Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Sue - hi
Sue - frustrated tonight
pambre - I worked with 3 grade today.
Prentiss - is anyone else dealing with open court?
Sarah - I haven't been called yet.
pambre - Why frustrated Sue
Sue - open court in past here now
hoopsie - hi everyone, how was your day?
Prentiss - s in "done with it'?
Sue - I worked all year last year as perm sub team teaching kind.
pambre - we are past open court also.
Prentiss - worked a 1sr today....but..........
Sue - I was callled come sub kind first week school
Sarah - I spent the day doing job applications...again!
Prentiss - LAUSD has mandated Open Court
Prentiss - so schools who are new to it.......
Prentiss - re scared tocall subs
Sue - End of today he tells me somebody else is coming in Wed for kind.-job has not been posted yet
pambre - Whats the scary part.
Lainy - What's open court?
Prentiss - they haven't figured it out yet......
pambre - That is sad Sue!
Prentiss - finding their way,,,and
Sarah - that's too bad, Sue.
Sue - I have worked hard unboxing material for the class-etc. I would understand if job was posted and somebody else got it
Prentiss - afraid they will fall behind if they cll a sub
Sue - I have been subbing 11 years
Lainy - 11 years by choice?
Sarah - Does he know the person?
Prentiss - STANLEY!
Sue - so many backbiters in system
Stanley - Hello, everyone!!
hoopsie - Sue, do you have to have a special endorsment to teach K there?
honeybird - does anyone have any good resources for activities 7-12
pambre - After 11 years, I would be angry.
Lainy - What is Open court?
Sarah - Being in education can be so frustrating at times!
Lainy - It's all political
Bluette - hello, sorry to be late
Sarah - Open Court is a phonics program
Stanley - Prentiss, so how are things in LAUSD? [Uh, where I'll probably next yr… ]
Prentiss - Laiy...Open Court is a reading pogram
Sue - no-hard get on full-time here-don't gain experience unless work 135 days out of year-have 3 years 1 county-0 in the other
hoopsie - I subbed for 2 years and then went back to school to add to my license.. that's what got me in the door...
Prentiss - acouple of weird things, Stan..open court now mandated
Lainy - Must be in another state than where I am -- never heard of it
pambre - Moving Stanley?
Prentiss - oer hiring of subs
Sue - I need get Master's
Bluette - I am taking grad classes and 2 of my fellow students are beginning subs, have yet to get first day and they are going to join us when they get home
hoopsie - I havent' heard of Open Court either
Stanley - Lainy, I agree with Prentiss: Open Ct [which I'm currently teaching in G-2] is MORE than mere phonics.
Prentiss - wherer are you bluette?
Lainy - Oh, phonics (Open Court) -- thanks for the responses
Sue - Open Court was popular here when ifinished college-Guided Reading is here now
Prentiss - it's been around for decades
Sarah - I've just heard of it through a school that I applied for & they said it was their phonics program. Is it good?
Stanley - Sue, where abouts are you located? I'm afraid if I reamin in San Diego I TOO will be subbing in my 11th yr. ;-( [I'm currently starting yr 7.]
Bluette - in NYState, getting classes in masters program so I can do student teaching which I need for certification
Prentiss - t i "scripted" and experiened teachers tend not to like it
Lainy - Getting hired seems to be a POLITICAL process -- if you don't know someone -- forget becoming permanent
Sarah - It's hard to think about subbing when you have had your own classroom.
Sue - WV-here sometimes fresh outr ofcoollege gets jobs over me-feel like wasting life away
Prentiss - Am I the only one who ENJOYS being a sub and doesnt want to have my own class?
Stanley - pambre, I had names of schools to contact for this yr in LAUSD. However, I was **NOT** ready to move in June. Perhaps by NEXT June?!?
Sarah - Especially as an experienced teacher who can't get hired or even a sub job.
hoopsie - Where I subbed, it seemed like they always hired out of state, never the subs!
Lainy - Personally, I HATE subbing!!!!!!!!!
Sue - subbing has advantages-I want a retirement one day
Prentiss - Sarah, I had my own room last year....a 4th.......and though I bonded with the kids. I worked way toooo hard
Stanley - Sue, in San Diego City Schools K-2 does BOTH Gurided Reading & Open Ct!
hoopsie - I do think that there are advantages to both..
Bluette - no Prentiss, me too!! enjoy everything but lack of benefits, would love to be a perm sub
pambre - Perm. subs in my district now make a reasonable salary.
Sarah - I agree. I taught K/1 at a private school. I spent about 6 hours a day after school prepping.
Prentiss - Stanley..... my fav school is new to open court his month
Sue - after 30 days perm sub here is not bad
Prentiss - and they fear getting behind, so do NOTHING but O.C. and I was told
Stanley - Prentiss, I **GREATLY** enjoy subbing. However, it's not at ALL certain that my finances will "allow" me the "luxury!"
Prentiss - that i I just get the OC done in the hole day
Prentiss - she'd be happy!
Sue - It is bad never knowing when gewt good payday
Bluette - schools are focusing on everything except children and learning
Lainy - My children went to the same elementary school beginning in k through 5th -- 9 years total I was all around that school. I worked as a teacher's aide and as a substitute teacher -- when a job came available I appllied but it was already givein to a girl who just completed student teaching at the school--- and she student taught with very influential teachers -- one was even the "fill in" principal. Political? I'd say.
