treebee - Hello? Is there a topic or will there be?
pw - yes, sp. ed, but I want info on teaching skills for dyslexic child
pw - I need some ideas about books, etc with techniques to use with a young child
treebee - Have you done a net search?
pw - Yes, but lots of expensive programs
pw - I need a resource book...one that is reliable
pw - I know it is important to try little tricks like wearing a band on your left hand for text orientation
pw - I am not used to this chat format...kind of slow
treebee - Thats a new one on me...the band thingy
pw - It helps them to begin on the left when writing their name or a known word
treebee - I don't teach LD (Learning Disabled)
treebee - I don't teach LD (Learning Disabled)
treebee - oops
pw - I have a 5 year old in my K class who has a grandmother with dyslexia...she appears to have a lot of reversal probs
pw - lol, me either...but have lots of challenges with K students
treebee - <---grandmother
pw - Where are you from? I teach in S. Missouri
treebee - Some libraries have literacy programs......
treebee - I live in Calif
pw - Ok, what is the <- - - ? lol
pw - yes, I have talked to a couple of librarians
treebee - That is an arrow pointing to me
pw - Nice to meet ya!
pw - I am not a grandmother, but will be someday
pw - I am 44, and have two grown sons...one is married
treebee - So you want to help grama
pw - I was hoping some of the sp. ed teachers might point me in the right direction
treebee - OOo yeah you are very close to grandmotherlyness
pw - Oh! Sorry. G'ma is dyslexic. She is worried that her grandchild is also.
treebee - What do the librarians say?
treebee - Ahhhhhh very smart grama!!!! What do you use for an assessment?
pw - They have a couple of programs that can be on loan for parents, but I am a teacher...and I plan to try and tutor the little girl 2x a week
treebee - for the chilod
pw - yes
pw - I am using observation and what little I know about signs of dyslexia in children
treebee - So you have assessed the child and found that she is indeed dyslexic?
pw - The research I have read says to begin as early as possible...that children will learn 10x faster than after age 7 when they have developed their own systems of compensating
treebee - There are lots of teachers on the chatboard page that can help
pw - I don't know that there is a definite test for a 6 year old. I have found a couple of tests online...139.00!
treebee - MOST of them teach LD and think that's all there is to sp ec
treebee -
treebee - sp ed
pw - Yes, I am just getting into teachers.net...good site
pw - I think I will do some more searching on another browser, then check back in here...talk to you in a few
naneb - Praline, did you get blown away?
Praline - No I am just fine.
naneb - I am on the MS coast and we had some wind and rain but not much
Maxie - Hey Everyone! What do you teach?
MAMA Maria - children
Praline - I teach 1st grade.
Maxie - Do you have a resource setting or self contained one
Isaac - Is anyone a reg. ed. inclusion teacher
Praline - I teach regular ed. 1st grade...self contained.
Isaac - I teach LA 6th grade with MH inclusion unit
Praline - I have a student who is n Sp. ed. for anguage Arts and with me for all other subjects.
Isaac - Praline, How do you create modified work
Praline - This is just the beginning of 1st grade ..math seems to be his strength so I do not really have to modify so far except to read the word problems to him..but at this time of the year you have to do that for almost eveyone.
Isaac - if he needs a special test will you create it or his se teacher
misa - Does anyone teach 5th grade?
Praline - Science and social studies is a lot of hands-on and discussion activities.
Praline - Last time I ha s4rd grade , with the same situation, the p. ed. teacher would read the test to the student,,especially in science and in social studies.
SundayMoon - i teach 3, 4, 5 emotional support
Isaac - I have 4 MH students at the same time with differnent needs
Isaac - i am expected to create different test for each based on need
SundayMoon - i have 9 kids with varying behavior and emotional disorders.....i am self contained
Praline - Isaac ..what kind of needs?
Isaac - i feel this is the caseworkers responsibility
Isaac - one is DH, one is bright with Asperger's, 2 behavior/reduced work, rewording
SundayMoon - do you have their IEPs?
Isaac - plus I have to make a test for the other 22 kids in my class
Isaac - caseworker has IEP's/we got pertinent info only
SundayMoon - oops, gotta run...hope to be back!
Praline - What do you mean by caseworker?
Isaac - that's what we call the se teacher's at our elementary school
Isaac - sorry about the apostrophe in teachers
pw - Hi to all! I am trying to get info on resources for teaching dyslexic children
Praline - I also have a child who has repeated K and he is doing great in Math and other subjects but not in language arts. He has not been evaluated yet.
