CherylRistow/aggie - ((((((Marti!)))))) Hi there!
CherylRistow/aggie - BTW-- ((((()))))))) are hugs!
Lisa/1/NC - we're a single track school -- everyone has been off for the last 3 weeks -- oh, except we do remediation during intersession
Lisa/1/NC - hey Marti
CherylRistow/aggie - Lisa-- we may go to a modified year round schedule next year. I'm hoping we do.
CherylRistow/aggie - Now--- if anyone needs any chatting help, just give a holler!
Marti - Well I am here and I have never done this before so beware
CherylRistow/aggie - ((((Pezzziie!))))))
Lisa/1/NC - Cheryl -- just make sure they take input from the teachers on what would be a good schedule -- this one isn't great -- we've basically been on full since mid-October -- not counting the pitence they gave us at Christmas
pez - (((aggie))))) Came to give you moral support
CherylRistow/aggie - You're doin' fine, Marti! You need any help, just give a yell! Pez here is a K teacher--- she is doing Building Blocks for the first time.
CherylRistow/aggie - Hiya Cece!!!!! Welcome back, Roby.
Lisa/1/NC - hey Cece -- I didn't see you come in
CherylRistow/aggie - Hi Cher! Welcome!
Cece - Hi all! How is everyone?
pez - And very happy with Building Blocks. My lowest child is recognizing sight words before he knows all his alphabet
Cher - Never ever done this before either--Hi!
CherylRistow/aggie - I'm good, Cece! And you?
Dave MontrealCan - Hi everyone what a wonderful book you all have produced![]()
CherylRistow/aggie - Cher--- are you one of the authors? Perhaps we should all put an "A" after our names????? hehehehe--- little leadership conference humor there!
Cher - Marti--I am glad I am not the only newbie here!
Cece - Pretty good...only a couple of days until spring break. I'm looking forward to a little R&R.
CherylRistow/aggie - ((((((((((((((((Cerridwen!!!!!))))))))))))))))))))) Hey, y'all! this is a buddy from my school!!!!!!
Cerridwen/1/CA - Hi Cheryl!

CherylRistow/aggie - So-- does anyone have any stories to tell of what's happened since the book has come out? Have you all seen it at your local teacher's supply store?
Marti - Hey the picture looks great. If any othe authrs want a hard copy. e-mail me privately and we can work out the details
CherylRistow/aggie - We are glad to have you here tonight, Cher!
CherylRistow/aggie - Hiya kay fulton!
Kathleen - Hi everyone!
pez - I have a new boy in my room. Came from Guatemala 2 weeks ago and doesn't speak a word of English. On Friday, he read his snetence from the predictable chart.
CherylRistow/aggie - http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors.jpg There's the link for the picture!
Marti - Hi Kay--I think you and I will see each other on June 22 in Calif.
Cece - I haven't seen it yet, I've given a few copies away, and of course my kids at school think I'm big stuff. I think they are more impressed than the adults I know because they know how important the authors of books are![]()
Cher - This thing goes faaaassssster than I can read!
CherylRistow/aggie - (((((((((Welcome Kathleen!)))))))) Now is that Tnet Kathleen--- or my friend from school?
Lisa/1/NC - Pez -- 4Blocks and Building Blocks is so great for ELD kids
Kathleen - What is it like to pick up a book and see your name listed among the authors??
CherylRistow/aggie - What's up on the 22nd, Marti?
Dave MontrealCan - Has anyone tried Four Blocks with a sight impaired child and what wre the results?
CherylRistow/aggie - Hi mira.
Kathleen - It's Teachers.Net Kathleen, your friend from here![]()
pez - Cece, what is your chapter about?
pez - Lisa, i agree
CherylRistow/aggie - Kathleen--- it's pretty neat!I wanted to yell in the teachers supply store when I saw it!
Kathleen - Cece, that's wonderful, about your students being impressed!
Marti - I believe Kay will be out here to speak a Ginny's school.
