Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
San Diego Sub - Hi Stanley
Stanley - San Diego Sub, ya' still around? [Sorry, I wanted to change colors, & I'd just logged off when I saw your name… ] :-[
Stanley - Greetings, Melinda! Are you a Sub?
Stanley - Yikes… the "subfinder" is here: No WONDER I've not been getting any calls…
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Where is everyone tonight?
Stanley - Believe it or not, tommorow will be my FIRST day @ a school other than the one I've been @ since Sept 3rd!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Are you sad or anxious, Stanley?
Stanley - OldbN, hey I even brushed my teeth...
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Hey, San Diego Sub....finally someone else!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Miss BTL, seen your postings on the Sub Board!
San Diego Sub - Hello Everyone!
Stanley - A bit of both, OldbN, though the anxiety is more EAGERNESS to get "back" to the day-to-day stuff!
Miss BTL - I've noticed you, too, OldSub
Stanley - Btl & SD: ¡Hola!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, are you going to do a long term sub?
Miss BTL - I'm so pleased to see everyone. 'Tis a lovely evening for a chat.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - -What are you doing San Diego Sub...changing color?
Stanley - OldbN, no, I'm just completing consecutive 5 day, 14 day, & 7 wk assignments. Then today I did a G-4 there, & I'm returning to the same class again on Thurs.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Where in are you located Miss BTL? I am in Massachusetts!
San Diego Sub - Yes, I am having trouble with the chat, so I wanted to see if a different color might help!
San Diego Sub - I'm in San Diego (obviously)
Miss BTL - Washington, Old
San Diego Sub - I subbed at Walker in Mira Mesa today, Stanley. Nice School.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - So, Miss BTL & San Diego Sub...how goes subbing? Have you been busy?
Miss BTL - Not very busy this year.
Miss BTL -
San Diego Sub - Yes, I've been busy, and sick. Missed 3 days last week. Couldn't even drag myself to the computer!
San Diego Sub - Why aren't you busy Miss BTL?
Miss BTL - I missed a whole week due to the flu, San Diego....so I hear ya.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Miss BTL, I know what you mean...had 2 calls & then got a long term sub job. I'm doing 3rd grade & the kids are rough....swearing EVERYDAY!
San Diego Sub - OldSub--who's swearing, you or the kids?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Don't give me anything over the computer...PLEASE!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - They swear at school.....I save mine for home, LOL!
Miss BTL - I loved my week in third grade....no swearing lol
Miss BTL - Lol, San Diego
OldSubBecomesNewSub - I wouldn't mind a 3rd grade classroom.
San Diego Sub - I love 3rd graders, unless they're a tattling bunch!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Locolouie...where in NY are you?
Stanley - Oldbn, are you in an urban area? Also, Miss BTL, are they not offering you much in '02/'03?
Miss BTL - I'd rather teach the MS kids..or fifth grade at least
Locolouie in NY - Upstate NY Utica-rome area
Dr. Mac - Anyone here Have the book: Modern biology by Holt, Reinheart and winston??
OldSubBecomesNewSub - San Diego Sub, besides swearing....there is WHINING! They need you to hold their hand ALL THE TIME!
Miss BTL - Stanley, I switched school districts, which accounts for the fewer calls.
San Diego Sub - I subbed 4th grade today, and it was fun!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stanley, the school is an inner city school district. 43% of the school pop. qualifies for free or reduced lunch!
Miss BTL - Yes, OldSub, that's third grade alright, but don't let it get to you.
Locolouie in NY - I'm subbing for 3 Districts right now and they are giving me the round around about having my placement folder up to date
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Thanks Miss BTL! If I can make it in this classroom & still want to teach...I can make it anywhere!
Locolouie in NY - NY's gone crazy about identification
Miss BTL - What are you missing, Loco?
Stanley - SD, I also had G-4 today. Had most of them for a long term when they were G-2s.
Locolouie in NY - I've taught for thirty years in NM and recently retiredto NY - They want my college transcripts
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Locolouie...I started my long term sub & worked for almost a week....filling out NOTHING! I had to rush around for Dr's okay & the Human Resource ladies were NASTY!
