erin - have to share a great connection a student made today. We had a small fire at our school yesterday. So today we talked about what we saw and knew. Then I read the newspaper article which was very small
erin - They said "That's not everything" so I said how they highlighted certain event
Mrs. J/2/3 - Hi, everyone, I echo the tired sentiments. A wicked cold has been circulating our building, I'm the newest lucky recipient
Alta Rose / 2 - Hi Sharon!
erin - Later when we were using highlighters on our papers and I was explaining how to do it one studnet said "Just like the newspaper article"
naneb - Yeah!!! Erin what a great connection!
Alta Rose / 2 - Neat, Erin!
Alta Rose / 2 - I am just introducing t-t. They seem to be getting it.
Sharon - hiya altarose... sure was glad to see you joined the yahoo group.... hi nan... weather ok? hi erin and michelle and Mrs. J, too!
Mrs. J/2/3 - And a fine color it is too Michelle!
Alta Rose / 2 - Oops. I meant t-self.
Sharon - nan... did you send a download to me?
naneb - So far Sharon, stupid storm is just sitting out there, we had a big thunder boomer earlier but tonight it is okay
Alta Rose / 2 - Yes, Sharon, I'm enjoying the Yahoo group and learning lots. I ordered that book "Now Everyone Really Hates Me" today.
erin - nan have you tried just the nasal spray for your allergies. It helps me
Michelle/3/or - I'm exhausted too. but I couldn't miss the chat! I went to the local Oktoberfest earlier tonight. And I'm zonked.
erin - Same here Alta...Two days only a few even trying in their books
Sharon - i ordered that one and the other one about never leaving the dinner table by the same author, altarose
naneb - no, are you getting funny attachments? I have been getting them too. I bet someone has a virus
Sharon - i got one from you... it said, important please read with an attachment, nan
naneb - erin, I take zyrtec and the nasal spray nasonex, I have had sinus surgery twice, nothing much helps
Michelle/3/or - Oh...a neat thing with connections....I taught the Strategies when I taught half these kids when they were in first grade, then one of the 2nd grade teachers taught the schema part of it (including t-t, t-s, and t-w connections). Those kids are already on a role this year!
erin - That is the problem with allergies. I'm supposed to have the surgery but hesaid if I can live with it to do that for as long as I can
naneb - Sharon, it just looks like it is from me, that is how the virus works, it is an old email that I sent someone and it is sent to everyone in their address book. I don't have a virus. I just ran a scan
Sharon - ok.. i'll just delete... thanks, nan
Alta Rose / 2 - There was a post on the 4Blocks about a book from Scholastic with graphic organizers to help teach the strategies called "Graphic Organizers For Differentiated Instruction in Reading." It sounded good.
naneb - It is probably that W32 worm virus, not dangerous but very annoying
Michelle/3/or - I haven't been to the chat board in 2 weeks..but I just took a look and noticed that all the Californians are now admitting to being strange, or some such thing.
erin - I saw that Alta, just found it in the Scholastic catalog
Alta Rose / 2 - Was it in the teacher's Bonus catalogue, Erin?
erin - No alta the one they send to your house. Teacher Resources
erin - If you want the info let me know
Alta Rose / 2 - Classroom Essentials, Erin?
Michelle/3/or - I just got my first Scholastic order of the year in the mail yesterday. It came with a bunch of books for the kids about words...like prefixes and suffixes and such. I'm trying to see how I can use them in ELD (you know, since I have to teach ELD to everyone)
Alta Rose / 2 - brb
Mrs. J/2/3 - Michelle, that was the one where every kid got a free book, right?
Michelle/3/or - I got that free teacher's calendar thing too. trying to figure out how I can use it.
erin - My kids ordered over $130 from the book orders today. I can get lots of free books with that
Michelle/3/or - yes, that's the one.
Mrs. J/2/3 - I know, erin. My kids went crazy with the one I sent in too. One girl brought in a $50 bill...and these kids get freelunch
Michelle/3/or - in the September Lucky order.
Sharon - i need a bookclub order form... new school and we're not getting order flyers from scholastic or any other... can i sign up online to get it?
erin - Yes Sharon
erin - Just go to Scholastic and then bookclubs
Michelle/3/or - My kids last year ordered lots of books. Not as big a response so far this year. I had about $90 in orders placed.
Sharon - thanks, erin... brb
erin - Last year my class didn't order many. This years class seems more excited.
erin - It's odd how different the classes are
Sharon - om
Mrs. J/2/3 - LOL, Michelle. $90 is out of this world for me!
Michelle/3/or - and these kids are 100% free breakfast and lunch, too.
erin - Although if they're like my son, I finally told him no more books until he reads the ones he has
naneb - my students never order books
Mrs. J/2/3 - Hello, my alter ego, Kim
Michelle/3/or - my son made out his birthday/Christmas list...it's all books
Kim/1/Ca - Greetings......(((((hugs to all))))))
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, Michelle! ALL books?
Mrs. J/2/3 - That is too cool, Michelle. My daughter is in third grade and she can't get enough books either
Michelle/3/or - kim...I've been thinking about you in your "bait-and-switch" classroom
Michelle/3/or - yeah. He said he'll add other items later (his birthday's not until December)
Kim/1/Ca - Sigh........yeah..........things are a bit better this week. I really like my kids.
Michelle/3/or - did you bring in the kitchen and all?
Mrs. J/2/3 - Kim, bait and switch classroom?
Alta Rose / 2 - Sorry, Erin, I was distracted by the phone. Was it the Classroom Essential catalogue that book is in?
Kim/1/Ca - Well Mrs. J (Kim).....I was supposedly hired for a K1 combo, 12 Kinders and 8 firsties............ now it is a straight first. tthis is okay, though..........but it has been a very stressful start.
erin - No the Teacher Resource catalog
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, the kitchen is set up and they love it. But they didn't know the washing machine was a washing machine.......LOL,,,,,they were putting food in it.
Michelle/3/or - LOL, I can imagine.
Alta Rose / 2 - Maybe it's different here. The Classroom Essentials is teacher resources.
naneb - Must live in a house like mine, nobody cooks!! LOL
Michelle/3/or - we don't have a washing machine in our house.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Wow, you really are my alter ego. I started out straight 3rd the first week. The second week I was a 2/3. Starting Monday, I am straight third again with a couple of 2nds (different than the original bunch) thrown in who will just do third grade curriculum. So I have had a different class every week!
erin - It's in the Graphic Organizers section
Kim/1/Ca - One of my little girls told me a WHOPPER today. I had them drawing pics of family and writing a little............she made her mother green with angel wings. Said that her mother died of cancer..........that there was NOTHING the doctor could do for her.
Alta Rose / 2 - Thanks, Erin.
erin - nan...cook? What's that?
erin - How sad for that little girl
Kim/1/Ca - Now, little Cheyenne lost her mother five months ago and it has been rough. I think Tiera heard us talking ......... well, Tiera just kept telling me her momma was dead. I asked who brought her to school the first day. "Gramma."
Michelle/3/or - last March, I pulled my son out of his 1st grade class and put him into another, in another school (psycho teacher, long story), and when the class did a shared writing interview and he brought the poster home...i found that he had invented a brother!
Mrs. J/2/3 - We had a new kinder, take the clothes off a boy baby doll in her room, and start sucking on its private parts. The mom got mad when the teacher told her about it and thought she was accusing her of something
erin - Wow Mrs. J. That's one I've never heard
Kim/1/Ca - Well...........i went to her K teacher and the K teacher said she saw mom the other day........alive and well. I shared this with tiera and she smiled and said, "I was just foolin" I was NOT happy with her. Would you call the mom or let it go?
Mrs. J/2/3 - Michelle, does he want a brother? My daughter used to tell everyone I was pregnant because she really wants a sister
Michelle/3/or - All the kids then wrote about Alec and his brother Jason playing basketball together and such.
erin - LOL MIchelle
Kim/1/Ca - LOL Michelle............
Michelle/3/or - He wants an older brother, not a younger one. He has a younger sister, so he knows what that's like
erin - Kim, maybe wait and see. If she was responding to that other girl it may pass
Kim/1/Ca - Well, it really affected me emotionally. These kids are so needy and here was ANOTHER one without a mother.
Mrs. J/2/3 - She probably just wanted the attention that little girl was getting. I wouldn't say anything unless a pattern developed
Michelle/3/or - Kim, I think I would let it go.
erin - My son wants a baby brother or sister very bad, but the doctors have told me I only have a 40 percent chance of carrying full term
Mrs. J/2/3 - I would tell her how it made you feel though
erin - My son has made up a dalmation dog that we bought and convinced his grandparents of it
Mrs. J/2/3 - I'm sorry, Erin. That must be rough, assuming you wouldn't mind another too
Kim/1/Ca - I did tell her. I said "Tiera, you really made me feel terrible. I felt so sorry. This wasn't foolin, this was a lie."
erin - Oh I do. I had three miscarriages over the last two years. I may try a couple more times but that's it.
Kim/1/Ca - You are right, though. She probably just wanted the same attention Cheyenne got...........sigh.
Alta Rose / 2 - I agree with you, Mrs. J. It was probably attention-seeking. I taught a boy who lost his mother in a car accident a couple of weeks before school. (Gr.1) It was tough. Kim I think you handled it appropriately.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Maybe when she realizes you care about her and give her attention for positive things, she won't feel the need to lie
Michelle/3/or - I remember spinning fantastical stories when I was in kinder. Lies and Stories have a fine line at that age.
Kim/1/Ca - I am so sorry, Erin. Truly. I hope things work out for you and your family.
erin - Thanks
erin - I have a little boy whose mother died five years ago four hours after giving birth to his sister. Then two months ago his stepmom left with his baby brother. He is having a hard time
Alta Rose / 2 - Kim, it does sound like it was well thought out on the girls part, though. She went through all the trouble of drawing it, and didn't just blurt it out.
naneb - I hit the wrong button and booted myself
Kim/1/Ca - I feel good about this class. I care so much about them already. I just wish I could get THEM to care about each other. But......time will tell.
Alta Rose / 2 - Very sad, erin.
Michelle/3/or - I have 2 boys who both lost their fathers last May. One's dad had a heart attack, the other committed suicide.
Mrs. J/2/3 - There was a show on discovery channel or lifetime a while back that talked about how kids at that age don't have the cognitive capacity to truly understand "lie"
Kim/1/Ca - Funny thing, Alta........I wasn't fawning over Cheyenne. I thought it was very private and personal...a little support for a little girl missing her mother. Tiera is very perceptive though.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Geez, it's a wonder our kiddos make it to school everyday, isn't it?
naneb - I like my 6th graders too, I had a boy come running into my class and gave me a hug, he said, " I wanted to give you a hug before i left." I asked if he was moving and he said , no. I said where are you going and he said, "PE!"
Kim/1/Ca - Kim.......at what point do they have the capacity ? did the show say?
erin - nan...great story
Alta Rose / 2 - Lol, naneb!
Kim/1/Ca - LOL naneb...............good one.
Sharon - lol, nan! and i'm impressed... sixth grade boys still hug teachers?
Kim/1/Ca - I have a good "school secretary" story for ya..........
