david - Hi Stanley. Do you chat on here often?
Stanley - I try to make every SubChat, David. Do you sub?
david - No, I've never been on here before.
david - Where are you from?
Stanley - Greetings, Melissa!
Stanley - San Diego, & you? Do you teach?
david - I'm from Canada.
david - I often visit a Canadian education website, "Teach Canada" but it doesn't offer any chat facility. I think it's just being developed.
Stanley - Subs are called Supply Ts in Can, right?
david - Ya, that's right.
Stanley - Melissa, do you sub?
Magoo, late again! - ***puff, pant, wheeze*** sorry!! I keep forgetting about the time difference....it is about 6:15 here. And..........about 103, gag!! AND, my stupid machine isn't working too well, so I may have to leave sooner than I'd like. But, "HI!!"
Melissa - nope I teach kindergarten but thinking about quiting my job and going back to subbing
Stanley - Magoo! Are you now officially on vacation?
Magoo, late again! - Stan, yup---the second session of summer school starts in 3 weeks.
Stanley - Melissa, why leave a contracted position? Is it the wee ones, or just the pressures in general?
Magoo, late again! - Melissa, K is a tough grade, I think............they are SO young!! Also so small.....when I sub K, I have to be very careful not to squish any kids.
Magoo, late again! - Stanley, how goes the Battle of the Eyes???
Stanley - Magoo, they SPLIT the summer sessions?!?
Melissa - i teach in a private school and I thought maybe it would be my way into a public school
Melissa - maybe find a long term sub position
Melissa - I love kindergarten, but I am not happy with my school at the moment
Magoo, late again! - Yup, they split it. I love it!! They go 4 days, then 4 days, then are off for a month, then repeat the schedule. And, they don't start right away, they wait a week after school is out.
Stanley - I don't see as well out of the left one as I'd like, but it IS doable -- & in 13 or 14 more months I'll get another refraction.
Melissa - cool, year round magoo?
Magoo, late again! - Melissa, I'm in Washington state, where are you??
Magoo, late again! - Nope, this is just the summer sessions.
Melissa - New Jersey
Melissa - oh
Magoo, late again! - Stanley, you have really been thru it with those peepers!!
Magoo, late again! - "...from sea to shining sea..." I have never been to NJ..........
Stanley - Melissa, generally speaking, I think it is TOUGH to move directly from a private to a public contract.
Magoo, late again! - So, I'm curious, what's the prob with private school???
Melissa - The pay is better in public and that is my dream
Stanley - Speaking of NJ, Jill & Happy Sub are from there, right?
Melissa - also I am not happy with some administrative changes for next year plus the commute
Magoo, late again! - I shall return................
Melissa - I think it might be time to give it a try but I am scared and unsure
Melissa - it seems like this is a year of change for me so i still have time to decide
Stanley - If I might ask, what are you earning there? If I had gone to Los Angeles July 1st, I'd apparently have been @ 53K [though it tops @ the mid 60s].
Melissa - but other people have said if you are a really good sub they will want to keep you as asub and not hire you in the district
Melissa - right now I am making thirty two after eight years of teaching, only four at this school
Melissa - wb magoo
Melissa - I also want to be closer to home and my dream is to teach in public school
Stanley - Melissa, what you said CAN be an issue in smaller districts, OR if you've some particular skills. [E.g., I speak enough Spanish to sub, but NOT for a bilingual credential.]
Magoo - Melissa, I think that is true to some extent. I have subbed for 8 years, and I do like it, but the one time a job that I was interested in opened up, I kept hearing, "Oh, we don't want to lose you, you're such a good sub"............well, dandy, only how about what I want??
Melissa - so that is the only reason I hesitate
Magoo - I don't even know what starting pay is in this district. Sub pay stinks, it's only $80/day, and, of course, no benefits.
Stanley - Melissa, IF you'd be willing to relocate to Los Angeles, you'd be in the low 50's -- if not more [based upon post grad units.]
Melissa - that is the really bad part, no benifits
Magoo - Melissa, how long/far is your commute??
Melissa - ok, I will pack my bags
Magoo - Hi, Pat!! Worm your way on in and join the gang!!
Stanley - Hola, Pat!
Melissa - it is over an hour but I do take the train
Melissa - My life is up in the air I am still praying that I might get a public school job it is still early
Pat the Bookworm - Hello everyone from southern Illinois.
Magoo - Oh, good grief!!! You have a 1-hour commute, two hours total, every school day????? Bummer!!!
Melissa - My current efforts to get a public school job closer to home are not working so maybe subbing is the answer
Stanley - Speaking of worms… ONE of these days it's gonna happen to me with the apple I tend to eat @ lunch
Melissa - yes
Magoo - Pat, how southern in Illinois??? I've got relatives in Mt. Carmel.
Melissa - so you see why I might not want to go back plus wiht the other issues
Melissa - he,he
Melissa - My problem is I don't know the right people
Magoo - Melissa, then I won't tell you that to get to the school where I sub the most, takes me about 5 min. from my house........
Magoo - Sometimes I walk, that takes me 20 min. It's almost exactly a mile.
Melissa - you make me ill
Stanley - Melissa, I would not even THINK of > 30 mins each way. [The 2 schools where I sub the most are each about 10 mins away.]
Melissa - magoo afther eight years are you itching to get a permanent position or are you happy subbing
Magoo - Sorry!!!
Pat the Bookworm - I alllm currently in Sparta, but until October I lived in Fairfield which is 30 miles from Mt. Carmel.
Melissa - I am thinking that it is no longer worth it but I am scared to quit without a safety net
Melissa - I am in Sparta also but NJ
Stanley - Melissa, knowing the "right" people is **EVERYTHING**, IMO!
Magoo - I am pretty happy subbing by now. I would love to have more $$ and the health ins., but I DON'T want the grades, snotty parents, committees, meetings, etc. Plus, my age (59) is DEFINITELY against me!!
Melissa - YEP
Melissa - I am only 29 so I still have a way to go
Melissa - it would be a lot less stressful
Magoo - I've been thru Sparta many times. Our neighbors used to go to a dentist there....we lived in St. Louis....have NO idea why they went so far for that..........family member or something.
Pat the Bookworm - I am sorry about that weird spelling of am. Sometimes my fingers hit the wrong key.
Melissa - and maybe a long term sub position may come along that could turn into something else
Magoo - My hubby will retire in 20 mos. (but who's counting), and things are very, very tight, but, like I said, my age is against me. Besides, I am not fit for anything other than schools!!!
Stanley - Melissa, I'm 55, & my comments are somewhat like Magoo's. However, I "should" be able to land something in Los Angeles next yr, & that's probably what I'll do.
Melissa - good for you stanley
Melissa - why what is going to happen next year
Magoo - 29.....29.....I was 29 once.....many, many moons ago..............
Melissa - I hope I am not to old yet he,he and that is against me he,he
Magoo - My kids are 30 and 32............
Pat the Bookworm - Did you know the movie in the Heat of the Night was filmed in Sparta?
Melissa - I also think that a district can get an experienced teacher and pay them starting salary
Melissa - yes
Stanley - Melissa, not ALL districts are quick to "roll" long terms into something permanent. [E.g., here in San Diego it tends NOT to happen...]
Melissa - magoo could be my mom he,he
Melissa - how come
Melissa - stanley, in your opinion do you think I should take the chance
Magoo - Yuppers, Melissa, I sure could be! Hubs and I celebrate our 38th anniv. in Sept. ***did you wash your hands before supper, dear?*** ***now, don't go leaving your jacket on the couch again***How am I doing??
Melissa - New Jersey
Robert - Hi Melissa &Magoo I'm In San Antonio Tex.
Melissa - he,he pretty good
Melissa - my parents are also married that long
Stanley - [Staying with the theme] Roberto, buenos noches. Estoy en San Diego. ?Estás un maestro suplente?
Melissa - I have two brothers one 35 and one 37
Melissa - English please
Robert - I'm 60 married 35
Melissa - hi maestro
Maestro - Hi
Magoo - I knew it, I just knew it. Hubs is messing with a dead battery, and my 'expert' assistance is required..............***sigh*** so, toodles all, hope we all get huge raises this fall!!
Melissa - he could be my dad he,he
Melissa - ta ta
Robert - Hi Maestro, where is all the Substitute Talk tyhat's why I came here.
Stanley - Melissa, How MUCH of a pay hit would you take? [E.g., I earned 25K last yr subbing, though I had to work 200 days for that. MANY private schools wouldn't have paid me THAT...]
Maestro - Does everybody like subbing?
Pat the Bookworm - I will be 55 in October. I am happy subbing .Since my husband and I manage a motel, we usually take time off on weekdays. By subbing I can keep some days open for day trips or vacations without asking the schools for time off.
