muffy - Oh,I hear there are all kinds of jobs in Texas, NewSub
Janet/AR/host - New Sub, we are all here to help! How long have you been subbing, muffy?
Janet/AR/host - I sub in grades K-6.
muffy - I'll be subbing all grades, but I'm also trying for a building sub position, that could be either an elementary or middle school
Histoire - Thanks.. **S**
NewSub - Muffy, where are you subbing? what state?
muffy - I've subbed for about two years with 11 years in between
Janet/AR/host - Are all of you credentialed?
Histoire - Hello... Yes...I am...
NewSub - credentialed?
Janet/AR/host - Meaning Certified Teachers?
bluette - not I, Janet, last year was my first as a sub
Janet/AR/host - How many are looking for full time teaching positions?
NewSub - no...I have an Associates degree and only business professional experience
Janet/AR/host - I am certified in 3 areas.
muffy - I'm only 6 credits away from be REcertified. I let mine lapse.
bluette - I sub all subjects and grades in 4 districts
bluette - I am looking into getting an MAT
Histoire - I am... I'm certified in social studies and English, either secondary or middle school...
bluette - want to get cert for MS and HS English but also K-3
Janet/AR/host - I am looking and have been all summer! Very frustrating.
muffy - Bluette, is that a Masters in Teaching degree?
Histoire - I can also teach AP European History and they have listed Arkansas history on my certificate for some reason..
bluette - yes Muffy, it seems to be the way for me to go
Janet/AR/host - Histoire, what state do you live?
muffy - I'm working on my masters, too.
Janet/AR/host - I live in Arkansas
Histoire - Moi aussi... **S**
bluette - I am changing colors, brb
Histoire - NW Arkansas...
Paul - thanks janet...just reading the previous posts carry on...
Bluette - didn't want to compete with our newest chatter
Janet/AR/host - HEY fellow Arkansan Histoire.
muffy - When does everyone start school? We go back on Wednesday, yippee!
Bluette - anyone else getting certified?
Janet/AR/host - Students started today here.
Histoire - Guess what..??? My husband has Ferris Bueller's Day Off queued up on the VCR to watch after the chat... He has some sense of humor.. **S**
Paul - just got my state results on certification and passed with flying colors
Janet/AR/host - LOL Historie!
Bluette - where Paul?
Janet/AR/host - CONGRATS PAUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paul - Texas...composite social studies
muffy - Mattie, will you be subbing this year?
Janet/AR/host - Histoire, did you get the private message from me?
Paul - I have an interview in the morning at a ISD
Mattie - I'm hoping to, Bluette. Tortuous process though, or so it seems
Bluette - lots of hoops to jump through Paul?
Janet/AR/host - I am certified in Social Studies/Elem Ed/and special ed.
Bluette - where are you Mattie
Histoire - Yes, congratulations... **S** When do you think we can expect to start getting called to sub..???
Mattie - California
Paul - for the test?
Janet/AR/host - GREAT for you Paul!!! Good luck to ya!!!
Bluette - My first call last year was about Sept 25
Paul - or the interview
Mattie - I've been reading the messages on the CA board and it seems that loads of people are in the same boat
Janet/AR/host - Histoire, anytime. I plan on showing up every morning to check.
muffy - Histoire: I've heard we could get called as early as the first week!
Histoire - showing up..???
Mattie - I think I'll be subbing, Muffy. Am just trying to pluck up the courage to venture back into the classroom
Janet/AR/host - I got called one year the first day of school.
Histoire - and what is "composite social studies", Paul..???
Janet/AR/host - Histoire, yes show up and ask if they need anyone to help.
Bluette - I am going to France and wont be available til Oct
Janet/AR/host - COOL Bluette!!!
muffy - How long have you been out, Mattie?
Paul - Historie...history, government, economics and geography...secondary
Mattie - Yeah - at first it's the people who don't turn up, then after about a month people start getting sick
Janet/AR/host - Mattie, what grade level do you want to sub for? What state?
Mattie - isn't that it?
Bluette - I will practice my French there
Mattie - How lovely Bluette - are you French then?
muffy - Bluette: You are the third person I've heard of who has/is going to France! Are you going on vacation?
