Kathleen - Well, do we have student teachers on baord here?
deb/pa - Yes
Kansas - I will student teach in January
JP - I'll help hire teachers in the spring
deb/pa - I have 7 more weeks of my 14 week program
Kathleen - What are your greatest concerns about student teaching? or your greatest needs?
Kansas - I think it is great!! I hope my questions and fears can be addressed
deb/pa - Do all of you have to do detailed lesson plans?sso
KMB - I just finished my 3rd grade assignment and will go to 4th grade Monday for the remainder of the semester/TX
Kathleen - KMB, so you do detailed lesson plans?
Sandy/K/Mo - :-) yes have to have objective stated.. plans checked each week by principal
deb/pa - Yes, my advisor has yet to come observe.
JP - A detailed plan for every subject and lesson ?
Kansas - My lesson plans for my 'Techniques...' class are very detailed.
KMB - yes, but the principal never asks for them
Sandy/K/Mo - Principal comes in our rooms to check..
deb/pa - Yes, my coop teacher said that I don't need to detail, but we have to have them for the advisor.
KMB - honestly, i have been skimping out on them because they are too time consuming (LPs)
Kathleen - what do you all call the classroom teacher with whom you work? co-op teacher? Does your co-op teacher review your plans?
KMB - Co-op, yes, she reviews them (kindof)
JP - I ask my student teachers to write MOST plans in outline form and ONLY one or two a week in Detailed Form
deb/pa - Yes, she goes over them with me.
Kathleen - I'm glad that when I was in training that I did detailed plans that were reviewed, I think it helped me learn to structure lessons well, to understand the need for objectives, tho I don;t put them into writing as much now, I know why I do what I do.
JP - JP is a REALIST
Kathleen - JP, that seems a good compromise for busy students
deb/pa - JP - how long do you have a student teacher?
JP - I'm much more interested in the Journal entries and reflections that student teachers are required to write
Kansas - In my 'techniques' class, we have to do very detailed lesson plans with extra things like Bloom's Taxonomy. Does anyone have to do this in the regular classroom? How do you find the time?
JP - Student teachers that I have are from UConn, a FIVE year program that ends with a Masters degree
KMB - here is a question...what should you do if you have a co-op tchr who stays at school until 6pm everynight? I mean, I am dedicated, but also am not being paid right now and have other school commitments...
JP - Student teachers have TWO placements in their senior year - each for half a semester
Kathleen - KMB, do you feel that your co-op teacher has an expectation that you stay that late?
JP - KMB - does he/she have a life outside of school ?
Kathleen - (I think it's better for you to have a co-op teacher who stays until 6 than one who runs out the door at the bell;-)
Kathleen - But, you have to be able to allocate your time, reality again
JP - And perhaps this Co-Op teachers takes nothing home
KMB - actually, it hasnt happened yet, but I am told that this teacher stays that late ALL the time, and I am looking for some suggestions if the situation arises :-)
KMB - very true Kathleen!
JP - I often leave school at the close of the "teachers' day" and then come back an hour or two later to get things done on the copy machine when the crowd is gone
Kathleen - Leaving to take care of other responsibilities (including reading, reflection, planning and eating :-) is important
KMB - I am told she does expect this, but doesnt verbalize it, so to speak!
Kathleen - KMB, why not wait and get your own impression of what she expects
KMB - oh yes, and that will happen in about 72 hours!
JP - How about undergraduate work - has it prepared you for student teaching
deb/pa - JB- yes and no
Kansas - Does anyone ever had a conflict with the teaching style of your coop teacher and that of your visiting professor?
KMB - as far as understanding what the teachers are talking about when they "teacher talk" like SSR, Blooms, etc, school has prepared me immensely
Kathleen - KMB, that counts for something, feeling comfortable with the jargaon, philosophy. Do you have some confidence about jumping into the fray of the classroom?
KMB - the act of teaching, i feel, is something you either have or you dont, and you just continue to refine your skills each day! I love it!
JP - KBM - I agree, but a solid background gives you what you need - it's the skill that adds to the art
deb/pa - I love teaching I was a teaching assistant for 13 years. Just didn't have all this work.
DM - deb/pa I taught outside of Harrisburg a long time ago and actually grew up in PA
JP - DM - Try www.disciplinehelp.com
Kathleen - We have e-mail discussion groups that you can join for free. That way you would receive announcements of meetings, events, along with links to the room for the meeting. http://www.teachers.net/mailrings is where you sign up.
deb/pa - Do you all have to take the NTEs?
JP - Connecticut has Praxis I and Praxis II
Kansas - I do
KMB - I am in Texas and tomorrow I am taking the ExCET
deb/pa - I have my last test tomorrow morning at Shippensbury Univ.
Kathleen - big day for some of you tomorrow :-)
KMB - yes, i will be certified to teach in TX just in time to move elsewhere with my military husband!
DM - el certification and I also took the Connect and Praxis for EL Ed
JP - There will be LOTS of jobs in Connecticut advertised in the spring/summer
Kathleen - JP, really? lots of jobs in Conn? I wasn't aware of that. Is mine one of them?? ;-)
DM - Today was my last day as an Instructional Assistant in the resource room, primary spec. ed I was doing that for 2 1/2 yrs. but things changed this year, not as exciting plus, our district just raised the sub pay!
