Teachers.Net Cross Grade Discussion
"Summer Reading Incentives & Programs"

Kathy/5/IA - Welcome to our Cross-Grade Focus Session on READING INCENTIVES!
fifth-g-teach - Hello Kathy, What incentives for reading do you have? My school year ends tomorrow. I'd like to send my fifth graders away with some ideas.
Kathy/5/IA - Hi fifth-g-teach! Congrats on your year ending tomorrow. I don't really have anything too exciting in place, I'm hoping to get some ideas tonight, also!
Kathy/5/IA - I have given my incoming class a sheet to record reading on during the summer in the past. Challenged to read ... had prized when they returned. (this was several years ago)
fifth-g-teach - We have a reading theme each year. Last year, was baseball. Students read and earned runs etc. Each class represented a major league team. This year we have taken countries and read arund the world. Next year is Space.
fifth-g-teach - I like your idea for next yeaars students.
Kathy/5/IA - Do you challenge them to read by minutes or #of books?
Kathy/5/IA - When I used that I taught 4th, my 5th graders went on to Middle School. Now I teach 5th and they go on to a whole different school, so I won't see this years class next year.
fifth-g-teach - It depends on the teacher and/or grade level. some used Accelerated Reader points. I used minutes per night. Parents signed calenders with time and book read.
Kathy/5/IA - I like your theme ideas! Sounds like your school works together!!!
Kathy/5/IA - Do you get a good response? I had parents sign sheets this year and they were due each Thurs. I had poor response. Either the kids didn't read, or the parents didn't help them keep track!
fifth-g-teach - We try. At mid year and at the end we celebrated with olympic style festivities. Parents supported me well this year. It depends on the year.
REI/2/IL - We started a program this year called "Principals Star". It is part of our school-wide AR program
fifth-g-teach - Please explain more.
Kathy/5/IA - Are you finding that AR is really helping motivate your students. I WISH we had that program!!!!!
fifth-g-teach - Principal's Star?
REI/2/IL - You bet! It has been a great motivator for all of the kids.
Kathy/5/IA - We really looked into AR this year. I thought we ordered it, but now I hear we didn't! I'm so bummed! I would think it would motivate, plus track reading abilities!!!
REI/2/IL - Each month we (the teachers) turn in two students names that we feel are worthy of being selected as a Principal Star
Kathy/5/IA - Fifth - you said you challenged by minutes during the year, right? How many minutes do you challenge your 5th graders to read each evening.
fifth-g-teach - Our kids love it. I give prizes for points. Also, we take trips to a local hamburger place to eat as a reward. It's great for comprehension. I ask for 20 minutes/ night for 20 days.
Kathy/5/IA - Do you have them turn in the calendar once a month then?
fifth-g-teach - Yes. MOST of them do turn it in after a few days. Our principal reads names of those who met their goals over the load speaker. One grade level per day.
REI/2/IL - 10 students are drawn from the nominations and then they have their picture taken with our principal. They get a t-shirt that says "I'm a Principals Star". Their picture is placed in a special display case wtih flashing lights all around it. It has become quite the big deal!
Kathy/5/IA - Sounds neat, REI!
Shelley/4/OK - Thanks Have you discussed using the AR or STAR program
fifth-g-teach - I use AR
Kathy/5/IA - Some use AR as an incentive. Haven't discussed it much.
Kat/Kathleen - Shelley, do they have summer reading programs? (AR and STAR)
Shelley/4/OK - Has it been successful for you
JJ/2/NM - Shelley, what is the STAR program??
PJ - What is AR? I would like to hear about new motivators.
Terry - We are fortunate because our school is right next to our public library. The library has a summer long contest and rewards students (and adults) with food coupons for number of books read at the end of summer
Kathy/5/IA - I've only heard good things about AR (Accelerated Reader)
Kat/Kathleen - Terry, that is ideal
JJ/2/NM - What is the STAR program??
fifth-g-teach - We have liked AR. We met our goals for the state of NC last year of one years growth for one years learning.
Shelley/4/OK - The STAR program is put out by the AR people
Kathy/5/IA - What is the difference between STAR and AR?
Shelley/4/OK - We are using it this year to help us place our 4th and 5th graders in a leveled class
Janet/Ar - We have great libraians here in Hot Springs. They are also cert. teachers and teach lessons from books, videos, roll play, among other things.
PJ - Are most of you into whole language?
