judy3ca -
naneb - I guess we both managed to stay awake!!
judy3ca - ROFLOL, we must have sent that smiley face at the same time! And I'm barely awake!
naneb - If you didn't make the nonfiction convention notebooks then who did?
judy3ca - I think Sharon did.
judy3ca - She made the powerpoint presentation, right?
naneb - ROFL!! No, I did!!
judy3ca - LOL, well, it was ONE of you wonderful imaginary friends!
naneb - I got the pics from whoever did the notebooks
judy3ca - BRB....save blue for me.
naneb - I keep trying to give you the credit!! I think I thought it was someone with older students
naneb - Hi Sadie
Sadie T - Hi Nan!!
naneb - judy will be right back
Sadie T - What's up?
naneb - just trying to stay awake
naneb - what's up with you?
Sadie T - LOL
Sadie T - Were the nonfiction convention notebooks you were talking about w/Judy, on the yahoo site?
Sadie T - I'm trying to stay awake too.
Sadie T - Hello Brad!!
brad - Nan and Sadie, you're so tired these days. Can't imagine why.
naneb - Yes, Sadie they are, my kids are making them now, my student teacher has added lots of pages to them. I will try to get her pages to add to the ones on the site
naneb - Hi Brad
brad - Well I started with predictions this week, and, as usual, my students were like, "huh?" but I'll plug through
naneb - It has been a long week Brad, With a day off right in the middle for Lilli
Sadie T - Cool, Nan! I haven't looked at the yahoo site in a while. I'll have to go back there tonight.
brad - Yes, we are getting the remnants of Lilli here as we speak
naneb - i only had my 8th graders one time becaus of the hurricane, we discussed character traits
cavey - Hi Everyone!
Sadie T - Hello Cavey!!
naneb - Sadie, Marcia and I have been reorganizing the files into folders
Sadie T - Brad, are things going better with your class?
naneb - Hi cavey
brad - Many have stabilized, but many still with issues
brad - Many still hung up on, "When are we going to color?"
cavey - What kinds of issues, Brad?
brad - Behavioral, immaturity.
brad - So many who need craaave attention, that they never shut up.
Sadie T - I have problems with students who need attention, too
Sadie T - It's sad, I know they get little attention elsewhere
brad - I swear one of them gives a running commentary just to hear herself speak, "look there goes the teacher, he's standing at the overhead with his marker, now he's writing, and WHOA that's the lesson, ladies and gentlemen. . ."
Sadie T - LOL Brad, at least he's paying attention!
brad - A LOT of pencil issues, I swear I'm just going to buy a gross.
Sadie T - Sorry... SHE'S paying attention
brad - Well, she's rarely giving commentary on ME, Sadie. LOL
cavey - So brad, still a bit stressed are we?
Sadie T - I did that with pencils, Brad. My first year I was very possessive of my pencils and they all disappeared. I gave up and bought a million of them... and they do much better with actually returning mine to me or bringing their own.
brad - It started out okay this week, got a little hairy on Thursday, mellowed this morning, and then crazed (as natural on Friday) this afternoon. For them, it was the best week ever.
Sadie T - I think it was a power thing - if I was going to refuse to give them pencils, they were going to refuse to give them back anytime they got one.
brad - I had a box of twenty, Sadie, and they're gone already.
cavey - Me too Brad, my kingdom for a pencil!
brad - I just say, "I don't have pencils. They're not my responsibility." I'm telling the truth, I truly don't have anymore now.
Sharon - hideeho!
naneb - Marcia
Sadie T - Hi Marcia and Sharon!!
naneb - Sharon
cavey - Hey girls!
brad - But, honestly, a lot of "He/She took my pencil."
Sharon - how is everyone?
brad - Marcia and Sharon, tell the truth. You planned coming in together like that.
naneb - I have a friend who will make students give her something in exchange for a pencil, like a shoe
Marcia/1st/GA - Brad, your class sounds like my class's cousin!
Sharon - perfect timing!
cavey - love it nan!
Sadie T - I got some regular pencils and then some of those little golf pencils, which they hate... when the regular ones run out, they get golf pencils. So they return the regular ones to me, to keep me from running out. It has worked pretty well.
Marcia/1st/GA - yes, we were fighting over who would hold the door.
brad - My kids would say okay, Nan. They try to take shoes off anyway. That does work in higher grades, though. Some of MY teachers did it.
Sadie T - Hello Kim!
naneb - Kim
cavey - Kim!!!
brad - LOL, Sadie, where'd you pick up the golf pencils?
Sharon - hi kim
Kim/1/Ca - Hola Chicas y chico........(((smooches)))
brad - Kim, Can I drink water?
naneb - These are middle school, I would ask for their planner, they cannot go out of the room without their planner
Sadie T - We have a rule about wearing shoes, so... probably couldn't do that. The STUDENTS would say I was breaking the rules, I just know it.
Kim/1/Ca - Shyah........brad........from the golf course.........! (duh)
Marcia/1st/GA - I would hate for mine to take their shoes off. It would take all day to get them back on! What a great distractor.
brad - LOL, Marcia
Kim/1/Ca - You certainly CAN, Bradley.................
Sadie T - They sell them at Staples and at Office Max, Brad. Cost the same as regular pencils though... but don't disappear so fast.
Kim/1/Ca - Today I made them clean out their desks to FIND all the pencils they BORROWED from me this week.........
Sadie T - Nan, great idea about the planner! Never thought of doing that.
Sharon - heh... shoes isn't an issue with me... i have about three that kick 'em off everyday during SSR
brad - I know. I have these set of scissors; they don't cut well. The kids who don't have scissors HATE using them. And I just say, "You know you could get your own scissors."
Kim/1/Ca - Hey Brad.........can I ax you sompthin
brad - ME too Sharon.
naneb - I don't make an issue out of pencils anymore, not worth the fuss
brad - Go ahead Kim. And how do you know they're yours?
cavey - Kim that's sompin
Kim/1/Ca - Me neither, naneb.......! I just keep the basket filled and mark it off as a cost of doing business...............of course, I hunt them down every once in awhile............
Sadie T - Nan, with my students, when I stopped making a fuss about pencils, so did they. I think it was a power struggle thing.
Kim/1/Ca - I actually heard "mines" today..........
Sharon - i have my kids bring in 2 large packs of pencils at the beginning of the year... they then become community property and i divvy them out in cups on their tables as needed
brad - Pencils aren't worth the fuss, I agree, Nan. It's they who's'a fussin'
naneb - I think so too, Sadie
brad - LOL, Kim, It's a daily thing in my room.
naneb - I have some in a cup on my desk all sharpened, I am the only one who can sharpen pencils, I use an electric, if their pencil breaks they get one of mine until theirs is sharpened
cavey - I love that one Kim!
Kim/1/Ca - I don't know they are mines.......if they fuss enough I just let them keep it........I can pretty much guess Scooby Doo ain't mines...........
Kim/1/Ca - same here naneb...........i think you shared that idea awhile back and I took it to heart...........
cavey - Do yours say waste for spill or is that a southern thing?
brad - That's the issue, Nan! Mine never put it in the "to be sharpened" cup, and then complain they don't have a pencil and I won't sharpen it during the day.
naneb - My kids can sharpen pencils during the first 5 minutes of class and that is all
brad - Use that in example, please, cavey
Sadie T - For "my own" pencils (the ones I use for marking attendance) I use those big extra thick kiddie pencils that don't fit into the pencil sharpener... so the kids never take them.
Kim/1/Ca - context, cavey.........
cavey - Dont waste you milk all over the floor.
diane - hi guys
Sharon - cavey... southerner here... don't believe i've heard that one
Sadie T - Hi Diane!!
Sharon - hi diane
brad - Never heard that cavey
Marcia/1st/GA - I have never heard waste used like that either.
Marcia/1st/GA - where are you cavey?
diane - how is everybody?
cavey - Hi Marcia - Virginia
Sadie T - Nope, never heard that out here in California cavey
naneb - Sharon, did you make the nonfiction convention notebook?
Sharon - the one i hate is when they use intonation to "ask" a question: I can go to the bathroom?
diane - was this a better week, brad?
Kim/1/Ca - Well........somebody might have said that the child was "wasting" milk when she spilled it...........she over generalized the term?
Kim/1/Ca - (((diane))))
brad - over last week, I would say we had a fifty percent improvement
Marcia/1st/GA - What part, Cavey?
Sadie T - Sharon, sometimes mine say "I'm going to the bathroom?" to ask.
Sharon - no nan... not there yet... still on t-t
brad - trying new behavioral approach next week.
cavey - Well hi lower case diane, I missed you coming in
Sharon - that's a big improvement, brad
naneb - I mean did you make the ones in the files on Yahoo?
diane - lol, cavey
Sharon - lol sadie... i haven't heard that one either
Kim/1/Ca - Well.......I get to teach the strategies next week to my credential students...........this same group who ARGUED with me and claimed they could take a mind journey with Dick and Jane...................
Marcia/1st/GA - what is the behavioral approach , Brad. I sure need it.
Sharon - i think that was marcia
cavey - Between Richmond and Washinton on the Potomac Marcia
diane - good news, i think, brad...this year does seem slower in many ways so far...
Sadie T - What new behavioral approach Brad? Or are you still working that out?
Kim/1/Ca - cavey, she snuck in and brad was blocking your view.
Sharon - i just did the graphics with labels
naneb - Marcia, was it you?
Marcia/1st/GA - Oh, no, Nan, I made the nonfiction notebook. Is there something wrong?
brad - OH, my Kim no, I took a few mind journeys with Puff though mind you.
brad - (Grreat, that'll get archived)
Kim/1/Ca - You mean Puff the Magic Dragon lyrics, right, Brad? Right?
cavey - Brad, you are so bad
naneb - No, I have been trying to give Judy credit for them and she has been laughing at me, We couldn't remember who made it. She said it was Sharon, I thought it was her!!
Sharon - hey... dick, jane, spot and sally are worth $500 a piece now... i know cuz i USED to collect em
cavey - I know what you mean
Sadie T - LOL Brad, lots of good stuff in the archives....
brad - Well, it's not really NEW. It's the same as I've been doing since school started. I just document each disruption to routine (not following directions, yelling across room, running around room)
naneb - brad, we have a discipline notebook and nobody wants to go in the book
brad - Well, I just decided to count how many times certain people had been written in my "book." on Thursday. I did the same on Friday, just to see, if we went up or down and who went up or down.
Sharon - i keep tellin' you guys... get a bird... my class is so totally wonderful around our baby
brad - I was thinking of just taping their "personal best" (even if it's I've been in the book 15 times today) and then seeing if they can "beat it" each day. Just to see.
Marcia/1st/GA - and are you getting baseline data on the behaviors?
naneb - ROFLMAO!!!!!
brad - taping it on their desk that is
diane - this is a little embarassing, sharon, but i have a very irrational fear of birds kept in cages
brad - I don't think that's strange at all diane
Marcia/1st/GA - Diane,I have an irrational fear of birds flying over my head!
diane - i think the fact that they don't have arms is creepy
cavey - no irrational fears here, only perfectly rational ones
naneb - they do have arms, they just have feathers on them
brad - anyway, I was going to try it, because punitive doesn't fit me (or accomplish what I want) and this seems to be a way of searching to make it better and improve individually
brad - I figure I could sit down with worst offenders and make a plan.
diane - true, nan, but not arms in the humanesque sense...i swear i'm not an "armist" though
brad - And it comes in real handy, especially the other day, when the parent didn't believe me. I said, "Okay let me just give you a day in the life of "Susie". . ."
naneb - brad, you can record and let the kids graph each day, they might really get inspired to make the line go down, I owuld do it everyday at first
Kim-1/Ca - (((Alta Rose)))) BRAD did you bring some cashews or pretzels or something..........?
