Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Janet/4/AR/host - Welcome to the Substitute Teacher's meeting!
Rana - Stanley I thought you got a full time job?
Janet/4/AR/host - I got a full time teaching job teaching 4th grade but I like doing the Sub meetings.
Janet/4/AR/host - Is everyone here a sub?
Rana - NO I teach full time....just wondering if there are still any subs out there??
Stanley - Rana, Now YOU'VE a memory! <G> I had a leave replacement contract in '00, but now it's '00/'01 -- sigh...
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, what grade do you teach and where?
Rana - oh....sorry to hear that Stanley cause you sound like a great teacher
Stanley - Rana, where & what do you teach?
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, what do you expect from a sub who subs for you?
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley,Sorry! Are you wanting a full time teaching poition?
Rana - I dont mean this the wrong way Janet but I dont expect anything...we dont have subs ....
Shari - I am a sub~~for about 22 years!!
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, You don't have subs?
Stanley - Say... lee & Janet: Successful subs -- as in, convinced 'em you were worthy of "more!" :-)
lee - LOL Stanley.....We must have doen *something* right!
Rana - No....we do not have subs so anyone is subbing...
Janet/4/AR/host - Thanks Stanley! Hey Stanley, I have had the public school call me on several occasions now since school started. LOL
Shari - For you full time teachers~~ What's the most annoying thing your subs do?? I want to avoid!
Janet/4/AR/host - lee, I am tired, too. I also do the aftercare!
Stanley - Janet, Yes, I'd prefer being contracted... particularly since I've had more of a taste of it. I've some new ploys to try for '01/'02.
lee - Wow! I don't do extras, but I'm at school an extra hour and a half every day (except Friday :-))
Janet/4/AR/host - Shari, When I subbed it was making sure the room was left in the same shape as it was left or better. Control of the kids is a must.
Casub - Stanley, can you believe I am trying this again?
lee - Stanley, are you looking for another long-term?
Stanley - Wow... GREETINGS, Judi!! Ya' mean those Kinders of yours let you free for the evening??? <G>
Rana - what if there are no subs ..???? how can a teacher get sick??
Janet/4/AR/host - Lee, yup staying late and coming in early is what most teachers do.
lee - Shari, so far I haven't had a sub, but I always felt when I *was* a sub, that the teachers were annoyed when we didn't follow the lesson plans or it seemed like we did nothing all day.
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, I don't know how that could work without subs.
Rana - it doesnt work without subs......it is chaos
lee - Rana, me, either!
Stanley - You're a brave soul, along with everything else, Judi! <G> lee, I'd take the RIGHT long term, & I'd certainly be open to another leave replacement, all I'm likely to get at this juncture.
Casub - If it is O.K. with everyone I will probably just read your posts - I find this pace pretty "nervous making" - but I wanted to see how everyone is doing.
Janet/4/AR/host - lee, I always went by the lesson plans and got all the work done most of the time. Very little was ever left.
lee - Rana, do your teachers give up their prep time to cover classes?
Shari - I agree~I always try to finish plans, keep the munchkins in check and leave the roooom neat and papers orderly.
Stanley - lee, Have you followed the recent flap on the board about not following the ol' LPs??
Janet/4/AR/host - Casub, that is ok......do what you think will be less nerving for you.
lee - Janet, I did too, but I heard the teachers talking about other subs....one older woman who had taught a long time didn't do what the teacher had planned that day because it was games and she "didn't believe in" them.
Rana - the teachers do sub lee....the specialists , etc.....but it is difficult
lee - Yes, Stanley, I did follow that.
lee - I thought it was rather an interesting bunch of posts!
Stanley - Judi, NEXT time steal 1 of the kids' Ritalin before entering, ya' know? 'Tis the price of admission... <G>
Janet/4/AR/host - lee, as long as the room is left clean and kids stayed in check lessons can be caught up.
lee - LOL Stanley!........Yes, Janet, I agree.
Shari - lee, you mean the TEACHER left "games"??? that's insulting to a sub .
Stanley - Shari, I LIKE your synopsis of subbing below!
Rana - games are very educational and a fun way to learn
lee - Shari, this teacher did alot of games with her students. She was a Special Ed teacher.
Stanley - lee, I WAS truly amazed @ the consensus amongst us!
Janet/4/AR/host - Shari, another insulting thing for a sub is nothing but worksheets! UGH!
Shari - Like I said , I'v made a career out of subbing (22 years) learning mostly as I go.
