Frogsy - Hi Stan, how's it going?
Stanley - Hello, how goes it?
Frogsy - Not bad, thanks... hoping to glean some helpful info!
Stanley - So,so... & you?
Stanley - Well, earlier this afternoon I had tomorrow's job cancelled -- after having had it for about 3 wks. Arrrrrgh.... DOESN'T look good for tomorrow, I'm sorry to say...
Frogsy - Awww that's too bad Stanley
Sarah - That's frustrating!
Stanley - Anybody else already booked for maņana?
Sarah - Nope!
Sunny - Nothing yet for me. just Weds. Business is slow. I don't have much faith in the district I'm in anymore.
Bluette - no jobs for tomorrow
Sarah - Hi Bluette
Sunny - Hi Bluette
Bluette - how is everyone?
Bluette - er is so bad here, cold, blowy and more snow expected
Stanley - Well, I work so much I've really no RIGHT to complain. However, I'm also **VERY** proactive in looking for jobs, & I'd "probably" have already had something had the change have happened sooner... :-$
Sarah - Subbing is also slow here. I'm lucky to work 3-4 days in 2 weeks.
Sunny - It's sooooooo cold here!! Brrrrrr....
Bluette - weather...missing this word
Sarah - Where are you at Sunny?
Stanley - Blue, I'm confused: Are you still subbing or working as an IA?
Sunny - I feel that i'm pretty proactive looking for jobs, too...but there doesn't seem to be much. i call the sub caller 1-2 times a week.
Sunny - I am in the chilly Northeast!!!
Sarah - I don't miss the cold, but I wish we had snow!
Bluette - subbing still
Sunny - No snow!!! Thankful for that!!
Sarah - Where
Stanley - All you East coasters: You'd not BELIEVE how nice it's been here in San Diego. Of course, you'll probably get a glimpse during the Super Bowl next Sun!
Sarah - Oops! Where's everyone from?
Bluette - very funny Stanley, we want sunshine and warm weather too
Sunny - Stanley :8
Sunny - I meant that to come out differently! Need a smiley face tutorial!
Stanley - Hello, Trish!
Trish - How do u all like subbing?
Stanley - Frogsy, was that a ribbet I just heard?
Bluette - well, it isn't a living, more like day labor with no benefits, but good for someone who is a student or has small children
Trish - Does it keep you busy?
Trish - Hi Sunny
Sunny - Here I am again. thought computer was going to shut down.
Sunny - Hi Trish
Trish - It's OK for a second income
Stanley - Trish, I **LIKE** subbing, though I AM starting to get a bit concerned that my major employer has increased the subbing pool by 50% over the last several months!
Sunny - I like subbing, but I'm waiting for my own classroom.
Trish - I actually enjoy it
Bluette - and I am none of those..so it is good experience for me but not satisfying after 2 full years, this is #3
Sarah - I really enjoy subbing. I find that it's much less work than being a classroom teacher.
Trish - Amen to that, Sarah
Bluette - I work a lot, every school day possible, with exceptions being before and after a holiday
Sunny - There are many things that I don't like. But, I try not to dwell on it.
rudi_in - I like to sub too, but I would prefer my own class.
Trish - I've taught for 20 yrs. so I'm glad to give up all the grading, planning, and contacting parents
Bluette - I enjoy the variety and trying out things like sped, or reading lab, computer class etc
Trish - I hear u there, Bluette
rudi_in - I am not willing to move so I am waiting for something local to open up.
Sunny - Good point, Trish.
Stanley - GREETINGS, rudi!Yes, I think *MANY* of us would like to be contracted!
Trish - My district has lots of schools so I sub every day
Sunny - I moved once, didn't have much luck. so I moved home.
Stanley - Trish, did you retire from contracted teaching, or just enter another "phase?"
Trish - I was on contract last year, but they RIFed 65 educators because of budget cuts.
rudi_in - If I move, it is going to be across town to a bigger house. lol
rudi_in - RIFed -- reading is fun?? lol
Bluette - I don't like meetings, paper work, sucking up to superiors, so being a sub is perfect...at least for not having those problems
mb - hello all
Trish - Now I like subbing so much that I don't think I want to go back to contract teaching
Sunny - Trish, did you sub before you taught full time?
Trish - No, RIFed for Reduction in Force
Stanley - RIFed, Trish? Also, in what part of the country are you?
Jess - I'm enjoying subbing for the experience I am gaining but can't wait for my own classroom
Sunny - hi mb, hi jess
Bluette - you must have a comparable salary Trish, I get 1/3 of a new teacher
Sarah - I am definitely looking for my own classroom again. A year off was enough for me!
Bluette - less than 10,000 for 2002
Trish - Even though I taught for 20 years, I was new to my current district so I was RIFed along with 64 other new educators to the district
Jess - that's a bummer Trish
mb - That is scary Trish
rudi_in - that is a lot of reducing action. We are lucky to have that many in the whole district.
Trish - No, my salary stinks but I'm not working nearly as hard either so it's an OK trade. Like I said, though, only as a second income. If it was our primary income, our goose would be cooked
Stanley - Education is NO "picnic," is it? Sarah, in what sector of the country do you live?
rudi_in - small town and all
mb - how soon do you expect districts to start interviewing for fall?
Jess - what state is everyone in?
Sarah - SW Washington (across the river from Portland)
rudi_in - I would guess april
mb - I'm in MO
Trish - I'm in KS
Jess - I'm in MN but moving to AZ because MN is cutting teachres like crazy!
Bluette - NYState, rural district south of Syracuse NY
Sunny - Districts start interviewing in Feb sometimes. It depends.
rudi_in - that is when teachers have to turn in their letters of intent
Trish - mb, what part of MO?
mb - A district I'm not crazy about has ads out now, thinking I better jump on it
rudi_in - at least that is how it is in WI
Frogsy - I'm in Michigan.
mb - Trish, SW, lower corner
Sarah - Jess, where in MN? I lived there most of my life
rudi_in - Me too -- grew up in St. Paul
Stanley - Jess, I'm in San Diego. As for interviewing, I was interviewed by Los Angeles Unified in 10/01 for '02/'03. o
Trish - Oh, I'm not far from KC
Jess - northern MN
Frogsy - I will hopefully get my first call within the next few weeks... I'm soooo nervous
Sunny - I start sending my resumes in March, usually.
