Hoopsie - How's everyone tonight?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Okay, where is everyone?
Hoopsie - I'm here, OldSub!
Hoopsie - I guess no one else is talking!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hoopsie, have I seen you over at the primary board? or the k board?
Stanley - Let me move from IE to Netscape -- & I'll be fine!
Hoopsie - right , on the k board and the general one, Old Sub
Hoopsie - I have learned a lot from the boards!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Okay, I knew I'd seen the name! What grade levels do you sub for?
Hoopsie - actually, I dont' sub anymore, but did it for 2 years. How about you?
Hoopsie - Hi Stanley!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I guess I'm coming back to subbing. I taught Title I for 2 1/2 yrs
Hoopsie - How long have you been subbing, Old Sub?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I subbed for 2 years while going to college & before getting the Title I reading job!
Hoopsie - Have you had good experiences overall?
Hoopsie - Was the Title position cut? I've heard of that happening a lot...
Stanley - Wow, was IE **EVER** slow [1st time I've tried to use it to chat...] :-[
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I love teaching! I would rather have a classroom, but I'll do what I can for now!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Yeah, lost job to budget cuts/politics of new principal!
Hoopsie - I enjoyed subbing- I was in a district with 53 elementary schools.
Stanley - Old->New, what happened to the Title I position?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hoopsie, where are you from? I'm from Massachusetts!
Hoopsie - I had lost a position too due to a principal who had it in for me, when I went to the union about him
Hoopsie - I'm in southern Minnesota- bracing for our second snowfall tomorrow!
Magoo - oops!!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Magoo..welcome!
Stanley - Hoopsie, where do you sub? I'm primarily in San Diego, where my major employer is the 8th largest district in the country!
Hoopsie - Hi Magoo!
Hoopsie - I subbed in Iowa for 2 years, and now I'm teaching K in MN. I went back to school for ESL licensure and that's what got my foot in the door!
Magoo - Sorry, OSBNS!! Didn't mean to share your skin!!
Hoopsie - Do you keep pretty busy, Stanley?
Magoo - Hoopsie, where in Iowa? I've lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Ames
Stanley - Magoo, the INTELLIGENT chameleon!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hoopsie, how do you like K? I never thought about teaching K until I read all the great ideas on the K board here!
Magoo - HI STANLEY !!!
Hoopsie - I was in Des Moines, Magoo! Hey, I'm a graduate of ISU!Go Cyclones! :)
Magoo - Who you callin' 'intelligent'???
Hoopsie - It's definitely a change for me, OldSub- I love the older ones! I have also done 5th and 3rd!
Stanley - Hoopsie, I rountinely work 220 or more days/yr, which I **JUST** the way I like it!!
Magoo - Hoopsie, my hubby taught art at ISU from '74-'78...I absolutely LOVED living in Ames!!
Hoopsie - With K, they are lots of fun, but lots of maintenance too!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - What grade levels do/did you sub for Magoo, Stanley, & Hoopsie? I like 1-3 grades!
Magoo - Stanley, how can you work so many days?? Our district has 180 days in a school year.
Hoopsie - I really loved Ames too- I lived in the dorms for 2 years.
Stanley - Ooops -- WRONG emoticon! |-o [Danged Macs running Netscape... ]
Hoopsie - I subbed headstart-6th grade, and high school Spanish.
Hoopsie - Wow, you are busy, Stanley!
Magoo - I will sub K-6, library, Title l, music, and--if they are desperate--PE. I prefer 1-5, k's being so darn tiny, and 6th being full of hormones.
Hoopsie - Do you mostly get called in the morning, Stanley, or often in the evening?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I've been called only twice this year. 1st time slept through call & 2nd..already made plans that couldn't be changed!
Magoo - This is my 9th year of subbing. I think Stanley has been at it since God was a toddler, but I'm not sure...........
Hoopsie - My dream would be 5th grade, again, I think!
Stanley - Multi-tracked year arounds, Magoo! 8-) Plus, I thought it was **VERY** intelligent how you re-entered as a different "color!" Substitute creativity, right?
Hoopsie - Are you looking for full time, Magoo?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I'd love 1st or 2nd!
Hoopsie - I am having fun- lots of songs and games! And they dont' care how bad my voice is!
Stanley - I'm in yr 7, Magoo, but I've probably done more DAYS than you!
Hoopsie - Hi Jay!
Magoo - I've only worked 12 days so far this year.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jay, do you sub?
Jay - Hi
Hoopsie - Do all of you get paid monthly or every two weeks?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Seriously, tell me how you live off sub $$!
Magoo - Forgot you were year-round, Stanley. As for my skin, OSBNS was already green!
