Dave MontrealCan - Good evening and welcome
lolly - Hello, I have a visually impaired student in my classroom. He has, I believe, septic dysplasia...spelled right???
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly does he have adaptive technical aids to help him in class?
lolly - I am not sure what that is. He can see but often tires from "seeing". I have a slant board for him.
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly does he use special reading glasses or cc tv or anything like that what grade do you teach?
lolly - No technical aids. I teach second grade in a small rural community.
Number404 - lolly, I looked it up. I am hoping this link works: http://www.stepstn.com/cgi-win/nord.exe?proc=Redirect&type=rdb_sum&id=496.htm
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly if you are in the Us please copy down this toll free number of the American Council of the Blind in Washington Dc 1 800 424 8666
lolly - Thanks, I will look up the link and the address.
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly where are you located and do you hav emany support services there?
lolly - I am in Idaho. Recently I received word that I would be getting books on tape and a special tape recorder. I have been recording books for him. I do have a Special Ed teacher who helps him with his math. She has not taught before so I sometimes worry about the quality of what he is getting but she tries. He is a wonderful little boy who wants to learn. This is the first year that he has told his mom he likes school.
Dave MontrealCan Lolly you sound like a very devoted teacher to be reading for him on tape yourself that is wonderful
Dave MontrealCan - If you call the American Council of the Blind toll free they can also help with materials he may need as well
lolly - Thank you for the chat and the sites.
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly ask about the closed circuit tv for him this will help him read
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly have you heard of a cc tv?
lolly - No I have not.
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly a cc tv has a cammera that faces downward toward a tray at the bottom of the tv the person places a book on the tray and the cammera enlargens the text to hoerver large or small they need to focus the text for their reading comfort many students use this device who are sight impaired
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly this will allow the student to sit back in his chair and look at the tv screen and read the large print without straining
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly does he use a computer?
lolly - Oh, yes. We talked about this in our CST meetings. I guess the problem is that because of the septic dyplasia he has memory problems. He is receiving special help with a reading program for 30 minutes a day. It involves visualization as well as mouth formation. He loves the computer and I have sent home a typing program for him to use. He has told me his mom loaded it but I have my doubts that he practices. I do have him dictate his stories, journals, and other writing on the computer, enlarge the print, and he writes on special dark lined paper I have made for him. I just keep wondering...what else can I do?
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly if you like i will exchange emails with you you can email me at melanson@teachers.net whenever you need to ask a queastion or need help I am always here
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly if he had a cc tv he could read regular books as the cammera would enlarge the print for him to his comfortable size he needs to see it
lolly - Thank you. My e-mail is lorrclar@hotmail.com
Number404 - I am still here but mostly lurking.
lolly - Are you an educator, doctor, specialist?
Number404 - I am going to do a few things here. Bye, lolly and Dave.
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly I am sight impaired myself and went through the regular school system from K right through university
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly I am a consultant I give workshops and sensitization training to elementary teachers about mainstreaming and integrating sight impoaired children into the regular classroom
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly I started my own small business giving this type of training as i could not get a job in private industry no companies wanted to hire me it seems
Dave MontrealCan - but teachers have valued my knowledge and have been so special to me I love working with elementary teachers it is very rewarding for me
lolly - How wonderful. I feel that I am forturnate to have this child in my classroom. He has been raised to believe he can do anything especially take things apart. It is kind of funny what he does sometimes. He is well liked by his peers. I don't think they always "think" about his vision impairment. I wish you continued success.
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly I majored in englishj and minored in sociology at university
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly also if you like at some point I would be pleased to send you a tape of a previous seminar I have given
Dave MontrealCan - Lolly I have also written an article for the teachers net Gazette as well
lolly - I am logging off but will keep your email if I have any more questions or just need some support.. I am sure I could learn from your tape.
Dave MontrealCan - Lollt do u want the gazette link to my article?
lolly - Yes what is the gazette link?
Dave MontrealCan - it is  http://www.teachers.net/gazette/FEB01/melanson.html
lolly - I am glad I joined the chat. The dogs are barking so I must see what is going on. Good night!
Dave MontrealCan - Thank you to teachers net for allowing me to have this session this evening and thank you all for comming tonight