Melissa - the sub chat is they are trying to help me decide if it is worth quitting my job to go to subbing to get a public school job
Maestro - Is long term subbing better paid than regular teaching?
Melissa - I think I am the youngin here tonight
Stanley - Robert, you're "living" it…Any specific questions?
Melissa - I made 32 this past year but that is only because I am lower school lead teacher and that pays and extra 4000
Robert - Stanley what state were you subbing in that you got that much money?I subbed more days and did'nt get close to that.
Melissa - how do you sub 200 days? We only have 180 here
Robert - no no questions just wondered what you all wpuld talk about.
Melissa - plus I figure in the cost of comutting
Stanley - Long terms here in San Diego tend to pay but 12-15% more/day -- **NOT** worth the additional time requirement [unless there are OTHER factors @ work...]
sandteach6 - Hi, everyone!
Melissa - over 200 dollars a month times 10 months
Maestro - Hi sandteach6
Stanley - Pat, your situation sounds "IDEAL" for a "career" Sub!
Robert - I did many long terms one the whole spring semester, class plans, tests, etc. etc. etc.
Melissa - yep
sandteach6 - Hey, Stanley. This desert dweller is coming your way next Monday.
Robert - not if I beat you there desert dweller!
Stanley - Melissa, I've done as many as 237! [The trick is being in multiple districts on different schedules, OR working for a year around, MULTIPLE-tracked district.]
Melissa - we don't have any year round in NJ
Stanley - Melissa, in that 25K I also "lucked" into 14 days of intercession @ SUBSTANTIALLY more $$/day.
Melissa - cool
KRice - Hi Melissa
Pat the Bookworm - Yes,the main drawback to the motel is living where you work. Even though we close the office at ten p.m. , we are on call all through the night for late check-ins, irate guests, etc,
sandteach6 - We are going to stay right on the ocean, Pacific Beach, for 1 week. Get out of the heat here in Phx. and the monsoons.
Robert - a school in San Diegon is looking for English teacher for non natives.I'm applying Stanley.
KRice - Sorry if this takes me a minute, its my first time.
Stanley - Melissa, so you'd ONLY take a hit of 2K to switch? If so, I'd say that's a GOOD gamble…
Melissa - yep, but I would also have to pay for my own insurance
Stanley - sand, You're a "Zonie," right? [A POX upon your Diamondbacks, ya' hear?]
Melissa - I still have a month before I have to really decide
Robert - Your first time in front of all of us KRice
KRice - I hear ya Melissa. I actually have Cobra right now and its costly my fortune!
KRice - Yes Robert
Melissa - stanley, how come in San Diego they don't roll over long term subs into permanent postions
Robert - where from KRice?
Stanley - Robert, where are you NOW, & what district are you talking about?
Melissa - basic plan is usually about 3000
sandteach6 - Hey, Diamondbacks. Did you hear that they had to close Sky Harbor Airport for 16 hrs. last night? High winds up more than 70 mph.
sandteach6 - Alot of destruction.
Robert - San Antonio,Tex my district San Antonio Indepn. Sch. Dist.
KRice - I'm in Santa Clarita-Magic Mountain
sandteach6 - How many of you want full-time positions?
KRice - Southern California that is-north of LA
Robert - Me sandteach6
Stanley - Got me about the tactic here in San Diego, Melissa. There is HEAVY recruiting done out of state -- but to **SAVE $$**, <b>NOT</b> because there are insufficient LOCAL applicants.
sandteach6 - How long have you been trying, Robert? There are jobs here in AZ.
KRice - Any of you ever subbed or taught in LA unified?
Robert - stanley I don't know the dictrict in San Diego, got job notice off the site job search.
Stanley - Robert, Los Angeles Unified SHOULD also have things. Moreover, it TENDS to be lucrative because they give you LONGEVITY credit for subbing!
sandteach6 - No, I taught here in Phoenix.
Robert - sandteach6-problem,I have M.Ed.-Counseling but not certifed,7 yr. sub. retired Juv.Prob.Off.
KRice - True-although some of the surrounding districts have the same things plus better pay, but of course cost of living is much higher here in Sunny Cal!
Pat the Bookworm - I must go lock the swimming pool for the night. I will be right back.
sandteach6 - I know there are jobs in the schools for prevention teachers, etc. I don't know what the pay is. though.
Stanley - KRice, I'm curently eligible for a contract in LAUSD. However, I'm looking to make the move prior to 7/03.
KRice - Make a move where?
sandteach6 - Stanley, where are you moving to? LA??
Stanley - KRice, do you know for a FACT that districts near LAUSD give longevity credit for subbing? If so, any idea which ones?
Robert - anyone from Las Vegas or Denver,Colorado,Iwould go there also have sons there.
Robert - Good question stanley.
sandteach6 - Robert, Las Vegas is really growing. I have heard from others that the school districts there have a shortage (??). That might be a possibility.
Stanley - KRice & sand, SPECIFICALLY to the Bell/Huntington Park/South Gate region of L.A. I've been subbing bario schools here in San Diego, so why not THERE -- for twice the $$??
KRice - You, I'm not sure but depending on whether your looking for multi or single subject-check out William S. Hart for single and Saugus Union/Newhall Union for multi
Robert - yes,if you are certified. They told me there they don't use too many subs just last month when i was there and subs have to pay $150. to be on rolls and take cources!
sandteach6 - I have been reading your posts on the sub board, Stanley. You have mentioned the fact the pay is really good. I looked at the pay scale for subs there. What is it per day? Alot of $$.
Stanley - KRice, THANKS![I'm multiple subject CLAD with an English supplemental. Plus, within the yr I should have a GATE certificate.]
KRice - I don't know how far north you're willing to go, but you might also want to look into Bakersfield. They have a reputation of being a tough area and could use the guidence of someone who has your training and experience.
sandteach6 - Hi, laurap. Just read your posts on the chatboard a little while ago.
laurap - Hi stanley... hi everyone
Robert - sorry-COURSES
laurap - hi sandteach
Robert - Hi laurap,where from me S.a.Texas
laurap - the first post was actually a desperate search for info for a class i'm taking.... and the second one was to procrastinate!!!!!
laurap - hi robert.... i
laurap - am from northeastern ohio
Stanley - sand, LAUSD pays subs something like $150/day or $200/day -- for "certain" schools. [Hmmmm… war zones, perhaps?]
Stanley - laurap, how long before you start up again? Plus, how are the coursed going @ Notre Dame?
Robert - WAR zones for sure.I don't want that anymore that's why I only did El. this last two yrs.
Stanley - KRice, do you sub in Santa Clarita?
laurap - my region pays $55 to $75 per day... pretty sad.... much as i loved subbing, i am glad to have a decent income again!
sandteach6 - When I think that I did a long term in 1st for 6 weeks and got $85 for the first 10 days, and then $95 for the rest. No retro pay, either. Long term is really alot of work. They need to pay people the money for the work involved.
Robert - you teach what laurap?
sandteach6 - laurap, where in Ohio? How far from Cleveland?
Robert - I got $80. for first 10 days and than $87. a day.
KRice - I sub all over. I'm in all the districts. I sub in the elementary schools and the high schools. I try and stay away from the jr. highs!
Stanley - sand, IMO there **HAVE** to be "other" factors @ work before one takes on a long term. [E.g., perhaps wanting to "flex" your wings?]
laurap - 30 miles east of Cleveland.... are you from around here?
Stanley - KRice, so you sub in LAUSD, too?
laurap - Robert, i teach 8th graders with learning disabilities... i am certified to teach English, 7 - 12 but am teaching LD with temp cert while pursuing my licensure
KRice - No, I haven't been brave enough to sub in LAUSD. Thats why I was asking about it. Have you?
sandteach6 - laurap, I grew up in Lorain County. Graduated from Bowling Green many yrs. ago. Hubby graduated from Kent State in 1970, year of the shootings. He saw it.
laurap - i subbed for 7 years prior to being hired
Pat the Bookworm - I am back . The sub pay here is 65 dollars a day.
laurap - sandteach, wow, small world.... I am Kent State '77
laurap - where are you now, sandteach?
Robert - WoW! where Bookworm, get out of there!!!
Stanley - KRice, I'm in San Diego, so I'll **ONLY** move to L.A. if I've a contract in hand. However, surely some parts of the Valley couldn't be that bad?!?
KRice - The pay here is between $105 and $120 a day
Stanley - Robert, you "only did E1?" What's that, first grade?!?
laurap - when i arrived at KSU in 73, the killings were still fresh and it was part of the culture... it's amazing to go back now, or to read about Kent and hear that no one (or almost no one) cares...