Jay - Just acceted a full time
Stanley - Greetings, Jay!![]()
Hoopsie - We do the monthly thing and I hate it! I am not good with that at all!
Magoo - 'LIVE OFF SUB $$" ??? HAHAHAHAHAHA
Hoopsie - What grade, Jay?
Jay - Just took a full time
OldSubBecomesNewSub - So, Jay what are you teaching now?
Jay - Middle
Stanley - Jay, **KUDOS** on the full time!!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jay. how much time did you put in as a sub before landing a job?
Jay - Success for all- Reading Title one
Magoo - We not only get paid only once a month, we get paid a month BEHIND! Any work I did in Sept. I won't get paid for till the end of Oct.
Jay - On and off 120 days
Stanley - Old->New, how many kids in your Primary classes where you are?
Hoopsie - I don't think I ever would have gotten hired where I subbed... there were lots of subs and I never knew no one who got a full time
Magoo - Oh, Jay, I love doing Title l reading!! If you ever need a sub, just holler! (Where are you?)
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Subbing around here is on the teachers' schedule...every 2 weeks!
Jay - Ohio, thanks
Stanley - Jay, where are you, & how low are most of your Ss reading?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, kids...no more than 24! Depends budget is REALLY BAD!
Magoo - My district is very small--4 elem. and one each of middle and high school. For a sub to be hired is about as likely as for me to fly to the moon.
Hoopsie - I was born in a suburb of Cleveland, Jay... are you close to there?
Hoopsie - We only have one elem. school and the middle/high school is combined
Magoo - Ohio......that's a bit of a commute from Washington....oh, well!
Hoopsie - Not ready for a road trip, Magoo?
Stanley - Old->New, "subbing on the Ts' schedule?" Do you mean frequency of payment??
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Yeah, pay is same as teachers!
Magoo - If I were 20 years younger, I would be hungry for my own classroom. But, at this advanced age, I'll stick to subbing. They won't hire me anyway--age.
Jay - I have the lowest 1/3rd and they are on the bubble of grade level, 300 miles
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, I don't mean we get paid as much as teachers just as often!
Magoo - Hoopsie, where are you?
Stanley - Jay, you mean they're within a yr of where they're supposed to be?
Hoopsie - I'm in southern Minnesota, Magoo- getting ready for our 2nd snowfall tomorrow!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Magoo, what did you ever do w/the data you collected on sub $$$?
Jay - D.C/OR the state of?
Magoo - Southern Minn......Worthington??
Jay - They are close to grade level
Stanley - Jay, if SO, that is nuttin' like what you might see here in San Diego!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jay, how do you determine who gets into the Title I program?
Hoopsie - Oh my, Magoo- so close! Worthington is 15 min away! That's where I had my first teaching job!
Magoo - OSBNS, I haven't done anything with that info as yet. I'm going to bide my time, prepare a 'fact sheet', and hit the local school board with it before the year is out.
Hoopsie - Have you been to Worthington, Magoo? Or know someone there?
Jay - Well they also are DH and one has terrets
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Magoo, I learned that MA is one of the lowest paid states for subs! If I could I'd move!
Stanley - Magoo, I'll have to add my 2¢ to your $$ strand...
Hoopsie - Oh- Magoo- our rate is $85 oer day and after 10 days it goes to $100 a day.
Jay - The fund are for schools in emergency
Stanley - Jay, DH?!?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jay, do you use any standardized testing?
Hoopsie - isn't DH dear husband?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - developmentally handicapped?
Stanley - Hmmm... on 2nd thought, deaf & hard of hearing??
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hoopsie, I thought..darn husband, too.
Jay - Yes, thats part of the problem we are scoring very very low for 4th grade reading
OldSubBecomesNewSub - oops, Hoopsie thought dear husband not darn!
Magoo - Hoopsie, I lived in Madison, South Dakota for 6 years. We went to the dentist in Minn.---Pipestone, I think. We went to the quarry there several times, anyway.
Jay - DEVELOPMENTALLY HC
Jay - Like my typing
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jay, I'm interested as a former Title I teacher, you also service Special Ed kids??
Stanley - Songster, hello!Should I put my music CD on?
![]()
Hoopsie - Yep, I've been to Pipestone! What did you think of SD? I was in Sioux Falls for a year.
Magoo - Is 'MA' Maine or Minnesota or what.....I can't remember those 'new' postal things.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Massachusetts
Songster - ok if you want to/What is the topic tonight?????????
Hoopsie - MA is Mass. ME is Maine and MN is Minn.
Stanley - Jay, do you have a SPED credential? Or, is that req'd for your position?