Kathleen - kay, just leave the Send to: box set to room
Cece - My chapter is about 4 Blocks and Georgia...mainly about my struggles with teaching writing and how four blocks helped me
CherylRistow/aggie - My students were most impressed w/the book..........w/the pictures of Pat and Dottie on the camels on the back cover! LOL!
mira - hello everyone - I haven't gotten through the entire book yet but have loved what I've read
Kathleen - aggie, I hope you told the people at the teachers supply store that you're an author of that book
CherylRistow/aggie - I did, Kathleen...... they weren't real impressed, tho, I don't think.....
pez - kathleen, they need to be invited to a book signing
CherylRistow/aggie - Hi mira! I missed your arrival.
Marti - My students as well were impresed. They went home and told there parents and of course that cased some fun commotion
mira - Cece I definitely need to read your chapter as I struggle with writing the most
! - Did everyone get the news out to the school district office so they can brag about you?
Cece - Mira, it is chapter 2, easy to spot!
Dave MontrealCan - I ordered the book from a local bookstore here in Montreal and have been reading it it is a wonderful book and I was excited for aggie since she is a regular chatter here in tnet
Lisa/1/NC - we had an author's tea at my school -- with all of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders -- they were more impressed than the adults at my school
mira - Kay Fulton hello this is Geneva from Chesapeake - logged on as mira - things going great here since your visit!
CherylRistow/aggie - I did, indeed, Kat and ! I've been asked to develop a workshop on 4 blocks for next school year.
! - TEACHERS.NET SALUTES THE AUTHORS OF TRUE STORIES FROM 4 BLOCKS CLASSROOMS! We are proud of all of you!
Cerridwen/1/CA - Neat! i didn't know that!
Cece - Lisa, that's neat!
CherylRistow/aggie - Thank you very much, Teacher's Net! You know Tnet is mentioned a lot in the book! I told Bob he needs to get a copy.
CherylRistow/aggie - yes, Cerridwen! I got mail from Janet Steger--- annnnnnd! I get PAID for it! Whoooooo-hooooooo!
Kathleen - Great, aggie!
CherylRistow/aggie - Yeah--- be careful, tho, of the tea cups w/the umbrellas in 'em, Mary...... they've been spiked!
Lisa/1/NC - Cece -- unfortunately I had to remind my principal that I too was an author -- so she quickly invited me -- I just love that she forgot especially since I had just given her a signed copy of the book
Cece - I had one of my kids from last year telling everyone to buy the book. I offered to make him my agentBTW in 2nd grade he is reading Farm Boy, a 300 page book!!
Cher - So Aggie, not being a "blockhead: yet (heeHee), when are inservices in San Diego?
CherylRistow/aggie - Welcome, Csquare01!
Mary/PA - Hello to all you great teachers!
kay fulton - I hope I figure this out!
CherylRistow/aggie - How sad, Lisa!
Cece - No respect, huh Lisa! Thank God for the kids, or we'd really be depressed!
Dave MontrealCan - Has anyone tried Four Blocks with a sight impaired child and what were the results?
Csqare01 - Thanks
Cerridwen/1/CA - Wow!
CherylRistow/aggie - Gosh, Cher--- I don't have a clue! I know Pat was down there last Spring-- check w/BER to see if she's coming again.
Lisa/1/NC - Cece -- the kids have been wonderful -- telling their parents about the book -- I've had parents wanting to read the book
mira - We need someone desperately for just the writing block - Cece do you do inservices?
CherylRistow/aggie - Does anyone have the website for BER?
Cece - Dave, I haven't tried it, but interestingly a teacher at a workshop in Ringgold GA was asking me the same question. (About sight impaired). I told her it was probably a new thing, but Pat and Dottie would definitely want to hear about how it works!
Kathleen - kay, we see your message now![]()
Cece - Yes, mira, I've only done them in Georgia so far, but would be willing to travelWhere are you located?
