Erin -
Sharon - hideeho!
cavey - Sweet Home is that you?
Erin - Judy, I read that you're starting on you're planning for the beginning of the year. I'd love to hear what you are thinking of and trade ideas. e-mail teachaug@aol.com
judy3ca - (((Sharon)))
Erin - Hi Sharon!
naneb - no, an old friend of hers was killed, they hadn't seen each other in a long time, but this girl called her not too long ago, right out of the blue
Marcia/1st/GA - Is that our Sharon?
Sharon - yeppers, marcia
naneb - ((((((((((((((((((Sharon)))))))))))))))
Erin - I'm vowing to get my room finished on MOnday and start my planning
naneb - I put my first grades in the gradebook today
Marcia/1st/GA - Well, long time no see!
Sharon - very true, marcia.... poppin' wheelies in the wheelchair yet?
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon, are you following the 4 blocks with doing the MOt strategies or maybe I should say do you think you will be able to?
Sharon - hugs to judy and nan, btw!
judy3ca - Erin, I just added you to my address book--that would be great. I'm jvmazur@attbi.com. It kinda sounds like I'm tackling too much, doesn't it?
naneb - Marcia, when I was in the wheelchair my boys would push me around the corner on 2 wheels
Marcia/1st/GA - No, but Big Raymond has me pretend braking with my feet and getting blisters on my hands trying to stop the wheelie things on the side when he pushes me!
Sharon - Well, let's say my WWW and writing blocks are intact..... the SSR and GR are being combined as we speak
Erin - No I was jealous you had your room done. I need an uninterrupted day.
Marcia/1st/GA - It's pretty scary when Raymond pushes me!
Marcia/1st/GA - What I am thinking of Sharon is the way they suggest doing GR in 4 blocks...
diane - judy, thanks so much...the sitton stuff arrived yesterday
Sharon - right now, i'm doing some indepth assessments and typing up literacy reports on all my children (why, oh why, did I promise my parents that literacy report????)
terry - judy do you use sitton?
diane - sharon, what info are you including in your literacy reports?
Sharon - it would work, marcia... but i just want to go back to some small group instruction because of all the grad courses i'm taking
naneb - marcia, that is how I am doing it, Before=modeling, During= shared practice, After=sharing of strategy use and of books
Marcia/1st/GA - They suggest doing re-reading the book for a different reason each day. However, in MOT I want to emphasize the same strategy. This is what I could never reconcile last year so pretty much dropped the 4 blocks way and stayed with MOT
judy3ca - Great, Diane. Do you think it's enough to get you started? I planned the first three days of spelling today, and realized I have no clue how long any of it will take. Terry--we're starting Sitton this year...but with no inservice. I'm trading Diane material for knowledge.
terry - ah, we had our 5 minute training today...it is learn as you go for me
Marcia/1st/GA - Judy, I couldn't plan until the Saturday night before school started. Really had a mental block about it.
diane - judy....it's definitely enough to get me started...makes me very curious for the inservice, though
Sharon - hi diane... assessment results for phoneme identification, letter recognition, blending, phonetic cue reading, decoding pseudowords, spelling (Clay dictation), QRI-3 word lists and passage comprehension
Erin - I feel like I want to do everything right away. I'm deciding how to start
Marcia/1st/GA - We use Sitton spelling. Was I supposed to be inserviced on it?
judy3ca - Marcia, I was getting that way, so I dove in. As you know, I've probably done too much with MOT, but I'm excited.
diane - terry...i'll have a half-day (i hope it's not all-day...i have work to do in my room still) inservice on sitton...i'll share what i learn
Erin - Sharon, what grade are you?
cavey - Erin I'm with you getting overwhelmed
terry - wow sharon that sounds like a LOT of work!
Marcia/1st/GA - My goodness, Sharon, how have you had time to get all the assessments done?
Sharon - erin, first grade here
terry - thanks diane
judy3ca - Erin, yes, that's it--but the really cool thing is that I looked at last year's plans and I did start right in....we did reading, math, and WW all on the first day.
Erin - Cavey, plus I;m in a unique situation with 60 students housed in two classrooms with three teachers.
diane - oh...i'm tired just thinking of it, sharon...and i'm still on vacation!
Sharon - i do two a day...it's my reader's workshop right now plus i do the early arrivers before school starts
Erin - The third teacher is coming down from sixth and is willing to be a glorified aide if that's what the other teacher and I want
cavey - Erin - do you all plan together?
Erin - Judy, I plan on starting right away also. I get bored if I don't
judy3ca - Erin, I didn't know that about the 3 teachers! Do you treat them as 2 classes?
Marcia/1st/GA - Okay, that makes me feel a little better. I am only getting about 2 done a day, but I amnot doing all those components either.
Erin - Cavey, We'll plan some things together but I don't think I can get them up to speed on the MOT, etc. I'll just have my 30 for Language Arts and the extra teacher will help on alternating days.
terry - jdy I know you said earlier, but when do you start?