Jay - So many have never been IAT 'd and slip by
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Thanks Hoopsie!
Hoopsie - Will you sing for us, SOngster?
Magoo - Hoopsie, Madison is just an hour north of Sioux Falls. Hubby taught art at Dakota State College. I think it's a univ. now, tho.
Songster - not tonight/my voice is tired/sang all day
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I just can't believe that Title I money can be used on Special Ed kids. Has you school ever been audited?
Hoopsie - So you've lived lots of places too, Magoo? We moved around a lot when I was a kid!
Jay - Old sub--they are more often SBH
Stanley - Song, we're all Subs or have just left subbing for a new position. Et tu?
Magoo - SD was VERY windy and VERY cold and NOT in the 20th century. At least, Madison wasn't. VERY prejudiced there. Hard to live there. I don't miss a thing about it.
Hoopsie - We can't use Title 1 for special ed either...
Jay - Anger, fights, insub...etc
Hoopsie - Is SBH the same as EBD?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Those sound like the 2nd graders I had last year, Jay!
Jay - LOL
Magoo - Hoopsie, I was born in Iowa, went to K in Chicago, grew up in St. Louis, went to college the first time in Illinois, and since married, have lived in Iowa twice, South Dakota once (once was enough) and now Washington.
Stanley - Jay, I **HOPE** you're getting contracted pay [& bennies] for your toil!!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Songster, what grades do you sub for?
Hoopsie - OldSub, did you work with sp. ed kids when you did Title?
Songster - |-o this is how I sing on line |-o !|-o
Magoo - Jay is in oHIo..........
Jay - Yes, thank goodness and working towards masters for literacy
Hoopsie - I went to high school in St. Louis- Mehlville/Oakville area! This is too strange, Magoo!
Songster - Is this chat about subbing
OldSubBecomesNewSub - My kids would end up being tested for Sped. I did have some kids on an IEP for Math while I helped them w/reading!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Songster, what would you like to discuss?
Stanley - Jay, just today my principal [I've been @ the same site all yr] told me I'd NOT be doing a biling maternity leave in Kinder.
Jay - Its varies but I also work with them during a protectected block
Magoo - Oh, Hoopsie!! I lived in Kirkwood!! My brother and his family are still there! GO, PIONEERS !!
Songster - Nothing in particular/I teach music K to grade 9/both choral and band
Hoopsie - We used to go a big flea market in Kirksville- sound familiar, Magoo? Or wait.. maybe it was in Festus?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Songster, you've been a sub or you sub?
Magoo - Songster, I have the greatest respect for music/band teachers. I have subbed both (when they can't find anybody else--I can't read music or sing!) and usually the kids know more than I do.
Songster - I teach full time/actually more than full time/ don't we all!!!!!!!!!lol
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Does anyone else old a Master's Degree?
Jay - I am trying to stay positve, however I am at one of the bottom 5 out of 175 schools
Jay - At my school?
Magoo - Hoops, it's been decades since I actually lived there. There were so many flea markets.....and Kirkwood has a Green Tree Festival every year.
Stanley - THEN the Principal told me one of our District's WORST schools was looking for a G-6 T. I grinned, declined, & she grinned: 'Nuff said, I guess!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jay, consider yourself lucky you are at any school! If you can survive there you can survive anywhere!
Songster - I subbed at the beginning of my career in music not fun/kids switched instruments on me, and I know music/ I don't envy subs at all
Hoopsie - Nope, no Master
Magoo - I don't have a MA, don't want one, don't need one, but my hubby has his in Fine Art, and also his MFA, both from Iowa State
Hoopsie - I'm waiting until my kids are older to get a Masters
Jay - Thats what they keep telling me. Its an eye opener to have to have such a rigid structure sometimes the kids look like prisoners
Stanley - Jay, is your school in danger of being taken over by the District or State?
Hoopsie - I want one! I'm not sure though in general ed or what
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Jay & Hoopsie, do your states require a certain degree level? MA requires Masters!
Magoo - Hey, you wanna talk 'switched' ??? Last Friday I subbed in a 5th grade. I've known the teacher for 20 years, but hadn't been in her room yet this fall, so didn't know any of the kids......8 of the little boogers switched their desk name tags on me and I didn't catch it!!!![]()
Hoopsie - nope, no certain degree level. Our school won't even pay more for a masters unless it through a certain school
Jay - If the transients and regular enrollment dont improve I am not sure
Hoopsie - Doesnt' MA pay their teachers pretty well?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Massachusetts gave 5 years from the time you go a job, but then expanded deadline to 10yrs. So if I'm correct I have 8 years, but then again I don't have a job!