Shelley/4/OK - STAR is a program that gives you the reading level of a student in about 10 min. It is the NEW pencil paper Gates McGinus reading test
Shelley/4/OK - I teach reading using only trade books
Kathy/5/IA - I also teach reading through trade books. I use an approach called Literature Circles.
PJ - Shelly, do you do literature circles at all?
Janet/Ar - I like whole language but it seems to be dying out somewhat. How do you all feel about that?
fifth-g-teach - Kat where do you get your ideas etc.?
Kathy/5/IA - PJ...do you do literature circles???!!!!!!
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, not dying out, but threatened to be misunderstood, in my opinion
Janet/Ar - Kathy, tell me more about literature circles. Sounds great!
Shelley/4/OK - How do you organize your Lit Circles? I will be teaching the highest reading level next year and will only have about 12 per class. I would like to use Lit circles
REI/2/IL - We have started using the STAR this year also. I really like the info. I can pull from it.
fifth-g-teach - Literature circles?
Kathy/5/IA - I have a great site on Literature Circles. I'll go get the address.
Shelley/4/OK - REI I am with you it is super!
Janet/Ar - Is there any info about Star and AR on internet? Thanks Kathy!!!
Shelley/4/OK - I can see if I can find their site..
PJ - Lit circles are great because you integrate varied levels of reading within the circle
Janet/Ar - Kat, I was hoping it would not die out because it can be a useful tool if used correctly! The problem is I do not think some of us know how to use it to benefit both students and teachers.
PJ - the best number is 4 or 5 in a circle
Janet/Ar - PJ, I like the idea of lit. circles.
Kat/Kathleen - TAlking about summer reading, I send mailings to my students with simple activities..I collect 4 stamped self addressed envelopes (business size) from each family to use for the mailings
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, the misunderstanding about teaching phonics within whole lang, is the problem
JJ/2/NM - Does anyone do any challenges like having the principal do something crazy if the students meet their goal???
PJ - You act as a facilitator overseeing the roles taken on by the students
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, you mean chaellnges for summer reading?
Kathy/5/IA - Here's a site about Lit. Circles. http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/docs/mla/circle/intro.html We'll have a focus session on Lit. Circles in the near future! Looks like their is a lot of interest.
Kat/Kathleen - Good idea, Kathy! ;-)
Janet/Ar - I agree Kat, I have seen some pretty bad whole language lessons and I have to agree. Schools here do not use whole language much at all here.
Kathy/5/IA - Do any of you challenge you kids to read a certain # of books in the summer?
JJ/2/NM - Kat, that or even throughout the schoolyear!
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, I've seen some pretty bad phonics lessons..I prefer a bad whole Lang. "lesson" to a bad phonics lesson if you know what I mean
Kathy/5/IA - We were discussing what would be a good number to challenge them to read. We had a HUGE variety of ideas.
JJ/2/NM - Janet, do you teach whole language???
Janet/Ar - yes I do Kat. I love this sesson. I have already learned some things. I will definately come back to these sessons. Bob have ya seen my website?
Bob R/CA - I think so, Janet. what's the URL?
Shelley/4/OK - JJ our principal was an icecream sundae! She had all the toppings placed on her head by the students who had met the reading challenge
Kathy/5/IA - Neat, Shelley! :0)
Janet/Ar - JJ, while in college we learned a lot on whole language. At that time it was the going thing in schools.
Kat/Kathleen - Bob, do you remember any intersting summer reading incentives from your school days?
JJ/2/NM - Did it work Shelley??? The reading challenge I mean!
fifth-g-teach - We had a student /teacher softball game.
Bob R/CA - Hmmm, we didn't do the prinicpal thing. I recall bookathons, but that's not really an incentive, is it?
Kat/Kathleen - fifth , that's sounds like fun..different from the usual
Kat/Kathleen - Bob, anything that promotes reading activities
fifth-g-teach - Bookathon?
Kathy/5/IA - Our area Baseball team (minor league) use to have a summer reading challenge...they are doing it this year. :0(
Shelley/4/OK - Yep! The principal was really "quite a treat" when the kids were done with her!
Bob R/CA - (readathon?)
Janet/Ar - Bob the url is http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/5146/ Please visit and sign guestbook and let me know honestly what ya think!
Janet/Ar - Readathons sound like a lot of fun for students.
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, you were asking about rewarding summer readers by doing something crazy to the principal, I've heard of that..kiss a pig, dunking booth, silly antics, etc. have you done it?
