spedly - What area of Special Ed. do you teach?
Mommay - I am a college student in Spec. Ed. Major...you??
spedly - I am a Learning Disabled teacher.
Mommay - How long have you taught? I am getting a late start - I am 41 years of age.
spedly - This is my 6th year. What area do want to teach?
Mommay - I've worked with Lifeskills and ED.
susan - hi everyone..my first time..also a resource teacher in an inclusive model

Mommay - I'm still trying to learn all the acronyms in Special Ed.!
susan - hi where are you both from> I'm from Montreal
spedly - I understand. What year of college are you? susan, How does the inclusive setting work?
Mommay - Do either of you belong to any professional organizations for Special Ed? If so, which ones?
susan - i've been in sp.ed for 25 years
Mommay - I'm classified a senior, but I have this semseter - one more of coursework and one of student teaching. I'm in Texas.
susan - i belong to LACLD..learning disabilities
Mommay - Susan, no burnout?! =o) How wonderful!
spedly - when I was in college I was a memeber of CEC. I wish I had kept my membership
susan - as opposed to pulling out children for remediation I do most of my work in the class...modifying the curriculum etc...
susan - hee hee..no burnout...but i've been lucky...have worked at all levels so never dull
spedly - Give me some info about LACLD... I am an resource LD teacher. I pull all my kids out.
Mommay - There are so many professional organizations, each Professor has his/her favorite, but I only have so much $$
susan - it is a great organizaiton...local chapters everywhere, newsletters.etc...
Mommay - What age are you (both) working with now?
spedly - susan, where are you from? Mommay pick the one that you think will suit your needs the best
spedly - I work with Elementary level K-5 grade
susan - from montreal .. i also work with same age group
Mommay - I have been in the Library checking out the journals this afternoon.
susan - do you pull out individually?
susan - there are some excellent journals on the net
spedly - I guess you and I have alot in common. I am from South Georgia. I have several students (8 is the most at one time) all at one time. Some are different grades and different subjects that I teach.
susan - you can ask your school to subscribe to journals
spedly - What are the names of some of those journals?
susan - i do mainly language arts and math..some motor skills
susan - The Reading Teacher - http://www.reading.org/publications/journals/RT, Educational Leadership - http://www.ascd.org , are the two that I really enjoy
spedly - Those sound very interesting. You can find alot of wonderful info for research papers in those journals. You probably already know that though, Mommay.
susan - i have a bookmarked site with a list of all the educational journals on the internet
spedly - Do either one of you know where I might find some info on the history of Valentine's Day? Could I get that sight from you susan?
Mommay - I have seen Reading Teacher and have done some on-line research.

Mommay - So many of my textbooks have web sites and it helps to look over the chapter outlines and questions.
Mommay - I have two semsters (this one included) of class work and will student teach in Spring 2002 - graduate in May 2002!

Mommay - I have 18 hours this semseter - due to ECE-4th AND Special Ed. Lots of theory courses this time - LOTS of reading!

susan - spedly, do you do i.e.p.s on a regular basis? are families always involved?
susan - Teachers Helping Teachers is another helpful site..especially for student teachers

spedly - jc- i just found that site this week and I love it too. susan, yes and most of my parents are very involved, i do have a few however that could care less.
Ran/TN - Yes, I know I am a member of CEC.

spedly - we are getting ready for annual reviews and i dread it. very long process and tiring.
jc - have anyone of you used the "bateman template" from her "better iep's book?" it's wonderful...so easy to use and measure

spedly - ran-I serve an alternative school class- for one period about two or three days a week. sometimes its like a zoo. Maybe sometime you can give some pointers so I can help the teacher there.

admin - have low incidence programs, severly handicapped and a smattering of other responsibilities

admin - same as a principal, with one spec ed site and a number of satellite classes on district schools
Ran/TN - I usually am the moderator and I believe that Susan has sorta stepped in when I could not make it.

susan - it's a great way to hook up with other educators and share
admin - there is one I use occasionally and have opened it during IEP meetings.. cant' remember the url but it is the National Organization of Rare Diseases - http://www.rarediseases.org
admin - I don't think they have kept the data base up too well, but it gives you a summary of any disease or syndrome that they have listed
admin - and they have over 300
susan - That doesn't sound very inclusive???
Ran/TN - Wow I could sure use that one with all the different psychological diagnois there are out there.
admin - you can look up Psych diagnosis somewhere also, I think including the DSM-4 diagnosis
admin - I'll bet if you looked up "DSM4" on google or infoseek, you would find something useful

Flash - Yes It's Ontario Canada
admin - Flash, depends on where you are in the US.. in California, the funding is finally coming up to a much better level but still not high enough
Ran/TN - It is never high enough.
susan - there's never enough money....i'm from montreal
admin - our federal govt was supposed to fund special ed to 40% of the needed costs when they mandated the services in 1976, but have only paid the states 7%
Flash - Anyone know of a great site to learn more about strategies for Asperger's teenagers?

admin - aspergers is all over the net.. look up aspergers and autism in any of the search engines
