Mary/PA - Welcome to this evening's Reading Recovery Meeting here at Teachers.Net. Tonight's topic is "Taking Words Apart During Reading."
Doug - Mary- shall we start discussing the use of magnetic letters, the little white board...where shall we start?
Mary/PA - Anywhere you want, Doug
Kdg teacher - sure
Doug - I like to show something and then check it against the text
Mary/PA - When I first start to teach kids about taking words apart during reading, I start with the mag. letters - it links to what they have been doing in M&B
Mary/PA - Doug, do you do this if the child has said a word that doesn't look right and notices, but doesn't know what to do?
Doug - my favorite is a simple analogy...I write two known words then the new word....suddenly they see it and read it
Mary/PA - Or do you do it when the child didn't notice?
Mary/PA - Do you do this when the child is stuck and doesn't know how to move on?
Doug - mary- I usually do it after meaning didn't work but they notice something
Mary/PA - What do they notice? Just M or do they notice some V as well?
Doug - I was reminded to cut my sentence apart so i can echo what i m doing with TAWR with
Mary/PA - Others, just jump in with your ideas, don't be shy
bliss - m? v?
Mary/PA - bliss, in Reading Recovery, M=Meaning, V=Visual which for none RR teachers is the "phonics" kind of things
Doug - mary- it depends on the situation...it usually comes up in the new book
Mary/PA - That's the easiest way to explain it
bliss - thanks...i'm a new sped teacher, not familiar with rr, but willing to learn.
Mary/PA - Yes Doug, the CUS is a good place to reinforce the TWAR
Mary/PA - Do you ever do a TWAR as a teaching point? Or is it then a M&B?
Doug - mary- do you find it very time consuming to teach endings with magnetic letters.....play plays playing.....that white board is becoming more and more my friend
sal - This M & B thing has always been a difficulty for me..........
Doug - mary- with The Bus Ride, level 4... then they all went fast
sal - it's just so unstructured I guess.......some days I feel I'm making a point and other times it feels useless. I like the white board too!
Mary/PA - Doug, I use Mag letters for anything new, after the child has had the manipulation experience, I move to white board or paper - when I use paper, I put it in their pouch with their take home books and it is a reminder to them about what they did in their lesson that day
Doug - looking at then and they is great example
Mary/PA - Doug, do you do this because the child can't come up with something to say for the "then"?
Mary/PA - sal, I feel that M&B is laying the ground work for understanding TWAR
Mary/PA - It makes sense when you link it to what is needed in the lessons
Doug - mary- I usually leave omissions alone but if they go from then to they to them....i need to show them the ending with a little masking
Mary/PA - sal asks if you teach that ey says a - I know that I don't, I do teach the kids that many letters don't always say what you might think they would and that when reading we have to ALWAYS think of what makes sense
Doug - mary bohenlin a TL from california has a nice handout at anihome.com and there is a good sequence for teaching TAWR....i don't have the url offhand hut it is the california rr site out of Cal state san bernardino
Mary/PA - In the words that start like "the" it is good to teach the child how to see the "the" Part and then GYMR and think of S
Doug - at http://www.stanswartz.com there is a link to the california site...sorry about not having the url
Mary/PA - Yes Doug, I know what you are referring to - http://www.amihome.com/rrca/rrcarefer.htm
Gigi/MO - I always try to associate th words to the also!!
Doug - mary- I like to say stick your tongue out at me
sal - speech therapists refer to the "th" sound as the "stick out your tongue" sound.......
Doug - gigi- earlier we were starting to talk about economizing time with TAWR and I confessed that with me it usually comes up in the new book....I tend to get too busy with other matters in familiar reading
Gigi/MO - I'm seeing that I need to teach more chunks because one of my boys is trying to "sound out" every sound in many words
Doug - gigi- yes clay is quite clear about teaching the largest versus the smallest
sal - when you are talking about a word like "they" to a child, does anyone ever discuss the fact that in this word "ey" is saying the "a" sound? Sometimes I feel that we RR teachers shortchange our children of important sound information
Mary/PA - Gigi, yes, teach him to see chunks and not read letter by letter - where do they get that!