Songster - I have 2 degree's none of them are masters/pre-masters maybe
OldSubBecomesNewSub - MA teachers pay seems okay, but subbing $60/day?
Magoo - To sub in Washington, you have to have a degree, plus be fingerprinted, plus pass a criminal background check.
Stanley - Old->New, depending on your location in CA, a MA **CAN** be the kiss of death in that it tends to price you WAY above Ts coming in from out of state!
Magoo - Hi, halifax
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley are you still with us?
Hoopsie - that's the requirement here in MN too, Magoo
Magoo - My district only pays $80/day, and, of course, no benefits. God forbid they should give subs benefits.
halifax - hi magoo - your requirements sound the same as here.
Hoopsie - Yeah, I had been told that when I was in college, Stanley
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Subbing requires an application w/CORI check (criminal background).
halifax - do any boards pay subs benefits?
Magoo - I found out last week that the AIDES here--library, Title 1, etc.--get paid more per hour than subs do, and THEY get retirement and health insurance!! And they only work 6 hours a day.
Hoopsie - When our school board was hiring and someone had an MA someone actually asked, "did you look for someone else?"
Magoo - halifax---are you in Nova Scotia???
halifax - yeah
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I guess if I think about how much subs & aides get paid, that would be the same in my district!
halifax - where are you from magoo
Stanley - hali, in Los Angeles I BELIEVE there is health insurance after 100 days, though I'm not sure whether or not there is a co-payment.
Magoo - Also, the cooks and bus drivers get paid more, and they have benefits. And they have shorter hours. And they don't really interact with the kids, like subs do.
Magoo - halifax, I'm in the SE corner of Washington state.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - So, would subbing be better if there were benefits? STUPID question!
Hoopsie - Do you all go ahead and get your own insurance then, or do without?
Magoo - I could work at Arby's and get paid almost as much, and I'd have benefits. The min. wage in WA is just under $7/hour now and is going up in January. Subs here get a little over $10/hour
Stanley - hali, here in CA **ANY** Sub can voluntarily join the retirement system, with it becoming MANDATORY if you ever Sub 100 days in a given yr.
Magoo - Hoopsie, I am covered by hubby's insurance, BUT he will retire in 17 months, and has told me that I either have to be totally healthy by then, or croak, as he doesn't know where we'll get the $$ for my ins. after he retires.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hoopsie, since I lost my job I lost insurance. COBRA was too much $$. I could be covered by unemployment, but I haven't joined & I didn't think that I would be unemployed so long!
Magoo - COBRA??? Not sure I'd want to be insured by a snake..........
Hoopsie - I need to get going.. thanks for the chat, everyone!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Nanc, you sub? What grade levels?
Magoo - hi, nancWhere do you sub??
Stanley - Hoopsie, I've paid for Kaiser coverage since we sold our business in 10/'93. Paid **BIG** dividends, too, in that my left retina spontaneously detached in 1/'01!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hoopsie, see you!
nanc - Yes, I am new this year
Magoo - By, Hoopsie!! Don't forget to plug in your car tonight!!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hoopsie, see you!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - COBRA is co-pay like $500-600 a month for 1 person to be insured!
nanc - I sub in southern new jersey
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Nanc, why are you subbing?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I should be faxing my resume for 2 job openings!
Magoo - I think something is going to have to happen with health insurance here. Nobody ever figured on us living so long, and since we do, we need medication, etc. The health insurance people need to get a clue.
nanc - I use to be an dental assistant for oral surgery but, I was always working never had time with my son
Magoo - nanc, what grades/subjects do you sub??
OldSubBecomesNewSub - So, Nanc what grades have you subbed for? I like 1-3rd!
Stanley - Hoopsie, I utilized COBRA after the sale of our business, as well as after my leave replacement contract terminated. *CONSIDERABLY* better deal -- for ME! [&, yes, Magoo, I AM S-S-S-Stanley the Snake!]
nanc - I sub for K-4
Magoo - WOW, what a switch in professions!
Magoo - My favorite grade is 4th
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, did you ever say what grades?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Halifax, what grades do you sub for? Are you still here?
Stanley - Hey, Nanc, I was a Dental "Techician" in the Navy! I've certainly assisted on my share of 3rd molar extractions!
nanc - It was an very exciting job
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Halifax & Nanc...looking for full time teaching positions?
nanc - I always felt sad when we would get the children in for bad teeth at 18 months though
Stanley - Old->New, I've an Elementary credential, so I TRY to stay K-5, or 6. However, I do bilingual, SPED, & some occasional MS.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, what's your favorite assignment?
nanc - Some of the schools I found out really make you feel like you belong there and the others I feel like a stranger. Does it ever change?