CherylRistow/aggie - The only think I've heard about using 4 blocks w/a sight impaired child is that you shouldn't laminate the word wall words---- there's too much glare.
CherylRistow/aggie - I'm gonna get the link for BER--- BRB......
kay fulton - Marti..I am looking forward to my CA visit
pez - Dave, I had a sight impaired child and I made sure he had a copy of the word wall in a folder at his table so he would be able to refer to it
Dave MontrealCan - Cece I am sight impaired myself and give workshops on mainstreaming sight impaired children into the regular classroom so was just wondering about that interesting
mira - Ohio - Kay has been here for our first inservice - we are struggling with writing - 1st grade mostly
kay fulton - Geneva, Good to always read your messages on the ring. I did so enjoy my time in Ohio
mira - 4 blocks is really catching fire in Ohio
Cece - I teach first grade. Email me at btillman@farmerstel.com and I'll see what I can do.
Marti - Kay I think you speak in the morning and I am doing something in the pm. It will be great seeing you again. But we will see what happens
CherylRistow/aggie - Hmmmmm..... couldn't find it..... but I think, cher, it's http://www.ber.org
mira - We'd love to have you back Kay
Marcia/1-2/Ca - Hi guys
CherylRistow/aggie - Marti--- where are you presenting?
kay fulton - Mira, I continue to see primary teachers struggle with the writing block. I'm working on a presentation
mira - I'll contact you Cece
CherylRistow/aggie - Hi Marcia! Welcome!
Cher - Thank you, Aggie!
pez - Our principal and AP were so impressed with K, that they went out and bought 4 Blocks books for the 1st and 2nd grade teachers. My sister does 4 Blocks in her 2nd grade class
Mary/PA - aggie, that's is, I just tested it
! - Look what our guru Mary did, allowing the authors to tell her which number they are so we can post identities: http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors_indent.jpg
CherylRistow/aggie - Click on that, Cher---- I think that's it.
Mary/PA - You thought correctly
CherylRistow/aggie - Thanks, Mary!
Marcia/1-2/Ca - Guess what? I became a grandma yesterday
CherylRistow/aggie - http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors.jpg Author's pictures if anyone hasn't seen!
mira - We have discovered the more we learn the more there is to learn - what about you guys?
CherylRistow/aggie - Woweeeeeeee, Marcia!!!!!! How EXCITING!!!!!! Details!?
Cece - YEAH Marcia!
Marcia/1-2/Ca - baby girl--Layla Janae....6 pounds...born to my ....daughter..19
kay fulton - Mira, I like to work in Ohio because my Mother lives in Ashland
CherylRistow/aggie - Yes, mira! I know I'm constantly trying new things, changing details, adding stuff--- I truly love teaching this way.
Cece - Definitely, mira, I am working on getting more organized and systematic about my four blocks. It's really hard for me!
mira - Kentucky Kay?
Marcia/1-2/Ca -unmarried daughter
pez - The best thing is no dittos
mira - Yes for no dittos!!!
mira - Ok how do I identify you guys in that photo? I only know Kay.
Cece - This year has really been hard work for me, with a maternity leave and a more challenging group. I am really beginning to see big payoffs with my strugglers and want to shout for joy!
kay fulton - Mira, No Ashland, Ohio
pez - I'm finding that my kids have more time in centers and they all congregate around the writing center.
room 29 - I work with Cheryl and she is the best. She is a great teacher and I love having her as another first grade teacher. I am so proud of you!!
Marcia/1-2/Ca - Hey! you down in S. Ca...I am coming down next week to see my sister...anyone want to meet for lunch
Mary/PA - What reading series are you all working around, or incorporating into 4 Blocks?
CherylRistow/aggie - If you would like to tell us which one you are, look at the authors pic---http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors_indent.jpg-- and tell us which number you are.
Cerridwen/1/CA - room 29? it's room 31!
Kathleen - In about 20 minutes I'll announce the winner of the drawing for free registration for the next Leadership conference.