Robert - first to fifth I had a fifth grade class long term
KRice - They aren't. The city I live in is really nice and is made up of five different districts. Very low on crime and lots of community and family involvement. So LA in general isn't all bad.
sandteach6 - Stanley, I changed districts in mid-year last year. I had turned down the job twice, but they kept asking and I said yes. For me, I wanted to get my foot in the door at this particular district, so I did it. I really look back and see that I had nothing to prove.
Stanley - Robert, about pay… Unless I'm mistaken, there are still some parts of the Deep South paying in the $40s/day!!
Robert - I;m pending an interview for first grad at a New Horizon School so have to find some Educ. Theory to throu out some good stuff.
sandteach6 - laura. I was there that weekend at Kent, also. I had left on that Monday morning for Lorain, since I was teaching 5th grade. I was there for the weekend.
KRice - N-E Way, gotta go, but its been fun. Thanks and take care!
Stanley - sand, as a retired T, I **TOTALLY** agree you had nothing to prove!!
Robert - Okla,Louisisana, probably
Stanley - KRice, enjoyed chattin' with ya'!
laurap - it still amazes me that it happened at all.... can't imagine it happening today.... i remember my american history teacher (i was in 10th grade, i believe) holding up the front page of the Plain Dealer, with the picture of Jeff in pool of blood.... this teacher was an old guy and an army vet who lost a leg in WWII, and he was crying and saying, look at this... look at this...look what they did to these kids...
Robert - By stan
Stanley - Robert, have you checked out the interview questions in T.Net's lesson archives? They're QUITE extensive!
Pat the Bookworm - I have a sick mother in a nursing home. She is already a 2 hour drive from here. I am trying to get closer to her. I have 40 acres of land in Wayne County. If I had enough money I would set up a double-wide on it.
Robert - yes i got them stan they are good thanks hope to see u soon here again
sandteach6 - Right, Stanley. I taught school in Ohio for 4 yrs. before moving to Phoenix. Then I taught 28 yrs. here. I purchased my 4 yrs. in OH, and got credit for 32 yrs. of teaching from Arizona State Retirement System. So, last yr. was my first year working part-time. I do like subbing.
Stanley - I "try" to make every month, Robert. Plus, I also try to make the Beginning/New T Chat earlier in the month.
Robert - ok stan goodnight also laurap,pat,sandteach6.
Stanley - sand, I would think but a "few" days out should **PROVE** you'd figured out what it "takes" to Sub!
laurap - 'night, robert...
Stanley - Pat, my dad is 84 & in EXCELLENT health. However, if something were to happen to him, my anticipated move to L.A. would become **VERY** problematic…
sandteach6 - Oh, yes!! Subs love going to my old school where I retired from. In this district closer to home, many teachers had no lesson plans, seating charts, etc. Also, I never realized how "cruel" contract teachers act toward subs, until I came to the chatboard.
Stanley - Robert, **BEST** of luck on the interview!!
laurap - well, 6am will come sooner than i wish it too... i have a class in the a.m..... good night pat, sandteach, robert.... good night dear stanley... email me sometime... wonder how Pambre is doing? and i wonder if anyone knows whatever happened to Ann R.... i will email you and we can "reminisce"
sandteach6 - Nite, Robert. Good luck.
sandteach6 - Take care, laurap. Root for those Indians!!
Stanley - sand, virtually 100% of my jobs are secured in advance. Therefore, I've been left without plans <1% of the time!![Sometimes I feel what I do isn't even "true" subbing… ]
laurap - oh those poor Indians.... this town just never seems to get the champion team... always a bridesmaid, never a bride so to speak..... good night all...
Pat the Bookworm - Good night Robert and Laurap.
sandteach6 - It really is something to hear about subs, and how hard it is to get a job. It is too bad that many don't relocate. I know because of family, committments, etc., but it is heartbreaking to hear so many go through so many interviews, and no perm. job.
Stanley - Hola, zeta!Do you sub?
sandteach6 - Hi, zeta! Welcome to our chat!
Stanley - Pat & sand, are you subbing right now, or are your districts shut down?
zeta - no, i getting ready to start my first year teaching special education
zeta - thank you sand
Pat the Bookworm - School is out here for the summer.
sandteach6 - The district here by my house starts back up on Aug. 1st.
Stanley - zeta, laurap, who just logged off, is a SPED T @ MS who just finished her 2nd yr.
zeta - someone told me to sub before I taught, but I didn't feel subbing was long term
sandteach6 - I haven't subbed since May 16th.
zeta - is it a convience to sub
sandteach6 - Good luck, zeta. Did you recently grad. from college?
Ruff - Hi gang, how's everybody doing?
Stanley - sand, your part of AZ starts Aug 1? [Of course, since EVERYTHING has A/C, I suppose the fact that it's summer doesn't matter, does it?]
zeta - no i am working on my masters in special ed
zeta - hi ruff, all is well
Stanley - Ruff, how are things up Vista way? [Ruff & I live, what, about 60 miles apart?]
Pat the Bookworm - If all goes as planned I will be visiting my mother tomorrow and also watching the harness racing at the county fair in Fairfield.
Ruff - Hi zeta, I give you credit in being able to work with the SPED group. Stanley, believe it or not we just had a sprinkle!!
Stanley - zeta, I think subbing [or perhaps working as a T/A] are **THE** best things one can do before student teaching. What think the rest of you?!?
sandteach6 - Hi, Ruff!! I can't wait until next Monday. A week right on the sandy beach in Pacific Beach!! Stanley, my old district starts Aug. 22 or 23. Out here, the schools get a week off in Oct. for Fall Break, 3 weeks for Christmas, etc. Starts early, and ends like May 23.
zeta - thank you i love working with persons with special needs, what do you do
zeta - t/a is teaching assistant right
Stanley - Ruff, I *CAN* believe it, because [for us] it's been a muggy one…[Are we **SPOILED**, or what? ROTFLMAO…
]
Ruff - I sub two or three days a week just about any subject in middle and high schools. I love it!
zeta - i'll be back
sandteach6 - Ruff, you are not working much now, are you?
Ruff - Stanley, I had to go outside and make sure it wasn't a faulty sprinkler! By the way my son saw a 7' Western Diamond Back Rattler yesterday.
Stanley - zeta, yes T/A = teaching assistant.
Ruff - Sandteach...I taught one day last week and today. No other jobs scheduled yet for July.
sandteach6 - My problem is that I am certified, and can go back into the classroom this year, after having 1 yr. off. I really like working 2-3 days a week, but they need teachers and subs so bad.
Stanley - Arrrrrgh… snakes………I subbed Elementary PE today, so spent the A.M. outside. Fortunally we were on a bluff with *NICE* air circulation. [Are you familiar with Linda Vista, Ruff?]
Stanley - sand, how is your situation a "problem?" Are you referring to how they'd handle your retirement?
Ruff - Stanley...no I'm not familiar with Linda Vista, but it sounds as if you had a fun day although rather muggy to run around the track! I don't do PE any more.
sandteach6 - Stanley, we are staying at the Surfer Motor Lodge. It is right next to the Blue Sea Best Western. $110 a night instead of $289 a night for the same oceanview.
Stanley - Ruff, it's PE prep, & there was nothing scheduled after lunch. They put me in a prep room stamping books! [I know… "rough" day @ the "shop," right?]
Ruff - Stan...you really take on those tough assignments. I had one with a last period prep but voluteered when asked to take the band class for the 8th period.
Ruff - Sandteach...have you been out here before?
Stanley - sand, I believe I know *EXACTLY* where the Surfer is. Do you know, is it just down the street from the Catamaran? {sp?}
sandteach6 - No, I have been treated really good, by my "old" district and the one right here. I really love teaching, and when I was asked to go back full-time and collect my retirement, it was hard to pass up. I have this fibromyalgia that tires me out at times, and I don't want it to interfere with full-time teaching anymore. I guess it has been hard on me to not have my own class anymore. Also, I retired younger than most veteran teachers.
Stanley - Ruff, the same T will use me Thurs & Fri, also -- same set up, plus they're the LAST 2 days of school there. Then, on Wed I've a "minimum" day assignment there… Think I can handle such a "stressful" wk?
sandteach6 - Yes, Stanley, it is real close to the Cat. This motel doesn't have air like the Best Western, but we will have a full ocean view room on the 3rd floor. Usually, a-c is not needed by the ocean.
Ruff - Stan...sounds great. It is nice when you develop a following that always call for you. After 6 years now it really keeps me as busy as I want to be.
Stanley - sand, the FLEXIBILITY of subbing is **HARD** to beat. Of course, when you're used to a more ongoing, "deeper" relationship with children…
sandteach6 - Ruff, I read your messages all the time, on the sub and retired board. You give such encouragement to many people. I have started emailing el ed, who has cancer to deal with.