Michelle/3/or - I feel like my class is really starting to come along. Right when I was beginning to wonder. But today we were able to have a whole-group discussion without even needing to raise hands. A great discussion about how to improve our Reading Workshop behaviors.
naneb - He is so sweet! These kids are very low, you would think they are 3rd graders
Mrs. J/2/3 - I'm not sure, Kim. It's a little hazy. Don't know if I'm getting old or it's just my cold medicine buzz! I think they start playing around with the concept around 5 and 6, and put it together around 8 or 9
Kim/1/Ca - You know the kind of school secretary who is very enamored with the power she has? Very full of herself? Very rightous? Acts as if teachers are the enemies?
erin - I changed my seating, so that they are not in groups. It has made a tremendous difference
Sharon - oh yes, kim... been there, had that!
Mrs. J/2/3 - My secretary, Kim?
erin - Kim...is this the one at my mom's school? LOL
Kim/1/Ca - Well............you wouldn't believe the run around she has given me over the parent volunteer forms. And always in a "huff" even though she appears the fool.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Erin, I have thought about that--I feel like I'm committing some cardinal sin if I go to rows though
Kim/1/Ca - So......I am sharing this "saga" with a teacher from another site who knows her well. She shared this story.
erin - Mrs J...I read some of what Jan wrote on the Management board and it changed my thinking
Kim/1/Ca - It seems that last winter Sharon was going up the ramp to her classroom.......she slipped and fell on an icy patch. Bruised her hip and thigh up real good...........
Mrs. J/2/3 - Was it a recent post, Erin? Can you give me a short synopsis?
erin - She said how some students don't like the grouping....pairs are the best...you can move chairs if you need to...The post is still there if you want to look
Michelle/3/or - Last year I moved my kids into pairs. I felt like it was my dirty little secret.
Mrs. J/2/3 - brb
Kim/1/Ca - Her kids are due back in 20 minutes from lunch recess. So, Sharon calls the office . SS (school secretary) answers the phone. Sharon says I fell up my ramp. SS says, "You have to fill out an accident report."
erin - Mrs J. Best thing I did with this class. They are participating more and paying attention
naneb - Maybe you all can help me with my 8th grade reading/ tutoring class. I have them for 90 minutes 45 minutes is tutoring in Science and the other 45 minutes is reading. They hate to read. We are suppose to do AR but, this is not going to work. I think I need to start with several different activities and work up to more extended time reading, any ideas?
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon says, "I am fine. I just need somebody to come down and salt the ramp. will you get the custodian?"
erin - Was she supposed to fill it out right then?
Sharon - keep telling, kim... i'm reading!
naneb - Kim, I didn't mean to jump into the middle of your story
Kim/1/Ca - SS doesn't miss a beat. "You have to fill out a requisition form."
erin - For salt????????????
Sharon - oh lawdy!
Kim/1/Ca - FOR THE CUSTODiAN to come down!!!!
erin - AHHHHHHHHHHHH
erin - You have got to be kidding me
Alta Rose / 2 - Here's a funny one: Last night we were at my daughters (Gr. 7) Open House and the teacher had their autobiographies that they'd written for display. The teacher had asked them to write about their school years, etc. One girl wrote: "When I was in Gr. 1 I wrote another girl's name on my paper to get a better mark. The teacher wrote a 4 page note to my parents, but I never cheated on another test again! I laughed when I realized the teacher was me! I remember the incident very well, and the note (I doubt it was 4 pages) was because it took me the whole day for the girl to admit she'd done it! (I had never suspected "cheating" as I couldn't figure out why she'd done it at all. The only reason I caught it was because the child whose name she chose wasn't there that day!
Michelle/3/or - we have one secretary like that. the other one has Common Sense, though. Sheesh!
Kim/1/Ca - She told me this story because I complained to her about how Michael was puking in class as we lined up for lunch. I called for somebody to come down and either walk my kids to lunch or take care of poor Michael, who is heaving and a mess.............
erin - We have the best office staff in the world. We are very blessed. They would help out in any way they could
Sharon - lawdy... i'm thinking about the time, a little boy barfed all over my room so bad that we had to leave it till it was cleaned up... if i had been told fill out a form for that, i woulda gone off on somebody!
Kim/1/Ca - And SS says, "Bring him down." I say, "He is still puking." She says, "Bring the trash can."
erin - Kim, how does she keep her job?
Sharon - it's that way at our new school too, erin... i'm so lucky
erin - Alta, that is a great story
Alta Rose / 2 - My daughter was mortified when I read it. Grade 7--Argg!
Kim/1/Ca - I think the union protects her.........oh brother.............I just shake my head. I am lucky not to BE her and not to have to really WORK with her.
Kim/1/Ca - Great Story, Alta!
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon............that was my sister's first day of teaching!
Kim/1/Ca - She walks into a high school science class and begins to go over procedures..........and this kid just upchucks. Sue goes to help and SLIPS and FALLS.
erin - OUr secretary is awesome. ONe morning my mom called in a panic right when the bell rang. The secretary took my class in, did attendance, started DOL. What a gem
erin - 1
erin - OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH..Yuck!!!!!!!
Kim/1/Ca - I have worked with some awesome school secretaries....................truly. and terrific custodians too.
erin - My mentor teacher had shared that she had a student come up and say, "Mrs. W I don't feel good..BLEAH...all over her"
Michelle/3/or - When I was a sub on a cold February day, 2 second grade girls wanted to stay inside for recess. I told them that they could only stay in if they had notes from their parents. They both returned shortly with notes...in 2nd grade handwriting. One was even signed "Kaitlyn's mommy". I wish I had saved them, but I thought the teachers deserved a good laugh too.
Kim/1/Ca - GOOD ONE michelle...............LOOLOLOLOLOL
erin - I had a girl last year forge her mom's signature. I called her mom...who just happened to be head of forgery for the LAPD...that girl will never do that again. LOL
Alta Rose / 2 - I've had that before, Michelle--STA IN. That's all the note said.
Alta Rose / 2 - How funny, erin!
Kim/1/Ca - Okay.....I was so busy yakking........I misssed most of your desk arrangement stuff. WHAT is a good way to arrange?
Sharon - good one, michelle... it reminds me of a kindergartener we had last year... when asked his mom's name, he said "momma" so the teacher asked, "But what's her first name?" He looked puzzled and then answered, "My".
erin - I can see we need to rearrange your desk Kim LOL
Alta Rose / 2 - Lol, Sharon!
Kim/1/Ca - Hey, my desk is pretty clean........ pretty unusual.
Sharon - i found a way to keep my desk clean... i gave up the desk!
Michelle/3/or - my desk is gone, but now my kidney table is a mess.
Kim/1/Ca - Brad did the same thing, Sharon. Pretty radical............
erin - I so bad wanted to ask one of my students if he needed some Immodium since he seemed to have diarrhea of the mouth!!!!!!!!!!
Sharon - i love it, kim... all that extra room now
Kim/1/Ca - Well, now that you mention the KIDNEY table.........hmmmmmmmm...........
erin - That's why I rearranged my desks...the talkers
Alta Rose / 2 - I was on bus duty after school when a very confused-looking K. boy came, not sure what bus to get on. I didn't know, the drivers there didn't know, so one of the T.A.s took him back inside the school. Buses are all gone, there he is again, looking as confused as ever. So I take him to the office, explain the story, and the secretary phones Mom. He's supposed to walk--He lives TWO BLOCKS away!
naneb - my daughter could sign my name so that I couldn't tell the difference!
erin - Amazing Alta Rose
erin - What are parents thinking
Kim/1/Ca - That's just it, Sharon..................they are NOT thinking. Yet they procreate.
Michelle/3/or - I forged a note once when I was in 7th grade, because I forgot to have my mom write me a note after I had been sick. The bad thing was...my mom showed up later in the day at the office with a note. I never did that again!
Alta Rose / 2 - My desks are driving me crazy with 26 of them now!
erin - I have 24 students right now, but I had 28 so I still have the extra desks. Ours are the ones with two at a desk, side by side
erin - I need to get rid of some of them
Sharon - where's judy tonight?
erin - We're missing judy, jan and brad
naneb - I have tables and only 3 desks
erin - Oh and sadie too
Michelle/3/or - wow, erin, I have the same....24 students, but had 28 last year so I have the extra desks. I worry that when I get rid of some...I'll end up needing them
Alta Rose / 2 - I have mine in pairs. I've never done rows since my first year teaching. When I did rows, they were constantly getting up out of their seats to talk to each other!
Sharon - oops... phone... brb
erin - Well after three days our numbers changed so I had to move 4 kids out...trust me...it wasn't hard choosing.
erin - I have mine in two Es on each side of the room
Alta Rose / 2 - Can't you just have the desks removed and brought back if you need them, Michelle?
Kim/1/Ca - You got to choose? Cool......pity the OTHER teacher, though......
erin - So some face front some to the side
Kim/1/Ca - Two E's....? Hmmmm.......
erin - LOL Kim. I wasn't allowed to give up my real busters
Michelle/3/or - desks are hot commodities in our school. If I got rid of them, someone would snatch them up.
erin - exactly Michelle
Kim/1/Ca - phone ...... again. BRB
Alta Rose / 2 - Does that mean there aren't enough desks for every child?
erin - We only got to choose (my partner and I ) becasue we had more students
brad - yak yak yak you ladies never stop
Alta Rose / 2 - Hi Brad.
erin - Alta, no teachers just want extra desks if someone needs to be separated
Michelle/3/or - No. Many teachers have to settle for tables.
erin - ((((((((((((((brad)))))))))))))))))
Michelle/3/or - Hi, brad!
erin - Just wake up brad?
naneb - ((((((((((((((((brad))))))))))))))))))))
brad - Chairs were hot commodities in my building a couple days ago. Happened to be out of my room when they gained their "must-have" status, so they didn't notice I have about 25 extra stashed in the corner.
brad - had to wait my turn on computer tonight
erin - And why do you need 25 extra chairs?
Michelle/3/or - brad...I thought of you the other night when our local news did a little piece on how Mayonnaise is a real treat in Japan. They even put it in their drinks! Sounds like a salad-dressing thing to me.
erin - LOL Michelle
brad - they came with the room I inherited but they were tiny K1 chairs, so when they moved in all my desks and tables, no one ever moved them out. This, despite the fact that we added a first grade teacher this year. Go figure.
Alta Rose / 2 - Mayonnaise in drinks? Yuck!
Michelle/3/or - they put mayo all over their pizza too. would you do that with salad dressing?
brad - mayo in their drink? Even I have limits.
naneb - I like French dressing on pizza
Michelle/3/or - I know! they even showed someone putting it in water, mixing it and drinking it! EWWW
erin - That's gross
erin - No ranch dressing with pizza
brad - I could see maybe ranch on pizza too
brad - I've seen kids eat ranch on pizza in the cafeteria, (cause they usually serve pizza with salad)
Alta Rose / 2 - Panagos serves all kinds of dressing to put on their pizzas.
Michelle/3/or - Ranch goes with everything. but pure mayo? The kids at school put ketchup all over their pizza.
Kim/1/Ca - FRENCH dressing? Yuck.
naneb - ranch is okay on pizza but not as good as French dressing
Kim/1/Ca - ......and MAYONAISSE? The grosses substance on earth.
brad - Yuck, French dresssing or yuk, French dressing on pizza, Kim?