Erin - Judy, It's supposed to be three classes but with the way the other teacher and I teach we've decided the third teacher will just alternate
judy3ca - Erin, right, why is all that cutesy stuff we used to do so boring now? I like that!
Sharon - well i don't do all tests for all students... like the one with weak phonemic awareness and letter recognition and no blending ability..... no need to QRI-3 him
diane - hi jan!
cavey - Hi Jan
diane - hi alta rose!
Erin - She's offered to grade papers...my least favorite job
Jan - Good evening, ESIA!
judy3ca - (((Jan)))
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hi everyone!
Grace/IL - Grace/IL
Sharon - hi jan
Erin - Hi Jan!!!!!!!!!!!!
diane - oh...i have an update on our new hire...
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hi Grace!
Sharon - hi alta rose
Marcia/1st/GA - what's QRI-3
Jan - Hi, Alta Rose
cavey - Hi Alta!!
Erin - Jan do you know what ESIA means since you're tossing it around?
Erin - Hi Alta
Sharon - grace... there you are.. i have a few questions for you!
judy3ca - Hi Alta Rose
Grace/IL - Ugh! It looked like I was bounced, typed in my name and look what I got. Hi All
diane - after 8 straight hours of interviewing for our sudden first grade opening
cavey - Jan This is a test
Jan - Yes, of course, I know what ESIA means---Sadie has drilled it into me.
Erin - LOL Jan
cavey - Grace it's very serene!
Marcia/1st/GA - do some of you work together?
judy3ca - Sharon, are they in the tub yet?
Jan - I'll think of it in a minute, Erin!
diane - we hired someone that had linda hoyt as a personal reference...she's totally up on the research and best practice in pedagogy
Grace/IL - What's serene. My life just turned upside down.
Sharon - not officially yet, Judy... they're book browsing in baskets at their desks during my assessments
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Jan, I was at a conference today, trying to explain our "synthesis" discussions to collegues!
Erin - Uh-oh Grace what happened?
Jan - Here it is! Educationally-Sound Ideas Association!
cavey - Hi Michelle
judy3ca - Wow, Diane, that's impressive. Did you like her, too?
Grace/IL - I'm going to go grab a different color.
Michelle/3/or - I am covered in paint presently. the color judy is, is all over me.
Erin - Wild applause as Jan gets it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
judy3ca - Sharon, I showed one of our first grade teachers your room and she raved!
Jan - Alta Rose, what was the reaction?
cavey - Whats up Grace I was talking about the green color?
diane - judy, she is fabulous!! her only trouble seems to be that in the past she was a lone wolf in her school...not a problem for us!!
judy3ca - Michelle--what did you paint?
Jan - Jan, bowing and blushing, thanks you, Erin.
Erin - Very feminine Grace.
Sharon - awwww... thanks, judy... i'm loving it! especially now with some of the kids touches added
judy3ca - Diane--how great!
Grace/IL - Just heard from my brother. His wife's cancer has moved to her liver.
Erin - Maybe we should call ourselves Lone Wolves Unite
Michelle/3/or - my uncle helped me transform a useless table into a bookshelf. I've been painting it and some other shelves in my room
Sharon - i'm so sorry to hear that, grace
naneb - Oh no, Grace I am so sorry!!
Erin - Oh Grace, I'm so sorry
cavey - Oh Grace so so sorry
Alta Rose / 1-2 - A school board official sitting at my table thought that we synthesize when reading when we put a variety of ideas together when reading. Kind of the same ideas that have already come up in our discussion.
diane - oh grace, i'm sorry to hear that
judy3ca - Jan, thanks for the nice comments on the board--I wish I could tell you how much they mean to me.
Marcia/1st/GA - I am so sorry to hear about that news, Grace
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Grace, I'm so sorry.
Erin - It seems like so many people I know are being diagnosed
Michelle/3/or - Grace, I'm sorry to hear that
Jan - Grace, what terrible news! I'm so sorry.
diane - erin, perhaps we are the lone wolves division of the esia
Grace/IL - It's been a ten year battle. Started with breast cancer after HRT. Just have to live with the consequences.
judy3ca - Michelle, do you like the color now? I'm also color-impaired.
Sharon - i just read that post, Judy... i feel the same way about you... i save your posts in a notebook
Alta Rose / 1-2 - HRT?
Grace/IL - So let's move on to more pleasant things. Someone had a question.
Michelle/3/or - My principal sent us all three articles we all have to read before school starts. It has to do with our new math curriculum. my question is, where did these articles, supporting the program, come from?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Oh, i know it now.
Jan - Judy, I just posted a couple more messages to you.
cavey - Prayers for your family Grace
Sharon - me, me, me, grace!
judy3ca - ((Sharon)) You guys must have sensed I had a terrible day and needed this! Sincere thanks!
Erin - Alta Hormone Replacement Therapy
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Yes, I figured it out as soon as I pressed Enter.
diane - sorry you had a terrible day judy...are you back yet
Grace/IL - Thanks, Cavey. We had a big party in June so we more or less all celebrated her life.