Grace/IL - pw, do you want the URL for the International Dyslexia Association, programs to help, other?
pw - Any suggestions for teaching a young child directionality? Thought I'd pick a few brains here
Isaac - see if your community has a parent mentor group for dyslexic children
pw - I think I have that link
pw - no, we live in a small S. Missouri town
Grace/IL - Have you checked out www.resourceroom.net?
Isaac - our community has one. They did an inservice and they provided us with valuable information.
pw - I have researched signs or indicators for dyslexia...even if it is not, I want to help her get oriented as early as possible
pw - No, but I'll copy that link info, thanks!
pw - Wow, sounds so cool Isaac
Grace/IL - One of the first things to try with dyslexic children is multi-sensory instruction in letters and sounds. It seems to help a great deal.
Isaac - the brought in all types of actvities to show us how it feels to be dyslexic
Grace/IL - Having children write patterned words as you dictate them helps them develop phonemic awareness which is really essential in order for phonics instruction to work.
pw - Yes, I am using play-doh, sandpaper letters, arm band on left hand, tape on left side of work area
Grace/IL - Next week I'm going to the Illinois Branch of the International Dyslexia Association conference.
pw - Crazy server...kicked me off
pw - Wow, Grace!
pw - I am going to tutor this little 6 year-old twice a week after school
pw - She consistently reverses letters and numbers...immediately after I show her the correct orientation of them
pw - She begins her words, name, or other characters on the right side of the paper...writes her name backwards, etc
Grace/IL - pw, I'm a retired teacher. One of my goals was to teach in ways that helped prevent learning disabilities. Oooh, I just caught your last posts. Go to the Teachers.net/gazette and hunt for my articles on "Teaching Gayle to Read." I just finished a year of tutoring a first grader.
Grace/IL - She may be having a major problem with directionality.
pw - Wow! I am sooo glad I came tonight, thanks Grace
pw - Yes, I thought I'd approach it from the directionality angle and work on things to help improve dir.
Praline - we use Project Read .I have noticed that most of the children like the activities and benefit greatly from them but the one who are having trouble do not seem to want to do the skywriting, fingerspelling....
Grace/IL - You can also go to my website, http://www.spellangtree.org and you will find a direct link to the articles on the "About the Author" page.
pw - I have also read that you have to practice, for example, direction of letter "b" before introducing letter "d" together with b
pw - I'll do that, Grace. And thanks for your info as well Praline
Grace/IL - Praline, I had Project Read training. It's wonderful! I adapted some of that with other programs and used it for whole class instruction.
pw - Our Reading instruction is based on the Arkansas Literacy Model
pw - It is very much like 4 Blocks
pw - After teaching K for 8 years, and other grade levels for 10 years before that, I can appreciate the need for phonemic awareness and phonics instruction
Grace/IL - I have a set of multi-sensory letters that really help with the reversal problem. As the children write the letters, they have to say the sound that the letter represents. Tracing the letters on texture really helps.
pw - Yes, I have a yellow set--bumps on them...have used them with success
pw - I am trying to type here with a himalayan cat tail on my fingers...difficult, but possible
Grace/IL - pw, you're about at the stage of teaching (18 years) I was at when I finally discovered multi-sensory teaching and it made a real difference in my teaching.
pw - Hi Vic
Praline - Grage I teach phonics/ spelling combined using Project Read techniques but I have noticed that the two students who are really struggling are the ones who do not like to do the multisensory such as skywriting, fingerspelling..
pw - Yes, I have been using cross-lateral exercises with K for 5 years
pw - I use the Brain Gym activities to start my day
Grace/IL - Praline, can you get them to simply write the words with pencil?
candy - Is information regarding Project Read on the net somewhere?
pw - I have several types of writing tools on the tables...some prefer markers, some crayons, some pencils, etc
Grace/IL - Candy, yes. I think it's http://www.projectread.com. It may be lacking the www part.
Vic - Hi pw
candy - What is everyones take on Companion Reading?
pw - I think I'll go check out your websites. Thanks so much for the heads-up. Hi Vic! lol
Grace/IL - The link worked for Project Read.
