Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Janet/AR/Host - Welcome to the Substitute Teacher's Meeting.
Janet/AR/Host - cofio, are you looking for a permanent teaching position?
cofio - yes, I am Janet but substituting is Great
cofio - I have many days scheduled. the rest of the week and several days the following week and on and on until Nov. 30
Janet/AR/Host - I like subbing but I do not think it really shows administrators what one can do as a teacher.
cofio - it does have it's good and bad points Janet.
cofio - I have just moved from a rural area to an urban area and finding not too many differences but some
Janet/AR/Host - cofio, that is wonderful. I decided NOT to sub much this year for reasons I will not go into right now.
al-IA - Attended a conference today on setting up action plan for school crisis.
Janet/AR/Host - cofio, around here there isn't any difference in rural and urban schools really.
Janet/AR/Host - al, how was the conference?
cofio - I have a cousin who is a teacher in the district I am subbing in but she doesn't know that I'm subbing in her district (I'll wait until I draw her class and leave my usual sub note afterwards (LOL)
al-IA - The speaker mentioned several times that subs needed to be informed of the plan. At break time I thanked him for that and told him to keep driving that point home
Janet/AR/Host - OH funny cofio, you sure will surprise her/him with that!!! LOL
Janet/AR/Host - GREAT al!
Janet/AR/Host - Subs are passed up here for positions due to the sub shortage.
cofio - there really wasn't that much difference here that I noticed. This town has five different school districts and I have my name in 3 of the five but only have one activated at the time as I cannot be in more than one place at a time plus there is a chance of............
al-IA - I went on my own time and own expense. Guess who was there. My principal. He seemed amazed that I would come on my own
cofio - a full time special ed job perhaps in one of the districts and they are to get back to me this week
Janet/AR/Host - al, that shows you care about your profession.
cofio - a full time special ed job perhaps in one of the districts and they are to get back to me this week
Janet/AR/Host - OH cofio how wonderful. Please keep me posted on that!!!!!
al-IA - Actually, I just thought the subject sounded interesting. The discription in the flyer was not exactly what I thought it would be, but good just the same
cofio - I will Janet. I only have 22 hours in Special Ed but that is enough to get me a Temporary License so that I can teach my own class and still do my practice teaching in my own classrooom
al-IA - What is the topic tonight or is it potporri
Janet/AR/Host - Does anyone feel the districts pass up their subs for positions?
Janet/AR/Host - al, potporri! LOL Just chat about what you want dealing with subs.
cofio - I'll sub anywhere I'm called to teach. Age, grade, subject are of no consequence
al-IA - I am so far down on the sub list I will be 90 before I get hired here
DahilDosan - Janet, how are sub help in the different states? I mean, in NYC we have to leave a lesson plan ready for the sub.
cofio - The answer to your question is Yes Janet they do.
Janet/AR/Host - DahilDosan, most teachers leave a sub folder and have things ready for the sub.
cofio - Lesson Plans are a must for the regular teachers to leave for the subs but the sub needs to know how to make his/her own lesson plans in case the regular teacher was called away in a hurry and couldn't make out a lesson plan
john/Mass. - Hello, everyone from John Thomson of Boston, Massachusetts; have two items that might be of interest to you tonight and would welcome comment, feedback.
al-IA - We have a very strong staff here. Most been here 25-30 years. One of these yrs there is going to be mass retirement
DahilDosan - That's very important, and also to support subs with discipline problems
Janet/AR/Host - John, please go ahead and tell everyone.
cofio - Depending on the class I usually use a positive discipline system
Janet/AR/Host - I have had new teachers email me asking what to put in a sub folder.
john/Mass. - First item: FIRST National Conference for Substitute Teachers, Year 2000, Washington,D.C. Friday and Saturday, July 14-15th, 2000. All substitutes and other teachers and supporters will be welcomed!
