Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Janet/Ar - Welcome to the Substitutes Teachers Meeting.
Janet/Ar - As regular classroom teachers do you have anything you would like to say about subs?
Mary K&1 - Yes, Janet. Where would we be without you!
Kat/kathleen - A school system can't run without substitutes and it can't do a good job without quality substitutes
Lori V. - I think the biggest issue I have is what are my paras responsibilty when there is a sub.
Mountainette 4/WV - I think subs have one of the hardest jobs in the school system. We really do appreciate their hard work!
Janet/Ar - Happy, you are definately right. One of the issues brought up at the last meeting was the subs said that reg. teachers did not leave enough work for the sub to give the students.
Jack's mom - Im not a substitute teacher, but I would like to know how I could help my subs when I'm sick.
Cindee - I was a classroom teacher for 13 years and now I'm a reading specialist... Qualified substitute teachers are very important to the classroom teacher
Mary K&1 - Substitutes have a hard job. I'd like to know what we regs. can and should do to make their jobs a bit less rough.
Janet/Ar - Jack's Mom, do you have any suggestions or issues you would want to discuss?
Cathie/nc - we NEED subs, and need to be prepared for when we need one
Kat/kathleen - Good queston, Mary..what can reg. teachers do to help their subs?
Jack's mom - How can I leave enough for my sub, but still give them the feeling that I trust them to do what they think is best?
Cindee - Good point Jack's mom...
Janet/Ar - Do any of you Reg. Teacher's leave a worksheet for the sub to fill out to help save the sub time?
Janet/Ar - Hi Jules, Welcome to the Substitute Teachers Meeting.
Cindee - I also don't want to leave a lot of "busy" work for them to do either
Mountainette 4/WV - Maybe we could all keep a sub folder with some extra ideas like a word search, crossword, or something extra for the kids to work on
Jules/GA - I always leave detailed plans for my subs, I think it helps to have more than less
Kat/kathleen - Janet, I don't have such a sheet, sounds like a good idea
Janet/Ar - I found a website that would help the sub and the Teacher. the addy is http://users.netonecom.net/~garmar/tips.htm
Mary K&1 - In our district, Subs don't get any inservicing. When we are starting new programs, I think that they should be included in the new info. how can they carry out the lessons if they haven't had an oportunity to see what is expected?
Jack's mom - I always lay out the lesson in detail to make it easier for them. But I also write in big letters to teach the class their way.
Cathie/nc - Janet, I make a sub folder at the beginning of the year with pertinent info about my students and with activities that may help
Jules/GA - I have a folder that has basic info, whick students go to Sp Ed. etc.
Janet/Ar - I am going to compile a worksheet for the reg. teacher to print out. I might help you as a reg. teacher and the sub.
Cindee - Can anyone be a sub? Or do they have to be certified teachers?
Mary K&1 - Cindee, that differs with each state
Jules/GA - In our system, all you have to have is a HS diploma
Janet/Ar - The Sub folder is great. Cindee, I think it depends upon the district. Here in Arkansas anyone can be a sub.
Kat/kathleen - Janet, I would appreciate that
Mary K&1 - In PA they have to be certified, but they don't get paid much!
Cindee - I don't think subs get paid much anywhere, Mary
Janet/Ar - I am a certified sub. Certified subs and non-certified subs do get paid differently.
Jack's mom - In our district, most are teachers with credentials trying to get hired.
Cindee - I'm in VA and anyone with a HS diploma can sub...We try to call certified personnel first though.
Janet/Ar - Another issue from the last meeting is the subs felt they were looked down upon by the Reg. Teachers. Do any of you feel the same way or noticed that happening?
Cindee - Janet, is there a reason why you sub instead of working full time?
Kat/kathleen - I look up to the good subs!
Janet/Ar - Cindee, I am now in the process of looking for a teaching position. I was trying to finish my 20 yrs in at the hospital.
Kat/kathleen - Terri, are you looking for the meeting for substitutes or for the Chatroom
Janet/Ar - Cindee, here in Arkansas can.
Jack's mom - I think substituting would be more difficult than teaching. I think I would feel I couldn't have a schedule.