Grace/IL - Candy, can you explain Companion Reading? It may be similar to some other techniques.
candy - companion reading is very much phonics based......learn sight words.......sounds......practice reading with partners......share sheets sent home so they read with parents, too
candy - It feels kind of dry......but our school uses it for the first grade reading program....it does seem to do the job
Praline - Grace, they only do waht I have them do when I work with them in a small group. When I work with the class..even if they are sitting really close to me..they just..look around unless I keep tapping their desk.
candy - I am interested in finding approaches that really do the job for the struggling student
Grace/IL - Candy, it sounds as though it's a program that might work. It involved repeated reading (in different contexts) which is very important for success.
Grace/IL - Praline, that's why I had the students write from teacher dictation with immediate feedback. It rather forces them to pay attention to the sounds. Of course, one sometimes doesn't see real results for several months but it does work.
hboggs - Hi all! would like some feedback on Orton Gillingham
Grace/IL - hboggs, you've come to the right place. I'm a real proponent of O-G
care_bear - What grade do you guys teach?
hboggs - Grace, where is the best place to get Orton Gillingham information
beans - ya i think companion reading does help
beans - and if u do itwith sonme body else u can play it as a game
Vic - I teach k-2 multicat.self-contained
hboggs - I teach elementary
beans - it makes it interesting for the children too
care_bear - I teach 18 month olds.
hboggs - learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities
Vic - How long do any of you wait for new meds to work?
Grace/IL - hboggs, go to the International Dyslexia Association site -- http://www.interdys.org -- We also just posted the site for Project Read which is based on O-g. Thats at http://www.projectread.com.
Grace/IL - I'm retired from first grade..
hboggs - Thanks! I will give that a try
care_bear - I'd love to be a kindergarten or first grade teacher or even a teacher's aide
beans - i am from india ...i would love to work here in Ca
nik - Okay, moved to jersey, looking for a job
beans - how is it here one to one basis or do u have group lessons
hboggs - Vic, try kids who are supposed to get meds and don't always get them
beans - in india there is very less special ed staff so its always group lessons even in special schools
care_bear - where did you move from nik?
nik - NYC
care_bear - Cool! How do you like Jersey so far?
nik - I need a car, Now...
Vic - hboggs, I've got those too. One particular one who doesn't get his meds is because his mother uses them instead. He went through last months 30 day supply in 17 days.
care_bear - I've never been there before but I always love hearing about new places.
nik - It's clean.
care_bear - Did you live right in downtown NY?
nik - How about you, care bear, where would you like to teach, in a private sector or in public school?
Vic - I have a little fella who was doing well in class. He was on Adderall and something else. 2 days ago, his doctor increased his Adderall. He's been completely OUT OF CONTROL ever since. He threat to kill the principal today, stuck his tongue out at us, spit, kicked, screamed bloody murder, etc. We called the mother in today and had her take him home. We also asked that she call his doctor. She said he isn't in until Tuesday.
care_bear - I'm not sure, I teach toddlers right now, so its not really officially school and I don't know what the real difference is?
nik - I lived in the bronx, but as an early interventionist and special education itinerant teacher, I travelled via public transportation in all the boroughs.
Vic - We even had to restrain him today, he was tearing the principal's office apart.
nik - you mean, in a day care setting?
care_bear - yeah
care_bear - but i'd rather work in a public daycare than a private one
care_bear - 18 month olds, they're so adorable
care_bear - most of the time
Vic - The mother insists that he be sent to a self-contained school for behavior disordered children. He has proven that on the right meds, he can function at our school. The mother thinks the other school is the answer, "where they can control his behavior." This is a 2nd grader. Any suggestions?
nik - Do they offer something like a P3 certificate in your statee?
care_bear - but if i ever went back to school to take my teaching i would like to teach kindergarten or grade one
care_bear - actually, i live in canada
nik - Toddlers are a lot of fun. I worked with three year olds last yer, also worked with autistic twins.
care_bear - i just know theres a teaching certificate i'd have to get with about 3 or 4 years of university
care_bear - wow, that must've been fun
nik - My husband and I travelled there a long time ago, to Onario and he has family in Canada.
nik - Are you going to school now?
Vic - Thanks for all of your help. If I ever want to go to Canada, I'll be sure to visit the special ed. chatroom once again.
care_bear - we have twins in our daycare right now, they're very busy so they have their own worker
care_bear - no, not right now
care_bear - we live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, about 2 hours away from Kenora, Ont.
nik - Vic, how old is he?
nik - Vic, sometimes they miss the medication at home, and they come to school and act out, especially after a weekend.
nik - care bear, it is hard to work and go to school, I went through that.
nik - Vic, sometimes they miss the medication at home, and they come to school and act out, especially after a weekend.
