Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Janet/AR/host - Welcome to the Sub. TEacher's meeting.
Janet/AR/host - lee, are you a substitute teacher?
lee - Yes.
Janet/AR/host - lee, What grades to you sub for?
lee - I hear you have an interview?
lee - I sub mostly k-6.
Janet/AR/host - lee, yes I did. How did you hear about my interview?
lee - I read about it on one of the chatboards. :)
Janet/AR/host - I sub mainly in the primary grades because they seem to get their call in first. LOL
lee - You were asking a question about something and mentioned it. Congratulations and good luck!
Janet/AR/host - Thanks lee. I have been trying for 3 years now. It is in a Christian school.
lee - Great. I'd love to teach in a Christian school, but my husband won't let me--not enough money.
Janet/AR/host - I hope to be teaching 5th grade. It may end up being 2nd. Are you wanting a teaching position?
lee - Oh, yes. I just called the district this morning to see if they are interviewing yet.
Janet/AR/host - Lee, did you have any luck?
lee - Not with the 2nd grade I applied for . They have yet to begin interviews for the special ed.
Janet/AR/host - laurap, are you looking for a position? Welcome KrAzEeJo to the sub teacher's meeting.
lee - They told me to call back next Monday!
Curt - Janet -- I've subbed for elementary through 12th grade. :-)
laurap - curt, you've been staying out of trouble lately... what gives? :-)
laurap - your sense of humor really livens up the board
Janet/AR/host - WoW Curt!
Janet/AR/host - Does everyone like their subbing job?
Janet/AR/host - Well I still have my full time job at the hospital right now but hopefully soon I will find out about a teaching position I applied for and interviewed.
Janet/AR/host - Does anyone have anything specific they want to talk about?
lee - Janet, tell us what kind of questions they asked you at your interview.
Tacy - I am wondering how you all handle the gossip in the teachers lounge, esp. when the other teachers try to engage you. Any insights??
Janet/AR/host - Well he asked if I belonged to a church.
lee - Tacy, I just act like I'm listening, then forget everything I heard.
Janet/AR/host - Asked if I would do an afterschool program.
laurap - Janet, i may have missed something; is the job you're going for in a Christian school?
lee - LOL, Janet. I guess that's to be expected.
Janet/AR/host - He asked me to tell him about myself.
Janet/AR/host - laurap. yes it is.
Curt - I just listen in the teachers' lounge. Ignore most of it -- although I love gossip. :-)
laurap - My girls went to a Christian school til grade 5; it was a good way to start
Janet/AR/host - He asked me if I could handle a student that came up to me and said they wanted to be saved.
laurap - for the teachers, the pay was low
lee - Well, I could answer that one, at least! :)
lee - Too bad public school won't ask me that!
Curt - Agreed, Tacy. The viewing space is so tiny.
laurap - but class size was small: biggest class either girl was ever in had 15 students
Janet/AR/host - yes the pay is not that great but I want to teach! He asked me if a 2nd grade position if I would be willing to take that grade instead of the 5th.
laurap - most of the teachers there were not there for the money but saw it as their ministry
lee - Laurap, that's one of the nce things about Christian schools.
laurap - they were wonderful teachers--only one crazy one in the bunch and she is no longer there
laurap - so... is everyone employed for the summer?
Tacy - I applied for a Christian school position once, but they had a list of rules: no dancing, no plauing cards (of any kind), must attend their church, etc. I decided not to continue with the application.
Janet/AR/host - laurap, one problem was I am not able to go to church because of my hospital job.
lee - Laurap, I was going to work, but hubby said no, he wanted me to go on the semi with him. Then he went back to local driving!
Curt - ... laurap, looking forward to working in retail -- American Eagle, clothing sales. :-)
laurap - there is one Christian school here in my town where moms can't even come in to pick up their kids if wearing slacks... ugh... not for me
laurap - that's right... you're an Ohioan like me, LEE
lee - Yup. :)
Curt - ... also working for the Census. Interviewing people against their will. LOL ... uh...
laurap - well, Curt, I am now a FOUR STAR CASHIER at walmart!
lee - LOL at Curt.
Janet/AR/host - I don't mind the rules.
laurap - what a hoot!
lee - Wow. laurap!
laurap - i work with some of the kids i teach
Curt - God bless Walmart.
