Dave MontrealCan - Paulie whistler currently has a student with Tourette's she was telling me that she has ot be close to him quite a bit to be there ot put a hand on his shoulder to calm him sometimes is that what you needed to do with this child

Dave MontrealCan - Hello Colleen welcome
Paulie - hi Colleen
Bananas - hi Colleen
Dave MontrealCan - Colleen what grade do you teach welcome
Bananas - Dave, is there a structured topic tonight?
Paulie - why can't u make the grinning smilie in here? Tnet think this meeting room doesn't need any grining???????
Colleen - HI Dave
Colleen - I teach grades 9-12
Colleen - HI Paulie and Bananas
Dave MontrealCan - Bananas it is basically just free flow here my expertise is visual impairments but the topic is special ed in general so if someone asks a question I cannot answer there is usually someone else here who can it is very free flowing
Bananas - Thanks, Dave.
Dave MontrealCan - Colleen what types of special ed students have you had
Colleen - mostly students with specific LD...no visually impaired students
SpecEd - I teach interrelated K-6th grade mostly self contained. I tried to teach a Kinder child who was vision impaired.
Dave MontrealCan - Colleen did you find most of them a challenge did you fidn it a positive experience or somewhat negative
Bananas - same for me, colleen. I am with 4th - 6th graders. My recent experience with the visually impaired would be family members who choose not to see things to be put away. heehee
Dave MontrealCan - Speced how did that go was it a success?
Colleen - mostly positive Dave. Some bad apples in the bunch, but otherwise good
Dave MontrealCan - If anyone is interested in my resource mannual "integration A Rewarding Experience" email me at melanson@teachers.net for details
SpecEd - I have no training in vision impaired It was very difficult for both of us. He stayed only 2 months then went to a resid. school.
Greypilot - Dave, I have a nephew who is visually impaired and is about to turn 22. He is still living at home with his mom. What is the next step for him? It seems like he will live with his mom forever.
Colleen - my school district is facing big budget cuts, so I don't know if I will have a job in the fall
Bananas - I need to let my son have a chance at the computer, so i need to say good night.
Paulie - bye Bananas
Greypilot - Colleen, Come to Las Vegas, we have a big shortage of spec ed teachers.
Colleen - bye Bananas
Bananas - Colleen, I hope your job is there for you, or another good one becomes available. SpEd jobs teachers are needed in IL. NIght Colleen and Paulie.
SpecEd - Colleen: Boy, We sure need teachers!! Please come!!!!
Colleen - really Grey??? My husband would love that. WE used to live in CA....he loves Vegas
Colleen - thanks Bananas.......bye
Dave MontrealCan - Grey lol well i am going to be 36 yrs old here and yes (confess) I still live at home I am self employed but still do not make enough money to be out there on my own it is not easy as a sight impaired person you really have to land a good job to be able to be totally self sufficient what are his interests what would he like to work in
Colleen - where is that SpecEd? I am in MA
SpecEd - Colleen:Southern Georgia-beautiful weather!!
Colleen - I bet SpecEd. I have always wanted to go to Savannah.....don't know why, but I just have.
Dave MontrealCan - Colleen are you a member of the BTU?
Greypilot - It is a bigger problem than just visually impared. He also has some brain damage. He was in an accident when he was 8 years old. He got hit in front of his house by a speeding car.
Paulie - how sad Greypilot
Dave MontrealCan - Grey that is horrible I think it may be quite a challenge not impossible but a challenge for him to live totally on his own
Greypilot - I just don't know how to advise my sister as to what is the next step after special ed.
SpecEd - Everyone: Please come down South. We'd love to have you!!
Colleen - how terrible Grey
Colleen - No Dave
Paulie - but there are group homes where the "kids" learn a skill and soem even go out to work I see blind people riding the bus all the time here but then we do havae a school for the blind here
Paulie - hi Robin
Colleen - hi Robin
Dave MontrealCan - Hello Robin welcome
Robin - Hello to Paulie and Colleen and to all
SpecEd - Dave: The child with VI (Kinder) was so independant Always wanted to run away Very bright child!!