Alta Rose / 2 - I can handle everything except........blue cheese!
brad - Love blue cheese. Especially with celery sticks when you're eating hot wings.
Kim/1/Ca - Just in general. (((Hi Bradley)))
erin - I LOVE blue cheese
brad - smooches kim
Kim/1/Ca - Now blue cheese.........good for french fries.
Michelle/3/or - I like all dressings, but I don't add them to pizza. Pizza had enough calories already.
erin - and onion rings
erin - Hi diane
brad - yes, erin, onion rings too
diane - hi everybody!
Michelle/3/or - ooooh.....love blue cheese with buffalo wings! yum!
Kim/1/Ca - ((diane)))
Alta Rose / 2 - I didn't think ANYONE could like blue cheese!
Michelle/3/or - hey diane!
brad - calories, schmalories. Ya' haven't lived till you've clogged one artery.
diane - oooo...we're talking about food?
Alta Rose / 2 - Hi diane.
diane - thanks kim, i needed that
erin - Of course diane... it;s the professional eating board now
Kim/1/Ca - If you listen closely you can hear Brad's arteries clogging............
Michelle/3/or - well....brad showed up, so....
diane - sounds like my staff room
brad - Basically salad dressing is just its own food group
Kim/1/Ca - rrrrr.......funny erin
erin - We were having a very good chat until brad and his dressing came
Mrs. J/2/3 - OK, I'm back. Thanks for the advice to check out Jan's post on the management board. I share my room with another teacher who was hired yesterday, but I think she will be agreeable to whatever I want to try.
brad - Hey, I tried to talk about hording chairs but. . .
erin - Hi Sadie...see we mentioned all these people and here they come
Michelle/3/or - Hi, Sadie!
diane - not a dressing fan...but i do like pesto mayo
erin - What do you think Mrs. J
Kim/1/Ca - (((SADIE!)))finallly you guys are all here............
Sadie T - Hello chatters!
erin - Going to try it?
Sadie T - ...and hello lurkers! LOL
Mrs. J/2/3 - today, "Just tell me what to do!" Desks in pairs Monday!
brad - What's up with Jan and posting? I haven't checked board since right after I got home.
Alta Rose / 2 - Hi Sadie!
Kim/1/Ca - OH yuck..........pesto MAYO? ewwwwwwwwww
Michelle/3/or - and it all started with Mayo, diane...
diane - long day, kim...
Sadie T - What were you saying about me?! Never mind, I don't want to know...
Alta Rose / 2 - I have my desks in pairs. I like it.
Kim/1/Ca - Who brought up Mayo? The most DISGUSTING substance on this planet.............
brad - What is Pesto Mayo? (And if it's green, I'm outta here. . .)
erin - brad...on the management board...you posted to it regarding desks and carpet
Kim/1/Ca - Share, diane?
Michelle/3/or - mayo on pizza, mayo on rice, mayo mixed with water or milk....it's the new trend.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Can't say I'm going to nix the carpet yet though! They seem to be doing ok there. It's at the desks
diane - how could you not like pesto mayo????
erin - Really Kim...don't hold in your feelings...let them out
brad - oh, really, is that still going on (my post about carpet time)
Michelle/3/or - the only thing i've read on the prof. board is Crazy Californians.
erin - Mrs. J...I gave kids the option today...helped some of them
diane - it's pesto mixed in with mayonaise...great in tuna salad
Kim/1/Ca - <<<<<<<<<shuddering at the mere thought of mayonaisse on ANYTHING but car engines..........
erin - Brad...I just happened to read it...I think it is done'
naneb - pesto on anything is good!
brad - Michelle, really, although the board's been quieter than usual this week, you must update yourself more regularly
erin - KIm Car engines??????????
Kim/1/Ca - Pesto good. Mayo BAD.
diane - what have i missed on the board? big carpet discussion?
Mrs. J/2/3 - Erin told me to check out the thread, Brad because I said I felt like I was committing a cardinal sin if I moved my chatters out of groups into rows
brad - car engines?
erin - Love pesto
diane - lol kim...you haven't lived.
Kim/1/Ca - My grampa used to call mayo "axle grease."
erin - No diane...it's on the management board
erin - LOL Kim
Sadie T - Crazy Californians? Did I miss that post, or did I instigate it?
Mrs. J/2/3 - But I am going INSANE with this class right now. It doesn't seem to matter how many times we stop and talk about what we said we'd see/hear, etc. They just NEVER stop talking
brad - Mrs. J, well, we have not done any kind of carpet time since that thread and I only find myself missing it when I'm using the pocket chart or a big book. Still noodling.
Michelle/3/or - I know....my home life has been absolutely a roller coaster. I haven't been online, besides at these chats, in nearly 3 weeks.
erin - I think you were the instigator Sadie
Kim/1/Ca - me neither, michelle...........i hear ya loud and clear.
erin - I know the seating has helped the last two days in my class. I have my sanity
diane - mrs j, do you find that having one class per grade adds to management difficulties? it seems that by the time they get to me, they know how to push each other's buttons. like siblings
Sadie T - Probably I was, Erin... I can't even keep track of what *I* do anymore...
Mrs. J/2/3 - Really, Brad. Are you pulling chairs into a circle like Jan suggested for read alouds?
brad - Poor Michelle. Wanna share?
Kim/1/Ca - Circling the chairs? hmmmmmm.............
Michelle/3/or - last year, I pretty much gave up on being on the carpet. those kids didn't handle themselves well there, and many of them just plain didn't like it (uncomfortable)
Mrs. J/2/3 - Diane, my class has been traveling together since kindergarten. I think they do become like siblings
brad - Mrs. J., Yes, but I find them inching in closer and closer because (my opinion) they want to be near me when I read aloud. Wasn't shared reading supposed to be a larger form of lap reading they missed as children. Maybe kids instinctively homing in? Still noodling. Taking ideas.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Brad and Michelle, did you get rid of the carpet or leave it there for independent reading, etc?
erin - Michelle and brad. I had never thought about it until that post but it made a lot of sense. When I gave a choice today half the class got up but half stayed
Alta Rose / 2 - What's the problem with the carpet?
diane - mine too...i've added 5 new to the mix, but these kids have been hounding each other (some of them) for three years now.
brad - I completely gave it up in third. Maybe they're too big?
Sadie T - Fill me in here, I missed the beginning - you're avoiding the carpet because of behavior problems?
Michelle/3/or - I kept the carpet, I just didn't do much with the whole-group at it.
brad - I haven't tried giving a choice yet. STill working on how we sit in chairs. LOL
erin - This is how not to fall out of a chair!!!
erin - I always laugh when a third grader just falls...for no apparent reason...onto the floor.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Are they circling around the room? Around the desks? Or are they bringing their chairs to the rug area, Brad?
Kim/1/Ca - It's amazing how well a primary chair can propel a human body.............
Michelle/3/or - brad...thanks for asking. There's a bunch of stuff going on, but the big thing is that my son's dad wants to take custody...so big problems there.
Kim/1/Ca - (((Michelle))))
diane - (((michelle))) sorry to hear that
Sadie T - Wow Michelle, I hope things work out...
Alta Rose / 2 - Brad, that reminds me. Last year, my son's Gr. 3 teacher took some kids chairs away because they weren't sitting in them properly. Then later on that day, he tipped back in his OWN chair and fell!
brad - After Jan's advice, I arranged my chairs into a square with the students facing out. There's a small opening in one side of the square. This is the ONLY opening I let them go in and out of. It helps control traffic patterns and I can pick up on
erin - (((Michelle))
erin - What are his chances?
Kim/1/Ca - It's hard to concentrate on the classroom and its related issues when you are so stressed out at home, Michelle. I feel for you.
Alta Rose / 2 - I'm so sorry Michelle.
Mrs. J/2/3 - LOL, Alta
Michelle/3/or - not good chances. he'd have to have a good lawyer and put up a good fight. He's never had custody. but it's big stress.
Kim/1/Ca - They face OUT?
Mrs. J/2/3 - OK, I'm trying to visualize this, Brad. The kids are facing out, not towards the inside of the square?
brad - I can pick up on goofing off in the morning and dismissal. It also is easy to monitor as I walk on the outside or inside of the square. I think it curbs talking some, but not real sure. When we want to have a circle, I just say circle up and they all turn their chairs inward, "Presto, automatic circle."
erin - Prayers are with you Michelle
erin - But when are they facing out?
brad - They face out!
Mrs. J/2/3 - Oh, I see, they are out for independent work, and in for discussions?
diane - why not just keep them at their desks for independent work?
Michelle/3/or - how can they see everything if they are facing out??
Kim/1/Ca - That has to look WIERD (weird?) BRAD. Really weird. But I am intrigued............
Michelle/3/or - maybe i missed something?
erin - Adding the exclamation point didn't help us understand any better, brad. LOL
Sadie T - Brad you have chairs that are not attached to the desks then?
brad - They face out when working at seats. Turn chairs to calendar wall for calendar time. Turn to word wall for that time and overhead time. And turn inward for Morning Meeting and class discussion.
Michelle/3/or - I got up for some oj...
Sadie T - Sorry...stupid question. I get it.
naneb - send us some pictures Brad
diane - lol, erin
Mrs. J/2/3 - Michelle, a teacher in my building went through a similar situation last year. She "won". He gets standard visitation. Recently he has asked for overnights, but since he is "shacking up" the judge said NO! She was thrilled.
brad - hard to describe without drawing pic
brad - did I miss michelle's issues?
erin - Thanks brad. Now that makes sense...I think?
naneb - email me some pictures and I will post them on the yahoo site, Brad
diane - i totally don't get it...ew...that was close to valley girl speak
brad - I'd love too. What do you do? Standard camera; scan them?
erin - Can I ask a stupid question about the yahoo site. I am a member but how do you post a message? I feel like an idiot. No comments, brad
Michelle/3/or - thanks for your support, everyone. My ex doesn't even have "visitation rights", legally, as we have always worked all that out ourselves. But he is married and has a daughter with his wife, so they could look like the more "stable" home.
Kim/1/Ca - like, totally..........
Alta Rose / 2 - I think I get it, Brad.
erin - I was going to say "Grody to the max" earlier on our food messages
brad - honestly Michelle (and I'm just butting in here), you'd have to be on drugs or alcohol or beat them to not receive custody
diane - or gag me
naneb - you can use a digital camera or scan a regular picture or, take regular pictures and get them on disk or Cd
erin - gag me with a spoon
brad - what shows up best, nan. Some of those pix are better than others.
Mrs. J/2/3 - I like it, Brad, not sure if my partner will try that though! Are they side by side all around the circle then, since you mentioned just one opening?
Michelle/3/or - that's what I figure. but it still is hard on our son...and on me.
Kim/1/Ca - ......gag me with a spoon..........OHMIGOD!
brad - I have tables that sit two on a side. Does that answer your question?
diane - ohhhh...i think i get it...
erin - Sorry Kim...80s flashback
Alta Rose / 2 - When do you think it might be resolved, Michelle?
Kim/1/Ca - Big time.............ewww........
diane - the tables are in an open circle, yes?