Tacy - Wish I could work at WalMart. I love that store!! Unfortunately, the closest one is a 100 mile round trip!
laurap - well, don't be too impressed lee... to be a four star cashier, i think the qualifications are: you have to show up for work, breathe, and know how to count the change out of the till... :-)
Janet/AR/host - I like Walmart! My fav. place. We are getting 2 supercenters here.
lee - Oh, Tacy, you poor soul! I'm there every weekend. I should own stock, I spend so much there!
laurap - Tacy, I LOVE walmart
laurap - i tell the kids, if we can't find it there, we're not buying it!
laurap - i do make some exceptions, of course
Curt - Lol laurap :-)
read2day - Hi everybody. I'm a Title teacher, not a sub. I just stopped by to express my appreciation for subs ! As a Title teacher I am often asked to sub. I always knew it was a difficult job, but I didn't realize HOW difficult. The worst part was finding things I needed.
Janet/AR/host - How many of you sub full time?
laurap - oh bless you, read2day... that's nice
Tacy - What do you mean by full-time? Every day?
lee - Laurap, I worked there one summer, setting up for the superwalmart. They trained me to be a cashier. It's nothing like it was 10 years ago when I did it before. If you can make it to one star, you're a better woman than me!
Curt - Hi read2day
laurap - janet, i guess i would say i sub full time; i am able to work just about every day
Janet/AR/host - read2day, I agree, but here most of the teachers are pretty good about having everything ready even the morning work on the students desk
Curt - alright then, read, thanks for thanking us. :-)
laurap - Lee, i really do like it there; they treat us well, and the discount is a great way to stretch the budget, and my bonus last year was over $400
Janet/AR/host - laurap, I subbed on off days and vacation days from the hospital.
Tacy - I only work in one school of 300 kids, so I average about 3 days per week.
Janet/AR/host - read2day, thanks for the kind words!! :-)
lee - Thank you, read2day
Casub - Ohmygod...Stanley tried to show me how to do this "chat thing" after school today...am I doing it O.K.? Hi you guys?
read2day - I always have to fill in when someone calls in unexpectedly. I know the kids so that really helps. I think it would be hard going to a lot of different schools.
lee - Thank you, read2day
Stanley - Had to twist Casub's arm RIGHT off, too. Hey, but NOW she qualifies for preferred parking because of her disability! :-)
Curt - I'm not sure if I can stand being in the same room as mary. LOL
lee - Oh, Curt, the fun has just begun! Come back next time!
Stanley - lee, Got your map card today. THANK-YOU!!!
read2day - How well are the subs paid where you teach? It is shameful what our district pays. Our teachers tried to negotiate a raise for them, but the board wouldn't even talk to us about it because the subs aren't members of the bargaining unit.
Janet/AR/host - read2day, $44.00 a day for cert. subs.
laurap - read2: i get $67.50 per day
mary - Gee, I stumble in and Curt leaves...what does that mean?
lee - read2day, 52 per day for k-6, 72 per day for 7-12
Tacy - I make $105. per day, but it starts over every year at $90.00 :0( One of the things I'm trying to get the teachers union to change!
Stanley - No problem, lee -- we're testing again now anyway (sigh)...
read2day - Janet, WOW. Ours pays $55 and I thought that was low.
Curt - I'm normally paid 65 to 75-dollars per day... southeastern PA
read2day - Lee, whoever set that wage, never subbed in Kindergarten LOL
Janet/AR/host - read2day, that is why I can not do subbing full time.
laurap - wow, $105 a day... i'd think i died and gone to heaven...
Stanley - Casub, what are we up to now -- $105 something?
lee - Stanley, did the kids have a chance to see the card?
Curt - No,no, no... I'm still here to annoy everyone. :-)
lee - LOL read2day, I AGREE!
Tacy - Oh gosh & I think $90.00 is bad!!
Stanley - lee, They've seen the 1st 2. #3 came in after lunch. I've not yet told them about hubby's change of jobs.
Casub - Stanley...you said I could pick my color---lee already has it! I have to leave this place, even hitting "freeze" isn't helping! I get dizzy here! Love you guys---Casub
laurap - Curt, good... glad you're still here... i must tell you, i LOVE when you do those John Doe posts... you really rile up the blood pressure on the chatboard
read2day - It is a crime that some subs aren't paid much more than minimum wage!
mary - I knew it, I knew it, it was something I said, right? I guess I'm "logged on". Out here, if you are logged anything, you have to wear suspenders and high water britches and clunky boots....