Michelle/3/or - Judy, when i went into school today, I found a Kinder teacher who is really good with color, and she said that it looks good to her. In fact, she said that I "raised the bar" for everyone. People are talking about my painting, i guess.
naneb - Judy, why was it so terrible?
Michelle/3/or - So, maybe I just need to get used to it.
judy3ca - Jan, is that an uh oh? I read the Madeleine one and the response to WW...is there more?
Jan - Oh, shoot, Alta Rose, your info rolled off just as I saw, "A principal who sat next to me..." I'll have to wait for the archive, I think.
Sharon - i have a little boy that has repeated kindergarten... a real sweetheart, but very weak in letter recognition and phonemic awareness... the top two indicators in reading success.... no blending ability exhibited... any suggestions for helping him get those letter recognitions down and improving his phonemic awareness?
judy3ca - Michelle, LOL, that's a riot! You don't see how great it is but they do.
cavey - okay I'm lost already
diane - lol, cavey
Jan - Judy, still more---this is the critical attribute of "care" which is driving me crazy.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Jan, basically he said we synthesize when we put ideas together when reading. He was a school board official.
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon, I use a technique called putting the sounds on a mountain. It will work for real short one syllable words.
judy3ca - nan, it was a very bad day because I don't understand my test scores--but it's a long story.
cavey - don't lol HELP
Grace/IL - Sharon, have you read my articles in the Gazette on "Teaching Gayle to Read?"
terry - Well guys I have finally made it to a chat, but am too tired to hang this week. Goodnight and enjoy!
Michelle/3/or - Cavey, I'm lost too.....not that that helps you.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Good night, terry!
judy3ca - Jan, phew, I can take that. I'm very willing to continue discussing care. I just didn't want you to take back what you said in the WW post.
Sharon - marcia... the blending was an oral test... i gave the sounds at half-second intervals... he couldn't identify any words
Marcia/1st/GA - bye Terry. Talk to you later.
judy3ca - Night, Terry!
diane - night terry!
Sharon - no, grace... how do i access it?
naneb - Sharon, there is a really good book "Reading Reflex" this is an orton gillingham type of hands on program to teach sounds and blending
Sharon - g'nite terry
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon, perhaps I misunderstood. I thought the child had trouble blending sounds together for words.
diane - i have a classroom library question for you all...
Grace/IL - I've found that if I start with two letters -- a & m -- and have the child trace the letters until she can recognize them, then say a-m very slowly, the segmenting will come.
Jan - Judy, I would NEVER take back what I said in the post!
cavey - I'm going to try and keep up with you diane
diane - how many books do you put out at a time? all of them? do you rotate titles through?
Sharon - nan, i thought orton gillingham method had been shot down in recent research... am i misinformed?
Michelle/3/or - great diane! I have a classroom library!
Grace/IL - There are several ways. Click on
Michelle/3/or - I put all of mine out.
judy3ca - ooooh, diane, I'm waiting with bated breath--I love library questions.
Grace/IL - ette" on the chatboards and it will take you to the latest one.
Sharon - yes, marcia... but these were sounds i gave him at half-second intervals
judy3ca - Thanks, Jan!
Marcia/1st/GA - What research, Sharon?
cavey - I rotate diane
naneb - this program from Readamerica has some pretty impressive numbers for success, it is used a lot with LD kids and language impaired for remediation
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Diane, I am in the process of reorganizing my classroom books. I have them sorted, in baskets, and those baskets out at all times. But I will rotate the books through a display rack.
Sharon - i have that in my plans, grace... it's nice to hear you recommend it
Grace/IL - naneb, Reading Reflex is really not Orton-Gillingham. It uses different grapheme structure.
cavey - Hi Suzanne!
Sharon - grace.... wait.... say the sounds or the letters?
diane - michelle, i have always done that in the past, but i find that kids get bored with the selection...plus i am out of space....must stop buying books!! lol
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hi Suzanne!
Grace/IL - Sharon, O-G is anything but shot down.
Michelle/3/or - I just bought a bunch more baskets and have been reorganizing my library. that's why i needed the extra shelves.
judy3ca - All of 'em in the kids' library. But I also put out a basket or two of "my" books each week to go with what we're doing.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Sharon, sorry, my brain is going a milllion directions. What did you say the problem is?
Marcia/1st/GA - I ahve always used OG with my resource kids.
Suzanne/tx/3 - just stopped in for a minute - had supply day today and i am bushed
diane - judy, how do you distinguish between "kid books" and "your books?"
Sharon - i'm looking for that research article now
Erin - I'm bummed. Gotta go!! We're leaving for the weekend in the morning and I HAVE to pack...even though I 'd rahter chat
diane - hi suzanne
cavey - Diane I must have spent a bazillion dollars this summer- that darn bookcloseouts
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Take Care, Erin!
Grace/IL - First say the sounds. Then ask the child what letters represent the sounds. Have him write the letters, the provide instant feedback.