Stanley - Right now I'm in a long term for an "extra" T who is doing literacy support. Then I teach an hr of math/day to G-1s.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I should be going! I need to write a cover letter & fax a resume tonight! Great chatting, see you next time? When is next time anyway?
nanc - If anyone gets a chance to go to the board tonight, I have a question on there that I am really upset about
Stanley - Old->New, I'll **ALWAYS** claim a roving job if I hear it on the 'puter. And you?
Stanley - Old->New, in about a month. ALWAYS on a Mon, & I usually post about it the weekend prior.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, I'll take anything at this point! I saw 2 job postings while surfing the net!
nanc - I am not use to wondering where I am going to work the next day. I guess that is something I have to get use to
Stanley - nanc, what question? Does it list "nanc" as the author?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Nanc, things will pick up in subbing! FLU season is coming then you will be booked in advance!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Where did Magoo go?
nanc - no, I put nan, by mistake, I have work almost every day this month, no I am not bragging
Stanley - Well, **BEST** of luck to ya', Old->New![You don't live near Hopkinton, do you?]
Bluette - hello to all, sorry i could not be here tonight
OldSubBecomesNewSub - See, I should be logging off & I'm still typing! I'll check out the Sub board tonight! Don't promise any words of wisdom. & Stanley I almost tried to come to the meeting last night!
Bluette - did magoo eat all the cookies
Magoo - sorry!! phone call that I had to take. Mutual friend had a cancerous kidney removed a couple days ago, and the caller wanted an update.
Stanley - HI, Blue!!Nanc, so you don't learn of your assignment until the morning of?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, no I live in what I refer to as the Northern part of Massachusetts. Near Nashua, NH ever heard of it?
Magoo - Hi, Blu!!!
nanc - Stanley and old sub becomes new sub I read so many of your posts I thank you for all your advice to everyone
Bluette - any snickerdoodles left/ can't wait to try the earthquake cookies
nanc - no, some of my assignments are book for next month
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Okay, gotta run this time! I loved the chat & I'll check for your words of wisdom at the Sub board!
Magoo - Nanc, do you need a cyber hug???
Magoo - ((((((HUG)))))))
Stanley - Old->New, I've a LONGTIME friend who lives in Hopkinton. However, I've never been E of the Mississippi, myself...
Magoo - Stanley, I frequently don't have a clue where I'll be working when I go to bed at night. I get phone calls at 6 AM a lot of the time.
Bluette - wanted to tell old sub that my son lived in nashua
Stanley - nanc, do you have a computerized gatekeeper? If so, there is probably a way for you to call IN to pick off jobs!
nanc - yes, we have a sub finder we can call in for a list of jobs
Magoo - Well, I gots to go. This was a nice chat, thanks, everybody!! Toodles!!
nanc - subs are a turn over around her because the casinos are may be an hour a way
Bluette - sure it was nice for magoo, she had the cookies and the teal recliner
Ruff - Hi Gang, sorry I'm late!
Stanley - Magoo, I suspect YOUR situation is a function of having so few schools in your District. [When everybodies in session, I potentially have access to > 200!]
Bluette - hello ruff, not chatted with you in a long time
Ruff - Hi Bluette...chat..chat..Did someone mention Hopkinton, Ma?
Stanley - nanc, I'm not understanding "subs are a turn over..."
Bluette - sorry i couldn't be here sooner stanley but it is a sad and long story
Stanley - Ruff, **THANK YOU** for the OS 10.2 tip!!
nanc - I heard from a lot of people that substitute don't last to long because of the pay 75.00 they can make more at the casnios
Ruff - Glad to help Stanley...we need all the help we can get.
Stanley - Ruff, I mentioned Hopkinton: My longtime friend Lisa has lived there for about 15 yrs now.
Stanley - nanc, you mean WORKING for the casinos?
Bluette - and it isn't far from Nashua NH
Ruff - Stanley..Wow! small world! I lived there 20 years till 1996, on Lumber St.
nanc - yes, because I live in southern new jersey
Ruff - Bluette...my daughter lives in Somersworth, NH.
Stanley - Ruff, my friend lives on Church St, directly next door to the library.
Ruff - Hi nanc...glad to meet you. You won't have the same feeling when you go home from the Casino!
nanc - no, I work there when I was in my early 20's I saw what people lost
Ruff - Yes, Stanley we used to go to that parking lot by the church to deposit Salvation Army type stuff. Never met Lisa...
Stanley - nanc, just today I learned I'd NOT have a long term from ll/12 - the end of Dec. So, I've called in numerous times, picking up 4 different days. My advice: **BE** proactive!!
