naneb - Hi Marcia/1st/GA - hi nan simon - hello Marcia/1st/GA - I was just working on typing up our thanksgiving story that the kids wrote. naneb - I am doing book clubs with books about the pilgrims and thanksgiving Marcia/1st/GA - did you read NC Wyeth's thanksgiving book yet? simon - Are you all first grade teachers? rhonda - i am simon rhonda - a first grade teacher with a problem naneb - I read it to them on Monday and we discussed the pictures and watched a video from Plymouth plantation, they are doing a webquest tomorrow Marcia/1st/GA - Ooh, Nan what webquest? I wonder if my kids could do it. We have these wireless computers now and I would love to use them. Marcia/1st/GA - Especially since my kids have so much schema for the first thanksgiving. Marcia/1st/GA - Rhonda, what problem do you have? naneb - Marcia it was written by a first grade teacher and the instructions have her voice. I will get you the link rhonda - this is my 4th year 4 blocking and i have two "bored" students rhonda - parents say they aren't challenged naneb - http://www.esc20.k12.tx.us/etprojects/formats/webquests/fall2000/wq102700/judiwq/default.html Marcia/1st/GA - Yeah! Nan. This is soooo great! I can't wait to see it/ rhonda - actually, i have 4 students that can do all 1st grade www naneb - Rhonda, what are they bored with rhonda - oh, i guess everything, from the way the two parents talked to me at conferences rhonda - but, these are the same kids that need to be prodded to write detailed pieces rhonda - prodded to read AR books naneb - did you tell the parents this rhonda - they are reading around 3rd grade level rhonda - i didn't tell parents, as they caught me off guard rhonda - but i am going to call them naneb - I don't teach 1st grade but my son was reading way above everyone else and he still loved first grade rhonda - i've never individualized wwwords before naneb - he still needed a lot of the skills even though he could read rhonda - one of the students supposedly told his mother that we're doingkindergarten work rhonda - should I individulize wwwords Marcia/1st/GA - rhonda, I have a wide range also. I have a student who I am meeting on tomorrow who is basically still a nonreader after 2 years of k. Then I ahve 3 children reading at 2nd and 3rd grade level. However, I read with one of the kids today from an early Little House on the Prairie chapter book and realized it was waaaay to difficult for her with the vocabulary. She could read the words, but doesnt understand some of the vocabulary, if you know what I mean rhonda - marcia............a word caller Marcia/1st/GA - so, even though they can read the words, she really needs to read books at a little easier level for a while. No, she has good comprehension, but this book is too difficult for her to understand even though she can read the words. rhonda - marcia.........yes, she doesn't have the life experience to read that book Marcia/1st/GA - so my point is, first graders need to plateau for a while and read a wide range of books at a lower level. That's why all those series books are so great. rhonda - i'm thinking about doing something with leo lionni books withmy top 4 rhonda - yep, i agree, marcia rhonda - i don't want to get away from the4 block framework, though rhonda - well, i'm going to check out that webquest site for awhile Marcia/1st/GA - okay, me too, Rhonda. It's really great! rhonda - i lost it! can you repost?
