh in at Weight Watchers at 7:30 a.m. Wish me 2.5 lbs. loss. Good night all.
diane - how often do you all have counselors come in to teach?
Kim/K1/Ca - I have never worked in a school with a counselor...... we had a district psychologist who was stretched mighty thin.
naneb - we have 2 full time counselors and 2 behavior specialists
Erin - Bye Mae.. Good luck at weigh-in
Kim/K1/Ca - ((Mae)) take care.
judy3ca - Oh, I think we're talking about very different things. Our counselors only meet with a few kids with very SERIOUS problems.
diane - night, mae...good luck
brad - ours is pretty thin also, kim.
Erin - I think so too judy.
judy3ca - Good luck, Mae!
brad - judy, i know the posts are moving fast. What do you mean by bribery?
kathyb - Yes, Brad in my school it is the same -- 45 minutes every other week and I love it. Our TAG program for K-3 is run the same way, but on opposite weeks.
Michelle/3/OR - our counselors teach each class once per month. They are teaching in the classrooms one day per week
Kim/K1/Ca - BRB .... Dustin is hungry.
brad - that @#$% boy is old enough to get his own self something to eat, and tell him I said so
naneb - ours don't teach classes, they meet with students individually or with small groups
diane - oh...michelle...i just realized that i have a question for you. are you on a year-round schedule in woodburn? is anybody there?
Michelle/3/OR - the counselors in our district are overwhelmed. I wish the admin would get a clue about why they keep quitting.
brad - <----about to be beaten up by big jock teenage Dusty
naneb - brb
judy3ca - Brad, an example of bribery. A few years ago we had a fifth grader who wouldn't talk--I mean would not talk. Rarely, we could get a few words out of him. The counselor and principal agreed to give him Pokeman card packages for speaking 6 complete sentences per day. I object to their solution, but guess who won?
Michelle/3/OR - no. woodburn used to be yr-round, but not any more
brad - that is just amazing, judy. You learn something new every day.
diane - thanks
kathyb - We have a behavioral interventionist for serious problems. Also, our grant pays for a "play therapist" NO, there is no couch or washing machine.
Erin - Just checked the chatboard and there is a post from someone who wants to know why we don't like monthly book reports. I hear a can of worms opening
judy3ca - Brad, well, since it didn't work, I hope THEY learned something.
Erin - We had a play therapist for two years but then the money ran out
brad - Good, Judy, I'm glad it didn't work
naneb - back
Michelle/3/OR - we have a school psychologist for real serious situations. but she's not full-time.
diane - judy, i have seen a lot of what you describe...
brad - Erin, I read that post and heard that sound too
judy3ca - kathy, I'm getting a kid next year who comes with an occupational therapist--I wonder what that's all about?????
brad - diane, you have another story of bribery???
diane - oooo....you guys were able to "visualize" from the post heading
Michelle/3/OR - oh...i haven't had a chance to read any of the threads yet....i see you got a big one going about dioramas and such
brad - oh, michelle, you just HAVE to read the one on dioramas, it was too too good
Erin - THe "diorama" post will go down in chatboard history
judy3ca - Michelle, maybe, ummm, maybe we better not get started on dioramas.
diane - brad, i had a child that wouldn't eat...was bribed with all kinds of things to entice her
Kim/K1/Ca - Poor Dustin came home with an excruciating ear ache............. I gave him tylenol and a hot compress.....he just woke up. So I fed him. Why do these things always happen on a Friday night?
kathyb - I've had a student that would see an OT weekly. Judy, will the OT be there daily?
Michelle/3/OR - yes...when i left for Vegas, the board was pretty slow..but y'all really made up for those few slow days while I was gone.
Erin - I say we post tomorrow on the value of making characters out of paper plates and see what Jan has to say
judy3ca - kathy, I don't even know what an OT is???? What do they do?
Kim/K1/Ca - OT here was a joke.............. I ended up "doing it myself...."
Michelle/3/OR - having all that fun without me!
brad - I think the board was "off" one day
judy3ca - Kathy, you'd better be able to cite the RESEARCH!!
diane - lol, erin
Erin - Judy, also try Advil. Will help any inflammation. You can alternate the two
brad - An OT, or occupational therapist, is someone who insures we all pick the right career.
judy3ca - Kim, what does OT mean? What did you do?
Kim/K1/Ca - That diorama thread was fabulous............. what fun!
naneb - ROFLMAO!!!!
Michelle/3/OR - now I will HAVE to read it!
naneb - OT, basically handles phyical therapy above the waist
Kim/K1/Ca - Well, it is an occupational therapist........ I had Teddy who couldn't control his thumbs. So I let him play with my frog clicker.
brad - Why is Nan Rolling and why is Erin speaking up on behalf of Advil???
judy3ca - nan, I'm stunned...we have therapy divided by the waist????
naneb - things to do with the hands and fine motor skills, like using a sicssors, pencil grip etc
Erin - I'm talking about Advil for judy's son
naneb - PT, does large motor skills, walking etc.
brad - Divided by waist??? ROFLMAO
judy3ca - Erin, LOL, it's Kim's son.
Erin - Sorry, DUH momemt
naneb - I am laughing so hard I cna hardly write!! OMG!!!
brad - That's why I was curious. I thought you were talking to KIM, but you said JUDY
Erin - Someone please take Advil!!!
brad - me too nan
judy3ca - Now that I'm regaining control, OT is fine motor and PT is gross motor?
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, Dustin is my youngest son. He went with his auto shop teacher down to a racing shop today. On the way home, the elevation changes....... his ear "popped." He was in a lot of pain.
brad - I'm literally rolling on floor too, computer not hooked up to desk yet
naneb - Yes, basically that is it
Erin - You're so "punny" brad
Kim/K1/Ca - I don't have ADVIL I have TYLENOL.... I really need some VICODIN or something...........
judy3ca - Thanks nan, you'd think I would have investigate this, but I just want to help the kid with reading, LOL.
Erin - Or a margerita..Kim
brad - Erin, take two Advil and a bag of lettuce, and call me in the morning
naneb - I love this group!! Y'all have made my day or night!! whatever!
naneb - Oh Erin, I had 2 of those tonight too
Erin - Is that with or without Ho Hos
Kim/K1/Ca - (back to OT).... then I had Kayla who had a TBI (total brain injury) and didn't walk right.........the whole class did "penguin walk" on the way back from recess..........I called it OT
kathyb - The occupational therapist working on handwriting, eye-hand coordination, etc. After my carpel tunnel surgery this spring I went 3 times a week to an OT. My strength in my hand is still poor and my writing is shaky, but they say it will get better in time.
brad - Now, let's get back to those paper plates we were going to make
naneb - Kim, Now you know that was PT!!
kathyb - That's right Judy.
diane - i got booted...but there was a lot of purple anyway. i see that now i match kim
Erin - You wouldn't let me do character in a can, so I'm doing character on a paper plate.
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh, right, Naneb.......PT not OT. What a dooofus I am. Throw lettuce at me.
Michelle/3/OR - so what's the paper plate deal? what did I miss here?
judy3ca - Okay, Erin, count me in. I'm doing Shrek and the princess on paper plates.....
Kim/K1/Ca - Character in a Can. What a classic, Erin. I just love it. A whole new use for cans.
brad - erin, I'm assigning you Head of Pharmaceutical Research, ESIA
naneb - Erin, I did story jigsaw puzzles but, they did have to write a description to go along with their drawings
Michelle/3/OR - is that part of the diorama thing?
Erin - I'm doing "The Invisible Man' cause I'm not very artistic
Kim/K1/Ca - diane......dahling, I just looove your color! I see you wear it belted..........
brad - Can they be coffee cans, juice cans, . . .?
Erin - Thank you I was an R.N. in my past life so I accept
Michelle/3/OR - i feel so lost....I was only gone 4 days!
diane - i really just wanted to be like you, kim...
brad - Maybe I should do your appliances in orange-red then, Kim?
judy3ca - OMG, my parents were just here visiting and they thought they were doing me a favor--they brought 40 coffee cans!!!
naneb - We all do diane!!!
Michelle/3/OR - well...I've never done a diorama in my life. I've never assigned one either.
Erin - Judy, LOL
naneb - Now, you can use them all, Judy!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Now, Judy... you can do Character in a Can!!!
diane - oh judy, think of the character in a can ideas...
brad - You know, like mae, I occasionally felt guilty we weren't doing those kinds of things last year, especially around holidays
judy3ca - Diane, you're not lost because you were gone--we're all lost!
kathyb - My friends do cereal box book reports. I wonder whose head is on the Wheaties cereal box now?
Kim/K1/Ca - rrrrr
Michelle/3/OR - that's me, judy
brad - Kathy, tee hee. Cereal box reports?? Who thinks this stuff up?
Kim/K1/Ca - Actually, with cans that size you can do CHARACTERS in a can. You just have to be careful who you group with who..................
diane - lol, michelle, i have been back for almost a week...i just got confused!