Sarah - Subs here make decent money--as much or more than my school paid, but there are way too many subs this year
Prentiss - in Los Angeles we get $151/day....plus $50/day for long term.....and benefits
Prentiss - Happy New Yar
Stanley - Prentiss, I thought Open Ct HAD been mandated THROUGOUT the District! Also, you don't ever work in the Bell/Hawthorne Gardens area, do you? That's where I'm ANTICIPATING going for '03/'04.
Lainy - $95 a day in my area of New York. ---- each district is different -- this is actually upscale than most.`
Sue - depends degree here-$146 day here after 30 days
Bluette - no way --my districts pay $50, 55, 70, and 80/day--guess where
Bluette - the most
Sue - reg subbing about$90
Stanley - Pambre, what's a "permanent" sub? Also, what do they earn compared to contracted classroom Ts?
Sarah - Vancouver is about $100/day and depending on where in Portland (across the river) you work, you can get anywhere from $120-150/day.
Prentiss - Stan....OC IS now mandated, but just this yar for high achieving schools
Bluette - lainy, where are you,
Bluette - lainy, where are you,
Bluette - outhof Syracuse, in rural area
Prentiss - Stan..... I only work he San Fernando Valley
pambre - Perm. sub has contract for 150 days of work at $165 per day.
Lainy - Hudson Valley area of NY
Bluette - sorry, typing is bad tonight, eating at the same time
Sarah - With Oregon's massive budget cuts, tons of OR teachers came across the river to WA to work.
Prentiss - where in e world is that, Pambre?
Karen - hi all
Bluette - grandma's house was in Kingston
Stanley - Prentiss, well you can see why *I* thought it had been mandated. I mean, LAUSD wouldn't be willing to pay me 57K to go to a HIGH permorfing school, would they?
Lainy - Wow -- I know Kingston well
pambre - Last year as a long term sub ( covering for one teacher) I made salary at masters level which was 176 per day.
Prentiss - Stan...... I THINK that ort of $$$ goes to teachers with tons of time and ceits.....
Karen - Any one from NY?
Sarah - If you work as a long-term sub for more than 16 day, you get regular teacher's salary for that time period!
Prentiss - credits
pambre - Prentiss, I am in northern IL.
Sue - so n need sclothes
Sue - I better go
Stanley - Hi, Karen! pambre, would that permanent sub have to pay ANYTHING for health ins? Also, COULD he or she work MORE than 150 days @ the same rate?
Prentiss - Pambre.....how big is the is your district
Bluette - Lainie and I are Upstate NY, not City of NY
Lainy - Does anyone here HATE early morning sub calls --- I get a lot of anxiety never knowing if the phone is going to ring -- I'm fine when I know in advance -- but when I don't have something lined up I despise my job -- I find it difficult to sleep at night and if I wake at 4am or so I can rarely get back to sleep.
Karen - Im in Suffolk.
Prentiss - ours has 600,000 students.......40,000 contract teachrs
Sarah - Off the subject--Stanley, how do you get the smily faces?
pambre - Stanley, no benifits and other days are $93 per day. But this is very close to first year teacher salary.
Stanley - Prentiss, but did YOU not receive credit on the "longevity" scale for your previous yrs of subbing? MY understanding is that I but have to prove I've subbed at least 130 days/yr to have if count as IF I'd had my own classroom!
Bluette - subbing isn't going to to help me with practicum, I have to volunteer for 20 hrs anyway and keep a journal
pambre - Lainy, I do not hate morning calls as long as I get work.
Lainy - Does anyone here HATE early morning sub calls --- I get a lot of anxiety never knowing if the phone is going to ring -- I'm fine when I know in advance -- but when I don't have something lined up I despise my job -- I find it difficult to sleep at night and if I wake at 4am or so I can rarely get back to sleep.
jenibobber - Hey gang.... how is everyone tonight?
Bluette - me either, keep me working everyday and I don't mind, did over 140 out of 180 possible days last year
Lainy - Does anyone here HATE early morning sub calls --- I get a lot of anxiety never knowing if the phone is going to ring -- I'm fine when I know in advance -- but when I don't have something lined up I despise my job -- I find it difficult to sleep at night and if I wake at 4am or so I can rarely get back to sleep
Julie B. - anyone ever hear of the article "A Nation Still At Risk"
Sarah - Lainy, I would hate it, but at the same time, I haven't even had one call yet, so I don't know
Prentiss - Stanley.....no. and since I'm NOT pursuing a credential, it's mute wt me......
Alice - Hi every body!!!!
Stanley - Sarah, look in the more "slender" frame to your left. Click on, I believe, the "?" & you should see a breakdown of the various options -- IF you're using [I guess] Windows.
Prentiss - I have worked over 130 days/ yea for the last 6
Prentiss - Lainy...... I hate "cold calls" too.... most of my experience has be from requests....
pambre - Stanley teachers union and district keep tract of our days because of retirement fund.
Stanley - But Prentiss, were you not contracted for '01/'02?
Sarah - Thanks!
Prentiss - no, Stan. I was a long term sub......sub pay.....$204/ay
jenibobber - Is anyone else having a slow start to the new school year?
Stanley - Prentiss, also, in addition to starting '03/'04 as a Step 8 T, I should have upwards of 90 post grad units by then.