Cindee - Janet it's been my experience that "subbing" is the best way to get hired. That
Cindee - Opps. Hit the wrong button. That's how I first got hired 15 years ago
Janet/Ar - Jack's Mom, it is difficult especially with classroom management.
Mountainette WV - I agree with you Jack's mom
Janet/Ar - Yes, that is true and that is why I sub and work full time at the hospital.
Janet/Ar - Am I the only Sub here tonight?
Mountainette WV - Well, Janet, how can we regulars help you out? What would you like to see when you go into a strange classroom?
Mary K&1 - Yikes! there's even a Sub shortage here at Teachers.Net!
Mountainette WV - Ha Ha, Mary!!! LOL
Janet/Ar - I guess by having enough work for the subs to have for the students. Everything assessable to them.
Janet/Ar - A friendly letter to the sub.
Janet/Ar - Hopefully more will show up.
Janet/Ar - A shortage of subs is everywhere.
Mountainette WV - Now that's a good idea - a friendly letter to the sub - I will put one in my sub folder - will place it on my "Things to do before school starts list" !!!!
Kat/kathleen - Mary, LOL!! yes, we need more subs here!
Janet/Ar - I belong to the sub mailring and I received it.
Mary K&1 - I asked earlier, but I didn't see any discussion ... maybe I missed it ... Are Subs invited to attend inservice programs at the districts in which they work?
Mountainette WV - I really don't know how to provide more work for the students other than my regular lesson plans unless I know I'm going to be absent.
Janet/Ar - I personally do not like for a teacher to leave a note about a student who might give me problems. Negative info I do not like.
Kat/kathleen - Mary, not in my district..and they wouldn't be paid, so I don't know whether subs would come
Janet/Ar - Good question Mary, I would like to know that too. Especially the certified ones.
Janet/Ar - They are not invited here in Arkansas either.
Sandy/K/Mo - Janet do you like a couple of names that can be helpful?
Mary K&1 - I really think that they should be. How can they be expected to do what is expected if they haven't been given the opportunity to see how theings are supposed to be done?
Sandy/K/Mo - the subs here aren't invited to go to inservice
Janet/Ar - Moutainette, just have some extra work that might be fun for the students. Subs do not seem to get to do any fun thing with the students. Some feel like glorified babysitters.
Kat/kathleen - I don't think it would be a problem to invite the subs to inservice, but paying them would be a problem
Mountainette WV - Regular teachers sometimes feel like that too, Janet. Maybe a fun art activity that could be done anytime to end the day would help????
Janet/Ar - Kat I would be willing to go for free just to learn.
Kat/kathleen - Janet, I know that some would..I'll have to suggest that our subs at least be invited
Sandy/K/Mo - I sometimes leave a name or two of those that can tell where things are if needed
Janet/Ar - Yes, Mountainette, something like that would be great. I try to take a bag of goodies with me with some books, art work, etc with me.
Mary K&1 - Do Subs like to have a choice of what to do? I alway leave lots of activieties and tell them to do what they want. Is that a bad idea?
Janet/Ar - Emu, are you a sub?
Kat/kathleen - janet, that url didn't work for me, did anyone else try it?
Emu - Hi and thanks Janet :)
Emu - yes i am *S*
Mountainette WV - I found a good site for new teachers called T.I.T.A.N. If you want, I'll look on my favorites and see if I can find it.
Kat/kathleen - Emu is a sub..I e-mailed Emu today :-)
Janet/Ar - Mary, No it is not. When a sub is not certified sometimes it can be overwhelming to the sub not knowing how to implement the activity.
Emu - you did? I haven't had a chance to check yet :)
Kat/kathleen - Oh, Emu, LOL! it doesn't matter, you're here :-)
Emu - WEll, i am not certified yet...but i to attend college full time to be a teacher
Janet/Ar - Emu, do you have any issues you would like addressed?
Sandy/K/Mo - I leave lots to do but also a note saying if the sub brought anything to do feel free to do it
Janet/Ar - Emu, that is wonderful!! Good luck with your studies. I am a cert. sub right now.
Emu - Hmmm....Just what an admistrator is looking for when he/she hires....
Janet/Ar - Sandy, that is great.