Stanley - sand, A/C should **NOT** be necessary THERE!E.g., virtually NONE of San Diego City Schools has A/C, & some of those are 15 mi or so inland!
sandteach6 - Subbing is so nice. I don't have the 8 hours of grading and planning on the weekends, district and school meetings to attend and be a member of, etc., etc. I walk in, do a good job, and leave about 30 minutes after the kids.
Pat the Bookworm - I miss having my own classroom , yet I enjoy the flexiblity of subbing.
Ruff - sandteach6 ...sorry to hear el ed is battling the big C. Lots of encouraging treatments going on now. Tell her to keep making every day count and enjoy life. My brother had prostate metastacise to his hip and is now on hormones that have actually reduced the C. His 5 year prognosis is good.
Stanley - Ruff, I second sand's comments about your willingness to encourage/mentor! The SubBoard would be a far, FAR less humane place without your presence!
sandteach6 - Pat, how long were you a contracted teacher?
Ruff - Stan...thanks but you are really in the think of things down there in the city schools. Your experiences have been invaluable to many. I'm spoiled up here with the middle-upper class groups and far fewer problems I'm sure.
Stanley - Today was only my 2nd ever doing PE, both for the same T. I got a **REAL** kick helping several girls with their T-ball strokes!
Ruff - Hi Pat the bookworm...enjoying the summer so far?
Pat the Bookworm - Four years in Illinois, three years in Pennsylvania, and four years in Maryland.
Stanley - Ruff, right now the craziest part is seeing the ANXIETY @ the sites…
sandteach6 - Also, Stanley, you give words of encouragement to so many. Like I mentioned, I have read the chatboards for a couple of years. I knew I was going to sub after I retired, and I read almost all messages posted since then.
Pat the Bookworm - Yes, I am enjoying the summer. We had a great four days in Arkansas at the end of June.
Ruff - Stan...anxiety is right....our district is letting many teacher go. Is that the anxiety to which you refer?
sandteach6 - Stanley, when you mention anxiety, are you talking about subs not getting a job.
Ruff - Pat...sounds like the FM isn't keeping you down...atta go girl!
sandteach6 - ?
Stanley - Ruff & sand, thanks! When I started off I felt pretty much alone -- other than for a T in NC who trains Subs. The SubBoard can be **SUCH** an asset, don't you think?
sandteach6 - Ruff, I don't think Pat has FM. I do! LOL
Ruff - Hi Ressa..where in the world are you? Stan and I are out here in San Diego, CA
Stanley - sand, no, though that **IS** present. San Diego City Schools is being "reformed," & most Ts/site admins(?) feel the tactic are, uh, "heavy-handed," to say the least…
Ruff - Sandteach....opps! I knew I made the mistake after I clicked on Update!
sandteach6 - Ressa, I am here in Phoenix.
Pat the Bookworm - I'm not sure what FM is.
sandteach6 - I have been reading those articles that you have told us about on the sub board.
Stanley - ressa, how long have you frequented the SubBoard, anyway? I know I used to see your name when *I* first found it!!
ressa - Sorry I got lost. I am in Oregon, Eugene.
ressa - I've been around for several years. Ever since I found this wonderful resource!
sandteach6 - Pat, FM is fibromyalgia. It is like rheumatism. I don't look like I have anything, but muscles, joints, are inflammed most of the time.
Stanley - sand, you're referring to the articles about the sub shortage? If so, that's but a small, **SMALL** tip of the iceburg!!
ressa - sandteach6, What is fibromyalgia, exactly?
sandteach6 - Also, Stanley, alot of politics. Right??
Ruff - ressa...One of the few states I've never visted. Any of those recent forest fires affect you?
Stanley - sand, very, **VERY** contentious stuff! [If you wish, send me an e-mail via the "hot" link in my posts. I've LOTS of stuff I could send you!]
sandteach6 - It is inflammation of the joints, soft tissue, etc. I also have some arthritis. Not much, but can be a pain. For me, I have always been really motivated, etc. It has slowed me down a little. Some people are in walkers, wheelchairs. I am not like that at all.
ressa - No. I 've been in California with my family -- sort of a working vacation -- for the last five days and only heard about the fires last evening when I took the time to watch the news while lounging in Napa.
sandteach6 - Hi, steph!! It is so nice to talk to another desert dweller.
Ruff - Hi Steph...how have you been? Any jobs lately?
Stanley - ressa, isn't Sub pay in OR determined via an act of the state legislature? And, isn't it something like 80 % of the average beginning T salary?
steph - I am off for the summer and going to school!
sandteach6 - steph, did the storm do damage to your place last night? None out here.
Stanley - ((( steph ))), GREETINGS!! How is your course work going?
Pat the Bookworm - Sandteach, I am sorry you are suffering. I feel very blessed with my health.
Ruff - ressa...Napa...my old stamping grounds...I used to teach full time in Novato and often spend time with family in Napa.
steph - No, we were okay, but my husband had to fly to Seattle today and his flight was 1 1/2 hrs delayed
steph - School is going well, finished Biology first session, now Anthropology.
sandteach6 - Thanks, Pat. I am really doing better than most. That is one of the reasons I decided to retire when I did.
Stanley - ressa, as the former wine buyer for my family's (ex)restaurant, I **HAVE** to ask: What wineries have you visited?
steph - After Fall semester, I will transfer to ASU West into the teacher prep. program.
ressa - Stanley, I am not sure about all the nitpicky stuff and legislative things when it comes to salary but yes it is based on a percentage of the reg. pay. But if that average goes down so does our daily rate. In addition, we can only get a raise if the state average increases. That is according to our contract here in 4J.
Stanley - Ruff, do you know what "novato" means in Spanish?
Stanley - steph, so then how long before you're credentialed?
Ruff - Stanley...when I was there I remember being told "land of hills"...is that what you heard?
steph - After I'm in the teacher prep. program, two years.
sandteach6 - steph, when you go to ASU West, 1 block away is the school I taught at for 222 yrs.
ressa - Stanley, I am not much of a wine drinker -- makes me sleepy and stupid. My personal fav is King, Pinot Gris. I believe that is the one they make. An Oregon winery. I love it with almost anything.
sandteach6 - 22 yrs. LOL!!!
steph - I am looking forward to this fall, because I will be taking mostly education courses, so it makes it seem closer!
Ruff - Go Go Steph...glad to hear your on schedule...and good luck with the classes.
Stanley - Ruff, my restaurant employees used it for "rookie" as in a 1st yr whatever…
steph - Thanks, Ruff.
ressa - We did not do the winery thing. My husband can barely tolerate wine -- he's a hard liqour man -- and my kids are not the least interested in touring or tasting. Party poopers!
Ruff - Hmmm... Stanley...must be a slang term. Never heard that one.
sandteach6 - Will you sub a couple of days per week?
Ruff - ressa....I heard the Sterling Winery was bought out. Have you been on that tour?
ressa - Any of you work summer school? I can't remember which mentioned it on the board.
steph - Sandy, was that to me? I will still be able to sub M-W-F at least for fall semester.
Stanley - Ruff, nope -- I just checked my dictionary, which is for the ENTIRE Spanish speaking world: "beginner;freshman"
ressa - Ruff, you and Stanley make me feel like such a loser since I've never in my 45 years done anything so fun!
sandteach6 - Yes, steph.
ressa - Ruff, don't know a thing about Sterling -- sorry.
Ruff - ressa....although there are summer school classes at the high school, I've never, in 6 years, been asked to sub.
Stanley - Ruff, I never visited -- too busy [& CHEAP!]But I was **GREAT** for the free trade tastings!
sandteach6 - Stanley, we are going to the winery in San Diego. I can't remember the winery off the top of my head, but it was established in the 1890's.
Ruff - Stanley...Novato was the home for the Miwok Indians and Novato was one of their words. Look that up in your Funk 'n Wagnal ....
ressa - Ruff, I think it is some kind of private club here. I never hear of one of the regular subs getting a summer school job. I do know of one sub who also teaches night school who does SS.
Stanley - ressa, what do *I* do that's fun? Seriously………
ressa - Stanley, it has to be more fun than what I do.
Ruff - ressa....I have known 3 subs that got full time jobs in our district just in the high school. It is who you know and how they like what you do.
steph - I am going to have 2 brand new schools to sub in this year, both just built.
Stanley - ressa, as for work, I've yet to stop -- because of year around schools. Starting a week from Fri, however, my options will be severely curtailed. Very likely from Aug to early Sept I'll several days in which no work is offered…
ressa - Tell me about it! If my mother was a teacher or my uncle an administrator I'd be in like 'Flint.'