Erin - brad, same here. I usually do just one holiday item. My kids don't complain though
judy3ca - oops, sorry Diane and Michelle, LOL!
brad - Who was eating their Frosted Mini-Wheats, reading the back of the box, and thought, "Hey, this would be a @#$% fine surface for a book report!"
naneb - The new issue of Mailbox comes out and next thing you know, Everyone is doing it!!!
diane - i thought maybe i still had smoke clouding my brain!
Erin - WE are a bunch of characters. Can we fit in a can?
Kim/K1/Ca - I mean CERTAIN characters you just can't put with OTHER characters.........there would be fighting, anarchy, chaos.........fur ................
brad - LOL ERin, so true
judy3ca - Erin, ROFLOL!
Michelle/3/OR - where were you with smoke, Diane?
brad - Nan, shame on you, I wasn't going to mention a certain publication
Michelle/3/OR - I quit getting Mailbox. I stopped Bookbag a long time ago.
diane - southern oregon, michelle
Kim/K1/Ca - (((((((Jan))))) ..... ((((smooches)))))
brad - Actually I like mailbox. It can stimulate you with making connections, even if you don't follow recipes
Michelle/3/OR - Oh...finally, today, my Wondrous Words arrived! I ordered it over a month ago!
diane - almost all inlaws live in illinois valley
Erin - Jan, just in time
naneb - ((((((((((((((((((((Jan))))))))))))))) Come build a character in a can!!
Jan - I'm here---just finished scrubbing my tile!
judy3ca - Hooray, Jan's here. We can do research, make ragout, and throw wet blankets!
brad - (((Jan)))) (Why am I writing all these parentheses?))
Kim/K1/Ca - You do not, Brad.......... don't lie like a rug.
Erin - Or a cereal box report
diane - hey, maybe jan's wet blankets could put out forest fires!!
brad - Jan, by any chance are you bald and on a bottle of liquid cleaner?
Erin - Quit being so paranthetical brad
naneb - those are hugs, Brad
Jan - Blankets are soaking, just in case
Kim/K1/Ca - Judy has tons of coffee cans. Bunches and Bunches of Coffee Cans. We can do CHARACTERS in a can.
brad - What don't I do, Kim?
Erin - Jan we haven't worked out the acronyms for the night yet.
Michelle/3/OR - oh, we could really use those wet blankets here in Oregon
judy3ca - And I'll share the family paper plates, too!
Michelle/3/OR - brad, don't you know when you are hugging someone??
Jan - Mrs. Clean, that's me...
Kim/K1/Ca - Bradley.... you do NOT like Mailbox. You dislike Mailbox. You know it.
brad - HOnest to god lesson---Never use Chinet to do paper plate projects. Learned my lesson the hard way this year
diane - i kind of like the thought of brad loosely throwing hugs around...hussy
Erin - Hard to cut Huh?
Kim/K1/Ca - That would be like saying you collect Frank Shaffer or something............
Jan - What is a cereal box report. Sounds like something for the first wet blanket
brad - I like their organizational and management sections, kimberly, adn that's honest. I even bought the two Super Books. (don't hurt me)
Erin - Definitely, Jan wet blanket coming down
judy3ca - Jan, LOL, you're a quick study, too!
Kim/K1/Ca - Well, Jan, Brad was eating his Frosted Mini Wheats and saw the surfaces of the box...........one thing led to another. He told his wife, "(*&^% fine place to put a book report!"
judy3ca - Kim, I like to read Mailbox, too.
Jan - diane, what is happening with your family?
brad - No, we were doing glyphs as a getting to know you thing first day, and you just can't draw on the waxy kind, can you?? LOL, I scrapped the whole project after a week.
Erin - ROFLMAO Kim
kathyb - OH, Jan, you are so right about the first wet blanket!
Jan - Judy, it's those fumes from the bleach!
Kim/K1/Ca - Judy and Brad (sigh).. . the next thing you will tell me is that you like Danielle Steel.
brad - By the way, what's the instructional value of glyphs?
Jan - Is a cereal box report anything like a diorama?
brad - I have never read Danielle Steel, (but have read a couple Mary Higgins Clark's)
judy3ca - Yuck to Danielle Steele, but sometimes there's a gem hiding in Mailbox. And they try so hard.
Michelle/3/OR - I have used ideas from the mailbox yearbooks...but rarely from the magazines. but not enough to keep a subscription going
Erin - It's in the same category, Jan
diane - jan, thanks for asking. the firefighters have worked hard the past few days to build a fire line. the valley is still on a 30 min evacuation order, but as of today it feels more positive. of course, things change every hour
Kim/K1/Ca - I think glyphs force you to do a lot of "abstract" or "representational" thinking..........dont' you?
Erin - diane, glad to hear there is a little good news
Jan - Funny you would ask, Brad, I've been wondering about glyphs.
brad - I like them for sharing personal information in a unique way, but other than that??? OH, jan???
Jan - Diane, that is wonderful news!
Kim/K1/Ca - OMG, diane..........I am sooooo sorry! I forgot to ask you.
kathyb - Glyphs are a mathematical thing.
Erin - You can also ask kids to make generalizations by looking at all the glyphs. Good for math
Jan - I use to date Danielle Steel's ex husband!
diane - glyphs - another way to organize and interpret data...i'm not terribly convinced of their effectiveness
brad - thank you erin; that's good too
Kim/K1/Ca - I do a couple of glyphs.........with careful explanation, the kids understand the whole sorting and glyphy idea...............
brad - which one, jan? LOL
kathyb - Yes, Jan a cereal box report is sort of like a diorama.
Kim/K1/Ca - GET OUT, Jan! Really?
judy3ca - Jan, no kidding? And another friend of mine used to date John Denver (before he changed his name).
Erin - I do an "All about Me" glyph the first day.. Easy to do and as Kim? (I think) said something about quick room decor
naneb - was that before or after? Jan
brad - and Judy's college mate dated Jim Morrison. YOu people are better than Kevin Bacon
Jan - Yep, John Traina---her last hubby, I think
diane - my husband was named michael jackson...before he (my husband) changed his name
Kim/K1/Ca - It was during...........Danielle wrote a book about it. It was Jan's bodice on the front cover.......
brad - That's what I tried, Erin. May do it again, but with different plates. LOL
judy3ca - Brad, well, actually, she lived next door in the dorm.
brad - LOL, Jan's bodice. LOL ROFLMAO An instructionally sound bodice
Jan - I do have a past other than Madeline and wet blankets. And ragout
Erin - It's on a big ME (those letters) with different icons to color depending on what fits
naneb - ROFLMAO@Brad!!!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Well, let's see......Sam Elliot used to come into my husbands store to use the restroom. He'd say, "hey Dan." and then go pee. Then he would come out and Dan would say, "Hey, Sam." and then Sam would zip up and leave.
Erin - A research based bodice
Erin - Actually a very clean bodice
brad - Is this true, Kim, or are you just making us Jurassic Park fans jealous?
judy3ca - Kim, ROFL, but I love Sam Eliot (he's that sort of craggy actor, right?)
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh yes,,,,,,,, my husband used to shoot skeet with Robert Stack.
Jan - John Traina was not nearly so interesting, Kim
Kim/K1/Ca - Very true, Brad.
diane - i once checked kiefer southerland into a hotel room...
brad - Your husband shot Skeet Ulrich??
Jan - I went to college with Batman. Top that one!
Erin - Which Batman?
brad - which one jan?
Kim/K1/Ca - Dang, Jan! BATMAN! (I am in awe)
judy3ca - Adam West or the cute one?
diane - which batman, jan, adam west?
brad - who's the cute one?
Erin - Obviously not Adam West
Jan - The original Batman--Adam West. He was Bill Anderson when I knew him. Sat next to him in econ class.
diane - did he/you go to school in walla walla?
judy3ca - Well, I hate to admit this Brad, but I liked Michael Keaton at Batman (I sure hope I have the name right).
brad - I had breakfast with former Miss America Donna French Henry
Jan - Okay, Erin, he IS older than I am!
Kim/K1/Ca - So Jan........ were you the chick in distress, held over the vat of boiling acid and Batman would have to come and rescue your bodice AFTER a couple of rounds of "BIFF" and "ZAP"
MIchelle/3/OR - I did too, Judy.
brad - Of course, she was at one table in the restaurant and I was at the other
judy3ca - Michelle, good!
Jan - diane, yes we did---Whitman College
Kim/K1/Ca - I love the way Michael Keaton says, "I'm Batman."
Erin - that's not having dinner "with" that's having dinner " in the vicinity of"
Erin - or breakfast sorry
brad - Does it help that she looked at me and smiled?
Kim/K1/Ca - I used to do banking for Lohmann and Barkley.......
Jan - Yes, Kim, the one and only chick
diane - whitman was my dream school....couldn't afford it, though...