Histoire - Oh, okay... I hadn't heard that title before... I taught Arkansas History, World History, Geography, and Civics and they just called it "social studies"... **S**
Janet/AR/host - What do you take with you when you sub? I take a bag of things.
Bluette - here we have teachers orientation and conferences end of Sept
Histoire - My husband and I went to France in June as part of a group... It was loads of fun...
NewSub - like what, Janet?
Paul - histoire...it is something rather new is my understanding here in texas
Mattie - Muffy, I've been at home with my children for years - have done a bit of part time stuff, but have never actually taught in the USA. That's another reason I'm scared![]()
Bluette - my mother was born there, and i lived in Montreal until age 14
Histoire - Me too, Janet... I have a book of puzzles, and National Geo. videos...
Janet/AR/host - I take books, word searches, something artsy for them to do, games, etc.
Paul - my certification dates back to the middle 70's and now trying to get into classroom had to update my certificate
Janet/AR/host - Stickers and candy for those who were well behaved.
Mattie - Lucky you. I'd like to visit Montreal. French is my subject actually. But there's no call for Frenhc teachers in CA![]()
Mattie - so it seems
NewSub - how often do you dip into the extra goodies?
Mattie - It's all Spanish
muffy - Mattie: I'm in the same boat as you. The first step was the hardest. I was home 11 years!!! Where did you teach before?
Bluette - I have erasers, pencils, sharpeners etc. enough for whole year!!!
Janet/AR/host - Paul, I hear it will not be hard to get a position in Texas.
knightmom - Has anyone ever heard of a book called Hands on Math Projects with Real Life Applications?
Janet/AR/host - I have small erasers and pencils
Bluette - Spanish is lots more useful, lots of language teachers here teach both
Mattie - French. And various other subjects when pressed. But I gather that in the USA too, a sub can be asked to teach anything. Is that right?
Mattie - as it better or worse than you feared, Muffy?
Janet/AR/host - knightmom, I have heard of it.
Paul - janet...contacted every school district in the DFW area in the last few weeks...no opening in my field...just stumbled on this one friday...got call at work wanting me tocome for interview
muffy - It was just different! Took me a little bit of time to adjust.
knightmom - That's right Mattie..so bring a pair of sneakers in case you get asked to do gym class in a pinch!
Janet/AR/host - Welcome zoe to the Sub Teacher's Meeting.
Mattie - I've heard of Hands on Equations
Bluette - I am willing (not necessarily able) to teach whatever they want
Mattie - Don't know whether that's the same thing. It has manipulatives as well as a book
Janet/AR/host - Paul, that is GREAT! Please post on main chatboard and let us know when you know about the position.
knightmom - This book is by Muschla? for grades 6-12
Bluette - knightmom--Barb/Chi
Paul - janet will do
Janet/AR/host - Paul, I have been so discouraged this summer looking for a position here.
Paul - bluette...have talked to ISD's around here about subing...they state that if you dont limit yourself to much will work everyday
Mattie - LOL Knight. Believe it or not, I once subbed for PE! For several weeks. (I am not at all into fitness!) Fortunately they did team teaching for PE
knightmom - I am terribleat math beyond elem level so I thought I could use this book for when I get desperate for help in MS math. Is it good before I buy it?
Histoire - Janet, have you heard of Arkansas letting teachers take a test called the Praxis test to add areas to their certification....???
Mattie - it was mainly supervisory. But I did have to do the keep fit dance stuff on my own
Janet/AR/host - Histoire, I have taken them. Had to to graduate from Henderson State University.
Mattie - Oh. Not the same book then, I fear. It sounds good though. I am all for real life applicaiton of math. Makes the stuff on the page make sense
Paul - janet dont get too discouraged...
knightmom - ANy other good help books out there anyone wants to recommend we keep in our survival bags?
Paul - janet keep plugging away
Bluette - my bag is getting heavy because I have so much stuff
Janet/AR/host - Histoire, I had interviews at Lincoln Public Schools and Prarie Grove Public Schools. I did not like that area and Hubby and Mother in Law(lives with us) were against moving.
muffy - I don't carry a bag. I guess I'm just tempting fate LOL!