Jess - where are you Sarah
Frogsy - (everyone keeps saying Jess, and I keep wanting to respond because that's my real name... lol)
Sunny - Frogsy- first call for subbing?
Sarah - It's like that here in Portland and SW WA.
Frogsy - Sunny... yes
Jess - oh, sorry Frogsy!
Sarah - I grew up in Fosston
Frogsy - Jess... not a problem at all
mb - I was in Portland in October for the NMSA conference
Trish - I'm not sending resumes. My employment file is still active. I figure they can find me if they want me. If not, their loss. How's that for an attitude?
Sunny - I'm sure you'll do fine. It's a little scary at first, but in no time, you'll be an old pro.
mb - It was gorgeous!
Stanley - mb, are the problems SEVERE in the district of which you're not fond?
Jess - I'm in Brrrrmidji!
Sunny - I like your attitude, Trish! A part of me feels that way, too!
Jess - My stepsister/brother-in law are from Fosston!
mb - I'm not sure, some are thrilled with it, others sick of it...
mb - my desire is to teach in my kids district, but I'm afraid there are not many openings
Frogsy - Sunny, I hope so! I think I'll be fine, but... jittery
Trish - Sunny, I was so hurt by the RIF. I had a wonderful evaluation, I thought I had it made.
Bluette - I am not cert and need to go to grad school to do student teaching first
Frogsy - Sorry... but what is an RIF?
Sunny - It sounds terrible, Trish. I've never heard of that RIF. It doesn't sound fair. Could you have been protected by the union?
mb - I was bummed to find out that the school where I was a para hired a long term sub this Spring, NOT ME...
Stanley - mb, well, IF you can "live" with it, you might want to express your interest!
Sunny - Frogsy, speak softly and carry a big stick! LOL
Frogsy - lol, Sunny!
Trish - No, Sunny. They had to get rid of teachers or do something I guess. I thought they could have cut a few administrators.
mb - Stanley, the biggest problem is getting childcare for my own kids if I go.
Sunny - mb, things like that happen a lot . It's a real bummer!
rudi_in - Students are like dogs -- they can smell fear!! lol
mb - you are right Sunny
rudi_in - Be confident when you go in.
Sunny - LOL rudi, but so true!
mb - who's about to have their first day of subbing???
Frogsy - rudi_in, that's what my mom said.... she told me I should practice speaking to my cats... lol
Jess - Trish-that's totally the problem in my curent school district-they've closed two schools....
Frogsy - mb, me
Stanley - Trish, my attitude probably is much like yours: I have **BIG** problems with taking a day off in order to interview -- often for something where, unbeknownst to me, the job is already locked up anyway...
Sunny - I've always said that children are like sharks in that way! LOL
Jess - yet, they still have to pay to keep the schools heated while our class sizes are in the 30's
mb - What grade, do you know frogsy?
Trish - I think the best thing to do Frogsy is just to assure them that they are in good hands. I always start out with a spiel about that, and they relax. Especially in elementary
Frogsy - mb... oh, sorry... I haven't received a call yet. I'm waiting... should be in the system by the end of this week.
Trish - I know, Stanley. It's discouraging sometimes.
Sunny - Stanley, what you wrote reminds me of all the ads I answered, just to find out that they're "polite ads"...they have to put them out, but they've laready hired! Arrrgh
mb - I always start with, "I'm so glad to be here, but remember I'm not Mrs. X so I won't do things just like her"
Frogsy - Trish... that's a good idea. I guess I hadn't thought of that, but the little ones primarily would need that.
Sunny - oops, i mean "already"
mb - Hi OSNBS!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hi! I forgot all about the sub chat!
Stanley - Frogsy, **EVERYONE** is anxious to begin with, & remember, the KIDS won't know you're a first-timer!!
mb - OSBNS
Bluette - I was applying for TA, para jobs but they pay so little I could cry
Frogsy - mb... DEFINITELY a good plan... my mom is a teacher and she said that was the thing she disliked most about subbing the primaries
mb - got your acronym wrong!
Sunny - Seriously, Frogsy, just be yourself. You'll do fine. Be calm, and reassuring, also firm.
Frogsy - Stanley... very true!
mb - I was a title I para for 3 years, the pay was good, but much less than a cert. It was over $12/hr though
Sunny - hi OSBNS..I enjoy reading all your posts!
Bluette - hello OSBNS
Jess - wow that's a lot mb!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I probably missed EVERYTHING! How many of you are looking for classrooms?
rudi_in - I always speak up in a loud, clear, but not obnoxious voice and introduce myself.
mb - I feel like I "know" many of you from reading the board!
Frogsy - mb, somebody told me that parapros only work with special ed kids... I was under the impression that they work pretty much everywhere. What kind of classroom were you in?
rudi_in - I find that tone of voice can tell the students a lot in the first few minutes.
Jess - I subbed for high school band the other day...my first words were....
mb - I am! I want a classroom so bad I'm almost sick over it
Stanley - OSBNS, greetings!!
Sunny - OSBNS...me!!!
rudi_in - Of course, I do all high school and some middle
Jess - "Now I haven't conducted since I was drum major in high school, so you can't make fun of me unless you know me personally"....I had no problems!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Oops....rudi_in I didn't see your "skin"..using black! But if I logoff my computer would probably never let me back on!LOL!
Sunny - I hear ya, mb!
mb - Frogsy, I was actually a kindergarten Title I para, one of 6 in my elem. But the "aides" were spec ed and much lower paid
rudi_in - lol
mb - I'm afraid of Jr Hi and High
Trish - Mine is sorta similar, mb, but I always tell them that I've had lots of experience and that they are in good hands. Sorry about the delay. I was on the phone.