Michelle/3/or - I've been having space problems....but I have a large classroom and made my library larger. I will highlight books during book talks that the kids haven't noticed. that keeps them from getting bored, i think
Erin - Bye all. Have a good weekend.
Michelle/3/or - bye, erin!
Jan - Goodnight, Erin
Suzanne/tx/3 - have a good weekend erin
diane - i'm with you, cavey, i have another set of books in my shopping cart...trying to decide if i really need them
cavey - bye Erin have a good trip
Grace/IL - Marcia, I adapted it for whole class instruction. It worked wonders, even with the strong kids.
diane - good night erin
judy3ca - Diane, oh man, the kids library is theirs--anytime. "My" books are in a different location and are for read alouds and small group reading.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - You can also have the child slide tiles together with the letters on them as he says the sounds.
judy3ca - More later, Erin! Have fun!
Marcia/1st/GA - did you describe this in your article you mentioned before?
Suzanne/tx/3 - that's what i do judy
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hi Mrs. J.
cavey - diane lol ,me too, and I'm at that magic 35
naneb - making words is another good activity for blending sounds
diane - hi mrs j
Suzanne/tx/3 - but i'll put the ones i read in a basket for a week to ten days so thekids can read them before i put them back on the shelf
Grace/IL - Sliding tiles together is great but tracing and writing involves even more modalities
Marcia/1st/GA - I like my mountain method. A second grader gave me the idea and it helps the child in blending the sounds together. It's visual.
Michelle/3/or - I pull books out of my library that I will be using for read alouds, but put them back in the library when I've finished.
naneb - I play the sound bingo that is in Reading Reflex too
Grace/IL - Not there, Marcia, but it's on my website.
judy3ca - Hi Suzanne! Gosh, I'm having trouble keeping up!
Jan - Hi, Mrs. J and Suzanne
cavey - Hi Mrs.J not to be confused with mrsg
Mrs. J - Judy, I just had this discussion today with the queen of books in my building. She has tons! How do you decide which books are for kids and which books you keep for just you? I'm having trouble letting go!
Suzanne/tx/3 - i see i've got the same color as you judy - shall i change?
judy3ca - Suzanne--right, I put the read alouds on the chalk rail for the week--and they can read them individually, too.
Grace/IL - Marcia, yes. The vowel goes up to form the mountain?
Jan - My brain is moving much more slowly than this board!
diane - that's what i have always done, michelle...i'm going to need to build an addition to my classroom...that's all there is to it
Michelle/3/or - oh....I've had a great experience with Wondrous Words...
Marcia/1st/GA - The vowel sound is put at the top of the mountain b/c the voice is inflected up with vowel sounds. We slide up the mountain first, then when that is solid, we slide down.
cavey - Michelle do tell
diane - michelle, how so?
judy3ca - MrsJ--well, that's a problem, too--I'm possessive, LOL. But the fact is--both the kids library and every space in the room are pretty much full of books--they've never complained about needing more.
Michelle/3/or - I started reading parts of it aloud to my son....parts about why writers write and what inspires them....and since then he has been writing daily...and he has always hated writing! and now he's excited for school to start
judy3ca - Michelle, do tell about Wondrous Words!
Sharon - oh here it is... i didn't read closely enough... it just says that orton's theories are no longer tenable, but some aspects of this pogram are consistent with more recent research indicating the need for deelopment of phonics understandings
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Neat, Michelle!
Michelle/3/or - I'm excited for him, and for what this can mean for my students
diane - michelle that's fabulous! have you read what you know by heart as well?
cavey - Okay I'll try it Michelle- my son's a non writer too
judy3ca - Michelle, that's truly wondrous!
Sharon - i'm so visual, marcia..... i'm trying to 'see' it in action in my mind
Michelle/3/or - diane, I read that one first. I wish i had read WW first.
Marcia/1st/GA - which writing book of Katie Woods is better for primary
Grace/IL - Sharon, that's right. The whole International Dyslexia Association arose from the former Orton Society
Jan - Michelle, that's impressive!
diane - marcia, i find that wondrous words is more for the craft of writing and what you know by heart is more for the process of writing...both suitable for primary...it just depends on your needs
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I just returned from a 2 day early literacy conference. Writing was a big focus. One excellent speaker demonstrated how to use story-telling to make the writing-drama-text connection. It was very powerful, but I will have to post on the main board as it's too much to post here.
Marcia/1st/GA - Thanks, grace. I will read about it. Are you a special ed teacher?
Grace/IL - We used to sing the vowels in single-syllable words -- \m\ \a-a-a--a\ \n\
naneb - this is the website for readamerica, i had the wrong program it is Phono-graphix http://www.readamerica.net/
diane - can't wait, alta rose
cavey - Alta - Please do, for the chatboard impaired
Michelle/3/or - Also....he's reading like a writer! He says his next story is going to have chapters where each chapter is narrated by a different character, like in the Magic School Bus chapter book he likes....and I never mentioned it!
Grace/IL - Marcia, I'm a retired first-grade teacher.
diane - wow, michelle!
