Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Janet/AR/Host - Hello! Welcome to the Sub. Teacher's meeting.
Janet/AR/Host - Magoo, are you a sub?
Magoo - Yep, I am a sub, 6 yrs. now, elem. (I don't do much in middle or high school because their hormones are on high and mine are fake and it is not a good combination.
Janet/AR/Host - Does anyone have anything particular they want to discuss about subbing tonight?
Lexus - i have a concern, why do subs receive so little respect from the staff in many of the schools, at least that has been my experience
Magoo - Okay, get ready, I am going to ask a serious question: Janet, how can you sign a contract to teach and they don't tell you which grade you will have???
lee - I agree, Lexus. I noticed it, too. I hope I never become that arrogant.
Janet/AR/Host - Lexus, you are not alone. It is happening all over. That is one reason why there is such a sub shortage. Are you a certified teacher? We get paid $44.00 a day here.
m&m - I would like to know if it's more difficult to get a full teaching job in a district you've been subbing in?
lee - Lexus, I even had a teacher I subbed for long-term behave as though I was going to take her job from her!
Janet/AR/Host - Magoo, On the contract he filled in elem. level/Supervisor of Aftercare program.
lee - m&m, in some districts it is harder, and in some it isn't. I got hired in a district in which I subbed.
Janet/AR/Host - M&M, Yes it is. I was considered a good sub but never got an interview here in the district I subbed for.
Janet/AR/Host - m&m, I finally went to a private school. Second Baptist Christian School.
lee - I think that's a shame, too. I quit subbing in one district because they had that reputation.
Magoo - Oh, little Lexus, you have subbed just 1 year?? Dearheart, it gets better!! There is one elem. school that I work in so much that now (after they got to know me, heh, heh, heh) I even get invited to the Ch. party, etc. They just have to get to know you is all. Plus--a LOT of 'real' teachers do not understand why anyone in their right mind would sub. If they didn't sub before getting a room, they haven't got a clue.
lee - I agree, Magoo. Many of them have no clue, or have forgotten what it was like.
Janet/AR/Host - Private/Parochial school do not pay as much but I have been told less of a headache than public. We will see.
m&m - I felt like I had to beg to get an interview. Personnel was very unhelpful.
lee - Stanley...how is the class?Did they get the letter?
Janet/AR/Host - m&m, I totally understand, I felt the same way here. But glad i made the decision to go to a private school.
Lexus - It is a tough job. I am certified to teach spanish k-12, i received the degree 20 years ago, never taught, but im finding it difficult to find employment now --
Stanley - Keeping me busy, lee! We'll be working with your post cards tomorrow -- finally!
Janet/AR/Host - Stanley, I love these meetings I couldn't go without talking to all my friends here!
lee - Janet, I have talked with a couple people who got hired in private schools, and they seem to love it.
Magoo - $44/a day??!!?? I doubt I'd get out of bed for that. I am LUCKY, because here (eastern WASH), at least in this district, we get $77.50/day. If you sub in the same room for 20 straight days, then on the 21st day, you start earning 'teacher pay', the amount of which depends on how long you have subbed overall.
Stanley - No letter yet, lee.
MissB - I have just retired and am thinking of subbing. What advice can you give to me?
Janet/AR/Host - Lexus, it is very difficult and I know I got down when I wasn't chosen.
m&m - Here in Ca. we get $105 -110/day.
lee - That post office delayed it, no doubt!
Stanley - Janet, they didn't post the announcement of the meeting until late -- yesterday, or perhaps today?
lee - MissB, I think you might enjoy it, especially if you like working with the kiddos. It's flexible, too, no set schedule.
Magoo - Lexus, if you can teach Spanish, you should work for the Peace Corps as a language teacher. When I went thru training (this was before God created dirt, you understand) they had 1 instructor for every 15 of us---it was a GREAT way to learn the language!!
lee - Magoo, that sounds like a great idea. What an opportunity!
Janet/AR/host - Magoo, I doubt if your that old! LOL
Magoo - I did a practicum in a Catholic school and the kids were SO well-behaved. I wonder if it's 'cause their folks say, 'listen you twit, behave because this is costing us a bundle'??
