Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Janet/4/AR/host - Welcome to the Sub. Teachers meeting.
Janet/4/AR/host - Bette and Silver, Are you Sub. Teachers?
Silver - yes
Bette - yes
Silver - I teach at a private school in Calgary
Bette - I am a sub in Calif
Janet/4/AR/host - Silver, I teach in a Private School. I teach 4th grade.
Silver - I'm more the Jr. High and high school, though I've done almost all of the grades in our school (3-12)
jtab23 - i am a perm school sub at a high school in pa- have been for 8 weeks
Bette - I caught the post
Janet/4/AR/host - jtab23, how is it going for you?
jtab23 - i just interviewed for a long term position and should find out about it tom
jtab23 - i love it
Janet/4/AR/host - jtab, Good Luck!
Silver - wow... I've had a couple of interviews lately... it seems you can't get a job without experience, and you can't get experience without a job... *sigh*
jtab23 - are any of you familiar with william glasser's ideas/books?
Silver - not really...
Janet/4/AR/host - Silver, I know what ya mean. I was sooooooooooo happy to get my 4th grade position this year and I am having a ball with my 4th grade kiddos.
jtab23 - as i sat down to begin my interview the chair broke. it was hilarious!
Cheryl R - Silver, I agree about the interviews. Been having my fair share of those lately.
Janet/4/AR/host - Is there anything specific you all want to talk about tonight?
jtab23 - are any of you familiar with the "reap" system for online teaching applications?
Bette - I have a question about "rewards" and mess ups.
Silver - Yes, Cheryl, it's really frustrating to have put that much time into something and not be able to realize your goals right away...
Magoo, puff, pant - I have a sub thing I could use some input on.....is it okay to bring this up, O Esteemed Moderator???
Silver - How do you deal with students who want you to be their teacher instead of their own teacher? A reaction?
Bette - I try to get them to tell me what they LIKE about their teacher. Get some positive thoughts going
Janet/4/AR/host - Silver, that is a candle! I have had that happen to me and the students told the teacher that. LOL
Magoo, puff, pant - Okay, several weeks ago I posted that a long-term sub was hired here to finish the year for a teacher who retired in January. The position was never opened up at all, the sub was just hired, boom, and, the fact that her Mom works in the bldg may or may not have anything to do with it. NOW, rumor has it that there is another fly in the ointment.
Silver - Yeah, I asked them if there was something they liked about her... they're jr. high,so everything is extreme... "we hate her!"
Bette - what's the fly magoo?
Janet/4/AR/host - Bette, that is what I tried to do as well.
Silver - how did that happen?
tami - I just wanted to share a quick story..
Magoo, puff, pant - A grievance was filed by teacher union reps regarding this situation (subs are not represented), and now, the latest is, they are going to have to open the position up to everyone, and go thru it all again!!!
Stanley - Silver, though a DEFINITE candle, they're just venting... I mean, WE never do that, right? {VERY big G}
Cheryl R - pambre, it was the principal actually. She told me that I didn't respect her or her school because I didn't stand up to shake her hand when she introduced herself to me ( i was spending the day in K as an aide). She also asked for personal info on me and when I asked her and her staff as why they needed it the only answer I was given was "policy". Also was accosted by staff at school for most of the day in one way or another.
Silver - I'm hoping that the fact that they like me so much will lead to a full time position... they're an expanding school
Silver - hi knightmom
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, I just wanted to thank you for hosting while my puter was sick. In fact got a new one.
Alisen - Thanks...I was so excited to find this site, I feel so alone as a sub most times!
Bette - oh my gosh! where do you think you stand now?
tami - My son had a sub today and he told me everything that the sub and his teacher did different... HOwever he ended the conversation by telling me that it was nice to have someone different everynow and then!!!!
Cheryl R - Alisen, where do you sub?
Magoo, puff, pant - This is so stupid, because they will, no doubt, hire the same gal over again (which I think they should, rather than have those kids get used to a 3rd teacher), but good grief, what nonsense!! If they had just opened it if the first place....
Silver - that's tough, cheryl
Stanley - pambre, THANKS -- I just came back from a swim, so THIS was the first place I went!