Mrs. J - Ooh, butterscotch, yum!
brad - My class also seems to think that we won't have a class fall party if there are a lot of disruptions in the notebook. I don't know where they got that idea, but I'm not dispelling the notion. Which proves sometimes kids make their own best punishments
brad - KIM?
Kim-1/Ca - (Homer drool) .......butterscotch
diane - brad, i have done something similar with a few kids...they do get motivated to see the chart drop
Kim-1/Ca - WHAT brad?
brad - does it stick, diane?
Alta Rose - Sharon, the kids drew their connections to your bicycle poem today. Turned out great!
Sadie T - Hey, I had NO ABSENSES all week in two of my classes. I don't think that's ever happened before. Trying to think of something to reward them with next week.
brad - Cashews, pretzels?
Kim-1/Ca - It was YOUR turn to bring the munchies, right ladies?
Mrs. J - I'm going to try that, Brad. My class is driving me out of my mind
brad - YOu're inner city, right Mrs. J?
brad - Munch on this, Kim. (That's for archives, LOL)
Kim-1/Ca - woo hoo Sadie!
Sadie T - Yes, I brought the munchies. I have the munchies. Anyone have any food?
cavey - Absolutely Kim, I distinctly remember the motion to appoint brad the snack committee chair
Sharon - yay, alta rose!
Marcia/1st/GA - How did you do it, Alta Rose?
Mrs. J - Sadie, my principal promised a pizza party to every class that earned at least 95% attendance each month (our district goal). We all got it in September. We had 98.6%!
Kim-1/Ca - <<<<smacking brad
naneb - another thing I have done is make a chart with 15 min. blocks. I tape it to the desk and do a check every 15 minutes, if they are on task with correct behavior they get a star, I send the card home everyday for the parents to reward them
brad - wow, sadie, no offense, but popsicles for reward? I"m always surprised how older's still seem to enjoy popsicles
Mrs. J - Yes, Brad. In fact, every time I hear you talk about your class it's like you're talking about mine
brad - Not kidding, I fill pages and pages with this class.
diane - well brad, i have had it stick with most, but i have had one or two that didn't see much actual change...kids with homelives so troubling, however, that they just seemed to be stuck
Kim-1/Ca - How about some homemade cookies, Sadie? Very personal, very tasty.............
brad - That's true, Diane, if there's no back-up from home. . . you can only do so much, but at least while they're at school?. . .
Sadie T - Yup, good ideas - cookies or popsicles.
Kim-1/Ca - I actually YELLED at my kids today. I NEVER EVER yell. I can truly say I didn't SCREAM, but.................I did have to yell. My principal said...."so...you're human?"
brad - Today was a light day, 6 pages
judy3ca - Hello!
brad - ((judy's back))
Mrs. J - LOL, Kim. I feel like the Grinch this year
Mrs. J - Hello, Judy.
Sadie T - Kim, I'm shocked! You're human!
Marcia/1st/GA - My class is also very challenging this year. Lots of impulsive behaviors, two definite behavior problems, and two VERY low kids. Those are just the high profilers.
Kim-1/Ca - (((Judy))))
cavey - Judy- back from the bookmobile?
brad - (Kim <I know what you're thinking)
Sadie T - Hello Judy!!
Sharon - judy!:)
naneb - Brad, i would start small and work for minutes of everyone on task and then go from there
Marcia/1st/GA - Hi judy
brad - More detail, Nan?
naneb - Judy, as you see I saved your blue
Kim-1/Ca - Yes.......it's true. I HATE it when I yell. I feel so......................yelly.
judy3ca - LOL, I meant to leave for one minute, then had a phone call. How nice to see everyone!
brad - as opposed to yam?
Kim-1/Ca - <<<<smacking brad louder and harder
diane - i agree with you about about making school the best it can be despite home, but one boy in particular was being told he was a piece of trash (nicer than the word his mom's boyfriend uses), so he behaves accordingly to live up to expectations
judy3ca - Thanks, Nan!
naneb - Maybe give a star to the class for every 15 minutes of good behavior, then reward everyone when they reach a goal for the day
Alta Rose - Marica--We read it again today, stopped after each stanza and discussed connections. I had things like it reminded Tasana of when she had to get her needle, etc. Then, I had them circle one stanza they connected with, and told them they were going to draw their connection. Before they did, they had to tell me what they were going to draw, so I knew they were on the right track. Many stuck to the bicycle experience, but a few were able to extend it. (I felt proud when I mastered such in such in karate, etc.)
Mrs. J - I still have the never ever shut up class. The thing is, when they get to really talking, I look to see who it is thinking I could separate people and they are just talking to themselves, making stupid noises, just wanting to hear themselves
brad - <---- recoiling
Sharon - judy... i loved reading about your MOT successes
diane - hi judy...i was happy for you that you get to see both keene and spandel...jealous though
Kim-1/Ca - <<<chasing brad with a rolled up newspaper.........
Sadie T - Has anyone tried recording GOOD behavior in a book for a while? I know you couldn't do that all the time because the goal would be for them to be good all the time, but... has anyone tried it as a short-term thing?
judy3ca - Sharon, thanks a lot--it was a very good week (before lunch).
Kim-1/Ca - YES........what is with the stupid noises? I am trying to "get" that..............?
cavey - And you two wonder why you have problems with your students, Kimmy and Bradley, behave!
brad - Diane I have one like that this year, I think. Mom's in jail. He hasn't been in school in a whole week and a half. i've already suspended him (threatening children). Honestly hope he doesn't come back.
Marcia/1st/GA - Thanks, Alta. That's basically what I did too. I remember one little girl connecting to learning to read in kindergarten b/c she hasnt' leanred to ride a bike.
judy3ca - Diane--I am bowing to my Lit Coach and Principal for this one--I fear I'll owe them forever, LOL.
cavey - or is it Bradford?
Sadie T - You want to know how "mature" high school students can be, today they had a stuffed monkey that made noises when you squeezed it... they were passing it around the room... and when I took it away, the kids started making the monkey noise themselves
Kim-1/Ca - .....it's BRADLEY...and he's making stupid noises now
brad - I've done "caught being good" with classes before. I really don't know if I want to get back in with that. They expect to be rewarded.
Songster - Hi what is the meeting about/1st time here
Kim-1/Ca - I am into legitimate, quiet praise and for the MOST part, it really works. But today, Luis was on my LAST nerve..............
Alta Rose - brb
judy3ca - Sharon, we waved good-bye to our first butterfly today. Another one emerged this morning.
cavey - Sadie- that was a monkey to self connection
diane - yeah, brad, i had a similar feeling last year...i LOVE that little boy because he's such a great kid deep down, but he was so problematic...threatening kids, etc. he had a history of vanishing during winter vacation...i was shocked, horrified, and heartbroken to realize that i had kind of hoped that would happen last year. never thought i'd see the day. still really love him, but am thankful he's moved to next grade
brad - I am into Loud Fake Praise,
naneb - we don't usually have a topic, Songster
Sharon - are you enjoying it, judy?
Mrs. J - Must be something about the name, Kim. I have never seen a Luis in my building that did not drive his teacher crazy
brad - THAT WAS DURN GOOD, JULIANA
diane - BRAD, YOU ARE SO FUNNY (that's loud fake praise...)
Sadie T - Cavey... monkey to self? LOL
brad - I've never met a Zachary who wasn't a complete jerk
judy3ca - Ooooh, oooh, Kim, speaking of last nerve, I actually told little miss know-it-all in my class that other teachers look to me for advice and that I didn't need hers at the moment. Very very bad of me, but I'd just had it.
cavey - lol diane again
Sadie T - Songster, are you a teacher?
judy3ca - Sharon, the butterflies are fabulous!
Alta Rose - Lol, Judy!
cavey - Hi Songster!
Mrs. J - Ooh, Judy's human too, Kim!
diane - ahhh...total aside, i dated a boy named zach during the late 80's...everyone sang that stupid john cougar mellancamp song (jack and diane) to us....still hate that song
cavey - Judy, you're as bad as brad
Kim-1/Ca - I LOVE it, Judy! I said a similar thing to Luis a couple of days ago..................."I like you very much, Luis, and I am glad you are in my class. I NOTICE you when you make good choices. SO, acting like a FOOL in my classroom is NOT necessary."
Alta Rose - Lol, Diane!
Songster - Yes, I teach K-9 music
brad - THat's a better way of putting it, Kim. Thanx
brad - is that dogs singing?
judy3ca - Kim, ROFL, same school of sarcasm. Let's hear Brad.....
Kim-1/Ca - I wish wish wish I were musical.......................... sadly, I am the reason God invented CDs.
naneb - Today, I was on Jerron's case all afternoon because he was not getting anything accomplished, he turned to me and said, You better watch out or you won't get a hug!
Sharon - we usually have a little release party, judy... a brownie with a butterfly stenciled on in white powdered sugar and a cup of koolaid that they drink with a probiscus of course (straw) I place a flower cutout on top of the cup and stick the probiscus through a hole punched in it
Sadie T - Canine music?
cavey - Songster- he doesn't really mean to be rude, do you brad?
judy3ca - Nan, that is darling!
brad - That sounds cute, sharon.
Kim-1/Ca - LOL Naneb!
Marcia/1st/GA - Canine--K-9 music
naneb - Oh Yes, he does!!
Sadie T - Songster, that's quite a range of grade levels! How do you like it?
brad - whaddaya wanna hear, judy?
Kim-1/Ca - It's those barking jingle bell dogs, Brad................
diane - sharon, i want to come!! too cute
naneb - He is cute, but that is how he gets out of doing anything
judy3ca - Oh, Sharon, I LOVE that idea! We just stood in the hall and waved.
Kim-1/Ca - Aw.......Sharon...............how cute!
Songster - Marcia LOL/I haven't thought of that yet
judy3ca - And we waved noisily, Kim.
Sharon - lol, judy!
Kim-1/Ca - OOOh! I found a Rylant title in our school library! One I hadn't read yet..............
Songster - I love teaching music/ Trained as a band teacher/k-6 is a bit of a struggle
Sadie T - Kim, which book?
diane - do tell, kim...
brad - Not only do I not do dioramas, I don't do baked goods either. I'm a bad primary teacher.
Marcia/1st/GA - Well, it was Brad's joke. I am just interpreting apparently.
Alta Rose - Hey, the rest of my staff now has a copy of RWM!
naneb - I finally ordered my Polacco books yesterday, I can hardly wait
Kim-1/Ca - Miss Maggie...............I now MUST go buy it.
judy3ca - Marcia, how are you feeling?
Mrs. J - Brad, do you give your kids a snack in the morning?
Marcia/1st/GA - nan, where did you order them?