Bluette - oh yes stanley, have to keep making contacts and showing up at various schools to drum up business
Stanley - Ruff, "Lee" is an EXTREMELY active cyclist, ROUTINELY doing "centuries" on the weekends!
nanc - I have the rest of the week filled and they are requesting me so that is a nice feeling
Bluette - i work almost every day in a ms-hs, and if I am not working there I usually have other offers in the elem or in another district
Ruff - Stanley...she sounds like a good person. Do you get back there often?
Stanley - nanc, I guess I'm not understanding why you say you're uncomfortable not knowing where you're going...I mean, unlike you & I, MANY Subs don't know until the AM of where they're to be assigned...
Ruff - I've been called for just about every day this month and I thought it would be slow this year! 99.9% high school jobs at one school.
Ruff - Bluette...sounds like you've been busy too!
Stanley - Ruff, I've NEVER been E of the Mississippi. However, since the majority of Lee's family live in San Diego, she normally visits here @ Christmas & during Aug.
Bluette - busy and tired, took last week off to visit dew, SCGal
Ruff - By halifax....
Bluette - Stanley, go east fella, come visit me!!
Stanley - Ruff, I've been @ ONLY my fav site since 9-3: First a 5 dayer, then a 14, & now [until 11/8] my current gig!
Ruff - Next time I will get here sooner. Bye for now..see you on the chat boards.
Stanley - Bluette, besides being C H E A P , I've no longer the flexibility to travel!
Bluette - ah, i am poor and mostly inflexible
Bluette - but this year i have been to NC, Paris, Tennessee, and now SC, and NC for Thanksgiving
Bluette - never again on a Greyhound bus for 24 hrs!!!
Stanley - I'm flexible 'bout LOTS of things, though to ME travelling is a **HUGE** hassle![Thank GOD my friend visits HERE!
]
Bluette - gosh, I hate flying, won't drive more than 2 hrs by myself etc
Stanley - Well, ONE of these days I **HAVE** to link up with Cher -- since she & I probably live < 10 mi apart!
Stanley - My parents always said I was a **GREAT** traveller as a kid -- **NEVER** got tired of looking out the window @ things!
Stanley - But NOW my diet is somewhat "restrictive," & I NEVER want to go someplace unless I KNOW there is a **BIG**, warm pool in which to swim... [blah, blah, blah...]
Bluette - Vegas in summer 2003??
Bluette - fussy huh?
Stanley - It's just much, MUCH easier to stay put, ya' know???
Bluette - glad to talk with you tonight, it has been awhile huh
Bluette - well, if I come to vegas maybe a side trip to your house?
Stanley - Yup, a while, & **DEFINITELY** fussy! What's with Vegas?!?
Bluette - TNET gathering is being planned for next summer, i promise you won't have to travel far and there will be a big pool at every hotel
Stanley - Sure enough -- re the side trip! [Plus, SHOULD I be contracted in L.A. for '03/'04, $$ wouldn't be such an "issue!"]
Stanley - WHEN next summer, & is it already listed somewhere?
Ksub - Hello, everyone!
Stanley - Howdy, Ksub? You prefer the wee ones, right?
Bluette - not sure, ask Cher for info, she is the party organizer and I hope to be there too
Ksub - yes, that's right.
Bluette - must say bye for now, goodnight
Sunny - Hi all!
Stanley - Blue, well, HOPEFULLY I will actually MEET Cher before the end of the yr [though my coursework on Sats IS throwing a monkey wrench into things...]
Stanley - Ksub, I'm in San Diego. How about you?
Ksub - Kentucky
Stanley - Blue, adieu!Sunny, GREETINGS!!
Sunny - What's the topic of conversation tonight?
Stanley - Ksub, how long have you been subbing? And, have you been working all you'd like this yr?
Stanley - Sunny, as usual, we've been ALL over the lot...
Ksub - I have been subbing two years now. How about you?
Stanley - Sunny, do you have something in mind?
Sunny - No...I was just on the chatboard, checking what's new.
Stanley - I'm in yr 7 -- & those have been FULL yrs [i.e., upwards of 200 days/yr]!
Sunny - I was reading about a poster who wrote about sub bashing..I identify w/ that.
Stanley - I've been in long terms & had 'puter problems, so I've NOT posted anywhere *NEAR* as much as previously...
Sunny - Lucky you w/ the long terms. I'm in all per diems...I hate that!
Ksub - Sunny, where are you from?
Sunny - The district I've subbed for the last 2 years is not calling as much. I've been calling them. It's a little strange for some reason.
Stanley - Arrgh... I was [& maybe still will] post on that Sub bashing strand. From what I read [& I didn't read everything], the originator seemed VERY sensitive to me.
