wv - hello, where should we begin
wv - Is anyone here a teacher in the Title 1 program or an aide?
Title 1 chat - It's time for the chat to begin
b - I am a title one tutor grade 1-5
Charlotte - Hi, B... I am a Spanish teacher in a Title I School
b - What do you mean by a Title I school?
Charlotte - A school considered Title I... Children at risk?
Charlotte - I am not familiar with thet term because I am not american and it's the first time I see that term...
Reader - Does any Title teacher do small group guided reading in kindergarten
b - We have a Title I program, but I've never heard us referred to as a Title I school
b - At our school Title does not include the Kindergarten students.
Charlotte - Well... maybe I am no right with the term... What is a Title I program?
Reader - Becoming a Title 1 school depends on your number of free and reduced lunches
Charlotte - For exmaple?
Charlotte - It means when children do notpay for their meals?
Reader - If you have 40% of your students receiving free or reduce lunches you qualify as a school wide Title 1 school.
b - It is a program to help at-risk students. I thought most schools had a title program, tutoring at risk students. You receive more money if you have more free or reduced price lunches.
Charlotte - TMost of my students receive free or reduce lunches...
Reader - If you have less than 40% than only students qualifying as at risk are suppose to receive services.
b - Didn't know that, about the 40%\
Reader - In a school wide program a Title teacher can work with any student in the building
Reader - Our school is a school wide school.
Charlotte - No... because I came to USA with an exchange program and there is not that kind of schools in my country
Reader - We have four title teachers who can work with all students inthe building.
b - We are not. We have a Title teacher and two Title tutors who work with a small percentage of students.
Charlotte - You are talking about Teacher Specialist, Reader?
Charlotte - You are talking about Teacher Specialist, Reader?
Reader - We also have 5 teaching assistants who work mainly with the struggling readers
Reader - you, a reading specialist.
Reader - I mean, yes, a reading specialist.
b - This year our Title teacher goes into a first grade classroom of all at risk students and works with the regular teacher
Reader - Oh, the poor classroom teacher.
Charlotte - We have a Teacher specialist by grade, from K through 5
Reader - Having an entire class of at risk readers must really make for a stressful year.
b - Reader, How large is your school?
Reader - It's a pre-k through 5 building with 875 students.
b - I'll have to ask the teacher. She does have a small class. Twelve, I think with two teachers.
Reader - 12 students would be great!
Reader - Our classes range from 17 to 22.
b - Wow! We're Pr-k to 5 about 500 students.
Reader - We have 6 classes of each grade level.
b - Most of our classes are 22-26
Reader - whoa--large class size!!!
b - Last year we had four third grade classes with over 30 students in each.
Reader - Next year we will have 7 kindergarten and first grades
b - This year they hired an extra fourth grade teacher and next year they will hire a new fifth grade teacher. That was way too many.
Reader - Has anyone looked into the class size reduction grants?
b - How do you find out about the grants?
Reader - check with your state board. I'm in Illinois and there were grants put out by the state board. They could be federal grants also.
b - Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm in Ohio.