Jan - Alta Rose, please post the stuff on synthesis on the board, too. I can't keep up here!
judy3ca - Michelle--I love that! I really think that's what happens when the writing teaching is magic--they do things like that.
Sharon - she's one of my favorite cyber reading experts, marcia
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon, I can see why!
Sharon - grace knows her stuff and is so free in sharing
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I heard many different speakers over the last two days, but one reoccuring message, which we all know, is the power of literature and words.
diane - i have been reading everyone's stories about their first days (those that have gone back)...i am chomping at the bit to get back!!
Grace/IL - You're both so sweet.
Jan - Michelle, that's impressive!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - How many are back already? I don't go back until after Labour Day.
Sharon - one day (in about 50 years) i'm gonna BE grace, judy and jan... all rolled up into one!
cavey - another Grace fan here!
judy3ca - Diane, me too--and I've got another week and a half to wait!
Michelle/3/or - I'm glad others have already gone back to school...then I can just follow what good ideas they've used.
Sharon - so grace.... just work on tracing two letter words, while saying each and blending slowly?
cavey - Judy Diane come work on my room in your spare time
diane - lol, michelle...me too!
judy3ca - Sharon
judy3ca - Diane, me too--and I've got another week and a half to wait!
diane - alta, i don't officially go back until the 27th...kids are back on sept 4
Grace/IL - Sharon, yes. Start with am, then an, them move to man. Next add another letter like t and make all the words you can from that.
Michelle/3/or - We have our work day this coming monday, then 4 days of inservice. Then kids the following monday. So today was the last day of my vacation
Marcia/1st/GA - Grace, it sounds like making words, but with tracing.
Grace/IL - I learned a lot of what I know from Project Read. It's at www.projectread.com
diane - judy, i like the looks of your first three days...the metacognition stuff looks good
Sharon - grace... i added rimes to my weekly phonics instruction.... would that be detrimental to him?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Sharon, do they know letters / sounds but just can't blend them yet?
naneb - Sharon, then you can write sentences with the words too and little stories
Sharon - does he need to isolate and hear first?
Grace/IL - Marcia, yes, like making words except you build in a straight line from the simple to the complex.
cavey - Judy tell us about metacognition ( in your new color)
judy3ca - Diane, thanks, does it look like years of work instead of days?
Michelle/3/or - I went to the library to read the Cynthia Ryland picture books. I learned that there's "no ocean like the Oregon ocean", so I went there on Tuesday. It was fabulous!
Michelle/3/or - Rylant urgh
Sharon - weak letter recognition, alta rose
Marcia/1st/GA - Michelle, I love Cynthia Rylant books
cavey - Rylant is the best!
judy3ca - Trying again!
Sharon - judy, judy, judy,... how many times have i told you not to sit in the window?
Grace/IL - Have him trace the letters on texture until that's automatic. One small step at a time. Rimes will help but he may need smaller segments than that.
diane - judy...given that your kids will have a foundation in this stuff already, it seems very feasible...
cavey - you girls look a little peaked since you came back
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon, I have found that some children have trouble naming letters (and numbers) because they have word recall problems (language deficit issues) These are the same kids who have trouble naming objects or remembering the name of someone.
judy3ca - Sharon, how did you know? And it's all your fault--I left for one second to figure out how to make you a happy face and I got lost in space.
diane - michelle, i got back from the coast yesterday. it was strangely hot there on tuesday! i can't remember a day that it hit 100 degrees on the coast
Michelle/3/or - how do you make the faces?
Sharon - would you just focus on the letters he missed during the assessment? his speed was atrocious in reading those letters
Marcia/1st/GA - Diane, which coast?
Grace/IL - Marcia, where in Georgia are you. Have a step-daughter in Marietta.
naneb - go to the ? on the left and scroll down to the bottom and it will show you not all of them work in thsi room though
diane - sorry marcia, oregon coast
judy3ca - Diane--thanks! The funny thing is that one teacher I shared it with is usually very negative. She called me later to say how much she liked it and blah, blah. Very interesting.
Michelle/3/or - Diane, I couldn't believe how hot it was....even the water was warm....
naneb - :0
Marcia/1st/GA - Grace, Marietta is 10 minute from me.
naneb -
Jan - I seem to be having a little trouble coping with the technology tonight!
naneb -
naneb -
Grace/IL - Actually in rural Marietta -- close to Roswell
judy3ca - Jan, you're not the only one,LOL!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Me too, Jan!
judy3ca -
naneb -
naneb - 8-)
Sharon - nan, that red one looks like a bad sunburn
Sharon - hello mrs. j
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Sorry Sharon, I missed part of what you said. It is letters, and sounds the little one is having trouble with, or the blending?
Mrs. J - Geez, I got lost in space at the smileys too!
naneb - in the chatroom all of the faces work but only some of them work in here
Marcia/1st/GA - Still fairly close, Grace. I live in Kennesaw. West Cobb, she may be in East Cobb County
Sharon - all of it alta rose
Jan -
diane - judy, i think i will need to stretch the metacognition piece out a little longer...any suggestions?
judy3ca - Mrs. J--glad it wasn't just me!