Miss BTL - So, Stanley, was it a beautiful day. Did the G-4's remember you?
Locolouie in NY - I have a MA and k-12 /certification and they treat me like I'm some demented Animal House waco
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Askanami, where are you?
San Diego Sub - My page keeps expiring...and then I have to re-enter the chat!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - San Diego Sub, still having problems?
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Dr. Mac, where do you sub?
San Diego Sub - It was gorgeous here in San Diego today, I just got back from walking at Mission Bay.
San Diego Sub - I think my problems are better, thanks.
Miss BTL - Quit braggin', will ya, San Diego (raining in Washington, as always)
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Stop talking about a beautiful day! It rained/snowed/sleeted all weekend! Today it was a mess, temps in the 40s & some schools had NO SCHOOL!
Locolouie in NY - Today I subbed for a teacher who was out because another teacher died over the weekend- the kids were okay, except for one nutso class of demented senior boys
Locolouie in NY - It's snowing in NY
San Diego Sub - Sorry Miss BTL, I'm still sitting here with the fan on and in shorts!
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Keep the snow, Locolouie!
San Diego Sub - Wow snow!
Stanley - Miss BTL, they know me QUITE well. There's a VERY high percentage of girls, & SOME cattiness, but otherwise it was fine! Plus, their T may ALSO use me for before school math on Thurs -- an additional $40 or so if she does!!
Locolouie in NY - I moved back to NY fromNM to enjoy the Fall and experience the snow again (after 30 years of sun in NM)
San Diego Sub - Stanley, have you applied for intersession?
San Diego Sub - How are you adapting Loco?
Locolouie in NY - YOU really can't go home again-it's too different here for me- I'm fixing up the house, selling it and returning to NM
Stanley - Yes, it HAS been warmish here in San Diego…
Miss BTL - How good are you guys at keeping up to date on the latest materials, methods?
San Diego Sub - I'm from San Diego, just don't think I could adapt to driving in snow and/or sleet.
Miss BTL - I ran into a new reading program last week.
Locolouie in NY - I was spoiled at my old school - I had my rep and the kids were great. As a sub, I' m fair game again.
Miss BTL - It's called Four Square reading.
OldSubBecomesNewSub - Gotta run & prepare myself for the little rugrats tomorrow! See you on the sub board!
Stanley - Miss BTL, I've gotten QUITE a bit of training in our City Schools, which are **HEAVILY** into training their contracted Ts.
Locolouie in NY - I had to use my NY attitude on this one kid-showed him up athis own game- didn't like doing it but it was necessary
San Diego Sub - I would like to get training on new materials.
San Diego Sub - Stanley, can any sub get training? I was under the impression only longterms get the training.
GFR - Has anyone ever used automated sub calling systems?
San Diego Sub - Yes, GFR.
Miss BTL - Just when I was getting used to Six Trait writing and Four Block reading, they toss this Four Square stuff at me....sigh, good thing I'm a good catcher.
Locolouie in NY - Well, I wish everyone a happy turkey day and quiet classrooms of respectful students gottta go- Automated sub systems are the devils stepchildren
San Diego Sub - LOL Loco
Miss BTL - My new district uses it GFR
Stanley - SD, it's mainly a matter of going to the meetings when you're subbing on minimum days -- THAT kind of thing…
GFR - Do they really work?
San Diego Sub - Well, I subbed on a minimum day and the principal had all us subs (7 of us) put labels on books in the library (instead of the training).
Miss BTL - Sure, GFR.....I rather like the system calling
San Diego Sub - Yes, the sub callers work.
Bluette - how are you? I am suffering from whatever I caught at the germ factory
Stanley - GRF, I've worked with 2 different programs: "SAMS" & "Sub Finder." LUV 'em BOTH!!
Miss BTL - Has anyone had online subfinder
San Diego Sub - I have to skedaddle, I can smell dinner almost done, and hubby is making dinner, so I must go downstairs!! Love you guys! Bye now!