Janet/AR/host - Magoo, yup I am sure they are! ROFLOL
Janet/AR/host - MissB, are you a sub?
MissB - Not yet. It is something I am thinking of doing. I have just retired from the classroom. I loved the kids but hated the idea of schools being run by testing.
Janet/AR/host - My last day at the hospital, after 21 years there, will be July 28th.
Janet/AR/host - MissB, congrats on you retirement.
lee - Wow, Janet. Are they having a party for you? That's a long time to work in one place!
Stanley - MissB, You'll have to keep us informed as to how subbing differs from your contracted experiences!
Janet/AR/host - lee, I think so. They mentioned in a meeting they were gonna have one for me.
MissB - Thank you. It was a tough decision. I think subbing would be an interesting way to keep in touch with what is going on in education.
Stanley - MissB, You can say THAT again re the testing!
lee - Great, Janet! I love parties....and you deserve one!
Janet/AR/host - MissB, subbing is harder but I enjoyed it for sure.
Janet/AR/host - Thanks lee, That was very nice of you to say!
Stanley - 2nd lee's comment, Janet. When do you start @ your school?
lee - It's true, though, Janet...
Magoo - Miss B--Would you be able to work in a school other than the one where you taught?? Methinks it would be tough to sub where you had worked. I know 'real' teachers who love to sub after they retire, and others who 'can't let go' and keep wanting to rearrange the classroom, so I guess it depends on the person. Have you considered tutoring?? Kids in the hospital for a lengthy time, after school and the Boys/Girls Club, etc.
Janet/AR/host - Stanley, School starts Aug. 16th for the students and Aug. 9 meetings thru the 14th then orientation on the 15th.
Janet/AR/host - lee, you are soooooooooo sweet! Thanks.
m&m - Is it more rewarding to teach economically-deprived kids or affluent kids? I'm trying to make some decisions for future work.
Stanley - Magoo, We've a T who retired from our site a few yrs ago. He's now subbing there QUITE regularly! But, in general I feel you raise some EXCELLENT points...
lee - MissB, I told my hubby that he had better have a decnt retirement and we had better have alot in savings, because in 35 years when I retire, I'm done--no subbing or anything! LOL
lee - Janet, you're welcome.
MissB - No, I would not want to sub where I taught. I hadn't thought about teaching kids in the hospital or any of the other options you mentioned. Thanks for the advice.
Magoo - I am chicken to try and make the screen bigger.....with my tech skills, I would be the first person in history to cause a computer to explode, and then I wouldn't even get to see the news report the next day.
Janet/AR/host - m&m, I have a certification in elem ed/spec. ed/ and soc. studies. Spec. ed is where it is right now.
MissB - lee, many of my friends feel exactly the same way!
Stanley - Janet, Our Ss don't even COMPLETE their yr until this Fri!
m&m - Magoo, me too. I did hit the maximize icon at the top and now it's one inch wide instead of a half inch. Ha! Ha!
Janet/AR/host - WOW! Stanley!
lee - m&m, I think it's really hard to say which is more rewarding. I live in a rural area, and subbed in an economically depressed district, and loved it, but it might not be the same in an urban area.
Stanley - I'm hoping to continue right on, either with 1 wk of intercession, or an immediate return to subbing.
Janet/AR/host - GREAT Stanley!
m&m - lee, I'm in an urban area where there are many, many problems. You end up feeling like you're both a parent and a teacher to these kids.
Magoo - Stanley--I did?? I am always surprised when that happens. Miss B--I hadn't thought of the $$ side of all this. Working more or less full time would be better than any after-school set up. Do you live in a large town?? You could start your own tutoring school---after reg. school hours, not day care but really tutoring.
Stanley - I've already got all of NEXT wk in Kinder, so after that we'll have to see how much work is out there.