Sadie T - Songster, if you're K-9, does that mean you go to different schools?
cavey - Yes, but Brad, do you own a demin jumper?
naneb - book closeouts
Alta Rose - It was purchased for them with school funds. (I bought my own.) I can hear the synics now!
judy3ca - Kim, I've never heard of that one--what's it about?
brad - no snack
Mrs. J - My district is doing a book study with RWM
Kim-1/Ca - We agree, Brad. You are our token "bad teacher."
diane - you're not alone, brad, although i do make metamorphic waffles
Songster - No/ I am at one school
naneb - I don't think they have many left though
Marcia/1st/GA - judy, I am feeling great, but with this class I really look forward to my weekends. Got a lot of work to do this weekend. Conferences are coming up.
Sharon - no... but he's thought about givin' em a SMACK or two
Songster - RWM?????
Alta Rose - Hi Glenda!
brad - no denim jumper, no apron and nothing hanging from my ceiling
cavey - That would be denim jumper for the non dyslexic
Sadie T - Glenda??
Alta Rose - Songster--Reading With Meaning by Debbie Miller.
Kim-1/Ca - I'm jealous, Mrs. J! The story is about an old woman (of course) and a young boy and a bird and a snake. Very cute.
Glenda1st TN - Hi guys, I'm trying find a color that no one has. Give me a minute
Mrs. J - The teacher who teaches the other half of my day insists on a half hour break with food every day. It's driving me crazy
Kim-1/Ca - YOU DON'T have a DENIM JUMPER? (horrors!)
Marcia/1st/GA - what was the name of the Rylant book?
naneb - I bought, Tree of the Dancing goat, Some birthday and Welcome Comfort
Sadie T - Hi Glenda! You look good in that color.
diane - oh...we have sedimentary pb and j too
cavey - Oh Kim- I just got Tulip and Solomon, love them too. Miss Maggie and her bird are great too!
Alta Rose - I think you're OK, Glenda.
Glenda1st TN - Great
Kim-1/Ca - Miss Maggie...........very good!
brad - apparently i have to go shopping tomorrow for a denim jumper
judy3ca - Brad, ROFL
naneb - I don't have a denim jumper either or anything hanging from the ceiling
Marcia/1st/GA - I love Solomon. I am thinking of using it for t-t connections with setting.
judy3ca - Nan, neither do I
cavey - Yes Brad with little apples embroidered on it
Sharon - not even a student, nan?
Kim-1/Ca - UH...........yeah! (sheesh)
diane - brad...make sure your jumper has cute motifs appliqued onto them...
Mrs. J - I've got a denim jumper but nothing hanging from the ceiling. The ceiling police will cart me off in handcuffs
brad - last year I couldn't have things from the ceiling (security system). But I wouldn't anyway. Being tall is not good in primary classroom
Glenda1st TN - Nan, Everyone has a denim jumper.
Kim-1/Ca - I have Scarecrow but haven't read it yet (I know, I blasphemed!)
naneb - not at the moment!! sharon
brad - Yes, apples, pencils, and a chalkboard with ABC on it
Kim-1/Ca - Yeah, the CEILING police HATE hanging stuff............
Songster - Wonder if reading music/ comes under this topic RWM
naneb - I don't wear dresses very much
brad - I wear my skirt every Friday, though, Nan
Kim-1/Ca - How will they do the book study, Mrs. J?
Alta Rose - Me neither, Nan.
diane - kim, i read mr griggs' work on wednesday...they had a text to teacher connection
naneb - I need a picture Brad!!
cavey - ooh brad and while you're at it, get some vests for the holidays
judy3ca - I never wear dresses--I sit on the floor everyday.
Songster - I'm having a problem with kids reading music/ i don't know how to make it stick?
Kim-1/Ca - oh diane, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mr. Griggs..........truly one of her best.
brad - IT says "Teachers have clASS" embroidered on the backside
Sadie T - I don't have a denim jumper or an apron...
judy3ca - Diane, I LOVE that book!
diane - they were convinced i must spend most waking moments loving and thinking about my job
judy3ca - LOLOLOL
Kim-1/Ca - that speaks volumes for YOU diane.................
cavey - Okay Sadie that settles it, you'll never be elementary
judy3ca - Diane, last year I said something about "going to work" and one of my kids said, "You have a job?"
Sharon - can't help ya there, songster... little kids stare at me in church when i try to sing... i have to lip sync
Kim-1/Ca - My kinders wanted to see the bathtub when we visited the post office...........
Alta Rose - I'm not sure, Songster. I'm thinking...
Mrs. J - I'm not sure yet, Kim. I was at a meeting of third grade teachers where we were scoring writing and discussing how to get kids questioning, visualizing, etc. and I put in a plug for RWM, MOT and STW, of course and our reading specialist said she was planning a study on RWM. The way the district has done this in the past is ask who's interested, buy the books, then meet and discuss.
diane - they claimed it helped them to understand the book because they know me, so they must "know" mr griggs....it was pretty cute...almost made me want to give them extra recess ( :
brad - ok, songster, you need help with kids reading music?? Can you be a little more specific?
Kim-1/Ca - Hmmmmm........... something big and visual, songster.............
Songster - Have any of you teachers that teach reading/do you have any suggestion of how I can help students with tthis ? I haven't been able to make any connection: I have to re-teach every year and still on about 60% get it
cavey - oh diane, as long as they're not connecting you to the really old women in the stories you're doing great!
Alta Rose - What grades, songster? All of them?
Kim-1/Ca - I put song LYRICS on charts or make big books.........I dont' pay much attention to the tune since I can't carry one. My kids have actually ASKED me (nicely) to not sing so loud. So they can hear the CD
diane - lol, cavey...i have a few years to go...i hope
Alta Rose - They know FACE and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, right?
Songster - I teach line first: Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge/ Then take them to what I call the fingers/ We all have five and this becomes the staff
Mrs. J - Songster, do you think that some brains just don't get it? I always had a hard time reading music, even though I was in choir
brad - You know the acrostics that go with lines and spaces on the staff, right? Every Good boy. . .
Glenda1st TN - Songster, I'm not sure what your having to reteach in your music every year. I came in late.
Kim-1/Ca - Well, they need something to connect it to, songster, something that makes it relevant and meaningful for them................if they are not interested in a musical instrument or learning to play one............they probably won't remember very well.
brad - Flash Cards?
Sharon - when did it switch to deserving fudge? i thought it was every good boy does fine
judy3ca - Speaking of ancient (me), that used to be Every Good Boy Does Fine in my day.
cavey - Me too Judy!
Sharon - lol Judy!
Kim-1/Ca - i've heard it both ways for years........
Mrs. J - I think it depends on who taught you Sharon. I've heard does fine, but I learned fudge. Kinda like the one for planets
cavey - I still can't read music though
brad - Big Visual posters
Sharon - it just brings back memories of a really mean old lady piano teacher with a ruler whacking my wrists when they drooped
Kim-1/Ca - If a kid is not interested in learning to read music and it has no connection....................perhaps your focus should be on the songs themselves?
Alta Rose - Do you have manipulatives for the little ones, Songster? My son's guitar teacher has a staff on a little white board and round magnets to put on lines and spaces.
Songster - I teach line first: Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge/ Then take them to what I call the fingers/ We all have five fingersand this becomes the stafft
judy3ca - Sharon, we are soooo cooool.
Alta Rose - brb
naneb - Sharon? did you go to her too??
Songster - Sorry my computer is acting up
Kim-1/Ca - My son did not know the guitar at ALL and I bought him one for Christmas. He plays several songs now........using "tabs" he gets from the computer.........
Mrs. J - Songster, what grade did you say you start this at?
cavey - It's okay Songster, everyone acts up here!
naneb - my son writes and plays almost any instrument but he cannot read music
Songster - Part of the cirriculum/since i am the band teacher it really helps for when they get into grade 7
judy3ca - cavey, LOLOL
Kim-1/Ca - But he is INTERESTED and practices all the time................I think that is the key.
Sharon - kim... my son picked up the guitar and just started playing... plays by ear, and plays drums, piano by ear too
brad - I also think if students have no interest in singing or playing an instrument, they're not going to bother. Having music once or twice a week for 45 minutes will not make it "stick" unless they are motivated.
Glenda1st TN - Songster, I can't play a musical instrument, but I can read enough music to sing a song at church. This is important because we do not use musical insturments. Perhaps if you focused on that aspect for the students that just can't seem to do it the "real" way.
cavey - Judy, my kids are getting tired of the same piece of writing. They don
brad - The only reason I think it stuck with me is because I took piano for five years and sang in choir in high school. I don't think I really "knew" it until then.
Kim-1/Ca - My "music" time always has big visuals of the lyrics........or movements, rhythm sticks, finger plays................. i love music. I just can't sing or play anything.
judy3ca - My husband can play almost any instrument (by ear), daughter is in college marching band, son plays guitars, and I appreciate music.
Kim-1/Ca - Oh Sharon.........I bought the "favorite things" book...........kids LOVE it.
judy3ca - cavey, what?
brad - I appreciate a good Ho Ho
cavey - Anyway, Judy, they don't want to fix it any further. Should I just let them go on to another topic?
Sharon - i love that book too, kim
Songster - They love to come to music/ motivation isn't the problem only reading music/If students take piano it seems to take
Kim-1/Ca - in more ways than one, brad.
brad - That's why I said it twice?
Mrs. J - Brad, my four blocks guru. Quick question here. I was dialoguing with a teacher today and was trying to give her a quick lowdown on the difference between guided reading fountas and pinnell and 4B. I couldn't remember. Can you give me a quick lowdown again?
Kim-1/Ca - I'd say you need something BIG and COLORFUL and VISUAL on the walls........................
judy3ca - cavey, oh that is a huge question. If you are satisfied that you have done all the teaching you can in conference with the student, they I'd let them move on. Does that make sense?
Kim-1/Ca - thrice...........answer Mrs. J.............oh guru one.
brad - There are people like Nan's son, who can't read it but can play it. I agree with Kim, concentrate on songs mostly. Kind've a whole language/phonics debate we've entered here.
cavey - I guess so, I just think they could do so much more, but they lose interest.
cavey - Am I expecting too much too soon?
Kim-1/Ca - Yeah, cavey..........we read Lucy Calkins and Katie Wood Ray and envision our kids carting little notebooks around........................sigh.
brad - The primary difference seems to be there is no small grouping according to levels in 4B.
Sadie T - Hey guys, I've got to go. Might be back later if you guys are still here. See ya!
judy3ca - cavey, don't let them back off if you really think there's more they need to learn from the piece, but if they really feel they've gone as far as they can.....well, don't we all feel like that sometimes?
Kim-1/Ca - sharon are you doing small reading groups yet?
brad - As I hear tell more and more, (and read more F and P and more 4B) we really do the same stuff and call it by different names.
Mrs. J - So the small grouping is heterogeneous? What would be a teaching point?
Sharon - i'm struggling, kim... my early visions are hittin' obstacles!
Songster - Thanks all/ have to go now
judy3ca - cavey, another thing though, my kids want to publish everything because they like their work up on the wall. Do you have a way to inspire them to go on?
brad - LOL Sharon. ahh, the dreams do get dashed quickly, don't they?
Kim-1/Ca - I'm doing lots of word study and shared reading and some writing...........but small groups bite.