DahilDosan - The seating plan is also very important
Janet/AR/Host - JOHN, that is wonderful!
al-IA - Janet, you should put this in one of your daily tips, which are very good, by the way
cofio - class lists, those that have serious medical conditions (like apt to have seizures in classroom, allergies, who are in the special classes, daily class schedule for every day of the week, etc
john/Mass. - For more details on national conference, see NA-POST advocacy web site: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Agora/4532/na-post.htm or phone Eleanor Hinton, 1-804-732-0523 in Petersburg, VA
al-IA - thanks for the info John
Janet/AR/Host - Thanks John, I will try to make plans to attend in July for sure.
Stanley - John, Have that sucker on the West Coast: Us San Diegans don't do DC!! 0-)
al-IA - have it in the midwest. I am only a sub, no money for either coast!!!!
Janet/AR/Host - Check out my site for tips and other things. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/5146/sub.html
john/Mass. - Other item: about unions. In Fresno, California, some 700 substitute teachers now are members of SEIU local, and have new, excellent contract with Freno School District; and major article on this city's independent substitute teacher union scheduled for October issue of TEACHER Magazine--look for it. Thank you. Anyone have any news about organizing, new substitute unions, associations?
Janet/AR/Host - Make sure you bring extra work for the students for lag times. Extra books, etc.
Janet/AR/Host - Any ideas for the goodie bag or fill in times ideas?\
al-IA - Here is my pet peeve. Not being informed about happenings in the building
Janet/AR/Host - al, AMEN!!! The teacher should always leave a message about special things going on in the school for the students to attend. But they seem to leave that out.
al-IA - Janet, I checked out your site and you have some great things listed there. Everyone needs to check that if only to brush up on what needs to go in taht goodie bag
cofio - sure do, Janet. One I like to use on the first day with a new class, especially at an elementary level (does work with high school students too) is to have the kids tell me their name and then something they like that starts with the same letter as their name. Ex. My name is Nancy and I like nachos, the second person says My name is............ and I like............. and her name is Nancy and she likes Nachos. repeat with everyone and the teacher has the last turn
Janet/AR/Host - That is great for even the reg. teacher to use.
al-IA - Bring some word searches of the like. Do word scramble s on board. Give impromtu speeches
Idjet - i always wondered how other teachers look upon word searches ...
al-IA - I try to find word searches that are subject specfic
cofio - I sometimes use a vocabulary Bingo when subbing especially at the middle and high school levels and I haven't found lesson plans
Janet/AR/Host - Puzzlemaker is a great site for makeing word searches and other puzzles.
Idjet - how does that work cofio? do you use their vocab lists or just bring a pre-made list?
Janet/AR/Host - I found a site to make ones own bingo games. http://www.venturasystems.com/downloads.htmlThis site will allow one to make their own bingo games. I made one for sight word bingo.
al-IA - www.nytimes.com is great for crosswards for mid school and up. Look under crosswords in the side panel. Also good lit stuff
cofio - I find out what they have studied as someone in the class will tell you and if they don't I just tell them i'm assuming they have studied the whole book and I'll choose the words.
cofio - this can be done one of two ways in making the vocabulary words for the Bingo sheets. Sometimes I use what I find around the room and other times I ask the students.
sue - WE played Math bingo in a title I math class-3rd grade
cofio - Have them make a grid 5 X 5 and put Free in the middle (or sometimes their name) and then have them put the vocabulary words in any square. Make sure you have a list of the words and the definitions to call.
cofio - I call out the definition and they have to find the word. When someone "Bingo's they have to give the word and the defintion
Stanley - Thanks, Janet. When I was in my overflow I found a site that can print Pokemon coloring pages. That day I had a G-6, a G-1, & 2 Kinders. EVERYONE liked those pages! I'm thinking of running some off to offer as prizes in my raffles.
Janet/AR/Host - Stanley, that is a great idea.
Idjet - that sounds like a great game cofio ... im going to try it :) thanks
Stanley - I'd really like to put in a plug for the lesson archives @ this site! http://teachers.net/lessons/ They were my major source of material for my overflow Kinder, because I wasn't in a Kinder classroom with the usual materials.
Janet/AR/Host - Well it is now after 9:00 central time here. Thanks everyone for attending the meeting hope to see everyone next month.
Janet/AR/Host - Good night everyone!