Emu - That is great! As long as we aren't left empty handed!
Janet/Ar - I agree Emu. Do you bring some activities with you or what I like to call my bag of goodies?
Emu - Yes i do..i have some activities for the kids just in case!
Janet/Ar - I also think if teachers teach how one is to act when a Sub is there during the first of the year it would also help with discipline problems.
Kat/kathleen - Janet, Emu, what grades do you sub in?
Emu - i sub in 1-5
Janet/Ar - Teacher letting the students know that if they get a bad report there is a consequence for their actions.
Janet/Ar - I sub K-8
Emu - the kids in my district are pretty well trained....besides, i tell them up front that i want to have fun with them today and who is going to join me?
Janet/Ar - I mainly subbed for the primary grades.
Emu - And also that if they want a bad day...i am up for htat too!
Janet/Ar - I do the same thing EMU. I do not have some of the problems I have heard some of the subs do.
Emu - How do principal generally deal with handicapped subs??
Kat/kathleen - Does the principal or other adminis. ever check in with you during the day? especially if there is not an assistant in the classroom?
Mountainette WV - TITEN is teacher in training educational network - URL is
http://cu-seeme.educ.utas.edu.au/TITEN/HTML/teachtips/tips.html
Sandy/K/Mo - the principal has told the kids its double trouble if for a sub
Emu - Depends on the school...I have only seen one pricnicpal so far....
Janet/Ar - I am never checked on.
Janet/Ar - Thanks Mountainette.
Sandy/K/Mo - depends on what part of the school the sub is in :-) I am up 2 flights of stairs so she doesn't come up much
Janet/Ar - Emu, I am hearing impaired and they are very supportive of me.
Mary K&1 - A few years ago, one of our admins. required that Subs file out an evaluation of how the reg teacher had things organized for the Sub. We put a halt to that ... didn't feel that it was proper to put anyone in a situation like that. How do you feel about something like that?
Emu - that is great! I am ADHD and sometimes am afraid they might not like that...
Kat/kathleen - I think it would be a good idea for the principal to stop by to see what the reg. tachers has left for a sub..
Emu - mary..my district does that as a checkpiont that we actually have lesson plans available to us I kind of like it ....
Emu - Also the teacher gets to evaluate us too
Janet/Ar - I am not evaluated that I know of. I have not seen an evaluation anyway.
Mountainette WV - We have to turn our lesson plans in first thing Monday and also the principal keeps our sub folder in her files
Mary K&1 - We have to turn our lesson plans in to the office every Friday for the next week. That should cover it, don't you think?
Sandy/K/Mo - our partner teacher goes over plans with the sub and finds things
Janet/Ar - Kat, I do too. Some of the teachers do not leave a folder of work at all and expect the sub to pull things out of their hat to do all day.
Kat/kathleen - Yes, Mary and Maoauntainette, you're right, if plans are turned in, that covers it
Mountainette WV - We always request a person to sub if we have found a sub we really like
Sandy/K/Mo - I would think so Mary..
Mary K&1 - I think that evaluation is an administrators job. I don't feel comfortable with it.
Kat/kathleen - Janet, I can't imagaine that...I spend so much time prepping for being out that it hardly seems worth it (when I have a "choice")
Mountainette WV - That's a good evalution t - to be called back
Mountainette WV - Me too, Kat - if I know I'm going to be out - a page is written on each subject to the sub Takes me an hour to prepare to be absent
Emu - The big honcho looks at all the eval's and if someone wrote something super or really bad....she sends that employee a memo...
Janet/Ar - Kat, it is true, it has happened to me and the teacher was very apologitic to me about it. I did have her lesson plan that was very vague.
Sandy/K/Mo - We have to get our own subs so I try to get the same one all the time
Janet/Ar - I got called all the time and it was nice to know they wanted me back.
Emu - We are on automation, so unless we are requested, there really isn't a way to know...
Janet/Ar - Hi Clue Welcome to the Substitute Teachers Meeting.
Mary K&1 - I find that if I get too detailed in my plans, the Sub doesn't have time to read it all, and it's too hard for them to follow. It's hard to find a happy medium
Kat/kathleen - Clue, are you in a class with Jenni and Terry?