Dave MontrealCan - I am dealing with Argo Bookshop here in Montreal it is a small store that deals mainly with educational materials and the gentleman was very interested in the book and interested in how i found out about it![]()
CherylRistow/aggie - Mary--- I use Scholastic Literacy Place and think it works pretty well.
Lisa/1/NC - what specifically are you doing Cece with your strugglers? I have a couple who continue to struggle even with lots of extra support -- and when the other 16 kids are reading above grade level
Cece - We use Harcourt Signatures
mira - Is that far from me Kay?
pez - Our district utilizes Phonological Zoo, Rigby and Wright Books
Marti - Marcia where are you going to be in S.Ca.?
CherylRistow/aggie - ((((((((((((((((OMG!!!))))))))))))))))) (((((((((Room 29!!!!1))))))))))) You said you couldn't be here!
Cerridwen/1/CA - Ya, room 29...is dinner over??
CherylRistow/aggie - How was dinner, Room 29...?![]()
Mary/PA - Cece, how is Harcourt working with 4 Blocks?
Marcia/1-2/Ca - next week...Wed -Sun... In El Monte/San Gabriel.
Cece - I'm meeting with coaching groups twice a day... once at the beginning of SSR and once after lunch.
kay fulton - Mira, Ashland is between Cleveland and Columbus
mira - We have the old Macmillan - works great for literature in guided
Marti - That's not far from me. e-mail me and maybe we can work something out.
mira - Kay a little drive then but not like from here to where you are!
Cece - Lisa, I also dug out an old basal and we are doing pick a page in it for our after lunch bunch. This really gives them motivation to practice because they are only having to practice one page.
kay fulton - Marti, How are intermediate teachers implementing in your school?
Lisa/1/NC - I guess I'll have to get some coaching groups in my schedule
pez - The other nice thing about B Blocks is no more Letter of the Week.
Lisa/1/NC - Cece -- how many kids are in these groups?
Dave MontrealCan - Ok all i have to go here but wanted to drop in and congradualte everyone on a wonderful book and i really enjoyed reading it
Cece - Mary, I use the literature I like and leave out what I don't. I don't use the workbooks, just design the lessons around the text.
CherylRistow/aggie - Lisa--- mine kinda looked at me like I was nuts or something when I tried it! LOL! I've got QUIIIIIIITE a group tho--- as Cerridwen and room 29 can attest to!
Mary/PA - Do any of you have Reading Recovery as well? If so, do you see rapid accelleration?
Marti - I am really the only 4 blocker at my school. Some people are dabbling with aspect ofthe blocks. But that is in primary only.
CherylRistow/aggie - Thanks, Dave! See ya in a bit!
Cerridwen/1/CA - Yes, QUITE a group...that's one way of putting it!
Kathleen - Goodbye Dave!
Cece - Lisa, I have 3-5 kids, rotating. They really want to be in the group. It is mostly my average and lows
CherylRistow/aggie - Mary--- we don't have RR at all at my school--- wish we did!
mira - Yes we have reading recovery - the acceleration isn't as obvious with 4 blocks - all kids are higher now!! yeah!!
Cece - bye dave
Lisa/1/NC - Cheryl -- I have an interesting group as well -- my low 4 have remained there despite all of the extra services they receive
CherylRistow/aggie - I still have 3-4 lows--- but I agree w/Mira-- they are much higher than in years past.
mira - the second time kids in reading recovery were between Level 10 and 12 starting out
pez - I had to fill out a struggling student/summer school/potential retainee list this week and couldn't even put my lowest students down because they weren't low enough
! - This chat is sponsored by Apples n Acorns, supplier of all 4-Blocks materials http://www.applesandacorns.com
Cece - Lisa, I've also gone to the baggies for SSR and I'm really after my avg/lows to pick on level text. If they haven't read the books in their bag on the day they come up to trade, tough luck. It is a constant struggle but my persistance is beginning to pay off
mira - great for you pez
CherylRistow/aggie - http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors_indent.jpg Here's the pic again-- I am number 21, btw.