Ruff - Hi Cindysub....hope you are enjoying the summer so far.
sandteach6 - In Paradise Valley, stephz?
ressa - Stanley, I can see the advantages to that schedule.
steph - 1 in PV, 1 in Cave Creek
cindysub - Hi everyone. I've been trying for ever (over a year ) to get here in time for sub chat. I made it!!!
sandteach6 - steph. (sorry about that--can't type tonight)
Stanley - sand, might that be Ferrara (sp?) in Escondido? Temecula, just to the north of us, has FAR more wineries. [In general, for most varietals, it's just TOO warm in these parts.]
ressa - cindysub, ME TOO!
steph - Okay, here's my exciting news...I'm getting a new puppy!
Ruff - ressa...how long have you been subbing, at what grade and what subjects. Have you approached the principal of your favorite school and tried to make some points? If there are vacancies coming up see whether you can be notified and then go after the position with full power!
sandteach6 - FYI, steph and I are about 40 minutes from each other. Just like Stanley and Ruff.
Stanley - cindysub, are you a West Coaster like most [all?] of us still here?
cindysub - I have been enjoying summer. sleeping in to 9:00 and staying up late.
steph - I know, Sandy, we should "do" lunch sometime...
sandteach6 - What kind of puppy, steph? Don't tell me a weiner dog?? I have 2.
cindysub - Stanley, Yes I'm from Oregon.
steph - She is a bull terrier. My dog, Brownie, also a bull terrier, died a couple of months ago. Very sad time for me.
ressa - Ruff, It is a long story. Unless you are in Eugene you likely wouldn't understand the situation. In most places I hear of your idea would work but not here.
Stanley - ressa, I've worked as many as 237 days in a yr, so I **LOVE** what I have available to me!!
cindysub - Stanley, I read your posts all the time on the board. And Ruff....I've got your sub book.
ressa - Stanley, WOW!
steph - In fact, Stanley, the breeder I am getting her from is over your way, near Escondido.
Ruff - Steph...condolences to you and happy to hear you have a replacement. I hope you go through the terrible twos and get the housebreaking all out of the way with minimal accidents.
ressa - Is this all a West Coast chat?
Stanley - steph, Escondido would probably be about equidistant from Ruff & me. [I live just to the west of Balboa Park, if you're familiar with that.]
sandteach6 - Bernado Winery, Stanley. Had to go look it up.
ressa - Stanley, just thinking maybe I should change my color to green (with envy)
Pat the Bookworm - I am in southern Illinois.
ressa - Pat the Bookworm, GOOD FOR YOU! How is the weather there?
steph - Ha, ha, Ruff, obviously you have never owned a bull terrier (or bully) as we like to call them, very stubborn, headstrong dogs!!
sandteach6 - Welcome back, Pat. Did you sign-off for a time?
Stanley - sand, they make mostly jug wines, if I recollect. While in that area you might want to check out the winery in the San Pascual Valley.
Ruff - cindysub....hi! glad to hear you are still in there kicking! I hope my Sub Guide helped you out. It is now in more than 26 states!
ressa - cindysub, from the P-Town area. Have we 'talked' before?
sandteach6 - What's the name, Stanley? How far will it be from where we will be staying?
Pat the Bookworm - The weather has been in the 80 and 90s. One day was 99.
Stanley - ressa, envious of the opportunities to work?
cindysub - Ruff, I enjoyed your book. Helped me with HS info.
ressa - Stanley, yeah.
cindysub - ressa, I think so.
ressa - cindysub, I thought so.
Ruff - steph....nope...we had and raised Afgans when I lived in Sebastopol, CA. Also have had poodles and min pins and a slew of other animals of all types. We had a mini ranch and kept the 3 kids learning.
sandteach6 - cindy, have you posted on the sub board?
Pat the Bookworm - I didn't sign off just hadn't posted for several minutes.
Stanley - sand, it USED to be called San Pascual Winery -- before it was purchased by a former ambassador to(from?) Argentina. Shouldn't be but 5 miles or so from the Bernardo Winery. [I'll post it on the Sub
sandteach6 - OK, Pat.
ressa - Pat, You know that isn'
Stanley - …Board if I can come up with the name later.]
cindysub - I post on the board occasionally, I have a really slow computer. I mostly read the posts.
sandteach6 - Thanks, Stan. I will look for it.
steph - Ruff, I alway tell my husband I will be the crazy old lady in the neighborhood with the house full of dogs!
ressa - bad. When I was going down the Central Valley in California it was 110.
ressa - Well you all, I am going to sign off for now. Have a good chat.
cindysub - bye ressa
Ruff - steph....enjoy the new puppy...they say it is equal to 1/3 of a human baby in terms of the amount of care required.
steph - You guys realize that I'm really supposed to be doing an article review for my Anthropology class, don't you?
cindysub - s too late!
Ruff - ressa....BYE!
Stanley - ressa, I'm usually earning $115.52/day, so I **ACTIVELY** seek all the work I can get. Takes SOME of the sting out of not being contracted, ya' know?
Ruff - I'm going to call it a day too! See you on the board.
cindysub - i usually don't work from mid june to mid sept. first decent paycheck is at the end of november!!!
Stanley - Ah, yes... Anthro… ALWAYS like stuff like "Transcultural Psychiatry" best. [OK, my secret's outta the bag………]
cindysub - Waaaaaa, I hope everyone doesn't go home : (
steph - Actually my review is of an article in "Skeptic" mag. about "Spin Doctoring the Yanomamo", very interesting!
Stanley - Welcome, TFrazier to the "ongoing" sub chat.Do you sub?
steph - Yes, hi "T"
sandteach6 - Hi, TF
cindysub - Hi TFrazier
Stanley - Yanomano?!? "Mano" = hand in Spanish, other than that………![]()
Pat the Bookworm - Good night everyone. I have enjoyed this chat time very much.
steph - Tribe of Amazon Indians studied by Napoleon Chagnon, apparently a very big name in the Anthropology world...
steph - G'night, Pat.
cindysub - Stanley, what are the little boxes in your sentences?
Stanley - Not to raise a sore point, but the infamous "Sr. Marcos" did anthro research in that neck of the woods -- per his web site!
steph - Oooh, scary thought. Sr. Marcos....
Stanley - cindy, you mean the following: ………… ???
cindysub - where is Sr. Marcos now????
sandteach6 - Where did he go, if we really care?
steph - I think maybe your smiley faces aren't showing up for Cindy.
cindysub - no, there are little boxes with blue, red and green shapes in them.
Stanley - Well, he apparently took offense @ having his web site revealed.
cindysub - Oh there supposed to be smiley faces???
sandteach6 - How do you get smiley faces on the screen?
cindysub - Ahhhhh
steph - Yes, I took a look at the link you posted that time, Stanley, but I couldn't really stomach reading the whole thing.
cindysub - oooppps ....they're
sandteach6 - I skipped over his posts, too.
Stanley - cindy, I agree with steph: I'm on a Mac using Netscape Communicator 4.6. You're probably on a different combination.
cindysub - I read his posts because they seemed real, rather than some people posting nonsense, like what was happening back then too.
Stanley - Let me open another browser & I'll tell how to do the "emoticons." [Magoo is the one who taught ME!]
sandteach6 - I wonder what happened to Magoo tonight? I know she was on earlier, before I came. Maybe, in another room???
cindysub - I'm on a Mac using Explorer at this time.
steph - Cindy, I'm also using a Mac with Internet Explorer 5 and the "emoticons" show up okay for me.
cindysub - I have Explorer 4.0. Maybe that's the difference.
steph - Yeah, that might be it.
Stanley - cindy, is this "room" the right side of a "frame" set-up? If so, look to the left side of the frame, clicking on the question mark. Then, scroll down to the bottom of THAT page.
cindysub - I had been clicking on the boxes, but I just double clicked and saw the smiley face!!!
sandteach6 - I am on a compaq, a pc.
cindysub - No question marks to the left. Just the word "MTG ROOM"
Stanley - sand, Magoo was here earlier. Did she say something about her husband needing her for something???
steph - Cindy, it sounds like you may have graphics turned off in Explorer?
cindysub - Ahhhh I'll check......
Stanley - cindy, I believe I also have an early version of Explorer. Give me a couple to open it, okay?
cindysub - Yup, that did it!!!!
steph - Hey, wouldn't it be nice if ALL problems were so easily solved?
cindysub - Yes
steph - Stanley, we already solved the problem...
steph - Cindy had graphics turned off.
cindysub - Oh Stanley now that you are an Explorer you seem so much more rugged!!!!!
- I have 4.01, & the "emoticon" show up for ME!
funnyteach - hey teaches
steph - Sandy seems to be having some problems logging on.
- "Rugged" Stanley turning back into a whimp……
sandteach6 - Guys, I tried to find the smiley faces like you said, Stanley, and I couldn't get back on here.
- ¡Hasta la vista!
steph - We were wondering what happened to you!
cindysub - My screen just went blank!!!
sandteach6 - I can't get a smiley face tonight. Sorry!!!
steph - You mean the whole screen went blank?