Bluette - The first I subbed in 10 schools, 4 diff disricts, it was a zoo, now I mostly work at one district and mostly at the HS
Lainy - I'm in my 4th year as a sub and I still haven't adjusted to early morning calls --- They make me NOT want to do this job
Sarah - Yep! Have you worked yet jenibobber?
Prentiss - Stan.....get ahold of UTLA.....our union....they;'ll be more informative than I
Bluette - I am not a morning person anyway
jenibobber - yeah I had my first class last wednesday, but getting kinda sick of waiting for another, you know??
Stanley - pambre, I can't BELIEVE they wouldn't give a "permanent" Sub benefits! :-$
Melissa - hi all
Bluette - just my third assign and today is day 9
Melissa - I was wondering does anyone know what a schoolwide enrichment teacher does?
jenibobber - Lainy, do you get called in pretty consistently?
Melissa - don't give them in NJ either
Sarah - Stanley, is your sub pay based on experience and credits? I thought all disticts paid a flat rate depending on the type of position.
pambre - Stanley, remember last year I did not even get a grade book.
Stanley - Prentiss, $204/day is almost EXACTLY what I earn in San Diego City Schools for teaching intercession!
Sarah - Lainy, does your district use a subfinder system or is there a real person who calls? On subfinder, you can call before it calls you for open jobs.
Prentiss - intercession = smmer schol? as a sub?
Bluette - $204 sounds great to me, my pay is less than 1/3 of that!
Bluette - sorry i am dislexic, it is a bit more than 1/3
Stanley - Sarah, sorry to have been confusing! I was talking about what I ANTICIPATE earning as a CONTRACTED classroom T in LAUSD! Sorry about that!!
Bluette - never anticipate, many aslip twixt the cup and the lip
Prentiss - Stan...I hopeyou're right, but think you might be opomistic
Lainy1 - System wouldn't let me join -- It's Lainy -- just needed to go on as Lainy1
pambre - Good One Bluette!
Lainy1 - No, Sarah my district isn't that advanced.
Bluette - my district hasn't a clue!
Stanley - Prentiss, in SDCS their yr around schools are ALL on the same track. "Intercession" is the 2 or 3 wks BETWEEN "sessions," if you will.
pambre - Sarah, It has been slow starting this year. District is tight on money.
Prentiss - gotta put a load in thewash......brb
Bluette - think they told teachers not to dare call in or ask for a sub
Sarah - I understand now!
Lainy1 - I'd love to quit subbing -- but couldn't find a job to match the pay --- plus I surely wouldn't get a permanent teaching job w/o subbing
Stanley - Prentiss, I subbing colleague here in San Diego began "negotiating" with L.A. in June of '01. By mid Aug she had her own class in East Inglewood, receiving longevity credit for subbing done here in San Diego.
Prentiss - San....that's better info than I would have...
Sarah - It's not really the money thing here, but this is the first year there has been a record number of subs.
Bluette - got to be so aggressive to get a job these days
Kathy - Hi all!
Stanley - Sarah, yes, I've heard [from 2 different sources] that L.A. has been losing Federal funding because of all the emergency certified Ts. Therefore, as an enticement, they'll credit us as IF we'd had our own classrooms!
pambre - Prentiss are you looking for contracted job like Stan
Lainy1 - No, you have to know someone with clout
Prentiss - back in a few...........
Sarah - ok, what I meant is that for once, they have too many subs. Usually they have 20 classrooms/day without subs. They said that it will be slim pickings this year.
pambre - Hi Kathy
Lainy1 - I wish I had utilized all those college years on a different career
Kathy - Hi pambre.
Sarah - What I don't understand is why so many districts hire out of state teachers and ignore the ones who are already state certified with experience.
pambre - Where are you from Kathy
Kathy - I'm in San Diego...but originally a Georgia girl.
Stanley - pambre, I "know" Prentiss from a Sub Listserve. He's retired from the Screen Actor's Guild & NOT wishing to go thru T.Ed courses. Therefore, subbing makes SENSE for him!
pambre - Sarah, Experience often costs more.
Lainy1 - Sarah, it's because when they get good subs they want to keep them available. I won't work in districts that I know don't hire their subs.
Kathy - Stan, sorry I didn't make the Visiting Teacher meeting...got my days mixed up. For some reason I'm off one.
Sarah - Apparently, in one district here (in WA), over 2/3 of new teachers were from CA or ND. Most of the rest were experienced teachers from OR. Very few were from WA.
Stanley - Kathy, have you been working regularly? If not, & you'd like me to put in a word for you @ "my" site…
Prentiss - back.....for second..... want to get into Mon Nit Football.......
Sarah - Actually I have never subbed before, but have had my own classroom for 2 years.
Kathy - I haven't started yet. Where is your "site" again?
Lainy1 - Then why are you in the sub chat room?
Sarah - I am not teaching this year and am waiting for a sub job! Everyday, I wait for the call!
Stanley - Kathy, do you still have the announcement sheet that was in your subbing packet? If so, check the **YEAR** on it!! [The District stuffed some of LAST yr's sheets!!!!! ]
Lainy1 - Well, I hope you like subbing -- good luck.
Kathy - Sarah, I've been in your shoes...I taught for 6 years, then moved here to CA and have had to sub.
pambre - Adult child calling. Nite all!
Kathy - I've still got it Stan..I'll look at it.
