Artie - Hi Wizzle, Its Artie, here!
wizzlewolf - WOW Artie! Hi
wizzlewolf - I almost gave up for a minute
Artie - Are we the first ones???
wizzlewolf - Yes and maybe the only ones!
wizzlewolf - I can't believe this. I sent out so many invitations. Oh well
Artie - How is everything going this year for you?
wizzlewolf - This is an experiment and if it doesn't work, so be it!
wizzlewolf - Hi mpart!
wizzlewolf - Artie, actually my year is going GREAT!
mpart - I am a middle school art teacher and art coordinator for my district. I think this is a great idea.
wizzlewolf - I have a new attitude this year. I am not applying for all kinds of things and taking it easy on professional development.
Artie - Mine is going pretty good...I'm getting excited about my new room!
wizzlewolf - Mpart, GREAT! Spread the word!
wizzlewolf - Hooray!! More people!! Hi artjam!
Artie - Hi mpart!
wizzlewolf - How is your new room doing, do you really like it a lot?
artjam - hi! artjam is a silly name, but I needed something artsy and artie is taken!
wizzlewolf - So what grades does everyone teach and where?
Artie - Hi Artjam, when I first saw your posts, I thought you were Art I am!!! :>
wizzlewolf - I teach severely emotionally disturbed K-12 in St. Pete Florida....You?
artjam - I'm soooooo sorry, but my kids are begging me to play a game with them- this is a good idea, but live chat isn't gonna work for me!
wizzlewolf - Hi that would be a cool name!
mpart - although we're considered "middle" I teach 5,6,7. Located outside Philadelphia
Artie - I teach k - 12, mainstreamed sp. ed, too, IL
mpart - We're a small district and are known to cater to special needs so we have a high percentage of spec. ed students
wizzlewolf - mpart, are you in a urban or suburban setting?
mpart - Suburban, but we border Phila and have a large influx of city kids - something the district is starting to address
mpart - The art department has been instrumental in providing classes for the high school students who need the credits, but have no musical, theater, or computer talent.
wizzlewolf - Has this been a productive year so far? (both)
UDMusic - is this still a chat about art education?
wizzlewolf - Yes!
wizzlewolf - Are you a music and/or art teacher UD?
mpart - Anyone know anything about AP studio art?
UDMusic - Hi, is anyone in here a teacher?
wizzlewolf - AP? I wish! My kids tend to be very low level
Artie - Yes!
wizzlewolf - Artie, you teach AP?
UDMusic - whoa- sorry- i couldnt find the dialog
Artie - I mean yes, ud, we're teachers
mpart - We're trying to address both ends of the spectrum - remedial art classes and ap!
wizzlewolf - UD, I think we are all teachers
UDMusic - ok i'm a music ed major at University of Delaware
UDMusic - I am doing a project on arts students as a subculture w/in schools
wizzlewolf - Yes, that is the way it is going these days. In any one class I can have total nonreaders and those on 8th or 9th grade level. That is a stretch!
UDMusic - my question is this- does anyone have any creative ways to present - i have to give a 4 minute lecture on (part of a 30 min presentation) on curriculum for arts education but i dont just want to stand up there and talk especially since i'm speaking for the arts
wizzlewolf - mpart, are you addressing both in the same classes?
wizzlewolf - Are you a techie UD?
mpart - Yes, in all my classes I address both. In the H.S. classes most are mixed 9-12 grade and varying levels.
wizzlewolf - Mpart, isn't that fun? NOT!
wizzlewolf - How many kids in one class?
mpart - We try to establish pre-requisites for some art classes at the H.S., but the guidance counselors don't abide by it!
mpart - I have 29 in my 7th grade classes - 15% spec. ed
wizzlewolf - mpart, yes that is a common thread among many art teachers
UDMusic - anyone still there?
wizzlewolf - Yes UD. I asked you a question and you didnt' answer.
UDMusic - sorry i am having issues w/ my computer
mpart - My smallest class is 24 with 4 spec.ed students and one mentally impaired.
Artie - My average Jr. High clas is 30
wizzlewolf - mpart, what kind of projects have you been doing this year?
wizzlewolf - Artie, I hope your new room is BIG
mpart - I don't mind the diversity in a class of 24. I have a computer lab that many students enjoy using and it helps some of the students with poor manipulative skills.