Stanley - Ahemmmmm…… returning to "type!"
sandteach6 - I couldn't get back on. Wonder why the problem??
steph - Sandy, for a plain smiley face, just type a colon, a dash, and right parentheses. like thisand it will turn into a smiley face automatically.
cindysub - Something weird just happened....all the posting is now on the bottom of the screen and I have to scroll to see it since the box is only one inch high. I'm going to log off then get back on....
Stanley - Hey, I think a "funnyteach" could be a DYNAMITE Sub, don't the rest of you?
sandteach6 -
steph - Welcome back, Stanley!
steph - I saw a book about teaching with humor that I would like to get sometime.
sandteach6 - It worked!!! I hope Cindy gets back on with no problems!
Stanley - Thanks, steph? But didn't you see my "Evil Twin?"Also, as for the emoticons, only a FEW seem to work -- at least with MY Mac set-up! [I run OS 8.6]
steph - See, even teachers can always learn something new...
sandteach6 -:-)
steph - Yes, I did see that "explorer" guy...in fact, strangely enough, according to my screen, he is still in the chat room along with "plain" Stanley...
cindysub -
Stanley - steph, SOMEWHERE [sigh… I'm a **HORRIBLE** organizer] I may HAVE the book to which you refer. If so, I'll post the ISBN on the Board sometime…
sandteach6 - I got to the page with all the faces, then got booted off.
steph - Thanks, Stanley.
Stanley - Interest… cuz' I hit the "Logoff" button before quiting Explorer. Perhaps it didn't have time to "take?!?"
sandteach6 - Stanley, how long have you been subbing? I know that you worked with your dad for a long time, right?
steph - Cindy, is your screen back to normal now?
cindysub - I still have to double click to see the faces. I was clicking on one of the boxes when all the words disappeared.
steph - Oh, the Explorer Stanley is gone now, maybe it did just need a little time to update.
Stanley - See, NOW "it's" [um, HE'S] gone. Probably "timed out…"
cindysub - Everything is back to normal, except I don't have to get ready to work tomorrow!!!!! Yippee
cindysub - He's probably off exploring somewhere.
steph - I do have to go to school tomorrow, and the homework isn't getting done, but it's just so much fun to finally get to one of these chats!
Stanley - sand, I'm in year 6 of subbing, & that's 6 FULL years, as in averaging > 200 days/yr. [However, I DID have a "leave replacement" contract for about 100 days of that.]
cindysub - Every other time I came to sub chat, everyone was gone. Wait...one time stanley was here and some other guy from Ca.
Stanley - I've a BG-4 tomorrow @ a school to which I've never been. As 1 of the District's "Focus 1" schools, they actually pay me long term rates for DAILY work there!
steph - Yeah, that's usually what happens to me, I forget about the chat until it's too late.
sandteach6 - You know, Magoo really has shared so much on the chatboard, too. On days when I felt down, she would share on the board how important it is to take a day off, do fun things, go shopping, etc. So often, we get ourselves in such a ratrace, and forget. At least I do.
steph - Stanley, what does "BG-4" mean?
steph - Is it bilingual?
cindysub - I have to work on my sub newsletter which I am fazing out this year because of no interest....especially from school districts. My revised version mailing told me loud and clear that districts do not want to spend anything to support their subs.
Stanley - Magoo **DOES** have a corner on the humor market, no?Plus, though he now posts less often, CURT is **SUPERBLY** funny!!
steph - I think Curt is very funny, I bet he would be fun to work with.
sandteach6 - Stanley, that's great. I hope you get what you want in LA. Yes, Curt does too.
Stanley - steph, yes, my personal for bilingual 4th grade. On the tape they said it was primary, 1-3, so GLAD I called before school was out. They MAY well put me to the test, but, hey, won't be the FIRST time!
cindysub - I have really enjoyed reading the board. Usually the posts are already answered by the experts.
sandteach6 - Cindy, as a classroom teacher for many years, it saddens me when I hear how subs are treated throughout the country. It is hard for me, because this last year, I was treated with royalty.
steph - I have subbed in a bilingual 5th grade class and the kids were great! Plus a small class size. I enjoyed thoroughly and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
Stanley - Ed, this is still Subs chattin' away -- uhm, yours truly for about, ulp, 3 hrs now!
Edu-ward - Hello ..may I join ?
steph - Welcome, Edu-ward!
sandteach6 - Hi, Edu. Where are you from?
Stanley - Hop right in, Ed!
Edu-ward - I am from Brunei and where is everyone located?
cindysub - I have many times been suprized that the reading group I get assigned to is reading in spanish.
steph - I am in Arizona.
steph - Edu, are you a teacher in Brunei?
Edu-ward - I am trilingual myself..how many languages do you speak?
Edu-ward - yes
cindysub - Oregon
Stanley - Steph, this school is amongst the District's lowest performing, & in a sector of the barrio I've not worked. A friend had a VERY difficult upper grade class there a ways back -- & she had a leave replacement contract @ a MS I'd NOT touch!
sandteach6 - Phoenix
Edu-ward - but back to take up mu bachelor in Education in the uni
steph - Unfortunately, I only speak English, but I can fake my way through a little Spanish...
Edu-ward - where are you from Stan?
steph - So you are going to school in Brunei?
Stanley - Ed, San Diego,CA,USA. What 3 languages do you speak?
cindysub - Sand, I was also a classroom teacher for quite a few years. Teaching was a lifestyle, subbing is a job, an important one none the less.
sandteach6 - I sound dumb. Where is Brunei? My hubby and I don't know.
Edu-ward - South East asia
sandteach6 - Thanks.
steph - Wow, it still amazes me that it's possible to "chat" with people all over the world!
Stanley - sand, Don't feel bad: Unless I'm mistaken, it's a relatively new name -- i.e., since my stamp collection days approx 45 years ago!
sandteach6 - Edu-ward, is it now winter there?
Edu-ward - Oh...I can speak English, Mandarin and Malay
cindysub - Where is my stamp collection?????
Edu-ward - lol..Brunei is near the equator there is no season here
Edu-ward - it's humid wet and hot
Edu-ward - 8-)
Stanley - Hmmm... thinking strategy here: Brunei is in the northern hemisphere, though near the equator, right?
Edu-ward - it\s afternoon here
sandteach6 - How do people in your country react to the terrorist threats?
cindysub - Like New Jersey where I'm from???
Edu-ward - Bingo!!!very good Stan
steph - Stanley, you're not looking at an atlas even as we speak, are you?
Stanley - GREAT question, sand!I mean, we are SO spoiled vis-a-vis the REST of the world……
Edu-ward - try this http://brudirect.com
Stanley - ya' callin' me a CHEATER, steph?[But, notice, I DIDN'T answer the question……
]
sandteach6 - Edu, do you substitute now?Got it written down.
steph - Oh, I would never do that, Stanley....
Stanley - Thanks, Ed: I'm loading in another window……
Edu-ward - no ..I am on holiday going back in August to do my final at the uni
steph - After your final, will you have your degree?
cindysub - Gotta go. sorry to miss the geography lesson. family needs the phone. Happy Summer to all. Happy no season to Edu.
Edu-ward - yes...I will and back to be ateacher again
sandteach6 - Take care, Cindy.
steph - Edu, what grade(s) do you teach?
Edu-ward - grae 4-6
steph - That's what I would like to teach, also. Right now I sub in elementary, preschool through grade 6.
sandteach6 - steph, have you taken a vacation this summer yet? We are going to San Diego next Monday for a week right on the beach.
steph - Not really, went to Vegas for a friend's wedding in May, but all my $$ is going to go for the puppy! I don't mind, though, I'd rather have her.
steph - However, I may be going to San Diego to pick her up, but then we would just stay overnight.
sandteach6 - I know what you mean. My oldest doxie is 13 1/2 yrs. My other is 12. The oldest one is now on arthritis med.
steph - Did we lose you, Stanley?
sandteach6 - Where were you, Stanley?
steph - Or is that your evil twin again?
Stanley [otra vez] - Howdy! Had a **BIG** time freeze on the ol' Mac……
sandteach6 - He really had to go get another glass of wine. Right??
steph - Yeah, he's not foolin' anyone...
Stanley [otra vez] - Lost it ALL my friends, & this ol' Performa 6115 with a G3 card has **LOTS** of "stuff" to reload!
steph - Stanley, have you considered upgrading...
sandteach6 - Edu-ward, are you still there? What do people in your country think about all the terrorists' threats, etc.?
Edu-ward. - Are you all sub teachers here?
Stanley [otra vez] - hey, sand, I almost "never" drink unless it's free -- as in "trade tastings." [Talk about having a **SPOILED** palate……]
steph - Yes, you've stumbled into the monthly sub chat...
sandteach6 - Yes for me.
steph - But we
steph - Sorry, I was trying to say we're a pretty friendly bunch, anyway.
