Grace/IL - Hi everyone
Carol/pre K/WI - sephia what do you need help with
Grace/IL - Barbie, where in Wisconsin are you?
Barbie/K/WI - Beloit area
Carol/pre K/WI - sephia what do you need help with
Barbie/K/WI - how about you?
Grace/IL - Same question for Carol -- I'm 8 miles south of the WI border
Barbie/K/WI - no way
Barbie/K/WI - very close!
Carol/pre K/WI - I know my computer is being difficult
Grace/IL - Yes, Barbie but I'm farther east -- down Rte. 14
Barbie/K/WI - I teach in Delavan
Paulie - Grace I would like to know how you make your naem a link (blue)
Grace/IL - Paulie, when you log on, the third frame asks you what color you want to use.
Paulie - I know I ahve fuschia that does not make my name at the top box fuscia
wizzlewolf - Paulie, if you mean blue as in the blue in the list of names at the top, it is if you put your email address in the box when you log in.
Grace/IL - Barbie, you are close -- 21 miles. Do you teach in that school right along Rte. 11? I'm always intrigued when we pass it.
bette - if i leave fast it is cause my computer does not like this room
Paulie - I tiried that with my email and it did nothing brb
bette - hello milymo ltns
milymo/oh/k - Hi everyone!
wizzlewolf - Log off and log back in with your email address in the box.
Barbie/K/WI - ok, my computer was stuck or something
bette - milymo coming up your way end of oct
bette - barbie that happens to me and i have to log off to unstick it
Paulie - noep I put in my email address and it is still black
milymo/oh/k - Yes bette! It has been a long time! I shouldn't even be here now. I have a masters assignment to finish.
Barbie/K/WI - Grace, you can actually see my school from 43
Paulie - wonder why it doesn't work for me?
anne - Hi all, I need some help, too. am in a new school with no guidlines, etc. I adhere to NAEYC policies and believe children learn best through doing and play. My asst teacher is also a parent does not support me and I have rec'd complaints today about lack of "academics.
wizzlewolf - Paulie, I just logged back in and look up at mine.
milymo/oh/k - If you have time, you should stop by bette!
Paulie - I know
Grace/IL - anne, what grade level?
wizzlewolf - Are you sure you put the actual, correct address with @ and everything?
Paulie - ok trying one more time
Paulie - yes I had it all
bette - anne print off stuff from NAEYC site and give it to your asst.. we are NAEYC accredtied
bette - milymo not sure hubby 35 th class reunion
bette - anne i undertand the lack of academics but children do learn throu play as NAEYC states
bette - anne and if you make the centers learning centers then they are learning right
Paulie - noep it doesn't work for me
Carol/pre K/WI - what are the actually complaints or they the general ABC's 123 ones
wizzlewolf - Oh well.......
bette - jee i gues anne did not want our advice?
Paulie - sigh
anne - sorry yall, i am new to this process
bette - oh your back ..thought you left but logged on no problem
anne - still trying to type and think at same time
nicky - hello
bette - anne to to NAEYC site for help
bette - hello nicky
bette - anne what were the complaints?
Grace/IL - Hi Nicky, what grade level
bette - anne do you have a local NAEYC there?
anne - parents seem to think children should be doing more seatwork, worksheets, writing, etc.
bette - anne but that is not what learning ...do what you think you need to do and back it up with documentation
Paulie - how old anne?
anne - I am not a teacher by training but have done lots of research and have taught for three years
Carol/pre K/WI - Anne seems the topic of the month
bette - anne what age is your group?
bette - anne do you have a CDA?
anne - my kids are 4
wcstudent - does anyone have any good resources to help teach about diversity
bette - anne taught pre-k 4 yr old for 9yrs at a church school
Grace/IL - 4 year olds SHOULDN'T be doing worksheets!!!!!
anne - what is a cda?
bette - westudent try the archives here?
Paulie - 4 year olds need to be doing things that are NOT seatwork
Carol/pre K/WI - westudent what age group
milymo/oh/k - We aren't even doing many worksheets in my kinder class.
Paulie - wc what age?
bette - anne go to NAEYC site ..it is an early childhood certification there is birth -2yr olds and 3-5yr ..certification college , etc
Barbie/K/WI - Carol, are you in an elementary school teaching PreK?
wcstudent - preferably elementary children
bette - Anne are you in a child care setting?