Alisen - Southern NJ
Janet/4/AR/host - Alisen, I know what ya mean. But really you aren't here at all!
Bette - Stanley, the only swimming we are doing in Northern Cal is in the puddles from the hail storms!
knightmom - anyone see the reports from Shirley about the survey done in Wisc about substitutes?
Stanley - You make a good point there, Silver!
Cheryl R - Alisen, where specifically? my husband is origionally from Upper Montclair
Janet/4/AR/host - Is everyone here tonight a sub? I am actually a teacher.
Bette - sub
Cheryl R - Sub, for too long.
Janet/4/AR/host - But I use to sub before landing a position.
knightmom - Yep, Just started this year and I feel like an old pro from reading all the posts on the sub chatboard!
Neil - new sub
Cheryl R - Want to teach in own classroom.
Alisen - Could have used the input here on Friday, when I found out that the teacher for the class I subbed for on Wed and Thurs taught EXACTLY the same stuff I taught on Friday. Even the novel chapters we read orally....
Alisen - Cheryl, Medford NJ
Stanley - Okaaaaay, Janet: Ya'mean WE'RE not Ts? [Sorry, COULDN'T resist...  ]
Magoo, puff, pant - EXCUSE ME, MISS JANET, BUT US SUBS ARE TEACHERS, TOO, A-HEM !  Would you care to rephrase that, my dear, or do we discuss detention???
Cheryl R - He has no clue where that is (i just asked him)
swtprncsslauren4 - ARE THERE ANY TEACHERS IN HERE THAT LIVE IN OKLAHOMA?
knightmom - Anyone really want to land a full time position? I like subbing. Not having to do lessonplans and deal wiht parents, etc. I went to school to originally become a teacher and now I only want to sub.
Cheryl R - I'm with Magoo!
Neil - how many here have teaching credentials?
Janet/4/AR/host - Welcome swtprnsslauren4
Alisen - Cheryl, it's near Cherry Hill (everyone's heard of there, I think.) Midway between Philly and Atlantic City.
Bette - life credential. that tells you how old I am!
Magoo, puff, pant - I am an old sub, this is my 7th year and I love it.
Janet/4/AR/host - Neil, I do. elem. ed/spec. ed/soc. stds.
knightmom - I have a BS in Sec ed but no certi (raan out of money back then)
Cheryl R - Kmom, my parents did not spend over 80 thousand for me spend my life subbing and doing office work and working retail.
Cheryl R - so are you near Trenton at all?
Stanley - Neil, I do, & I'd like my own classroom, but I suspect my file is fairly bare, & I HATE to ask for help...
knightmom - I paid my own way through schopol as my parents thought collegeg was a waste of money. I learned more than education in college, and am happy for having done it.
Neil - I'm thinking of going to school and getting a cred
Magoo, puff, pant - I have teaching cert. because here (Wash.) you can't sub w/o it. I am double-cert in Wash. and Idaho
Cheryl R - I have BS in Elem ed and psych
pambre - kmom I sub because I love it and I have masters in Social Work.
Neil - geez, I feel so under-qualified!
Alisen - Have been thinking of going back to school for a certification, I need 4 classes I think.
Stanley - Neil, Elementary or Single Subject?
Cheryl R - have what is called advanced provisonal cert. will need a master's in order to get full cert.
Janet/4/AR/host - Neil, I am so glad I went back to college.
knightmom - Hey Cheryl, I had a minor in psych! If I go back to school now they want me to redo AAALL my educ credits over ! Can't afford that with one son in college and another in HS.
Neil - either, Stanley
Magoo, puff, pant - I like subbing for lots of reasons, one of which is, if I am feeling crummy, I don't have to worry about the next day, I can stay home and drown in snot and not be stressed about lessons, etc.
Neil - I have a masters in music
Alisen - What are the pros and cons of elementary vs single subject, which is what I have been struggling with...which is more marketable...
Stanley - Neil, If you've no particular preference, then check what's MOST needed in your area.
Neil - I have a masters in music, pretty useless most of the time!