Alta Rose - Goodnight, Songster.
cavey - Judy, I've had some switch techniques three times because they won't stay focused on one thing
diane . - man...my computer keeps booting me off...then the board says i'm already here...there are two of me
brad - teaching point--any comprehension strategy
Alta Rose - Hey, can I share a candle?
brad - comprehension is generalizable across texts, genres, and levels
diane . - please do, alta
Kim-1/Ca - So the fact that I have a bald spot because I attempted small reading groups..........is normal?
judy3ca - cavey, but are they writing? I mean, if the idea is for them to practice writing....well, then, that's what they're doing, right?
brad - Kim, did you ever get back with me on your decoding strategies
Glenda1st TN - Alta, I would love to hear a candle.
Mrs. J - So in first grade for instance, when a child is just learning how to read, that kind of strategy stuff would be whole group and guided reading would be strictly comprehension?
Alta Rose - This is my second year with the same kids. Last year was the first 4Block year...
Kim-1/Ca - Puh leeze.............share your candle.
cavey - yes, I guess you're right!
Sharon - i had visions of kids in SSR and me with a small group... what i conveniently forgot is how that SSR looks this early in first grade... it's the "being pecked to death by chickens" syndrome.... peck , peck... what's this word, what's this word
Alta Rose - So you know that one big part with 4Block teaching is teaching transfer of word families in reading and spelling....
brad - LOL, Sharon, I realized this week. (The first week I was semi-conferencing) that I was still being pecked too much and had too much Off task
judy3ca - ROFL Sharon!
cavey - thanks Judy, I feel better. I won't try to make every piece a "masterpiece"
Alta Rose - This year, Taylor is in an Early Literacy class for some extra reading instruction....
Kim-1/Ca - brad.....MY decoding strategies? I like Cunninghams................does it sound or look like another word I know? Does that make sense? Chunk it............ skip it and come back..........what word might go there? etc.
judy3ca - cavey, I think that's good thinking.
Kim-1/Ca - YES.......go on
Alta Rose - His E.L. teacher gave him a sight word to learn--"could"
brad - What about letters and sounds, Kim?
Alta Rose - He learned it, and the next day she gave him --"would"
Sharon - kim... using chunks like that is actually the consolidated alphabetic phase of recognizing words... high level... that's why i work for it, too
Kim-1/Ca - short little sounds to go with each letter.........no "uh" at the end......... I sing a stupid little song which is just as bad as Open Court's little jingles........... but they remember. I also pair it with ASL...........for Kinder.
diane . - cavey, i was booted when you started this conversation, but i am mostly working on generative writing right now...will choose from those starts to create published works
brad - By the way, Kim, my wife laughed her A off when the "Literacy King" package came
Alta Rose - He learned "would" right away. When his E.L. teacher commented on that, he explained, 'Well, Mrs. W. told us that...and proceeded to explain about the Word Family transfer! I was so proud of him...
judy3ca - I had something special happen today, too, small but special. If I can reach, I just gently put my hand on a child's back to remind her to get it together. Today my ADHD kid started yakking (not intentionally) while I was reading aloud and I saw another child reach over and put her hand on his back. And he stopped. I had to blink hard on that one.
brad - I've never had to work on "sounds associated with letters" before and I'm ASTONISHED at how little they know (or how little is taught in first)
Kim-1/Ca - That probably made her feel better.........laughing it off like that.......being pregnant and all...............LOL
diane . - hi, oneroom
Alta Rose - I thought all that harping last year paid off! Lol!
Glenda1st TN - Wow, Alta, that is a great candle. You should be very proud.
brad - interesting judy
cavey - How cute Judy
Kim-1/Ca - COOL, Alta Rose! Way to go.
naneb - Have any of you ever heard of Phonographix?
Sharon - brad... be sure to concentrate on the "feel" of the mouth for those sounds
Kim-1/Ca - I have HEARD of it..................
brad - I'm getting lots of "uh"'s on the sounds, Kim. Working hard to stop it. Talking about tongue behind teeth and pressing air and all kinds of crap. I've really had to just setlle that I'm taking this class "back to basics"
naneb - It is a really good way of teaching sounds and symbols and what they call the advanced code
Alta Rose - What surprised me last year, brad, was how poor their rhyming skills were, coming out of K.Lots of focus on letters and sounds, but I wish they did more rhyming.
Kim-1/Ca - Yes.........I like McCracken's admonition: "What sounds is your MOUTH saying?"
Mrs. J - Some kids just don't get the rhyming Alta
Sharon - do you do the crying baby short a, hard of hearing short e, punch in the stomach short u, and doctor short o?
brad - Nan, that's mentioned in that book I bought, What's Wrong with Teaching Reading or whatever it was called. There were two chapters on Basic and Advanced Code that made a lot of sense to me, and I can't believe I was never taught this at university.
Kim-1/Ca - Yup, Sharon............kinda like that.
Sharon - and sticky icky fingers short i
cavey - hey diane, didn't mean to ignore you. How's your writing going?
brad - Those are good Sharon, I have to write them
Mrs. J - We do itchy i
naneb - brad, buy the book Reading Reflex, It is less than $20 and it will teach you a lot about teaching sounds, blending, segmenting ewtc
Sharon - brad... there are the four h brothers too... do you know those?
Kim-1/Ca - That's phonemic awareness, Alta. And without it...........what a struggle. The ones who don't have that mid and high level P.A.............are struggling right now with dictation. They simply don't "hear" those medial vowels.
Glenda1st TN - Brad, I've found if I explain to my first graders that they can't sound out words if they tack the "uh" on to the letters it really seems to help some.
Mrs. J - I love the h brothers story
brad - yes, I heard of those sharon
Glenda1st TN - Kim, what kind of dictation do you do?
judy3ca - Goodnight friends, must let the husband on the computer now.
diane . - well, cavey, it's been slow going, but i am starting to see some real progress...their first grade year, writing consisted of them copying sentences off of the board. 2nd grade is fabulous, but that teacher had so much to undo. we're making progress, though
Mrs. J - My kids love when I stick my tongue out with th
Alta Rose - Take Care, Judy.
Kim-1/Ca - yeah, it's not VUH iolin.......or CUH at
naneb - When we teach those sounds we have to be really careful in our pronunciation, otherwise we just continue the uhs at the end of sounds
brad - Okay, and I truly think my sound-sound picture (that's the term I'm using instead of letters) is working. It's the blending that they have trouble with I think.
cavey - night Judy!
Kim-1/Ca - spelling dictation, glenda.......grace's program
Sharon - can they blend auditorally?
eRIN - Hi all, great look at my name, my husband left the caps lock on LOL
brad - I adjusted making words by putting digraphs on the same tile (wh, th, sh, ck) I think that's really going to help.
Kim-1/Ca - I use a boingy rubber band also............ the BIG ones you can get? To s t r e t c h out the sounds and "boing" where they hear them
naneb - brad, that is how reading reflex teaches it is sounds and sound pictures, letters are pictures of sounds, we can put them together - blend and take them apart - segment
Sharon - me too, kim!
brad - explain kim
naneb - I give nonsense words for them to make like brip blend the sounds and find the pictures
eRIN - Mrs. J, how are things going in your classroom?
brad - "What's this sound picture?" (holding up "p") "Puh" "No there's no such sound as puh, it's PPPP"
Kim-1/Ca - You mean like Yopp Singer, Sharon.......? No..........no surprise. They can do it if I segment it.........but that is too time consuming.
brad - I need to do some individual testing I think (if only i had an aide while I did it; what does that lit coach do all day anyway)
Mrs. J - Marginally better, Erin. Thanks for asking.
Sharon - nonsense words are best for assessing blending ability because the other factors are eliminated
brad - Some removing phonemes and adding and segmenting/blending kind of testing
Mrs. J - Probably plays all day like I do Brad
Alta Rose - Do you all have lit coaches in the U.S.?
brad - Yes, but for those who can't transition from blending to the word, what can I do?
Kim-1/Ca - Brad.......you take the word and say it really slowly, moving your mouth/head along the length of the rubber band. " F r i d a y " then ask, "boing where you hear the /i/ sound.........."
cavey - Alta, we have Title I reading specialists
brad - Boing?
eRIN - I am struggling with the lack of listening. Kids playing with the velcro on their pants during read aloud. Thinking its all right to talk to their neighbor. All of third grade is saying the same thing though
Sharon - we do short versions all day, brad... like calendar... today is monday... what if i took off the /m/ and added a /b/
Mrs. J - We have one per elementary in our district, Alta
Kim-1/Ca - Do Yopp Singer Brad............. also letter/sounds, San Diego quick.............
brad - so does this book I bought. Probably same test. Author seems to really be into that program from my skimming
Mrs. J - Me too, Erin. I am going crazy with the opening of desks too
Kim-1/Ca - with their finger........they "boing" the stretched out rubber band YOU are holding............
brad - poor erin, getting any better at all?
eRIN - We do not have lit coaches at our schools in my district
brad - At least you can ttell, Mrs. J. We have open desks and I swear I'm about to go kindergarten on them and make them sit with hands folded on top of desk.
Mrs. J - This may be the last year with lit coaches though. Our lovely governor cut funding to the grant we were using to pay for them
eRIN - A little. A touching moment today. I am reading Winn Dixie and a boy shared how his mom had died when he was three. I had known this but it was awesome that he felt comfortable enough to share
Glenda1st TN - We do not have lit coaches or Title I services this year. If my students are struggling it is up to me this year.
Kim-1/Ca - Keep blending............keep that phonemic awareness going........all the time. Today is Friday. If Joshua started with an F like Friday, he would be Foshua............If brad started with an F he would be frad................and rhyme a lot.........
diane . - lol...i just fell asleep with my laptop in my lap...looooonnnnnngggg week
cavey - Well guys, in five minutes my coach turns back into a pumpkin, and you wouldn't want to see that!
Sharon - brad and kim... do you use "punch out" the kinesthetic sounding out where they hold their palm parallel to the floor and slide it along with the sounds and then make a fist and punch forward on the word? for some reason that works with lots of mine
eRIN - Brad, my group is nothing compared to yours....how was your week? I have been gone every night this week so I couldn't email you
cavey - Goodnight everyone!
eRIN - Bye cavey!!!!
Kim-1/Ca - diane............get some tea and go to bed.
Alta Rose - Night, Cavey!
Mrs. J - bye cavey
brad - better, erin, better (still reading sharon)
Sharon - g'night cavey
eRIN - Kim you better hope no ones name is Buck
Kim-1/Ca - no sharon.......but that sounds great..................
Alta Rose - Lol, Erin!
Kim-1/Ca - rrr eRIN
diane . - i think i might...it's only 9:00, but i was up until 1:30 last night
Mrs. J - or Bart
diane . - night, cavey
brad - best week yet, but still not "up to par" I mentioned behavioral plan I'm trying next week before you got here
Alta Rose - Erin, that reminds me...
eRIN - Sorry, Kim, couldn't pass it up
naneb - I am going too, talk to y'all later
eRIN - Bye nan
Sharon - night, nan
brad - You two explain this boinging and punching again
Kim-1/Ca - you guys are misplaced comedians.........you could quit teaching and go on Comedy Central..............and make big BUCKS
brad - bye nan, maybe catch you sun
eRIN - I've thought of it Kim...
Alta Rose - I heard Sherry Fitch, a Canadian author who writes books that play with language speak...