Lexus - m&m i work primarily in the urban economically depressed areas, there are rewards, but you burn out quickly
Janet/AR/host - Wha Hoooooooooo, Kinders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lee - Magoo, I love that idea. When I first quit the factory, that is what I wanted to do, but after a day in a classroom, I changed my mind.
m&m - lexus, that's how I felt in my student teaching. So many problems and very sad that you can't solve all of their problems.
Janet/AR/host - The grade level I do not like is the middle/junior high school!
MissB - Magoo, That is an idea to consider. One of the reasons that I would like to sub is that I wouldn't have to work everyday. I don't think that I want to work on Mondays anymore. Those were always the longest days for me. We always had very lenghty staff meetings.
Stanley - Say, Janet, you don't like the species rug ratticus? <G>
al-IA - Janet, I will take your middle schoolers, you keep the little ones
Stanley - al, How goes it? Anything looking particularly hopeful for you?
Magoo - I have tutored but I prefer subbing. You can't be very silly in a tutoring situation...... Hey, who is it from SAN DIEGO?? Spent a day there eons ago, at the Sea World place--loved it, the kids loved it, and I got the worst sunburn of my life because it didn't occcurrrrr (I never know about that one) to me to put lotion on the BACK of my legs. My daughter still has the pearl from the Japanese diving place.
Janet/AR/host - al, I take my hat off to you and bow. middle school is a tough area to teach.
m&m - This is my first time chatting. What a riot this is. I've been wondering what my daughter was enjoying so much about chatting. Now I know. :)
lee - I really prefer the little ones, but to get into the district, I'm ok with the high schoolers. They intimidate me a little,a nd I'm using the rest of the summer to psych myself up.
Janet/AR/host - al, thanks for the congrats on my new job!
Janet/AR/host - m&M, please join us every 3rd monday of each month.
al-IA - Stanley, no, but I still have a couple of apps out there
Stanley - San Diego here, Magoo! Greetings, pambre! You've not been eating too many poison apples, have ya'? <G>
lee - m&m, I love this monthly chat. All the subs are great, and very uplifting. I wish all chat rooms were like this one is right now
m&m - Janet, I will try. This is a lot of fun... Passing out m&m's. yum!
pambre - Stanley, thanks again for the game.
lee - al, I'm praying for you! Let us know how it goes with you...
Janet/AR/host - Love the M&Ms!!!
Janet/AR/host - al, you have had an interview?
Stanley - Glad to send it, pambre. al, at LEAST you filled them out -- I only did so with 1, & it appears to be in limbo!
Magoo - Anybody else here want to stay a sub, besides me?? I'd really love to have my own room (2-3-4) until I start thinking about all the meetings and politics. Seems like the Grand High Poobahs at the state (and district) levels won't let you TEACH anymore.
al-IA - I know I would not have gotten thru this summer assignment without the help of the chatboards.Janet, I have been teaching the summer session at a residental facility for teenage offenders. What a trip it is?
pambre - Lee, teachers and subs get very tired and commuicating on line is difficult. But it is so much better being ib touch.
lee - Magoo, I enjoyed subbing, and actually have mixed feelings now that I have been hired. I could have subbed forever, if it wasn't for the pay.
Janet/AR/host - OH al, I bet that was an experience! I wish you all the luck in getting a teaching position.
Magoo - Somebody here is being piggy and NOT passing the m&m's.....
lee - I agree, pambre.
al-IA - Magoo, I know what you mean. that is why I like this ss. I am my own boss and it is get. No politics!
Janet/AR/host - magoo, I guess that would be me!
lee - Magoo, I have a cupcake left....
Magoo - HEY, 'al/IA', does that mean IOWA???
al-IA - Magoo, it sure does. Oelwein to be exact
Stanley - Magoo, I've mixed emotions re subbing -- probably at least 1 reason why I don't push harder for a contract.
lee - Hey, al, my sister lived in Elberon for a while...somewhere near Amana, I think.
al-IA - Hey, I was just surfing around before coming here. Found a teachers site on about.com that has posters (5x7) that you can print off.
lee - how would you print a poster that big? In pieces?
Janet/AR/host - al, what kind of posters?
al-IA - Janet, all kinds. If you have a color printer I think they would be nice. I only have b/w
Stanley - What kind of posters, al?