Cheryl R - That's a catch 22 also. Can't pay for it without a teaching job. Can't get teaching job cause some places want master's degree.
pambre - Neil, you could really use your music in sped or pre-school classes.
Stanley - Neil, do you have a minor in anything? Also, I'd think the music would be valuable in Elementary.
Neil - I did SPED the other day, I liked it
Neil - No, just music, I went to music school
Janet/4/AR/host - Neil, Spec. ed is a biggie to have. If you like it go for it!
knightmom - I did CD today. supposed to be the main teacher, but the two aides knew the whole system and did most of the work..Did I feel like a moron!?
Magoo, puff, pant - Neil, stay away from elem. music unless you love little kids and doing programs 2-3 times a year.
Stanley - k.mom, what's CD??
knightmom - cognitive diabled...autisitic, cerebral palsy, etc.
Magoo, puff, pant - knightmom, what is CD??? civil disobediance?? cat-dog?? crummy detention??
Janet/4/AR/host - I have quite a mixture of ablities in my 4th grade class.
knightmom - It was mostly, learning basics of living, if possible, laundry, some PT , feeding themselves, etc.
Stanley - k.mom, here that'd be called SH or possibly Independent Life Skill. I did SH preschoolers a wk ago today. How many kids did you have?
knightmom - They are in a selfcontained part of school..don't go with other students at all. One on one teaacher/aide to s.
Magoo, puff, pant - knightmom, holy socks, that is quite a combo!! I couldn't do that. Where I am, the autistic kids and CP kids, and a couple of MD kids, are in the classrooms. Some have aides, some don't.
knightmom - They were 6-8th graders. one girl (autisitic) one boy (cerebral palsy) and another boy (I think Spina bifida no language, physical skills couldn't feed himslef) had two aids and me and some colege students plus the PT and speech people at times.
Stanley - Greetings, sloja! Do you already sub, or just thinking about it?
knightmom - What, may I ask is Mr. Tim's Teacher Tips? never heard of it..
Stanley - Driving is the most difficult thing I do (particularly @ night), but I can cope. Heck, my dad has been functioning on but 1 "real" eye for about 30 yrs now!
Kathleen - I got the book through Inspiring Teachers, http://www.inspiringteachers.com
Cheryl R - How much was it?
Kathleen - Mr. Tim's Teacher Tips should be available by e-mail bedley@the-word.net
Kathleen - The list price is $15, it's paper covered, spiral bound
Magoo, puff, pant - Is it 'inspiring' teachers or 'perspiring teachers'???
Janet/4/AR/host - I will be posting on the regular chatboard and the sub chatboard about the meetings here at TNET!
Stanley - Since the topic of training for subs has been on the board [again], I personally think this board is **THE** best training a sub could have!!
Magoo, puff, pant - I can get my hands on our local sub list, could send them each a note about the sub board.........
knightmom - You are right about that, Stanley. I have learned more from this chatboard than subbing for years could have done I think. It is invaluable to me.
pambre - I think that is a wonderfull idea for getting hold of a sub list. Thank you Magoo!!!!!!!!!1
Magoo, puff, pant - Training? for subs? You mean.....learn how to do it BEFORE entering a classroom???? YE GODS AND LITTLE FISHES, THAT'S BLASPHEMY!!! Let the newbies sweat it out like we did.
knightmom - I dont' know how to get a hold of the sub list. I think the district keeps that under lock and key for fear of theft!! stealing subs and all. But I will ask anyway.
Janet/4/AR/host - Well everyone it is now 10:00. Thanks for attending the meeting and I hope to see everyone at next months meeting!!!
pambre - Day from h....... is same as bad day or just a day where children are out of control.
Magoo, puff, pant - knightmom, I was puffing and panting when I first got here because I thought I was late because I can never remember about the time zone differences so I put 'puff, pant' in totally forgetting that it would remain as long as I did.
knightmom - Hey Magoo, I wrote that letter to the principal of the MS about the kids who done me wrong. Still have to deliver it though. I wrote that I wanted an apology in front of parents or he would never be allowed in one of my classrooms again when I sub. He's not cutting me out of $$. Sound OK?