Janet/AR/host - read2day, I agree!
Stanley - Busy, BUSY, Janet, & you? Casub & I have adjoining classrms until school lets out on 7/21!
read2day - Our district always has a shortage of subs. But they don't feel that raising the daily wage would help. Can you believe it?
laurap - i can just hear someone sending you the message curt: JOHN DOE, get out of subbing, cigarettes are BAD for you, and you should not be in the profession
lee - Unfortunately, read2day, I I can. Seems like all districts are that way.
mary - I've got whathisname's disease--I don't remember what LOL means. HEY, $90 a day for subs?? I'm moving! I get $77.50, God forbid they should make it a sensisble # like $80...where do these yokels get these goofy numbers, anyway??
Curt - laugh out loud = LOL, mary
Janet/AR/host - Stanley, may have a teaching position finally!
laurap - Curt, it's sort of like (gee, are you old enough to remember this) Gilda Radner as Emily Latella: "What's all this i hear about violins on TV??" the responses you get sometimes make me think of her
read2day - I also can't believe that our teacher's union can't do anything to help them. Subs have to belong to the union in order for us to represent them. We can't ask subs to pay $400 to join the union.
Janet/AR/host - mary, don't come to Arkansas if you want to be paid good for subbing. LOL $44.00 a day here.
lee - I'm not sure if our union would even let us join!
Tacy - The head of the teachers union here said she's take my proposal to the table!
Janet/AR/host - Subs can't join union here.
read2day - We wanted to give subs a special a special dues rate, but Ohio Education Assoc. won't let us.
Stanley - Casub, You can always just hit the back button. PuhLEEEEZ -- you're ruining my rep as a T! <<<G>>>
laurap - stanley, you might have a permanent job??
Tacy - I'm not a member of the union, don't think they'd let me!
read2day - Tacy, I hope your union doesn't run into the same thing ours did when we tried to take it to the table.
Tacy - They are so desperate for subs, I think they are willing to do something.
Stanley - laurap, I don't REALLY think so, though a # of things are still up in the air.
lee - read2day, what part of Ohio are you from?
Connie - Hi, Subs in our district belong to the teachers union. We pay a basic fee after so many days and then it depends on how many days we work.
read2day - Southeastern, near Steubenville
laurap - We can always hope, right Stanley?
lee - read2day, I'm in Wellsville
Janet/AR/host - Connie, what state do you live?
Stanley - laurap, Any chance YOURS will morph into something once you finish that assignment early in 2000/2001??
lee - Sub at Southern Local
read2day - Really lee?
read2day - I work for Harrison Hills
Connie - Washington
mary - Is there a sub union in Washington? (dream on, dream on)
lee - Hey, I've heard of them!! lol
read2day - It's a small world
Janet/AR/host - Connie, what grades do you sub for?
lee - Yup, it sure is!
read2day - I teach in Cadiz, lee
laurap - On the last day of school when I turned in my keys, the principal thanked me for the job i had done with the long term, and she said an eng teacher had just resigned at the high school she said after they played musical chairs, the opening might end up at her school. i said, if it does, i hope you'll interview me again. She said, i'm not messing around with interviews this time; i'll just hire you.
Tacy - I'm in WA & I don't know of a sub union
lee - I've never been there. I've been to Steubenville, and wintersville, and carrollton.
Curt - I hate missing anything, but I must run. My love and respect to you all. (waving) ... Curt
Janet/AR/host - WONDERFUL! laurap!
Connie - I do secondary and if they really beg, I take a rare day in elementary.
read2day - That's great laurap. Hope you get the job!
Stanley - MUCH of San Diego County has had to raise it's sub pay because ONE district, albeit 1 of the nation's largest, includes us in collective bargaining.
Tacy - Bye Curt...nice chatting with you! have a GREAT summer!
Janet/AR/host - Bye Curt, thanks for attending the meeting.
Connie - Tacy, we belong to the district's teachers' union - PEA.
laurap - well, i'm not holding my breath. i hung by a slender thread all last summer, and this summer, i am just saying, que sera, sera...
read2day - lee, I think we may have played Union Local in Football, but I'm not sure.