Bob R/CA - Janet, I've been and have signed the book, I remember your rolling kitty. :o)
Janet/Ar - Kat, we have done that here and the students love it. yes Bob I have a rolling Kitty. I done a lot to it over the past couple of weeks.
Kathy/5/IA - fifth...I'm thinking of maybe giving my new fifth graders a calendar for the summer like you suggested earlier. 20 min. a day for 20 days a month...could even be a little more in the summer, right?
JJ/2/NM - No Kat, but it would be fun!
Kat/Kathleen - Our principla asks kids to send postcards to the school all summer (writing for reading, right?) In Sept the cards are displayed in the hallway. Then he hands out pencils or something to those who sent cards
Bob R/CA - well, I'm not sure how much incentive a readathon gives all students. Those motivated towards charity, or to winning might, but the rest...?
Kathy/5/IA - That's neat, Kat...I was going to have my kids write me over the summer about what they are reading.
REI/2/IL - We have started a District Summer Children's Theater program. Many of our Title 1 students are involved. This year, we have had such a large # of participants that we have had to double cast! We are putting on the Musical "ANNIE"
fifth-g-teach - More would be great..I put important days on the calendar too.
Janet/Ar - Students here write letters to our newpaper. It is usually about something going on at their school.
Kathy/5/IA - Like special Holidays, fifth?
Kat/Kathleen - Tell PJ and me more about the calendar to motivate kids to read in the summer..I missed that
JJ/2/NM - Any suggestions for getting kids to read over the summer when there aren't many books at home???
Kathy/5/IA - Fifth, could you explain your calendar idea.
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, they write to the local paper or the school paper??
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, the public library connection would help in that case
fifth-g-teach - Yes. I like the postcard idea!!! Maybe put ed. websites on the calendar. Many of my kids are online or go to the libraary
Janet/Ar - I am talking about private message. The local paper Kat! They really feel important when they do that. Once a week they have 2 pages devoted to school life.
Kathy/5/IA - I'm thinking of pulling a few books for some of my kids who will go to Mexico this summer. (from my own collection) I'm sure no one will take them to a library.
JJ/2/NM - Kat, public library is 30 miles away!
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, that's a good idea to get the local newspaper involed that way
Shelley/4/OK - Found the site for AR reading program: http://www.advlearn.com/
Kat/Kathleen - websites on the calendar is a good idea
REI/2/IL - To get books to our kids without any, our community has established the "BOOK ANGEL" program
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, that won't work then..how about a grant for a summer lending library?
fifth-g-teach - I use a reading calendar to record reading minutes or books. Parents sign it with minutes read and pages and book title. 20 monutes/night for 20 days for my fifth graders.
Kat/Kathleen - Or, JJ have a book swap before school gets out, kids bring their already read books in and swap for "new" ones brought by other kids
Kathy/5/IA - Websites on the calendar...is good. Not many of my kids have the internet, but some do.
Kat/Kathleen - REI, how does Book angel work?
Janet/Ar - Some of the schools have terrific kid program where a teacher picks a student of the week and they are announced at an assembly . They get prizes and a T-shirt.
JJ/2/NM - Kat, do you know of any grants??? Rei what is Book Angel?
Kathy/5/IA - What age level of ESL do you have, liz?
JJ/2/NM - The book swap sounds good :0)
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, I would seek a local grant, don't know of any national ones off the top of my head, I'll try to look for some (remind me via e-mail,ok?)
lizbeth/NC/ESL - I have k-5 grades.
Bob R/CA - PJ got the grey screen. IF THAT HAPPENS TO ANYONE, TRY HITTING THE "REFRESH" BUTTON ON THE LEFT FRAME
Kat/Kathleen - PJ is having problems..another aol user :-(
fifth-g-teach - In NC? I'm in Newton, NC.
Kat/Kathleen - To get to the refresh button, you might have to scroll
Kathy/5/IA - Yes, I like the book swap idea! I think I'll try that next week!!!!! Could they get a ticket for each book they bring in, and then get to exchange a ticket for a book?
lizbeth/NC/ESL - I'm in Randleman.
Kat/Kathleen - Yes, Kathy, tckets or phony money..that way you keep track of how many books each child can take
Shelley/4/OK - Someone asked for the internet site for the AR and STAR program earlier. Did they get the site url I put on?
JJ/2/NM - Great idea Kathy!
Kathy/5/IA - GREAT...I have an idea for one day next week...BOOK SWAP!