Stanley - pambre, Funny you should mention that... it was the one other clear idea I had. But since I didn't know WHERE to put it...
Janet/4/AR/host - Well I have to go now. Everyone have a wonderful month! Hope to see everyone at next months meeting!
Magoo, puff, pant - pambre, oh, I get it---just about any day in 6th grade, then??
Janet/4/AR/host - Night everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pambre - Magoo the district put 6 in middle school and now they are fun.
Magoo, puff, pant - Well, Janet, if you must, you must......thank you for riding herd on us again.......kind of like herding cats, isn't it, trying to control this bunch??
JF - I'm teaching fifth and wanted to hear what subs had to say
Stanley - Janet, Good to "see" you once again! Take care!!! }}}
knightmom - pambre, our district did reverse, put 6th back in elem from the MS and we have nothing but problems at MS now. Go figure!
JF - IEver hear of the teacher who has a jar of ashes on her desk?
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, 5th, my hat is off to you ***taking hat off***. I will sub 5th at one school in my district, the others are too out of control. I do, honestly, admire anyone who can do that grade every day and survive. All those hormones.........
JF - She tells her kids that they belong to the kids who misbehaved last year.
Stanley - JF, this is a fairly wild & crazy bunch. [Notice my restraint?] Don't know if you should generalize from US!! {G}
Magoo, puff, pant - hey, I've seen a jar of ashes in a mail order cat. but can't remember what the label is.......
knightmom - Of the student swho were bad? like or what? There is one teacher who has a funny jar with the words "Problem Students" on it..
JF - I was told to leave third last year (5 years) to teach fifth.
Magoo, puff, pant - Stanley, don't mince words....we are not a 'fairly' wild and crazy bunch, we are a TOTALLY wild and crazy bunch.
Cheryl R - I've seen that jar too! In catalogs. My favorite is problem parents!!
pambre - I think I will carry such a jar around from now on.
JF - I love it but I know what you mean about hormones.
knightmom - JF, you were told? How do they make taching assignments where you are?
Cheryl R - JF, how come? That is my favorite grade level.
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, you were TOLD to leave? You didn't have a choice? That isn't fair.
JF - I don't need to watch soap opers, I live on the set!
knightmom - I prefer K-6 and HS, but hate MS with a passion!
Magoo, puff, pant - Our dist. had 6-7-8 together for years, then put 6 back down in Elem. and I'm thinking it should be back with 7 & 8. 6ths are 'older' than they used to be.
Stanley - JF, now I've got to go find someone with a fireplace! {G}
Cheryl R - I love to do elem. up to grade 4.
JF - I loved third, hated to leave, but won't leave fifth now
knightmom - Right youa re Magoo, elem are having control prob noow and MS is the place for them I think.
Magoo, puff, pant - I won't sub over 6th. I don't have the patience anymore for the attitudes.......besides, my hormones are fake now, and combined with fresh, young, untried ones.....well, the combination is not good.......
JF - Our principals can switch whenever they choose
Cheryl R - Magoo, I agree about 6th graders. I remember when (as a student) 6th was in the elem schools. Don't think I could have survived 6th if it was in a jr high.
knightmom - JF, where are you at? location wise I mean?
pambre - I must leave to get some sleep. On Tuesday I get to be in behvior disorder room for MR children under age 10. Ni te all!
Stanley - JF, I've had several long terms & a leave replacement contract that included G-5s. The MAJORITY, I'd say, are not yet hormonal, but when you have a group that IS... arrrrrrgh!!
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, 3rd is a tough year for kids, you must have been very good at it. They get cursive and times tables both.....double whammy.
JF - None of the teachers at my school would take it so I got it cause I was low man or woman
knightmom - night pambre, see you onthe chatboard! loved talking with you tonight.
JF - Southern Ca
Cheryl R - Magoo, that's funny I love teaching those two concepts in 3rd.
Magoo, puff, pant - nighty, pambre, good to have you here again!!
knightmom - Stanley, another Californian for you! Right?
Stanley - JF, I'm in San Diego. Where are you??