Stanley - OSBNS, I look, but undoubtedly NOT like I could/should...
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I'm glad I'm not the only overanxious sub looking for a classroom!
Sunny - I don't go any higher than grade 6!
Frogsy - mb, so am I... very scared! Esp. since I'm not much older than the kids in high school
mb - I know I have an interview coming up in the next month (per the principal), I've never interviewed for a cert job before. I am one of 4 candidates.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley---I was hoping your message about tonight's chat would have attracted Magoo!
rudi_in - yeah but the kids in high school don't usually smear their snot all over your clothes -- lol
Bluette - I like elem, but they wear me out, MS and HS is just 3 classes and the rest preps and lunch
mb - Well, Frogsy, I wish I could say I'm not much older than them, but I am! I'm a late bloomer
Frogsy - rudi, you never know! lol
OldSubBecomesNewSub - mb, are you interview for a position for this year?
Sunny - ITrue, rudi_in, true!!
Trish - Actually, I like jr. high and high school because that is where my experience is, but I take everything so I can work every day. Tomorrow I'm lucky and have HS English which is what I've taught forever.
mb - speaking of snot...
Jess - I feel the same way sunny and frogsy -I'm only 21 and they're all taller than me, but I can' say no because of the money!
mb - it's amazing where that stuff it smeared!sorry, I'm gross
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hi, Melissa!
Stanley - mb & Frogsy, don't you think primary [particularly Kinder] is a GOOD place to start? I think there the new Sub comes in contact with more adults, who tend to help you get further jobs!
mb - hi Melissa
Frogsy - Jess, me either... I'm afraid all I'll get is HS calls... and I'm quite rusty on many of my subjects!
Sarah - No I don't know them.
Frogsy - *makes a mental note to carry LOTS of Kleenex*
Trish - Well, this has been enjoyable. Take care. all. I need to get off. Daughter wants to check out other chat room.
Sunny - I' mreally only allowed to sub elem, which is where I'm certified. I can also sub sp ed, and for art, etc. They never call me for secondary, because they could get in trouble.
Jess - I said high school band/orchestra ONLY-no other subjects
Frogsy - Bye Trish
Trish - Bye now
Stanley - Jess, can't say no to WHAT grade level?
rudi_in - bye
mb - Stanley, I think that you are probably right. You always have contact with the principal and fellow teachers in the elem...not always in the upper grades
OldSubBecomesNewSub - It's funny reading posts on the board, because I WON't sub for anything hire than 3rd! I know it's limiting myself, but....
Sunny - bye Trish
melissa - is everyone booked for this week
Frogsy - In MI, you only need 90 college credits... nothing else to sub
mb - bye Trish
Bluette - K is so hard, I am wrung out after a day there
melissa - I have no desire to sub highschool will sub anything else
Jess - can't say no to middle school, but will only do music at high school level....the caller in my school district is kind of moody-if you say no...she doesn't call you for a while
melissa - old sub did you ever hear from the hr people
Sunny - I think that primary is great to start with. They are very loveable. They have this thing with routines, but that's all.
melissa - here it is 60
Jess - I'm booked through Thursday-today was my first day not getting a call
Frogsy - Stan, I'm sorry, I missed your post about starting out in kindergarten...
Frogsy - Jess, ours is all automated
rudi_in - When I first signed up in the district I said no elementary
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Melissa, the lady never called back....just assume there were no subs needed!
melissa - it does take a certain kind of person blue, used to teach them
mb - 60 here too
rudi_in - in WI you need a bachelors
melissa - third and fourth are good to start
mb - OSBNS, how far do you have to drive for sub jobs?
Frogsy - I think they're considering lowering it to 60, although subs don't SEEM short...
Sunny - I just got certified in K. I'm hoping that will get me "in the door" for a classroom. We'll see...
Stanley - mb, here most Kinders are 1/2 day, & you tend to pair with the OTHER K T in your room. Moreover, often FOUR Kinder Ts will share a connecting office.
Sarah - I did intermediate for the fist time last week. It was scary for me since I usually do K-2
Jess - what is 60?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Did I miss it? Are you saying 60 degrees?
melissa - good old sub, I haven't received a call from the one district in over a week and was subbing there quite often don't know what to think
mb - I am getting the tougher classrooms now that I'm certified. The secretary told me they knew I could handle the tougher kids. Yeah, right...
melissa - anyway nothing lined up yet this week praying I get to sub
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Oops, 60 credits...cold air to the brain....brainfreeze!
Frogsy - 60 credits to sub
mb - 60 college credits to sub in MO
Jess - same here mb
Jess - oh!!
Sunny - 60 degrees!! I wish!!!! :o
Sarah - They'd probably know my brother.
Bluette - I will take all classes, all grades intil I find out I can't ...
Sarah - Oops that was for Jess!
Stanley - Jess, your schools weren't in session today, were they?
mb - but it was 60 degrees here today!
Sunny - They prefer us to have Bachelors, and to be certified in the area.
Jess - 60 degrees!! Ha ha-its 8 below right now!
melissa - nope credits to sub
Frogsy - I wish it were 60 degrees! Heck, I'd settle for 20!
melissa - I am used to the little ones but actually liked middle school
Jess - but I"m moving to AZ next month and I will never see a negative sign again!!!
rudi_in - knock on wood
melissa - me too blue but not hs
Jess - I think my absolute favorite level is 2nd grade
Sunny - LOL Frogsy
mb - AZ? ugh, I can't stand that heat any better than the frigid weather!
Frogsy - 10 degrees out here
melissa - lucky you
mb - my fav is 2,3 or 4!
Jess - oh I cannot wait!!!
melissa - same her frogsy
Sunny - Fiance just came home from work..is a posicle right now!!
melissa - I like 4 and 5
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I had my name in at a school district about 10-15 min. away...missed 1st call (didn't hear phone) and never called again. I am now signed up w/the district I did a long term for..12 elementary schools (anywhere from 15-30 min. away) and paperwork in another district (15-20 min. away).