Bob R/CA - [if you get a stuck screen, you can also right-click on the message window (on the right) and select "reload frame"]
REI/2/IL - Book Angels are local businesses or organizations that designate money to be spent on low-income or special ed. children to purchase books at our school book fair.
Janet/Ar - Shelley I did and plan on looking at them soon. I am learning a lot tonight.
Kat/Kathleen - I missed the explanation of book angels, but we have Book Buddies..community members buy and inscribe hardcover book for each child to keep
Kathy/5/IA - I like the Book Angel idea....that would be neat to look into!
Shelley/4/OK - OK I was hoping you got it
Janet/Ar - I missed the info about Book Swap. Please repeat.
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, you could use something similar to Book angels..similar to a grant..
lizbeth/NC/ESL - Our local frozen yogurt store gives out "edible" bookmarks. They can be used for bookmarks until they read 6 books and then they can trade it in for a free waffle cone.
JJ/2/NM - Yeah! I have some great ideas for encouraging reading!!!
Kathy/5/IA - (IF...I would of won the 175 Million last night...I would of been a book angel for tons of kids!)
Kat/Kathleen - Lizbeth, that's a great way to tap local resources, could be adapted to many businesses
Janet/Ar - Lizbeth that sounds like a really good incentive for them to read!
REI/2/IL - Our Title 1 department makes sure that we have a huge 1/2 price bookfair the last two weeks of school. Each Book Angel child could spend $7.50. That is a lot of 1/2 priced books!!!!
Shelley/4/OK - Amen did they find the winner yet?
Aussie - G'Day all, dont usually get a chance to join the conferences,I am sneaking in now during class
REI/2/IL - Yea...they are from IL!
Kat/Kathleen - REI, that's great....books kids can afford, and with money provided by community :-)
lizbeth/NC/ESL - I used that with my ESL summer school students. The yogurt store is beside Walmart and everybody in Asheboro goes to Walmart.
Shelley/4/OK - What class are you "suppose" to be in Aussie
Kathy/5/IA - Kids could bring in books they want to swap. For each book they bring inthey would get a ticket (or play money) then they could exchange a ticket for a book.
fifth-g-teach - We have Birthday Books. Parent buys a book in honor of their child. It's placed in the library. Once a year we have a birthday party for the donors and they read the book first. Special plate in the frount with their name.
Aussie - My grade 6's are taking peer support with grade 3.I'm just here in case
JJ/2/NM - I was just thinking, I got a lot of garage sale books a couple weeks ago, maybe I'll give them to the students!
REI/2/IL - It has been a great way to get books into some of our homes. The best part is that the kids are starting to look for AR books or books by authors we have studied during the year.
Shelley/4/OK - What kind of book titles do you use to teach your 6th graders in reading Aussie
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, use them for a lending library, more mileage
Kathy/5/IA - I hit book sales all over! :0)
Aussie - We use all sorts here.at the moment they are reading "A wrinkle in time"
JJ/2/NM - True Kat, at least one of us is thinking!!
Janet/Ar - I have collected a huge box of books from yard sales for whenever I do get my own classroom.
Shelley/4/OK - REI I had several students read over 100 pts this year in the AR and 1 had 225 pts!
Janet/Ar - Aussie I love that book!
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, you will be prepared..it will happen! :-)
Kathy/5/IA - You are really getting prepared, Janet!
Aussie - I use a lot of Paul Jennings and John Marsden. They are very popular with the kids.Do you have Paul Jennings available there?
Shelley/4/OK - I will be teaching the highest reading level next year and they range from 5.5 to 9.1 in reading levels. Would this book be ok for that range?
Janet/Ar - I sure saved a lot of money that way. I hope to have my own class library where students can check them out but not to take home just to have at desk.
Shelley/4/OK - What are some of their book titles?
REI/2/IL - Cool! The special ed. kids in my class keep telling me they have reading fever
Kat/Kathleen - I'm not familiar with Paul Jennings, but he must write for older children
Aussie - Unreal, Unbelievable, Cabbage Patch Kid
Shelley/4/OK - It has been amazing to see them read like they do!
Kathy/5/IA - I let my students take my books home. I really don't have many "disappear" and if they do, I always figure...they might just be reading it again!
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, you would be afraid you wouldn't get the books back if you let them go home?
Janet/Ar - I have a shed full of things for my own classroom. I am in need of a couple of bean bag chairs and a small rocker.