Carol/pre K/WI - anne do you have to do a newsletter you could be the objectives of activities in there
wcstudent - probably like age 7-10
bette - anne how can you teach NAEYC ideas and not know what a CDA is?
Paulie - priamry or intermediate wc?
bette - westudent not off hand but try archives here
wcstudent - primary
Paulie - tell us what is CDA?
anne - no, no child care, church based private pre-school
Carol/pre K/WI - Barbie- no I'm in a non profit Head Start agency
Barbie/K/WI - ok, I thought I had asked you that before
bette - paulie it is a child associate associate .....you do college, notebook and take a test and recertife every 3 yrs with collge hours
bette - paulie never heard of it?
Paulie - oic I never heard of it
jeanne/ece/tx - evening, all!
wcstudent - any help?
Carol/pre K/WI - Barbie that's ok there's alot of us that log on
bette - hello jeanne ltns
bette - westudent sorry i can not think
jeanne/ece/tx - Hi bette!
Paulie - I would say use picture books for showing diversity
bette - anne my advice would be looking into getting a CDA then an AA or BA
Carol/pre K/WI - westudent what is your goal for diversity
bette - jeannie you back in school?
wcstudent - got any good books though?
Paulie - have u tried caling the public library for books for kids about diversity
bette - paulie good idea must be tons of books
Barbie/K/WI - I'm just trying to get ideas to help out our prek teachers by writing down a curriculum; K just aligned ours to the wi standards and now they have to come up with a curriculum
Paulie - Ususally they will take your request and pull books for you
wcstudent - there isn't an exact goal, i just need to find resources to help teach diversity. It is for a class project
schapp - could anyone help me out with a few questions about collaboration?
anne - I have a BA, I use NAEYC priniciples in my teaching but we are not an accredited program. I have three years teaching experienc
Paulie - wc call your library they will do al the work for u
bette - westudent i had to find books like that once for a class..about 2 same sex parents, divorce, death , etc i went to a local bookstore
Paulie - collaboration about what?
jeanne/ece/tx - http://www.cyfc.umn.edu/Ectrain/docs/cda.html will give you information on the Child Development Associate training ... you can just plug those words into a search engine and you'll get many more sites!
bette - anne i am surprised if you are NEAYC principals you never heard of a CDA they are real big with it
schapp - can someone help me for a few minutes please.....
wcstudent - ok, thanks
Barbie/K/WI - well, baby won't stay sleeping so, I'm saying goodbye and goodnight all!
bette - hello rhonda
Paulie - schapp I asked what u needed?
jeanne/ece/tx - wcstudent -- one book I use with my kiddos is WE ARE ALL ALIKE, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT -- it talks about different types of homes, families, racial heritage (skin color) , eye color, etc ... and how people are about the same, as well.
jeanne/ece/tx - schapp -- what about collaboration do you want to know?
schapp - well I am taking a class right now and we are suppose to interview someone
bette - schapp listen to jeanne she is a wealth of knowledge
jeanne/ece/tx - Hi rhonda!
rhonda - interview about what?
schapp - jeanne will you please help me
jeanne/ece/tx - schapp -- do you want to e-mail me the questions?
schapp - well I need 3 questions answered and they are really simple
bette - anne i would say do what you think you need to do as you are the teacher and the one in the charge of that room..find info to back up center learning to give to parents and why seat work is not good for this age
schapp - what is your def, of collaboration? how and when do you use collaboration? what do I need to know about collaboration to prepare myself for teaching
jeanne/ece/tx - okay, schapp -- go for it!
Paulie - write the questions out
bette - jeanne you back taking classes?
bette - milymo are you fimilar with Ohio unversity?
rhonda - collaboration with students? teachers?
anne - thanks bette (that was my mother's name and spelling too). All the research I have done supports what you are saying.
milymo/oh/k - Yes, in Dayton?
schapp - teachers I would guess
bette - anne yes it does ..i have a younger group..moms are teens and we do alot of center play and they learn alot from the beggining of the yr to the end by playing and learning
Paulie - collaboration is working together with another person for a final product/answer/solution
bette - milymo i think in athens well they have online classes daughter and i am taking ..i am hoping
schapp - milymo do you live in dayton?