Doug - sal- I understand what you are saying..during my training year I learned that when looking at the grapho phonemic cueing system that visual differences is usually the way we approach it...any other ideas out there?
sal - they get that from parents that teach them to sound it out, I th ink
Gigi/MO - Mary--I don't know but some kids do it to the extreme and others you wish would try it a little more!?!
Doug - sal- they also get it from educators who think that reading is word perfect reading....its the processing its the processing its the processing
Gigi/MO - Doug--That's one BIG thing that I heard at the Texas conference!! Process not accuracy and teach strategies NOT items!!
Mary/PA - Gigi - that's right!
Doug - gigi- did you get to hear betsy ilgenfritz...she just moved to texas...she is very good and filled with ideas
Mary/PA - When you start TWAR do you use chunks of sentence strips to mask the word chunks?
Mary/PA - If so, how long do you have them use the strips before using fingers or thumbs to mask?
Mary/PA - Or do you just start with fingers or thumbs?
Doug - mary- i should and the gb asks us to but its just so easy to just use a finger
Gigi/MO - I think I often get too tied up in items!! I heard Tammy Younts from Purdue 2 times!! I always try to hear her when I can and I heard Janet Farmer-Hayley who was trained in New Zealand by Barbara Watson in a Fri. night class by herself!!
Mary/PA - I use the the paper masks first - it's easier for me to see how accurate the child is in his masking - after I know he knows how to do it, we switch the fingers or thumbs, whatever works best for each child
Gigi/MO - I heard Jan 2 times also and then I also went to Blair Zofed(?) and they were all VERY good!!
Doug - Mary- are you going to the international conference this July in Canada....I read that Barry is going to speak up about the level 2 to 3 read aloud thing....?
Doug - gigi- did you write your notes on html?
Mary/PA - Doug, I hadn't even heard about it, it does sound interesting - where exactly is it and where can I find more about it?
Mary/PA - Is it just for TLs?
Gigi/MO - Doug--I don't know how to do that or what that means? I thought about typing thoughts and ideas out on Word but I haven't done it yet!!
Doug - http://www.readingrecovery.org the international conference I believe will be in Victoria BC...not just TL's just schools with money LOL
Doug - gigi- sometimes you can write a text on word highlight it and change it to html language and then you can send it on a site such as the remedial reading chatboard
Doug - mary- you would love Victoria ...one of the prettiest cities I have ever seen
Gigi/MO - Doug--Sounds like a great idea but too advanced for me!!
Mary/PA - Gigi, to add your notes to the RR Chatboard you don't need to write it in html, you can just copy and paste it in the message
Doug - gigi- sorry...mary knows her way with computers much better.....i would love to read your notes
Mary/PA - Any other thoughts about Taking Words Apart During Reading?
Gigi/MO - I also got to hear Candy Dawson-Boyd!! She was very entertaining, informative, insightful, and inspiring!!
Doug - mary- if you want I can ask a friend for more info for the international conference
Gigi/MO - I think maybe I could do the chatboard but I didn't even know that there was one for RR!!
Doug - let me know
Gigi/MO - I don't feel very confident in TWAR!!
Gigi/MO - I'm not very good at recording it either!!
Mary/PA - Here is the address for the RR ChatBoard - http://www.teachers.net/mentors/remedial_reading
Mary/PA - When I record what we do for TWAR - I just write the word and use slash marks to indicate how we took it apart and any notes about what the child noticed or didn't notice
Gigi/MO - When a child uses the first sound in a familiar book, is that TWAR?
Mary/PA - I find TWAR easier than M&B - it's easier for me to react to an immediate need rather than try to plan something meaningful - know what I mean?
Gigi/MO - Sometimes I write h--hamburger in that column!!