Mountainette WV - Never thought of that, Mary
clue - hi all from Calif
Janet/Ar - Mary, I agree. But the subs that are not certified it is hard for them to understand a vague lesson plan.
Emu - My teachers leave lesson plans, and then i bring a time schedule and jot quick notes on what to when
clue - i ;am trying to figure out how to do this chat....this is new for me
Sandy/K/Mo - I also found out that a couple of subs weren't happy doing computer so leave things for filling in computer time
Kat/kathleen - clue, are you a substitute, a 'reg' teacher or ??
Janet/Ar - Clue, are you a Substitute Teacher?
Sandy/K/Mo - or names of the ones that can take care of gettig the cd's and putting away
Kat/kathleen - clue, you're doing fine, if you want new messages to appear from the bottom of the frame instead of from the top, clcik on 'reverse' over in the left frame
Emu - there are people out there that don't know about puters? (the simple stuff!!)
Janet/Ar - Another thing the subs mentioned in the last meeting was no seating chart. In the folder a seating chart would be most helpful.
clue - why does the aol thing keep spinning???
Kat/kathleen - clue, aol does that here, I guess it's the refreshing..
clue - i don't know Jenny or whoever u said
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - I'm a preservice teacher who will probably end up subbing for a while waiting for an opening
Sandy/K/Mo - a couple I had didn't and wouldn't even go in the room
Kat/kathleen - Jenni, that is good experience and a way to get a foot in the door
Janet/Ar - Jennifer, I am spec. ed. certified. Do you want to sub for spec. ed?
Sandy/K/Mo - clue.. everytime the page refreshes it will move (aol)
Emu - Our teachers are required to keep certain things in the sub folders....seating charts, helpful students etc...
Mary K&1 - clue, this is an automatic loading page. that's why your thing is spinning, the page keeping loading and reloading
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - I want to be a spec ed teacher
Emu - :O your kidding? I can't believe that someone would turn down a job cause of a puter!
Janet/Ar - It sure if just keep on subbing and a job will be there for you eventually.
Emu - Jennifer, what specialty?
clue - clueless about the way this works here
Mountainette WV - My kids can help out with the computer.
Janet/Ar - Jennifer, that is wonderful!!! I love special education.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - I will have ED/LD cert K-9 and the courses minus student teaching for CD K-12/ED & LD 10-12
clue - I am a teacher in private school..but i have substituted before
Janet/Ar - clue, you seem to be doing a great job so far.
Emu - wow! that is a handful!
Janet/Ar - Clue, give us your imput about substitutes.
Janet/Ar - Jennifer, good for you.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - I'll also have regular 1-8 cert.
clue - do any of u go into the teachers lounge on AOL??
Janet/Ar - clue, no just teachers net chatroom.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - I worked in an ED resource room this year and got called in to help with the subs there
Emu - Jennifer that is super!
Kat/kathleen - clue, are you trying to get into the Chatroom here at teachers.net? having trouble? It's the same as this room
Sandy/K/Mo - I did before I found this
clue - i think subbong is great.....good $$$$ and no headaches
Emu - clue...don't have AOL , so i can't
Mary K&1 - clue, where are the good $$$$????
Emu - I second that *S*
Sandy/K/Mo - Good $$ then you don't live around my town :-)
Mountainette WV - I don't have AOL either - teachers net chatroom is great!
Kat/kathleen - clue, I'm not aware of the places wherer the money is good for subs, and I think there are headaches.just different ones
Janet/Ar - Jennifer, did you like the resource room? I found it to be very educational because one can work more one on one there.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - There's good $$ here too, but I need the benefits of a full time job more than the $$
Emu - what is the average pay in your areas? We get at least $11 per hour
Janet/Ar - clue, certified subs here get $44.00 a day here and that is low!
Kat/kathleen - I think our subs are paid $55 a day.
Mary K&1 - I've heard of good pay in parts of Canada, but not here in the Sttates
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - I liked the resource room for that reason and because I got to work on all subjects, all grade levels
Janet/Ar - Jennifer, I have to agree.
