One-I'd Bubba - Hello
krista - NJ are you a teacher in new jersey?
krista - hi one-I'd bubba!
NJTroy - No, working on alt. cert. here in math, though.
One-I'd Bubba - I'm in San Diego, EXPECTING to be contracted for '02/'03, though I'll have to move in order to do so.
krista - are you two student teaching or do you have your own classrooms?
krista - good luck with the contracting!
NJTroy - no, still a few hurdles before I get to the classroom.
One-I'd Bubba - I'm in Y-6 of subbing. How about everyone else??
krista - I'm student teaching
NJTroy - I'm still in engineering, but hoping to be out by next Sept.
NJTroy - what grade, krista?
krista - 11th grade English
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, math seems to be in HUGE demand EVERYWHERE!
christie - anyone working with at risk kids
krista - no sorry christie
One-I'd Bubba - krista, where & @ what level are you student teaching?
NJTroy - Hope so. I see jobs even mid year here, so if I get through all the prelims, I think it'll be great.
krista - I'm in a New York city public school, and they are regular, college prep level
NJTroy - Meanwhile studying for the Praxis is a bear. 20 years later, Calculus is a dim memory. LOL.
One-I'd Bubba - christie, there's a T who posts on the MainBoard who works with at risk kids.
christie - ok thanks
NJTroy - bubba, what is your contract supposed to be for?
krista - have a good night, all! I have to go finish my lesson plan for the Crucible!
NJTroy - night, krista
One-I'd Bubba - christie, her name is Sharyl, & she is VERY knowledgeable!
christie - I will look on the board
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, I'm elementary, so I'd be placed in K-5. We're talking Los Angeles where there's a **HUGE** need. I plan to lobby hard for G-3.
NJTroy - Should be fun. I work with kids in our church choir 2-6, love them like crazy.
One-I'd Bubba - christie, I'd POST any questions I had there...
christie - ok I will
christie - Thanks for the help
One-I'd Bubba - I'm sure the clientele will be challenging. However, since they give longevity credit for yrs of subbing, the starting pay would be high.
NJTroy - That's a great way to get going. I saw web sites trying to coax teachers to California. Couldn't believe the need is that desperate.
One-I'd Bubba - Um... make that clientele
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, CA probably has enough credentials overall, though they're poorly positioned geographically as well as subject area-wise.
NJTroy - That's easier to believe. Some areas are so expensive, I can imagine it would be hard to get teachers there.
One-I'd Bubba - Hello, fechie! Do you have your own classroom?
fechie - hello everyone
fechie - yes 1 I'd bubba I teach pre-k and I'm finding this year very challenging
One-I'd Bubba - San Diego may be THE most expensive. However, there's a glut of credentialed Ts because the largest district recruits heavily out of state in order to save $!
One-I'd Bubba - I'm a 6th year sub. About all I do prior to K would be an occasional SPED SH class -- & then there are Para pros there also!
NJTroy - What's so challenging about it fechie?
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, what's your motivation to go into teaching? Surely can't be the $!
One-I'd Bubba - Ditto Troy's question, fechie! Bad chemistry amongst the wee ones you have? Also, how many are in your class?
NJTroy - Nope, not $s. I've been down that path for 20 yrs. I'm really unhappy in what I do anymore. Industry is depressed, demands aren't to do engineering, but everything else. I finally looked around and realized there has to be more than this.
NJTroy - Thought really hard about what I liked about what I do & concluded that the thing I really love is sharing information, teaching other people what they need to do something, learning new things myself.
One-I'd Bubba - Do Ts pay into the Social Security System in NJ?
NJTroy - Taught algebra II & trig in college, loved every minute. So, moving on, moving on. Fortunately husband is very supportive.
NJTroy - Don't know if they pay into SS here in NJ, bubba. Good question.
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, that's much like I. I'd just turned 49 when I got my credential!
NJTroy - Cool. I'll be 43. What did you do before?
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, if Ts in NJ DON'T pay into Social Security to stand to be docked up to 2/3 of your Social Security should your combination of SS & T Retirement exceed a certain amount (which isn't all that high!)
NJTroy - bubba, too late, I'll already be over that limit from what we've already earned in pension, 401k, everything else. Lovely problem to have.
One-I'd Bubba - I did most of my previous work in our family's restaurant. However, I've also been an AFDC Eligibility Worker & a naval Dental Technician.
NJTroy - Nice varied career path, there
One-I'd Bubba - I guess bills have been introduced in various House committees to repeal those crappy laws -- & I guess there are 2 of them that impact Ts such as ourselves. I mean, when we've already EARNED the SS!!! in various
NJTroy - must be something we said.
NJTroy - Generally, taxes are designed to rip us off. This is just one more way. Sigh.
One-I'd Bubba - Could it have been the "Power Bar" types I'm munching?!?
NJTroy - Would have thought the NEA would have been all over this type of thing.
NJTroy - LOL, could have been.
One-I'd Bubba - I think they now are. It ALSO affects Ts who SHOULD receive SS via deceased spouses.
NJTroy - I'll have to check out the NJ situation. Never thought of that angle. We keep planning retirement w/o SS anyway. Can't believe they'll really let baby boomers collect. I think my age bracket isn't scheduled collect until 67 or so anyway.
One-I'd Bubba - I keep getting thing saying I'm due about $1400 @ 70. And that COULD be crucial!
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, have you done any subbing?