Mrs. J/2/3 - Yes, brad, thank you. Now, I'm noodling.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Well, I think it would be an open square, right Brad?
brad - Diane, my tables are in a square with students facing out.
naneb - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mosaicteachers/ When you go to the yahoo site look in the box on the left below messages you will see Post, click on that and you can write a message
Kim/1/Ca - So if they DANCED then they would be SQUARE dancing, right?
erin - There's a show on Disney. PB&J otter...when they're thinking they sing "Noodle. do the noodle dance" reminded me of us
diane - circle, square...
naneb - digital pictures are usually better
Mrs. J/2/3 - How old is your son, Michelle?
brad - Erin, I sing that song all the time.
Mrs. J/2/3 - LOL, Erin. I
erin - Just checked I don't have anything that says POST. I wonder why
diane - so, i have to ask an actual work like question
Michelle/3/or - well, this was mostly last week and the week before. Then this last Sunday my son saw his dad for the weekend. When he came back, he said that his dad said that he won't try to take him away from me. That's the last I heard. Maybe he looked into it and found out it's a lost cause? I haven't spoken to him since. So, it's getting better. But this week we've been busy with appointments and such.
brad - Kim, you always knew I was a bit of an old-fashioned SQUARE
Mrs. J/2/3 - oops! I LOVE that show! Noodle, use your noodle, noodle, do the noodle dance!
Kim/1/Ca - Swing your partner, round and round.......ASK away, Diane
brad - I do too. It's one of the better quality cartoons on tb
brad - TV. LOL
diane - just didn't want to interrupt...
Michelle/3/or - my son will be 8 in December.
Sadie T - Diane, what's your question?
diane - i'm really struggling with my writer's workshop. i have kids that can barely read/write...
brad - Nothing like cartoons on tuberculosis
erin - My son is 8 ....he is very into family...it must be hard sometimes Michelle
Mrs. J/2/3 - My daughter is 8. I can't even imagine not having her with me ALL THE TIME! Even when she's pestering me!
Sadie T - Diane I am going to have that problem very soon...
brad - Diane, what grade are you?
Mrs. J/2/3 - What grade, again, Diane?
Kim/1/Ca - good question, diane.................I am braving those waters myself............GETTING them to write anything substantial is quite the challenge.
diane - i've never had kids struggle so to get ideas...it's been beyond what i've experienced in the past...i guess it's more a vent than question, but HELP!!
Alta Rose / 2 - What grade, diane?
diane - 3rd
Mrs. J/2/3 - Geez, Brad's always faster than me!
Sadie T - Diane, do they have trouble writing their ideas, or coming up with ideas, or both?
diane - this is the lowest class i've ever had - it's only my third year
Mrs. J/2/3 - Do you model, Diane?
erin - diane...I am struggling too. It seems as if no one has asked them to think...just always given them a prompt
naneb - my kids always start out writing about what ever I model, my pet, my brother etc
Kim/1/Ca - You know, I think we envision this cozy little situation in which they re all reading, writing, and collaborating...........editing, etc..............
diane - i model...i use what i learned at the writing project...i'm trying wondrous words and what you know by heart...it's just painful
brad - Diane, I highly recommend picking up "Writing Minilessons for Second Grade" The third grade one should be out soon, but the book is very practical and "scripts" lessons. They are good for beginning writers that are older. They are 4 Blocks , but anyone could use them
Michelle/3/or - I don't know if you've been doing this, or if it would help, diane, but I've been using a lot of what I've learned from Wondrous Words in teaching how writers get ideas...using other books, imagining how those writers got the ideas for their books, etc.
Mrs. J/2/3 - My kids want to get to the bottom of the page and then they are done. This is my struggle every year
Kim/1/Ca - I think that it takes awhile to get THERE from here.................modeling, practice, modeling, practice............
brad - Diane, Have you tried the 6 Traits board. Ask Ginny Hoover. She's middle school, but has good ideas you can adapt.
diane - erin...it is that way...i don't think they have been asked to think. they had a horrible first grade year...second grade caught them up the best she could
Alta Rose / 2 - The 4Square Writing Book is also a good one.
Sadie T - Mrs. J., that's why when my students bring a paper to me asking "Is this long enough?" I tell them it needs to be about ten minutes longer!
Mrs. J/2/3 - brb, gotta carry some papooses to beddy bye
brad - If my kids would shat out more than one sentence I'd be ecstatic, let alone get to the end of the page
Kim/1/Ca - G/night, Kim........!
diane - it's been a struggle in the past years, but these kids can't string a sentence together
erin - I have told my students..you are working on writing for 30 minutes...whatever you do don't come up and say "I'm done" YOu're not
Kim/1/Ca - hee hee hee........Brad said "shat." ........
Sadie T - Im, you are saying good night to yourself?
Sadie T - Sorry, I meant KIM....
erin - Bye Mrs J
Mrs. J/2/3 - LOL, Sadie. "I'm done" is the motto of my class. "There's no such thing as done" is mine.
brad - (It gets by the censors. tee hee. ..)
Kim/1/Ca - Sadie........Mrs. J is also a Kim
Mrs. J/2/3 - Well, it's those little composition books and they have to skip lines, Brad
Alta Rose / 2 - brb
brad - OOH, Mrs. J, change the writing paper. It can work a miracle. Swear
brad - Swear on a jar of mayo (that was for KIM)
erin - I had to do a prompt for a beginning 3rd assessment. I will start WW next week
Kim/1/Ca - So what is realistic for first grade writing? I get a few words, and possibly they might be related...............
Sadie T - Mrs. J., that's their motto in mine too. Do yours wave at you frantically across the room like it's an emergency, to tell you sweetly "I'm done" when you get over there?
brad - Diane, I have that problem too, which is why I have second graders who britch when's they have to do any writing other than filling in a blank.
diane - mostly i guess i felt like venting...i know we'll get there...i really believe in the wondrous words and wykbh...i use 6 traits....
Kim/1/Ca - <<<<gagging.......Brad said MAYO
brad - That sounds about right Kim. (Hey aren't you counseling me on going lower?)
Michelle/3/or - if they can do a sentence or two about a picture they draw, I think that's good at the beginning of first grade. (though I only taught it one year!)
brad - I was just saying to my partner across the hall, "They must do NO writing in first."
Kim/1/Ca - A sentence or two? (ROTFLMAO)
diane - at least i don't feel alone now...lol
brad - Michelle, around here, that's good beginning of SECOND grade. (actually, it's great)
Michelle/3/or - oops...maybe I forget what the beginning of first is like?
brad - I love the Wood Ray books, but they are a little lofty for primary. Just keep the spirit and philosophy
Michelle/3/or - At the end of first, I expected stories with some sort of beginning-middle-end
Kim/1/Ca - Actually..........my goal is to get them writing. REally writing. I just don't know how yet. I guess lots of PRAISE for the ones who spew forth a coherent phrase or thought.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Sadie, you mean your kids actually raise their hands and wait for you to come over? Mine interrupt my group to tell me less than sweetly that they are done
Kim/1/Ca - Maybe bribes.........hmmmmmmmmmm.......
Sadie T - Kim, I think that praise for a "coherent phrase or thought" is really important.
erin - I don't understand the "I'm done" all the time. It's for everything. What do they think they're going to be able to do?
brad - Kim, if they never had any personal choice writing in K or were stifled by spelling and conventions, then your firsties should be writing some letters that correspond with sounds for short three to four word sentences. That's what I could see in good literary Kindergartens at the END of the year.
Michelle/3/or - you know what? I love my school! the only kid who didn't know what was expected from him during WW on the first day was a transfer in from a private school! The other kids have been working hard since day 1!
Kim/1/Ca - They think YOU are going to provide entertainment. The dog and pony show for the soundbite mentality.............
brad - Something like "I L BR" for "I like bears."
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Brad.......I agree. Also, I made them some science journals so we can write together at first on a topic............having to do with science, of course. This week was apples and we drew and labelled the parts.
brad - And they might all be run together with no spacing between words. LOL
Mrs. J/2/3 - Ooh, Brad. In my district, we want to see that at end of K
Alta Rose / 2 - Yes, Brad, that's what a lot of during this time for many years of doing Gr. 1.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Oh, duh, that's what you said. Ignore me
erin - I think my class will drive me nuts with the questions. Every assignment requires at least 25 questions.
brad - That's what I think too Mrs. J., but if they do NO writing in K, (and mine don't in first either), I would think Kim's would be doing this in Sept and Oct
Mrs. J/2/3 - That
Kim/1/Ca - I need to find some sunflowers........that will be a sort of mini theme next week, draw and label parts, kidmade book, stories.......etc.
Alta Rose / 2 - Yours don't write in first, brad?
brad - Kim, when you're doing these science journals, are you having them copy what you write? And how do they do with that?
diane - michelle, i have to say that i love my school too...they do work hard. they look forward to 3rd because they get to "talk about books and stuff" (direct quote).
Kim/1/Ca - There are yellow "daisy" looking things that grow wild on the side of the road here..........but I don't think they are sunflowers..........
brad - barely alta. they fill in blanks and circle correct beginning sounds I think. LOL
Mrs. J/2/3 - I keep doing that! That's because, Erin, they don't listen when you give directions the first time. You are talking just for your own enjoment of hearing your own voice.
Michelle/3/or - every assignment in my class requires about 3 tattles before we can get started. I'm working hard at reducing them, though
erin - Our second graders write but it is highly structured and guided by the teacher. She does all the editing etc. so they have no independent abiltiy. I work a lot on that
brad - Michelle do they know the 2 B's?
erin - No the questions are genuine...they are just so unsure of themselves and want the "right" answer, although in my class there is rarely a "right" answer
Kim/1/Ca - They DRAW first, whatever is on the science table, depnding upon the topic. Things like shells, poinsettia, acorns, my snake, my tarantula, seeds, etc. THEN in Kinder, they would tell me what they wanted to say. I would write and cut up the words.
brad - IT is hard to get your class to follow your style after being in "traditional" school.
erin - I tell students if they tattle they have to hug the other person. Although, thinking about it, I haven't said it yet this year, b/c no one has tattled yet
brad - sometimes at first I give them too much freedom. I'm working on this. THey can't handle it.
erin - Yes brad...they need to open up and take chances and that makes them nervous
Michelle/3/or - barfing and bleeding? yeah
Alta Rose / 2 - It's hard to believe there are classes that don't have their kids write!
Kim/1/Ca - Eventually they do their own writing, copying my guide. THEN I encouraged them to write it "how your mouth says it." I think I will just start there............
brad - do you enforce it, michelle?
erin - Been there done that too brad
Kim/1/Ca - LOL........my tattle rule is "dead, dying, bleeding , or puking."
Michelle/3/or - erin...no one has tattled? wow!
diane - you're right, brad. i don't do centers at all...the kids have a hard time the first week believing that they have large chunks of time for reading and writing authentically. today i had to dash across the hall to the 2nd grade where the kids were struggling to stay on task. when i returned to my room i nearly cried at the sight of all of them reading intently...
erin - When a student says they have a cut (microscopic, usually) I always ask, "Live or die" If it's die, we'll miss you
Kim/1/Ca - A friend of mine has a "tattle box." They have to write it down.................
Mrs. J/2/3 - Mine is just bleeding and not breathing
Sadie T - Erin, I think that would keep them from tattling about the two B's, too, wouldn't it??