Lisa/1/NC - I guess my 4 lows are so much more obvious because of the growth of the rest of the class -- those low 4 move soooooo slowly
Mary/PA - mira, that is high for second round!! Good going!
Lisa/1/NC - Cece -- and I've gone back to baskets![]()
Marti - My low have also remained low. But they are making progress. You know it is thrilling when you see progress. One of mylowest who has many issues, comprehension being one--But when he starts saying I am making a connection and it makes sense you just want to shout for joy.
Cece - I'm #6 and look slightly addled in the pic!
mira - Mary - I know we were really suprised -
CherylRistow/aggie - I do book baskets--- but once they have gone to an area of the room to read they are forbidden to move again unless I ask them to. That's helped a lot.
Lisa/1/NC - when Dottie Hall was in my classroom about a month ago, she said "you went back to baskets?"
Cece - Lisa--my strugglers just can't handle all the choice in baskets.
kay fulton - Marti, When you see progress in your students it validates our teaching
! - If you find your number in the picture you could e-mail mary@teachers.net (Mary/PA) to identify yourself
Cece - You gotta do what works for you, and what works today might not tomorrow!
mira - ok I'm connecting names to faces -
Marti - You got it kay. Help I can't get back to the picture tosee what number i am.
mira - You're right about that Cece - different kids different strategies
Lisa/1/NC - My strugglers are the only ones who still have book bags -- the others don't seem to notice since they are going through quite a few books during SSR
Cece - I see so much more progress from my lows! Although they still aren't where I'd like, they are farther than they would be if I did the fixed ability groups.
mira - so in those bags, are you putting just instructional level for those kids?
Lisa/1/NC - Mira -- I put instructional level and below in those bags
Cece - Yes, mira, I have 5 groups, and on group 1's day, those kids conference with me and I check to see if they have read/comprehend, and then we trade out books.
CherylRistow/aggie - That's a real good idea, Lisa-- I'm gonna remember it for next year.
mira - I just got my tubs organized - lots of work
Life/retired - *showing support for my author friend*
CherylRistow/aggie - Hi Christie! Welcome!
CherylRistow/aggie - Welcome Life!
kay fulton - Marti, I'm # 22, Lupe # 7 Norma #5
Cece - One brag I had this week, a little struggler who has really worked got to get a Henry and mudge book this week!!! I was so thrilled for him![]()
pez - Hi Life
Life/retired - Thanks...great ideas..
CherylRistow/aggie - Hi Linda-- glad you could make it tonight!
CherylRistow/aggie - ((((((((((Dusty!))))))))))
Christie - hello! i need help remembering what the 4 block method is
mira - So then are all your books leveled? All of mine aren't - have trouble finding levels for them all
Life/retired - hey..
Marti - I need the addy again for the pic. The one I used doesn't work for me
Lisa/1/NC - they need the easier books to build fluency -- so they can build comprehension -- some author said that 80% of everything children read should be easy for them -- I forget who said that -- Trelease perhaps?
Dusty - Hi! Just saw this great group of people discussing my favorite way of teaching. I have a question. (((aggie)))))) You are really moving up in the world! A discussion leader! I'm so proud.![]()
Mary/PA - http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors_indent.jpg
CherylRistow/aggie - Well, Christie--- it's a method of delivering Language Arts instruction. You spend 30-40 minutes a day on each of the following: SSR, Guided Reading, Working w/Words, and Writer's Workshop.
Cece - No mira, I'm just one of those weird people who keeps lots of info in my head. I have my books organized by topics/authors/etc. and can match kids with levels and interests as we go. Strange, I know, but it works for me
CherylRistow/aggie - Hehehehe, Dusty!
Christie - SSR would be self selected??
Cece - Lisa, I think it is Richard Allington in his new book.