Edu-ward. - look at the news athttp://brudirect.com
Stanley [otra vez] - Ed, you & I must be the "boot" twins: Primero yo, y luego tu. [That's Spanish, in which I've been known to dabble……]
sandteach6 - Okay, I'll make you and steph a drink. On the house, of course. Would you like to sing on our karaoke machine tonight, also?
Edu-ward. - how amny language can you speak Stan?
steph - Every now and again, my screen does weird things, then seems to fix itself.
steph - Make mine a margarita, please.
steph - On the rocks.
sandteach6 - I will check out the site that you gave, Edu-ward.
steph - However, I don't think you want me to sing.....
sandteach6 - steph, you can drink, sing, and swim at my house.
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, back to the wine comment: I've been eatin' granola bars ALL evening -- an occasional din-din of mine. I can't even **BEGIN** to imagine wine with THOSE!! [Talk about biological warfare………… ROTFLMAO………… ]
sandteach6 - We love karaoke here!!!
steph - Stanley, I do NOT think that would be a good combo.
Edu-ward. - The news says"Brunei Ruler Condemns All Forms Of Terrorism And Warns People Of Its Great Dangers"
steph - Okay, well, you can drink and swim at my house, but no karaoke.....
Edu-ward. - so ..is that anwer your question ?
sandteach6 - Are you on some diet, Stanley, or is it called lack of $$?
steph - But...we do have a spa, too.
Edu-ward. - sand, karaoke is not new here
Stanley [otra vez] - Ed, I schlep [i.e., slop] along in Spanish -- i.e., I'm a native Engoish speaker. How about you?
Edu-ward. - people here like to sing so far...lol
sandteach6 - Thanks, Edu-ward. I email a retired teacher who lives in Australia. She mentions how she feels s bad for what happened on 9/11.
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, actually the granola bars make for a FAIRLY expensive dinner. It's just that I swam after work today, & I therefore must eat @ the 'puter if I want to do this.
steph - Well, we admire your dedication to your fellow subs!
sandteach6 - Oh, I see what you mean, Stanley.
Stanley [otra vez] - As for the combination, steph, perhaps the UN should be investigating ME for bioterrorism!
Edu-ward. - Stan, sand, steph wht ado you teach?
steph - I substitute teach in elementary, so anything from preschool to 6th grade for me. So far I'm not brave enough to sub Middle School.
Stanley [otra vez] - I've about 1,100 days of subbing experience, about 100 days as a leave replacement T. Less than 100 of those [perhaps 80 or so??] have been @ higher than 5th grade.
sandteach6 - Edu-ward, I taught elementary school, mostly 3rd and 5th grade. I started teaching at 21 and retired last year with 32 yrs. Since, I am "fairly" young yet, I still want to teach, but not on a full-time basis, anymore. At least, I think I will continue subbing, and not going back to full-time teaching.
steph - I am also working toward my bachelor's degree in elem. ed.
steph - Stanley and sandteach are certified teachers.
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, I virtually **NEVER** chat in the MainRoom. When I come here I stay as long as possible. [I like to put more of a "personality" behind my posts.]
Edu-ward. - http://teachers.net/gazette/JUL02/chang.html chech this out
Edu-ward. - myarticle at the Gazette
sandteach6 - I took 27 clock hours the end of June. I want to keep my teaching certificate up-to-date. I also have a sub certificate good until 2099! LOL
Edu-ward. - hope it is suitaable for all teachers
steph - I agree, Stanley, this is the only chat I ever do, and half the time I miss this one! So I like to stay as long as I can, but I really am going to have get to my homework soon. Summer classes are so accelerated!
sandteach6 - The only other chat I do, is the fibro. chat.
Edu-ward. - do youuse msn messenger?
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, over the years I've had more than a FEW summer classes. So I **DO** know what you mean!
steph - Hey, very cool, an author! The article looks very interesting, I will go back and read the whole thing tomorrow.
Edu-ward. - I am not an author..LOL..it was one of my assignments for the uni course
steph - Sandy, I really don't think you are going to want to sub till 2099...
Edu-ward. - So I guess you all are veteran teachers.
steph - Well, you are an author, you are published at teachers.net!!
sandteach6 - I don't think so, either. Isn't strange that the year 2099 is on that certificate??
Stanley [otra vez] - Ditto steph's comment, Ed!You should communicate with Jan Fisher on the Professional Readings ChatBoard!
steph - No, I am not a veteran teacher. I have been subbing for two years while going to school. This is my mid-life crisis where I decided to change careers...
Edu-ward. - am I ? Thanks I got an A- for that assignment...lol
steph - I guess it's like the AZ driver's licenses which are good till you're 65...I think that is so weird.
Edu-ward. - Wh is that Stan?
Stanley [otra vez] - Ed, I'd hesitate to refer to myself as a veteran T -- because to most people that would connote "contracted." However, I'd agree to the veteran Sub part!
Edu-ward. - Who is Jan Fisher/
Stanley [otra vez] - Ed, Jan Fisher is an **EXTREMELY** dedicated staff developer/T trainer out of the Orange County section of CA. Just a sec, & I'll send you the URL of one of her posts.
Edu-ward. - whay not a dpermannetteach?
sandteach6 - Edu-ward, have you always lived in Brunei?
Stanley [otra vez] - Ed, are you asking why I've not landed a contracted teaching position?
sandteach6 - Hi, olive! Where are you from and are you a sub?
sandteach6 - I think that is what he meant, Stanley.
olive - Philippines/economics and history
steph - Hi, olive.
Edu-ward. - yes.Stan
Edu-ward. - Kemusta
sandteach6 - How neat!! This is really interesting that we have 2 people on from across the world.
Stanley [otra vez] - Greetings, Olive! Are you in the P.I.?
Edu-ward. - mabuhay olive
Stanley [otra vez] - Ed, as near as I can tell, I'm in an area where younger, less expensive applicants have the advantage. So, I will probably move to an area where they don't have that luxury!![]()
steph - Stanley, remember, there is a teacher shortage here in AZ!
sandteach6 - There is, Stanley!
steph - Of course, I've pretty much got it figured out that as soon as I graduate, there will be a glut of teachers...
sandteach6 - That's what I was talking about earlier. After a year retired, people like me can go back into teaching, collect their retirement check, and teach. Double dipping, so to speak.
steph - brb
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, yes, but would I be able to start @ 57K -- which is POSSIBLY what Los Angeles would pay me in July of '03? [At age 55, getting "up there" ASAP matters!! ;-0 ]
Edu-ward. - ok I have to go now bye
Stanley [otra vez] - Ed, if you're still there, here's a post by Jan Fisher: http://teachers.net/mentors/profreading/topic616/7.15.02.08.24.49.html
sandteach6 - I think he left quick.
Stanley [otra vez] - ARRRRRRRRGH... can't believe that I **JUST** missed him... BUMMER!!
sandteach6 - Olive, tell us about yourself.
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, even if that scenario DOES occur, your student teaching will probably be **MUCH** better than most of your classmates. Therefore, if **ANY** new Ts are being hired, **YOU** should be in good shape!!
sandteach6 - Stanley, I can't believe that I have been on so long. My carpal tunnel will kill me tomorrow.
Stanley [otra vez] - Hey, sand, I'm @ 4 hours -- just barely! But, what is it they say when you're having fun?!?
steph - I'm back. Well, Stanley, I sure hope you are right. But as we've discussed before, I do think the student teaching part will be a lot easier with the subbing experience.
steph - Also, I've met some wonderful teachers and I'm hoping I will be able to student teach with a "known" mentor when the time comes.
Stanley [otra vez] - **ABSOLUTELY**, steph! Confidence/perspective is the name of the game. You'll have them, & your classmates likely will not.
Stanley [otra vez] - Yup, & I wasn't even considering the "connections!"
steph - Well, Stanley, I'm sure the money here would not even be in that ballpark, but you could swim outside everyday...
sandteach6 - You will, steph. I called up ASU West on the advice of a friend. They need student teacher advisors, someone like me who has the classroom experience and up-to-date teaching style. I was thinking about doing that.
steph - That would be great, Sandy. Maybe you will end up being my mentor, wouldn't that be kick?
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, one of the Ts for whom I sub came to San Diego from AZ -- I'm thinking about 10 yrs ago. Just Fri she told me she made more SUBBING here her first yr than she had as a contracted T in AZ! [Hopefully that "gap" has changed?!?]
sandteach6 - LOL!!! I got a letter a few days ago from my district, Wash. I am called a VIP.
sandteach6 - Here, where we live, Stanley, it is about $85 a day. $30,000 for a beginning teacher. Goes up to $65,000.
steph - Stanley, do you have a Master's?