Dave MontrealCan - Grey has he expressed any interest in a certain type of work ?
Paulie - we also ahve a school for the deaf
Dave MontrealCan - SpecEd did you enjoy having him/her in your classroom?
Colleen - It was nice chatting with you all....goodnight
Dave MontrealCan - Night Colleen
Greypilot - At one time he wanted to learn a foreign language but I don't think he has the ability.
Robin - ttfn Colleen
Dave MontrealCan - Grey I know a gentleman who is blind who was hired by our federal government in Ottawa as a translator but he is blind and that is all could be a challenge for someone who has more difficulty than just blindness
SpecEd - Sometime I did. He was amazing!! However, sometimes he would scream to get what he wanted and I could not get him to stop (unless I gave in to him)
Dave MontrealCan - SpecEd what did he usually want ?
Greypilot - Paulie, are the group homes funded by the federal government?
Paulie - I am not sure but I think so
Dave MontrealCan - Once again my resource mannual is called "Integration A Rewarding Experience" for more info please email me at melanson@teachers.net
Paulie - BTW Dace u owe me a email hehehehehehehe
SpecEd - Oh, my undivided attention!! No, he needed much adult interaction and love. He didn't have a great home life.
Dave MontrealCan -lollolol Paulie I know
Paulie - I would check with your city about group homes Ususally they employ a housemom who doesn't live there but stays and helps cook and regulate stuff
Dave MontrealCan - SpecEd so how would you handle that situation when he needed that kind of attention?
Robin - I have a student who thrives on negative attention. In the begining of the year he was "Sooooo sick he need to go to the nurses office". I told him he could go visit the nuse "IF" he was well all day. It worked.
SpecEd - My para was a great grandmother type She helped out tremendously. She often played , read, or cuddled with him. I was really at a lost about what to do. I had much older student to teach too.
Robin - Now he is looking for neg attention to visit the new Vice Principal. We will start the same "IF" he is good he can vist the new VP.
Paulie - lol Robun good thinking
Dave MontrealCan - SpecEd did he ever move on ot higher grades or stayed in special ed
Dave MontrealCan - Robin hopefully VP will be as understandign as you are lol
Paulie - I meant Robin sorry I am havign major typo trouble
Paulie - sigh
Robin - I really live the VP and principal. I have the only self sontained class in the building and the district is "tough" so the work with methank God!!!
Dave MontrealCan - Robin what do you mean by tough district as in tough kids ?
Robin - Me to Paulie one would think I type with mittens on LOL
SpecEd - We are very rural. He was the only VI in our county. He stayed only about 2 months with us and then our SpEd director arranged with his grandparent for him to go to a VI resid. school. The last I heared, he was in 2nd grade and doing wonderfully!! He loves his school, his behavior has improved, and he is very bright!!
Dave MontrealCan - SpecEd I always went to regular school as a student it was the best thing that ever happened ot me
Greypilot - Dinner is calling, I gotta go. Thanks for the thoughts. I like the group home idea. I think I will look into it. By all.
Dave MontrealCan - Take care Grey thanks for dropping by
Robin - Small city , broken homes, low income ect. The staff told me come inas a drill Sgt and the students will listen to ya. Heeheheh. I just laughed at my self I looked silly and the kids have enough yelling at home they are doing well with me teating them as PEOPLE
SpecEd - I wonder if "my" student will be able to attend a public school. What would be needed for him to succeed in the public school?
Dave MontrealCan - It is 10 pm eastern I would like ot thank teachers net for allowing me to host this session again for more info on my resource mannual "integration A rewarding Experience" please email me at melanson@teachers.net
Robin - Thank you Dave
Paulie - thanks Dave night barely 7 here