MIchelle/3/OR - nice try, brad
Erin - She probably thought "Poor boy doesn't know he has scrambled egg on his chin"
Erin - Or is that ho-ho on his chin?
brad - That settles it. I'm doing a cereal box report on my internet friends and all their famous connections.
Jan - Great school, diane. I am old enough, I could afford it THEN!
Erin - Well I'm doing Batman in a can
naneb - I have no famous connection
Erin - Me neither nan.
Kim/K1/Ca - Just don't do Danielle Steel.........
judy3ca - I met Bruce Jenner in the grocery store.
MIchelle/3/OR - i can't think of any famous connection either. I have to settle for the Air Force pilots.
brad - me either naneb. wait, I saw Melanie Griffith across the street and touched Janet Jackson's (secret) ex-hubby
Erin - I don't think I could do those characters at an elementary school (Steele)
kathyb - Tom Arnold's step mom is my associate.
brad - what happened to jan?
Kim/K1/Ca - Tom Arnold put Ottumwa on the map.
judy3ca - Chris Evert talked to me.
brad - associate what?
Erin - Wait I remember one. I have a picture of me when I was 2 with Candice Bergman (sp)
Jan - Got thrown off this silly board!
judy3ca - associate what?
Erin - And when I was eight I was on the same plane with the New York Yankees
brad - about MOT, Judy?? LOL
diane - i checked aaron neville into a hotel room once...and nina totenburg (not the same room)
judy3ca - My son met Arnold S.....and Boris Becker on an airplane.
Kim/K1/Ca - An associate is Iowa's version of a "paraprofessional." An aide.
kathyb - He came and read to my class... many years ago, when he was with Roseanne.
judy3ca - brad, right, Mothballs of Tennis
Kim/K1/Ca - Man, diane, that was SOME hotel!
kathyb - No, Radar put Ottumwa on the map first.
brad - is he that jittery in person too, kathyb?
naneb - I talked to Karen Carpenter once for about an hour
MIchelle/3/OR - the Portland Trailblazers used to always eat at the Burger King I managed. It was next to their training facility. That's as famous as I can get.
brad - see, nan, you do have a famous connection
judy3ca - nan, bet she didn't eat anything
Jan - Diane, where the heck is this hotel?
brad - but how on earth did you talk to Karen Carpenter for an hour?
naneb - took some serious thinking though
kathyb - BRAD, my first grade associate. You know reads with kids.
diane - oh...there's more...george stephanopolis (can't spell that one), run dmc, bob dylan's manager (bob wouldn't come in)...it was in eugene of all places
naneb - we weren't eating at the time, Judy
diane - cowboy junkies....
Jan - In EUGENE?! I thought that was a quiet college town.
diane - only interesting part of the job
naneb - it was at a concert and my roomamate and I went to the girls locker room to avoid the lines at the RR and there she was, so we stayed and talked to her
MIchelle/3/OR - Eugene's not so quiet a college town.
kathyb - YEs, Brad, he is that jittery in person.
judy3ca - I saw Karch Kiraly's Olympic gold medal
diane - ahhh...but jan, it's a hotbed of culture
kathyb - His neice was in my first grade.
brad - how interesting, naneb. (or was it?)
Erin - I guess I need to get out more and meet me some people
Kim/K1/Ca - Speaking of college towns....... only a few more weeks, huh Judy? Pay for a meal plan yet?
Jan - Yes, diane, I can see that. I used to spend vacations in Eugene with my aunt.
brad - maybe ADHD, Kathy, I've always thought that of him
Jan - Erin, go to that hotel in Eugene
Erin - Good point Jan
MIchelle/3/OR - my mom lives in Eugene.
diane - lol, jan
Erin - Why don't we all go and eat bagged salad and ho-hos
Jan - Sounds good to me, Erin. Maybe Batman can join us
judy3ca - Kim, yup! And the best part, daughter registered for her classes today (on computer) and she got all 4 classes!!! Hooray. There were only 4 slots of Calculus left in her time frame, so she was sweating. How about you?
naneb - a friend of mine taught John Grisham's daughter
Kim/K1/Ca - Actually, the I.R.A. conference is in Portland next March. Why don't we all go?
brad - lol erin, our yearly ESIA convention in Eugene Oregon
Erin - Jan, Kim, Judy anyone going to California Reading in Sacramento in Nov. My prinicpal says I can go
Kim/K1/Ca - If we put a little money aside, we can do it!!
MIchelle/3/OR - I actually lost a little weight while in Vegas. All that walking, and I hate paying for eating out a lot. It's sure not cheap like it used to be!
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh, Erin.......I would love to go!
Jan - naneb, now THERE'S a connection!
Erin - Plus you had to chase after the Air Force pilots Michelle
kathyb - Yes, ADHD for sure. But, he is really putting his past problems behind him to help kids.
naneb - that is a long way for me to go, Kim
brad - ERin, we need to think of some instructionally valuabale project to do with all those empty salad bags
MIchelle/3/OR - Kim! Yes, great idea!
MIchelle/3/OR - funny...i got a form in the mail about being a presenter for that conference.
Erin - Dead characters in a plastic bag
Kim/K1/Ca - Danny registered online while up there for orientation.......... we don't know yet if he "got" them. The registration is more "request" not live until the last minute.
judy3ca - Michelle, I think I'm going to get to go!!!! We could meet in real life!!!!!!!!
brad - What conference, Michelle?
Jan - I lived in the same town as John Wayne! His daughter was at my school
diane - the ira, michelle?
Kim/K1/Ca - What presentation... MIchelle? Judy and I can be your gophers.
brad - what would you present on?
Erin - Should I pass on CRA and go to IRA?
Erin - She would present on dioramas of course
judy3ca - Kim, that's exciting--not knowing. At least it's all so organized now. Chelsea even knew ahead of time which classes were "impacted." (J)
MIchelle/3/OR - yeah. weird, huh?
MIchelle/3/OR - nothing...it must have been a mistake.
Jan - Go to IRA, if you have a choice!
MIchelle/3/OR - and you would bring the lettuce to throw?
Kim/K1/Ca - Jan, will you go?
Erin - Can anyone else go to IRA?
brad - ok, kim will bash me, but what are we talking as far as cost?
Jan - Probably not, November is a busy month
Erin - I was thinking that too brad.
MIchelle/3/OR - I'm going to present about the current research accepted by the ESIA
judy3ca - When is IRA again?
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad can bring HoHo's we can take turns letting him sleep on the couches in our room. Cuz he is so cheeap
brad - i'm in the boat with nan, that's a fur piece for me
Jan - ASCD will be in SF this year. March.
Erin - I'm going to speak about educational acronyms IAUOI
Kim/K1/Ca - It's in March......hang on
judy3ca - Jan, you're coming HERE?????
brad - Good one, Michelle. I'd come.
Jan - Michelle, that will attract a throng of people
diane - well...given that i am in hillsboro, i can't imagine not going
MIchelle/3/OR - we could do a group presentation...then we all get in free
Kim/K1/Ca - IRA is Mar 9-11 in Portland
Erin - Wait that's a great idea Michelle!
Erin - What's the website so we can get a price? or do you know?
brad - That's state testing month around here. I'll never "get to go."
judy3ca - Wait a minute, I'm pretty sure I'm going to the one in Sacramento in November because I want to hear Vicki Spandel and my Lit Coach is giving me a reward. Is anyone else going?
Jan - We are thinking about it. I'd rather wait until next year when its in New Orleans. It will depend on what ASCD expects us to do in connection with the book.
Kim/K1/Ca - maybe reading.org?
Erin - Judy I'll go to whatever one some of you are going to . Let me know
brad - Could you see us all in N'awlins?
Kim/K1/Ca - Judy......... I will go if my new principal okays it. I think she will.
brad - I'll bring the beads!!!
MIchelle/3/OR - New Orleans is almost as interesting as Vegas
diane - ahhhh....jumbalaya and gumbo
Jan - I think New Orleans should be the site for the ESIA convention as well
judy3ca - Kim and Erin, oh, how exciting! My Lit Coach practically promised me I could go to Sacramento. Kim, you could visit sonny boy, too.
Kim/K1/Ca - Judy, I need to join the CRA! I never did........just the IRA
Jan - And mint juleps!
Kim/K1/Ca - Can I bunk with you and your lit coach?
MIchelle/3/OR - I've only been to the ORA conventions...never the IRA.
naneb - New Orleans is near me
judy3ca - Kim, LOL, I don't belong to either one. I have to trust my Lit Coach to keep me updated. I imagine a whole group from my school will go.
brad - I vote on an ESIA convention I'm AUOI
Erin - hold on wrong color brb
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh wait......maybe Erin and I can share a room. I don't snore.
naneb - We could have somekind of fun in N'awlins!!
Jan - Here come the acronyms!
naneb - I know a wonderful inexpensive hotel right off
judy3ca - Kim, um, we just go for the day. Let's see what we can work out.