JJ/2/NM - Janet, I have had students check out books from my own library for 3 years now and have only lost 5 books! Kids are pretty responsible ;0)
Aussie - Kat he is an Australian author who writes for ages 7-14. Very funny stories often with a twist
REI/2/IL - Has anyone had a children's author or illustrator come to their school? Great reading motivator. 8-)
JJ/2/NM - I even had a student return a book they borrowed last year!
Janet/Ar - I know Kat that is why they can check them out but they stay in the classroom at their desk until they are to turn it in.
Shelley/4/OK - Aussie what are some of the titles of his books?
Kat/Kathleen - Aussie, the children must enjoy reading books by Paul Jennings then
Kathy/5/IA - I put library pocket in all my books with a note card with the title. I also have my name in all my books.
Janet/Ar - JJ that is nice to know.
Aussie - We have an authors day once a year when a local author comes and talks to the kids
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, I've had good luck letting the kids sign books out to take home..lost very few
Kat/Kathleen - Remeber, we have an author coming here tomorow night! Joan Holub :-)
Aussie - The best Paul Jennings is Round The Twist. See if you can find a copy. You will LOL all day long.My peer supporters are finished, I'll have to go, See ya
fifth-g-teach - We have authors day where the children get in cross grade level groups and read what they wrote.
Janet/Ar - I have already done that to most of my books. I have all reading level type books. I will try it and see how responsible my classroom is.
Kathy/5/IA - That will be so neat to chat with Joan!
Kat/Kathleen - classroom lending libraries could be "run" by the students..a good activity actually and they would love it
Janet/Ar - I like Joan Holub's books but I also like Jan Brett.
Shelley/4/OK - What are some activities ya'll do after finishing a book?
Kat/Kathleen - Letting kids know about summer author appearances (where available) would be a good incentive for summer reading
Kathy/5/IA - Well, lets see...any more great summer reading incentives?????
Janet/Ar - That is a great idea Kat put the responsiblity on the class that way . Students do not like it when some of them do not go by the rules that are set for something they are responsible for.
REI/2/IL - We bring in a children's author or illustrator for our community Literacy Fair. We just happen to work it out so they can be in our school the day before.
Kat/Kathleen - REI, is that done during the summer?
Shelley/4/OK - REI are you in a large school district
Kathy/5/IA - I'm thinking of having my class do something to "recommend" titles to each other next week, so the kids could have some ideas on what to look for in the summer.
Janet/Ar - Shelley, having a play, discussion about book and how it could have been different, having a puppet show.
REI/2/IL - Our Lit. Fair is usually in Feb. We run the district children's theater during the summer.
JJ/2/NM - Good idea Kathy, maybe we could brainstorm list of authors or books for the students to look for this summer.
Shelley/4/OK - When are your schools out?
REI/2/IL - No, we aren't a large district. We just happen to have a dynamo of a Title 1 director and an amazing Asst. Superintendant.
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, I've tried to get Jan Brett, she is booked solid, but I will keep trying!
Shelley/4/OK - Is it expensive to have authors come in?
Janet/Ar - Thanks Kat, I have wanted to write a children's book and my sister is very good in art so I wanted her to illustrate.
REI/2/IL - It can be. It is helpful if you piggyback with other school districts or community libraries.
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, you could ask you Title I person to look into a summer reading grant for you (might be for next year though) or maybe there is money left over from this year that could be put into summer reading materials
JJ/2/NM - How difficult is it to get a popular author???
Janet/Ar - Kat what is your e-mail address?
Kat/Kathleen - kat@teachers.net
Shelley/4/OK - What happened to the Book Talk info that was posted last month
REI/2/IL - Depends...you need to plan ahead. We usually book our authors 2-3 years in advance.
Shelley/4/OK - I think they discussed "The Giver"
Shelley/4/OK - KJ what grade do you teach
Janet/Ar - Does anyone use author's chair
REI/2/IL - Do you have a state reading conference? We do a lot of our "MAJOR" author networking there.
Kat/Kathleen - I can't get Eric Carle or Jan Brett but many are willing and helpful..we have the author of the Molly books coming
JJ/2/NM - Janet, my kids love author's chair!! They feel so special when they share their books!
Janet/Ar - Joe Bonsall? Kat?
Kathy/5/IA - You are really working hard on getting authors, Kat! Thanks!!!
KJ/IL - I just finished working with 2nd grade, & now I'm an aid in a 5th/6th grade class
Shelley/4/OK - See ya'll nite Happy Reading!
Janet/Ar - JJ I think that they are very special to use. The students love it and they get a kick out of it.