Melissa - sarah you sound like me
Melissa - sarah you sound like me
Sarah - I had major philosophy differences with my school and couldn't continute to teach there without feeling like I was going against my principles as a teacher.
Melissa - I was teaching for seven years, four in the same place when I quit
Stanley - Kathy, I'm @ Perkins, almost beneath the bridge. NOT a lot of jobs there YET, but most Subs are *QUITE* pleased with it!!
Prentiss - this is the first year in the last six that I haven't opened up an "unfilled" class.......and thus working from day one
Kathy - Bridge....Coronado?
Bluette - third year in my fav district and I had to beg for telephone list and new bells schedule
Sarah - They did not believe in developmentally appropriate practice and wanted my kdg. classroom to be like a 1st grade room, doing many worksheets a day, no play/center time and they had to sit at their tables during ALL instructional time. Yuck!
Lainy1 - Sarah, that's an issue I have also. I haven't had a permanent position, but with a 16 and 13 yr old plus my 4th years of subbing I have gotten to a point where I don't know if I even want to be part of the system anymore. I feel like quitting.
Prentiss - so when I found myself without a call on Sep 4 and 5, I wondered if I would ever get another call
Kathy - Sarah, I'm seeing this quite often...very disheartening.
Bluette - thats not K at all Sarah, they have forgotten the children, just as I saud
Prentiss - having been out o th "day-to-day" loop for the past year
Stanley - Also, Kathy, I had to CANCELL 2 jobs last wk & THIS wk because "my" site asked me to take what has now become a 14 day gig. So, there ARE jobs in the system… **IF** you can but access them!! O
Kathy - I always thought K was where the kids learn to adjust to being in a school setting, learning ABC's, etc. Now I'm seeing writing in journals, etc.
Kathy - Stanley, I could have gotten a couple, but I swear this may sound strange, but I just don't accept jobs from teachers who leave idiotic messages on subfinder!
Prentiss - Kathy......they're teaching K primordial algebra !!!
Bluette - you see, we don't GET IT, school is about numbers not students now
Stanley - Kathy, yes, Coronado. It's in Barrio Logan, but do NOT let that disuade you! [There are MUCH **WORSE** places to work, IMO!!]
Sarah - They told me that this is the "current trend" and basically I had to sign a paper that I would teach this way or lose my job. Hubby's in grad school, so I stuck with it for 6 months until the end of the year.
Kathy - Okay, what is primordial algebra???
Lainy1 - Is anyone considering a different career?
Prentiss - basic algbraic ideas......variables...etc
Stanley - Kathy, "idiotic" messages? Can you give an example?
Prentiss - youwouldn't blieve the pressure the teachershereare under. Thepacing is brutal!
Sarah - I quit, but am frustrated because I haven't started subbing yet. At times I feel that it was a bad financial decision to quit, but I feel proud that I stuck with my values.
Stanley - Prentiss, were you only without work those 2 days?
Kathy - This one lady went into 5 minute details on how she wanted a certain sub, but couldn't get her number to work, etc, etc, and so on.
Lainy1 - Good for you, Sarah
Prentiss - Stan....no. I have had one day/ week so far
Prentiss - so.....3 days since 9/4
Kathy - The other one sounded mad and basically gave her lesson plans on subfinder and then demanded that the sub meet her in the morning early before school starts so she could talk to the sub.
Stanley - Lainyl, a different career other than TEACHING? **NO**, but @ age 55, teaching IS "another career" for ME!!
Sarah - Lainy, I'm sending out resumes for all sorts of different jobs! I'm even considering an airport job at this point unless subbing picks up. Sometimes I wonder why it's worth teaching when it's so much work, but then I remember the pleasures that go along with teaching.
Prentiss - me too, as you know, Stan
Lainy1 - Kathy, that teacher sounds like she needs to not take any days off. She sounds like she doesn't think subs are competent.
Prentiss - Stan.......were you in SD in your youth? college days?
Lainy1 - I'm 43 and I'm not getting any younger -- going back to school sounds great to me
Sarah - When I taught, I felt that it was more work to prepare for a sub than to actually be there! I spent 3 hours writing up plans/procedures for a sub for 3 days.
Bluette - I enjoy the children and try to "make a difference " to someone -befriend a student, get to know someone new etc
Kathy - I've heard quite a few that have turned me away from subbing for them. One time one left a message saying how bad her class was and how she needed a strong willed person in there...would you take that???
Stanley - Kathy, I'd do the smae re the "angry" sounding T. As for the other, **LOTS** of Ts are [unbelievably] CLUELESS when it comes to using SAMS. I TAKE that kind of job, being determined to show him/her that *I* know what I'm doing -- EVERY bit as much as th
Sarah - Of course, when you unexpectedly get sick and have to call a sub in the morning, you just wing it!
Lainy1 - Stan, 3 hours of prep for 3 days of having a sub is not bad.
Sarah - That was 3 hours of writing notes; that didn;t include the prep time! Okay, maybe I'm OCD!
Stanley - Prentiss, I've been in San Diego other than living in Riverside for '72-'77 AND time in 'Nam &/or WestPac during '67-'71.
Bluette - I haven't pleased everyone I sub for, I am not strict enuf, class has a great time
Prentiss - Stan..... that WestPac tour ould have taken yo out when I was plaing down there alot......except at the Naval Hosp//.......
Lainy1 - I'm not strict at all. It's not my nature.