Kim/K1/Ca - YUP, you said it naneb! We sho could
naneb - bourbon Street
Erin - Kim neither do I. I'm ready to go
Jan - I agree, Nan! The ambiance suits our group!
brad - I'm presenting on "Dioramas and Decor: Finding Uses for that Sugar Cube Mission."
Erin - Plus we could go together. We're somewhat close
naneb - I live 90 minutes from there
MIchelle/3/OR - so, only diane is going to the Portland one?
Erin - Brad, now now, you forgot the coffee cans
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh that's right......you are so close! I could stay with my sis if I have to but the drive into downtown is rather unappealing.
diane - how about 101 uses for a shoe box
Jan - 90 minutes from New Orleans? How exciting!
diane - sniff
Erin - Reading response and recycling
MIchelle/3/OR - I can do cereal boxes then
naneb - Unless you have teenagers who think that is the place to go!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Now, wait, diane...........you never know.
Jan - I could dredge up our old sugar cube mission.
brad - LOL, Erin, I"ve actually seen a book entitled, "Teaching with Trash."
Kim/K1/Ca - I thought it was composting in the back yard, Jan.......
judy3ca - Kim, no kidding, I just don't do that drive. Normally we leave early in the morning...I'm sure we can work something out. Would you be driving or flying?
Jan - I'm sure it's in the garage with the rest of the dioramas.
Erin - I saw a mission made out of Legos. Talk about authentic. I felt as if I were there
naneb - I think I wrote that book in another lifetime!!
Kim/K1/Ca - LOLOLOL Erin......... Legos.........
Erin - I think I would fly...how about you Kim?
naneb - LOL@Erin
Kim/K1/Ca - Probably driving...........
Jan - A mission out of LEGOS?! Now, that is really something. No ants, either.
brad - seriously jan, did you find any research related to pudding letters?
judy3ca - Erin, are you in SoCal, too?
Erin - If you drive would you go with someone for your district or I would be willing to drive if I had someone to go with
Kim/K1/Ca - I don't know Erin.......such a hassle to get in and out of the airport these days.............
Erin - I agree Kim
brad - You people and your large states. . . sheesh
Erin - Yes judy, Santa Clarita
Jan - Erin, where do you live?
Kim/K1/Ca - Erin, we could drive together. Even if someone from my district went, there would be room.
Kim/K1/Ca - I told you I grew up in Newhall/Saugus, right Erin?
Jan - I just got back from a meeting in Valencia!
brad - there will be no living with them now, nan, if they all meet up without us
Erin - Yes. Right down the street from me
Erin - Jan, that 's right where I am.
Kim/K1/Ca - JAN! You were in Valencia and didn't CALL me? (sniff)
diane - i'm feeling the same way, brad...lol
Erin - Jan, I'm crying too
brad - Valencia. They make good oranges
MIchelle/3/OR - I agree, brad.
naneb - that is the truth, brad, just listen to them, they forgot all about us!!
Erin - Jan I live in Valencia
Jan - It was actually in May, before I knew you lived there. I go there from time to time. BTSA likes it for state meetings
diane - it's as if they were all talking in acronyms!
brad - send me some oranges
MIchelle/3/OR - well...come to Oregon, brad and nan....
judy3ca - nan and brad, we could never forget you!
Erin - Let me know the next time
Kim/K1/Ca - Sorry you guys..............forgive?
brad - All this east coast/west coast debate!! Can't we all just get along?
Jan - Erin! Next time I go, we will have to get together. We stay in that classy hotel there.
naneb - just cuz we don't live in California, y'all are going to fall into the ocean anyway!!
diane - wellll...okay
Erin - Kim I will make sure to stay in touch with you about CRA. I think it would be a blast
Erin - There's a classy hotel here?
naneb - I am south coast much better anyway!!
judy3ca - Erin, ROFLOL!
Erin - At least we have an ocean to fall into!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Which classy hotel? By the freeway? Oh brother........
naneb - I have an ocean too!! gulf of Mexico is ocean!!
Jan - Yes, it's a Marriott, I think. New, buy a small shopping center with Borders.
brad - besides, who wants to live in some large dirty state where they don't even have bottomless buckets of crab or ho ho's for that matter!!
Erin - LOL Kim
MIchelle/3/OR - we have ocean, too. so there
brad - Pardon me, but Lake ERie is one of the world's largest freshwater lakes
naneb - ROFLMAO!!! this is so silly!!
diane - in fact, michelle, i was at the ocean yesterday...gorgeous!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh Michelle.......do you EVER! The most bee yu ti ful ocean!
Erin - Hey our buckets have bottoms so we get something to eat. Those durn bottomless ones are useless
brad - (although I don't live by Lake Erie)
MIchelle/3/OR - and, it's not even on fire
brad - Characters in a bucket
naneb - Well, I saw the ocean today kindof yucky and gray looking!!
Erin - Lakey shmakey. The ocean rocks!
Jan - Not by the freeway, you go off the freeway and through some horrible detour which is why I am not exactly sure where it is.
MIchelle/3/OR - like the rest of our state.
diane - ooo...i wonder if the dioramas would show geographic points of origin
judy3ca - This is sooo wonderful, my friends, I am really truly laughing out loud.
brad - I HAVE BUCKEYES (now you feeling salty)
Kim/K1/Ca - You got a mule named Sal, Brad?
Erin - No but we could do salt dough maps of the US'
diane - well...actually michelle, the southern oregon ocean is getting close to being on fire!
naneb - Now, I have made one of those!! Erin
brad - SALT DOUGH MAPS ROFLMAO LOLOLOLOL\
Erin - Well we have those Valencia oranges you mentioned
judy3ca - Any chance you'd want to mix that salt dough in some of my cans?
Erin - No I prefer to mix it in plastic salad bags
brad - with a few Valencia oranges??? ROFLMAOPMP
diane - too funny, judy...what are you going to do with those cans?
naneb - could even make a mission or two to go on the map
brad - too stupid
judy3ca - Diane, I have no clue--many cans now sitting in garage.
diane - you could make ice cream in a can...
Jan - I can whip out a salt and flour map of Calif.faster than I can ragout
brad - is anyone's spouses looking at them like they are soooo stupid right now?
Kim/K1/Ca - Yeah.....Jan KNOWS California, baby!
Erin - Very much LOL brad
naneb - my kids made ice cream in a can one summer, it was a big hit with them
naneb - my husband went to bed shaking his head
Kim/K1/Ca - As a matter of fact, yes...........Dustin asked if we talked about him yet.........
brad - and then finding it real hard to explain we're fighting about salt maps, oranges, and freshwater lakes
Erin - My spouse isn't home to see
MIchelle/3/OR - i had my 1st graders make ice cream in baggies. fun and messy.
diane - brad, mine just shakes his head at me....sort of a patronizing gesture
Erin - My son is next door at a birthday party
judy3ca - Well, it would probably have to be coffee ice cream.
Jan - Every observation I had one year was ice cream in a bag
Kim/K1/Ca - ...and Brad's mule named Sal.
MIchelle/3/OR - my son is at his dad's.
diane - that seems odd, jan
brad - Real nice pair of mules. From payless
Jan - What is the inst value of ice cream in a bag?
brad - do what, Jan?
judy3ca - ROFLMAO!!!
naneb - I had an observation one year without students
MIchelle/3/OR - we did the ice cream because when I read Charlotte's Web, I found out that none of my kids had ever had homemade ice cream before.
Erin - No it's ice cream characters in a cereal box
Erin - What was being obseved?
Kim/K1/Ca - Dan came in and asked Dustin, "you get the mail today?" Dustin says, "No dad, I've been unconscious on the kitchen floor." Hubby doesn't miss a beat. "so you didnt' get the mail today?"
diane - changing states of matter?
MIchelle/3/OR - your prep period?
brad - jan, please go further. YOu observed lessons on ice cream in a baggie??
naneb - diane, is quick!! a sign of a good teacher!!
brad - lol kim
kathyb - We make Bread in a Bag, it is a state fair winner!
Kim/K1/Ca - ....and I am over here LMAO...........
Jan - It was a science class. I don't know what the objective was other than keeping the lid on the kids while the ice cream was brewing.
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad makes the world famous "Ho Ho's in a Bag."
brad - Can you really show changing states of matter?
naneb - No, I taught Life skills and my kids were putting the chairs out for the pTA meeting, one of their many jobs, the principal said, Just tell me what you were going to do" so I did and he wrote it up
brad - mule-flavored
Jan - Yes, it was the rage one year. Everyone did it for their observation. It replaced the graphing of M&Ms.
diane - hey, i had a zinger the other day...is that close to a ho ho?
Kim/K1/Ca - Actually, it's done with partners. Each partner gets ONE Ho and ONE bag.
brad - fairly close, diane. you can't be serious, jan
Erin - LOl Jan
Jan - Counting the eyes in a potato was big one year, too.
judy3ca - Jan, you're joking, right?
naneb - LOL!!!