Bluette - I like my humans best--never had an automatic caller
Miss BTL - I just got a notice that I can access the subfinder online...haven't tried it yet, though
Miss BTL - Bye, San Diego
GFR - How do they work? My district is thinking of getting it?
Stanley - SD, don't hesitate to phone, ya' hear?!?
Bluette - must be nice to have friends in the neighborhood, Stanley
Tad - I am new to the chat room, but have been subbing for the last 6 months.
Bluette - I think locolouie is in my neighborhood, or not far from me
Miss BTL - Welcome, Tad
Stanley - Blue, yes it is! As a result of T.Net we've spoken several times on the phone!
Bluette - hi Tad, welcome to the crazy world of TNET subs
Miss BTL - Have you checked out the subboard on here, Tad?
Tad - Thanks for the welcome. I am in Richmond CA, and we use a sub-finder out here that works reasonably well. I am not sure of thte softwqare used, however.
Tad - Haven't checked out subboard yet, but intend to do so.
Stanley - Miss BTL & Blue, since you've both been on the SubBoard "a while," WHAT do you think of the recent spate of **MULTIPLE** posting names?
Miss BTL - It makes it a bit confusing when ppl post with multiple personalities.
Bluette - why can't people behave themselves??
Stanley - Tad, Richmond's in the Bay Area, right? [I'm in San Diego.]
Miss BTL - It doesn't get under my skin though, as I don't read all of the posts.
Tad - Right Stanley - Just a little North of Berkeley.
Bluette - I haven't had the time I used to have, so not reading the posts as much
Stanley - Miss BTL, with the multiple names, I have trouble discerning which ones to avoid, ya' know?
Miss BTL - I know
Bluette - it is supposed to be a board to offer support to one another, but lately...
Miss BTL - I've missed your posts, Bluette. I hope you'll post more frequently.
GFR - gotgo thanks for the input...
Miss BTL - Bye GFR
Stanley - Blue, I too have been shorter on time… [Taking classes on many Sats, it seems…]
Tad - Enjoyed the brief chat GFR
Bluette - I have many new adventures to tell, like the 7th grader who, without a word to me, helped put the chairs in place when I was on cafe duty today
Miss BTL - I haven't noticed anything too negative, but then maybe I'm just skipping all the bad posts.
Bluette - my classes are Mon and Tues nights and I am so far behind in the work
Stanley - Tad, do you have a credential? Also, how long have you been subbing? [I think I've about 1,200 days of experience.]
Miss BTL - Ah well, priorities. We understand, Bluette.
Tad - Stanley -
Bluette - Stanley, stop counting already
Tad - Stanley - Emergency ticket - - having spent the last 20 yeqars as a softwqare engineer. Subbing since last spring.
Bluette - this is my third year and I work almost all the time, some days better than others, love sped
Stanley - Blue, I like days rather than years since there is **NO** "uniform" # of days in a Sub's "year."
Bluette - HS and MS are better for me than elem, less stamina required
Miss BTL - I agree, Bluette.
Stanley - So, Tad, are you doing math in HS -- or "whatever?" Also, considering becoming credentialed? Finally, what's your day-to-day pay rate there?
Miss BTL - But I love the odd lower elem day tossed in.
Bluette - taking the little ones to PE and Art and to the bus, so much running around
Bluette - I have 2 days of elem scheduled this week
Miss BTL - Wear good shoes, Bluette.
Bluette - new sneakers!!
Stanley - Blue & BTL, other than today, I've only had 1 day this yr that WASN'T @ G-3 or lower!
Bluette - wow, you must be a strong guy!!
Miss BTL - I like fifth...they are old enough to get my jokes.
Tad - Day to day rate is $108 - long term rate is $148 per day. Definitely not great.
Miss BTL - Better than here, Tad (Washington state).
Bluette - oh Tad, not complain, I make $70/day and thats a good rate
Stanley - Blue, quite frankly, I see pros [& cons] to ALL ages. As a result, I think I tend to appreciate WHATEVER I "have," since tomorrow it will likely be something different.
Miss BTL - Good attitude Stanley. I, too, like the diversity.
Tad - IBlue - I suspect you are living in a lower cost area, but I don't feel quite so bad now. Thanks.