NJTroy - No, since I'm still working full time, that isn't practical. However, if I get hit in the downsizing, that's next.
One-I'd Bubba - Also, have you done your student teaching yet?
NJTroy - In NJ, don't have to student teach. If you've got 30 credits in subject area & pass Praxis in subject area you're in. Then you get assigned a mentor teacher, do 200 hours of training while you are starting in your own classroom. That's it. No student teaching at all, just the mentoring.
NJTroy - bubba, why 6 yrs subbing? Hard to find position in elementary ed?
One-I'd Bubba - That's going to be VERY stressful -- i.e., training on TOP of what virtually EVERYONE says is the "worst" yr of teaching: Your FIRST!!
Hal - Hi all. is this new/student teacher chat?
NJTroy - yeah, well, can't be worse than what I'm doing now. Stress so bad you can't believe.
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, you got it about the difficulty of finding a position in San Diego. **LOTS** of "games" being played by Human Resource types!
NJTroy - Yes, Hal, welcome.
NJTroy - I hear about that here, but some areas are so bad that it's the teachers who are playing games. Lots of district hopping by science & math teachers according to my friends. Foreign languages as well.
One-I'd Bubba - Yes, Hal. I'm a Y-6 sub REASONABLY confident of a K-5 contract for '02/'03. How about you?
Hal - I'm on the other end of the spectrum - retired from teaching - now write about mentoring
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, would you be placed in 1 of NJ's urban areas? [That's what most of us Californians visualize when see "NJ!"]
NJTroy - What our two small cities?? Or the rest of the state which is suburbs, mountains & oceans? No need to go into urban areas, although there are poorer areas that are more desperate for teachers.
One-I'd Bubba - Hal, I just learned in a couple of yrs CA will REQUIRE Y-1 Ts to be mentored unless they've cleared their credentials, which I already have.
NJTroy - Depends a lot on what area you're trying to start teaching in.
Hal - One-I'd Bubba, I believe CA already does require it (BEST program, I think it's called).
NJTroy - Hal, what did you teach & where?
One-I'd Bubba - In CA there's the "BITSA" mentoring program, though I might well not participate because I think there's LOTS of crappy paperwork that are concomitant with it! "-(
Hal - Are you being mentored some other way?
One-I'd Bubba - Hal, just last wk a District's BITSA person told me the requirements were UPCOMING, & then ONLY for those with their preliminary or 1st credential. [My original was a so-called "professional clear," I've already renewed once.]
One-I'd Bubba - Hal, ALL CA Ts have a "Professional Growth Advisor" for credential renewing purposes. However, I'd not exactly refer to that as mentoring. Meanwhile, Subs have virtually **NO** supervision.
Hal - Would you want a mentor if all the paperwork was mostly out of the picture?
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, virtually ALL my T.Ed classmates had worked as Para pros &/or subbed prior to entering our program. It is an advantage you **SHOULD** pursue, IMHO!
Hal - NJTroy, I taught in Connecticut -- started as a music teacher.
NJTroy - I would if it were practical. But it's not right now. I've got some experience although it's old & at the college level.
One-I'd Bubba - **YES**, Hal! But Y-1 Ts should **NOT** have to put up with extraneous crap while they're trying to sort everything ELSE out!
Hal - Right you are. 1_I-B. REAL mentoring accounts for that.
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, @ what level are you LOOKING to teach? I'd "taught" adults in our business, though that's MILES from teaching wee ones! 8-)
Hal - Later, guys, Got to go now.
One-I'd Bubba - "REAL mentoring," Hal? Please elaborate...
NJTroy - High school math. I actually taught in the classroom. College, quite a bit different than high school, but in math.
Hal - REAL mentoring = relating, supporting, coaching, guiding, cheerleading - NO evaluating!
One-I'd Bubba - Nite, Hal! Troy, the only thing that might be drastically different would be the BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE of the Ss.
NJTroy - Yep, that's exactly what I mean. Big difference between students who want to be there and those who are required to be there.
One-I'd Bubba - **PRECISELY**, Hal!! But, can that CURRENTLY be rec'd any way other than informally??
One-I'd Bubba - Troy, you'll FEEL a **LOT** more comfortable if you get your feet wet subbing, where your gaffes are *FAR* less crucial for you professionally.
Hal - Yep. It happens in a lot of places that understand what new teacher induction needs to be. Unfortunately, most districts have bowed to the ASSESSMENT/ACCOUNTABILITY bandwagon and get caught up in the crap.
Hal - nite angai...
NJTroy - Bubba, I hear you, but at least until next Sept., I need to work. Even after that, I have to bring in some income. Can't go both ways. So, for the moment, I'm concentrating on getting the credentials, then I'll figure out the rest.
One-I'd Bubba - Hal, !! Plus, in CA in looks like the "bandwagon" is to be on a STATE level!
One-I'd Bubba - Hello, 6078! Troy, do what you NEED to do *NOW!* However, if there's a way to maximize your experience beforehand... [My classmates were LEAGUES ahead of me upon finishing our student teaching! ]
NJTroy - too tired. gotta toddle off to bed. night, bubba, good talking to you.
One-I'd Bubba - Likewise, Troy! Nothing but the BEST to ya'! :-)
One-I'd Bubba - teacher6078, are you still here??
One-I'd Bubba - Going, going...
One-I'd Bubba - {{{ poof ! }}}