CherylRistow/aggie - yes, Christie.
mira - Wow - I wish I could do that Cece -
Dusty - I have the same question mira. I have been leveling books but can't find a lot of the levels. Does anyone have a good place to look on the web?
Christie - yeah!! i do remember something from college.
Mary/PA - without numbers - http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors.jpg
Christie - is it as hard to teach as it sounds?
CherylRistow/aggie - Dusty--- I might-- I'll brb.
Lisa/1/NC - yep -- it is Allington -- thanks Cece!
mira - I've even checked several site Dusty - still no luck on some
! - A message from our sponsor, Lori of Apples 'n' Acorns, "Thank you to all 4 Blocks authors for everything you do to move students along the road to becoming capable readers!"
Lisa/1/NC - Mary -- I'm 16 -- didn't realize that I can barely be seen though
Cece - I love to read, Mira, any book, kids, adults, magazines, cereal boxes... and I have about 3000 books in my room, but can't find the time to level. I just read them!
Lisa/1/NC - Christie -- 4Blocks IS hard work -- but the results are powerful!
Dusty - mira- i did find one on www.readinglady.com It was the last site under her links for leveling books. there were a lot there.
CherylRistow/aggie - ask and ye shall receive! http://expage.com/page/kikiteachersleveledbooklinks There ya go, Dusty!
Lisa/1/NC - but then again Christie -- teaching is hard work
CherylRistow/aggie - Well, how nice of Lori, Teachers.Net!
Mary/PA - Lisa, you should have worn some really high heels that day
Cece - Christie, it is hard, but great and...No Dittos! No millions of papers to grade. It's a great way to teach
mira - I've given up on leveling them all - I just do a ballpark on them
Lisa/1/NC - or found a different spot Mary![]()
CherylRistow/aggie - HI Connie and anyone else I've missed.
Linda - Thanks for having the authors tea--I'm #18 in the picture.
Dusty - Thanks aggie. I'll bookmark that site.
Christie - i know that. i have an interview tomorrow for a 2nd grade class. the lowest i've taught had been 5th and that was student teaching. i'm just trying to refresh on some things before i go in
Cyna - <----uses the AR ATOS levels for her classroom library. "Even if you don't do AR, the levels are pretty good."
Connie/NC - Are there any 2nd year teachers from NC here?
mira - Lisa what no. are you in the picture? You must be short like me?
CherylRistow/aggie - Oh! I remember you, Linda! I'm number 21.
Lisa/1/NC - Connie -- I teach 1st in NC
CherylRistow/aggie - Thanks, Cyna! Good idea!
Lisa/1/NC - Mira -- I'm #16 -- you can barely see me
Life/retired - Thanks for those two sites...I'm passing them on ....
Marti - Wel i don't know my number but i am the short one next to Pat C.
mira - ok - now I can't get back to that picture -
Lisa/1/NC - Connie -- this is my first year in NC -- but not my first year in teaching![]()
CherylRistow/aggie - You're number 4, Marti.
Mary/PA - http://teachers.net/teacher-pics/true_authors_indent.jpg
CherylRistow/aggie - How long have you taught, Lisa? 14 years for me.
Cece - Cute, Marti! We should do a correlation between height and effectiveness as teachers! We shorties have alot to offer!![]()
Marti - Thanks Cheryl. I still can't get out there.
CherylRistow/aggie - Now that y'all have seen how easy it is to chat, you'll have to visit the chatroom here at Teachers.Net more often!
Cerridwen/1/CA - LOL! I'm a shortie too!
dusty - I've gotta go. Nice meeting you all. Hey aggie...keep up the good work, buddy!
CherylRistow/aggie - Yes, you are, Cerridwen!
mira - Lisa only the top of your head is showing!
Cece - Marti, send some warm weather my way! It is cold here in the south. I'm hoping it will warm up for spring break next week.
Christie - thanks for your help!
Cerridwen/1/CA -![]()