Paulie - teachers collaborate and so can students for projects
bette - okay i need to go as i have two daughters needing to finish homework....
Carol/pre K/WI - scapp because you will or could be c ollaborating with parents on a daily bases
bette - bye
rhonda - bye bette
milymo/oh/k - No, I'm around the Akron area.
anne - thanks again, bette
schapp - oh just checking
milymo/oh/k - Oh! Bette left so quickly!
Paulie - to use collaboration, you need to know how to work together, accept the ideas of others, contribute yours and be able to show children in class how to collaborate too using steps
jeanne/ece/tx - schapp -- got it! I'll send them to you in just a sec.
schapp - thank you so much
Carol/pre K/WI - scapp hope all the input is helping
Paulie - (I left out the parents sorry they are most important too)
schapp - it is, you all are great
schapp - it is, you all are great
milymo/oh/k - I wanted to stop in and say hi, but I better get back to work on my master's stuff.
rhonda - master certification?
Paulie - student collaboration is not copying someone's paper to turn in It is working together for a final solution the working together part is more important than the final answer as it shows that they can help each other
Paulie - bye milymo
schapp - you all are helping a lot, but can you tie it into working with children who have disablilities
Carol/pre K/WI - nilymo thanks for the time; masters in what I'm working on mine too.
milymo/oh/k - Master's degree - thought I'd take this big leap before having another kiddo!
jeanne/ece/tx - schapp -- I"m about to e-mail my responses to you ... hang on!
rhonda - what types of disabilities
schapp - ok thank you jeanne
Paulie - well a seeing child can write for a blind child
milymo/oh/k - Just a general Masters of Education. What about you Carol?
Paulie - you can make changes in things to suit those with whatever their disability
schapp - any kind of disability
rhonda - and some are auditory learners..others visual
Paulie - because you are blind doesn't mean your mind is gone
Carol/pre K/WI - scapp the same applies only you may be collaborating with more people and you may be the person helping the parent to figure out who is doing what depending on level of services to support the disability
Paulie - kidna liek they have pinch hitters in baseball
rhonda - absolutely, Paulie.........
jeanne/ece/tx - Milymo ... how much longer until you finish? I finished up last May (what a relief!)
milymo/oh/k - Goodnight everyone! If I finish, I might stop back in at 11:00.
rhonda - build on the strengths of each child in class...they feel valued
Carol/pre K/WI - Milymo/oh/k masters in profession al development ECE focus
schapp - you all are awesome
milymo/oh/k - Jeanne - I'll finish next fall.
Paulie - everyone does what they can -- same with people and disabilities and a group that doesn't have physical disabilities
Paulie - I will be here mily see u later
rhonda - they sure need to learn that at a young age, so they can get along in life
milymo/oh/k - Hopefully I'll be back Paulie! If so, see you later!
Paulie - ok
Paulie - That is why multiple intelligences is so good to use in school
Paulie - hmmmmm my writing is not appearing
Paulie - o there it is . . .
schapp - does anyone in here work specifically with children who have dispabilities?
rhonda - i'm not so good at that, but I'm trying
rhonda - not me schapp
Paulie - am not sped no inclusion ever in any classroom
rhonda - hi wendy
Carol/pre K/WI - scapp I have children with disabilities in my classroom
Wendy - Hi all.
jeanne/ece/tx - Okay, shcapp -- it is on the way ... and yes, I teach in a Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities.
schapp - yeah I think if I get one more paper with mulitple intelligences on it,I'm going to go insane
schapp - thanks so much jeanne
anne - I have two children in my class of pre-k4, one has already been diagnosed medically as ADHD and one has not but has the identical tendencies.
jeanne/ece/tx - Hi Wendy -- how are you doing this evening?
jeanne/ece/tx - glad to help, schapp!
rhonda - i think I have one ADHD....undiagnosed and one CAPD
Wendy - real good, for once I'm ahead with my planning
Paulie - o I did not think of adhd as disability
Wendy - Ooooh...I'm new to this, the smiley's cute!
schapp - you all have been great, I will be back if I get my paper done in a reasonable amount of time
jeanne/ece/tx - rhonda -- what do you do with the kiddos with CAPD? I have two or three (undiagnosed ... but it sure seems like that is the crux of their problems!)