Magoo, puff, pant - Hey, JF, southern Calif. would you send some sunshine to eastern Washington, please???
knightmom - I love the 3rd grade too, and the 4th as well, there is lots of material that can be taught in so many differetn ways tothem that are neat and fun.
JF - I paniced about 5th so worked real hard at developing a management system over the summer
Cheryl R - Magoo, is that Washington state?
Stanley - JF, do you also think they may have "stacked the deck?" Once I saw that in K, & the result was A T R O C I O U S !!!
Magoo, puff, pant - I am having fun, but I need to go finish my sewing project--made a new cover for our feather comfy (the boughten ones are ugly and cost too much) and I need to finish it tonight.
JF - Simi Valley, Ca I'd be glad to send you some sunshine... would a smile do?
knightmom - Shirley, any more news on the Conference this summer? More speakers..I think you ought to get Magoo tocome and speak at one seminar.. it would be a blast hearing her in person I think.
JF - What do u mean Stacked the Deck?
Cheryl R - JF, are you in the same school as last year? Might be nice to already know some of the kiddos.
ns - JF Come to the sub chatboard and tell us about your management system. Some roving days I get 5th.
Magoo, puff, pant - Cheryl, yes, Washington state--SE corner, where Wash. Idaho and Oregon come together. UG-LEE!! deserty, not green like the other side of the Cascades.......
Stanley - JF, I'm 4 wks & a day off of surgery for a detached retina, so our clouds are less painful!  About your mgmt system, what did you come up with??
JF - I taught half of my class in third.Maybe thats why they are good. One student said.. Gee you sure got strict!
knightmom - PLease share, JF, we take any and all aadvise if it works for us subs.
ns - Bye all, gotta go.
JF - My management system is great! It works. How much time do you have?
Magoo, puff, pant - Stanley, 'stacked the deck'-----I interviewed for a 1-2 position this fall, another gal got it (which I am okay about), and BOY did she get dumped on!!! They pulled kids from 5 other rooms, gave her the WORST problems. I have subbed for her several times, and it is the worst-behaved class I have encountered.
knightmom - Night ns, but won't you stay and her the manag system?
knightmom - start it up JF, We are listening (even tho it appears we are not)
Stanley - JF, @ a Kinder charter school there they had 1 male T. They kept moving "problems" into his room -- either because of his gender, or because they figured it was better to have 1 **AWFUL** class rather than several mediocre ones!
Cheryl R - I think she should post it on the sub chatboard so we can all see it and print it out if needed. Plus I need to go but want to hear about it too.
JF - 5th like being in control so I started by giving them control
Magoo, puff, pant - Oh, well, if JF is gonna do show-and-tell, I probably will stick around........
Stanley - How do you give them control, JF?
knightmom - good idea, Cheryl.. JF post specifics on the chatboard please? But continue with the start of it here.
Magoo, puff, pant - Hey, Cheryl, good idea!! JR, could you do that?? In addition to tonight, I mean.
Cheryl R - I've been averaging about one interview a week since dad died. Wondering if he is "sending" them to me or on my own merit.
JF - the curriculum calls for US government. They all get a government job.. Seretary of State/takes kids, notes to office (foreign affairs)
Cheryl R - Either way I am fine with all these interviews that I've been having.
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, so far so good, I like this idea!!
knightmom - Cheryl ,you know he's watching out for you with the Father up above. so jusst accept it and enjoy!
JF - Sect of Interior/ cleans library and overhead sheets etc
Stanley - Magoo, what you said about the 1/2: Sure, what the classroom T does is IMPORTANT, but **SOME** mixes just aren't "doable," ya' know???
JF - Secr of commerce/ takes lunch count
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, are you gonna post on the sub board also so we can print it out??? I really do gots to go, but I want to hear your plan
knightmom - OOOO I like this idea, JF.
JF - Sect of ed/ assists me sometimes they (two ) even teach a lesson
Magoo, puff, pant - Stanley, one of the kids, a boy, is a real twit. His mom has decreed that whenever there is a sub, he is to go to the detention room for the day, as 'change is so hard for him...'
JF - Chief of Staff/reads kids notices from the principal's weekly bulletin
Stanley - Those are good ideas, JF -- plus they fit in with our Am Hist for G-5 SS!