Erin - Graphing Valentine hearts another winner
brad - I'm bringing ho ho's to the convention. I'm shocked at your all's cultural ignorance.
Kim/K1/Ca - Hey, that was my first ever student teacher observation, Jan. M&M graphing. No lie.
MIchelle/3/OR - are you serious, jan?
brad - cake
Erin - Kim, brad brings up a good point. We have to make sure to have lots of snacks
Jan - Oh, no, not joking! You can't believe some of the lessons I see!
brad - sorry, ROFLMAO
Kim/K1/Ca - I am tellin' ya.........everyone brings ONE HO and ONE BAG.
Jan - Yep, I've had the valentine hearts. Also the colors of Easter eggs.
MIchelle/3/OR - wow, no wonder I've always gotten rave reviews on my observations.
brad - I had this long post, and somehow it deleted and all that came out was, "cake."
diane - jan, have you ever thought of writing a humorous book of lessons you have observed? it might be a riot, if it weren't too depressing that is
kathyb - Brad, at my school we sell Ho-Hos for 25 cents as a fund raiser.
Jan - Did you know there are more pink Easter eggs than yellow in a bag?
Erin - LOL brad...was wondering about that
brad - i think so too, diane. tell us more, jan.
Kim/K1/Ca - It was a profound cake, Brad.
MIchelle/3/OR - when I was a sub, I always thought my job would make an excellent sitcom
judy3ca - Brad, and here I've been sitting trying to figure out the joke with a punchline, cake.
Erin - And the instructional value of that is what again Jan
MIchelle/3/OR - what? easter eggs come in a bag??
naneb - I use m&m's to teach ratio and percent
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes Jan....it's an AIMS thing, I think......
Jan - A book would be a best seller. Some of the lessons are really originals!
Kim/K1/Ca - that was my lesson, naneb!
diane - lol...i thought maybe cake was a new acronym you guys made up when i was down south!
naneb - I thought they came from the Easter Bunny
brad - LOL diane
Kim/K1/Ca - ......wait a minute. COUNTING eyes in potatoes?
Erin - No they come in cans
Jan - Yes, Michelle, the bunny puts them in there. It's easier to haul them around. LOL
judy3ca - ROFLOL!
brad - i think that could be okay, don't you jan? Just using m and m's as a manipulative to figure ratio and percent. Seriously
Kim/K1/Ca - NO
Kim/K1/Ca - WAY!
naneb - I can't wait until this chat is in the archive, someone will think we are all crazy
Jan - Counting eyes in pototoes. It was an AIMS lesson---had something to do with observation skills.
brad - Thank you Kim. That's what I was posting on that came out, "cake." Something about counting eyes in potatoes?
Erin - Whatever brad, we still don't get the "connection" between cake and potatoes
Kim/K1/Ca - I like AIMS stuff, Jan. What do YOU think?
Jan - They only graphed the M&Ms by color, More orange or more brown? No ratios or percentages.
brad - I thought AIMS lessons were okay though I've seen a few that looked good.
michelle/3/or - if they didn't think we are crazy from the chat 2 weeks ago, nothing would make them think that now.
naneb - we did ratios and wrote them as fractions and then as percents, division problems etc
Kim/K1/Ca - Here's the connection, Erin: POTATO Pan CAKE. It's a Jewish thing.
Erin - I agree Michelle. And by the way brad it was archived in all it's glory
judy3ca - Erin, you can't have your cake and potatoes, too.
Jan - Aims lessons have NO objective! They throw in everything but the kitchen sink.
michelle/3/or - I've done the Valentine heart graphing thing from AIMS when I taught 1st
Erin - Oh thanks for clearing that up for this Gentile girl brad
brad - Heavens to Mergatroid--Our silly acronym Valley talk was archived.
naneb - I think I missed that one, was that when I was in Cozumel? I have to go read it
Jan - What is this about cake. Did kids graph that, too?
michelle/3/or - but you turn it into a lesson
Kim/K1/Ca - I like the way most of them provide real, hands on experiences........much prep work, though.
Erin - It's a piece of cake and potatoes?
brad - I think so nan
judy3ca - Right, Jan, how many crumbs...
Erin - No they write a report about a cake and put the report on a cereal box. They then make a cake in a can
brad - So are AIMS ESIA endorsed or not? Seriously let's figure this out
michelle/3/or - oh no! now they know who's idea it was to create acronyms for ESIA
Jan - Kim, AIMS lessons are fine IF the teacher determines an objective and then picks the activities that are related to it.
brad - I witnessed one in intermediate on magnets that seems ESIA-worthy for the AUOI stamp
Kim/K1/Ca - I agree, Jan..........
Erin - Michelle we've been found out
Erin - But they seem to like the AUOI acronym
judy3ca - Where's Sadie???
Jan - Don't mention the crumbs. I'll see that all through October if the word gets out they can graph them.
brad - HEy, yeah, where's good ol' Sadie
Kim/K1/Ca - AIMS had this thing on pennies. WE graphed pennies, massed pennies, floated/sinked pennies, made penny rubbings, stacked pennies, counted pennies..................put water drops on pennies.
brad - When you get right down to it, you can just about graph anything, eh?
naneb - I found it!
Jan - I think Sadie is on vacation. She has been off the board all week.
Erin - I think AIMS are good if the students are able to make the connection they are supposed to. Do they understand ratio/percentage or just how to sort m&ms
michelle/3/or - don't look, nan!!
brad - We put water drops on pennies (but it was about water, not pennies)
Jan - Yep, I've seen the pennies lesson, too.
Kim/K1/Ca - And in the end, guess what? TWO of my munchkins still didn't know......................PENNIES!!!!!
judy3ca - Kim, ROFLOL!
Jan - Yes, Brad, and, believe me, they DO!
naneb - It is too late, Brad I love it when you said children need guidance,Lord help me not to beat them
Kim/K1/Ca - <<<<running, screaming from the room.....
brad - I love shrimp and pennies. They're those pasta things shaped like a tube, right?
Kim/K1/Ca - ..and this was after adding a PENNY PER DAY to our Calendar.......................(head in hands)
Jan - Kim, you have to give up those kindergarteners.
Kim/K1/Ca - <<<<<<<miserable, wretched failure.
brad - They do what Jan??
michelle/3/or - I can't find the archives for our chats.
judy3ca - Jan, would you like to come to my room and see boring discussions of text?
michelle/3/or - shrimp and pennies? never heard of it.
Jan - You should have tried a penny diorama.
Erin - click on the archive button to the left
brad - it's a graphing thing michelle. LOL
Kim/K1/Ca - My friend is an AIMS facilitator. She says after a week of training........they can't just eat their lunch. They have to graph it and mass it.
Erin - it's under book talk
judy3ca - How many pennies in one can? 2 cans?
brad - Rofl, kim
Erin - A mission out of pennies...what agreat idea
michelle/3/or - i did.
Kim/K1/Ca - Are pennies characters?
michelle/3/or - what's the title?
Jan - I LOVE boring lessons about text! Better than ice cream in a bag.
judy3ca - Regis Philbin recorded Pennies From Heaven.
brad - I have seen a picture frame made of cigarette packs but a mission of pennies. That TAKES THE CAKE!! lolololol
Erin - I just found it under 7/19
Kim/K1/Ca - I hear ya, Jan......I love it when the principal walks in and the kids and I are discussing a book...............scrumptious.
Jan - A mission from M&Ms might be an idea, too.
diane - lol judy
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad you lyin' sack of potatoes.......
brad - Thanks, Judy, that takes care of the musical/rhythmic intelligence in our penny unit
judy3ca - Oh, shoot, no respectable M&M would last long enough to be graphed or made into a mission in my room!
Erin - When I did a reading lesson and read part of a book out loud my principal told me she doesn't want to see me read but teach. Even though I was doint think alouds and having children contribute
Kim/K1/Ca - THAT was the problem, Judy! No "musical intelligence" stuff! (smack!)
diane - you guys are cracking me up
brad - erin, that's just sad
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh jeez, Erin.................
brad - honest, kim. Cross my heart, hope-ta and all that
Erin - Michelle did you find it?
diane - oh erin, i'm sorry...do you still have the same principal?
judy3ca - Poor Erin, that's terrible. Even my principal gets a read-aloud.
Jan - That's probably true. One kid I had ate all the beans I used for counters. They were at least 20 years old.
michelle/3/or - oh, I see..the title is "focus sessions" that's funny!
Erin - Yes, but she doesn't observe me anymore the VP does and he understands more what I am doing
brad - jan, lol
Kim/K1/Ca - Erin, quote research........
michelle/3/or - these are focus sessions?
judy3ca - Jan, ROFL
Kim/K1/Ca - Jan, drive up to Erin's school and smack him. Please.
Jan - Erin, that's unbelievable!
brad - Usually when you quote research, their eyes just glaze over, and they nod their head
michelle/3/or - I bought $11 worth of M&M's while in Vegas!