Bluette - could work in the "big city" but really don't want to
Mattie - Have you seen the books "I hate math" and "Math for Smarty Pants"? They have lots of interesting tricks and stuff that migth interest students
Janet/AR/host - I have a website if anyone wants to check it out. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/5146/Subpage.html
Bluette - when i left my bag home, i missed having my supplies and stuff
knightmom - Yeh, my breifcase gets really heavy sometimes but I fear being without it for anything.
Janet/AR/host - Mattie, those books sound fun!
Histoire - I have subbed in Lincoln... It is a small town if you are used to bigger ones... Where I live we are about 20 minutes from Fayetteville...
Janet/AR/host - Paul, I try not to get discouraged but it is hard.
knightmom - Sounds good Mattie, I will look them up at AMazon and see what they have. Thanks
Mattie - oh gosh - maybe that "I hate math" tile is wrong. I ahev the book somewhere. I think the author is M. Burns
Mattie - they may well have it in the public library
Mattie - apologies for my terrible typing. I CAN spell really![]()
Janet/AR/host - Histoire, Hubby does not drive due to bad eyes and he would have had problems getting to a job. Here he takes a bus home from work.
Paul - janet my suggestion is try to get to know as many prinicpals and asst principals as possible and try to work in say three or four schools that way they know you and when position comes open your are there
Ruff - Hi all, everyone having a fun summer?
knightmom - Good I'll try at library first..and copy the pages I like. That may be cheaper than buying books.
Bluette - knightsmom, how's your son doing? Did he start school yet
Ruff - thanks for the welcome
Mattie - Alos "How Maths Works" But that is more expensive - big white DK type book
Janet/AR/host - Paul, that is my plan this year.
knightmom - Well, my space bar suddenly developed a ssticking disease so it looks like I'm rambling when I'm not really...Sorry![]()
Mattie - Is one allowed to register to sub in more than one district at a time?
Janet/AR/host - My website has ideas for bags and games(fill in times) etc.
Paul - janet make sure that you tell folks you want a full time position
Ruff - Yes, you can register in more than one
Janet/AR/host - Mattie, they are here.
Mattie - (the actual; title was "I Hate mathematics" by the way.)
knightmom - Hi Bluette, no my 10th gr starts after Labor Day as does my college kid in LaCrosse. When does your school start?
Janet/AR/host - Paul, I will and have been doing that. I am still hoping that they will need more teachers when numbers are settled.
Mattie - Oh that's good. I thought I might register with a district I don't necessarily wnat to work in first,, in case I make a hash of it to start with!
Bluette - school here starts after Labor Day
knightmom - Thanks for the info,Mattie. I will get to that next week.
MI/Jo - Hi all! Ready for school to start?
Janet/AR/host - Mattie, you will do great.
Ruff - Mattie, it gets you more calls.
Mattie - Then when I'm more into it, I'll go to the district I 'd actuallylike a teaching in
Janet/AR/host - MI/Jo, I would be if I had a teaching position. LOL
Mattie - a teaching post in, rather.
knightmom - Yes, I am ready for a paycheck to start coming in MI/jo
Ruff - Mattie, once your rep as a great sub gets out, you will only need one district.
Janet/AR/host - How much does your district pay for subs a day?
MI/Jo - Yes, I understand!I feel the same way. School starts the 27th here there is nothing out there.
Bluette - my advice to new subs is to get to know secy in the schools
MI/Jo - ((((Muffy))) Ready for the 29th?
Mattie - I hope you're right Ruff. Certainly thye seem soemwhat desperate here.
Ruff - I second the "get to know the secretaries"
Histoire - Then forgot to put a nickname down as I tried to see what I had missed.. **S** What fun..!!!
muffy - MI/Jo: Yea, Baby!
knightmom - $80/day herre in This part of Milw Co. Big city of Milw pays over $100/day but I don't want to work in big city
Ruff - Mattie, once you have the rep, the teachers call you at home to reserve you.
Mattie - I agree Bluette. When I subbed back home, I got nothing for six weeks. Then I went into a school and explained that I was avaialble and got loads and loads
Paul dfw0tx - janet around here in dfw runs from 60 to 90 perday
Bluette - $50-$72 per day for uncertified
Mattie - Really Ruff? This is very encouraging!
Janet/AR/host - Here subs that are certified teachers get $44.00 a day.
muffy - We get $88 a day here. They are starting an incentive program, though.