Sunny - oops, I mean popsicle!
mb - I don't care much for 1st, but I will never say that in an interview!
rudi_in - I prefer the 11-12 elective classes
Jess - I am signed up in 3 school districts-it really helps to work everyday
Frogsy - It's so cold in my apartment too, because we have a huge patio door, all the cold air gets in...
rudi_in - they are always good kids
Sunny - I like all preK-6th. I can't think of which I like better.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Sorry about that 60 degrees...thought about it after hitting button. We're expecting w/wind chill -15to -25 below for next few days (at least!).
mb - I sub mostly in my son's school
Frogsy - I signed up for the capital area sub system.... 13 districts
Jess - I just applied for a kind. position-but I've never subbed in that grade-I hope it won't be counted against me
Sunny - Us too, OSBNS
Jess - 13 dustricts-do you answer the phone all morning long frogsy??!!
Sunny - Probably not, Jess. They need K teachers, I hear.
Stanley - When ALL my schools are in session, I've access to > 200. However, my major district now reportedly has about 3,000 Subs on its rolls...
rudi_in - lol jess
Bluette - I like whatever it is I am doing that day!!
melissa - same way applying to other schools now, do you all think it is just slow due to time of year and we came off a busy time or should I be scared i did something wrong?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jess, where are you? Would K be a long term or what?
mb - Friday I checked with a local, larger district. They were happy to give me a cert application but since they have 200 subs on the list they are not taking any new
Sarah - Jess, kindergarten is great!
Frogsy - Jess... not in the system yet... should be by the end of the week.
melissa - in four districts
Sunny - OSBNS, did you ever talk to the head of HR?
Frogsy - brb
Sarah - I know--it was gone when I was home in Dec.
Jess - I applied in AZ-they are growing so much that they have to add new teachers
melissa - where is that jess?
melissa - wow stan
Stanley - Blue, I **DEFINITELY** "hear" you about liking what you're doing on a given day!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - melissa, I hoping it is just a slow period! I still replay things in my mind...should I have done this or should I have done that!
melissa - taugth them for four years
mb - I need to get a cert job in a district that qualifies to lower my student loans
Jess - in the Phoenix West Valley they are building new schools every year like crazy...there's so much growth
rudi_in - wow -- I have my name in at four schools -- 2 high and 2 middle
rudi_in - subbed every day last week in the same school
Bluette - I try to give it my all...
mb - are you truly worried OSBNS? Surely there is someone in the district that would be straightforward with you.
melissa - old sub we are on the same wavelength i;ll say a prayer for you if you say one for me lol
rudi_in - can't imagine having name in at that many places
melissa - my aunt and uncle live in tucson
mb - me either, rudi
OldSubBecomesNewSub - No info from Human Resource & they were closed today. I just think it's weird that a large district has no subfinder or automated one...would be better.
Sunny - I think they would tell you if there were a problem. That's what i was told anyway
Stanley - Jess, there's a Sub named "steph" on the Board who lives in AZ, possibly on the outskirts of Phoenix.
mb - a flu epidemic here brought me a lot of work. Many teachers out with their own sick kiddos
melissa - bad for them good for you
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I figure the principal would have pulled me into his office when I picked up my last check & the vp was exceptionally nice to me!
Sarah - Does anyone have much luck calling in for jobs? Our system is automated and I have never been able to pick up a job by calling (and I call frequently).
Jess - stanley-does she post on the sub board? (I've never been on there-just found this chat tonight!)
Frogsy - I am going to put my name in in the districts close to my home too
mb - yes, I guess, but then we had snow and I lost 2 scheduled days
Sunny - I think i should move to AZ!! Sounds good!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - mb, send that flu epidemic to New England! LOL!
melissa - not automated here
Sunny - I have to call the sub caller. So does everyone else. Lately, things have been a mess.
mb - I don't have that kind of system Sarah, no sub finder for me, just calls from the sec's or principals
melissa - and new jersey too
Jess - I hope to get a position right away though, because their sub pay is't as good as I have it now
melissa - wish we had it
Stanley - Sarah, calling in is how I work so much. However, today I'm a victim of circumstances, I suspect...
Sunny - OSBNS, I am also from wonderful New England!!
mb - ok, I'll try to send it up your way
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jess, we have another Jess that posts on the board. She lives in Pennslyvania. I thought you were her!
mb - ok, I'll try to send it up your way
mb - sorry, double post
Sarah - I only get jobs by waiting for my phone to ring!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Sunny, what warm, cozy state? I'm in Massachusetts!
Sunny - Sarah, do you have a human sub caller?
rudi_in - me too sarah
melissa - me to sarah and tired of the silence lol
Bluette - phone still hasn't rung, maybe at 6am???
Sunny - RI!! Just below you
Stanley - Jess, steph occasionally posts, though not as much as she used to since she's also taking coursework.
Jess - oh no-I'm usually "Isabelle"
melissa - thinking the same thing blue
mb - one principal I work for calls as early as 5:40 am
Jess - well its been nice chatting with you all...I've got to get going !!
Jess - good night!
rudi_in - the secretary at the school calls and says "Are you available today?"
melissa - I'll cross my fingers for both of us blue and oldsub too
Sarah - I think we do, but I have never called her. I figure if I'm not working, it gives me a chance to work on my grad work
mb - stanley, you aren't keeping busy these days?
melissa - bye jess
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jess, hop over to the board sometime!
Sunny - Sarah, I have a human sub caller. I wait for her to call..if she doesn't, I call her. But it doesn't always help.
Sunny - bye Jess
Stanley - Jess, when you go to the SubBoard, look for my posts. Use my link to send me an E-mail, including YOUR return address. Then I can send it to steph.