Shari - lee, thanks for the clarification. :)
Janet/4/AR/host - Subbing sure did help me before getting a full time position !
lee - You're welcome, Shari. :-)
lee - Janet, it helped me, too! It gave the principals and the superintendent a chance to know me and my abilities.
Stanley - For those of you who don't know, Casub recenctly revealed herself as Judi. I subbed next door to her for 7 wks, after 1st meeting here. She is **MOST** deserving of the Kinder position she started 9/5/00!!!
Shari - Maybe middle/HS is different but most elementary teachers are very prepared.
Janet/4/AR/host - Well I learned a lot about the school system as well as discipline plans! I tried a lot of them out! LOL
lee - Casub, I have to give you credit. I could never do Kinders full-time! They scare me....as well as wearing me out!!!
Stanley - Shari, what grades do you sub with, & where?
Janet/4/AR/host - kinders are still so dependent on everyone!
lee - Janet, I've gotten most of my ideas about classroom organization and discipine from hte teachers I've subbed for! I have borrowed a little bit from everyone! LOL
Shari - I sub K-5 in Illinois--near Joliet. This is my 2nd year as a permanent sub. I LOVE IT!!
Janet/4/AR/host - lee, I am using the same one as the teacher I am team teaching with. In public school it is called departmentalization.
Stanley - I'm just finishing 7 straight days of K. The 1st 6 I assessed for various classes, then I subbed in 1, & tomorrow in another.
lee - Oh, Shari, I'd have loved to have a permanent sub position when I was subbing! I got used to being called out on a daily basis, but never liked it, really!
Janet/4/AR/host - I like the kinders! They are soooooooo cute!
Stanley - Shari, permanent sub? You mean you're always in the same building?
lee - Oh, Stanley! You must be worn out!!!
Casub - lee, yes they run me ragged. Sometimes I cry on the way home (one good reason not to take the freeway!) But then, they say something something that changes the way I look at life! I am hooked.
lee - They are cute, though!
Shari - K is not my favorite. I really like the upper grades. I admire anyone who have that much patience!!
lee - I visited the Primary building in my district the other day, to talk to it's principal. I saw those tiny kids and realized how much I miss them!!!
Janet/4/AR/host - Everyone at the school I teach says I have a tough class. LOL
Stanley - If any of you want a Kinder-related laugh, see my post on the SubBoard re Bobby Knight's "subbing seminars."
Shari - Stanley, The way it is set up here, I am "shared" by 22schools . so much better than 1222!
Stanley - Stromer, How are things in New England?
Shari - I also have a few perks~~sick days :) personal days :) and educational reimbursment. :) (Correction on my previous post 2 schools not 22 --my "2" is sticky !
Janet/4/AR/host - http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/sub.html
Janet/4/AR/host - That is my sub page from my website.
sarah - we are in a university class and we have a question. Since you're in a lot of schools what have you observed about the differences between schools?
The SStromer - Stanley, I didn't know Houston was in New England. Thanks for the geography lesson.
Stanley - Shari, So you're guaranteed to work SOMEWHERE, right? Do they give you any choice in the matter? Also, do you receive more pay than if you weren't permanent?
Casub - Stanley, I am one person, they are 26 people. I am 50 years old. They are four and five years old. Somehow the energy levels don't favor my side! I think I cry just to stay awake!
Janet/4/AR/host - sarah, I teach in a private school. It is a Christian School. Very different. We teach Bible and students are disciplined(spanked) if necessary!
Stanley - LOL, Stromer. Hmmm... can I say "Today has been an upside down kind of day?"
Gene - I am considering becoming a teacher and would like to sub first to see it is what I expect.Without a lot of experience, can anyonr tell me which grades may be the easiest to start out with.
Janet/4/AR/host - Even though I have a tough class they are coming around everyday!
Shari - yes, I work at one of the schools everyday. If there isn't anything (rare) I work in the media center or something else. I have a contract and get paid almost 2x's reg sub pay.
Stanley - Judi, 26???? What happened with class size reduction???
Janet/4/AR/host - Gene, start out in the intermediate grades! Junior high was the worst for me.
sarah - Janet, spanking is not allowed or an accepted practice. Why not persuade by the power of the lesson and the development of each child?
Janet/4/AR/host - sarah, I don't condone spanking but it is used as a last resort and parents know this before entering the school.
Rana - You can spank ???
Janet/4/AR/host - By the Rules, we can read you so you are doing it right!