Jan - There are a few principals out there just like Erin's.
michelle/3/or - they are so cool! White, cream, purple, lavendar...
Erin - We've agreed to disagree the principal and I . She still thinks I do a great job, just doesn't understand where I'm coming from completely
Jan - Michelle, you are really set for graphing!
brad - graph them michelle
diane - michelle, why? do they have good deals on m and m's in vegas?
Kim/K1/Ca - Can you smack all of them, Jan? Pretty please.........
naneb - Hmmmm! like this is just toooo cool dude!
judy3ca - Michelle, I knew we had a lot in common! I adore M&Ms.
Erin - I have to go on record as saying I love my principal because she does allow me the freedom to teach in this way.
brad - so how bout them book reports?
diane - judy, are you a purist or do you like the m and m varieties?
Erin - That M&M place is so cool Michelle. I brought back all different colors too
Jan - Yes, Judy, but to EAT, not graph!
Erin - brad you troublemaker
Kim/K1/Ca - (Homer drool) l a v e n d a r M&Ms............
michelle/3/or - no way! they are practically made out of gold! they were $8 per pound.
naneb - I don't think my principal thinks I teach but I do keep them in the room and out of the office
brad - nan sounds like she's getting AUOI
judy3ca - I don't know how much my principal gets, but he does understand that the kids are "engaged." (J)
Erin - Is nan reading that archived chat? How embarrassing
naneb - been reading that chat, I think it is contagious!!
michelle/3/or - I missed whatever erin said about her principal
brad - wait a minute!! we teach?? I just thought we came herre to talk about uses for containers and the food therein.
Erin - Nan please don't think less of us because of that chat
Jan - Judy, that's a step in the right direction!
judy3ca - Brad, ROFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Kim/K1/Ca - Erin likes her principal. I advised Jan to smack her principal. Erin says NO to smacking principal ..... they agree to disagree..........about principles.
naneb - I am now AUOI
brad - jan, what is the worst excuse for a lesson you've observed? (Not necessarily the worst for other reasons)
michelle/3/or - my face is red because it was me who suggested the acronyms.
judy3ca - Jan, seriously, it is. I honestly think he likes to listen to me read out loud, LOL
Erin - Michelle I said she didn't like me reading aloud during an observation but I still love her becasue even though she doesn't get what I'm doing she gives me freedom to do ti
Erin - Good use of homophones KIm
Jan - Okay, Nan, what is AUOI? Is it good or bad?
Jan - Judy, that's funny!
Erin - And did you find out what we thought about synthesis?
michelle/3/or - I thought you knew, Jan.
naneb - It is definetly Good!
Erin - By the way Jan, you caught onto us very quickly
brad - Did she have to know what a homophone was though, to actually make good use of them?? That's the real question.
Kim/K1/Ca - Can I be AUOI?
naneb - except I can't spell
Jan - I did? when?
michelle/3/or - did we say, erin? i do remember the plaid phonics books.
Kim/K1/Ca - Homophone, homograph..............homosimpson
Erin - No but if she had her spelling poster up in her room it would help
diane - okay, you guys, i have to \\
judy3ca - Oh, Michelle, I remember the plaid phonics books--gosh, now I feel old!
brad - you have to two squiggly slanted lines?
naneb - I though that was homosapien
Kim/K1/Ca - ((diane)) sleep well.......
michelle/3/or - i found one while cleaning house last week.
michelle/3/or - bye, diane.
Erin - bye diane
naneb - I have some plaid phonics books, they still make them
diane - lol, brad, i meant to type "go"...don't know how those lines got there...
Jan - Bye, diane
naneb - I got them from a vendor
brad - Jan, have you found any plaid phonics books in your cleaning??
diane - night all!
Kim/K1/Ca - LOL....I thought // meant something profound...............
Erin - Jan, when you continued to relentlessly question each of us individually about synthesis. I felt like I was in a cell with a single lightbulb swinging above me
brad - nite, diane
naneb - they actually have teacher's editions and everything
judy3ca - Night all, I've had tremendous fun tonight. You are all very witty!
michelle/3/or - i don't think Jan would allow one in her house.
Jan - That's the only thing that wasn't stored in my garage
brad - Profound. Like cake.
Erin - bye judy take care
naneb - night, judy
Kim/K1/Ca - (((judy)))))))
michelle/3/or - during that chat, we DID decide that ESIA would not endorse plaid phonics books....see, we said something educational
Jan - Synthesis will do that to you, Erin!
Erin - Seriously, we have to decide what we will post to the person who wants to know about monthly book reports
Kim/K1/Ca - Somebody asked about monthly book reports?
brad - exactly erin. I'm trying to get this rowdy group settled to more serious matters.
Kim/K1/Ca - ....or are we being tweaked?
michelle/3/or - was that a new thread, or on the Diorama one?
Erin - Kim look on the chatboard. I about died after the whole dioramama thing
michelle/3/or - brad.....whatever
Erin - No really new thread
Jan - I was hoping one of you would respond about the book reports. I don't think I'm up to that one.
Kim/K1/Ca - <<<<<<<head slamming on the table.........
brad - it's at bottom of diorama thread. a serious question. perhaps from same person who yelled at me that dioramas were NOT evil
Erin - See it must be real if Jan is mentioning it.
michelle/3/or - and it's a serious question? like they don't know what we might think?
Kim/K1/Ca - ouch
michelle/3/or - I REALLY need to read the thread....
brad - ERin, Diorama Mama?
Erin - No I am the character in a can matriarch
michelle/3/or - maybe i can respond... I'm fresh.
Erin - Go for it Michelle but read the diorama posts first
brad - Isn't it clear by now we're out for rigorous teaching and learning?? I guess some teachers are still unsure as to what that means
Erin - I lauged when Jenny/BC talked about dioramas
Jan - I'm afraid it's a serious question. I don't want to get yelled at, either.
naneb - the one from Haley?
michelle/3/or - oh, erin, I will. I'm very intrigued.
Erin - Yes, nan
Kim/K1/Ca - I rank them right up there with A.R........ I always open a CAN of worms when I "go there."
brad - I did too, JennyBC. I wasn't really talking to her because I thought she might be a snert
Erin - She sounds like she is interested in why we think the way we do
michelle/3/or - I'm so relaxed from the trip...I don't care what people say to me right now.
Jan - Don't mention anything about book reports being evil.
michelle/3/or - I avoid the AR discussion
Erin - Jan LOL
naneb - we can handle snerts, brad
Erin - What's a snert
brad - Kim, you are AUOI with worm-can opening
Erin - I avoid the AR discussion also
Erin - Don't want to go there
Kim/K1/Ca - NO! Don't use "evil" or "forbidden."
Jan - Do we know WHY we think like we do, Erin?
naneb - snerts are kids pretending to be teachers who come to cause trouble
michelle/3/or - ok....and I'll figure out why when i read...
Kim/K1/Ca - Okay...what's AUOI? Tell me...............(<<<<<<<<<<<<stamping foot)
Jan - Roger wanted me to post some numbers about dioramas so he could do some computing. I didn't understand one word of the question so am not answering it.
Erin - thank you
naneb - read the chat from July 19
michelle/3/or - all up on it, kim
brad - I am actually receiving a large volume of emails from another ring I belong to about "What do you do for your Book-It program?" Don't get me started. . .
Erin - All up on it. Brad brought it up a couple of weeks ago and we acronymed it
Erin - Book-it what is there to do
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh no, Jan............... did I miss THAT one?
brad - LOL, Jan. I thought the same thing. Hold your thoughts close to your bodice
Erin - Roger confuses me
michelle/3/or - numbers about dioramas?
naneb - I think Roger confuses himself
Kim/K1/Ca - <<<<running around in circles, screaming, BOOK IT!!!!!!
brad - I'd like to see that kim
Jan - LOL, Erin, I can't imagine why you would say that!
michelle/3/or - he confuses me sometimes too.
Erin - I know that I only read books if my husband gives me a pizza certificate
Kim/K1/Ca - Too bad I don't have a Web Cam........then you could.
brad - <<<<running around in circles, screaming, "Roger!"
Kim/K1/Ca - LOL Erin........exactly
Jan - Did any of you see Roger's question? It makes no sense--at least not to me.
michelle/3/or - lol kim.
brad - Was that a question? I thought someone threw a dictionary at the screen and it stuck.
Kim/K1/Ca - I didn't see the question. But I will read it. S l o w l y.............
michelle/3/or - i remember when i was a kid i loved to read, then they started giving reading incentives and i began thinking "maybe I'm not supposed to like reading?"
Jan - I saw a question mark; that's why I'm assuming it was a question.
Erin - drop in on this board periodically to see what can be applied to my math classes. This
michelle/3/or - sometimes it helps me if i read Roger's questions backwards.