Prentiss - the dad of the eadeof our group was cheif chaplan ther
Pat the Bookworm - I am looking forward to a great year of subbing. Now that the move is completed and the time of running two motels is over, I am ready to accept teaching assignments.
Lainy1 - But, I'm not a push over either.
Kathy - I'm strict, but am good enough that they don't realize it.
Stanley - Kathy, re the T complaining of her class: For CERTAIN schools I'd pass on that one. Otherwise, if I felt "100%" I'd take it & be grateful for the HONEST "advance" warning!
Ruff - Hi gang...how is everyone...nuf jobs yet?
Kathy - I know. I guess I'm just putting off starting back.
Prentiss - not for another 10 days, Ruff
Bluette - just starting to fill my calendar Ruffy
Lainy1 - Does any1 refuse to sub in any particular grades/schools?
Kathy - Hi Ruff. I enjoy reading your posts on sub board.
Stanley - Prentiss, though I've always lived a mile or 2 from the Naval Hosp, I was never STATIONED there. :-[
Jean - Hi everyone. Just thought I'd see who was hanging out here.
Sarah - Hopefully soon, Ruff!
Bluette - don't sub for welding tech, or 6th grade girls PE
Ruff - I'm in the same boat...it is feast of famine. Last two weeks full. This week none and next week is booked solid. The name of the game.
Prentiss - we did concerts there in the late 60s often.... and played places like theBifrot Bridge.......and some pce out in La
Prentiss - LaMeas
Stanley - Lainyl, I choose when I can! Otherwise, most ANYTHING is "fair" game!
Prentiss - Bifrost Bridge
Prentiss - Mea
Bluette - I hate self contained middle schools in urban settings
Lainy1 - I don't like K-1. I feel like I'm babysitting. I stopped subbing in classes such as gym, art, etc. -- since I took those jobs it became the norm that I was not assigned to a classroom. Had to say I didn't want "special" areas any longer.
Ruff - Kathy, thanks for your nice comment.
Kathy - You're welcome!
Kathy - I'm not fond of Kinders. I
Ruff - Bluette....why not welding...more fun than PE
Stanley - Ah, come ON, Blue! I bet you'd look CUTE in a Welding Helmet! ROTFLMAO!! 8-)
Bluette - Kinders take a lot out of me, but all those hugs and smiles--I just love
Kathy - I like first though. I taught it for three years.
Prentiss - Hey.....Where else but a K can you motivate somebody by waving a sticker?????!!!!!
Bluette - it was a horror, the kids still talk about it!! only one girl and boys started throwing things at me the minute I came in
Kathy - I do not enjoy split classes. Is it just me or do a lot of them have behavioral problems?
Ruff - Is it my imagination or are teachers more stressed out than ever?
Lainy1 - How does every1 like working with teacher's aides? I used to be one and I can honestly say that I really dislike assignments where there's an aide (or more) in the room.
Prentiss - not imainion,
Stanley - Blue, Lainyl, & Kathy -- For the last 2 wks of Aug I did Pre-School [for the 1st time]! Nap time was B O R I N G……
Ruff - Rule #1 make friends with the aid and establish a good rapport. Sometimes it really takes work to do it.
Prentiss - my lare son wants the computer.......hes 6' 10" so I guess he gets it.....see y'all......
Kathy - I like working with the teacher's aides who like my being there. I try to be a support person in those situations and work with the aide.
Lainy1 - Ruff, I'd say teachers are definitely more stressed these days
Kathy - I taught Pre-K one year...will never do that ever again.
Ruff - Stanley....that's because you didn't bring your favorite pillow.
Jean - I have to go, too. My 8 y.o. is *still* awake & he's calling me. There's sometimes no rest for the weary. Bye.
Lainy1 - Stan, Nap time is such a waste -- the kids don't even nap --
Bluette - some aides are more trouble than they are worth, but they also can be a great lead teacher for you
Ruff - Lainy1....I am amazed at how much more paperwork, other than making lessons and quizes, each teacher must produce.
Kathy - When I taught Pre-K, no time to be bored during nap time...had to sweep and mop the floors, and clean the tables from lunch (It was in a daycare center)
Stanley - Lainyl, why do you dislike assignments with aides? I mean, isn't it BETTER having someone RELIABLE to help with the routines, location of materials, etc.??
Bluette - some have an attitude
Ruff - Bluette, you are right there!
Stanley - Good one, Ruff! But, a geezer does **NOT** need a pillow to fall asleep, ya' know?
Kathy - Sleep standing?
Kathy - My hubby could...said the Marines taught him to sleep anywhere.
Lainy1 - Stan, most that I've dealt with have been pushy and tended to give the impression that they thought they were in charge. Once I went to the principal and told her that she didn't need me --- she already had a teacher in the room.
Ruff - Any schools out there using DVD players now instead of VCR's?
Kathy - If I ever have pushy aides, I let them do what they're doing, offer assistance, and make sure the kids are safe. No use in power struggles.
Bluette - makes for an easier day if aide does work
Lainy1 - Kathy, do you leave a note letting the teacher know about the aide? Also, do you ever feel it makes you look bad as a sub when the aide takes over?
Kathy - Of Course Bluette!
Ruff - Kathy...I usually show the adult aide the teacher's notes and ask for suggestions that would make the day/period go smoothly. It gives them a good feeling.