JF - When a sub comes they just all do their job and every runs like clock work
knightmom - I agree Stanley, even down to the 4th grade! Will keep that in mind for next subbing for that grade.
JF - If the sub asks someone to do something other than the person whose supposed to they just explain the system
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, I am dying here, please, please--will you post on the sub board also??? I will send you snickerdoodles if you do, or at least the recipe!!
knightmom - I like that last paaart the best, JF, when the sub cmes. You musst have no problem finding sub for your room.
JF - For behavior.. I made and laminated 4 inch stop signs
Stanley - Magoo, I once a MS S tell me that. I said, "Fine," & gave him a pass! [Something in his deameanor "told me" somethin' would "blow" if I didn't! {G} ]
JF - First offense, I place it quietly on their desk and tell them what I want them to stop doing and what I expect to see
Magoo, puff, pant - ...JF is not answering me...what have I done??
JF - If second offense its an infraction and they pay a fine (ticket system)
JF - On the back of the stop signs are green Go signs
Cheryl R - Magoo, i think she is too busy typing...
knightmom - She's too busy typing it is here. we will ask her again to put it on the chatboard.
JF - rd time they GO out the door to another room and fill out a sheet stating what they did and what they need to change to return to clkass
Cheryl R - I love her ideas though......
Stanley - Another good move, JF. But, can you communicate that without disrupting the class? [I've heard of something similar to your stop signs, but I could never figure how to surmount the hurdle I just mentioned.]
Magoo, puff, pant - LOVE the stop sign thing!! keep going!!
JF - Ok I'll post but I need the address
Magoo, puff, pant - 'refocus'?? we have something like that, but I like the stop signs
knightmom - Ok , JF, I have questions now, but no time for them here. Can you put the full system on the sub teachers chatboard and then we can respond with questions on the same strand for you to answer later?
JF - Will DO
Magoo, puff, pant - what do you do if a kid flips the sign over to green??
knightmom - Just go to the teachers.net/mentors site. down to substitute teachers chatboard and post there. We will all see it there.
Cheryl R - go to teachers.net and go to chat center, click on substitute teachrs and click post a new message.
Stanley - I don't know how to post a link here, but the URL is { www.teachers.net/mentors/substitute_teaching/ }
JF - Kids don't want to leave my room they have too much fun and its embarrassing to go into another class
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, THANK YOU, you've given me some great ideas!!! I want to try the stop sign thing on Fri when I am in the class from h***
Cheryl R - listen to kmom...she was much faster than me,
Cheryl R - or even stanley.
JF - The attorney general's job is to keep track of those whoi get infractions(2nd offense)
knightmom - Doesn't matte who got it CHeryl aslong as it was got! Right?
JF - At the end of three weeks those that have non get a special treat.
Cheryl R - gonna go all. JF, can't wait to see all of this on the chatboard....
knightmom - OOHH that's the best the AG job. But doesn't that open up for hard feelings among the kids?..kind of like ratting onthem?
Stanley - JF, My post was late, so was therefore confusing. How do you communicate what the problem is [early on] without disrupting your lesson?
Magoo, puff, pant - Cheryl, by for now, you take care.......((HUG))
knightmom - Bye, Cheryl..see you on the chatboard soon, I hope.
Stanley - Also, in your post, please explain how you manage the tickets you mentioned!
JF - Not called ratting I let the kids know we are a team and work together to help make the class a satisfying experience for everyone
knightmom - HI Jen, welcome to the winding down part of the sub teachers chat.
Magoo, puff, pant - JF, I will be looking for your post, and thanks so much for sharing with all of us!! Good evening, all, I must go, I really must. I hope you all have a good day tomorrow.
JF - Besides... that's their JOB like a policeman
Jen - thank you
knightmom - Do you think this system works for subs coming into a classsroom for one day at a time? If teacher does not have it inplace beforehand?
Stanley - Ratting, JF???
Magoo, puff, pant - hi, Jen, bye, Jen
JF - I keep the STOPS in my pocket or attached to my collar
knightmom - Bye, Magoo, see you soon darlin. Take care.
