Kathleen - Hi! Welcome to The Student Teachers' chat meeting  :-)
Dani - I am having a take over day tomorrow.
Dani - Alma is going to be out and they are not getting a substitute. So it will be me and the 24 children.
Kathleen - Dani, what grade are you working with?
Mohoganee - You will be fine.!
Dani - I hope so.
Mohoganee - Let them know positively who is in control!
Dani - This will be a first, but then the week of the 30th I will only have to do those 4 days. Tues-Fri
Dani - SO that is good.
Mohoganee - Dani: Kathleen asked you a question!!
Dani - Today ms. wright said that they were so quiet that she did not think they were in the room. I was like thank you thank you.
Mohoganee - Make sure you have everything organized and then the day will run smoothly.!
Dani - I will try to organize.
Mohoganee - That's my girl! I know you can do it!
Dani - I will have them in serious order.
Dani - I am in a 1/2 grade in Boston
Dani - Or at least I will try.
Kathleen - Dani, is it public or private?
Mohoganee - I wrote positive notes back to my kids last night, sealed with a sticker, so they were on their desks when they came in. They were excited. I wish you could have seen their faces!
Dani - Mom you know that weird child today he was trying to cut a crayon with a pair of scissors.
Dani - It is a public school.
Mohoganee - What is his problem?
Dani - When I asked him why he said he wanted to see what color it was. Isn;t that strange.
Dani - I think he has a processing problem.
Dani - DId they answer the key question?
Mohoganee - Yeah, from my observations of him, he seems troubled or something!
Mohoganee - What key question?
Kathleen - Dani, do you have good support from your college prof and the classroom teacher?
Dani - His parents seperated the weekend before school started so he came in like that from the beginning.
Kathleen - key question?
Mohoganee - Most times when I log in here, there is no one here!
Dani - Yes I have an excellent support system.
Dani - The questions that I put on the sentence strip. For the writing center. What did you do on you school vacation?
Kathleen - Dani, do you graduate in May?
Dani - Yes I will graduate on MAY 14, 1999.
Kathleen - nancy, did you feel that your student teaching adequately prepped you for the classroom?
Dani - Today Sara decided that she hates all of her children. She was so funny. That poor girl.
nancy - I'm special ed severe and moderate, and yes, I did feel, particularly in the special ed area... not necessarily for the reg. ed that I am qualified for also.
Mohoganee - They must have been horrid little rascals!!
Kathleen - nancy, Dani is student teaching a 1/2 class in Boston. Mohoganee is Dani's mother who is in Bermuda
Mohoganee - My kids were good today!
Dani - SHe does not like 5th grade. Today her teacher handed her all of the report cards to fill out. He is just using her.
nancy - anyone here special ed....
Kathleen - not special ed nancy
Mohoganee - The jerk! That is not her responsibility. She is the student teacher!!
Mohoganee - What grade is she interested in?
Dani - My roommate is special ed but right now she is student teaching 5th grade reg ed.
Kathleen - nancy, any advice for Dani as she finsihes her prep as a teacher?
Dani - SHe wants 3rd or 4th but realy 3rd.
Dani - Poor you mother.
Mohoganee - Can she switch grades at this time!
Kathleen - why poor you, mother?
nancy - If she is finishing with a good teacher, it is a good idea to make notes of anything that you feel are good lessons, or good behavior mods., or anything noteworthy
Dani - NO we only have 3 weeks of teaching left.
Dani - How could she not know that it was you?
Dani - Thank you Nancy, I have been doing that all along. I picked up tips for behavior management, homework, jouranls all sorts of things.
Dani - I must go in a little while. I am going to take a power nap and then I have to do some reading.
nancy - I picked up several wonderful ideas from teachers I worked with during the phases of ed., that helped me get through the reg. ed student teaching
nancy - I would start in early with putting in applications and get your teacher to write a recommendation if she/he likes you and if jobs are hard to come by, here reg. ed. teachers have to wait a while unless they really stand out from the norm.
Kathleen - carl, are you planning to be a teacher? or are you teaching now?
Carl - OOPs I'm a veteran School Psychologist of 22 years. As usual I just jump in before reading, oh well.
nancy - Don't worry Carl, I am a teacher already
Carl - I guess I could reflect on my student teaching days.
Kathleen - Carl, that's okay, not many student teachers came tonight (so far) go ahead and reflect:-)
Carl - That was so long ago but I was so idealistic!!!!
Kathleen - Carl, do you every have students (interns) working with you in your position?
Carl - I used to have interns but not in recent years. They are a lot of work & responsibility.
Kathleen - It is ALOT of work to have a student
Sugahbear - We have a fabulous student teacher in our school right now
Kathleen - Bev, someone you will want to hire?
Sugahbear - Yes...but people are snapping teachers up right now
Kathleen - Sugar, do new teachers have to take the national teacher exam (can't think of the name of it!)
Sugahbear - Yes..they do..it's called the Praxis..now
Deb/WI - That's right they change the name. I've been trying to find out what the new teaching model is after Hunter and have a hard enough time keeping up with that. LOL
Biology - I start student teaching in Jan.