Janet/AR/host - al, can you put up the url? I would love to visit that site.
al-IA - I will be right back,
Janet/AR/host - al, I have a colored printer.
Janet/AR/host - Kim, are you a sub?
Stanley - Kim, do you sub? If so, where? [I'm in San Diego.]
Kim - i sub in Florida. I'm hoping to get a full-time position real soon
al-IA - http://www.p-rposters.com
Stanley - lee, When do YOUR classes start again?
Magoo - I FOUND IT, had to go get our trusty RMcN atlas, but I KNEW I'd been to Oelwein!!! I was born in Cedar Rapids, husb. went to Univ of I in Iowa City so we were there 3 yrs., then years later, back to Ames, before moving here. I MISS IOWA. "...We can be cold as a falling thermometer in December if you ask about our weather in July..."
Kim - BTW, Stanley, thank you for the supportive words in response to my post about declining a job offer
lee - Stanley, inservice is Aug 24 and 25, and we get the kids on Aug 28.
pambre - Mine starts Aug. 22 but I will help with HS registration 2 weeks earlier.
lee - How did you do that, Stanley? I'm looking for something new to learn today. LOL
al-IA - Magoo, where is here?
Stanley - Kim, You're most certainly welcome! To begin with, I REALLY felt sick about the 1 I mentioned in the post. But it WAS for the best...
Magoo - Hey, get ready, another serious ? coming up----do any of you have to wear ID tags??? Our district last fall said TEACHERS had to, and STAFF, and they never said BOO about the subs, who are the people who should wear 'em because everybody already knows the teachers and staff!! So I swiped one extra that was in an office and made my own. Glued a pic of Miz Frizzle on it.
pambre - I would like to learn to put link into post.
al-IA - Pambre, yeah they pricipal the middle school called and wanted me to help with registration, but told him sorry I will be still be teaching summer school. Guess that will fix he=is wagon
Kim - I feel a lot better about my decision, since I recieved a call today to interview with a school closer to home. The interview is on Thursday and I've got my fingers crossed
Stanley - Ayyyy, lee! <g> I'm a Mac Head, so keep the technical questions to a minimum, ya' hear?
lee - LOL Stanley. Sorry! ;-)
Janet/AR/host - Kim, I will keep my fingers crossed for ya and say a prayer or two for you. Keep us posted please.
al-IA - We have name tags, but like you for the people who should be using them
lee - It's ok, Stanley, I just clicked on it accidentally and it opened a new window. Whew!
al-IA - That is not for the people
Stanley - LOVE it, Magoo! Kim, I'll be praying!
Magoo - 'HERE' is eastern WASH......husband got a SERIOUS case of the Turning-40-Crazies, and instead of trading me in on a couple of youngandskinny blonds, he moved us 2000 miles. I could write a book....he grew up in Idaho, so the culture shock wasn't, for him, but I haven't had a decent hamburger in 22 years. Beefs out here eat rattlers and such, not corn.
lee - Kim, ditto what Stanley said!
Kim - Thanks!
lee - Yuck, Magoo!
pambre - Kim Do let us know but either way you made the right dec.
Janet/AR/host - Kim, the support on this chat board is GREAT! TNETTERS are the greatest.
lee - Yes, Kim, you have to go with your "gut" instinct...what is best for you...
Kim - Yes Janet, the sub board is great. I feel that I get a lot more support from it than the general board.
Stanley - Magoo... when you sub in elementary, do you read "Tall Tales?"
al-IA - That's what alot of ex-midwesterns say. They miss the beef
Janet/AR/host - LOL @ Magoo!
Magoo - I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN WITH THIS CHAT ROOM THIS EVENING !! thank you, everybody, this is really a kick!!
Janet/AR/host - Kim, we are here for you for sure. You can email me anytime.
m&m - Janet, Do you think school districts would rather hire young people coming right out of college or more experienced middle aged teachers.
pambre - Stanley, do you get any vacation.
al-IA - Magoo, don't forget there are other scheduled mtgs you can go to and the reg chat is awesome at times
lee - I was going to say something., but now I forgot!!