Alta Rose / 2 - Actually, mine have been pretty good. There have been about 3 tattles this year. I just say, "Sounds like a tattle!" and that's it.
Kim/1/Ca - succinct, mrs j
Mrs. J/2/3 - Of course, I have to qualify the bleeding with "gushing blood" otherwise papercuts count
erin - Not yet, but now I have cursed myself and will have a room full of tattlers on Monday. Thanks a lot everyone!!!! LOLOLOL
Michelle/3/or - Yeah, I ignore the tattles. Like I said, we're working on it. It's starting to be more bathroom requests now.
brad - Kim, I have that. I've never had an entry. It's a loooong form with lots of writing. As soon as they see that, it just doesn't become important anymore.
erin - Sadie, no we talk about that
Kim/1/Ca - OH YES..........the infamous PAPER CUT.........complete with full WHINE..........
diane - kim, that's too funny...my rule for interrupting my small groups is "bleeding, barfing, or dying?"
brad - You must bleed to get a Band Aid. They are gold, ya' know.
Mrs. J/2/3 - I love the live or die thing Erin. I'm going to use that
Sadie T - Erin I was joking...
diane - of course, i have had kids say that "yes they are dying, dying to talk to me...."
erin - I know Sadie LOLOL I forgot to add that LOL
Kim/1/Ca - well, diane...."dead" is important too..........public health issues, you know
erin - I add, "I'll call your mom so she can plan the funeral"
Michelle/3/or - oh yeah...I like the ones who try so hard to squeeze a drop of blood out of a paper cut.
erin - I love when classes have a sense of humor. My class this year really appreicates my sarcasm
Sadie T - LOL
brad - I find myself in Sept and Oct, saying at least a thousand times, "Barfing or bleeding?? No?? Goodbye." The clue is, if they leave their seat to tell you. Tattles rarely come with raised hands. But honestly, by Thanksgiving, I rarely hear a tatlle (My one classroom management success story. Yeah me!)
erin - Brad, patting himself on the back
Sadie T - (Is it just my monitor or is this color really light?)
Sadie T - (I feel like I'm talking in parathesis)
erin - Not too bad Sadie
brad - (psst you are)
Mrs. J/2/3 - It's really light, Sadie
erin - (what Sadie)
Kim/1/Ca - Sadie....you are looking a bit gray tonight. Feel alright?
Michelle/3/or - Sadie, you're like brad, only not so bold.
Sadie T - I meant in parenthesis
Mrs. J/2/3 - Brad, do you get any problems from parents that you won't "listen to
Mrs. J/2/3 - "listen to" their kids
Alta Rose / 2 - My kids love my son's sense of humour. Once in awhile, when he has to come into my classroom after school, he mixes up the numbers on the calendar. So the kid turns the number over and instead of 8 it might be 13. I never notice he's done it myself. The other day he wrote on the board--All day recess today. Have fun! They all laugh and say, "Kevin!"
Sadie T - (yes Michelle you're right - like Brad but not so bold)
brad - not yet, mrs. j. I've thought of this and I keep waiting, but so far no.
Kim/1/Ca - Good one, Sadie..........
Michelle/3/or - I just say "bleeding or barfing?". If I said "dying?", I think they would answer in the affirmative. I can't see dying, but I can see the other 2
Mrs. J/2/3 - Hmm, noodling again
brad - Just curious, what do you all do with class clowns?
Michelle/3/or - I like to walk by my best friend's room and make monkey faces at her kids from the doorway. She never catches me. hehe
erin - It depends if they are disrespectful or not
Alta Rose / 2 - Lol, Michelle!
brad - okay, not
Mrs. J/2/3 - I love coming here! I get so many good ideas to try. Course, then I'm devestated when I crash and burn. Although, maybe if I keep my class for more than 3 days in a row, we can make progress this week!
Kim/1/Ca - I do the Chicken Soup with Rice poem almost every morning? You know the one for each month? "In November's GUSTY GALE, I will flop my flippy tail..........." Well I have to explain Gusty Gale to them. The next thing you know, the "gusty gale" comes through the room and blows off half the calendar numbers. The kids have to re-sequence them. Hee hee hee........
diane - true, michelle, and i have to watch the dying this year...i have a child who is terribly ill...not sure of her life expectancy...i don't use dying in my room these days
erin - If they are joking back and forth with me, I don't mind. But if they are disrupting the class I tend to be pretty strict
brad - Kim, you're so clay-ver
Kim/1/Ca - rrr
erin - Mrs J, keep trying. I always crash and burn
Sadie T - I have an unusually hard-working class clown this year. One day I praised him for being on task and didn't know how he'd react... he stood up and took a big bow, then got back to work.
erin - But that's probably because I'm always trying new things
Michelle/3/or - Thinking of what you said, diane, I also have 2 boys who recently lost their fathers unexpectedly. So "dying" wouldn't go over well in my class either.
diane - i love to torment the 4th graders from the hallway myself...
erin - I just had a teacher tell me, regarding standards, I don't care what they say, I have this textbook and I'm not changing the way I teach. All rightly then
Sadie T - Wow, Diane, that's sad. Do your students know that the student is so ill?
brad - She's not really disrespectful, besides the occasional calling out. Sometimes though I'm tempted to indulge her because I want her to see how silly she's being. The other day, I came up to her when she was out of her seat. I pretended I was a maitre-d' and said, "Let me show you to your seat," took her by the arm and said, I think you'll like your table, blah, blah blah. Well she hammed it up and acted like she was blind. Not too many kids noticed, but she loved it. Should I have done that?
Mrs. J/2/3 - I have a problem with never really being satisfied. I think part of our noise problem right now is because we have windows lining two walls of our room and we are on a very busy street
erin - brad...is she able to settle back down? I think you handled it great. I do things like that.
brad - Erin, I wasn't aware the publishers of all the textbook series visited her children and were aware of their abilities
Kim/1/Ca - Well, Brad......it probably cut the repetition of the routine a bit................ "where are you supposed be?" "get back in your seat" etc.
erin - It shows she is comfortable with you and that she has a great sense of humor
diane - sadie, yes and no...she has a pacemaker that requires care in her physical play, but i'm not sure that they really get it. i had a child with md last year...his illness is progressing really fast, so he is the more noticable student. we only have 100 kids, so these things do really stand out
Mrs. J/2/3 - I think you made your point, Brad, and you didn't humiliate her. I think it's good if a teacher can joke with their class once in a while.
erin - I know, can you believe it? I was shocked
Alta Rose / 2 - Yes, brad, I think as long as things don't get out of control it's fine. My daughter's favourite teachers are the ones who have a sense of humour. It's important.
brad - sometimes erin. Just curious. I think she just really craves attention and I'm trying to give it to her, but I should probably only do it when she's "good" HUH?
brad - I figured this once didn't hurt. And I'm really good at ignoring her when she's "playing dumb"
erin - As long as a student can stay on track I go along, but if they get more and more hyper I don't joke around with them
Sadie T - That's what I try to do with my sometimes-disruptive sometimes-harding-working class clown - praise him every time he's doing well.
brad - So I forgive myself now. Thanks I am cleansed, blessed, blah, blah, blah. Hail Mary and all that.
erin - Sign of the cross, holy water
Kim/1/Ca - My class clown is named Luis. He pronounces it Louis.
Sadie T - It ends up disrupting the class a bit because he really loves the attention and makes a big deal out of it. But, since it means everyone notices that I've praised his GOOD behavior, it seems to be working alright.
erin - Your penance is to have your students sit on the carpet on Monday
brad - nan left without saying goodbye.
Kim/1/Ca - He is a real card. Oh brother....but, I think he likes me...................
erin - She was checking yahoo for me. I hope she comes back
Mrs. J/2/3 - I was just thinking that, Brad. Hope she's ok with the storm
brad - I had this clown's brother last year and he was the same way until some time with me and a few phone calls home
Kim/1/Ca - Today I had to come down on him for being loud while I was testing. I guess he was testing. The wind was out of his sails when he lost the rest of his free time.
erin - I have one boy in my class who I keep telling that if I ever need someone in charge of (Whatever he brought up) he'll be first on my list. He laughs and the class loves it
brad - Oh, I didn't even think that Mrs. J. YOu're right.
diane - so...i'm still in recovery from the parent that let me know at back to school night last night that she doesn't like me reading to the kids
brad - oh that's right, diane. Keep going, my child.
erin - Oh diane...that's right I just read that tonite
Mrs. J/2/3 - I tell them, if I need a police officer, they will be first on my list
Kim/1/Ca - WHAT? diane.......HUH? Go over that one again........
erin - brad...you're scaring me.
Alta Rose / 2 - diane, i didn't even know how to respond to that.
Sadie T - Diane, that's really sad that the parent didn't get it.
erin - Hi eilene
diane - fortunately the other parents in the room looked at her like she was insane...
Sadie T - Hi Eilene!
Alta Rose / 2 - Hi Eilene.
diane - hi eilene
eilene - Hello, everyone!
brad - that's bizarre. YOu should sent some literature her way on importance of read aloud, including our very own mae's gazette article. Would she be the type to read it?
Mrs. J/2/3 - It would be nice if they get it, but do they really need to get it. You are doing what you know is right. The school supports you
Mrs. J/2/3 - i, Eilend
erin - At least the other parents have a clue and support you
Mrs. J/2/3 - Gosh, I'm messing up a lot tonight. I meant, Hi, Eilene!
eilene - That's okay, mrs. j. I understood
Michelle/3/or - did she give you a reason why?
Mrs. J/2/3 - I'm blaming it on the sudafed
Alta Rose / 2 - I was just going to say what Brad suggested. Do you have anything you could send home to help her understand?
diane - i think they do need to get it...this child does nothing...he is not invested in school at all...i believe because of her attitude.
Michelle/3/or - (
Michelle/3/or - oops. didn't mean to send that..
diane - no reason why...just a terse "hrmmph" wierd
Kim/1/Ca - so her failure to parent properly becomes a problem on YOUR part................grrrrrr.........what a doofus.
brad - really, michelle? ( I thought that was our secret signal for Kim's gone off the deep end)
diane - i will send her material home, but to be honest i was pretty clear and direct...i'm actually pretty articulate when not typing...( :
Mrs. J/2/3 - It is probably her attitude about school in general, then diane. Not just the read aloud. She is sending the message that school is unimportant. That is the real issue
Alta Rose / 2 - It's important for so many reasons-It's hard to know where to begin to try to educate her!
Michelle/3/or - we had Open House this week...Goal-Setting Conferences next week. We will be going over the reading strategies from MOT at those conferences.
Alta Rose / 2 - So what did you say, diane?
Kim/1/Ca - ME? I've gone off the deep end, Mr. "Puts MAYO on his pizza for the love of god and all that is holy........"
erin - We have Back to School Night next week
brad - I do not, Kim. I detest mayo
diane - i did teach her daughter a few years ago...makes me wonder if she's angry about something. she did think daughter was tag...but she isn't...i'm wondering if there is a grudge there
erin - I have to do the Standards Based Report Card part. Hope I don't get attacked too badly
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, diane.......did you give her your "Incredulous" look?
brad - diane you may have just hit the nail on the head
brad - Tag, you're not it.
erin - No although brad is bizarre he does not do the Mayo
Mrs. J/2/3 - It's sad to be jaded already. My first instinct was to say, why try to educate her? Are you going to make an impact? Would your time be better spent just trying to reach the student?