UDMusic - got it- techie? as in using multimedia like powerpoint? People are doing that and it's really boring so far. I would like to do something different but not sure what yet
wizzlewolf - Hi GC!
GCArt - hello
UDMusic - does that make sense?
wizzlewolf - UD, NO POWERPOINT! Multimedia!! Make up something like a multimedia sight sound action presentation!
GCArt - I'm K-12..mixes of all types
Artie - UD, do you have access to an aver key (tv) or a white board?
wizzlewolf - GC what state?
GCArt - Iowa
wizzlewolf - Do you know how to make a video?
mpart - wizzlewolf, 5th grade - drawing skills, texture, pattern, printmaking. 6th grade design concepts, 7th grade self-expression, masks, perspective. All do ceramics
UDMusic - well here's what i was thinking- tell me if this is a bad idea- comingup w/ my main points and putting them into a song
wizzlewolf - IOWA?? I don't think I ever spoke to anyone from Iowa!
GCArt - yes, elizabeth, there is an Iowa
UDMusic - yeah but i dont really have time for that unfortunately it's only a 5 wk long class and the way he (prof) scheduled it he didnt give us a lot of time to prepare for the presentation
wizzlewolf - That freaks me out that so many art teachers do specific projects for specific grades. I can't do that because we have mixed classes.
wizzlewolf - Well, I don't know what to tell you then. Multimedia, a skit, video, They are all good ideas.
Artie - when you have mixed grades, you have to be soo creative!
wizzlewolf - Shoot, I have classes that include a 5 year old (who is a developmental two year old) coupled with 9 and 10 year olds. My school is a trip!
UDMusic - ok well thanks anyway- i'm having a real hard time w/ the way this chat is set up on my computer- Thank you everyone for the help
mpart - We do specific projects in our mixed 9-12 classes
wizzlewolf - Yes, I have a pretty tight schedule and plan for my HS class too.
mpart - Wizzlewolf, are you aware of the Washington Lab school in Wash. DC?
GCArt - wizzle are you HS only?
wizzlewolf - No I am not. Why?
Artie - I was talking about specifics per grade level, as the 2nd grades always do a "chalk" drawing of snow, etc...
wizzlewolf - GC, no. I am K-12 SED severely emotionally disturbed
GCArt - I'm really a newby(2nd year) and am having a hard time deciding if it's really okay for me to teach the same lessons to the same levels every year. Doesn't that get redundant? I like to keep things new and fresh for my own sanity.
wizzlewolf - Artie, that is the way most of the art teachers in my district teach. K does this, 1st grade does that, 2nd does whatever, etc. I think that would drive me crazy.
mpart - It is specific to autistic and severely emotionally disturbed students. They incorporate everything with art - good resource..good workshops
wizzlewolf - OH WOW. It is called the "Washington Lab"?
wizzlewolf - You wouldn't happen to know the web address do you?
mpart - I believe so, but I can e-mail you the specifics - have them at school. I've attended a day workshop they did in Philly - excellent.
wizzlewolf - We are getting a bunch of autistic kids lately. They shouldn't go to our school, but there is no place to put them!
GCArt - I have tried something new after the holidays...having all of the elementary students follow a common theme, but doing different age appropriate projects with that theme. We are in "Hawaii"...a nice tropical location that lets us forget about Iowa winters
wizzlewolf - Mpart, I would really appreciate that! wizzlewolf@aol.com
mpart - I don't do the same projects year after year - just the same concepts. Kids usually expect to do what the kids before them did.
wizzlewolf - GC, that is funny. Down here in Florida, all the kids want to draw snowmen!
wizzlewolf - mpart, me too. I take the concepts and think of new things every year. I need to do that for my own sanity!
Artie - Some projects are worth repeating, if they make an impact..the kids look forward to doing them.
GCArt - Since I am the art department in our district (small rural), I can pretty do what I want..with out too much hassle from administration because they really don't seem to know what's going on with art ed these days.
wizzlewolf - Artie, YES! My middle school kids always want to make plaster masks and draw cars!
Artie - Like "when I get in 4th grade", I'll get to do that! :>
wizzlewolf - Hi Russ!
GCArt - I found the idea once while reading about a teacher who developed an entire school theme around Monet's garden. Every grade level had a specific project and when they were all finished, parents, students etc. could visit the "garden" and view all of the beautiful artwork in the show.