Frogsy - bye Jess
Sarah - Goodnight Jess. It was nice chatting with you! Stay warm!
melissa - I called and left a messae with the one lady just telling her I was avaialbel this week
rudi_in - I prefer to talk to people anyway
rudi_in - instead of machines
melissa - I am not brave enough sunny
rudi_in - lol -- as he types on the computer -- lol
Bluette - have to call before 6 am or I will get another assign!
Stanley - mb, I had a cancellation @ about 2:30 for tomorrow. OTHERWISE I'm fine with the work!
mb - lol rudi
OldSubBecomesNewSub - melissa, I left a message w/human resource saying that I filled out paperwork to increase availablity. Never hurts to give reminders!
Sunny - I used to say the same, melissa...but I've noticed that those who call, get the jobs. that's how it works here. Unfortunately. Our sub caller is very nice.
melissa - blue have you been subbing a lot
mb - I had a cancellation last friday at 7:20...I was ready and walking out the door
melissa - it was like that before holidays sometimes more than one school now nothing much
melissa - interesting sunny
melissa - I figure if they want me they will call
Sunny - that stink, mb. Usually I get cancellation when I get to the school!
Frogsy - I'm scared about getting a 6 a.m. call... I'm not a morning person yet!
melissa - that is what i did with this one school on Friday
OldSubBecomesNewSub - So, Stanley are you like a "permanent sub" or does you district just have a large demand for subs?
Stanley - mb, 7:20 the morning off? THAT'S OUTRAGEOUS!! I **HOPE** you were given ANOTHER gig!!
Sunny - I have the same theory, melissa, but I keep calling anyway. just in case.
mb - Really, Sunny???? Oh, I would be miffed. Infact, I was a little over this one.
Sarah - Goodnight everyone! Have a great week!
rudi_in - When I first started subbing, I did everything I could to give the regular teacher a reason to request me the next time
Frogsy - Goonight Sarah
mb - yes, Stanley, when I picked up my son she called me into the office with 2 more dates
rudi_in - I don't have any trouble getting work now
melissa - maybe I will get fed up enought to try that sunny lol
Sunny - usually, mb, I'll get to the school, and they'll say "Oh, they need you at such and such school". Yes, it's aggravating, but doesn't happen a lot.
melissa - did it work rudi, what were some of those things
Sunny - bye sarah
melissa - what were some of the things rudi
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Frogsy, I know what you mean about mornings. I've gotten into a bad routine! LOL! I wait for the phone from say 6-7:30 and then fall back asleep (w/relieve..LOL!)
Stanley - OSBNS, my major district is the US's 8th largest, & there have been days when they've had over 1,000 absences [due to mandated training].
rudi_in - oh yes, I leave detailed notes about each period, correct papers if any, pick up their mail for them, etc.
melissa - bye sarah
rudi_in - I try to keep the flow as if I were the regular
Sunny - Frogsy, you WILL be a morning person, now!!LOL
melissa - so true sunny
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, I missed it...do you take ANY assignment?
mb - I do not get their mail, that makes me feel weird. Should I?
Sunny - I do the same, rudi, it makes me feel good that I am helping that teacher out.
rudi_in - I am the sub who shows up early and studies the material before class and stays late to take care of business
melissa - I correct if i have time
Sunny - mb, you should, just in case there are important notices for the kiddos to take home.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - mb, I pick up mail. Who knows it could be for you, some schools put notes in for you about different things.
rudi_in - that is my job
Sunny - me too, rudi, I hate being disorganized.
mb - and I don't grade unless I am asked to do so...I don't want anyone grading my papers when I teach. Just me, weird maybe
melissa - I usually do that too rudi, except hard to arrive early at one school when start is 7;45
Frogsy - OSBNS... hehe I'm sure that's what I'll do too!
mb - Ok, I will get mail from now on! Thanks
Bluette - must say goodnight to all of you, see you in 2 weeks...
Frogsy - Sunny... I know! Whether I like it or not... guess I'll have to be if I ever want my own classroom
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I correct EVERYTHING and more, but don't put letter grades.
mb - Good night Bluette!
melissa - bye blue
rudi_in - school here starts at 8:10 and I show up at about 7:20
OldSubBecomesNewSub - bluette, good luck and wishing many days of subbing! LOL!
Sunny - I correct also, usually don't put letter grades or number grades.
Bluette - I didn't get mail one day in HS and there were passes to guidence in the mail for students in HR
melissa - if they don't call until 6:15 it is hard to arrive to early at this one school
Stanley - OSBNS, I try to focus on elementary, though I WILL do MS, &, on several occasions, I've done HS.
melissa - yep blue happy and many days subbing
OldSubBecomesNewSub - rudi_in, what do you do for almost an hour?
Sunny - bye bluette
mb - I'm going to say good night, too. Hope you all are working tomorrow! ((((((fellow subs))))))
Sunny - Stanley, I liked the post you started about where subs eat. Interesting responses.
Frogsy - Question...if you have the kids do some kind of sponge that involves paperwork (like drawing or writing)... but obviously they won't get a grade on it... what do you do with it? Leave it for the teacher? Take it home?
Sunny - night mb!!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, how many days have you subbed since Jan. 1?
Frogsy - Goodnight MB and Bluette
OldSubBecomesNewSub - mb, thanks for the well wishes! See you on the sub board!
melissa - bye mb thanks you too
Stanley - rudi, IMO you're doing WELL by giving yourself PLENTY of time on the front end. For me, at least, that's **THE** most stressful part of the day!
Sunny - I'm not sure what you mean, Frogsy....
rudi_in - I study the plans that the regular leaves for me
melissa - true stanley
rudi_in - and if I need to I will study by reading the text
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Frogsy, I leave art work....it could be for a bulletin board!
rudi_in - the chapter they are on or whatever
Frogsy - Sunny...say you have a class and you have finished the lesson plans, so you give them a kind of sponge activity that involves them drawing or writing something...do you leave it, or take it with you, or throw it out...?
melissa - 6 for me would have been 7 but snow day when scheduled
Sunny - I think it's important to be organized at the beginning of the day. At least for my own sanity.
rudi_in - then I will stop at the attendance office and get roll call sheet
OldSubBecomesNewSub - rudi_in, how long you been subbing?