Paulie - alte chat here tonight also
Carol/pre K/WI - Wendy how lucky you are I don't ever feel a head i n planning
jeanne/ece/tx - schapp -- good luck! you've got contact info if you need to ask me any more questions!
Paulie - what is CAPD?
jeanne/ece/tx - Central Auditory Processing Disorder ...
rhonda - central auditory processing
anne - my last class i had a child with Ausbergers Syndrome. and maybe you are right and ADHD is not a disablity but the children will have to learn alternative learning and focusing techniques as they mature.
Wendy - Yep, Carol...for once I am!!
Paulie - and what does that entail?
jeanne/ece/tx - the kiddos can HEAR your words, repeat them back to you, but don't seem to have ANY comprehension of the meaning!
Paulie - No, I jsut meant I said I had no disability children but have had lots with adhd and add
rhonda - they can hear, but there are other issues with CAPD
Paulie - o
Wendy - Usually kids with the ADHD have other things underlying , anyway, that's what I'm finding
rhonda - difficulty following multiple step directions for one
Paulie - gee soemtimes I ahve trouble with that!
rhonda - i think organization is a problem for ADHD kids
jeanne/ece/tx - Aspergers syndrome is quite the interesting challenge ... never quite know what the kiddos are thinking and how they are going to respond!
jeanne/ece/tx - rhonda -- do you use a lot of picture scheduling?
anne - I know about half of ADHD have Oppositional Confrontational disorder
rhonda - is aspergers kind of like a mild autism?
Paulie - soudns liek this is sped chat
anne - yes, aspergers is a functioning autism
rhonda - not familiar with picture scheduling ..please explain
jeanne/ece/tx - rhonda -- aspergers falls "under the umbrella" of PDD (Pervasive Developmental Delay) -- which autism is also under. Some educators and psychologists actually consider ADHD to exist UNDER that "umbrella", too!
rhonda - i'm seeing more special ed issues in my reg. ed classroom
jeanne/ece/tx - Rhonda ... what age group do you work with?
rhonda - didn't know tha jeanne
rhonda - i teach first gr.
Wendy - really tricky dealing with this isn't it...one thing to recognize it on paper, knowing what to call it...then there's the actual teaching a whole class and reaching those special kids. What a challenge.
jeanne/ece/tx - Picture schedules are black-line drawings (and words!) symbolizing each activity for the day (or hour) ...
rhonda - where do you put these picture schedules
jeanne/ece/tx - Use of the picture schedule helps the children understand the routine of the day ... so we post "table games" -- "opening circle" -- "snack" -- "music/movement" -- "small group" -- "free play" -- "clean up" -- "story" -- "closing circle" -- "bus" ... to let the kiddos know what's next.
rhonda - that's a great idea
jeanne/ece/tx - I put the pictures on the chalk board (use magnets) and slide them under a "finished" symbol when we've completed each activity.
Paulie - sounds just liek a schedule in a beginning K classroom and same fro upper grades but with writing
jeanne/ece/tx - It is helpful for children with autism ... children with limited language skills ... children with autism .....
anne - thanks everyone for the help earlier. I am in ET and have to go to sleep. 6 AM is just around the corner.
jeanne/ece/tx - I encourage some of the K and grade 1 teachers to make a strip for some kiddo's desks with three or four velcro dots .... if the directions are "color" -- "cut" -- "glue" ... then velcro pics of a crayon, a pair of scissors, a glue bottle on the strip -- as the child completes each step the direction is moved to a "finished box" or bag
rhonda - where are you coming up with these great ideas, jeanne
Paulie - great idea jeanne
rhonda - we are being encouraged to get professional dev. hours in spec. ed
rhonda - i'm in illinois
jeanne/ece/tx - rhonda -- our music therapist has a small board (about the size of a clipboard) that she schedules our songs for her session each week ... pulls them off and moves on to the next song ...
rhonda - as a matter of fact, a certain % of our recertification hours have to be in spec. ed
rhonda - probably because there's a shortage of spec. ed. teachers
jeanne/ece/tx - rhonda, I work in a special education preschool classroom, many of my kiddos are supposed to have their own picture schedules!
rhonda - paulie what do you teach?
jeanne/ece/tx - Most of my kiddos are so successful with the group schedule that we just use the group picture schedule.