GCArt - hi russ
Artie - I saw that, GC, it was neat...
wizzlewolf - GC, I love stuff like that! I have done whole year themes. Egypt, Space, Rain Forest, etc.
GCArt - I have begun to set up the art work for our Hawaiian garden and am getting wonderful comments from other teachers, principal, and visitors...so far so good, and the students have seemed to enjoy it.
mpart - I've tried to tie in S.S. themes, but I work on a quarterly rotation and it's hard to keep up.
GCArt - We've done tiki sculptures, fish, life size dolphin sculptures, shells, diarmas of coral reefs, stained glass fish etc.
wizzlewolf - Mp. I understand. My middle school students change every six weeks
wizzlewolf - I hate that!
wizzlewolf - GC, that sounds fantastic!
GCArt - some of the projects I know to NOT try again, but for the most part, they were successful.
Artie - I did a whole unit last year on Egyptian Art, made an interactive powerpoint, with 'net links, and followup projects..it was great...
GCArt - I was thinking of doing Egypt or China next
mpart - I feel like I never get enough in. 45 consecutive days - 41 min. periods then they are off to another special
wizzlewolf - Artie, I did Egypt one year and by the end of the year, I swore I was never doing Egypt again!! LOL
GCArt - When you are putting things like this together, how are you keeping track of it in a portfolio?
wizzlewolf - mpart, you feel that way because you dont' get enough time!
GCArt - The good thing about Hawaii, is that we've just been working on it since 1/6 and are pretty much ready to travel to somewhere else now.
wizzlewolf - GC, you mean when you do collaborations how can you assess the individual?
GCArt - how long are your classes? I have 45 min with 5&6 and 30 min with lower grades
Artie - I did the Egyptian w/4th-5th last year, and I'm working up a 7 wonders of the world for the 5th this year..
wizzlewolf - All my classes are 50 minutes K-12
mpart - Anyone work in "block scheduling?' Our H.S. teachers do...90 minute classes
Artie - I spent 4 wks. on the unit...for MARCH, the longest month of the school year!
GCArt - no, as part of my teaching portfolio...how do I account for this? As part of the "no child left behind" Iowa is part of a pilot program on teacher evaluations....we're required to have the portfolios put together by 2004 and it's giving many of us stress.
wizzlewolf - This semester we are doing SPACE. We are painting a little room with a space mural.
Artie - No, I teach 30 - 50 min. classes every day.
GCArt - My HS classes are 80 minute blocks
Artie - Wizzle, what "little room"? At school?
GCArt - I see the HS students everyday for 9 wks, junior high only for 45 minutes for 4.5 weeks, and elem classes once a week
wizzlewolf - GC, I don't really understand what you mean (how do you account for this..) I do a Electronic Teaching Portfolio for my own use and evaluation
GCArt - what is that like?...
GCArt - is that where you file your lesson plans?
wizzlewolf - Artie, my "TIME OUT" room. Every classroom in my school has a type of lock down or time out room. I never use mine, so I wanted to paint it.
GCArt - examples of projects? etc?
wizzlewolf - No, I haven't put lesson plans on mine. I will give you the URL
wizzlewolf - www.wizzlewolf.com/ep.html
GCArt - I read about your space...is that the one that you received a grant for? or was that someone else?
wizzlewolf - Yes, I got a teeny weeny grant to buy the paint for the space mural.
wizzlewolf - I have to FINISH IT!! My kids work SLOW
GCArt - did you write a grant proposal?... I need stuff really bad....like a darkroom
Artie - I wanted to put the word out, there is a website for sharing art room pictures...
GCArt - cool
GCArt - how is the new artroom?
wizzlewolf - GC, I am a grant queen. I have gotten about 40,000 dollars (at least) of STUFF in the past ten years from grants and such.
Artie - I would love to see your ideas on art rooms. Please take a picture and send them...
GCArt - I've been following the bulletin posts
GCArt - WOW!!! Can I pick your brain sometime?
wizzlewolf - My artroom looks like a closet. Nothing special!
mpart - I'd like some guidance/tips on writing grants.
Artie - so would I! I just sent one in last week!
wizzlewolf - GC, I am an open book. However, the secret is search search search write write write and apply for EVERYTHING!
GCArt - I need SO much, this department has been in chaos for many years. I am the 5th art teacher in about the last 8 years here
Artie - I have to log out...its been nice chatting w/you guys! :>
GCArt - where do I start searching?