Kim-1/Ca - Brad picture your two thumbs. Both thumbs up.
naneb - Okay bye brad
brad - LOok who's talking, KimBERly
Sharon - i can't describe it any better, brad
Kim-1/Ca - Put a LONG rubber band over each thumb. Stretch it out.
brad - THUMBS UP WHERE???
Alta Rose - When she talks to kids she tells them to switch the first letters of their first and last names and see what they get..
brad - but it scrolled off too fast, sharon, can you post again? Sorry
eRIN - Brad, that's where Buck comes in
diane . - can't keep eyes open, good night all...
eRIN - OH Alta.....
Sharon - ok... first step... take your thumbs outta yer nose
eRIN - bye diane!!!
Alta Rose - One day, one of the kids asked her what she gets when she does her name..
brad - Toothpicks, diane!!
Kim-1/Ca - (I have a suggestion as to WHERE.........) In front of your body. Like Fonzie.
Alta Rose - She replies "Ferry Shitch!" The whole school was on the floor laughing! Kids and teachers!
Glenda1st TN - Kim, I'm paying attention. I know where the thumbs go. Keep stretching.
eRIN - LOL....That's great!!!
Sharon - punch out... hold your palm parallel to the floor about chest high... slide it from left to right as you say the sounds in the word... then make a fist and punch forward and say the word
eRIN - Everytime I read Mr. Falker...I'm afraid I'm going to slip
Kim-1/Ca - Now you stretch the rubber band out <<<<<< thumb rubber band thumb >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
brad - thanx, sharon. I think I need video though. LOL
Sharon - same premise as the rubber band, wouldn't you say, kim?
brad - bleucheese
Alta Rose - My son is taking guitar lessons from one of my collegues. The other day when I picked him up, he kept talking about his G String. I could hardly keep a straight face. Sorry, I'll get back on task now!
Kim-1/Ca - Now, you raise it up so it is level with your big mouth......................and you say the word very slowly, matching the phonemes with PLACES on the rubber band. Friday............F will be by your right thumb, r will be a bit away..........all the way to day which will be by your left thumb..............
brad - brb, thirsty
Sharon - lol, alta rose!
Kim-1/Ca - yes sharon.........a VISUAL and kinesthetic matching to the auditory phonemes.
Glenda1st TN - Sharon, If your the teacher, shouldn't you slide your hands Right to left? This way it is right to left for the students to view.
Kim-1/Ca - Oh for HEAVEN's SAKE.......he tortures me for a detailed explanation.........then leaves for a drink.
Mrs. J - lol, sharon
Kim-1/Ca - I go right to left, Glenda...............then I ask them to "Boing" where they hear (or SEE ) the sound I am looking for..............
Sharon - i guess so, glenda... it's never been an issue... it's not really for tracking purposes
brad - who boings and when and how?
brad - LOL a co ckatoo
Kim-1/Ca - I bet he is messing with me.......the dirty scumsucking dog...............
brad - do you have any more cute sound mnemonics, sharon, like the "crying baby a" and "doctor o"?
eRIN - Kim, calm down.....
brad - I DO NOT SUCK SCUM!
eRIN - Now he's ignoring you Kim
brad - scuck sum?
Sharon - did you get the other short vowels?
eRIN - Never mind
Kim-1/Ca - rackemstackemstinkenfrackennogoodfernuthingrachemstackenm..........
brad - yes, sharon. I remember bully brothers or something like that
brad - alright yosemite who boings and when and how
Glenda1st TN - Sharon, I so something very similar. I hold my hands up as if they are stopping someone. Then I move one hand behind the other as I make each sound and progress right to left with each sound. "stop" would have 4 hand movements. "The" would only have 2.
Kim-1/Ca - He WAS messing with me....................
Alta Rose - That's OK, Kim, the rest of us were learning....
Alta Rose - brb
eRIN - Kim, I appreciated your explanation
Sharon - i like that glenda
Kim-1/Ca - Thank you very much, rest of you.
brad - Kim you're so touchy these days. Must be the Saxon
Sharon - what friggin' bully brothers?
Kim-1/Ca - You just have to make sure they don't boing too..........uh, exuberantly........................
brad - (the lack of Saxon?)
Glenda1st TN - Would someone tell me if Brad was acting up. I thought he really wanted to learn about this. BRAD!!!!
Kim-1/Ca - OOOh! The Bully Brothers Trick the Tooth Fairy! Dang fine reading...........
eRIN - Glenda, it's difficult to tell.
brad - Bully Brothers OO I think were the bully brothers like in FOOD
brad - I have Bully Brothers go trick or treating
Sharon - do you know the one for r-controlled vowels? the rooster crow: ar or ir ur er
brad - Cause they say "Ooooo"
brad - No, that's good
Kim-1/Ca - My kids LOVE the two OO sounds.............we sorted oots and ooks yesterday...............they like oots better.
bleuteach - what is that?
Glenda1st TN - Sharon, I use Her First Nurse Works Early for the "er" sounds
brad - do you call them anything cute, kim?
Mrs. J - Sounds like ghost brothers to me
eRIN - Well, I need to go. Washing machine broke last night and flooded half my house. Fortunately my neighbor got all the water up ( and fortunately we have tile) but I now have 50,000 loads of wet towels to take care of.
Kim-1/Ca - Her First Nurse Works Early.
eRIN - Also while running I slipped on the tile because I didn't know it was wet and can't lift my arm up
brad - Give them to Jan for throwing on ambitious plans, erin!
bleuteach - spalding! I teach that too!
Kim-1/Ca - No, I just hold both my hands up like binoculars and say "oo"
eRIN - So all in all it's been a lovely week
Alta Rose - Take Care, Erin. Don't work too hard!
eRIN - Bye all. Hopefully I'll be in better shape next week.
brad - For which one, Kim OO as in Book or OO as in hoot
Kim-1/Ca - Okay, eRIN............ take care
Kim-1/Ca - HOOT..........
Glenda1st TN - Blueteach, do you do all of the phonograms in spalding?
bleuteach - why binoculars?
Sharon - you make two o's, bleuteach
bleuteach - yes but introduce a few each week
Kim-1/Ca - and then two ASL "e" signs (both hands) for the two "ee"s like in eek.
Alta Rose - What grade do you teach, bleuteach?
bleuteach - first grade teacher
bleuteach - do you teach all ers at once?
Kim-1/Ca - LIKE binoculars............I actually keep my hands below my head........the curled fingers remind them of the 'o' in sign language..........they connect to that.
brad - good question, bleu
Glenda1st TN - I teach 3 the first day and the last 2 on the next day. Or at least I did for the last few years. I'm doing it differently this year.
Sharon - ers?
brad - rooster crow sharon
bleuteach - I've been trying to think of a better way too. They get so confused!
Kim-1/Ca - r-controlled vowels, sharon
bleuteach - how are you thinking of doing it?
Glenda1st TN - Sharon I think Bleuteach is talking about the "er" sounds in Her First Nurse Works Early.
brad - how do you all teach Cve patterns?
Sharon - yep... and i have a rooster up with big letters ar (big space) or (big space) er ir ur (grouped together)
Kim-1/Ca - I dont' know......this is my first go-around with first grade........I dont' know how Open Court or Grace's program does it...........
Glenda1st TN - Brad I teach the 5 rules for silent e.
Sharon - VCe patterns, brad?
brad - what are they glenda (i was always told not to call the e silent)
Kim-1/Ca - CUTE sharon! Really cute! I like it! I like it!
brad - yes, Vce lol
bleuteach - I teach the 5 rules for e, too.
Kim-1/Ca - Perhaps I could.......uh..........borrow that idea...............! Hmmmmmmmm..............
Sharon - lol... kim... you should hear them crow those sounds!
Glenda1st TN - Bleuteach, this year, I'm introducing the phonograms and writing them on paper keys and adding them to my word wall.
Sharon - magic e, brad... jumps over one letter and if it lands on a vowel it whispers "say your name"
bleuteach - good idea, Glenda!
brad - I was thinking for Making Words of having a tile that has an "o" and an "e" hooked together somehow so the consonant tile could rest in between. . . comments?
Kim-1/Ca - So you have the "ar"s and the "ir"s................spaced so they can crow?
Glenda1st TN - Blueteach, would you be interested in sharing ideas this year on how to make Spalding a little less dry without giving up the good stuff?
bleuteach - yes!@ That is always a concern!
brad - There's nothing like a little Dry Spalding to kill your appetite
bleuteach - I made up a game that they enjoy.....
Sharon - try to say it that way, kim.... AR OR ER IR UR (like a crowing sound)
Kim-1/Ca - hmmmmmm...........veddy interesting idea.............(colonel klink voice)
Alta Rose - Sharon, how do you use your rooster? Can you elaborate?
Kim-1/Ca - Dry Spalding is good with red meat........
Glenda1st TN - Bleuteach, I've sent you my email.
bleuteach - LOL......
Sharon - it's just a visual reminder, alta rose... i crow the r-controlled vowels
brad - I prefer Vintage Spalding
Alta Rose - Thanks, Sharon. Good idea.
Kim-1/Ca - OR like in oar..........or ..... OR like in works?
brad - You mean how does she use her cockatiel, not her rooster
Mrs. J - I'm getting the crow on the last three, but not getting how the ar, or sound with it, too bad you can't leap off the page and crow for me
brad - Rofl, I slay me
Sharon - brad, you mean that the vowel and final e would be connected and you would switch out the consonant between them?
brad - yes, like one long tile or something such
Mrs. J - us too, brad
Glenda1st TN - Funny, I've never gotten the "kick" from the Dry Spalding or the Vintage Spalding that I get from Uncle Jack.
Kim-1/Ca - like on popsicle sticks, brad.....hmmm....
Sharon - for them to make words?
brad - yes, sharon. Aha with popsicle stix, Kim says. . .hmmmm noodling
Sharon - grad class said bad idea to that... that you need to have kids focus on each letter and if it's constant like that they don't tend to
Kim-1/Ca - yes ...... but forcing them to manipulate that consonant between the medial vowel and the final e.........
Sharon - they need to manipulate the letters each time
Kim-1/Ca - giving them JUST enough space...............nOOdle nOOdle..........
brad - I don't understand the argument Sharon
Kim-1/Ca - Yes..............but the FIRST and/or second time...............what do you think sharon?
Kim-1/Ca - kinda scaffolding them while the rule JELLS
Glenda1st TN - I tend to agree with Sharon. If they have to keep that silent e from moving into another space, they may remember it better.
Sharon - they quickly recognize that the v and the silent e aren't changing when they make the word so they don't attend to them
brad - I already put digraphs on one tile (sh, th, etc.) so they wouldn't use the s and the h and get it confused with ssss and hhhh
Sharon - that's different, brad
Kim-1/Ca - I have no experience with this in Making Words.......so far I have done CVC patterns...........
Glenda1st TN - Brad, I have my students do "phonogram searches".
brad - But if I provide options? Either use the plain "o" or the "o-e" tile??
Kim-1/Ca - sorting by medial vowels, phonograms, glenda?
bleuteach - explain that Glenda...I want to see if it is different from what I do?
Sharon - kim... do you teach featured chunks each week, too?
Mrs. J - Well, I'm going to call it a night too. It's late. My school is having a street party tomorrow
Sharon - that would work, brad... mix up short and long vowels
Kim-1/Ca - needy ones might NEED that special tile..............for awhile.
Sharon - g'night mrs. j
bleuteach - street party sounds interesting!