Marcia/1st/GA - Sharon, back to your fellow. what was your question?
Grace/IL - Sharon, I start by teaching printing and using a sound/symbol chart. Learning the sounds is more important that learning letter names. Those will fall into place later.
Sharon - um... i forgotted
Michelle/3/or - what a hassle! I'm having all sorts of problems. oh well.
Marcia/1st/GA - The Distar program never even introduced the names of the letters until well into the program.
naneb - Grace, I agree with that, learn sounds first and then names
cavey - Okay I had to try it too:-0
Grace/IL - From Spalding -- I use a clock face to make the letter 'c'. Start at 2 o'clock and go counter-clockwise to 4 (on texture). Tracing helps lock in the shape
judy3ca - Diane, yes! I've always taken longer in the past. I'd do at least a couple of days of modeling, more read alouds with class discussion, then kids work (groups or independently) on strategy and return to discuss. I'm really thinking of mine as an intro.
Michelle/3/or - you're in good company, judy
cavey - of course it didn't work
Sharon - i got confused with that grace... they had us read all this research that said identifying letters and phonemic awareness were the TOP two indicators of reading success ( not sounds)
naneb - I always ask for the sound and not the letter
Marcia/1st/GA - Grace, I do it the Recipe for Reading way. I use the kids arms and bodies to formsome of the letters.
Jan - Oh,for Pete's sakes...I cannot stay on this board for two seconds!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Jan, are you back to stay?
diane - last year i went straight to the strategies without a discussion of what metacognition even is...sheeeshhh
Sharon - i'm going to look up more on tracing with texture.... i'll bet that's one strategy that hasn't been tried with him
Jan - Michelle,I am too. What is it tonight!
Grace/IL - Sharon, now they're saying that it's possible for phonemic awareness to be built through the writing of words -- slow pronunciation -- it was recommended by Francis Parker in the 1890s
judy3ca - Diane, me too. Of course, we do MOT at my school, but I jumped right into my first strategy DI without any MC or S. Very odd.
Michelle/3/or - I think I talked about metacognition for about a day or two last year. I'm really interested in hearing what everyone else is doing
naneb - Sharon, you can make sandpaper letters for him to trace with his finger
Sharon - yes, grace... i've read something about that
Jan - I hope to stay around awhile. I am missing half the conversations as I ramble around in cyberspace
Marcia/1st/GA - you know, I have read that before too, Sharon. Also, that rimes are important. There is also the issue of having kids blend completely from left to right m-a-n or chunking it m-an. I have had kids who absolutely couldn't interrupt the flow with the rime-onset and had to blend left to right.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - And have him trace in salt, sugar, etc.
diane - michelle, i am blatantly stealing from judy!! LOL
Grace/IL - Marcia, I use the house concept for guidelines from Recipe for Reading.
Sharon - which would be great for a struggler in first grade
judy3ca - Jan, at least you're getting exercise!
Jan - And,I need it, Judy!
cavey - Good night everyone - it's oh so late and the kids will be up at 6:30
Marcia/1st/GA - yes, I like the little red house too
naneb - Phono-graphix teaches it left to right with individual sounds
judy3ca - Night, cavey!
Mrs. J - Night, Cavey
Marcia/1st/GA - Nan, can't you just write the letter on sandpaper with a crayon for the child to trace?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Take Care, Cavey!
diane - night, cavey
Jan - See you on the board, cavey
Grace/IL - Sandpaper letters, letters under screen wire, run a bead of white glue over letters you've printed. Mine go under transluscent plastic needlepoint canvas.
judy3ca - Diane, if you try what I'm doing, remember I'm trying it, too--no guarantees. and you have to tell me what happened!
Marcia/1st/GA - I am thinking of doing that for some of my tough cases in my room. I already have some done from old resource days, but need to organize and put in order for the kids
naneb - I think having them cut out reinforces the shape of the letter as well as the texture when you trace it
diane - of course, judy...
Sharon - i have lots of researching to do i think... this kid IS going to be successful this year
Jan -
Grace/IL - Sharon, do you have mother helpers in your room?
diane - why the long face, jan?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Have you heard about Jolly Phonics, Sharon? Apparently the little action that goes with each letter/ sound really helps some kids.
naneb - I have sound bingo cards, you say a sound and they cover the letter, they are in sets for different groups of sounds
Grace/IL - Jan, I'm sorry you're having such difficulties.
Marcia/1st/GA - It seems like you need to be one on one with the child to reinforce the word as he is tracing. I always liked using the card reader
Sharon - I can get them this year, grace...new school with 14 parents signed up to help in any way they can
Jan -
Grace/IL - Jolly Phonics is neat. They have grooved letters on the covers of their books.
Sharon - no, alta rose... i'll check into it though
naneb - a language master?
Jan - Oops. sorry I got the wrong face the first time.
Grace/IL - naneb, is that from Sing, Spell, Read and Write?