Frogsy - OSBNS, good point
rudi_in - then I just spend some time networking with the other teacheers
Sunny - If it's cute, I leave it for the teacher. Usually, i just have them take it home.
rudi_in - my first year
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Oh, frogsy....if you implement it & it's not on the list to do...send home!
melissa - i give puzzles or riddles tht aren't open ended
Frogsy - OSBNS... oh, wait one sec... I mean a sponge activity that YOU sanction... not the teacher... sorry
rudi_in - hope to get my own class in the school
rudi_in - this way I can start to prove myself
melissa - on same route rudi
Frogsy - OSBNS... that sounds like a good plan
OldSubBecomesNewSub - yeah, I'd send home if you came up w/the fill-in idea!
Stanley - OSBNS, I missed the 2nd [less than 5 % of my schools were working.] I've worked everything else!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - So, are some of you subbing in schools you want to get classroom positons at?
melissa - yes
rudi_in - yes! absolutely
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, I should move! LOL! Massachusetts is not looking too good economically!
Sunny - Yes, but the district hires us, so we don't have too much say on choosing a school to work at.
rudi_in - If I don't want to work there I don't sub there
Frogsy - I actually decided I want to be an elementary teacher during my last semester as a psych major (about a month ago).... sigh. So I guess I'm going to have to go the Post BA rout
Frogsy - rout=route
melissa - how do you list your subbing on resume, put just one district or all?
Stanley - OSBNS, plus I JUST picked up something for tomorrow!!WHEW, with 3,000 Subs in the District I was starting to sweat!
Sunny - I was a psych major, too, Frogsy!!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Frogsy, It took me forever to get my act together! LOL!
Frogsy - Stanley, how big is your district? We have 1,000 subs.
rudi_in - I am only in two different districts so I list them separately
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley...sticking tongue out! LOL!
melissa - I almost got a long term subbing just on subbing in this one school in district. Then it fell through the night before I was supposed to start
Sunny - that's great, Stanley
rudi_in - 1,000 subs!!
melissa - good for you stan
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Psych was my other major besides Early Childhood!
melissa - me three
Frogsy - Sunny... I was a psych major... then an advertising major... then a journalism... back to psych... and now elementary ed. I've been just about everywhere!
rudi_in - our high school isn't even that big -- lol
melissa - I don't have much room on resume might just list one
rudi_in - students that is
Sunny - Frogsy, you have tasted all worlds!! LOL
melissa - had double major
Stanley - Frogsy, will the post grad route make it more difficult for you to be offered a contract? [In CA you're compensated based upon different levels of post grad units.]
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I'm not going to be picky where I get a classroom! It's a dog eat dog world! LOL!
Frogsy - OSBNS, college at 18 may be a bad idea
Sunny - I think a teacher needs Psych in the classroom these days. I know i've used it the last 3 years.
melissa - I hear you old sub
Frogsy - Stan... I"m not really sure... I've been doing some research, but it's all mumbo jumbo to me... I have to speak to someone in person, I guess.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Resumes...I just can't get it down to 1 page! LOL! I list everything!
Sunny - It IS dog eat dog....
Frogsy - Sunny, definitely! I think it's essential.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Frogsy, sometimes you are better off to post on tnet and someone can always help!
rudi_in - I have a 1 page resume that is very brief -- but I follow it up with a credential file that is 2 pages
Stanley - Frogsy, San Diego City Schools is the US's 8th largest -- are something like 9,000 contracted Ts?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - What's a credentials file?
rudi_in - this way I get my name across the desk twice
Frogsy - My mom said she bought me a teaching bag... she said, "You'll love it... that's all I'm saying." I'm assuming it has frogs on it...She's so sweet.
melissa - wow
Sunny - I had a resume writer do mine, it's 1 1/2 pages. i'm going to get a second opinion, though, because I think it puts everyone off.
Frogsy - OSBNS, good plan... I think I'll do just that!
rudi_in - well resume of course lists my objective and special skills and education
melissa - I want to keep it to one page
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Sunny, my resume is about the same length as yours but headed towards 2!
rudi_in - then the credential file has all of my work history and awards and other important info
Frogsy - Wow, Stanley
rudi_in - send them separately to get name across the desk more than once -- I want them to see my name a lot
Stanley - Frogsy, do the districts have web sites? If so, I suspect contracted pay is listed, probably in a spreadsheet format so you can check the determining factors.
Sunny - I think mine is great, but I'm not sure if it's too much. the resume writer said that resumes for teachers are different than your average Joe resume.
melissa - if i just list one then can keep it same format as other expereince I'll see
rudi_in - It has gotten me a n interview every time so far
melissa - you send it seperately
rudi_in - yes
rudi_in - about a day apart
Frogsy - Stanley, I don't want to teach in this area... I still have a lot of school to go... unfortunately... then once me and my boyfriend finish college here, we're going to move to Maryland
OldSubBecomesNewSub - rudi_in I'll have to think about that...credentials file!
rudi_in - maybe two
melissa - do you do cover letter with both
Sunny - Is your credential file like a mini portfolio, rudi??
rudi_in - no actually that goes separate as well
melissa - the cover letter rudi?
rudi_in - first I send a letter of interest
rudi_in - then next day a resume with the basics
melissa - you send each thing seperate, cover letter resume and then file
rudi_in - then a credential file with work history etc
melissa - ok aka cover letter
Stanley - Frogsy, did you see the link I posted [I believe yesterday]? It has CONCISE, yet SUPERB, info for beginning Subs!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I gotta run...it's getting late & who knows a miracle could happen & I get a late AM call! See ya on the sub board!
melissa - you don't send letter with resume that is interesting
Sunny - Good luck, OSBNS
Frogsy - Stanley, yes... actually, I've been there... very nice site!
rudi_in - they will see my name across their desk many times
melissa - bye old sub I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us
Frogsy - Shoot... I found a website earlier, can't think of the address now... you could look up every district/school in the nation and get stats...