Janet/AR/host - Connie, I do elem.
laurap - bye, curt
Tacy - What kind of benefits do you get Connie?
lee - Could be. :)
Stanley - Wow, SUPER, laurap! I didn't have to interview where I am either -- possibly for similar reasons.
read2day - lee, do you sub for both elem and hs?
Tacy - That's my kind of job, no interview!!
lee - read2day, mostly elem. but some high scholl.
laurap - hi Ivan... are you the same ivan that sometimes posts on the general board?
Connie - Tacy, we don't get benefits yet - We've only belonged a couple years. We have one more year to go on the contract. We're hoping to get some next time.
Janet/AR/host - The district I sub for has not even interviewed me for any positions in the 3 years I have subbed. Big sub shortage.
read2day - Janet, when your district hires, do they hire from the sub pool or new people?
Janet/AR/host - So I am going outside the district for a position.
Tacy - What do you get paid Connie? Are you in western WA?
Janet/AR/host - read2day, Well not from the sub pool.
Stanley - Yeah, those ARE the best, aren't they, Tacy? Hey, but if they already feel they know you 'cuz of subbing...
read2day - Janet, that is SO unfair.
Connie - I'm a senior sub and get $99.54. Other subs get $04 and change.I'm in Puyallu[.
Janet/AR/host - read2day, one of the comp. lab teachers was in tears the last day of school coz they hired a male sub that had only subbed a 1/2 year there.
laurap - That's the case with me, stanley... i've done five long term subs at her school, plus she and the asst prin interviewed me last year
read2day - Our district usually hires people who have done a good job subbing. That's the way it should be. The principal has a great opportunity to pick the best teachers. Unfortunately it is usually the superintendent who hire, not the principals.
Janet/AR/host - read2day, hopefully I will get this job at the Christian school.
lee - True, read2day.
lee - Janet, will you still be our host if you get hired? :)
Connie - OOPs, other subs get $94 and change. Slight difference.
Stanley - laurap, Would they then find someone else for the assignment to which you are supposed to return?
laurap - We hope so, Janet... keep us posted... did they say when you'll know?
Janet/AR/host - read2day, I am considered a good sub and get requested all the time.
laurap - yes, they would call another sub...
Janet/AR/host - Lee, yes I will. I enjoy the meetings.
Tacy - I'm up in the Cascade Mts. After seeing other wages, I feel fortunate.
read2day - Janet, I hope you get the job. My son went to private school. He had great dedicated teachers.
laurap - f i don't get a full time, i've got this long term to go back to and at full salary... that will be a great way to start the subbing year
Janet/AR/host - laurap, Around the 1st of July!
laurap - stanley, when does your school year end? or does it?
read2day - Janet, Unfortunately, those schools don't pay very well. But it will be as good as sub wages, won't it?
laurap - Janet, two more weeks..... awful, the waiting, isn't it?
Janet/AR/host - That sure would make a nice Birthday present for me. My B-day is on the 10th.
Stanley - Janet, How much less pay would you receive for being contracted in a private rather than public school?
Janet/AR/host - read2day, better than sub pay.
Tacy - We'll be rootin' for you Janet!
read2day - Janet, the kids are much better behaved. If the kids don't behave....they are gone!
Janet/AR/host - Well he said he could start me out making more than a starting teacher there due to my subbing and certifications.
Janet/AR/host - I will also be doing afterschool program.
read2day - Janet, I tutored in our afterschool program. We got a grant to run it and the pay is great....$35 for an hour after school.
Stanley - 7/21, laurap. I might do a wk of intercession after that, they want to include me in the training (1 wk) Ts @ our site are receiving. Moreover, 1 of my districts will still be having REGULAR classes thru the end of Aug!
Janet/AR/host - laurap, the waiting is the hardest part!
Janet/AR/host - $35.00 per day?
Tacy - Lucky you, Stanley!!
laurap - wow, stanley... i am of the old school, no pun intended... i love my summers
Janet/AR/host - I don't know how much the afterschool pay.
lee - I'm with you about summers.laurap!
read2day - Yes Janet. And it was just tutoring one or two kids at a time. I only did it twice a week, but I got $70 per week.
laurap - when i was in banking, i worked all summer while my girls stayed with my sister... the first year i was downsized, i got a big severance package, so i took the whole summer off... oh, it was heaven having all those days with my girls
read2day - I'm oldschool, too. I LOVE my summers free!