Wendy - I have a girl in my class....absolutely my best reader, smart.... never on task...just asked the parent if hearing's been tested....she's in another space most of the day. how would you deal with that?
rhonda - age of child wendy
Paulie - moved, , , no job this yr I love to teach K jsut trying to keep up with what's happening
jeanne/ece/tx - the source of most of my pictures is boardmaker ... by mayer-johnson. It is a computer program, unfortunately, it is VERY expensive!
Wendy - she's 6, I teach 1st
jeanne/ece/tx - www.dotolearn.com has many symbols you could explore to try a schedule if your district doesn't have boardmaker available to you.
rhonda - o,good idea, paulie
rhonda - thankx for that jeanne
rhonda - i have one like that too, wendy
jeanne/ece/tx - Wendy -- she "reads" well -- is it decoding or does she comprehend?
rhonda - he is socially immature, but boy,can he read
rhonda - acts pretty clueless most of the time
rhonda - how well wendy...........chapter books?
Paulie - looks like an interesting site
jeanne/ece/tx - Wendy -- how about putting a "work" symbol on her desk ... when she is off-task just walk by and tap the picture.
Wendy - Super articulate, I mean, I've already had her read in front of the class to challenge her... Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters...with feeling and all. She's a fabulous artist...but man...she talks to herself...I call her to task more than everyone! (I love her!)
Wendy - Ooooh Jeanne...I like that. Love that picture idea.
Paulie - so what if she talks to herself
rhonda - my little guy reads with expression too.
Paulie - you don't always learn in silence
Paulie - maybe you could move her desk so she can continue and yet not disturb others
Wendy - It's OK if she talks to herself...just not while I'm talking!
jeanne/ece/tx - Wendy -- do you have a gifted & talented teacher on your campus? Is she bored?
rhonda - but, I can ask him to follow a couple of directions, and oh my gosh......i'm invisibe, no response
Paulie - o
jeanne/ece/tx - You can also have symbols on your chalk board ... an ear for listening, a pencil for writing, crayon for coloring ... child at desk for "work", children talking for "free-time"
Wendy - It's so sad but we don't jeanne...I'm in a private Christian school, that is one of those things I wish we had.
jeanne/ece/tx - (Those can be on the board ... for everyone!)
Paulie - maybe you can give her soemthing to talk to herself to while you are talking
rhonda - differentiated instruction.......im hearing a lot about that too
Paulie - I mean like have some small thing she could "talk" to while still istening
rhonda - what about a working buddy for her wendy
Wendy - Yep, I see Paulie.
Paulie - How often do you go to workshops where teachers are talking among themselves yet hear the speaker
Paulie - I think fi you did not tell ehr she had to stop completely but shisper it to this symbol she held she could pay attention
Janel - Hi!
Paulie - sorry for typos I type too fast and send before I check
Janel - I have a few questions
rhonda - shoot janel
Paulie - Try that Wendy and then coem back and tell us how it is working
Paulie - no don't shoot
Janel - what do i do about a student who continually wets her pants?
Paulie - (don't like violence)
Wendy - All good ideas, thanks!
Paulie - how old janel?
jeanne/ece/tx - Janel -- how old is the child?
Janel - she's four
Janel - actually her birthday is 4/15
Paulie - did parents say she is trained?
jeanne/ece/tx - HOw long has she been trained? How often do you send her to the restroom?
rhonda - no, i mean go ahead janel : )
Janel - we go as a class about six times a day
Carol/pre K/WI - several time during the day
Janel - i've not directly asked the parents about her yet
Janel - however, they've been getting wet clothes home for six days straight
Paulie - well sicne she has to change udnerwear don't the parents already know about the problem?
Paulie - well after a week of that I sould call
Carol/pre K/WI - did she just start in your program
Janel - what do i say though?
Janel - yes... I can only have fours
rhonda - i've got to go..........teenager needs computer. bye, all
Janel - bye rhonda
Paulie - bye rhonda
rhonda - goodluck janel
Janel - thanks
Paulie - I am surprised they don't say soemthing to you -- do you furnish the dry panties?
jeanne/ece/tx - 'nite rhonda
Janel - well, my associates have changed her each time... I imagine that we have some... otherwise, she must not have any
Janel - they've not returned many of the clothes we've sent home...