Mary/PA - Not really, that's "getting your mouth ready"
Mary/PA - Taking Words Apart is applied Making and Breaking
Gigi/MO - I think I try to respond to too many immediate needs!! I also heard in Dallas that there will be another day to teach things and to only teach 1-2 things per day!!
Mary/PA - Like is the child knows car or are and needs to read bark or start - you can show him how to get to the new word by noticing something that looks like a word or a part of a word he knows
Mary/PA - Yes, we are always cautioned to stick to our focus and not try to tackle everything in every lesson
Gigi/MO - Thanks, that makes sense!! Do you do that with mag letters during M&B or on the small white board during their reading?
Mary/PA - When you do M&B you should keep telling the child that he should do this while reading so that he makes the connection to why you are having break and make those words
Gigi/MO - You have been very helpful!! Thanks!! Are you a TL?
Mary/PA - I always use mag letters for M&B - by the time we get to that point in the lesson the child needs to get up and do some moving - I seem to always get the antsy kids
Mary/PA - No, I'm not a TL - just a kinder teacher in the AM and RR in the PM
Gigi/MO - But do you do the car/are/start thing in M&B or in reading where they can use it on the run? Hello, Maureen!!
Mary/PA - I usually have done it in M&B first and then pick a book for the next day that will lend itself to that chuck during reading
Gigi/MO - OK, Thanks!!
Maureen - I have been trying to use M&B in that way too, Mary. Also linking to writing.
Mary/PA - But if a child notices something before We've done it in M&B - I sure don't stop him from using it
Maureen - So true, Mary. Sometimes you can build on what kids notice too.
Mary/PA - The connection is really bad tonight
Mary/PA - Some kids start to see the links sooner than others - some need a lot more direct instruction in looking for those links
Maureen - There is some good info on TWAR that you can download from the RRCNA site, Gigi.
Gigi/MO - OK, Thanks, Maureen!!
Mary/PA - Maureen, what time is it for you right now?
Mary/PA - Are you in NZ?
Maureen - And some need lots of repetitions before they start to make links for themselves. I try to remember that my aim is to teach "How to..."
Maureen - Yes, I am in New Zealand. It is 4.15pm Tuesday here.
Mary/PA - The item knowledge they can teach to themselves after they finally learn the "how to"
Gigi/MO - That is a good motto, Maureen!!
Mary/PA - It's 10:15 PM Monday for me, and I have to get going - bed time is fast approaching
Mary/PA - Thanks for coming this evening/afternoon - I hope that I see you both next time
Mary/PA - Good Night
Maureen - It always seems a little strange to chat with people who are in a different time zone, doesn't it?
Gigi/MO - It is 9:15 pm Monday here in MO!! Bye, Mary!! Thanks for keeping this going!! Sorry I haven't been in here for awhile!!
Maureen - Goodnight, Mary
Gigi/MO - I was REALLY tired today so i better get going too so I can go to bed earlier!!
Gigi/MO - I do enjoy coming in here and chatting with other RR teachers, though!!
Maureen - OK. Nice chatting to you. We have nearly finished for the year here. Two weeks till Summer break. I hope that I'll be able to come to more meetings then.
Grace - Just found the site. First time. Am I too late?
Maureen - Hello Grace
Grace - Maureen are you a reading recovery teacher
Grace - I am a resource teacher
Gigi/MO - Hey, Grace!! The meeting was really from 9:00-10:00 EST but we're just hanging around!! I think they do this every month!!
Maureen - The meeting usually ends about now, Grace, but the room is still open if you have a question.
Grace - I just wanted to know the best resource I could use to level books
Grace - Is Ohio state the "king" of reading recovery
Maureen - Yes I am a Reading Recovery Teacher, Grace. Try Fountas and Pinnell.
Maureen - RR was introduced in the US through Columbus, Ohio.