Sadie T - LOL Brad
Alta Rose / 2 - tag? (Sorry, the Canadian doesn't understand!)
Kim/1/Ca - Alright..........so who did the MAYO on the pizza?
Mrs. J/2/3 - I think you can make a difference for the student and override her impact
Sadie T - tag = talented and gifted
diane - oh alta, i mentioned the strategies, learning how to think and understand our thinking, learning about inflection and fluency, learning to love reading for the pleasure of reading, etc, etc
Alta Rose / 2 - Thanks.
brad - Kim, my eyebrows can get really high with my "incredulous look" How about yours?
erin - Someone, Michelle? saw it on t.v.....Japan I think
Alta Rose / 2 - And none of it sank in?
erin - My jaw drops on my incredulous look
Michelle/3/or - huh? what, erin?
Kim/1/Ca - OOOhhh, yeah..............tinged with a bit of "are you really that ignorant or are you having a reallly bad day?" But in a NICE way, cuz you know these are PARENTS, after all..........
Alta Rose / 2 - How about vocabulary? Story structure...and on...and on...and on....
Michelle/3/or - i'm slow reading tonight.
erin - WHO brought up the Mayo story first?
diane - not sure mrs j, but i'll try...the first day of school she reintroduced me to her child as "the one who doesn't read or learn like her other two..." of course, this was not only in front of him but a roomfull of other parents...why would he try with that kind of intro?
erin - Kim is accusing brad of things he hasn't done
Michelle/3/or - oh, yeah. it was me. i saw it on tv
erin - Although maybe he has and is just not admitting it...I don't know anymore
Kim/1/Ca - Oral language modeling, sense of story and structure, developing listening skills and mental imagery...............
Kim/1/Ca - that's okay, erin......he has certainly done SOMETHING..............
Mrs. J/2/3 - Because you will show him that you believe in him and know he can do it, Diane
erin - Thanks Michelle. We can sleep easy tonite
brad - Kim, why are you yapping about that when we have mayo and facial expressions to discuss??
erin - Kim...and I'm sure that something has involved mayo...
Kim/1/Ca - yap yap yap
Alta Rose / 2 - Well, diane, if you've explained the reasons why read-alouds are important, and maybe sent info home, I guess there's a point where you have to let go. (Easier said than done, I know.)
Sadie T - That's Brad, always keeping us on topic....
brad - I think I read an article a year or so ago about japan fashioning bacon from raw sewage. No kidding. Now we can close subject. LOL
diane - true, mrs j...i never give up on a challenge...perhaps i can even convince kim to try pesto mayo
eilene - Question: On the MOT boards, there's that little poem thingy that stresses the importance of reading daily... Is there a Spanish version of that somewhere?
Kim/1/Ca - <<<<<,running from the room for the bathroom..........gee thanks brad.......
Mrs. J/2/3 - I don't know, Diane. Now THAT'S a stretch!
Michelle/3/or - let's see...what kind of science experiment can my kiddos do with mayo? maybe..."Liquid or Solid?" in my Matter unit?
diane - okay...too gross, brad
Kim/1/Ca - ewwww michelle.............(shuddering)
eilene - ack! mayonaisse expirements, that's gross
brad - eilene, I can't tell you the site, but you can have it translated if it's not too long, free on the web. do a search for "free translation" I"ve done it before, but forgot to bookmark.
Kim/1/Ca - is it a good translation?
Michelle/3/or - oooo.....do you get "the Reading Teacher"?
eilene - thanks brad, I'll just babblefish it, then.
Kim/1/Ca - YES
Sadie T - Computer translations usually are not good!!
Michelle/3/or - did you read the article on Aliteracy? I liked the poem!
Sadie T - I have trouble with the MOT boards but if someone posts the poem to the profreading board, I could try to translate it if it would help...
eilene - I have some people at work that can translate it, but I was just trying to save them the trouble
Kim/1/Ca - I haven't gotten it yet.........today?
brad - We have an interpreter in the building (ESL school) but she's not very trustworthy either. So six of one,. . .
Sadie T - Or post the Bablefish translation and see if it makes sense
Mrs. J/2/3 - Our bilingual aide said when you try and do computer translations words get mixed up, and stuff and the meaning can be changed
Michelle/3/or - no, a few days ago.
Kim/1/Ca - hmmmmm........i wonder where mine is........got the JAAL but not TR
Kim/1/Ca - I mean RT
eilene - I have a friend who teaches bilingual and said the same thing about Harry Potter. She said it was like they fed it through a computer... She actually needed a Spanish dictionary for that
Sadie T - Mrs. J. that's true. I've seen a letter in Spanish that says an IEP team must consist of 5-year-olds... another that says students who are caught cheating will be executed. YIKES>
Sadie T - Mrs. J. that's true. I've seen a letter in Spanish that says an IEP team must consist of 5-year-olds... another that says students who are caught cheating will be executed. YIKES.
brad - TRL with Carson Daly. I LOVE BRITNEY SPEARS WOOOOOO
Michelle/3/or - yeah, i got my issue a few days ago.
Sadie T - Oops, didn't mean to post that twice
Michelle/3/or - no, wait..maybe i got it a while ago but just finally picked it up
Alta Rose / 2 - My collegue married a man from England and she said there were changes in Harry Potter (from the original) when it got to the U.S.
Kim/1/Ca - (snort of disgust at the mere thought of BRAD drooling over Britney Spears)
Michelle/3/or - it's the September issue
Mrs. J/2/3 - Ok, that's more vomit inducing than mayo, Brad
brad - You all are very scholarly with your referred journals. Can we get back to extra chairs and fake bacon please?
diane - indeed...ewwwwwww
Kim/1/Ca - brb let me check my pile........
eilene - oh, that sounds wonderful, brad... My brain is mush tonight, refuses to think anymore
erin - LOL at brad
brad - I'm a slaaaave for her. LOL
Sadie T - (Brad: please state the topic of tonight's chat. [This is a test.])
brad - You people!! I have a ten year old daughter in my home. I get my share of Mr. Timberlake too. BRB, thirsty at all this bacon talk
erin - Brad...how do you have this much energy this late at night????????
erin - Or maybe it's just delirious ramblings
Sadie T - Erin, yes, it must be delirious ramblings...
Michelle/3/or - it's in the Instructional Materials section. the title is "Good Beginnings"
Sadie T - Kind of like me.
Mrs. J/2/3 - I would like to buy her a WHOLE outfit instead of the partial ones she's prone to wear. You'd think someone with all her money could afford to buy the WHOLE outfit. Y U C K !!!!
Kim/1/Ca - No RT. sob.
erin - Her outfits are truly tasteless.
Kim/1/Ca - yes.....this new school has so much on my plate.
Sadie T - (passing some dishtowels to Kim to dry her tears)
Michelle/3/or - no September issue? must be California mail.
Alta Rose / 2 - How so, Kim?
erin - Is there mayo on that plate, Kim?
Kim/1/Ca - Sorry..didn't mean to go off task.
Kim/1/Ca - The usual stuff coupled with being out of my element. But things are getting better.........I think.
Michelle/3/or - you know...I sorted through the archives to find the meaning of Dish Towels. it was highly disappointing.
brad - I am just so glad to sit down and talk with all of you tonight. This has been a truly stressful week. At one point, I just walked out, found the first available person (principal) and said, "You have to take over for a few or I'll go off" and walked away (I should've stayed to see her face) Tomorrow is my open house (wish you all could come) so the weekend will go fast. I need to let off some steam.
erin - What was the meaning?
Michelle/3/or - no huge scandal. no scarlet letter. just a misunderstanding
Kim/1/Ca - WE have to document the CA standareds in our lesson plans. time consuming and I resent it.
Sadie T - Brad, you actually said that to the principal?
Alta Rose / 2 - I don't blame you, Kim.
Kim/1/Ca - I will be there in spirit, Brad.
brad - Kim, that's story of life here. We've always had to put standards in plans. Join club.
Sadie T - Hi Student_teach!
Mrs. J/2/3 - Hi, student teach
eilene - brad, I feel for you. I had a rough week as well..not that rough though!
Michelle/3/or - you have open house on a SATURDAY???? ours was Tuesday. very exhausting
diane - hi student teach
student_teach - does anyone here teach early childhood or early childhood special education
Kim/1/Ca - That doesn't make it right.................grrrrrrrr.........
eilene - We have to put in the state standards too. Hi, student teach
brad - yes, sadie, actually said it. she didn't seem to mind. Truth I probably would've went to chill out if NO One had come down the hall. That
Mrs. J/2/3 - do you suppose that administrators will wake up and realize that you can write down all the standards you want but that does not equate with good teaching or student achievement
brad - how @#$%ed I was
Alta Rose / 2 - Open House on Saturday? School related?
diane - lol...this is only our second week...our first full week...today i honestly thought it was the 3rd or 4th...
Sadie T - I don't think so, Student_teach, but we're all teachers.
erin - Brad, we're there for you
Alta Rose / 2 - So what was upsetting you, brad? The students?
Kim/1/Ca - first grade here.........kinder experience though.......
Alta Rose / 2 - Sorry, I'm being snoopy.
student_teach - i need some writing examples from teachers for one of my classes
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, WASSUP Bradley?
brad - Worse yet, I'm supposed to have them posted in my room. I keep saying, "Are you retarded? The kids don't know what that means!! They don't care if they're posted!! How does that make them better learners?" What some people won't come up with in the name of looking 'business-like'
brad - No,
Sadie T - Brad, I post mine, and explain them at the beginning of class.
brad - No, Alta, Open House because I just bought my first home this summer.
Sadie T - They understand the explanation and can use that to refer to them later. It helps.
Alta Rose / 2 - Oh. (Blushing)
brad - Sadie, you're high school. I'm second grade. LOL
Alta Rose / 2 - Student_Teach, just hold on a second....
Kim/1/Ca - Same here, bRad...........i think it is soooooooooo stupid.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Don't feel bad, Alta, I thought he meant school too
erin - I take it the retarded comment didnt' go over too well, huh, brad
Michelle/3/or - oh...I thought you were talking about school, brad. I couldn't understand how they could make you do that. *lightbulb goes off above my head*
Sadie T - Brad, my students don't speak English, so it's not that different!
erin - I thought the same thing Michelle and Alta
brad - I say something like, "Today, we're going to learn the "doubles plus one" strategy to do addition" but I DON'T say, "Today, you will learn to add and subtract one-digit problems up to nine fluently using any strategy" LOL
brad - true, sadie, true. still. . .
Kim/1/Ca - I don't have any writing samples handy..........why not visit a local classroom? Ask a local teacher?
erin - I show my students the standards and read it to them...but we don't have to post them
student_teach - i did that and the teacher couldn't give me any specific writing examples because of the confidentiality issue
brad - No, remember I posted about School Open House. Had 2 of 22 parents show up. Life in the inner city. LOL. Last year it was 3 out of 23
erin - Much as I love you guys and our discussion I have to go because I have class in the morning
Mrs. J/2/3 - I'm signing off gang. My eyes are getting droopy
erin - Yes, Educational research and statistics or whatever...it's not very fun
brad - Tell her to white out the names and xerox them. Duh. She should've thought of that.
