naneb - rowlf and crystal what do you teach? I teach middle school LD reading and language
rowlf - I teach special education grades 3-5
Rachel - Hey- I'm a midd school teacher, too, Naneb! I taught LD last year- now I'm teaching self-contained.
naneb - I taught self contained Life Skills for 7 years
rowlf - I taught middle school last year.
Rachel - That's what I'm teaching next year.... any ideas w/ how to find a computer-based lesson planner?
naneb - we all hav a lot in common
naneb - I use a table in Word
Rachel - Did you create it?
melissa - evening all
rowlf - last year I just typed up my lesson plans on the computer using a template I created on word.
naneb - Yes, It is just rows and columns for each subject and period of the day
Rachel - Sounds good! Was it hard to write in your planner, b/c every student works on diff skills?
naneb - When I did Life skills I used two different planbooks cuz I had so many different levels
naneb - Hi melissa
rowlf - what I did was that I included that in my lessons. Often I wrote students will work on individual goals and objectives, as specified on their IEPs with 80% accuracy.
Rachel - What do you mean? Like one per semester?
naneb - Hi wizzlewolf, long time
wizzlewolf - Hi all!
naneb - No, I used one for the morning and one for the afternoon
Rachel - Wow- was that hard to handle?
wizzlewolf - You can find oodles of lesson plan templates online.
Rachel - Got to go.
naneb - I had 15 students with 5 different reading groups and math groups it was crazy
rowlf - I wrote the objectives what each group was doing.
rowlf - I think I had like 10 pages each week of lesson plans.
naneb - Hi browser
Browser4400 - Hi, I am looking for a good book on goals and objectives and some sample ieps i can use not to copy but so Î can get I idea of the format
Browser4400 - anyone have any good ideas?
naneb - we use our state benchmarks and objectives, that would be a godd place to begin
rowlf - can you check your state ed website for sample IEPS ours have some there.
rowlf - or at least used to.
rowlf - I have objective banks
rowlf - I am in Georgia Browser
wizzlewolf - Browser, if you do a search you can find lots of IEP examples for goals and objectives.
wizzlewolf - If you go to www.google.com and type in IEP examples, you will get bunches of leads.
rowlf - I base mine on the benchmarks, unless the student is working on functional skills.
Browser4400 - I have tried and when i go to access them, I am unable to. Do you have any urls?
wizzlewolf - Put a plus sign between IEP and examples
Browser4400 - wizzlewolf, thank you8
wizzlewolf - I just did what I told you and I came up with lots of links and PDF files
naneb - http://interact.uoregon.edu/wrrc/trnfiles/PDFTransition/AppA.pdf
naneb - I did sample IEPs in google and found lots of links that is just one of many
naneb - we have new IEP software that is wonderful, It has all of the state benchmarks and objectives, LCCE curriculum and you can write your own
rowlf - does anyone have anything they want to discuss?
Alison/PA - naneb... you are on the 4 Blocks mailring, correct?
naneb - yes, I am Alison
rowlf - Nan, you use 4 blocks in a sped classroom.
naneb - I thought you were a guy too!!
rowlf - everyone thinks I am a GUY
naneb - yes I use 4 blocks to teach reading and language
Alison/PA - are you a dawg, rowlf?
naneb - it's the name
rowlf - YES
Alison/PA - ah.... male or femals dawg?
rowlf - I am thinking about using aspsects of it in my class.
rowlf - I did it last year.
rowlf - female dawg
Alison/PA - naneb... do you work in an inclusion setting or pull out?
naneb - I think 4 blocks is perfect for sped kids, it is a way to teach all different levels
naneb - pull out
rowlf - true
naneb - my kids are all included for science, social studies and electives and some for math
Alison/PA - My special ed teacher works in my classroom... we are a team.. she loved it and it was VERY effective with my identified students
naneb - what grade do you teach Alison?
Alison/PA - 3rd
naneb - I am at a middle school
naneb - we have 3 inclusion teachers, 1 self contained and then me
Alison/PA - rowlf.... isn't the dog on Sesame Street male?
rowlf - he is NOT on seesame street
rowlf - he is on the Muppet Show
Alison/PA - naneb.. have you read Reading with Meaning?
rowlf - that is a different dog.
Alison/PA - Sorry... I stand to be corrected again!
Alison/PA - ok.. but rowlf IS a male dog?
rowlf - Anyway, I don't think it matters the sex.
naneb - yes and Mosaic of Thought and Strategies That work
Alison/PA - no... but it IS why we assume you are male!
naneb - rowlf was one of my favorite Muppets
rowlf - he is MY favorite
naneb - I assumed that!!
Alison/PA - naneb.. Do you have certain reading mini-lessons you do to start off the year? I just began reading the book and am sooooo excited!
rowlf - along with Fozzie, Stadeler and Waldorf, Swedish Chef, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Mahna Mahna,
naneb - I am starting with a short study of metacognition and then schema
naneb - My first schema book is going to be The Relatives Came
Alison/PA - Debbie Miller used that as an example in her book, I remember
naneb - we are going to an alternate day block schedule so I will have 95 minutes every other day for language and for reading
rowlf - thanks for the chat. Good night
Alison/PA - Would you spend a week modeling and practicing on text to self connections?
naneb - I am teaching 4 classes of reading and one language
naneb - I will spend at least a month on connections and probably more, I am planning an author study to do author connections and text to text
naneb - I did some strategy instruction last year and the thing that was hardest was spending enough time for the kids to really internalize the strategy
Alison/PA - author study... such as Tomie de Paola... and compare commonalities of his stories?
naneb - Yes, last year I did Patricia Polacco becuase her books are about families and traditions and some are about being different so my kids can really identify with them
naneb - plus they aren't so easy that they are insulted by reading them
Alison/PA - gotcha!
naneb - are you on a member of the yahoo group?
Alison/PA - I was thinking of choosing a few books with similar themes... different authors to compare text to text?
naneb - we have a group that discusses Mosaic of Thought, Strategies that Work and Reading With Meaning
Alison/PA - No.... I "don't Yahoo!" lol
naneb - that would be good too
naneb - go to www.yahoogroups.com and search for mosaicteachers
Alison/PA - is it like this? or a mailring?
naneb - yes, and we have a website with lots of resources to help you get started
naneb - it is a mailring or you can read it at the website
Alison/PA - I'll check it out! thanks
naneb - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mosaicteachers/
naneb - that's the link to the page
Alison/PA - brb so I can bookmark it
Alison/PA - Thanks
naneb - it is a great group, Judy teaches 3rd and she has been teaching the strategies, her entire school does them
naneb - she is our resident expert
naneb - and Deb from debfourblocks is a member too
Alison/PA - I love to pick an area each year to improve my strategies... this year it will be reading comprehension
naneb - I did 4 blocks last year and had so much fun and my kids learned so much
naneb - it is the best way to teach
Alison/PA - I enjoy it too! ! I got other teachers started last year and it is a major influence as we plan our new curriculum!
naneb - I had all but one of my kids pass all of their regular classes most with B's
Alison/PA - that's a wonderful achievement!