Michelle/3/or - wow, Sharon. That's great!
Marcia/1st/GA - yes, Nan, I couldnt think of it.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - brb
naneb - no Grace they are in Reading Reflex and you just copy them
Grace/IL - You can have the parents do a lot of one on one with him if you understand what to do.
Jan - brb
Sharon - yes, michelle... orientation... first time ever... every child had 2 parents there
Alta Rose / 1-2 - The little autistic boy I had last year had been taught some Jolly Phonics in K. His T.A. continued it with him last year, as it was a great strategy for him.
Sharon - I need to copy this chat!!!!!!! I'm afraid i'll forget all your suggestions!
judy3ca - Sharon, you deserve that!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - brb
Grace/IL - This chat will be archived. It may take a few days.
diane - michelle, back to your author son...have you been modeling writing with him??
Michelle/3/or - diane, actually no, I haven't. Just been talking about it.
Sharon - initially, would you have parents working on the texture tracing with him?
Michelle/3/or - I wasnt' really expecting anything out of it...I just needed to have someone to talk to about what I was reading, and he was there.
Sharon - thanks, judy
diane - i'm trying to figure out how to keep my own writing going...it's dwindled to next to nothing since the writing project ended....
Grace/IL - If you find a savvy parent, yes, they can supervise his tracing and talking. It's going to take a lot of effort.
Sharon - do you suggest having him say the letter or the sound or both while tracing?
Michelle/3/or - I want to get involved in some sort of writing project like you did, diane. To me, writing is like exercising. I know it's good for me and that I'll benefit from it...but i just can't get started
Jan - Michelle, how old is your son? Can't remember if you told us this before.
Michelle/3/or - He is 7. entering 2nd grade.
Marcia/1st/GA - Michelle, do you have a university nearby? They might have wirting project there
judy3ca - Michelle and diane, me too! I'll write a little and then say I don't have time.
Michelle/3/or - very gifted, too.
Jan - Wow! His progress speaks well for WW.
diane - michelle...they offer scholarships that cover the tuition that you can't...there's one at lewis and clark
Grace/IL - I worked a half hour a day, one on one, with my little tutee in order for her to make progress. I think we've finished our 108th session but she's reading.
judy3ca - Just like his mom!
Jan - Yes, Michelle, I can see that. What fun that he picks up on the things he does.
Sharon - now see... i get all emotional over posts like that, grace!
Grace/IL - Some of these children are so language deprived it takes mountains of time to help them succeed
Michelle/3/or - When I first started teaching 1st grade, my son was in kindergarten. I got a big surprise that not all kids pick things up as easily as my son does. That's when I knew he wasn't typical.
diane - lol, sharon, a lot of the posts with back to school stories have been choking me up!!
Michelle/3/or - diane, I'll have to look into that. I think it would do me a lot of good.
Sharon - i was never diagnosed as gifted.... but i have been diagnosed as hyper! *strut*
Sharon - i was never diagnosed as gifted.... but i have been diagnosed as hyper! *strut*
Sharon - double post...... see????
judy3ca - Grace, about that "language deprived" comment--so true--and what do you recommend for those kids? I don't mean the phonics, but what kind of vocab development and speaking?
Grace/IL - Michelle, they can be brilliant and have all the background knowledge but sometimes it's just the letters and sounds that don't click.
judy3ca - Sharon, ROFL!
naneb - don't you think a lot of kids just lack experiences, they haven't got the background knowledge to enable them to learn to read
diane - with budget cuts, districts may not pay for the writing project as much any more...but i bet a grant could be written
Grace/IL - Judy, Kim would tell us read to them, read to them, read to them. My hope wat that the first grade teacher was doing some of that so I just worked on letters and sounds and decodable text that she was able to pick up.
Marcia/1st/GA - It's late for me. I need to crawl off to bed now. It was nice chatting with all of you.
Grace/IL - Everytime she didn't understand a word, I'd explain it to her.
judy3ca - Grace--great! I like hearing that. Thanks.
Sharon - literally crawl?
Mrs. J - Night, Marcia
naneb - I have had students who have no books in their house, no one ever read to them
judy3ca - Good night, Marcia! Glad you were here!
naneb - bye, Marcia
Marcia/1st/GA - Yes, up the stairs!
Grace/IL - Have a good evening Marcia. I'd love to continue the chat sometime.
diane - night marcia
judy3ca - Nan, I can top that. When I taught in Los Angeles, I had kids who came to school and didn't know their own body parts in their own language.
Marcia/1st/GA - me too. Are you coming to GA soon?
judy3ca - I kept wondering, didn't anyone ever tell them to put their arm in the jacket?
Jan - It's been a wild week folks---workshops have begun---I'm signing off. Many thanks for all your inspiring words!
Michelle/3/or - about half my students don't speak English in the home, so they don't have the vocabulary they need.
naneb - judy, don't get me started, one of my life skills kids went to the office pointed to his elbow and said he had hurt his shoulder, He was in 9th grade!!
diane - michelle, there's a writing project at willamette univ...even closer to you www.willamette.org/owp/
Grace/IL - Next summer for a wedding in Milledgeville but will stop in Marietta
judy3ca - Good night, Jan! Thanks again!
naneb - Sharon and I can probably get the whole top this story telling going again!!