Sandy/K/Mo - $50 a day unless for maternity leave then get regular pay
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - subs here get $65
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - and they can't find enough certified people so most districts have permission to hire anyone with a college degree
Emu - here it is...$66day for first 39 times....then $70 after taht
Janet/Ar - non-certified subs only get $39.00. so not much difference between the cert. and non-cert. subs.
Sandy/K/Mo - here you only need 60 college hours
Emu - WE hire anyone that has 90 or more college credit hours
Sandy/K/Mo - no difference in the pay between cert and noncert.
Janet/Ar - Jennifer, yes it is a very diverse area to work and makes for a non-boring day for sure.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - one of the districts up here (on a reservation) hires anyone with a HSD who is willing to take the abuse
Janet/Ar - In Arkansas you just have to have a high school diploma.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - no one else will sub there
Janet/Ar - Why is the abuse tolerated there, Jennifer?
Emu - How do you teachers feel about no having a 'certified' teacher/sub in your rooms?
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - it's good pay for someone who only has a hsd
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - the certified subs go there once...then usually never again
Mary K&1 - In PA, Subs have to be certified, so I've no experience with noncert. Subs
Janet/Ar - Emu, the reg. teachers here prefer them due to them being able to complete and do the lesson plans they leave.
Kat/kathleen - Emu, I can think of a case when the uncert. person was terific, but culdn't sub anymore because of new regs..but that was kindergarten. I think in genreal they should be experienced or ceritfied..but a college degree in anything doesn't helpmuch
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - it's only been recently that WI changed the rules and allowed noncert subs
Janet/Ar - I make sure I complete all the work left.
Emu - hmmm....i am not certified yet...but i get the lessons done too
Mountainette WV - If we can't get a sub, the special area teachers fill in - after that we double up classes
Sandy/K/Mo - I have had certif. teachers not do as well as a non certif. depends on the person
Kat/kathleen - I think there could be exceptions made in the cert. requirement when warranted
Janet/Ar - Emu, the teachers here have had problems with subs completeing the work.
Emu - i agree with you Sandy...i have seen some horrible teachers!
Sandy/K/Mo - most of the time we double up especially if it is only going to be an hour or two
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - I think on a short term basis (a day here and there) it's not bad if the person can work with kids
Emu - janet...really? either i have it easy or i am preetty good *S*
Janet/Ar - I agree too. I am going on what I hear here in the dictrict I sub for.
Janet/Ar - Yes, Emu it is true.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - we have a lot of cert subs who have been waiting for openings for years, and because they are such lousy teachers they will be waiting even longer
Emu - I talked with a fellow student one day who subbed....I hope he never gets a job....was talking about doing his homework while the kids 'played' around....
Emu - didn't bother w/the lesson plans!
Kat/kathleen - Emu, that is not a good sign
Janet/Ar - Thank you everyone for showing up to the Substitute Teachers Meetings. Emu, you are an exception to what I have heard here.
Emu - Not at all...was very angry...casue it is people like him that gives us bad names
Emu - Janet...thanks, *S* (i htink? *S*S)
Sandy/K/Mo - one year I had an aide, she was in her last year of teaching ed. and she would do anything but help. Principal was great friends with parents wouldn't do anything
Kat/kathleen - Janet, thank you for doing such a wonderful job preparing and leading the meeting, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR JANET, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - once of the guys from my school that student taught last semester got involved with one of the student's parents...and this clown actually got a job cause he has coaching
Emu - HAPPY BIRTHDAY Janet!
Sandy/K/Mo - Happy Birthday Janet :-)
Janet/Ar - I was being very sincere to you Emu, you have a lot to offer the profession of teaching and I wish you well with your classes.
Jennifer/SpEd/Wi - happy birthday Janet!
Kat/kathleen - Jenn, that's another horror story :-(
Sandy/K/Mo - Night everyone :-)
Mary K&1 - Yes, thank you Janet and Happy Birthday again to you, now go grab a piece of cake for me, OK?
Kat/kathleen - Good night, all thank you (stay as long as you wish to talk about substitute teaching :-)
Janet/Ar - Thanks everyone I appreciate that I wish you all were her to have cake with me.
Janet/Ar - Bye everyone and THANKS!!!