Stanley - I've had < GREAT relations with NOT > 5% of the aides with whom I've worked! Moreover, in MANY cases their recommendations have created **NUMEROUS** additional jobs!
Lainy1 - You know the aide and students are only going to tell the teacher that the sub didn't have control. It has to hurt you in the realm of things.
Bluette - sometimes it is a woman vs woman thing
Kathy - Lainy1, I pretty much let the teacher know that lesson plans were carried out and leave it at that, unless there were major problems. I think it would make us look worse if we went complaining.
Kathy - Ruff, that's a good suggestion.
Stanley - Lainyl, I agree with Kathy about NOT getting in a power struggle with aides.
Ruff - Kathy, - what grades do you work with the most?
Bluette - control, classroom management, all have negative connotaions to me, on task is better
Kathy - Ruff, I mainly stick with first through 5th. My faves are first, third, and fourth.
Bluette - well, folks, school in the morning, good night all, bye Stanley
Stanley - Blue, since I'm not a female, perhaps you've a point about it being a woman vs woman thing…
Lainy1 - I've only gotten to the point of a struggle once -- that's when I went to the principal -- other times I just make the best of it.
Lainy1 - Good night Blue
Stanley - Blue, keep up your HEAVY schedule!!
Kathy - Hey, things could change Stan...
Pat the Bookworm - I normally am grateful that there is an aide in the classroom.
Stanley - Kathy, as of right now I MAY be scheduled for 2 long terms that overlap by a few days. Might you be interested in taking the overlapping days? [I'd have to talk to the Principal, of course…]
Lainy1 - Does any1 feel that if they don't work in a particular grade that if a job comes avail. in that grade that they won't be considered for it?
Ruff - Kathy - Those young students would be much more "attached" to their teacher aid and it would take a while for you to win their acceptance. It would be better to let the aid do the most, if she is willing, with you being the overseer and ultimately in charge.
Kathy - That's so nice Stan. I'll keep it in mind, but right now I'm trying to stay a little closer to home. Coronado is about a 30 min. drive for me.
Kathy - Oh definitely Ruff.
Stanley - Kathy, where on earth do you live, anyway?
Lainy1 - Does any1 feel that if they don't work in a particular grade that if a job comes avail. in that grade that they won't be considered for it?
Kathy - Not necessarily Lainy. I've been asked by numerous teachers from different grades in a school to sub for them by their watching me with someone else's class.
Lainy1 - Kathy, you misunderstood what I said.
Ruff - Bluette- my favorite term is classroom learning atmosphere. Establishing it and maintaining it is the name of the game.
Lainy1 - I mean a permanent job?
Kathy - Oops.
Lainy1 -
Kathy - Ohhhhhh
Kathy - I think that if you show you can do a great job with a class, I don't think it would hinder that possibility.
Lainy1 - That's what I'm hoping because I'd like to give up k-1
Stanley - Kathy, I'd think you could make it to Perkins in about 20 mins. [The District never corrected its book which still says "Crosby St" off ramp instead of "Cesar E. Chavez Parkway," the NEW name! ]
Ruff - Goodnight all...have a fun week!
Lainy1 - It's just that if it comes up in an interview how would one respond to not wanting to sub in a particular grade.
Kathy - Night Ruff. Thanks.
Lainy1 - Night Ruff
Kathy - Lainy, maybe you could bring up your preference first?
Lainy1 - I've got a lot to think about with this career.
Lainy1 - Kathy, How long have you been subbing?
Kathy - Or maybe you want to expand your horizons, learn new things, experience new grades....
Stanley - Lainyl, is your district smallish? Where Kathy & I work, well, there are probably about 2,000 Subs on the "rolls!!"
Kathy - Well I've been subbing since last year, but I also subbed for 6 months back in 97-98 while waiting to move to Japan.
Lainy1 - Learn new things that would help -- such as? Not trying to be smart.
Lainy1 - My districts has 10 elementary schools, 1 special needs, 2 middle, and 1 high school --- as far as public shcools that is.
Kathy - Or you could just say that K-1's are driving you crazy and you may feel the need to smack them around a little if put in that position again...
Kathy - Just kidding!
Lainy1 - **district
Lainy1 -
Lainy1 - I'm considering adding my name to other districts.
Stanley - Lainyl, so you're thinking declining to sub in K & 1 might hurt your contract potential in OTHER grades?
Kathy - You can definitely improve your chances that way.
Lainy1 - No, if a job became avail in k-1 and I applied.
Stanley - Lainyl, but you don't LIKE K-1, right? So why would you apply?!?
Lainy1 - To get a permanent job. It's so hard to get hired permanently w/o knowing someone on the inside.
Lainy1 - Jobs are usually filled before they're even posted.
Stanley - Lainyl, I've been at least ELIGIBLE in multiple districts **ALL** of my 7 yrs, though I'm now concetrating on ONE of them -- unless, sometime the night before, I'm still not scheduled.
Kathy - Well, not so true. I've never been hired by knowing someone. I've always gotten the job by going to the schools in May, and introducing myself to the Principal.
Lainy1 - Kathy, You've worked in a permanent position?
Kathy - But, it gets rough when you're in a place where there are very few jobs ever, like here in SD.
Kathy - Up until my move here to San Diego, yes.
Stanley - Lainyl, Kathy[I suspect] & **DEFINITELY** I would agree about the importance of "knowing someone on the inside!"