Alta Rose - Bye Mrs. J.
bleuteach - a fund-raiser?
Mrs. J - night all
Kim-1/Ca - I combine Making Words (Judy Lynch version) with Grace's spelling program.........matching featured chunks for now.........
brad - that's what I'm thinking Kim. I already have one who I know is ahead who keeps using s and h for sh. I remind her for now that s is /s/ and h is /h/ and only sh is /sh/
Kim-1/Ca - then the word wall for sight words................
Glenda1st TN - I put a phonogram (sh) on the board or a word family (at). I have the students look in their books and write at least 5 words with that phonogram or word family.
Mrs. J - No, bleu teach. Just a street fair kind of thing as part of a community involvement grant. We're having the smoke house for fire safety, food, music, face painting, etc.
Kim-1/Ca - Yes........I connect the /sh/ to somebody's name ALL THE TIME.
bleuteach - wow...sounds fun!
Sharon - i'm thinking of modifying my making words boards ... using elkonin boxes instead
brad - After they make the word I'm having them push up each sound-picture as we stretch the word
Glenda1st TN - Bleuteach, did you get my email address?
bleuteach - That's how I've done it too. Thanks for reminding me..I'd forgotten
brad - sharon, long time, explain those again
bleuteach - yes, I got it.....
Kim-1/Ca - I like the boxes.......but Making Words doesn't always stick to just 3 or 4 letters..............the elkonin box helps with phonemic awareness................
Sharon - basically an extra scaffold... number of boxes= number of phonemes
brad - haven't used elkonin since my first assignment in university
Glenda1st TN - Great. Let me know when you want to get started brainstorming.
brad - maybe I could give them just to strugglers?
bleuteach - we're supposed to use Elkonion box..but forgot how!
Kim-1/Ca - well..........sharon.........would you have them fit "ship" into 3 boxes then?
Sharon - yes, brad
Alta Rose - brb
Sharon - yes, kim
brad - but isn't that redundant if I have digraphs on one tile. So there are 3 tiles for ship--sh, i, and p
Kim-1/Ca - show me where you heard the /a/ sound.........point to where you heard the /c/ sound..........
brad - so elkonin's would be redundant
bleuteach - glenda, have you started entering Ayres yet?
Kim-1/Ca - Oh....................(light clicks on) duh
Sharon - well... the difference is that there wouldn't be a box for the silent e... it would go off the board
Glenda1st TN - Oh no. I'm not doing the spelling words with Spalding this year.
Kim-1/Ca - I find the "extra letters" confoozle them.................
brad - about how long do you spend on this kind've stuff sharon and kim (and others)
Sharon - no brad... it is the scaffold that appeals to me for strugglers... it tells them how many sounds they should listen for
Glenda1st TN - Our system buys us these silly spelling workbooks so I thought this year I would be an honest teacher and try to use them.
Sharon - no kim... they build the word in the elkonin boxes
Kim-1/Ca - I also have them WRITE the words immediately after making them...........Grace's suggestion.
bleuteach - yes, we have those "great" spelling workbooks too.
brad - Sharon could that work for spelling too? for example they ask how to spell a word and I say try it first, and draw elkonin's for them??
Sharon - i add it to word wall time... about 15 mins of making words... and i have pulled small groups that struggle with it to work more
Kim-1/Ca - Or pennies, brad..................!
Alta Rose - Elkonins? Sorry for my ignorance.
Sharon - i use have-a-go's for that brad... and i just draw blanks really quickly if they need it
brad - that's what i do sharon. so i'm spending the half hour word block time working on this. just curious how others do it
brad - okay, sharon. I'm making have-a-go's this weekend. Starting to get tired of "how do you spell's" last year's third, I asked them to stretch sounds and they could and pretty much get it. This year they are heavily dependent and I discovered why. They spell everything for them in first. ugh
Glenda1st TN - Brad, I've got these lovely spelling workbooks to use so I've been doing them on Monday and Wednesday and doing make words on Tuesday Thursday and Friday.
Kim-1/Ca - i plan to read up on word wall activities this weekend................it's getting to that point.........i need to DO something with them. about 20 now.
brad - what do you mean, getting to that point, Kim?
Sharon - my have-a-go's have three blanks for them to try and only then can they ask for help if they still want it
brad - me too sharon
Alta Rose - Making Words 3 times a week, Glenda?
Sharon - when they're filled i date them and file them to show their progress (hopefully)
Kim-1/Ca - Well......i need them to start DOING things with the word wall words. I TELL and cajole and wheedle them to use the words in their writing..........but we need to DO something to help them remember.
Glenda1st TN - Brad, I don't spell words for my students. I always tell them to write what they hear and then show it to me. My E.
Glenda1st TN - . however spells everything for them. Any suggestions on how to tactfully tell her to stop?
brad - I made words all this week, alta. Very simple, changing or adding or stripping only one phoneme at a time. Not a true making words with the target word at the end and such.
Kim-1/Ca - I bought words but I think they may be too small.........or the kids desks are too far away..............sigh.
brad - I never filed them last year, sharon. I should do that this year. Thanks
Sharon - i also like to mix up making words with chunk work
Alta Rose - Oh, I see. I was wondering when you'd do all the other WWWords stuff.
Sharon - i made mine on the computer, kim
Alta Rose - Is this Spalding program you all are talking about good?
brad - kim, I know it's a no-no to some, but I let them take the word off the wall to take back to seat. Also recommend personal word walls on file folders
Kim-1/Ca - I want to start doing more SORTS........i just don't have enough classroom help..........sigh.
bleuteach - do you mark the phonograms on your word wall words?
Sharon - that's a reason i like to do weekend journals on monday too... i have one journal to pick up that shows their writing progress from week one to the very last week of school
Alta Rose - Why would that be a no-no, brad?
brad - Alta, in second, there really wasn't a whole lot of activity options in the m by m book in Sept.
Kim-1/Ca - not yet, bleuteach........do you?
Glenda1st TN - Alta, Spalding is very similar to Grace's program. I think Grace's program may be more child friendly.
brad - I don't know, someone told me that wasn't a good idea, and I don't remember who
bleuteach - thinking about it
Sharon - i put a star on them
Glenda1st TN - Bleuteach, Can you believe that nevery crossed my mind. I'll do it on Monday when we add our words for the week. Thanks
Alta Rose - Did you purchase Grace's program from her site?
brad - so, alta, I just started doing this to kind've assess where they are in terms of sounds, phonemic awareness.
bleuteach - who is this Grace?
Kim-1/Ca - Yes.......well worth the money. I am pleased so far.
Kim-1/Ca - Cheaper than spelling books! LOL
brad - We did interviews, and my seconds are so low the first few actual word wall weeks, we barely got past on the back, so. . . i'm just now getting into activities
Alta Rose - I should look into it.
Sharon - a brilliant woman, bleuteach... i love to read her posts and visit her website
bleuteach - please share her website
brad - I was thinking of making a chunk wall up above my word wall, sorted by vowel sound
Alta Rose - brb...Blueteach, I'll find her site for you.
Sharon - kim, do you have the addy handy?
Kim-1/Ca - Grace/IL........ she is our very own Dr. Haskins. She is a retired first grade teacher. Wrote a spelling program: Roots for 1st grade, Trunks for 2nd grade.
Kim-1/Ca - gsh@mc.net
Sharon - i think spelling was part of her dissertation
bleuteach - I've read that it is more appropriate for word walls to be in chunks/ word families rather than alpha order
Alta Rose - Here is Grace's site: http://www.spellangtree.org/
Kim-1/Ca - Yes, it was...........she knows her stuff.
Sharon - no... her website addy, kim
Kim-1/Ca - all of her posts have the link : spel lang tree
brad - word walls are for high frequencies, so how could it possibly be in chunks?? who said this??
bleuteach - looks interestng! thanks!
Sharon - month by month has some chunk words, brad
Sharon - i don't use the list though
brad - yes, they do sharon, which is why i was thinking of having chunk wall. it's described in word wall book by Janiel Wagstaff (very good book Kim, for word wall)
Kim-1/Ca - I think that might be too cumbersome...........word wall by chunks..............
Glenda1st TN - Bleuteach, I'm using my word wall for the frst time this year. I don't think it would work as well in chucks.
Sharon - i have a chunk wall... made those on the 'puter too
Kim-1/Ca - I can see a specialty word wall area.............word families.......... like a topic board or something.
bleuteach - I didn't see how either; but I like Brad's idea of putting another wall with chunks
brad - do they refer to it much sharon?
Sharon - glenda... the chunk wall is just as effective for me as the word wall is... they're both valuable
Kim-1/Ca - I need more wall...stupid Saxon sucks up wall space.............grrrrrrrrr
Sharon - yes, they do, brad
brad - I also have a little area for some theme words (around this time they're interested in Halloween words) It's just on chart paper and changes though
bleuteach - do you add to the chunk wall as you go?
Kim-1/Ca - A ceiling Wall........
Sharon - yes, bleuteach
brad - I need more wall too kim, how does saxon take up space?
bleuteach - hey! that's a lot of wasted space!
bleuteach - I've seen classrooms that painted the ceiling tiles...hmmmmmm
Sharon - i got a copy of the 37 most common rimes (which can help with decoding over 500 words) and broke it down week by week
Hoeface - I need a makeover
Glenda1st TN - Sharon, I like the chuck wall idea but I would want it in addition to my word wall. Do you do both?
brad - It's those windows Kim. Who needs 'em, I say!
Kim-1/Ca - i have a teacher friend who uses a pull down map type system..............she pulls the saxon stuff down each morning and then flips it back up when finished................
Sharon - yes, glenda
Alta Rose - I wish I had room to do both!
Hoeface - can any one help
brad - good idea kim or those portable science fair thingies
bleuteach - what words did you start your chunk wall with?
Sharon - no... no one can help... you are terminally stooopid
brad - saxon math or phonics?
brad - LOL sharon
Kim-1/Ca - yeah.............another friend says she has her overhead BEAM right up to the ceiling..........!
bleuteach - I really like that idea & have some room!
brad - I've thought of that KIM, but mine would just lay in the floor
Sharon - you can see on the "sneak peek ahead" page on my website http://www.pcboe.net/les/teacher/elder/index.htm
Kim-1/Ca - Saxon MATH Brad, MATH! MATH! Write it 5 times each.
Big Hoe - hi I am too later
bleuteach - I bet the kids love that; lay on the floor! why not? it would add spice to Dry Spalding! LOL
brad - (do these people just get drunk and cruise chat rooms?)
brad - what can we see sharon?
bleuteach - Sharon, can't get that link to work
Sharon - i went to a workshop once where they suggested putting sight words on the ceiling and windows
Alta Rose - I surfed your site, already, Sharon. It looks great!
Big Hoe - wweb pages are boring. Do you really think any reads them but you?
Sharon - works for me *shrug*
brad - but sharon, I open my windows.
Sharon - she asked about the chunks i use, brad
bleuteach - then your words are "out of sight" LOL
Big Hoe - Parents like to get a few beers in them and laugh at the web pages
Glenda1st TN - Brad, If you open you windows, then I guess you need them.
Kim-1/Ca - I had to have the chalkboard removed in order to put up the word wall...............so I am relying on my easels right now. But .......... I think I may have been a bit hasty.