Kat/Kathleen - Shelley, wait!!!!!!
Shelley/4/OK - Yes???
JJ/2/NM - Janet, just seeing their faces when they share is priceless!!!!!!!!
Kat/Kathleen - Shelley, the Book TAlk on The Giver is over on the left frame :archive"
Janet/Ar - Me too KJ!!! Join the crowd but I'm definately not giving up.
Shelley/4/OK - Kat my son is breathing down my neck to take him to a friends house. Thank you for the archive info!!! =-)
KJ/IL - I agree Janet
Janet/Ar - Kat, do you mean Joe Bonsall
Kat/Kathleen - Yes, Janet, Joe Bonsall has agreed to come for a chat like this
Janet/Ar - I love Joe Bonsall. the OAK RIDGE BOY!!! I have met Joe Bonsall in Branson, MO.
Bob R/CA - Kat, he said he'd come?
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, then watch for the date and you can talk to him again!
JJ/2/NM - What are some of his books??
Janet/Ar - Kat the is way tooo cool!!!
Kat/Kathleen - Oh, Bob, you are there? Yes, he will come :-)
Janet/Ar - I am having problems locating the Molly Books.
Kat/Kathleen - His newest book is The Home or just Home??? Before that 2 Molly cooks about a cat, janet, doyou have the titles available?
Kat/Kathleen - janet, wait, Bob can tell you how to get the Molly books...Bob?
Kat/Kathleen - Buy your Molly books through teachers.net link..it will help the site
Janet/Ar - No Kat I don't and want to collect them. While in Branson at a Oak Ridge Boys concert he mentioned his Molly books.
JJ/2/NM - In the catalog Kat????
Janet/Ar - Thanks Kat will do!
Kat/Kathleen - paging BOB!!:-)
Kathy/5/IA - I'm not familiar with the Molly Books. What age level?
Kat/Kathleen - I saw a link in the mailring..hold on, we'll get it..
Janet/Ar - KJ I graduated in May of 95 but was close to getting my retirement from the hospital where I am presently working. But now I am ready to retire from there for bigger and better things teaching.
Kat/Kathleen - I haven't seen the Molly books, I think young elem level maybe..
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, e-mail me and I'll get back to you with the link, and Janet too
Janet/Ar - Ok Kat will do.
Kat/Kathleen - Bob, are you there?
JJ/2/NM - Thanks again Kat!!
Kathy/5/IA - I hate to skip out on you all, but I need to make a phone call. Thanks to all of you for coming tonight and sharing your ideas so freely with other teachers. That's what makes this such a great place!
Bob R/CA - I'm on the phone and in two chatrooms...
Kat/Kathleen - Thanks, Kathy!!!
Janet/Ar - Kat you are sooooo very helpful and knowledgeable!!!
Kathy/5/IA - My Bob...you are busy!!!

KJ/IL - She's great..she e-mailed me awhile back, (I have a pen pal/craft newsletter for kids) and she wanted me to mention her in it...
Kat/Kathleen - Janet, you would have to check it out..I haven't had time to investigate it..you can sign up to be notified within minutes of when a job is posted in the region you designate
Janet/Ar - It is getting to where it is gonna be scarey to be a junior or senior high teacher.
KJ/IL - Janet, there's really not a lot listed for Il. but I check it often
Kat/Kathleen - KJ< then come and say hello to Joan. Your newsletter sounds interesting
Janet/Ar - JJ, about a year ago I would have relocated but had to move mother in law in with us and can relocate. BUMMER!!! She is 81 years old.
KJ/IL - I started it when I was younger & it's a fun hobby..I have kids who receieve it all over the US :)
Kat/Kathleen - KJ, do they pay to subscribe?
Kat/Kathleen - KJ, is it an online newsletter?
KJ/IL - yes, it's $10 for the year, and it is a monthly newsletter..(plus they get small prizes with each newsletter)
Janet/Ar - I will sign up and see what happens.
KJ/IL - Kat, most definitely!!! It's usually $1, but for anyone on here, I'll send a complimentary issue :)
Janet/Ar - KJ I would love to hear more about the newsletter. Please e-mail me at nsjz36b@prodigy.com with some info.

Addie k/mo - my school is out too!
Janet/Ar - tomorrow is the last day here.
Addie k/mo - we had our last teacher workday today. my coworker across the hall retired. they "roasted" her at our luncheon meeting. it was hilarious!

Janet/Ar - Sounds like fun Addie!!! :)