MI/Jo - I have a question folks, Do you think the "sub shortage" is a lack of bodies or certified bodies. It was a question I was asked here today. I earn $75.00 per day 'cos I went to the "sub teacher's training"
Ruff - Mattie, when you sub at a school, leave a short resumé in the boxes of teacher you would like to sub for.
Mattie - That's low Janet. Which state is that?
knightmom - Ruff, in some places, teachers do not call their own subs, like here, the sub caller has to make the contact. The teachers can ask for you in particular but you are arranged through the caller.
Janet/AR/host - Mattie, Arkansas
Mattie - Ok. Thank you
muffy - Jo: I think it is lack of bodies. They take all kinds here.
MI/Jo - Yep, we are in Michigan! lol
Janet/AR/host - All one has to have to sub here is an high school diploma.
Histoire - Rogers, AR has a net site to check for subbing positions and pick the one you want...
Paul dfw0tx - knightmom...same here in DFW they will take anybody with 30 hrs of college
Janet/AR/host - That is great Histoire!
Bluette - shortage here is for cert. and in the cities
Mattie - I am beginning to think that in CA the shortage of teachers is because they make it so hard to get credentialed. then they can keep everyone on temporary contracts, or only pay substitute rates, etc.
MI/Jo - Just a HS diploma? Wow! how does that work under the school improvement stuff and can non-cert do long-term positions?
Janet/AR/host - What do subs get paid there, Histoire?
knightmom - Here in Wisc they must have a BS degree in anything to sub.
Ruff - Knightmom, ok, then letting the caller know you have already found out your favorite is avialable is probably done, right?
Mattie - In my opinion, almost all decisions are made on money, rather than educational grounds, alas.
Janet/AR/host - MI/Jo, I hope now but not sure about that.
Histoire - I signed up to sub in 10 school districts last year after I finished with grad. classes...
Bluette - they take everyone who applies but that doesn' t mean those folks will get a second assign if they aren't any good
muffy - The incentive program seems interesting: work 30 days in a semester, get $100. It goes up from there. You could actually get $750 by the end of the year.
Histoire - $45 to $65 a day for certified...
Bluette - Hist--did all of them call you?
Mattie - Gosh Historie. And how many did you actually work in?
MI/Jo - Wisc, I can understand that, in fact to me, it is better than the recent hs grad???
MI/Jo - Historie, do you live in a small rural area with lots of little districts?
knightmom - Not necessarily, Ruff. I had teachers request me and get someone else because I had already been assigned elswhere by the caller. Just luck and timing is what it takes sometimes.
Bluette - I travel as much as 30 min ea way/ for my highest paying job
Ruff - I'm surprised there are still districts using a person to call and schedule.
Histoire - I worked in 6 different districts... I think I spread myself out too thin... **S**
Histoire - and that was in two weeks... **S**
Janet/AR/host - knightmom, the secs. at the schools here said they are in a quandry because I get requested a lot and she has to make some mad.
muffy - Does anyone "schmooze" a principal? How do you do it? What do you say?
Histoire - If it's Tuesday, this must be Bentonville... That kind of thing.. **S**
MI/Jo - Ruff in my home county all districts have human callers. In fact several have become friends.
Mattie - Where do you all sub? Elementary /Middle or High schools?
Ruff - Histoire...don't spread yourself too thin, you'll waste too much on gasoline. Not too mention the early get-up time.
Janet/AR/host - Mattie, Elem.
knightmom - Yea,this area a suburb of Milwaukee, wisc is a little behind, but won't spring for the computer caller and I like it this way better. I think.. for now. She at least knows which teachers I won't sub for so won't even askme.
Bluette - 2 dist call me personally, the other 2 use same service who ofcourse ask me for the lowest paying dist.
Histoire - Yes, MI/JO... There are 14 districts within an hours drive...
Janet/AR/host - The sec. call us here.
Mattie - Computer caller?! How does that work?
MI/Jo - I do lots of 3-8 work and love it. Histoire, I understand that "If is..."![]()
knightmom - Mattie. I sub k-12 all areas but dislike the MS..too many hormones there.
Histoire - I hadn't worked a lick all year and with graduate tuition and living off my savings, I was desperate for some income.. **S**
Janet/AR/host - muffy, explain please.