Shari - Gene, A good place to start is check out the substitute charboard on teachers.net. Lots of great ideas. As to which grade~~only you can answer that. Maybe HS is your thing, maybe kindergarten. What age do you enjoy the most?
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, the principal does that!
Stanley - Gene, DEFINITELY avoid Middle School. I think it is debateable over whether primary or intermediate is preferable for a newby.
Casub - I am going to be "reduced" (and Lordy, don't I wish that was literally) by Friday!
Rana - I mean any school allowed to spank??? I didnt know any school still did that??
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, this is a private school. A Christian School!
Stanley - OK, Judi, so do they have someplace to stick your excess? BTW, from someone who has SEEN Judi, she is overly modest about virtually EVERYTHING! :-)
Janet/4/AR/host - Middle Schoolers are way too homonal for me. LOL
By The Rules - I am not subing yet. I will be within a few months. (Florida)
Rana - janet ...are you saying christian schools should spank ,,,?
Rana - I am sorry...I just am shocked that schools are spanking kids
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, NOOO........I am saying it is used as a last resort! LOL
Stanley - By, do you have a credential, or just "tryin' out the waters?"
Rana - well...in that case..do you think spanking works???
Janet/4/AR/host - By, What grade level?
Casub - By The Rules - My personal belief is that you will be happiest teaching the grade level of which YOU have the fondest memories! Ask around - it is common to hear people say they love "whatever" grade because they were so happy then!
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, in some cases yes and some no.
Rana - do you have a large class Janet..I missed what you had said??
Shari - I believe in spanking in some cases but AT HOME! I won't want a "stranger" spanking my child!!
The SStromer - Gene, You might try it all. That's what I did. It turned out elementary is out. I never really learned to walk backword. Middle is out. I'm too old for raging harmones.
Janet/4/AR/host - When I was young spanking was allowed and I knew to tow the line or a spanking was gonna be a reality!
Shari - That's true! A different time......
Rana - I just dont think spanking is solving anything
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, no, I have 12 4th graders. 9 boys and 3 girls.
Rana - oh ..that must be wonderful Janet ..to have such a small class
By The Rules - Casub thanks for the note. what grade do u have.
Stanley - Judi, As is your custom, that makes EXCELLENT sense... & I'd never thought of if previously! :-)
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, yes it is a teachable number of students.
Rana - better than 32 , janet..LOL
Janet/4/AR/host - Rana, YUP! I would hate to have that many students.
Janet/4/AR/host - I do have an immature group of 4th graders. One of them does not even know how to tie his shoes.
By The Rules - janet are u serious???
Stanley - Janet, around here 4th & 5th can be, I believe, as many as 34. Judi, correct me on that if you know differently...
Shari - It was great "meeting" some The SStromer, lee casub and some others I read on the chatboard! I gotta go, tho! I have a take home test to finish for my library science class tomorrow night. 'Night all.
Janet/4/AR/host - Yes, I am serious. I am spec. ed. certified and I have a goup that is tough but I love them all and they are coming around more and more everyday!
By The Rules - that good to hear janet
Janet/4/AR/host - Night Shari! Thanks for coming!
Gene - Does anybody have any experience gaining certification via the' Alternate Route'(NJ).I've heard that while you've started teaching F/T YOU must also start taking college education courses/workshops??
Janet/4/AR/host - On my science test recently, I had 8 As out of 12.
Rana - subbing was so much fun...
Janet/4/AR/host - On my last spelling test there were 7 out of 10 As! pretty good huh?
Stanley - Gene, that's correct about the alternative route. But, it "tends" to only be available for "underrepresented" groups or subject areas!
By The Rules - thanks for time every. Let me know when the meeting. thanks a lot.
Janet/4/AR/host - By, meetings are every 3rd monday of every month!
Janet/4/AR/host - By, thanks for coming and hope to see ya here next month!
Stanley - Janet, Did you assess your kids at the start? And if so, what was your distribution of reading "ages?"
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, most were either on level or above but there are a few that were not on grade level.
Stanley - Janet, so you think their "A's" are basically the result of diligence as opposed to particularly high skills?
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, somewhat, their grades were not good at first but now they are pulling As and Bs. Even my spec. ed student when given an oral test is doing well.
Stanley - I've been spending too much time with the wee ones. Whenever that happens I go BOOOOOOONKERS around adults! <G>
Janet/4/AR/host - Well thanks everyone for attending the meeting. Hope to see everyone next month. Have a wonderful month of subbing and teaching!