Stanley - OSBNS, **DO** try to stay warm, ya' hear?
Frogsy - Bye OSBNS!
melissa - interesting rudi
rudi_in - I know many employers will dismiss resumes without glancing much at them
rudi_in - 30 seconds tops
melissa - do you let them know in letter that other stuff is coming
rudi_in - so I give them a reason to see my name and take a better look at what I give them
Sunny - Frogsy, if you find that website, post on the sub board. i'd like to see that
rudi_in - no but in first letter I provide number and e-mail
Frogsy - Sure, Sunny
Frogsy - www.greatschools.net
Frogsy - There ya go
Sunny - Thanks, Frogsy!!
melissa - most districts here want both in first mailing
Stanley - Did everyone see Skippy's post about being offered a contract -- sans interview? **GREAT** vignette, & [ideally] the way it SHOULD be, IMHO!
Frogsy - no problem
Frogsy - Yes, I saw Skippy's post... wonderful!
rudi_in - If I see an ad that wants all things together I drop them off in person
Sunny - Yes, i did see Skippy's post. That's very interesting.
melissa - thanks
rudi_in - just a sec -- brb
Sunny - That wouldn't happen here, it's much too political
Sunny - Unless, of course, you're a politician's child!! LOL
Stanley - A **LOT** of "stuff" in Ed happens thru the "inside," & I've NOOOOOO problem with that -- just as long as educrats don't SAY otherwise!
Frogsy - There's a kitten in my lap
Sunny - Unfortunately, Stanley, the educrats often SO say otherwise. Very frustrating.
Sunny - I love kittens!
Sunny - Just put my cat to sleep, she lived 18 years.
Frogsy - Awwww, Sunny, I'm so sorry to hear that
Stanley - Sunny, but don't you think Skippy's offer was "political?" I mean, it certainly wasn't "open" in the CLASSIC sense!
Sunny - It was sad, but she lived a good life. That's what it's all about.
Sunny - Yes, Stanley, I do...but I'm not sure how it happened.
melissa - us too ours was 20
rudi_in - ok
melissa - I was offered position from the inside but then the teacher came back
rudi_in - my first time here -- I like this room
Sunny - That stinks, melissa!
Frogsy - Sunny... indeed... I had to put a 6 month old kitten to sleep because a horrible disease had ravaged him... he didn't even get a chanceBut now I have my two boys, they're happy, healthy, and amazingly cuddly
melissa - yep got a call the night before I was supposed to start
Sunny - That's great Frogsy. When I geta house, that's what i'm doing first. For now, we have fish and a turtle.
Stanley - Sunny, from the reading I felt Skippy thought it was because they liked his style. And, apparently the Principal has the POWER to make such decisions, which is **NOT** the case in many districts!
Sunny - I'm sure there will be others for you, Melissa.
Sunny - I see what you mean, Stanley. To be honset, there are some holes in the story, I think.
melissa - I know but it still has me a bit depressed
Stanley - melissa, so you were contracted, but only for an interim period?
Sunny - I know. melissa. I've been there, too.
melissa - yep it was a three month leave postion
melissa - I know it wasn't meant to be,and I am glad her daughter is doing better
Sunny - I'm going to go. Nice chatting with you all!!
melissa - the middle school principal and other people recomended me
rudi_in - bye sunny
melissa - bye sunny
Sunny - bye!!
Frogsy - Bye Sunny! I think I'm going to take off too
Stanley - Sunny, interesting perspective on Skippy's post. I didn't parse it that closely, but, hey, I'm a fairy tales kind of guy, ya' know?[Not to mention I'm just getting off of 10 days in G-1/2!! ;-) ]
Frogsy - You all take care... I will see you all on the board!
rudi_in - later frogsy
Sunny - Stanley, LOL!! I just read between lines, sometimes
melissa - bye all who are leaving
melissa - to good to be so easy you think sunny
rudi_in - any gymnastics fans?
melissa - wb stan
rudi_in - didn't know you had left
Stanley - Ummm... I clicked on something VERY funny while trying to go to my clipboard a moment ago!
rudi_in - lol -- been there done that -- what did you get?
Stanley - I've been using this meeting room for a couple of yrs now, & I **STILL** get puzzled @ times!I was DEFINITELY "out," though it didn't SHOW me as being logged off!
rudi_in - I have seen that in other rooms
rudi_in - wierd
Stanley - rudi, "What did I get?" No comprendo!
rudi_in - weird
rudi_in - oh you said that you clicked on something very funny
rudi_in - thought you meant with the mouse and it took you to something funny
rudi_in - was wondering what you got
rudi_in - lol
Stanley - Oh, well I've a clipboard utility on my Mac. It's in the upper right hand corner of my screen. I apparently slightly missed it, activating [I believe] a Netscape search in the same browser window.
rudi_in - i see
rudi_in - you been subbing long?
Stanley - Net result, I'm OUT of the meeting room & can ONLY re-enter by loggin back in!
melissa - I'm off catch you on the board
melissa - bye
rudi_in - bye melissa
Stanley - melissa, TAKE CARE, ya' hear?
Stanley - rudi, I'm in my 7th yr [upwards of 1,200 subbing days, about 100 under a leave replacement contract.] How about you?
rudi_in - my first year
rudi_in - went back to school after a 7 year leave to get my license
rudi_in - finally I get to teach
Stanley - You've a credential, right? What in, & do you sub in OTHER areas also?
rudi_in - now I just sub until something opens up
rudi_in - yeah 5-12 broadfield science
rudi_in - i will sub for whatever they need
rudi_in - I am actually the only sub in the district that speaks french so I have done a lot of subbing for the french teachers
Stanley - rudi, I'm 55, got my B.A. in '77, & my credential in '96, so I've, um, got ya' beat by a few!
rudi_in - ironic almost
rudi_in - lol awesome!!