MI/Jo - Hey! like me, I have 16 within 45 minutes.
Mattie - So do you have secondary AND hs certification Knight? I was a middle/high shcool teacher. Could I sub in elementary schools too?
MI/Jo - Schmooze=talk with and get some inside info?! maybe job leads?
knightmom - I only sub in 1 dist and get called 4 of 5 days. I might apply at a 2nd disst a few minutes away for this year to cover that extra day.
muffy - What? About "schmoozing" a P?
Bluette - MS is where I often get assigns.
Mattie - I eman secondary and elementary. Not secdoanry and hs. Sorry
knightmom - All my schools are with in 5- 8 minu drive.. I am very lucky that way.
Bluette - I try to get acquainted with P. first thing.
Janet/AR/host - knightmom, same here. But some schools outside city I may try. Not too far at all.
muffy - Yea, everyone talks about getting on the good side of the secretaries. I thought maybe one should get on the good side of the P. I never see them for that matter![]()
Mattie - gor secdoanry, read "secondary"
Mattie - <sigh>
Ruff - Computer has subs in memory. It chooses appropriate sub and calls you. You punch in PIN # and hear the job. You then accept or decline.
knightmom - In WIsc like I said you just mneed a BS or BA in anything to sub and be liscensed for any grade level. You can ask for just certain grades when you apply to the district here.
Mattie - for "gor" read "for"
Bluette - smaller dist. you can get to know the P and Supt.
Mattie - hope they don't give subs a typing test
MI/Jo - Mattie, I have the same problem with"finger spelling"
Mattie - Goodness Ruff. That sounds a little scary. No thinking time. But then I don't suppose one gets much of that anyway.
Bluette - Mattie, don't apply for computer teacher
Janet/AR/host - I hope everyone checks out my webpage for subs.
Mattie - Thank you, Knight
Mattie - Knightmom. Sorry
Mattie - LOL Bluette
Paul dfw0tx - janet give the url again for your site
knightmom - Mattie, where are you by the way?
Ruff - Not scary at all. If you don't want to teach a particular subject or school, you choose not to and get the next call.
Histoire - Could you give that URL again, Janet... I tried to open it in a seperate window and it said it was not "available:".. **S**
Mattie - I am in northern California
Kimmy - How do you feel about retired teachers supplying?
Janet/AR/host - http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/5146/Subpage.html
Mattie - I see. And it doesn't count against you?
Janet/AR/host - Let me know if that works.
Ruff - The key is to know who is teaching what at what school. A sub must get the teacher schedule from each school to know this.
Bluette - I gave secys a small box of Godiva for Secys week
Mattie - I think they probably make very good subs Kimmy
MI/Jo - I like to see a retired sub next to me. I get idesa and support
muffy - Blue: You got the idea!
MI/Jo - Okay, Mattie, it contagious!
muffy - Bluette: You are looking for full-time right?
Histoire - Darn..!!! Will you e-mail me that URL, Janet... It won't let me open it... **S**
Mattie - Janet - the link didn't work for me![]()
MI/Jo - should be ideas
Mattie - I don't know why
Kimmy - How do you feel about retired teachers subbing?
knightmom - I was expecting Stanley or Stromer here tonight for the chat. they are in Calif too. Check them out on the chatboard for info where they are, MAttie. They are old hands at subbing
Ruff - It does not count against you. You can even call in and change the number it will call to get you. You can also let the system know you are not available on certain days. I love it!
Histoire - Maybe I just can't open it from here for some reason, Janet...
Mattie - LOL Jo
muffy - I think it's great for a retired teacher to sub! All that experience and knowledge!
Ruff - Kimmy....Hi, I'm retired and love subbing! I even wrote a guide for subs.
MI/Jo - Cool! any insights on getting a full-time position?
Mattie - Thank you Knight. Yes I think I did speak with Stanley once in here. And yes, he was helpful. But it was soem time ago
Ruff - Make your mark as a great sub and you are ahead of the pack!
Bluette - Ruff, how are you doing?
MI/Jo - I have done that...I think
Ruff - Then if there is an opening you've got the job!
knightmom - I should go and watch the Packers play tonight. I heard they are losing tho, so who knows. Then I have to make Band parents calls so nighty night room. See you all on the chatboard I hope.