Janet/AR/host - m&m, I am defiantely middle aged. Probably so but I guess it is who is hiring. What they prefer.
Stanley - Hey, I"M in a "mood" -- only 4 days of school left, & 1 of those I'll need a sub myself!
Janet/AR/host - m&m, the Principal was my junior high geography teacher that hired me.
al-IA - Three weeks left here. Then I am going to CA to visit sister
lee - Wow, Janet!
Janet/AR/host - I am 43 years young. hehehe
lee - Stanley, you'll make it! You have a great bunch of kids!
Stanley - pambre, it's up to me, but I almost ALWAYS take whatever is offered. I'll probably have some days in Aug when nothing will be...
m&m - Janet, when I sub I can't believe how many young teachers there are. Then when I said I was interested in teaching, they look at me kind of funny. I'm only in my 40's and I don't look old.
Kim - m&m, i think it's a toss up. Schools want experienced teachers, but at the same time, they need the new people who are more up to date on learning theories and such
Janet/AR/host - m&m, got for it!!!! I did.
Magoo - Stan the Man (are you familiar with the St. Louis Cardinals??), I never have to READ tall tales, I think I AM one!! See, I had this mental melt-down 4 yrs ago--brain chemistry got all fouled up--and when I emerged from the rabbit hole, I realized that life is, indeed, too short, and so I am ENJOYING it now. There is this wonderfully free feeling of 'yeah, so??'. I don't think I abuse it, I really don't, but life sure is more fun when you don't sweat ANYTHING.
Janet/AR/host - Don't let them crash your dream. I didn't and I sure am glad I went for it.
Stanley - m&m, In NO way do I think it's an ADVANTAGE to be older -- I'm 53. However, around here it DID get a **LOT** better for us Srs this yr!
m&m - So would it be better this year to continue subbing or get a job in another district and get experience with my own class. I've been subbing for 2 years and got my credential in Dec.
al-IA - Kim, after you have been around education awhile you cansee the same stuff come back as "new" with a different name
Kim - m&m, want subject/grade are you interested in?
lee - m&m, I think it would be a good idea to sub this year...
m&m - Kim, I want elementary ed. except for K.
Kim - good point al-IA
lee - It will be more experience, m&m
Janet/AR/host - I want to thank everyone for attending this meeting. I hope to see everyone at next months meeting!
al-IA - Anyone here from CA?
lee - Janet, can I come, too? Hmm, please?
m&m - al-IA, I'm from California1
al-IA - Janet, are you going to continue to host?
Janet/AR/host - The subbing experience helped me get more money to start out. Did that make sense?
Stanley - THAT's the attitude, Magoo! m&m, If you're "game" & can get 1, try for the contract! Subbing will then still be there for you as a backup!
Janet/AR/host - al, sure am if that is ok with everyone. I enjoy them.
al-IA - m/m, sister lives in Scotts valley near San jose.
Magoo - 43 YEARS YOUNG, GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY, I'VE GOT DUST BUNNIES OLDER THAN THAT! 43, 43, where was I at that age? Well, it was 4 years before I decided to go to college, so I must have still had --gasp--kids at home.....
lee - Yes, janet, it did to me!
Janet/AR/host - lee, SURE!!!!
Stanley - I'm in San Diego, al. m&m, Where are YOU in CA?
lee - Thanks, Janet!
al-IA - Sister keeps saying lots of obs. But don't think I want to live in CA
Janet/AR/host - Everyone have a great night/week/month and I will see you here next month.
Magoo - Gotcha beat, Stanley, I hit 57 last April---EGAD !!! Now I am the same model as the first car husb. and I owned!! 57 Chevy, white and puce, built like a barn on wheels....
al-IA - Magoo, if you had that car now you'd be rich
Stanley - Magoo... I'm trying to visualize you in a classroom with kiddos! Bet there's LOTS of cacklin'!!
Janet/AR/host - Ok email me if you want to. I am there for ya.
Janet/AR/host - bye everyone!
lee - See you later, Janet!