JF - ratting= tattling
Jen - So basically I missed the chat?
JF - If the kids are getting noisy or ... I take them out and make them visible. This is a great deterrent
Jen - Story of my life
knightmom - Well,, you can go back and see whta happened so far, but as you can see a lot of people have left already. But we are still here. What's up with you?
Stanley - Some of us are still here, Jen. JF, maybe I missed something, but I don't follow "Not called ratting..."
knightmom - We are here Jen, take heart. What is goiing on with you and where are you form?
Jen - Thank you. It's OK - I only juts found the email and so arrived too late. I'll tyr another time
Jen - try
Jen - I live in California. Is this chat every Sunday evening?
knightmom - I called it ratting, Stan, cause that's what the 6th gradeers would call it, ratting on your freinds..
Jen - By the way, I am not really illiterate, I am just useless at typing!
Stanley - And you have colleagues who are willing to take your kids? When I had a difficult long term G-5 I found several Primary Ts to take kids -- if necessary.
knightmom - See JEn you aren't the on;y one coming in now. Welcome mff. Another Calif..Man do they have their own chatboard there or what?
knightmom - So are we Jen, read all paaast posts of mine! Ha>
Jen
knightmom - Hi mff, welcome!
Jen - I'll svae this link and come back next week! Bye
knightmom - No the chat is ususallu once a month on a Monday eve. if you go to the listings at thetachers.net site it will tell you when next one is?? I don't know for sure either right now.
Stanley - mff & Jen, are you Subs? Also, I'm in San Diego, Jen. Whereabouts are you in CA?
mff - Hi everyone,I'm from Michigan. I'll be starting to sub soon. What are the main things I need to prepare?
knightmom - Have a good evening Jen  and see you soon, COme to the chatboard and write to the group as a whole there too. We can all talk with you there too.
knightmom - Your life INsurance, your medications, and forget your need for caffeine. That should start you out right!
knightmom - I'm in Wisc by the way in Milw.
knightmom - Just kidding, Stanley, you take over on this one.. Youv;e had most experience!
Stanley - mff, I just posted something to that effect this afternoon. Check out { teachers.net/mentors/substitute_teaching/topic2937/2.19.01.15.37.59.html } later on when you've time.
mff - Ha, Ha...I subbed about eleven years ago before my kids. I seem to remember a "bag of tricks", seems like that could be quite a load!
knightmom - As far as the bag goes, it's just the essentails like paper, pens, a game or two for queit play, some work sheets youv;e run off for age group, a book to read for primarty grades, candy if you have rewards system, your own needed thinkgs like aspirin,, bandaids, carry a spare set of sweats for teaching gym class or feild trips.. etc. more info on that on the sub cahtboard.
Stanley - mff, One of the minor points I made was that I HAVE to have but a FEW **VERSATILE** "tricks" in case I'm left without materials. Otherwise *I* wind up being the "master" of NONE of them! {G}
Stanley - Excuse for a sec :: Gotta get some clothes into the dryer!!
mff - So then, do you have a file made up ahead of time...get the call...grab the stuff for the grade...stuff in the bag and go?
knightmom - Personaly I've never really been left without lesson plans but have something for the time when it does happen (and it will) like Stanley says. My biggest problem is trying to figure out what the topics of the classes are..llike for Soc Stud are they in Govt or are they in work hist,, or English reading one author, or doing paarts of speech, I can never figure that out before I go to school and by then I awould have had a brefcases full to the brim of material that may or may not get used.
knightmom - I may have to start a files system here at home with the worksheets I can find and then grab a bunch like you said as I go out & hope that they fit in with the class system./
knightmom - But anyway, welcome back to subbing.. come to the chatboard often and you will find a wealth of info there for your subbing experience.
mff - Also, when I last subbed I used a lot of rewards like candy, stickers etc.. I get the impression that that kind of stuff is discouraged. Something about expectations. How can you get expectations for such a short period?of
Stanley - mff, The file scenario you mention is COMMONLY recommended. I do **NOT** do it because I KNOW I can't manage it. Moreover, there are lots of little glitches, like, how do you remember to resupply what you use, & who pays for it??
knightmom - Rewards are still used I guess,, depends on the sub I think and what works for you. I don't think candy and stickers are bad when used in moderation by a sub.. How some teachers can ecxpect perfect behavior form all clases is beyand me.. But I have used candy and stickers once or twice and it went ok.
knightmom - That is my problem, Stanley about who pays for it..obviouly out of our own pockets cause its our stuff. But the cost is sometimes high..