Stanley - read, $35/hr??? Wow, here I think we're in the mid 20s for "out of contract" work like that! :-)
Janet/AR/host - I know I would like my summers, too!
Tacy - Well, I'd better sign off...kids & cats are hungry!
laurap - our last day at the pool before school started again, we all turned around to look back at the pool and cried: we had had such a great summer together
laurap - we got over that, of course, and my hours at walmart in the summer still allow us lots of time togehter
read2day - Stanley, our school got a grant from Dept. of Human Services and we could may the pay whatever we wanted. We knew we were going to have a hard time getting teachers to do it, so we set the pay high.
Red - Is everyone still getting regular work subbing? When is everyone's school year over?
Stanley - laurap, I hear you re the summers. But, I've no kids, I'll probably not be offered work EVERY day!
read2day - Our school was out June 6
Red - What state read2day?
Janet/AR/host - School was out here on May 31st.
read2day - Red, I'm in Ohio
laurap - Red, mine was over june 7
lee - School was out here on May31.
Red - Wow! that seems so early! I've been subbing for BOCES, both they and district are out wed, 6/21. I'm in NY
laurap - who else here from ohio besides me, lee, and read2day?
Stanley - laurap, I'd take summers TOO if I had kids that were off! :-)
laurap - Stanley, do you remember Erin O?
Stanley - Red who's Green <g>, What is BOCES?
laurap - No, stanley, i wondered if you ever heard anything
lee - Bye read2day Maybe I'll see you around sometime
Red - Stanley, BOCES stands for Board Of Cooperative Education Services. In NY, specifically my county, BOCES has a technical education center, a special ed site and an alternative HS for ADT, GED and IEP kids...
Stanley - Red, Interesting. I work in a big district, San Diego Unified, but I don't think we have anything like that!
laurap - Stanley, i've been visiting the sub board for about 3 years now, and when i think back, i wonder what happened to this one and that one... you do become attached to the personalities and the stories there
Red - I don't know if it's strictly NY or what... I do know that all of NY has a BOCES. They run by county.
Red - BOCES. Kids are bussed in from their home district. you may live in Poughkeepsie, for example, but be a student at Special Ed site with students from six other distrcits. I 've subbed for BOCES since January and have gotten work everyday!! Compared with the few calls I've gotten from district.
Red - I do enjoy it. Although I'm certified Elem Ed, not Spec Ed. It was tough to get used to, but I've had tons of experience. And b/c I've subbed for them, BOCES, I was offered a job teahing summer school. My first teaching job, I'm SOOOO excited, I can't wait for it to start.
Stanley - Red, Is the summer school SPED or "reg" ed?
Red - Stanley, Spec Ed.
Stanley - Curt, Will you have benefits with the retail job?
Stanley - No offers, Red. But I'm in a better position than I HAVE been, or so I THINK! <G>
Red - Generally though, Stanley, the summer school kids ahve trouble with retension, there are VERY FEW behavior probs in the summer. It's pretty laid back. it's mostly geared toward maintenance.
Stanley - Red, are lots in NY teaching SPED on emergency credentials?
Red - I'll be off to grad school in Spet. In NY you need a masters with in 5 years.
Stanley - What ages are the kiddos, Red?
Red - For the summer, you don't need spec ed certificatoin. It's very different than the regular school year.
Stanley - What I notice in CA is that Ts LEAVE SPED -- usually because of the paperwork, or so they say.
Red - Satnley: My kids: youngest is almost six, oldest is almost 8. I have 9 students. At the school I'll be at, for the summer the kids are generally elementary. There is a program that is hosted at the Alternative HS too
Stanley - My site (I'm on a leave replacement contract thru 7/21) had 3 credentialed SPED Ts who switched over to Gen Ed.
Red - I've heard that too STANLEY, not sure if it's that or burn out, which happens often.
Stanley - I need to ask the 1 that is still CURRENTLY there why she got out.
Janet/AR/host - I would love to thank everyone for attending the meetings! Don't forget to attend next month! Hope to see everyone there!!
Janet/AR/host - bye everyone have a great night!