Miss BTL - Input wanted:
Stanley - Tad, I **LIKE** the $40 increase for long terms! Here we go from but $115.?? to $129.??, though that DOES start on Day 6.
Miss BTL - Ready for a bit of a story, gang?
Tad - Unless we start the class, the rate goes up after 20 days.
Bluette - sure BTL, what going on in your world?
Miss BTL - I call the district I signed up for this year my "new" district, but really it's very old. I subbed there about six years ago.....
Stanley - /ooó-ah/, Miss BTL! [One of the few Vietnamese words I still remember, it means "Yes!!]
Tad - I have to get back to my "Technology" class - which is one of the requirements for a CA credential. Good to talk to all of you.
Miss BTL - Then found a district that called me more, so I stopped subbing for the "old" district....anyway, now I'm back to this district, and.....
Stanley - Hmmm… what the departure 6 yrs ago?
Stanley - Tad, best to YOU, my friend!!
Miss BTL - The principal, the secretary, and a teacher all passed me in the hall (at different times) and oohed and ahhed that I was back.
Miss BTL - I subbed in their school maybe three days six years ago....how could they possibly remember me?
Stanley - THAT'S a nice sign, Miss BTL! My kudos!!
Miss BTL - I'm still not sure if it was that I made such a good impression or the other kind. Thoughts?
Stanley - Is the District smallish? Do you think that Human Resources tipped them off??
Miss BTL - It's a medium-sized distr, Stanley
Miss BTL - My ego is so strong that I'm determined to take it as a compliment, but I was a bit taken aback that all three remembered li'l ol' me.
Stanley - I'd not suspect anything negative -- @ least without cause. Perhaps it's just because there is SO precious little "logevity" in most subbing "careers"…
Miss BTL - We've touched on this topic before, but I have to ask you two.....
Miss BTL - Do you find yourself borrowing ideas from the classrooms?
Stanley - What's a "medium-sized distr" to a Washingtonian?
Miss BTL - I've begun to borrow a bit too much.
Miss BTL - 5 elementary schools, Stanley
Stanley - **ABSOLUTELY** on the borrowing! Problem is that I seldom remember to USE the ideas when appropriate...
Miss BTL - How about worksheets? Do you find yourself nipping the extras?
Stanley - Whoa… 5 is "medium" there?!? At any rate, I'm **SURE** that is small enough for Human Resources to "tip off" that particular site.
Stanley - I used to nab the worksheets, though not much anymore since I've **NO** idea how to organize them for future use. However, graphic organizers…, & I **LOVE** to E-mail myself copies of wall charts I see!
Miss BTL - sings "Just the two of us...."
Stanley - Too bad you can't play Grover Washington's soprano sax rather than singing!
Miss BTL - What kind of wall charts and graphic organizers?
Miss BTL - Is that a knock on my singing voice?
Miss BTL - Welcome mlarz.
Stanley - San Diego City Schools is **HEAVILY** into reading-related, T created charts as part of the **MANDATED** "room environment." Since I may lack the SPECIFIC training for what they want, better to steal, uh, "borrow," right?
jmb - i'll take anything i can get. i also correct em for the teacher when necessary
Stanley - jmb, taking anything you can get?!?
jmb - does anyone else do that, correct teahcers' errors?
jmb - excuse, teachers'. as regards handouts, worksheets, etc., yes
Stanley - Miss BTL, not so much a comment on your singing as a statement of longing for the departed Grover Washington, Jr.
Stanley - What do you mean by correcting the errors? What KIND of errors, & at what grade level?
jmb - any type of error -- spelling errors, grammatical errors, factual errors
jmb - i see them at every level beyond early primary
jmb - i have no problem correcting them. i see it as a service to the school and the students. but it often surprises me that the teachers are resentful
Stanley - Hi, sandteach6! jmb, IF I corrected an error, I'd be **VERY** low key about it. Subs coming across as "uppity" **REALLY** hacks most Ts off!!