Sunny - I'm in New England..rather not say where...everyone in New England knows each other!!
Sunny - Actually, Stanley, she had a good point. Why should teachers talk about subs in front of subs. It is rather unprofessional.
Stanley - Sunny, you'd prefer long terms to per diems? GENERALLY I don't: Here long terms pay but 10-15% more for VASTLY increased work loads!
Sunny - She simply stated that she didn't like the bashing and wondered if anyone experienced the same. The replies were a little insensitive.
Sunny - I would rather have long terms, only because it gives me more stabiltiy. I like having them, it gives me good practice.
Stanley - Just today my site told me the District had come up with a bilingually certified T to fill a maternity leave assignment in K. I was in NO way displeased...
Stanley - Hi, MClark!Sunny, I guess I didn't see the insensitive replies. Also, I'm thick skinned & don't perceive such overheard comments as being directed @ ME!
Sunny - I agree, but sometimes I feel a little insecure, too, so I take that to heart.
Sunny - I also really don't like posting anymore..a lot of what I post is never answered. I'm ignored, usually.
Sunny - I'm going to go now. Long day today. Had 2nd grade, then worked all night! I have 6th grade tomorrow, so I need my strength. Godd night all!
Sunny - I mean, good night!
Ksub - Bye, Sunny.
Stanley [back] - The "other" Stanley crashed, & now I'm "Back" using Opera as my browser!
Ksub - Hello, Stanley!
Stanley [back] - Sunny, I'll certainly TRY to answer your posts in the future!
Ksub - Are there usually a lot of people here? Is this just an off night?
Stanley [back] - Ksub, isn't it STRANGE how a 'puter can crash -- yet the board STILL shows you as being connected?!?
Ksub - Yes, it is.
Stanley [back] - The "listed" chat time is 9-10 PM ET, so it's NOW about 1 hr "late" -- the STORY of muh life...
Ksub - Oh well.
Stanley [back] - I use a Mac, & tonight I've tried 3 DIFFERENT browsers. IE [the 1st time I've tried to use it here] was **INCREDIBLY** slow. Netscape CAN lock up on me...
Ksub - I don't know too much about computers, but I am learning.
Stanley [back] - Opera seems OK, though I've really not used it enough to know if it will occacionally "lock" like Netscape...
Stanley [back] - Do you use a Mac or PC?
Ksub - Do you sub all grades, or just high school?
Ksub - I use a PC.
Stanley [back] - MERCY!Virtually NEVER High School...
Ksub - middle school?
Stanley [back] - I've an Elementary credential, though I'll occasionally do MS.
Ksub - We don't have to have a teaching cert. here to sub.
Stanley [back] - Neither do we in MOST San Diego County districts...
Ksub - My aunt read in the newspaper that in 22 states, a high school diploma is all that's required to sub. Have you ever heard that?
Stanley [back] - SOMEWHERE I've something I downloaded that says much the same thing...
Stanley [iCab] - Sorry, but that OTHER browser was TOO hard for me to see what I was keyboarding. This is MUCH better -- at least for NOW...
Ksub - I'm sorry you are having trouble.
Stanley [iCab] - That's kind of you, but it's more along the lines of experiementation!
Ksub - How long did you have to sub before you they started calling you a lot?
Stanley [iCab] - Also, FYI, the Stanley [back] browser is now CLOSED. Yet, it still shows that connection as being active, doesn't it? As I said, WEIRD...
Ksub - sorry about the extra "you".
Stanley [iCab] - When I started [9/96], it was the FIRST yr of downsizing in CA. MANY of the districts had hired Subs to meet their needs. Therefore, I was working virtually daily within the first month.
Ksub - That's good.
Stanley [iCab] - Also, I'm reasonably fluent in Spanish -- a HUGE advantage here in SoCA!
Stanley [iCab] - How long did it take YOU to work as much as you'd like?
Ksub - I'm not there yet.
Stanley [iCab] - Also, do you have any bilingual classes where you are?
Ksub - No.
Stanley [iCab] - Are you in more than 1 district? Also, do they give preference to CREDENTIALLED Subs?
Ksub - I am studying Spanish. I am having trouble with preterite and imperfect.
Ksub - No, just in one district.
Stanley [iCab] - Since I've not FORMALLY studied since '72, I'm SURE I confuse those 2 a LOT...
Stanley [iCab] - In what grades are you willing to sub? Flexibility in THAT area often increases one's assignments...
Stanley [iCab] - About Spanish.. if you've no bilingual classes there, what's your reason for studying Span?
Ksub - Yes, that's right. I might sign up for several more districts next year.