Alta Rose / 2 - Student_teach, they should be able to give you some samples with no name.
diane - night erin
erin - Plus the teacher has a strong Chinese accent so I can't understand him...........
Kim/1/Ca - Yes she can..........just photocopy with something to cover the name.
Sadie T - I had 38 parents show up for Open House...
erin - YIPPEEE!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait
Alta Rose / 2 - Night Mrs. J!
Michelle/3/or - wow. I feel better now about having exactly half...12 of 24...show up. I figured I didn't have a big turnout because many of the parents knew me from 1st grade.
erin - Bye bye all
eilene - night, mrs. j
erin - Bye Mrs J
Alta Rose / 2 - And Erin!
brad - nite, erin, keep me posted
Kim/1/Ca - Me too........too too tired ........... i will see you on the board tomorrow...............
diane - night mrs j
Michelle/3/or - goodnight, erin.
Mrs. J/2/3 - Bye, everyone. "See" some of you Sunday morning on yahoo
eilene - and erin!
Michelle/3/or - and mrs.j
Sadie T - Good night Erin and Mrs. J. and Kim!
Alta Rose / 2 - Take Care, Kim!
brad - kim, no way, et tu brute
erin - Bye Kim, caught you before I left
Michelle/3/or - bye kim!
diane - i had half as well, michelle, one of the drawbacks to one class per grade...they think they know me already
brad - And Mrs. J? Someone has to sit with me through this soda
brad - hey where's that nut sylvia?
Sadie T - Soda? A-HA, I *knew* Brad must have had caffeine.
Michelle/3/or - who knows? she could still show up...she seems to show up late
brad - cafffeine is a food group. I've also had two cups of coffee about an hour and a half ago
Alta Rose / 2 - You say soda....I say pop!
diane - i gave up caffeine a few weeks ago...it's been hard
Michelle/3/or - brad...exactly how many food groups do you think there are? You've claimed HoHo's, salad dressing, and soda all to have their own group....
brad - okay, so that leaves, alta, sadie, michelle, who else? These are good people. The party's still on for at least a little while longer
Alta Rose / 2 - It was years before I knew what a soda was. Always read about it in the Archie comics. I thought it was icecream.
Michelle/3/or - i say pop too
brad - (I say Pop too Alta. I'm joking with 'soda')
Alta Rose / 2 - Like an icecream float.
diane - hey...what am i, chopped liver??
brad - That Jughead, he's a scream.
eilene - me! me! me!
Michelle/3/or - alta...same with me....i thought it was like an Italian Soda, actually
Alta Rose / 2 - I always hear soda on TV.
brad - Diane!! Okay, I just didn't want to be left with people I didn't know.
brad - Oh, yeah, and there's eilene. Okay, this is good
brad - I think student-teach is still here but I don't know if she's paying attention
brad - Michelle I thought same thing
diane - i'm just teasing...been with moody third grade girls all week..."if you're going to be her friend, you can't be my friend"
eilene - I say soda, or just plain Coke
brad - I always was rooting for Betty but thought Veronica was hot. Now that you know that about me, we will never meet and I'm changing my name
Alta Rose / 2 - She's probably wondering if she still really wants to go into the profession if this is all teachers have to do on a Friday night!
Michelle/3/or - then my mom went to visit relatives in rural missouri, and they called it "sody" with a Y
diane - lol, alta...
Sadie T - (Alta, don't mention that it's all we have to do)
Sadie T - (that's a secret)
Sadie T - Speaking of "all we have to do"... I've got to go. Good night!
Michelle/3/or - well...I went to oktoberfest! but couldn't drink much cuz I had to drive home. Had 1 beer early on...and here i am. (my feeble attempts to claim to have a life)
brad - what did I miss earlier? before the talk about mayo. Something about desks and chairs. Hey did Jan or Judy come by tonight?
Alta Rose / 2 - Take Care, Sadie.
Alta Rose / 2 - No, neither one was here.
Michelle/3/or - sadie...you too?? aww.... well, goodnight.
brad - Sadie, I was just singing your praises!
diane - at oaks park, michelle? or mt angel??
Michelle/3/or - neither one, brad
Sadie T - (See - Brad tries to get you back on topic now because he thinks I've left already.)
Michelle/3/or - mt. angel, diane
eilene - We went straight out drinking after work.. From 3.30 pm to 9.00 pm... am totally exhausted
diane - i've never been to that one
Michelle/3/or - it's only 9 miles from my house (mt. angel)
Sadie T - (it's okay, Brad, you guys can get back on topic now. I'm leaving.)
brad - The truth is, Sadie, I don't want your opinion on educational matters, only on bacon and other food.
Sadie T - LOL
diane - lol
Alta Rose / 2 - Student_Teach, what year are you in?
diane - oh, now see what you've done...she's gone and logged off
brad - eilene, that was a mighty long drink
Alta Rose / 2 - Lol.
brad - sadie's a tease. she'll be back. LOL
eilene - yes it was.... it sure was well deserved though
Michelle/3/or - she was looking kinda pale anyway.
diane - funny, michelle
brad - LOL michelle
Alta Rose / 2 - brb
brad - she's mild salsa. I'm ZESTY
Michelle/3/or - I thought you were SALTY brad
eilene - Well, can I be picante?
brad - Speaking of salsa, I like it to be chunky; I hate that watery crap
diane - i would have said "spicy" brad
Michelle/3/or - I'll be guacamole. smooth
diane - me...i'm a hummus fan
brad - my wife hates guacamole michelle
brad - I've never had hummus
diane - hey...i'll send you hummus, you send me ho hos
Alta Rose / 2 - I don't like guacamole, either.
Michelle/3/or - but I'm NICE guacamole.
brad - diane, you've never had ho ho's?
eilene - I love guacamole!!
diane - never even seen ho hos...we decided it was a regional thing
brad - you have to admit; guacamole is not attractive
Michelle/3/or - diane! there are too hoho's in Oregon! all over the place!
brad - it's made by HOSTESS. Hostess is not regional.
Alta Rose / 2 - Join the club, diane!
Alta Rose / 2 - Join the club, diane!
diane - no...i swear i've never seen them
brad - Alta's very excited someone else has never seen ho ho's
Michelle/3/or - ok, ok. you're right.....hmmm...well, I don't want to be food too much, maybe
Alta Rose / 2 - We have lots of other Hostess products.
brad - michelle, are you and diane far apart?? Drive your butt up there with a box of ho ho's
diane - i could have sworn we have discussed this and someone said they weren't here in the northwest...
Alta Rose / 2 - Lol, Brad!
Michelle/3/or - look near the twinkies and ding dongs, diane
brad - she's at that hotel all the famous people go too
eilene - I was never fond of those snowball things...
Michelle/3/or - my uncle lives near diane...I should stop by
brad - eilene, you probably don't like coconut
Michelle/3/or - we ate hoho's DAILY when I went to high school in Troutdale
diane - weird. i guess i don't find myself in the twinkie isle much
eilene - no, not really
brad - Michelle's right. Look around the Twinkies. (also by Hostess)
brad - that's what snowballs were. coconut
Michelle/3/or - i don't like the snowball things either. but I'm not a big marshmallow fan
brad - wife hates marshmallows too, michelle
diane - i used to love the snowballs as a kid...especially when they were died funny colors for holidays....green for st patrick's day
eilene - I eat ho ho's layer by layer... it's an adventure!
diane - your wife is picky, brad...no guacamole, no marshmallow
Alta Rose / 2 - I heard Ho Hos mentioned on a sitcom and so did my daughter. So we looked for them, but no luck. We did find Swiss Rolls, which my son proudly calls his "Ho Hos." (Sorry, brad!)
Michelle/3/or - we would unroll them, in high school. like a sleeping bag
brad - that's very intriguing. I have a paper around here somewhere that tells what kind of person you are by how you eat your Oreo.
brad - actually she's not, diane
Michelle/3/or - I've seen that, brad. I think it was in the Oregonian once.
diane - does she share your love of dressings?
brad - Ho Ho's like a sleeping bag. ROFLMAO. I don't know why that hit me so funny, but I'm truly laughing.
Michelle/3/or - how does she feel about mayo?
brad - They are like that (sleeping bag) though
brad - Wife is a thousand island freak. Likes mayo, but has to be real, can't be nonfat
Alta Rose / 2 - Brad, how is your wife feeling--Being pregnant?
Michelle/3/or - I like 1000 isle. that's my dressing de jour.
diane - yes, is she liking her ho hos with mayo?
brad - She is hitting that sleep all the time stage now. She slept a LOOOOT with my son. (all that extra time growing the @#$% I guess. LOL)
Michelle/3/or - i cannot figure out what swear word you may have just used, brad.
brad - I can't believe you can
brad - I can't believe you can't type p e n i s
Michelle/3/or - lol
Alta Rose / 2 - Due in December, did you say?
brad - yes, december 15th. Boy (she's mad at me; she says I only make boys)
Alta Rose / 2 - Is this one a boy too?
Michelle/3/or - remind her how much money you'll save on clothes and hair cuts etc.
Alta Rose / 2 - Didn't you just say you have a 10 year old daughter?
brad - I tell her it's that extra dip and swirl at the end. . . (hope I'm not getting too dirty for the room)
eilene - lol, reminds me of that Seinfeld episode...
brad - daughter is step, but I've been with since one so I don't call her step.
diane - no...but i did just get a visual...using mot strategies as i read the board
brad - what Seinfeld?
eilene - with the twirl at the end, the one that Jerry said he invented, that putty used, and that George used
Michelle/3/or - oh, yeah. i remember that, eilene
brad - I must've missed that one (and I thought I'd seen them all). It doesn't come to mind.
Alta Rose / 2 - Didn't see it.
eilene - I've seen them all. My favorite is Elaine: "Maybe the dingo ate your baby."
brad - One of my faves---The yada-yada
Alta Rose / 2 - brb
Michelle/3/or - I don't remember that one, eilene...but the yadda yadda...that's a classic!
brad - Of course Soup Nazi and The Contest are good too. I also like Bizarro Jerry
eilene - "We had the crab bisque... yadda yadda yadda. I never saw him again."
brad - Eilene, that is my favorite part of my fave episode. LOL
diane - i'm falling asleep guys....
Michelle/3/or - diane...you have an assignment...
Michelle/3/or - report back on hoho's next week!
diane - what's that, michelle, go out and purchase ho hos?
eilene - I know all of Elaine's lines.... for some odd reason
brad - So does anyone on here have any idea why they were talking about desks when I came in?
brad - GET OUT!!
Michelle/3/or - it had just come up, brad
diane - all right...i'll do a full scale analysis
eilene - "He just took it out."
Michelle/3/or - we really weren't talking about them
diane - night all
eilene - Night, diane!
Michelle/3/or - goodnight, diane
brad - My wife and I are always Jerry and Elaine. I caught on to Seinfeld because people kept telling mek, "there's this guy on tv, and he acts just like you will all your theories and stuff."
brad - nite, diane
brad - correction--you WITH all your theories and stuff
Alta Rose / 2 - Well, I'm fading, too. It was our first 5 day week, this week. Whew! And we're getting up early to take the kids to the zoo tomorrow.
eilene - What I don't understand about Seinfeld, is why sometimes they have to be buzzed in, and then other times they just appear at Jerry's apartment
Michelle/3/or - huh...i didn't even notice the error...i read it that way to begin with
Michelle/3/or - maybe they were at kramer's?
brad - so that was in college, I started watching, yadda, yada, yada, it's a number one show
Michelle/3/or - you going, alta?