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, I've more than Master's amount of post grad units, though without the degree. That ALSO doesn't matter that much in LAUSD.
steph - Have you heard anything about a position in LA?
Stanley [otra vez] - BTW, Los Angeles moves you up FAST, though they cap out in the mid-60s after about, I believe, 13 or 14 yrs.
sandteach6 - Same here, Stanley. I have equilivalent to a doctor's degree, but without the degree.
steph - Was that a robot or something?
sandteach6 -LOL
sandteach6 - Olive left really fast, too.
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, I was OK'd to contact Principals in L.A. early in June. However, since the multi-trackers start their school yr in July, I just wasn't ready to move after 45 yrs here. NEXT YEAR, my friends!!
steph - Hey, isn't that what you said LAST year?
Stanley [otra vez] - I entered his URL in another window. We'll see what comes up………
sandteach6 - What do you think about all those people back in Penn., Mich., who can't even get a job after 20 interviews. Teachers must be a dime a dozen, and not willing to move. -
Stanley [otra vez] - I didn't interview with L.A. until mid Oct. Then, I didn't receive confirmation until May! Though I FELT there would be no problem, I just **COULDN'T** motivate myself to do the packing/organizing…[Gawwwwwwwd, do I **HATE** that kind of stuff………
steph - That would be so discouraging. I can't even imagine how tough that must be.
sandteach6 - We moved to AZ when we were in our mid 20's. If I was young and couldn't get a job in my dream career, I would move.
steph - Yeah, moving is the pits, Stanley. After moving here from a house we'd lived in for 15 years, I said I don't want to move ever again!
Stanley [otra vez] - PA Ts perhaps have a BETTER chance in San Diego than do natives!! That's because they get their teaching credentials in 4 yrs. E.g., a recent PA grad will start @ 5K or so less/yr than what I would have to be paid!!
sandteach6 - Before moving out here in Surprise 4 yrs. ago, we lived in the same house for 19 yrs. on 39th Ave. and Bell.
steph - Arizona is also a 4 year state. I was surprised to find out about CA's 5 year credential from a teacher I worked with.
steph - And yet they are recruiting all over the country from what I understand.
sandteach6 - Do you have to go 5 yrs. to get a teaching certificate in CA?
steph - My understanding is that you have to get a bachelors and then another year of teaching classes on top of that...is that right, Stanley?
Stanley [otra vez] - AZ is recruiting all over the country, steph? If so, my guess is because the grads are being "picked off" by places like CA!
steph - No, I meant that California is recruiting. Actually, AZ is probably, too, but that's because there is such a shortage here.
Stanley [otra vez] - BTW, Memmo's URL http://www.workshop-merida.com/goliveingframes.html is "clean," though I'll be darned if my tired brain & funky eyes can deal with EXACTLY what it's about!
steph - It just seems strange that CA will accept a 4 year credential from somewhere else, but require 5 years for their own in state grads.
sandteach6 - The 3 S's are still going strong, but getting a wee bit tired.
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, Yes, virtually ALL CA programs have been 5 yr ones. However, an **ENTIRELY** new credentialing program STARTED going into effect July 1. So, as for the future?!?!?
steph - Yeah, I'm about ready to call it a night. I still need to read a chapter in my Anthro book and work on my review....sigh......
steph - Really, chatting with you guys is so much more fun..
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, **PRECISELY**!! However, here's what REALLY "bugs" me: CA produces enough grads locally, at least the schools in San Diego. However, because they can save money doing so, the Educrats are **ALWAYS** floating the "shortage" issue so they can just
steph - Sandy, do you like it out there in Surprise?
sandteach6 - My hubby came home from work 2 hrs. ago. He has 3 more days of work, then 2 weeks off. I'll be thinking of you when we are on the beach next week, or taking a 2 hr. harbor cruise, or going to the casino or winery. Maybe Old Town to our favorite restaurant, or Seaport Village. I need to get out of this heat!!!
Stanley [otra vez] - …continue to save $$ by going out of state!! IF THE GENERAL PUBLIC ***ONLY*** KNEW……
steph - Is the favorite restaurant in Old Town the Mexican one?
steph - Stanley, maybe you should start a new publicity campaign...
sandteach6 - Thanks so much for those sites on the information concerning teachers in CA. I go often and read some of the state chatboards, mainly CA's.
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, My parents founded the "Hob Nob Hill" restaurant in San Diego. [We sold in '93 because of lease problems.] It's STILL known for its breakfasts!!
sandteach6 - Yes, where they serve the best margaritas.
steph - Sandy, I hope you have a really wonderful vacation. I have been to San Diego but it was years ago. I will definitely go back sometime.
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, Old Town is **LOADED** with Mexican restaurants!!
sandteach6 - I have heard of that restaurant, Stanley.
sandteach6 - But, I know which one she is talking about. The one where you sit outside.
steph - Well, I think it's called the Old Town Mexican Cafe, or something like that. We ate there once a few years ago and then just the other day I saw a story about on the Food Network. Does that sound familiar?
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, The nationally syndicated food columnists Jane & Michael Stern wrote us up back when we owned it. [We went from 1944 thru 10/15/93.]
Stanley [otra vez] - Steph, there's an "Old Town Mx Cafe," though I'll BET sand means "Casa de Bandini."
sandteach6 - I really like Surprise, steph. Of course, we have the retirement areas around us, like Sun City West, and Sun City Grande. But, it is growing so fast out here. Our population is about 55,000 and growing constantly. The ballpark will open across from where our house is. The Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals will do spring training here, starting next year. A new school is built every yr. for the next 7 yrs. or so.
steph - So which is better? (for future reference!)
sandteach6 - Hopefully, the school district will get better, and I think it is starting to.
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, I tend to eat @ a place called "Tio Leos" which is just on the outskirts of Old Town. Heck, should you be interested, I might even be willing to MEET you & hubby there! [Did you get my ph # I sent earlier?]
steph - We are near Cave Creek (out in the boonies of N. Scottsdale), but I love it here where we are. Although we did have a rattlesnake in our backyard just the other day. Puppy will have to be snakeproofed!
sandteach6 - Yes, I did, Stanley. Thank you.
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, the better question: Re Mx restaurants in San Diego, or locations in AZ?
steph - I meant which of the two in S.D. is better, in case we make it over there sometime? I love mexican food.
Stanley [otra vez] - Old Town Mx Cafe has "phenomenal" reviews. However, the one time I was there my family & I were disappointed. I don't think much of anyone here locally likes Bandini's for it's food. Personally, I'd take Tio Leo's ANYTIME!!
sandteach6 - Casa de ?? is the one.
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, yup: Casa de Bandini.
sandteach6 - Stanley, where is Tio Leo's?
Stanley [otra vez] - Leo Sciuto, the founder of Tio Leo's, I know personally as he & his family were long time custormers of ours. I don't think you'd be disappointed with ANY of his 4 locations!!
steph - I will have to try to remember Tio Leo's so we can try it out.
Stanley [otra vez] - sand, just to the north of Old Town. May I post it on the SubBoard?
sandteach6 - Neat!
sandteach6 - My email address is mrmsaz@aol.com
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, earlier I said I'd post something for you on the SubBoard. However, it got erased from my clip board when my 'puter crashed. Help my old brain out: Do you remember what it was?
steph - Well, kids, my teenage son just came home and my husband called to say he made it to Seattle, so I guess I will call it a night. It's been great fun to talk to both of you. Sandy, enjoy the trip, be sure to post a restaurant review when you get back! Stanley, don't work too hard, remember to take some time off now and then.
steph - Stanley, for the life of me, I can't remember, either, but don't worry about it. If I think of it, I'll email you.
sandteach6 - steph, I will have to go, too. Take care and enjoy the rest of the heated summer and monsoons. Nite, steph.
Stanley [otra vez] - steph, LIKEWISE -- about the not working too hard! Speaking of Bandini, my assignment tomorrow is @ Emerson-Bandini Elementary! Think they serve margaritas on the porch?!?
steph - Ha! Wouldn't that be lovely? Goodnight, you two!
Stanley [otra vez] - Ladies, **THANK YOU** for a ****MOST**** relaxing evening!!!
Stanley [otra vez] - ¡Anda con dios, ustedes dos!
Stanley [otra vez] - going, going………
sandteach6 - Stanley, it is probably time to say good-night. I had such a nice time on the chat board. Take care. I may surprise you and leave a message on your machine next week.
Stanley [otra vez] - (((( poof !! ))))
sandteach6 - Don't work too hard. Keep up all those positive comments that you make to those teachers needing advice.
sandteach6 - Nite!
Stanley [otra vez] - THANKS, Y ¡Buenas noches, señora!
Stanley [otra vez] - (((( poof!!! ))))