Gigi/MO - Guided Reading by Pinnell and Fountas is good!! They also have other books--Matching Books and Readers (?something like that) and they also have a new one out!!
Grace - I just ordered a Fountas and Pinnell book from Barnes and Noble. I guess I'll just have to wait. Thanks
Gigi/MO - Many of the book companies also have lists of their books that are leveled also!!
Grace - I am finding it very hard to level books. I've had no training
Grace - Part of my job this year is to level books.
Gigi/MO - Start with books that are already leveled and then compare other books to those!!
Gigi/MO - It's very hard for me to tell levels also but if I can compare them to some that are already leveled, that makes it easier!!
Grace - Thanks. I'm really slow at it. I feel like the teachers are waiting for all these new books.
Gigi/MO - Can they help you?
Gigi/MO - We have cabinets of leveled books but we worked on them together!!
Grace - Good Idea. They probably have a better idea of the levels closest to their grade level
Grace - Wow cabinets. sounds like your school has a lot.
Maureen - Grace, there's an online list of leveled books at http://www.beavton.k12or.us.htm
Gigi/MO - In those books, you just look up the title and it gives you the level!! Then we labeled them as a team also!!
Maureen - That's how we leveled our bookrooms too, Gigi. The whole staff got together and it was a team effort.
Gigi/MO - We have a cabinet for K, one for 1st, and one for 2nd!!
Grace - I also have many books in Spanish to level. We are a Spanish Immersion school
Grace - Thanks for the www. list. I'll try it
Grace - Thanks. I'll try to log on earlier next week. I know it's late for some
Maureen - The levels will probably correspond, Grace. Most titles are translations of English texts. I know that the Rigby?PMs are like that.
Gigi/MO - Check the publishers!! I just got back from the RR conf in Dallas and many of the publishers had new leveled lists and some had Spanish books listed also!! Call them!! RR has a Spanish part to it too!!
Maureen - Yes La Lectura Descumbriendo (spelling???)
Gigi/MO - Good job, Maureen!!
Gigi/MO - I wasn't going to attempt the name!!
Grace - Could I just request a copy of the spanish RR.
Gigi/MO - Probably but I think they might be in with the English lists!?!?
Grace - Are they free or do I have to pay for it?
Gigi/MO - They are generally free!! They were at the conference!! If you spent money buying books from companies, that is the least the can do to help you!!
Maureen - Is there an RR teacher at your school, Grace? Perhaps that would be helpful. I use the New Zealand levels list and publisher sites. Check out the RRCNA site ... the new US levels list is on there, so maybe there will be some ref to the Spanish titles list.
Gigi/MO - Most companies have 800 numbers!!
Maureen - And many have leveled list on their websites.
Grace - No, no RR teacher. This is my first year at this school as recourse teacher.
Grace - So... part of my job is ordering and leveling books
Gigi/MO - Hope we've helped you!! It seems very overwhelming at first and especially if you are trying to do it alone!!
Grace - Thanks you both have helped. At least I know where to start.
Maureen - Publisher levels do not always correspond with RR Levels, but they are reasonable guide. Good luck! You have a big job.
Grace - I'm going to sign off for now. Hope to chat again soon. I'll come back for any questions that will come up.
Grace - Bye THANKS
Gigi/MO - Good luck leveling, Maureen and Good luck with your end of the year, Maureen!! We're close to half done with this year!! Bye!!
Maureen - Bye Grace.
Gigi/MO - OOPs, I meant Grace first instead of Maureen!
Maureen - OK, hope to see you here again, Grace. Bye for now.
Gigi/MO - Are you still at school, Maureen?
Maureen - And you, too Gigi LOL
Maureen - No I raced home from school to try to get to this meeting
Gigi/MO - Lots of good ideas here!! I need to go also!! Bye for now!!
Maureen - Teaching finishes at 3.00pm, but as usual, I got held up with teacher chat!
Maureen - OK ... see you here again in two weeks, I hope. Bye bye!