Carol/pre K/WI - I would ask about any changes they may have noticed at home
Janel - today though, i asked her if it burned when she went to the rr... she said it burned in her nose
Paulie - so then your call should be about returning the clothes
jeanne/ece/tx - Janel -- send the parents a note each day letting them know how many outfits need to be returned ... ask if she's had problems at home ... if she's scared of anything in the rr .....
jeanne/ece/tx - refer her to the school nurse ...
Paulie - some preschools the kids ahve to be potty trained
Wendy - Oooops...not sure what happened, but I'm going to go. Good night everyone, nice talking!
Janel - i talked to the nurse... she thought maybe a bladder infection... she's calling mom tomorrow
Paulie - bye wendy come back
jeanne/ece/tx - 'nite Wendy -- take care!
Wendy - Thanks for the tips!
Janel - night wendy!
Paulie - well that is probably it IF she has been in school longer than this week of accidents
Janel - well, she did not have trouble at first... but as we've progressed, she's continued to develop problems. Maybe mom wipes her @ home?
jeanne/ece/tx - It is just a good place to start ... bladder infection ... possibly (if she is toileting frequently anyhow) mmight need to consider possiblity of juvenile diabetes.
Paulie - well Mom needs to teach ehr what to do herself
Carol/pre K/WI - need to find my way home, good nite all.
Paulie - bye Carol
jeanne/ece/tx - 'nite Carol ... take care!
Janel - night carol
Janel - i'm concerned mostly because she overall functions at the level of a two year old.
Janel - motor skills, speech, etc. this just adds to my concerns
Paulie - think a conference with parents is due
jeanne/ece/tx - janel -- she is 4? refer her to sped testing department ... somewhere in your district there are services for her!
Janel - i'll talk with aea... thanks so much!!
jeanne/ece/tx - (those are the kiddos I work with every day!)
Janel - i don't want to lose her to the ecse program, but I'm not sure i'm ready for her in my first year... especially with the breadth of the issues i've seen thus far
Paulie - gosh I thought all chidlren entering early childhood programs ahd to have a dr checkup
jeanne/ece/tx - Janel -- the ideal would be to get her assessed, to meet as many of her needs as possible in YOUR setting ... and to send her to the ecse teacher only when absolutely necessary. O.T., P.T., Speech, and (possibly) Music Therapy services are probably available to her!
Paulie - u would think medical problems would be discovered then
jeanne/ece/tx - Paulie -- many doctor's dont have a clue! I have a kiddo (now 3.6 years old) whose pedi doc tells parents he's just "slightly delayed" ... he functions at about a 6 MONTH LEVEL!!!!!
Janel - she did... she's already under observation by the aea for speech... I just hoped that I was imagining the problems
Paulie - how sad
jeanne/ece/tx - Janel, do you document observations on all your kiddos regularly? Do you keep a portfolio of work (cutting, coloring, "writing", etc?
Janel - i'm bad about that... what should i keep for documentation
Paulie - something she does every week and date it
Paulie - even if it is a copy of the original you want to send home
Paulie - it will shwo growth
jeanne/ece/tx - I try to keep a page of coloring about once every three or four weeks, a writing sample (or "draw this" -- child models what you draw) ... a sample of cutting skill (straight lines, curved, snips ... whatever the level is!) DATE everything you save! Note if it is independent, hand-over-hand, if pencil or scissor grasp needs to be directed, etc.)
Janel - well... thank you so very much for your words... you know how it is when you know what you SHOULD do, but you need some reassurance
jeanne/ece/tx - Paulie -- I do keep copies sometimes ... I like to send home the originals a lot.
jeanne/ece/tx - If you're doing a "daily journal" then a lot of the samples are already right there in your room, anyhow!