Lainy1 - What state do you live in? It's VERY political where I am.
Kathy - I've been a 2nd grade teacher, Pre-K, 6-8th science and algebra, and taught first grade for three years.
Kathy - We're in San Diego, CA.
Lainy1 - Did you have a favorite?
Kathy - First
Stanley - Lainyl, Kathy & I are both in San Diego. And you?
Kathy - I didn't think I would like it, but grew to love it.
Lainy1 - New York
Lainy1 - Hudson Valley Region
Lainy1 - I've been considering going back to school to teach middle school science --- currrently certified in s.s.
Stanley - Kathy, do you have CERTIFICATION to teach MS science & math?!? And, if so, are you still willing to teach 1 or both?
Kathy - I loved teaching middle school science and math. It was in a private school.
Kathy - The headmaster that hired me didn't care that I didn't have MS cert. He said he loved my enthusiasm and helped me get a temporary cert. to teach for the year. Then we moved to Japan...
Lainy1 - Good question Stan. Kathy, are you certified for MS sci. and math or did the area where you taught not require it?
Stanley - Lainyl, I want something with 20:1 class size ratios. I'd probably prefer G-3, though 1 or 2 would also "work."
Kathy - All I needed for the private school was the temporary.
Lainy1 - Kathy, that is so unheard of where I am. That's so great that you were able to get that opportunity.
Kathy - It was in Georgia.
Kathy - I think if I'd stayed longer, I would have had to get a real cert. though.
Lainy1 - I love grade 5 --- the students know when you're joking and know when you're serious. Plus, I love the subject matter.
Stanley - Kathy, have you checked what it would take for you to get "Supplemental" authorization in either of those areas? That would put you in a much, **MUCH** stronger position with respect to being contracted in SDSC!!
Kathy - I've thought about it. But where I taught was a different setting than a public school. Plus, I think I'd need to get training. There were things I was a little foggy on.
Lainy1 - Time to go. Hope to see you all on again. I'm not familiar with the schedule. This is my first time here.
Kathy - Bye Lainy
Kathy - How would I get the supplemental though?
Stanley - Lainyl, I also love Intermediate for the reasons you suggest -- & PARTICULARLY G-4 because of the social studies curriculum. However, teaching Intermediate in CA normally means you've 50% MORE Ss. And, when you're teaching in a TOUGH neighborhood……
Kathy - That was my thought Stanley. The kids that I had were all kids from upper neighborhoods.
Stanley - Kathy, if I were you I'd check with SDCOE. You might ALREADY have the necessary coursework, OR be so close that you could comeplete it -- possible even @ Community college for something like $12/unit!!
Kathy - I'll think about it. I'm in limbo right now on everything I'm doing. Hubby is thinking about changing courses in career and I don't know what he's going to do. If he does change, we could be moving within 3 months...
Stanley - Kathy, my work history & Spanish "skills" have barrio written all over them. Plus, a see myself being a REAL hard _ss @ G-3 because I've seen SO many Ss "already" being hard to "reclaim" by Intermediate!!
Kathy - I understand.
Stanley - Your spouse is an officer & get out that soon? Also, if he does, he'll have good job prospects on the "outside?"
Kathy - He's thinking of transferring into the prison system. With this he keeps his rank and would still keep his years and retirement and such.
Stanley - Sure you don't want to reconsider the days @ Perkins? It would be [I suspect] for the last 3 days of NEXT wk doing reading pull-outs?
Kathy - No, I'll pass. But thanks anyways.
Stanley - So, he's an MP -- or WHATEVER exactly they call it? Also, I sometimes talk with a friend who teaches in the CA prison system!
Kathy - No, he's a nurse. He'd be working in the clinic part of the prison.
Kathy - A lot of military health people, doctors, nurses, are transferring over to the Public Health Service. Not quite as much bureaucratic crap to deal with.
Stanley - Back on the Supplementals… I've one in English because of course work [including Linguistics for the CLAD], ALL of which were taken without KNOWING anything about "Supplemental" authorizations!
Kathy - That's neat. Killed two birds with one stone and didn't realize it.
Stanley - Uh, I understand "crap," having been in the USN from '67 thru '71. But, if Iraq becomes a reality, will they let hubby out of the Navy -- even to transfer to the prison system?!?
Kathy - Right now, they'd probably let him go. But my hubby told me, that even in the prison system he wouldn't be safe...they may still call on him to go if needed.
Stanley - Some of my classmates came up with Supplementals in things like Math, Science, P.E., etc. One of my classmates used that to eventually land a position @ PB MS doing PRECISELY what he "wanted:" Math AND P.E.!
Kathy - I still have a yearning for first though.
Kathy - Well I'd better go for now. Have a great week.
Stanley - So, he's a reservist? Also, he's USE attached to the Marines, right? [I was a Dental Tech, though I *COULD* have been sent to Hospitalman School, in which case there was a **HIGH** probability I'd have been in 'Nam on the ground with Marines. ]
Kathy - Night!
Kathy - Yes, he's also a reservist.
I'm_Simply_Insane - Hi all.
Kathy - He spent a year with the marines.
Stanley - We're "hangin'" here after the SubChat. And YOU, "Insane?"
I'm_Simply_Insane - Not much. Just came to get info.
Stanley - Info re subbing?
I'm_Simply_Insane - No. History.