Stanley [iCab] - Do you have aspirations of eventually earning a credential? If so, Subbing is **THE** best prepartion I know!!
Ksub - I have a friend who is a missionary to South America. I might go with her sometime.
Stanley [iCab] - When in HS my sis began giving immunizations in S.Am. In a round about way, that's what lead to her becoming a Family Practice Doc!!
Ksub - That's great.
Stanley [iCab] - What's the highest grade for which you've subbed?
Ksub - 12th
Stanley [iCab] - Also, I think that is a **HIGHLY** admirable reason to study Español!!
Ksub - Thank you.
Stanley [iCab] - Whoa... 12th! So, is sounds like you've given your District(s) MORE than enough options to give you assignments. So WHY aren't you working as much as you'd like -- IF you had to guess??
Ksub - I think there are a lot of subs right now, and maybe it's based on who has been subbing the longest.
Stanley [iCab] - I've "access" to >200 schools [when all are in session], so I take it you are "eligible" in FAR less?
Ksub - Yes, FAR less
Stanley [iCab] - Surplus of Subs?? But, your pay is not all that high there, right?
Ksub - No, it's not. It's about 54 dollars a day.
Stanley [iCab] - In KY do you need a 4 yr degree to Sub? Or, something less?
Ksub - 64 hours
Stanley [iCab] - $54/day for about a 7 hr day, right?
Ksub - right
Stanley [iCab] - 64 semester hrs, right? So, about Jr. status?
Ksub - Yes, 64 semester hours
Stanley [iCab] - Where are YOU in the educational process? Also, are you thinking of majoring in Ed?
Ksub - I don't know if I want to go back to school or not.
Stanley [iCab] - Though it may be "technically" possible, few [if any] Subs in CA have less than a BA/BS, though that could be a degree in ANYTHING.
Stanley [iCab] - I'm 55, so I **CERTAINLY** understand not wanting to go back to school -- at least in a DEGREE program! [I'm currently taking extension courses, which commonly are on weekends & WITHOUT assignments...]
Ksub - I think I will wait a few years until I turn 60 years old, then go back to college. Tuition is free at a lot of colleges after you turn 60.
Stanley [iCab] - What did you do prior to teaching?
Ksub - I was a secretary. I really do like subbing.
Stanley [iCab] - Also, I think that's **GREAT** about free tuition for those > 60!!
Ksub - Tuition is really expensive now.
Stanley [iCab] - What would be your chances of becoming contracted @ 60 ? Also, would a degree give you more subbing opportunities &/or higher pay/day?
Stanley [iCab] - Whew, TELL me about the expense! My extension courses run about $200/semester unit!
Ksub - I really don't know. It would be higher pay.
Stanley [iCab] - I'm not sure I agree with higher SUBBING pay based upon your educational level, though I understand LOTS of places do it!
Ksub - No, not subbing. I meant if I got a teaching certificate.
Ksub - Sorry about that.
Stanley [iCab] - Would Districts there be inclined to hire a "new" CONTRACTED T who was > 60??
Ksub - I don't know about that.
Stanley [iCab] - I get "by" now because I live with my [fortunately] healthy 84 yr old dad. However, were that NOT the case, it's *VERY* doubtful whether I could cut it here -- & that's earning about 25K/yr from subbing/misc "special" teaching work!!
Ksub - What did you do before subbing?
Stanley [iCab] - [By "special" teaching work I mean things like intercession & before/after school programs which may @ a CONSIDERABLY higher rate/hr!]
Stanley [iCab] - Prior to 10/'93 our family owned San Diego's oldest restaurant [in the same location with continuous ownership.]
Ksub - Do you miss the restaurant business?
Stanley [iCab] - I worked with my parents there from '77 thru '93. Prior to that I was a Welfare Eligibility Worker & a naval Dental Technician.
Ksub - Here in Eastern Kentucky jobs are hard to get.
Stanley [iCab] - Well, I have lots of DREAMS about our restaurant, though their often SCARY ones!Seriously, though, could **ANYTHING** be nicer than working with kids?!?
Ksub - It's been good talking to you. It's getting late.
Stanley [iCab] - E Ky [excuse the weak geography] -- is that farming country, or are their coal mines in your area?
Ksub - A lot of coal mines.
Ksub - Hopefully I will remember this meeting for subs next month
Stanley [iCab] - You're QUITE a trouper keeping such hrs!If they call tomorrow, I'll be praying that you've LOTS of energy!!
Ksub - Thanks. Talk to you later. Bye.
Stanley [iCab] - I usually always post a reminder the weekend prior!
Stanley [iCab] - Buenos noches!
Stanley [iCab] - Going, going..
Stanley [iCab] - ((( poof !!! )))