Sharon - we're just beginning to see non-english speaking students in our area
Marcia/1st/GA - Grace, not soon enough. I will chat with you probably before then
Sharon - and not prepared!
Michelle/3/or - thanks diane
Mrs. J - Gotta stop lurking and head to bed too. Almost midnight.
judy3ca - Michelle, but it's okay if they have the vocab in their own language--then there's someplace to go. Imagine when they don't even have the vocab in their first language!
Grace/IL - We made 3 trips to GA since January so have to visit other children
Mrs. J - Night
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Night, Mrs. J!
Sharon - awwww mrs. j... it's friday!
diane - sheesh...keep getting booted off.
Marcia/1st/GA - wish I had known you then. bye
Michelle/3/or - yeah, that's frustrating Judy.
judy3ca - Diane, welcome back, LOL.
Mrs. J - My kids won't care that it was Friday and will be up at the crack of dawn!
Grace/IL - If they don't have the vocab in their own language, we just have to feed it to them in ours. One thing I've done is cut up phonics books and categorize all the words in folders.
judy3ca - Michelle, probably more sad than frustrating.
naneb - and read, read, read all kinds of books to them
judy3ca - Sharon, what language(s) are you seeing?
Michelle/3/or - that's true
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Whoops. Sorry for the typo.
Pollie - Hi
naneb - we are getting more and more hispanic students
Alta Rose / 1-2 - One of our speakers today said we should read at least 4 times per day to our kids.
Sharon - One child from africa... not sure of language... one child speaks only spanish
Grace/IL - I work one evening a week with adult ESL. One of the things they have to do for beginning level competency is name 5 body parts. That's a big accomplishment for most of them
naneb - and not stop reading to them just because they are older
judy3ca - Alta Rose--oh, thanks, now my first week plans are looking better and better! I can read alout with impunity!
Sharon - wasn't jazz chants originally for adult ESL's?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Judy. lol!
diane - LOL judy...i read aloud more than any other teacher in my building...
naneb - I am doing t-s connections next week, I can't wait to read The Relatives Came to my class
naneb - I am reading Dogsong to my 8th graders and they love it
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Naneb, I have to ask you--Are you also Nan? I'm a bit confused!
Grace/IL - naneb, text to self?
diane - see...this is why i am chomping at the bit!! i want to read all of my favorite books again!!!!
naneb - sorry, Grace, yes text-self connections
judy3ca - Diane, I probably do, too. I bought a bunch of 99¢ books for my colleagues and one teacher said today she was labeling a new basket, "Judy's recommendations."
diane - i did read a wonderful sharon creech today, but my husband really wasn't interested
naneb - Alta Rose, yes I should have logged on that way sorry
Alta Rose / 1-2 - That's OK, naneb.
naneb - I am Nan on the mailring
judy3ca - Diane, I LOVE Sharon Creech! I'm thinking of using one (of course, I can't remember the title) as the basis for WW poetry. Which one did you read today?
naneb - judy, I have another order for bookcloseouts but I am trying not to order them
judy3ca - Nan, I got received an order and an email yesterday, so of course I had to order more.
diane - judy...is it love that dog? (something like that)...i read bloomability today....ahhhhhh...she's my all time favorite as far as longer texts go
judy3ca - Diane--yes, something about a dog. Isn't it wonderful? I haven't read Bloomability....good for third?
Grace/IL - Think I'm going to head for bed. I've chatted right through the evening news but it's been fun. Night all.
Michelle/3/or - oh, I like Love That Dog. I notice scholastic is featuring it in Arrow for September. I'll have to see if i can order it with my Lucky order.
Michelle/3/or - good night, grace
Sharon - night grace... thanks
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Good night, Grace!
naneb - We are reading Sideways Stories from Wayside Schools
Alta Rose / 1-2 - brb
diane - actually, that was why i read it...i think it will work for later in the year, after we've had lots of discussions under our belt. i love using sharon creech because i think she really stretches the kids
diane - nan...i always start my year with wayside school
judy3ca - I'd better call it a night, too. All that strategy thinking has done me in. Good night my friends!
Sharon - night judy... i'm right behind you
diane - night judy
Michelle/3/or - My son read to me several chapters from one of the Wayside books today....it made me think of the Choral Readings mentioned in WW...I'm going to have to try it out.
naneb - I like that the chapters are so short, we were looking for evidence of fiction and we could read several chapters and practice
diane - me too...i'm too tired for only 9:00
diane - night all
Sharon - night all....see ya on the ring
Sharon - night all....see ya on the ring
naneb - it is almost 11:00 here
naneb - night Sharon
naneb - I am going too, night
Michelle/3/or - well...I need to go check out bookcloseouts....see you later.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Well, I think i will sign off, too. Goodnight, everyone!