Kathleen - DM< and Deb/pa, you have some good experience in your background that will help you when you apply for teaching positions
deb/pa - My son who graduated last Dec. got a job this year in Loundon County, VA. They hired 347 NEW teachers
deb/pa - How much do subs get where you live?
KMB - yes, but how easy can it be to find a job when I am moving every three years? lots of other AF wives do it but I dont see how!
Kathleen - deb/pa, I think subs in our area earn around $60
Kathleen - KMB, learn from those other AF wives :-)
JP - $62/day for short term - $75 for long term
deb/pa - My student teaching has been great, how about the rest of you?
DM - We are having a job fair in Nov. $60 for anyone w/ assocaite degree, $65 w/ 4 yr and 70 w/teaching cert and 75 for long term
Cokie - This is my first year teaching. I have completed student teacheing.
JP - DM - then your district has to file EXEMPTIONS for those with less than a 4 year degree, right ?
DM - JP I dont' know
JP - DM - that's the regulation
Cokie - deb, what level are you teaching?
deb/pa - Cokie, do you have a long tem position?
Kathleen - Student Teachers, how much help is your college/univ placement office in leading you to teaching positions?
Mel - Not much for me... Job market is not big enough for us... although they give info on fairs in other states
Cokie - Yes, deb, but I'm already looking for a new job.
Kathleen - JP, I didn't realize it was state level, I thought it was district choice. Thanks for the info
deb/pa - Our town and the town I am subbing in is hurtng for subs right now.
Cokie - I student taught Jan1-Apr 30ish
Cokie - Districts should hire permanent subs, and offer pay and benefits. Subs are an important part of school.
Kathleen - those who have student taught already, did you find that there were gaps in your preparation?
Kathleen - Training you wish you had before Student Teaching?
Cokie - As a first year teacher, I still feel gaps. I have a degree in math--not sit down and be quiet! But that's how I spend more than half my time!
Kathleen - LOL!! Cokie, good point!!
JP - Cokie - I understand that
Kathleen - Classroom management must be a big issue for all, it certainly is even for very experienced educators.
deb/pa - I understand why we have to have the detailed plans lke we talked about before, but it is alot of work.
Kathleen - deb, it is certainly a very challenging period in the life of an educator-to-be!
JP - Most practicing classroom teachers don't do detailed plans
DM - I was collaborating in a sixth grade math class for the past 3 wks. and sixth graders scared the heck out of me- attitude big time-not looking forward to those assignments
Cokie - One trick someone shared with me is not to call home b/c kids are misbehaving--instead say the student is flunking b/c they are not on-task, and won't be quiet.
Kathleen - I agree with JP, later you will probably not write plans the way you must now. Most don't
DM - My sister teaches in MD and they have to hand in their plans for the following week yikes!
JP - And most don't really do written reflections - but it is a great help
Cokie - Starting out, detailed plans are important. Try to include time estimates for activitiies.
Kathleen - But DM, they probably aren't the detailed plans that many student teachers are doing
DM - As an IA, the only time my plans were detailed was when I was going to be out and had a sub-
deb/pa - In the class I am student teaching I have an O.D.D. student. I am going to a workshop this week about it.
Cokie - O.D.D.?
JP - Like A.D.D. ?
DM - Time estimates are greatly appreciated by sub
Kathleen - Do you feel that your training (college ed. classes) have contributed to you forming philosophies about how to teach?
Cokie - I feel like my whole school is special ed--the only difference between regular and special is that some have been classified and ohters have not.
DM - Cokie what about inclusion in your school?
Cokie - Training bites. Seminars sponsored by the district are more practical.
Kathleen - Cokie, do you mean the college training?
Cokie - I feel that the ones sponsored by the distirct are demonstrated by current teachers and attended by fellow teachers.
Kathleen - Cokie, do you feel that the district seminars provide more practical, hands-on info?
deb/pa - O.D.D is Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
Cokie - College classes are led by professors who have not taught in years attended mostly by undergrads. It's the blind leading the blind.
Kathleen - Cokie, LOL!
Kathleen - Student Teachers, what are the chances you could bring some of your fellow/sister student teachers to the next meeting?
KMB - It is my longterm educational goal to eventually teach education courses at the university level...how does one go about that?
Cokie - ids in my class are not much different from other students
deb/pa - The student I have becomes very defiant and hostile, but not as bad as last year. He gets very upset if things don't go his way.
KMB - I will tell my fellow ST friends!
Kathleen - KMB, great! thanks!
deb/pa - I will tell my fellow student teachers, too.
Cokie - Is that different from Emotionally Impaired?
DM - That's what I was wondering
deb/pa - Yes, I think so. I will find out more this Thursday.
Kathleen - We would like to have your professors come to use our higher ed forums, do you think you could post a notice about Teachers.Net in your administration buildings, perhaps encourage your professors to check out Teachers.Net?
Kathleen - thanks, deb:-)
DM - On that note, I can now go get B.day cake for my son
Kathleen - DM, go have some fun with cake:-) Thanks for coming. E-mail me, ok? kat@teachers.net
Cokie - Sorry, Kathleen, I did not mean to dis professors. I've had a rough start for my first year teaching.
deb/pa - I have to get some rest for my test tomorrow. Hope you talk to you all again soon.
Kathleen - Cokie, no apology necessary, really, I understand your perspective:-)
Kathleen - Good luck on those tests!!!
Kathleen - Cokie, I have to leave now, but you can stay here and continue the discussion if Blaso joins in. Goodnight! and thanks again:-)