Stanley - If so, "Insane" is a GREAT handle! [And that's basically a joke since I've about 1,200 days of subbing experience! ;-)]
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL.
Stanley - Info re teaching history -- as to MS or HS Ss??
I'm_Simply_Insane - I'm a HS student.
I'm_Simply_Insane - What subject do you sub for?
Stanley - Appreciate your candor! However, I last had history in '63/'64, so maybe I should WRITE a text, no!
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL.
Stanley - I'm credentialled in elementary, though I'll occasionally sub in MS, & even LESS frequently, in HS. I'm in San Diego. Whereabouts is thee [or is that "thou?" {G}]
I'm_Simply_Insane - Mia, FL.
Stanley - Bet you DIDN'T expect to find a "geezer" here, did ya'? ;-D
Stanley - Never been east of the Miss myself, but I HAVE been west -- as in 'Nam……
I'm_Simply_Insane - I expected to find someone that could help me.
Stanley - Hey, what's your specific question?
Stanley - I've my "sounds" playin' now, & you MIGHT be surprised how that jogs my memory! [Note that I said "MIGHT"! ]
I'm_Simply_Insane - What happened in 1774 and who are minute men?
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL.
Stanley - That's your question -- 1774 & Minutemen?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Yes.
Stanley - When was the Declarion of Independence?
I'm_Simply_Insane - I think 1776.
Stanley - Yup, therefore '74 was PRIOR, right?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Right.
Stanley - The Minutement, I believe, were PROBABLY in '76. They helped to alert the colonists of pending attacks by the British. The '74 thing is a bit tougher. Let me run get a reference book, OK?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Okay.
Stanley - Mm="Armed Am civilians wh were active in the Rev War & in the period jsut rpeceding the war."
I'm_Simply_Insane - Thanks.
Stanley - "They were named Mm because they were ready to fight alongside reg soldiers @ a monent's notice. The Mm of MA were especially well known."
I'm_Simply_Insane - Thank you sooooo much.
Stanley - Let me give you a suggestion for '74. Do a "google" search for 1774. Then narrow the search with "American colonies," OK?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Okay.
I'm_Simply_Insane - Thank you.
Stanley - OK, per our OLD encyclopedia, '74 APPEARS to have the following significance.
Stanley - The British Parliament passed the "Intolerable Acts." Then, in 9/74, the 1st Continental Congress met in Philadelphia.
I'm_Simply_Insane - Okay.
Stanley - THOSE should help to facillitate your google search, no?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Thanks.
Stanley - You're in G-11, right? Do you have your text with you?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Yes.
Stanley - Your index has GOT to have each of those listed!
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL.
Stanley - Here's what my old Collier's says re the Intolerable Acts.
I'm_Simply_Insane - I did.
Stanley - "One closed the port of Boston;3 others revised the govt of MA, taking many powers awy from the people; & a 5th granted toleration to the Catholics in Canada & extended the boundary of Quebec to the Ohio River."
Stanley - "The colonists then took a serious step. Following the leadership of MA, they called the 1st Continental Congress to meet in Philadelphia in 9/74."
Stanley - "A galaxy of statesmen with abilities such as are seldom found in a body of equal size, attended as delegates."
Stanley - "After feiterating previous declarations of rights & grievances, this Congress decided to cease importing British goods until its demands were met."
Stanley - "Finally, it provided for a meeting if necessary, of a 2nd Continental congress in May 1775."
Stanley - Ya' still there?
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL. I am.
Stanley - Well, that's all *I've* got "handy." Anything more YOU'LL have to get some other way -- e.g., via google.
Stanley - Say, are you an insomniac -- or WHAT?
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL. I'm not. Just not sleepy, but I have to go because in the next 5 hours I have to get dressed for school.
Stanley - Hey, well the next time you've a Sub, remember tonight, OK?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Okay.
I'm_Simply_Insane - Thank you for all your help.
I'm_Simply_Insane - Have a good one. Bye.
Stanley - Just curious [remember that little monkey named Curious George?], but was this for a paper or exam tomorrow?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Exam.
Stanley - You're welcome! Researching CAN be "fun," ya' know!
Stanley - Multiple Choice or Essay?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Uh... Essay.
I'm_Simply_Insane - I don't know though. The other kids said that they had an essay because the techer couldn't get any copies. So, it'll probably be multiple choice.
Stanley - OK, well what I provided were the details, i.e., "facts." HOPEFULLY in all those "trees" you can see the both "sides" tried to put financial restrictions on the other. Put a bit different, can you see how EACH tried to escalate the conflict?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Yeah, sure.
Stanley - IMO **MOST** conflicts [be they personal or "global"] have to do with money & power. Keep THAT in mind & you can often GUESS what happened!
I'm_Simply_Insane - Okay.
Stanley - I'm in CA, you're FL. However, my CD is currently playing a song entitled "Midnight." Could that be a sign?
I'm_Simply_Insane - Have a good one, teach. Thanks again. I'll see you around. Bye bye. Have fun.
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL.
Stanley - Likewise! You've been a pleasant reprise from the G-2s I'll be having for the next 9 days -- at least!
Stanley - going, going…
I'm_Simply_Insane - LOL. Bye bye.
Stanley - P.S., the CD is "Comin' Back Around" by Marcus Johnson!! Yeah……
Stanley - ((( poof !!! )))