Kim/K1/Ca - I always get the feeling Roger sits at home with this giant actuarial table. And computes all the things people say into little categories.
Erin - Sorry I meant to post part of Roger's post
naneb - We have a big push to do AR, my principal does not expect my sped kids to really do it so..... we don't
brad - good for you nan. I didn't mean to encourage him when I posted about his book the other day. I really was interested.
Kim/K1/Ca - OH! Yes.........about dioramas being aids to visualization?
michelle/3/or - my principal is big into AR, and so are the second grade teachers. sigh.
Erin - Just read Roger's post. I have no clue. But I think he agrees with us
Jan - Some schools where I work are starting AR. Wisely, I kept my mouth shut about the purchase.
brad - I know what AR is, but what exactly does it do, per se? I ask because I think we're getting it.
michelle/3/or - I hate that they waste so much money buying those tests.
Kim/K1/Ca - I really like Roger. I think the man must be a HOOT to teach with. You probably never know if he is serious or not. His room must be like a well oiled machine. Can you imagine ANY kid acting up?
naneb - my district has spent a huge amount of money for AR and accelerated math too
michelle/3/or - it asks "comprehension" questions about books.
Jan - Erin, you think he AGREES with us? Really? Hmmm...I never thought of that possibility. I thought he was saying we should look to the future (or was it the past) about dioramas.
michelle/3/or - ""comprehension"" deserves 2 sets of quotation marks.
Kim/K1/Ca - If his principal disagrees with him...........he just confoozles them. Brilliant, really.
naneb - it asks multiple choice literal questions
brad - I know, when you think of the plodding amounts of money being wasted away on frivolous non-ESIA endorsed programs, . . . sigh. . . (think of the ho ho's you could buy)
naneb - I think Roger was responding very tongue in cheek about dioramas
michelle/3/or - and what's worse...sometimes the answers are impossible to answer, or they have them wrong in the test.
Erin - You are placed into a reading level and read books at your zone of proximal development. You then take tests and should earn an 85 % to be doing well. YOu earn points for the tests
Kim/K1/Ca - Remember my post about "comprehension " questions? About Bill the Shrem? THAT is my feeling about A.R.
michelle/3/or - exactly, kim
brad - I love Bill the Shrem. He's educationally sound.
naneb - My sped kids test at 2nd grade level but get B's in reg ed 6th grade science and social studies, the test is stupid
michelle/3/or - our school doesn't do the "leveling" part of AR, though.
brad - Jan, why are you keeping suspiciously quiet?? thoughts??
Kim/K1/Ca - I mean.......yes. You have "reluctant readers" reading books on their fluency level. A good thing. But the TEST just sucks the life out of it.........................
naneb - they have to read boks in their ZPD as set by the STAR Reading test
Erin - He says we have an intuitive grasp of values beyond traditional orthodoxy and that he doesn't remember doing dioramas
michelle/3/or - the tests couldn't ask worse questions.
Jan - Wow! you guys are good at comprehending what Roger says. I never get one word of his messages. He emailed me once and I thought it was in some foreign language. I just never responded.
Kim/K1/Ca - I hafta shut up about A.R. I will be running in circles again.
naneb - I have to have my kids take the test 3 times a year but I will not push AR books, they can read anything they want
brad - orthodoxy?? isn't that for getting your whites whiter and your colors brighter?
Erin - I have to do the STAR test but don't do AR beyond that. I let them choose books within their level don't have to be AR
Kim/K1/Ca - That's a good thing............... Roger likes us! He REALLY likes us!
Erin - No it's the whitening strips for your teeth
naneb - I loved the part in his post about farming out the work of building the diorama to third world countries
michelle/3/or - i don't even tell the kids which books are AR books. my principal lets me get away with things she doesn't let others get away with, thank goodness.
Kim/K1/Ca - He posts cool graphics too.
Erin - or is it orthodoxy jews non-orthodoxy jews
Erin - nan lol
brad - that was my fave part too nan.
Kim/K1/Ca - Yeah, that was good.....imbed a little economics into the lesson.....
Jan - Brad, I'm trying to concentrate on this brilliant conversation, read the archive to find out about the acronym and talking on the phone.
brad - so with AR comes a nice library of books?
Erin - Wow talk about multi-tasking
naneb - I could see one of Judy's kids paying someone across the obrder to build her mission!!
Kim/K1/Ca - No, it doesn't BRAD! Ch-ching!
Erin - ROFLMAO nan
naneb - brad, you have to buy the books and the tests
michelle/3/or - jan, we told you the acronym...
naneb - Now, you like that connection!!
michelle/3/or - ha ha!
brad - so, then, they expect you to adhere to the program with all these books that YOU buy??
Erin - Jan come on we'll help you what do you need to know?
michelle/3/or - lol at brad
Kim/K1/Ca - Sometimes you have the books. But not the tests. Or you get the tests on a disc with other tests. But you don't have the books.............
michelle/3/or - nice library of books?
Jan - Plus, the fumes from cleaning the tile are making me a little groggy.
brad - that's insane!! STop the insanity!! (whatever happened to her?)
brad - what if i refuse to get the books?
naneb - we actually have a class that every student takes devoted to AR
michelle/3/or - she was so iritating.
Erin - brad, then you cannot officially have an AR party at the end of the year and buy their incentives. DUH
brad - what if i graph judy's coffee cans instead and call that reading comprehension?
michelle/3/or - you probably already have some of them, brad.
Kim/K1/Ca - SO....you have to buy books to match the tests you DO have. Then you have to order a spcial disk of tests for the books you DO have.................Then you have teachers scouring their libraries for A.R. books..............and kids ONLY getting to read A.R. books.............
Erin - what if brad stops drinking coffee late at night and tries some herbal tea?
Jan - I'm rereading Roger's post. I think I need to bone up on the comprehension strategies.
michelle/3/or - they will have many of them in the school library.
naneb - you don't buy the books from them just the tests and you can make your own tests if you want, they have a new test called literacy tests that are more comprehension
Erin - Because the AR books have been blessed by the AR fairy
brad - who buys the ho ho's?
Erin - Many of them are good books
michelle/3/or - brad does
michelle/3/or - for everyone
brad - for my incentives of course
michelle/3/or - yes. brad does
Erin - including those across the border building dioramas they love ho hos
brad - Why then, oh why, is this sweeping the nation?? Jan?
naneb - I actually found lots of tests online for the books I have
Kim/K1/Ca - Then you get some guru to load all the tests into all the computers inthe school. But the test that your litttle angel wants to take isn't on YOUR disc cuz it is new and somebody spilled coffee on it after loading onto their computer.
naneb - it is another perfect example of the quick fix and lots of PR
Erin - LOL Kim
michelle/3/or - exactly what nan said.
brad - again, how is this helping our students to read. In other words, what's their angle?? (
naneb - We have the tests on the server so they can be accessed by one and all
brad - ey?)
Erin - Jan have you figured out what Roger said yet
michelle/3/or - they call it testing "reading comprehension"
Kim/K1/Ca - You blow through cartrdiges and cartrdiges for the printouts..................everybody knows their LEVEL. "Hi I'm Brian. I'm a 4.2. How about you?"
naneb - the more you read in your ZPD the better you read, Brad
brad - has anyone successfully fought this and won?
michelle/3/or - yep...it's supposed to be a reading incentive thing
Jan - Still working on it, Erin. Perhaps its the tile grout whitener that is slowing my brain.
brad - Is that blood/alcohol level, Kim?
naneb - I will use it during my SSR block and if kids want to take a test they can
Erin - I'll try some more tomorrow Jan
michelle/3/or - like i said...I don't do it. So, I won for my own classroom
brad - it's amazing what we'll sit back and take as teachers
michelle/3/or - but the rest of the school has to do it. Baby steps.
Kim/K1/Ca - gggrrrrrrr............all those lovely Wright Group books.......levelled by A.R. and THRASHED by the kids cuz there tend to be so few titles in that level.............
Erin - I let kids take a test if they want to but don't demand it. some do it just for themselves and to go to the pizza party at the end of the year
Erin - Gotta go put my son to bed be back "in a flash" brad has been using so many catchy phrases I wanted to use one
michelle/3/or - if my kids ask, i let them take a test. but there is no extrinsic reward
brad - Michelle, you just up and refused?? What did principal say? How did you justfiy?
Kim/K1/Ca - Read him a story..but NOT an AR book, Erin
Jan - I'm off to clean the stuff off the tile before we are asphixiated. My dog's eyes seem to be rolling up into her head. Great senses of humor, you guys.
michelle/3/or - I refused. my principal says it's fine for me to not do it since whatever i do in my room is working. I get the highest reading results in the district.
michelle/3/or - bye, Jan.
naneb - I will read Maniac Magee to my class, they can take the test if they want when I am finished
brad - as measured by what michelle?