Stanley - How far are you from being credential to teach in French? Also, is science as much in demand in IN as it is here in CA?
rudi_in - I have 16 credits in french so I am not too far from a minor if I really wanted to go for it
Stanley - Also, did your credentialing program require you to do post grad work?
rudi_in - I am in WI and science is in pretty good demand here
rudi_in - no post grad work
rudi_in - just 20 hours of mentored subbing if you wanna call that post grad work
Stanley - Just guessing here, but I think you'd be REAL close to having enough units for what they call a "Supplemental" here in CA.
rudi_in - I probably won't pursue a french license but it is fun to sub
rudi_in - the looks on the kids faces when I started speaking french
Stanley - CA **LOVES** Ts like you because of our salary schedule which compensates based upon yrs of experience AND post grad units. Therefore, you'd be the cheapest possible hire -- & with a DESIRED major, to boot!!
rudi_in - was priceless -- they had never had a sub that could speat it before
rudi_in - our salary sched works the same way
rudi_in - BA -- BA 3 -- BA 6 etc
Stanley - Hey, I'm reasonably fluent in Spanish, but don't "look" it, so I know **EXACTLY** the "looks" you mean! ROTFL
rudi_in - my plusses didn't show
rudi_in - lol
Stanley - I think I had the SAME problem with pluses, though I though *I* made a typo. [I'm on a Mac using Netscape, so that MAY explain it!]
rudi_in - IBM w/IE here
rudi_in - must be the chat room
Stanley - So, do you think you'll have a contract for '03/'04?
rudi_in - lol
rudi_in - everyone I talk to seems to think so
rudi_in - I have heard that a science teacher nearby will retire this summer
rudi_in - maybe
Stanley - You know, the emoticons are different in the meeting room than in room #1 -- at least for me...
rudi_in - I don't want to move but will if I don't find anything this year
Stanley - So, that would be a MS Science position?
rudi_in - I have seen at least a dozen science positions open up in the last couple of months but they were too far away
rudi_in - yeah it was a middle school teacher
rudi_in - 8th grade
rudi_in - that would be OK
Stanley - CA is hard to call right now because of financial problems. However, Los Angeles Unified will probably STILL be needing to replace people on emergency credentials.
rudi_in - that has to be a rough place to sub
rudi_in - I can't imagine
rudi_in - compared to here
rudi_in - classrooms of 18 to 25 here tops
rudi_in - your school district is bigger than our town
rudi_in - lol
Stanley - I've an elementary credential with a supplemental in English, though I DON'T wish to pursue that in MS. Also, by early June I hope to have a GATE certificate [which is worth next to nothing here in San Diego]
rudi_in - what is a GATE cert?
rudi_in - gifted and talented
rudi_in - ?
Stanley - I've not even BEEN in L.A. for perhaps 25 yrs. However, the barrios don't necessarily intimidate me @ Elementary since that's what I do here in San Diego.
Stanley - Correct on the GATE acronym!
rudi_in - a few short in San Diego? -- lol
Stanley - "a few short?" No entiendo!
rudi_in - you said the GATE cert was worth next to nothing so I thought that perhaps you meant that there were not too many gifted and talented in San Diego
Stanley - GOT it! No, it's that San Diego City Schools wants to emphasize other things. Also, I will have spent close to 2K, & the units WON'T get me any highter on the pay scale in City Schools.
rudi_in - ahhh
rudi_in - so is the sub pay based on the salary schedule too?
rudi_in - you move up with credits as a sub too?
Stanley - However, LAUSD [Los Angeles Unified] has a different structure where those units can help me earn 2K/yr MORE if contracted. Also, I hope to package my language proficiency with the GATE cert.
rudi_in - and years?
Stanley - No, Sub pay doesn't change unless ALL Subs get a raise. [Which, at least IMHO, is the way it **SHOULD** be for Subs.]
rudi_in - so what do you get per day over there?
Stanley - I believe experienced Subs would be offered fewer jobs IF the districts HAD to pay us more. Rather, if they feel we've proven our mettle, let them "reward" us with more subbing gigs!
rudi_in - yeah the more my phone rings the better
Stanley - I'm eligible in 4 different districts, though I seldom work in more than 1 of them. IT pays $115.52/day, the others $100 & $95. How about you??
rudi_in - 75 per day
rudi_in - but then again you can buy 3 loaves of bread here for a dollar
Stanley - rudi, since we'd probably earn but a pittance more, missing days would HURT. And, **TRUST ME**, at least around here, **DISTRICTS THINK LIKE THAT!!** ;-(
rudi_in - yeah here they have a "good" sub list and "bad"sub list
rudi_in - the "bad"sub list is for last resort
Stanley - UNBELIEVABLE re the bread! I worked 240 days in '02 for about 27K taxable gross, yet I'd be in a **HURT** if I didn't reside with my [healthy] 84 yr old dad!
rudi_in - wow that is good cash round here
Stanley - You know, & what FROSTS me is that John Q. Public has **NO** concept it's as "dirty" as it is!
rudi_in - that is just as good as first year regular teachers
Stanley - Well, look @ the # of days, PLUS I was lucky enough to teach 14 days of intercession [@ about $90/day more], & I earned 12% or so more for about 2 months this fall.
rudi_in - cool
rudi_in - I am stuck with 75 a day regardless
rudi_in - of what is going on
rudi_in - well hey, nice chatting but I gotta go
rudi_in - it is 2 hours later here
rudi_in - almost 10:30
Stanley - Here in SDCS I'd start @, I believe, about 38K, but [of course] with health & dental insurance. In LAUSD next yr I'd start @ 57K -- because they'll give me longevity credit for my years of subbing!! Um, @ age 55, THAT'S why I might well move!!
Stanley - Well, good luck tomorrow! Do you have work already??
rudi_in - no but I am sure they will call -- they usually have me in at least 3 days a week
rudi_in - later
Stanley - Do you post on the SubBoard? You can often find me there under, surprise, "Stanley!"
Stanley - As we say here, "Hasta luego!"