Big Hoe - Are teachers always this boring
brad - I just put my word wall on chalkboard Kim. Magnetic.
bleuteach - Last year I put paper up over my chalkboard and used it for my word wall. It worked great!
Big Hoe - I bet. It looked like an inner city
Kim-1/Ca - Yeah..thought of that one Brad...........but it was a CHALK board................
Alta Rose - Mine is on the space below my white board.
Sharon - magnetic paint, kim?
Glenda1st TN - I just use that "sticky stuff" and put it on my white board.
Big Hoe - For midgets to look at
Sharon - mine is above the white board and i use a lazer pointer to refer to them
brad - sticky stuff?
bleuteach - flashlights would work too!
Kim-1/Ca - Well, too late now, Sharon! I think I might rearrange things a bit when I get some spare time...........ha ha
brad - A laser pointer??
brad - Sharon's high tech
Glenda1st TN - You know, It looks like clay, but can be used again and again.
bleuteach - in the dark! fun for kids to do
Alta Rose - My kids love the flashlight game with WWwords?
Sharon - i use flashlights with that chant for a game with it, bleuteach
brad - Oh, rubber cement, Glenda?
bleuteach - tell me the chant...sounds fun!
Kim-1/Ca - Alta.......share THAT idea.
Sharon - lazers are great, brad... i can be across the room and flash it on a word i want to refer to
brad - they're good for eye surgery too. LOL
Glenda1st TN - Brad, I can never tell when you are teasing and when you really have a question. One day I will get even. Just wait.
Alta Rose - Flashlight, flashlight, shine so bright. Shine on a word, with your light! I give one of the kids the flashlight, they shine on a word, we read, spell and chant it, etc.
brad - glenda, you would know if we were in person
bleuteach - cute!
Sharon - give two kids flashlights... like a pistol match... then chant flashlight, flashlight oh so bright... shine on this word with all your might... the word is _________... first kid to shine the light on the word stays up
Alta Rose - They are always begging for that game.
brad - ooh, that's good sharon
Kim-1/Ca - Hmm........of course, PROCEDURES would have to be taught on that one.........but good idea!
bleuteach - love it!
Glenda1st TN - I'm sure. But since I can't see that devilish twinkle in your eye i will just have to fall for your pranks.
Alta Rose - I like that one, too, Sharon!
brad - procedures scare me
Kim-1/Ca - OH! yeah......terrific idea, Sharon!
Kim-1/Ca - I know they do, honey. Uncross your legs now.
bleuteach - oh there go the flashlights we got for the hurricane!!
Kim-1/Ca - wonder if they have them at the dollar store..................don't like to go in there too much. scary people...........(shudder)
Glenda1st TN - Good one Kim.
Kim-1/Ca - gawl I hope so............sheesh what jerk
Alta Rose - Off topic: My son is moving to a new class on Monday. (Same school)
brad - ????
Glenda1st TN - Alta, explain
Alta Rose - They hired another Gr. 4 teacher due to high numbers and asked who would be willing to have their child move to a new class.
brad - mmm...... beef jerky (homer drool)
Glenda1st TN - How do you feel about the move?
bleuteach - how long have you been in school?
bleuteach - I sorta figured that out; thanks Kim!
Alta Rose - My son's teacher has been really stressed out due to other things in her life and taking it out on the kids. My son didn't complain, but I had "inside information." So when we got the chance to move, we took it. He spent this afternoon with his new teacher and is very happy.
brad - while waiting for alta's story. How did you get to us this evening bleuteach
bleuteach - boy, that worked out well for you then!
Glenda1st TN - Great. It looks like this may have been an answer to a prayer.
Kim-1/Ca - Then it sounds good, Alta Rose...........
Sharon - so it's an improvement then?
brad - taking it out how? (if you don't mind asking)
bleuteach - um.......through the back door?
Alta Rose - Yes, I think so. Even though he didn't complain, you could see some of the enthusiasm for school was gone.
Alta Rose - Lots of yelling, Brad.
Kim-1/Ca - lol bleu.......
brad - just wondering how you heard of our group.
Sharon - or busy maybe?
Glenda1st TN - Alta, I'm having similar problems with my son and he is in the 10th grade.
brad - did you wear a raspberry beret while coming in through the out door?
bleuteach - didn't; saw chat on the home page; and thought I'd check it out
Alta Rose - My two friends who teach at that school told me that in confidence. They were concerned for my son.
brad - do you come around tnet much?
bleuteach - at least that's what I think happened...was looking for lessons in science and got sidetracked!
Glenda1st TN - Bleuteach, I'm glad you joined us.
brad - That's nice of them to tell you alta. I hope it works out.
Alta Rose - So when presented with the decision to make, my son phoned up a friend who had this teacher last year. He got off the phone and said, "Joel said she's really nice, she doesn't yell and she makes jokes. I want to move."
Kim-1/Ca - normally, we discuss professional literature, bleu..........but we have had some major classroom changes and adjustments..........so we are trying to get our stride back.
bleuteach - thanks! I'm glad too......
brad - I'm just very nosy and sarcastic and very protective of what we have here. YOu seem decent though. First of all I enjoy bleu cheese, and that was my first clue
brad - That's very strange alta (change in behavior) feel sorry for her a little
bleuteach - so if I tell you my name has NOTHING to do with cheese you will hate me???
Kim-1/Ca - (Homer drool) ...bleu cheese and french fries............
brad - exactly bleu (sheesh)
Glenda1st TN - Brad, I didn't realize you had taken on the roll of "Gaurd" I feel so much safer now.![]()
Kim-1/Ca - french cuisine? (cordon bleu?)
Sharon - how can you eat stuff that smells like dirty socks?
brad - why do you think I talk to Kim. Only because Kim used to be Kim-cheese-1/Ca
Kim-1/Ca - Well, Glenda.......Jan isn't here.......
brad - I can manage threads and guard at the same time, can't I?
Alta Rose - Actually, I was thinking you were French! (Bleu)
Kim-1/Ca - Oh, cheeze wiz brad......
brad - Where are Jan and Michelle. Acting like they have lives
Glenda1st TN - Yes, Brad you can and do it all very well.
bleuteach - Alta, you are much closer!
Kim-1/Ca - yeah.......... and all those who left EARLY..............sheesh.
Alta Rose - Ta Da!
brad - I've never been a Friday-go-out person. It's still a weekday to me. (Of course I worked every Fri. nite for 11 years)
Alta Rose - I agree with you, Sharon! (About the cheese)
brad - I like going out on Sat
Sharon - alta... did you find that the art work didn't take away from the connections?
Alta Rose - We were before the kids came...(Sigh)
Kim-1/Ca - Yeah..........I'm too tired on Friday nights.............never used to be................sigh
brad - we're getting older kim
Alta Rose - No, I don't think it did, Sharon. Of course we didn't spend TOO much time on it.
Sharon - good
Glenda1st TN - Well, folks speaking of kids. I've got to take my son to buy some bluejeans tomorrow. It is getting cooler in TN and he can't wear shorts much longer. I'm turning in. Nite all.
Kim-1/Ca - Of course....I'm cleaning the classroom, prepping, planning till 6:45.............no wonder.
Kim-1/Ca - ((Glenda))
Alta Rose - Take Care, Glenda!
Sharon - g'night glenda
Alta Rose - I have this huge paper blizzard in my room I can't get rid of.
Alta Rose - It's driving me crazy.
brad - I am so TIRED of kids PLAYING with their supplies. Swear to god, I'm going to community supplies.
Kim-1/Ca - I hear ya, Alta Rose................
Sharon - i did this year, brad... works great for me
brad - This was such a tiny problem in third, but in second, every five seconds someone's in their school box, playing.
bleuteach - rattling those crayons?? UGH!
Kim-1/Ca - I told half the class today that I thought RATS lived in their desks. i stood over them while they "cleaned." Ha...............
brad - And I hate those bust-open-every-time-you-drop-em school boxes. I gave out baggies at the beginning of the year, adn they STILL insist on bringing those piece-of-s-h-i-t boxes!!
Kim-1/Ca - Tapping the dang pencils............and the RULERS! I had to take them all away..............
bleuteach - I bought them this year, but will NOT again!
Kim-1/Ca - TELL me all about it, brother Brad! You are preaching to the choir, baby!
brad - glad to know it's not just my group. Must be the level.
bleuteach - went to tables this year; community supplies in a can work?
Sharon - i have tables too, bleuteach
Sharon - just have a cup of pencils on the tables
Kim-1/Ca - They become pig sties in a can.................cuz NOBODY is reponsible...............SHE did it................
bleuteach - how do you keep their supplies at tables?
brad - and of course their fave thing to do is spread glue over top the boxes, let it harden, and peel it off so it looks like a Fruit Roll-up (do you have those in Canada, alta?)
Alta Rose - Mine love to sharpen away with their pencil sharpeners. We never had them last year, but they are on the second grade list.
Alta Rose - Lol! Yes, we do, Brad.
Sharon - i ban those, alta
bleuteach - I've outlawed pencil sharpeners
brad - they're banned building-wide here, but some sneak them in
Kim-1/Ca - Alta..........no sharpeners allowed here.....................I use an electric one. ONLY me..pencils exchanged in a basket.....................problem eliminated.
bleuteach - me too....works except when they get a visitor to sharpen their pencils
Alta Rose - I would have too, if I'd have thought of it in time. The other second grade teachers had them on the list.
Kim-1/Ca - There's a new one, Brad...........oh brother...............
brad - And that's where we began. Kim, mine won't leave pencils. And then they want me to sharpen during day (against my policy; I sharpen all in morning)
Alta Rose - That's what I did last year, Kim.
Sharon - send them home, alta
brad - what's new, Kim (scrolling fast)
Kim-1/Ca - I swear,.....I have two kids who cart the kitchen sink around in their backpacks............come to school and UNLOAD...............oh, the garbage!
Alta Rose - I would have Sharon, but the parents would be complaining they bought them for nothing. So I'm putting up with them for this year.
brad - Me too Kim. I started putting on the overhead the ONLY THINGS that should be in their desk everyday when they come in.
Kim-1/Ca - I did a desk check today and confiscated the extras......................
Sharon - the moose worked well for me ... they unpack nothing but their moose and text
Kim-1/Ca - little toys, colored pencils, markers, extra crayons, glitter glue.................
brad - Adn I still have some who say, "I need to go to my locker to get my paper Mr. Johnson." Sheesh, didn't it say empty paper out of bookbag into desk on overhead????
Missy - Anyone have hair on upper lif?
Alta Rose - So I'm doing a combo of the two, and I tell mine the same, Brad. I only sharpen in morning.
brad - did you buy mooses yourself sharon and at what cost, cuz mine aren't bringing them in
Kim-1/Ca - stuffed animals, mom's eMails, an extra sweater and jacket and a vest.....................jewelry.
Alta Rose - We don't have lockers. Just coathooks inside the classroom.
Missy - Mine are not allowed to go to lockers all day.
Missy - Mine are not allowed to go to lockers all day.
Sharon - i made them and then charged the parents... all mine paid
Kim-1/Ca - There are many uses for Mooses.
brad - . . . .lots of makeup. . . .i have a huge collection of glitter lip gloss and green eye shadow for you gals if you want
Missy - H drives us all hume
Alta Rose - Lol, Brad!
Kim-1/Ca - We have cubbies and coathooks................yet................Jordan and Joseph always, always, always unload the LUGGAGE onto their desks...............then the floor...........