jmb - i simply fix it. if a word is misspelled on the board, i correct it, etc. if the teacher notices & thinks i'm uppity, perhaps he/she ought to be less concerned about personality judgments and more concerned about what they DON'T know
Stanley - I'm in my 7th [*FULL*] yr of subbing. NUMEROUS contracted Ts have leveled with me. I've not heard **ONE** that said he/she liked being "shown up" by a Sub.
jmb - why have you been subbing for so long?
jmb - i can't think of too many benefits to it -- only the dubious benefit of working "for oneself" and not having to take any work home
Stanley - I'd very likely do what you've just described. However, SOME Subs "blab" about what they change -- or "rat" to site admins!
jmb - i only worry about myself. and there are enough teachers & schools that request me
Stanley - jmb, I'm in San Diego, an area which RECRUITS out of state in order to save money. If you're 55 & not pushy [or even if you ARE], the prospects are **NOT** good.
jmb - i know all about the lack of jobs statewide. i thought teaching was going to be a second career. what a laugh. i have 2 calif. credentials, a masters, another language -- and i can't get a job
Stanley - I too NORMALLY have no trouble finding subbing gigs. However, we're each but ONE tiny step away from having to call in our markers!
jmb - what do you mean? what are you afraid of?
Stanley - You're bilingual? Also, what part of CA, & are you single or multiple subj?
jmb - spanish; i also know enough french, and some hebrew! norcal, but locale doesn't matter if you check out the state stats. i have a multiple & a single, english
jmb - i teach reading on the side, and also call on my first career, as an editor, to help pull me through.
Stanley - "Afraid" is not a descriptor I'd use. It's more leery. E.g., I've known 2 Subs [with over 15 YEARS of experience] who were let go because of a total of FOUR negative evaluations or incidences.
jmb - at this point, i'd like to go back into publishing
Stanley - Do you have a BCLAD? Yo hablo, mas or menos, pero no suficiente para un "BCLAD."
jmb - i've never been evaluated by anyone with any power or authority. i've evaluated schools and redlined a few. in one case, an investigation is pending
jmb - yo tampoco, por lastima. pero tengo mi CLAD
jmb - y ya es mas que tenian muchos maestros!
Stanley - In the 2 incidences I mentioned these Subs traipsed on the edge. However, even though 1 was multi-lingual, & the other specialized in MISERABLE schools, both were summarily dismissed!
jmb - i never liked sd that much, anyway!
Stanley - Well, a BCLAD would still get you somewhere in San Diego, & [I believe] **ANY** credential is "gold" in L.A., where very likely *I'm* headed for '03/'04!
jmb - as i said, this wasn't what i was counting on. i went back to school because i decided it was better than looking for another newspaper job, and because i swallowed all that idealistic hogwash. now, i'm smarter and a lot poorer, and unlikely to stick around teaching
Stanley - I've spent 45 yrs in San Diego, though L.A. makes **MUCH** better financial sense, something I PROBABLY can't ignore @ age 55…
jmb - from what i've seen of the profession in 3 norcal counties, i wonder how many teachers got their jobs. maybe mediocrity really is a job skill
jmb - i lived in l.a. for 15 years; went to sd often then. moved to sf, then to sonoma, now i'm elsewhere
Stanley - jmb, & ya' know, someone with YOUR life experiences would make a **FAR** better "blend" in the schools!!
jmb - of course i know that. but life experience doesn't matter, except as something to which admins pay lip service
Stanley - For me the decision is "clear," if I can still get into L.A. Unified. I could start there @ 57K, Vs. 38K here -- **IF** I were to land something…
Stanley - Where you are do you see recruiting out of state in ORDER to get credentialed Ts with **NO** post grad units? That's **ENDEMIC** here in San Diego -- & for **NO** reason other than saving $$!!
jmb - i've enjoyed chatting, stanley. if you wish to keep up an email correspondence, perhaps it would be professionally enlightening for both of us. i've got to go. reach me, if you'd like, at judithbackover@yahoo.com. i want to hear more about l.a.
jmb - no, what i see here are districts run on the backs of subs, for the same reason, $$$
Stanley - Enjoyed it also!
Stanley - Going, going…
Stanley - {{{{ Poof !! }}}}