Paul dfw0tx - jo keep plugging away...the positions are out there youhave to look all the time and ask everybody who you think might know of an opening
sandy - Hi, guys. I just retired and will sub this year.
Ruff - Hi Bluette...this is crazy, three conversations at once! How are you doing?
MI/Jo - knightmom is a band buddy mommy too?!
Kimmy - Try this site. There is a section for the substitute http://www.expage.com/currandtech3
Bluette - still enjoying my time off this summer
knightmom - Keep checking on Stromer and Stanley, Mattie. And Bluette, keep plugging away at it. We can only get better with age, right?
MI/Jo - Paul, I don't have any luck with feedback...do you get any?
Mattie - Ruff! It's suddenly dawned on me that I know your name from the board!
Histoire - When I subbed for the first time they were paying $18 a day.....and I had three kids that it cost $5 a day for daycare....but it led to a fulltime position.. **S**
knightmom - Oh yes, MI/jo. Cudahy Band parents! Took state 4 years in a row!
Mattie - It was when you mentioned yoru guide. I knwo Muffy, too
Paul dfw0tx - when i subed about 15 yrs ago...got very little
Mattie - Bye Knightmom - and thank you
Ruff - Bluette..what subjects are your favorites?
MI/Jo - I am a "Tecumseh Shooting Stars Marching Band" No state honors, but we are darn good.
Janet/AR/host - http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/5146/sub.html
Janet/AR/host - Ok. that should work.
Bluette - I love teaching little ones, K-3, English MS or HS
Ruff - Mattie...Yep! same Ruff.![]()
knightmom - Where is Tecumseh, MI/jo? Michigan?
muffy - Histoire: Glad to hear that you subbed and paid for childcare. I'm battling this issue myself. I still have a K who will need care for 2 1/2 days.
Janet/AR/host - I like K-6.
Ruff - Bluette...wow..the whole range. I don't like wiping noses any more.
Mattie - Ah yes. Taht one works Janet! Thank you
MI/Jo - Yes, SE corner. draw a line from ann arbor down to toledo and you should find us.
sandy - Do many of you get long term jobs? What is the pay if you have a class for about 25 days?
Janet/AR/host - I taught 4th grade in a private school which downsized.
Janet/AR/host - Your welcome, Mattie
MI/Jo - Muffy, I traded sewing for child care for awhile. It worked
Mattie - Oh dear.........
Janet/AR/host - Welcome Sandy to the Sub Teachers Meeting.
Paul dfw0tx - have to get out will let you folks know how my interview went
MI/Jo - Sandy, I range from $90.00 after 10 days to 125.00 after days for long-terms
Janet/AR/host - What is wrong Mattie.
Ruff - I don't take extended jobs. I only take 3 or 4 days a week and am usually booked 2 to 3 months ahead once school starts.
Mattie - Good luck Paul
Janet/AR/host - bye Paul and GOOD LUCK!!!
knightmom - I am right in SE corner of Milwaukee Wisc. We have State at UW-WHitewater. It is a blast watching those kids march, isn't it? See you on the chatboard, MI/jo, ok? Night! Good night room for real now!
MI/Jo - Good luck Paul...and good night
Mattie - Janet - you mentioned the downsizing - I assuemd that it meant you were one of thsoe downsized
Bluette - Sandy--I can't do long term, but there is one for 10 weeks near me, Health and PE cert. needed
Janet/AR/host - Mattie, Yes due to being the newest one to teaching and first teaching job. Principal said I had done nothing wrong at all.
MI/Jo - OHHH PE...I don't sub that on a day to day. I can't walk and chew gum at the same time.
Janet/AR/host - I will long term if I do not get a teaching position and if they need one for long term.
Bluette - did PE once, and that was enough
Mattie - One of the reasons I'd prefer to sub in many ways is that I have children. they are older now, but I'd still like to be free to go to their daytime school events and so on
muffy - Yes, even though the pay is low there are "perks" to subbing.
Bluette - I keep meeting my kids at the mall, shake hands, introduce myself to parents etc
Mattie - exactly
Janet/AR/host - Well everyone! It is 10:00 eastern time. Thanks for attending the meeting and hope to see all at the next meeting. 3rd Monday each month.