Kim/K1/Ca - Michelle <<<<<< sizzles!
michelle/3/or - the district compiles several measures..DRA and such. Also, the state tests in 3rd grade.
naneb - I don't really think AR is totally bad, the thing I don't like is that kids get where they will only read AR books
Kim/K1/Ca - That is the "extrinsic thing" working, naneb........
brad - what if the incentives weren't part of the package?
naneb - we did not even have rewards last year, but some teachers required a certain number of points
Kim/K1/Ca - But they are Brad..........."points."
michelle/3/or - my kids had extrensic rewards for reading in 2nd grade. They don't complain about not having them in 3rd grade. they probably figure that's just how it is in 3rd grade.
brad - Points-schmoints. YOu could points all day long; it means nothing.
naneb - this year we have kids set their goal for the nine weeks and meeting the goal is part of their grade
Kim/K1/Ca - ...what I don't like is kids having to "read for pleasure" and then answer a bunch of superficial questions.
brad - i thought AR wasn't supposed to be used to determine grades
naneb - we had kids taking tests under someone elses password and delberately missing questions so their ZPD did not go up
Kim/K1/Ca - Think about it. You read an article in Newsweek. Then you have to take a "test." Then you read a chapter from Faye Kellerman. Another "test." Then you read an eMail. Another "test."
michelle/3/or - my nephew who's in middle school has AR as a third of his grade!
naneb - we have this class, so they have to give a grade
brad - i was thinking that might happen nan. Not surprised to hear it does
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh yeah.........and some HIGH readers are prevented from reading "lower level" books.
naneb - we had this group of girls who would get mad at someone and use thier password and fail tests on purpose
Erin - ok i'm back
Kim/K1/Ca - Just doing some more AR bashing, ERin...............same o same o
Erin - Kim I was going to post the same thing.
michelle/3/or - really? how do they get their friends' passwords? kids give them out?
naneb - they only count if they are in their zone, that's why they purposely fail tests so they can read easier books
brad - That's it!! I just have to come up with my own program to sell to systems and get rich. How about "Accelerated Dioramas." With the Mission Supplement, I bet I could get all of California as a buy-in. (And maybe some of Texas.)
Erin - It's not bad to know your level but when it doesn't allow you to read anything else it nots ESIA approved
naneb - or they see them type them in, they are their library number
Kim/K1/Ca - The passwords are often their school enrollment number.................10987 or something....easy to look up.
naneb - you can take a test on a higher book, it can be read to or read with but the points are lower
Erin - For extra money districts could purchase the character in a can and cereal box reports supplements
Kim/K1/Ca - Hi to Chris, BTW.............jump onin
michelle/3/or - yeah, but my kids have never figured out anyone else's numbers.
Kim/K1/Ca - on in
Erin - All would require a 3 day inservice and a "binder full of valuable information"
michelle/3/or - they know their own....if they remember them from 2nd gr.
naneb - this is middle school they are much sneakier
michelle/3/or - ok...that makes sense.
brad - LOL on the binder, erin
Kim/K1/Ca - true on the binder, erin
naneb - we have a big inservice next week
brad - seriously, why are such a gullible profession?
Erin - Did Jan leave
Kim/K1/Ca - BRB PB
brad - -Kim's making Peanut Butter?
naneb - or something like that
Erin - I get upset not only that teachers are gullible but that there needs to be this feeling of we all need to get along. So nobody says anything
brad - I think one reason we fall for it is-- the lack of proliferation of best practice. What do you think?
michelle/3/or - we go back for 3 days of inservice on the 19th.
brad - Think about it. How much research do you see floating through your building?
naneb - exactly Erin, whenever someone wants to disagree at a faculty meeting they all look at me!! Like I am the only one willing to speak up
Erin - I think it goes back to our discussion on the chatboard about professionalism
brad - How often do you get together to discuss instruction?
Erin - There is a lack of proliferation about best practice becasue teachers don't read the research
naneb - all we discuss is test scores
brad - Naneb, I've been in that boat
michelle/3/or - this is "research" in my school....someone at lunch says "research says" or "studies show" but really have no idea what kind of research they are quoting.
brad - But do they even HAVE the research to read, Erin?
Erin - I am the one too Nan, that disagrees.
brad - True, nan, so true. True, Mich, so true
Erin - Good point, brad. It's not being brought in by the administration
Kim/K1/Ca - You are all correct................and I think we are all socializaed to "go along" and "get along" so we do.............to our peril.
brad - I fear going back next year "armed" with Jan and you all and snapping off at inopportune moments. "What studies show that?"
naneb - my problem is that I don't think I am taken seriously because I am a sped teacher
Erin - I fortunately or unfortunately, do not believe in going along all the time. I end up having people upset at me
brad - I'd hate to have to agree with you Nan, but I will
michelle/3/or - i say that a lot, brad. but a lot of people don't want to know!
Erin - I think I am that second teacher that Jan described
naneb - What could I know after all... how dare I try to tell them anything!!
Kim/K1/Ca - I hereby pledge to be instructionally sound and to sound off instructionally. WHO's With ME?
naneb - LOL@brad!!
brad - I can easily see falling into that category, erin
Erin - I second that KIM
brad - The environment I'm in is not conducive to improvement for a myriad of reasons
michelle/3/or - I'm not taken seriously because I haven't been teaching 20 years yet.
brad - (Did I sound like Roger?)
naneb - I think I may be that second teacher too, I am trying really hard not tobe!! I have felt really ostracized since I became NBCT
Kim/K1/Ca - I am not confrontational, but I do spout the research. And I know what I am talking about. ...............we shall see.
Kim/K1/Ca - I think you need to change buildings Brad
brad - Michelle, think of me, last year was my first year under contract
brad - Those children need me Kim
Erin - My district has its pet teachers that are in charge of everything. Very hard to get a foot in the door.
Kim/K1/Ca - They are jealous and overwhelmed by you Nan............. they react the only way they think they can.
brad - Besides, I think I have a small grassroots following at the grade level I'm moving to
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, they do, Brad...........
Erin - I did the proficiency summer school testing and voiced to my curriculum director how low these students are . I may be able to be in charge of designing the intervention summer school for next year
naneb - I think they see me as a threat, I really tried to stay out of the lounge and to keep my mouth shut, stop laughing brad!!
Erin - Of course I will be turning to all of you for help
brad - IF I weren't there, I shudder to think of the education they'd receive (and some DO)
Kim/K1/Ca - If you are as good at keepin' yor mouth shut as BRAD, Nan...........I can see theproblem.
brad - I am well liked at my school, and seen as non-confrontational (they don't know me very well, do they?) But
Kim/K1/Ca - WE are here for each other. We must perservere.
brad - I can be insiduous
Erin - OK I am now going to put myself to bed. goodnite. Don't forget to post Michelle.
naneb - I am well liked too, I think, just seen as someone who speaks her mind
Kim/K1/Ca - Small victories. We are doing the right thing.
michelle/3/or - I am well-liked too, it's just a couple of people who would prefer it if I "knew my place".
Erin - Oh had to repsond Nan. Good point. I think I would describe myself that way too
brad - I now have that position after a few things that happened the final weeks last year. KIm knows this
naneb - my principal likes me so that is good
brad - Your place, Michelle, is first in the district in reading.
Kim/K1/Ca - Well, mine RECRUITED me............I hope she knows what she is in for.............hee hee hee
naneb - I helped get rid of the last principal by documenting some illegal activity, so I do have a reputation at central office
brad - something tells me she doesn't kim
Kim/K1/Ca - ((erin))
michelle/3/or - we did the Relay for Life in June...and one of those teachers absolutely refused to walk with me! crazy, eh?
brad - ooh, nan, you're a narc!! LOL
naneb - Proud of it too!! She was Crazy!
brad - who are these people michelle?
naneb - it was special ed stuff
Kim/K1/Ca - Loony Toones..
michelle/3/or - oh, this is a 4th grade teacher. I love 4th grade but would never teach it at that school, with her.
naneb - I was going to not sign my contract and the sped director asked me to stay and find the evidence so I did
brad - adn why does she dislike you so?
Kim/K1/Ca - Erin...........you still here?
Kim/K1/Ca - GOOD for you , Nan!
naneb - she must have left, her name will stay up if she didn't logout
michelle/3/or - I don't know if there's a reason...although I vaguely remember something. She's crazy, though. It may have to do with my impatience with her whining.
Kim/K1/Ca - I need to get off the 'puter.............Dustin foaming at the mouth with withdrawals.................sad.
brad - kim, are any of your fears about recent events allayed?
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, BRad............thanks.
naneb - I need to go t obed, it is 12:30
brad - it's a little scary
michelle/3/or - well...I need to go read the board.
brad - yeah, we all should go night-night
Kim/K1/Ca - ((nighty night, all))) you da best.
naneb - good night everyone
michelle/3/or - so...I'll see you there later
brad - michelle, read up on dioramas and call us in the morning with Erin's Advil
Kim/K1/Ca - congrats on the house, brad....
Kim/K1/Ca - ((smooches))