Stanley - mff, Rewards is a hot button topic. Suffice it to say that there are **GOOD** people playin' on EACH side of the fence! {G}
mff - Thanks guys...I'm going to log off and check the sub discussion board then go to bed..Nighty Night!!!
knightmom - Well, guys have to go ..almost 10pm here and my fingers are tired of typiong so you believe? Nice talking with you again Stanley, get that laundry done tonight! and hope to see you on the sub teachers chatboard mff . take care.
knightmom - night Stan,, be good!
Stanley - k.mom, I'll sometimes spend 3-$5/day on prizes [candy, because it's most cost effective], but I can manage that EFFICIENTLY -- unlike what I'd be doing restocking umpteen different folders.
knightmom - That;s right Stan, but I'd rather have a good worksheet that have tootsie rolls for them all sometimes. It makes me feel better about the teaching part of the job anyway.
Stanley - I will, & I STILL have intentions about sending you an E-mail re jazz music!
knightmom - I think if worked well, ther could be just several files for each age group .
knightmom - By the way, hear of Bill Watrous? Good trombone sound if you can find his stuff.
knightmom - I'm here anytime at bknight0108@hotmail.com,, I willeven look up my son's last CD and ssee what he played & tell you , K?
Stanley - I don't know how to do it, though. I have multiple read alouds [all library books], a nature video, & stuff in my head. NOTHIN' to restock -- 'cept the library books from time to time.
knightmom - I haven't done it yet, Stan but I've tried to figure out how to do it without going broke or crazy in the process. Nothing comes yet.
Stanley - Good, ask your son if he knows of Brian Culbertson: A fairly young guy [did his 1st album from college, I believe], a keyboardist, from your neck of the woods [I believe], AND his REAL love is the trombone!!!
knightmom - How about Whirlybird by Stan Kenton???(?) My son played that at last Jazz fest (main drummer )and his arms nearly fell off after!
knightmom - Will check on Bria Culbertson. Never heard hoim before.. will ask kids trombone teacher. and let you know.
Stanley - I've heard OF Kenton & Waltrous, but the stuff I listen to is more what is oft called "smooth" jazz. DO ask your son about Brian Culbertson, however!
knightmom - Stan, why are we always the last to leave these chat sessions? Do you think anyone is suspicious of us (yet)?
knightmom - I sther is CD by Culbertson out that I can find?
Stanley - Hmmm... they MAY "tape" these things, but only until 10 ET, so our "secret" is safe... {sly G}
knightmom - Nice to know our reputation is untarnished ..if they only knew{G}
knightmom - Nice to know our reputation is untarnished ..if they only knew{G}
Stanley - His most recent is called "Something About Love" -- one of my FAVORITE CD's!!!
knightmom - {giggle} have to go now Stan, hubby is getting suspicious. I will look for that CD and thanks for the info. Will let you know if I find it!
knightmom - Have a nice night and remember to fluff AND fold ! Bye, Stan.
Stanley - A quick note about the name "Brian." I used to be an eligibility worker for AFDC. One of my clients wanted to name her son Brian, but couldn't spell it. So, "Brain" was what went on the birth cert!
knightmom - Oh that hurt, Stan, that poor kid, hope he changed it later in life. I used to be Soc worker with deling kids, so I saw a few good name too, like Dew drop ...etc. What are those people thinking?
Stanley - Some just don't know... But, with a mom like Brain's, he'll probably be anything BUT, ya' know?
knightmom)) Gotcha!
Stanley - Going, going...
knightmom - Go now, Stan, to your laundry.. I must go to my books and read to the gripping ending of my Dean Koonts book. Later,,,,,
Stanley - !Buenos noches! and... <<< poof!! >>