Ruff - I originally only took science classes and then expanded to other subjects. I have since come to love English and History.
Histoire - My husband and I like to travel....subbing allows for that... **S**
Mattie - and perhaps the biggest is that at the end of the school day you are done
muffy - Night, Janet
Mattie - No homework![]()
Histoire - Night everyone..!!!!
MI/Jo - Ah yes the perks to subbing...sleep in, go to lunch with friends, have a "sanity day"...endless possiblities.
sandy - It is so strange that there is a shortage in some areas, and none in others.
Janet/AR/host - Night everyone! Thanks!!!![]()
MI/Jo - Night, Histoire...
Mattie - BYe - and thank you!
Bluette - goodnight everyone, this is fun, if you missed any of tonights chat check the archives in about 2 weeks.
MI/Jo - Sandy, does your area have a shortage...what cert. areas?
Ruff - Bluette...It upsets my wife when I become notorious and get recognized everywhere. She values her autonomy.
Bluette - Ruff, see you on the board!!!!
sandy - I live in Maricopa County in AZ.
Ruff - So long Bluette...keep up the good work.
Bluette - my husband is shy, I am not at all!!!
sandy - Phoenix
MI/Jo - Night all, I have a 9 year old who wants "Mom time" gotta go
Ruff - Goodnight all...see you next time.
muffy - Night, Jo..Looking forward to the 29th!![]()
sandy - Not many of us left on. Only 7:05 here.
muffy - Where are you from Sandy?
sandy - I live in Phoenix. I was originally from OH.
muffy - I'm in Michigan.
sandy - I taught in Lorain County, OH, for 4 years. Then, moved to AZ.
sandy - Then, I taught 28 yrs. here. Bought back my 4 years from OH, and got credit for 32 yrs.
muffy - So is subbing all you want to do now?
sandy - It worked out well for me. I'm only 53.
muffy - That's great! I feel like I'm just getting started at 41 LOL
sandy - Yes, at least for this year. With the shortage of teachers in AZ, retired teachers may go back to work after being off for 12 months. If I miss the classroom this year, I have the option.
muffy - Sounds like you've got a lot of options. That's great!
sandy - I have ready been asked to do a long term job.
muffy - I'm going for a building sub position.
muffy - I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
sandy - Is there a shortage in Michigan? I've seen your chats on the sub board. This summer, that board really gave me some good ideas.
sandy - What is a building sub job? Is that where you have a job every day at the same school?
muffy - There is a shortage in some areas, not necessarily near me. I'm limited in that I've got kids, hubby, etc... I just can't drive an hour everyday to Detroit!
sandy - Have you gone to Cedar Point lately? I grew up about 30 miles from there.
muffy - A building sub is a sub who reports to the same building everyday. They will find something for you to do if no one is out.
sandy - For me, Muffy, I needed to slow down some. I never took time off, and had to put my own way through college. Went to Bowling Green University.
muffy - No, believe it or not we haven't hit Cedar Point in years. My kids are not into rides. "-(
sandy - My sister and brother-in-law live really close to Cedar Point.
muffy - And I'm just the opposite. It took me forever to get my degree, then when I was graduated there were no jobs to be found. I ended up subbing then teaching in a preschool. Soon after I got pregnant and have been home with my 3 kids for 11 years. I'm re
muffy - I meant to say that I'm ready to put this degree to use!!!!
sandy - There are alot of people going into teaching at an older age. Nothing is wrong with that. I babysat for a big-shot at Ford Motor Co. starting when I was 11. Then, also as a waitress at 14. Sometimes had 2 jobs.
muffy - Whoa, sounds like you do need to slow down. Well, now you can reap the rewards of all your hard work!
sandy - My dad wanted me to quit college in my soph year to stay home and take care of my younger brother and sister. My mom had open heart surgery. He really did not want me to go to college.
sandy - Yes, this different kind of schedule will be rewarding, but at my own terms.
muffy - Well Sandy, I've got to hit it. My little guy is sleeping on the coach next to me. I have to carry him up the stairs...UGH..He's heavy!
muffy - I've enjoyed chatting with you![]()
sandy - Take care, Muffy. See you on the sub board.