Alta Rose / 2 - Yup. Goodnight! Talk to you next week!
brad - bye alta. I'm always reading your post cuz your situations' similar to mine this year. see ya
brad - why do I always forget this until the chat's almost over. Eilene, you're Michelle's friend from HP board, right??? LOL,
Michelle/3/or - oh...we were talking about the fact that we got rid of our own desks. because kim mentioned that hers is a mess.
brad - You all must think I'm drunk
eilene - yes, I am...
brad - I am sooo happy without my desk this year
Michelle/3/or - I'm starting to wonder, brad.
Michelle/3/or - about your drunkeness, not about eilene
brad - I always think, "Who's this Eilene person? She sounds familiar" And then I don't remember until we've been talking for ages
brad - It's Grace's apartment
Michelle/3/or - i always remember when you told me to lock my liquor cabinet and through the key your way...
eilene - I like my desk, it's my refuge
Michelle/3/or - what's grace's apartment?
Michelle/3/or - isn't it will's apartment?
eilene - "Just Jack!"
Michelle/3/or - do you mean "department"?
brad - My grandmother had a sister named Grace who owned an apartment building. I always forgot that fact growing up. When people would say Graces' apartment, I would always say, "But Grace lives in a house." It was something I could never manage to remember. So now things like that in my family, we call "Grace's apartment."
brad - "jack 2000"
eilene - I watch too much television, methinks
brad - Will and Grace is my ab fave show on right now.
eilene - I actually like Jack and Karen better than Will & Grace
brad - "Honey, honey, what's this? What's this?"
Michelle/3/or - I'm really trying to stop watching most tv. I tell myself I won't watch any new series that I don't already watch.
eilene - I want to check out that new series, Boomtown. Looks intense
brad - LOL, Michelle I've tried that a couple times. Oh well at least I don't sit down with the Fall Preview anymore and plot my day like I did growing up. LOL
Michelle/3/or - It took me forever to find out whether that voice was the actress's actual voice. finally heard her real voice a couple weeks ago.
brad - I've been really good the past few years
brad - I heard her real voice today. Nothing like Karen.
eilene - I don't watch that much, really... just the standards, Frasier, Scrubs, etc.
Michelle/3/or - scrubs is so funny!
eilene - I saw all four of them on Charlie Rose (pbs). pretty good interview
brad - Scrubs is a standard??? LOL. It's good the couple times I've caught it. Just kidding
brad - Eilene, I missed that!! I would've creamed to see that
eilene - I love Scrubs... that intern has the best inner-dialogue I've ever heard
Michelle/3/or - i don't watch it much...but I like that one doctor...Cox..
brad - (again too dirty for room?)
eilene - tsk tsk, brad, you're going to get reprimanded
brad - (what am I talking about, these are the ladies who chased the AF pilots)
Michelle/3/or - is this what caffeine does to you, brad?
eilene - We did not chase them.. they just appeared there, one day...
brad - NO. I always joke I don't get drunk cause I'm awful all by myself, thank you.
brad - Like I've always said. I'd love for all of us to get together. What a riot.
Michelle/3/or - someday, someone's going to realize that this is not an actual "Professional Reading" chat and pull our plug.
brad - "Professional Bacon and Mayo chat"
eilene - Get together?? Vegas, anyone?
Michelle/3/or - yes. truly, they just appeared.
brad - Well, some of us on here are truly nutty. Others are more serious. You've got your sweet. You've got your sour. And then there's me--ZESTY
eilene - Bacon... did you know that corned beef was the closest thing the Irish could find to a rasher of Bacon, which is why CB became a staple of Irish cuisine in the US?
Michelle/3/or - not too much sour on the prof board, though. now, go to the main board....lemon convention!
brad - lemon convention? Corned beef?
eilene - I still would like to be Picante?
Michelle/3/or - didn't we once describe ourselves as...um...chili and cornbread?
eilene - ** oops should not have been a question
brad - I never read main board. what's going on
Michelle/3/or - eilene...looking for permission to be picante?
brad - Who is cornbread and why?
Michelle/3/or - I don't know. I haven't even been to the prof board in 3 weeks. but every time I check out the main board it's the same old thing
eilene - no, I just would like to clear it with everybody
brad - same old what michelle?
Michelle/3/or - remember, brad? or is it dipping bread into the ragout to savor it? i can't remember
brad - I remember that but I don't remember cornbread
Michelle/3/or - people arguing and choosing sides. then others laughing at the sides
brad - by the way, what was boss hogg up to tonite michelle
brad - really, michelle? Arguing about what?
Michelle/3/or - heck if I know!
Michelle/3/or - who knows? haven't you ever been there, brad?
brad - never, michelle
Michelle/3/or - like....what Juvie does in her spare time...
brad - Do what??
Michelle/3/or - it's so silly. then they take sides. and try to get one another banned.
brad - You're kidding.
Michelle/3/or - and someone starts yelling FLAME. sometimes out of nowhere.
brad - I only hang out on prof board, 4 blocks, 6 traits now, and classroom management/discipline.
Michelle/3/or - no! I'm not kidding! they are like children!
Michelle/3/or - I 've tried the 6 traits...but I just can't keep up with everything I'd like to
eilene - Oh! I wanted to tell you something, Michelle
brad - Sometimes I check out proteacher, but you have to be careful what you say over there sometimes. They come out of left field sometimes about things like "rewards" "flipping cards" blah, blah
Michelle/3/or - if you ever want a good laugh, try out the main board. maybe that whole board should be canceled
eilene - On the HP boards, they have downloadable "banners" that I think would make great bookmarks if I can get kinkos to copy them for me... You might want to take a peek
Michelle/3/or - what, eilene?
brad - You suggest soemthing to them and they flip out like, "Well I've always done it this way and it works for me and HOW DARE YOU act like you know it all."
Michelle/3/or - brad...that's a taste of how it is on the main board
Michelle/3/or - ok, eilene. maybe i will this weekend.
eilene - I don't really offer my opinion, because I have no experience to really back it up...
brad - So if I suggest there, I make sure I'm delicate with my wording and very self-deprectating, "Well I'm not perfect but. . . hope I"ve helped. . ."
Michelle/3/or - and then they take side....pro card-flipping, anti-card-flipping. and if you aren't on their side...you are an INSTIGATOR
brad - Eilene will offer her opinion on AF Pilots and picante
Michelle/3/or - so you see, brad, why people come to the prof board kinda shyly at first? they are half-expecting to get their heads bit off
eilene - Whenever those topics need to be clarified, yes, I will do the honors
eilene - What the@#$%is card flipping?
brad - One time I posted on another board and said something about it not being ESIA approved and they said, "You've given me a lot to think about now. I need to re-think this." LOL I might try it again sometime.
Michelle/3/or - Lee Canter's Assertive Discipline
eilene - *that would have been "helllllll-o"
Michelle/3/or - really brad? they really took it seriously. Interesting
brad - Most the time, there's a green, yellow, red traffic light card for each child. You start on green. If there's an infraction you flip to yellow. Another infraction you flip to red. Most link either rewards or consequences based on what card you're on.
brad - What would've been helllllo?
eilene - oh, I see... I don't usually do rewards
brad - what do you do eilene?
eilene - the vulgarity that got censored, brad
eilene - All the kids are entitled to friday free time at the beginning of the week...
Michelle/3/or - I don't do a lot with rewards, though I do have the kids in Groups and the groups can get points and win a treat. That's it. But it's more so I can get them to clean up quicker, or whatever.
Michelle/3/or - but not individual punishment/reward system. I'm really trying to use the Love and Logic approach mostly
brad - I will give that the flipping card thing can "work" but it's just not my style. I"ve seen it work in a Kindergarten. They let them have many chance before they flipped a card, and they only had two or three who landed on red at the end of the week. THey weren't always the same two or three. So if that's what you call "worked" .........
brad - Did you see Jan's post on that Michelle?
Michelle/3/or - I've seen in used in several 6th grade classrooms when I was a sub. It's too much for me to have to think about, though
eilene - if they can't live up to their responsibilities they lose "Points". If they lose about 25 points total then they lost their free time
Michelle/3/or - I don't think so, brad.
brad - not criticizing, eilene, but to me that's a reward/punishment thing
Michelle/3/or - is it on the prof board? is it recent?
brad - she posted some Love and Logic phrases for me and some others to try.
eilene - I was thinking that as I was writing that, brad...
brad - it's on class management or class discipline board. Title is Phrasing
Michelle/3/or - I'm still working my way...slowly...through the book. Almost finished with it.
eilene - I just don't like the stop sign thing...
Michelle/3/or - I feel like I need to rehearse some of those phrases...they don't always come to me at the right times.
brad - I was saying to hall partner today, that class discipline is ninety percent your tone and your language, both of which I need help on. I'm too sarcastic. I've tried some of jan's suggested phrasing this year, adn I feel so much better accomplishing the same thing but being "uplifting" about it.
Michelle/3/or - what's the stop sign thing?
brad - That's my opinion, by the way, would you agree? YOu've both been teaching longer than me
eilene - it's the red, yellow, green light thing
eilene - I haven't, brad... this is only my second year
Michelle/3/or - I've had the problem of being too sarcastic also. I really felt bad when teaching first grade. They didn't understand the humor in my sarcasm much.
Michelle/3/or - shoot...I've been teaching one year longer...that's not much
brad - Jan said to encourage intrinsic motivation the children need to FEEL their success so she suggested saying things like, "You got in line very quietly today. YOu must be so proud of yourself." Instead of, "I like the way you lined up." or "Look at how Johnny lined up."
eilene - I'm trying to be more positive, and cut down on my sarcasm too. but sometimes i really agree with the "be mean until december" old school way of thinking...
Michelle/3/or - I agree with you brad...I've been working on using a quiet, even tone of voice.
Michelle/3/or - that's what they say in Love and Logic, brad
eilene - that sounds like Positive Discipline in the Classroom
brad - Jan also helped me realize that it's part of my JOB not an annoyance to teach discipline. Cuts down on my stress level.
brad - I've talked to Jan a lot about this, can you tell? LOL
Michelle/3/or - So, you will be the first to recieve a copy of her book, eh brad?
Michelle/3/or - I'm excited for her book!
brad - I've probably already heard her book. LOL
Michelle/3/or - I think you have, brad.
brad - It'll be good. Jan really knows her stuff. And what I like is she's very practical and detailed in her approach.
brad - That helps
eilene - We had two firedrills today.
Michelle/3/or - really? we had 1. you got bonus!
eilene - ack!
brad - I think that's thunder. OOps yeah that's lightning. I should probably go anyway.
Michelle/3/or - ok. it's late anyway.
eilene - one for a.m. kinder, and one for p.m. kinder
eilene - okay, I should go too
brad - i wondered why 2
brad - nite all
Michelle/3/or - see you all soon.
eilene - Now brad, remember I'm Michelle's from the HP board
eilene - nite!