Alta Rose - And there's a new type of pokemon card out now. I can't remember how to say it.
Missy - They smoke weed in locckers
brad - I wonder. . . but if they already have planners provided by school, Sharon. . .? thoughts?
brad - same here with Javonte and Leo Kim
Alta Rose - brb
Sharon - brad, i found out that major corporations will donate the notebooks to schools... extra's left over from presentations and stuff
Kim-1/Ca - I wonder how they CARRY all that stuff? Yesterday, Jordan didn't get packed up in time. She was carrying her sweater, jacket, photo album, water bottle, sweatshirt..................PLUS the picture day notice! I was loading as we were walking, nagging her to leave all this garbage at HOME.
Alta Rose - Lol, Kim!
brad - I'm just about to that point, Sharon, where I crave something uniform. (just slightly anal, i think not)
brad - I've seen several news reports on how they think future generations are going to have back problems.
brad - Which is so funny. If you carried a backpack when I was growing up you were a NERD
bleuteach - don't you LOVE those rolling backpacks? NOT
Sharon - it has been very good for me... and my parents love it... they've even stopped the principal several times to tell her they want it in other classrooms for siblings
brad - The object was to carry as little as possible (me before third period, 'Do we really need our French books today?")
Kim-1/Ca - I kid you NOT. Then there is Joseph....................zipper pouches full of pencils, glue, scissors, glitter glue, glue sticks, stickers..........it takes him a full five minutes to decide what to write with......................
Kim-1/Ca - You mean the BANGING ON THE GROUND WHILE WE WALK backpacks? Oh yeah.................love 'em.
Alta Rose - That's my poor little Brady. Everyone else is done and he's still looking for his pencil.
Alta Rose - Hanging from his desk...
Kim-1/Ca - ......and the pencil rolls onto the floor...................again
brad - and then sits monica: paper, blue eye shadow, crayons, coloring book, library book, cute mickey mouse pad, pencil sharpener, umbrella, and NO FREAKING PENCIL. ("Can I do this in crayon?:" she says. Yeesh!)
Kim-1/Ca - Brad.............ROTFLMAO
bleuteach - I think we all have the same kids; different names!
Alta Rose - If he's back from the bathroom yet. I told him today he needs a "bathroom buddy" for the 20th time!
brad - the zoon-down-the-hall-Nimbus 2000 Backpacks on wheels??? Oh yea, they're good for swinging and putting out an eye.
Sharon - well guys... time for me to turn in... goodnight
Kim-1/Ca - Pull out your blue crayon. Your BLUE crayon. (Deshawntania: "Teacher..............can we use any color we want?")
brad - oh, sharon, you're a trooper, do come back
Kim-1/Ca - (((sharon)))
Alta Rose - Is that her name, Kim? That's really unique.
Sharon - i bet missy has lots of bathroom buddies... heh... goodnight all
Alta Rose - Night, Sharon!
brad - LOL< KIM. Write your name on top of your paper. (michael: Where do we write it? What are we writing?
Sharon - sorry ... couldn't resist
brad - we forgive sharon
Kim-1/Ca - Uh, yeah.............i have lots of unique names..............she doesn't even write it...................desintegrates around sh............
brad - LOL, I still have one who can't write last name.
brad - I just started noticing the other day
Kim-1/Ca - lazy and toody.................

Alta Rose - Right.
Kim-1/Ca - Brad..............how are things going with the illustrious teacher down the hall? Miss. Happines and Light.
brad - Oh, there's juicy on that Kim, but I don't have the full story yet. apparently she was raising unrrelated to me cane down the hall today that I caught bits and pieces of. Give you full story soon.
Kim-1/Ca - yeah...............sturm and drangst huh?
brad - oy vey. she pretty much sticks to herself so far this year, but. . .
brad - she was floating some real crap earlier this week and last and . . . well. . .
Kim-1/Ca - it does usually float to the top, you know.............
brad - She's mad because I plan with my partner across the hall. And she said, "(building principal) said Partner and Brad are team planning and we're not supposed to be doing that." What baloney! She's (prince) has never said that, and if she did, I'd wig out on prince. She's stirring the pot
brad - She's just jealous no one wants to plan with her.
Kim-1/Ca - Put a wooden spoon in her mailbox Brad.......................for stirrng the pot
Kim-1/Ca - it's just the syntax, etc. I am surrounded by teenaged boys
brad - LOL, KIM, I should. (my partner and I would get it. We could privately snicker. (*I love privately snickering))\
Alta Rose - Lol! Well, guys, I am going to turn in now. Goodnight!
brad - OH, alta
Kim-1/Ca - ((alta))
Kim-1/Ca - Do it, brad, seriously................put a cute little ribbon on it. "for stirring the pot."
Kim-1/Ca - anonymously ............ of course
brad - I would get in such trouble Kim. Best to just leave anonymously
Kim-1/Ca - definitely...............fersure
Kim-1/Ca - wipe for prints first
brad - LOL, remember the story about making bread versus teaching reading
Kim-1/Ca - yup
brad - My Partner (sounding gay) said she's brought something in every week to eat since school started and this week it's been every day.
brad - syntax. LOL. Like there was syntax in that garbled mess
Kim-1/Ca - does she post the recipe?
Kim-1/Ca - well.............tone? smartassedness?
brad - no, but today she offered cactus (apparently it was in the story, and she didn't care for it)
brad - by the way, how are your smartasses?
Kim-1/Ca - yuck
brad - Partner said it tasted like pickles
Kim-1/Ca - school or home?
brad - Partner tries too hard to be nice
brad - home
brad - I just rolled my eyes when she offered.
brad - (I'm known for my eye rolling)
Kim-1/Ca - Danny settling in nicely.............. I really miss him. Dustin is working a LOT and doing the senior year thing. All is well. How about yours?
brad - well, I'm sitting in a messy basement with a garbage bag ready to go if that's any indicator
brad - There's some deep dark talking with accompanying grounding coming tomorrow too
Kim-1/Ca - lol.............a garbage bag?
Kim-1/Ca - all their toys? hee hee hee....
brad - remember when the boys were young? the endless mess? How they promised they would play with one toy at a time?
Kim-1/Ca - yes........oh god yes..............the little pieces.....................
brad - tripping on Hot Wheels, stepping on Legos (ouch), and finding Barbie's evening gown on the stairway?
brad - well the sh it goes down in the morning. This is nuts
Kim-1/Ca - It got better for Dustin..............for Danny, normally so fastidious...................this is why we have bedroom doors.
brad - WE have no toys in bedrooms now in the new house. Only in basement
Kim-1/Ca - better................but still not perfect..................you KNOW it takes time to train..............patience, dad, patience......................
brad - but must be able to walk through basement to get from garage to living room/kitchen
brad - That's what I mean. Time is up, sister, and the reaper, she's'a comin'!!
Kim-1/Ca - I'm talking about right now...........Danny is a slob................clothes, athletic gear, laundry.towels...............sheesh.\
Kim-1/Ca - No walking surface in his room. Now Dustin..............ou could eat off the flooor.
brad - I'm pretty convinced chelsey's gonna be a slob too. She's so freaking right brained (and on meds for ADD)
Kim-1/Ca - Very typical, brad.........................really
Kim-1/Ca - the natural consequence when you step on it................it goes inthe trash. Nothing said.
brad - It's just do you really have to pull out every toy drawer at once to play with??
Kim-1/Ca - When you are ADD.......................yes.
Kim-1/Ca - They all beckon
brad - but how do you live with? Honestly we both feel we ride her a s s all the time
Kim-1/Ca - Set reasonable expectations.............they will clean nightly, for example. In between.................tune it out
brad - Oh, but we do do that
brad - she can't even focus enough to "beat the clock"
brad - (I swear she's spitting out her pill or something) she hasn't been like this since before meds.
Kim-1/Ca - You pick your battles.................i know it is hard. She has to be trained to handle this stuff............it is a challenge for her. She needs organizational tools, places to put things, .................... a friend has an ADHD teen......................very hard.
brad - We've given her those things. Believe me meds were a final resort in January
Kim-1/Ca - She can't drive yet........mom too worried! Right meds?
Kim-1/Ca - You have to tweak those meds for a LONG time.................the right combo and dose makes alll the difference.
Kim-1/Ca - The meds will help..............tweak, baby, tweak.....................
brad - She was taking one pill. Little change. Switched to two. Definite change. Easier to get along with. Able to focus better. Went back to one pill when she went down to Dad's. Then switched back to two when she came back for school.
Kim-1/Ca - Is you son ADDalso?
brad - I don't think son is. I think he exhibits some of her traits, but is just mimicking her
Kim-1/Ca - yeah...................and some of that is just normal boy stuff........................seriously. So the baby may NOT be at risk unless YOU have it.................what a challenge.....................
brad - SHE is so opposite the two of us, though. In everything almost. I really question myself all the time.
Kim-1/Ca - wired differently, female................dad dynamics...............
brad - You feel like a bad parent, you know? You have to sort out what you can fix and what is "Just Chelsey"
brad - (Just Chelsey 2000?)
Kim-1/Ca - yes..........i know. it wasn't in the manual................you are one terrific role model, dad................just be patient and TWEAK those meds. Sometimes a combo helps.
brad - I wonder if jan or grace wrote a manual for this?? LOL
Kim-1/Ca - i can ask my friend what she put Katie on............... Katie is now 18 and self-modifies..............but she still needs structure.
Kim-1/Ca - Jan might know a LOT. Post a general question tomorrow..
brad - seriously though, this has been better week at school. Last week, I wanted to choke all of them. This week, just some slapping around would've done me.
brad - just joking before, why would Jan know a LOT?
Kim-1/Ca - hear ya.....better here too. principal real postive with me today. comptuer is acting up
Kim-1/Ca - Her experience............her reading. Who knows?
brad - She's such a font, that jan. (and not Times new roman)
Kim-1/Ca - I bet the ladies on the board have a wealth of information
Kim-1/Ca - century gothic
brad - I feel bad for her on other boards cause they really bite her head off (REER)
Kim-1/Ca - sheez it is 11:00 here....how re you going to get up tomorrow?
brad - And I know her intentions are good
brad - Well, I start by putting one foot out of the bed onto floor
Kim-1/Ca - they re jealous and insecure.............i like the fact that we can agree to disagree............no reering
Kim-1/Ca - I will post a question about my two ADHD kids.....................
brad - I don't accept much at face value, but Jan is like EF Hutton. when she talks, I listen. She can back the stuff up.
Kim-1/Ca - YES indeed..Grace too.
brad - I definitely value everyone's opinion, but those two. . .well, they have hard evidence
brad - AND experience
Kim-1/Ca - they read the research and they have experience..30 years worth
brad - I have learned way more the short time we've had this board than I've learned in all of my career
Kim-1/Ca - that'sll be us soon enough
brad - I hope so. I stand in awe.
Kim-1/Ca - it has solidified my thinking...............forced me to focus, cull, assess..........qustion
brad - I feel like I can back myself up more if anyone questions
Kim-1/Ca - compute ris delaying again....keyboard hinky
brad - maybe ho ho stuck in space key?
Kim-1/Ca - yes.......i agree
Kim-1/Ca - Black Cherry soda, ti ghtni.............dustin grrrrrrrrrrrr