Paulie - parents liek the originals too
Janel - i've got to get to bed... we're starting to paint tomorrow... so I've got to get up early. Thank you so much for the advice!! You've helped me feel like I might just have a clue as to what I'm doing
Paulie - and when kids take stuff home they did parents can talk about it with them good for oral lang development also
jeanne/ece/tx - I have to monitor kiddos' progress on individualized plans. In the past I've kept a worksheet I made on my computer ... had square, circle, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond at top, eleven circles for color recognition (basic crayola 8 plus white, pink, gray), lines to note speech samples, pics the child CAN identify, specific indiv. learning needs, and a writing sample (name) at the bottom of the page ... sure makes it easy to say he DOES or DOESNOT know _____!
Paulie - bye Janel
jeanne/ece/tx - Janel -- think positive ... and come often ... we'll always share what we can! Have fun tomorrow!
Janel - Thanks! night
Paulie - wonder if she is painting at her work or home?
jeanne/ece/tx - I'm guessing at work tomorrow!
Paulie - painting pictures or building?
jeanne/ece/tx - I'm thinking she's just opening the painting center with her preschoolers.
Paulie - o . . .okwas trying to figure out why someone would be painting a house/cclass on middle of week
jeanne/ece/tx - It can be daunting when you've never done it before in your own classroom! especially if you're struggling with children in the classroom!
Paulie - yup
jeanne/ece/tx - (Heck! It is scary in my classroom ... and I have THREE great assistants!)
Paulie - lol
jeanne/ece/tx - Paulie, I don't recall ... what age group do you work with ... and where? I have a special needs preschool classroom near Dallas.
Paulie - nice to have so much help
Paulie - not working presetly (think I said this earlier) I moved and have not found a job yet I want to teach K again
Paulie - I am in WA state now
jeanne/ece/tx - Great work setting ... but sad to need so much help that the district actually PAYS those three!!! (most in my position only have two assistants!)
Paulie - I jsut keep coming here to keep up with the latest from everybody
jeanne/ece/tx - that's right ... you're between classrooms now. are you looking? Good luck!
Paulie - thanks
Paulie - always looking might do a daycare job in the interim
Paulie - I miss teaching
Paulie - How long have u had that position?
jeanne/ece/tx - Why not go and volunteer/sub in the building you WANT to be in next year? Build yourself a great rep ... show off your skills ... make yourself priceless and an absolute necessity on that campus!!!!!
Paulie - can't do that here very political
Paulie - I subbed 8 years
jeanne/ece/tx - I've been in my special needs classroom for five full year -- this is year six ... have been early childhood certified since 1985.
jeanne/ece/tx - sad ...
Paulie - I did a lot of volunteering also
Paulie - but I ahd to move to CA to get a full time job I taught 6 yrs there
Paulie - and decided to move back and take my chances
Paulie - I gradeated in 85
Paulie - I have wonderful references from subbing here
Paulie - (I really can spell just can't type)
jeanne/ece/tx - I tried for SEVEN years in Michigan to get a job in education ... subbed almost every day of every year ..... NEVER got ONE interview! Came to TX on vacation a week before school started and was hired at my second interview! Had to fly home at Labor Day weekend and bring my car and "earthly belongings" back with me! LOL
Paulie - I envy the teachers who have spent 25-30 years in the same school teachign the same gr
jeanne/ece/tx - Are you bachelors' or masters' level teacher?
jeanne/ece/tx - I'll be right back ... gotta go refill my iced tea.
Paulie - haven't made enought eachign to go back for masters
Paulie - I don't want to teach in a test driven state
Paulie - ok
Paulie - I liek using BB for K and liek to have a developmentally correct K in all day setting
jeanne/ece/tx - I went back for masters' because I was spending SO MUCH TIME researching what was going on with my kiddos I figured I might as well get some kind of credit for it!
Paulie - great idea my minor is Library science and I would like to get masters in that
jeanne/ece/tx - I guess we're using some kind of "modified" KID WRITING with my little ones this year. I do a "write-to" almost daily, they draw and try to write in thier journals pretty much daily.
jeanne/ece/tx - that would be cool!
Paulie - yes I liek that also but havn't actually used the whole program
jeanne/ece/tx - I just enjoyed the collegiate atmosphere ... miss it now -- hope to return to work on my Ed.D. starting in the fall of 2003.
Paulie - but I love to encourage kids to write 2nd gr is my next favorite cause that is where they know some writing skills and you can have a positive influence on them to write
Paulie - I liek going to school too but it takes money
jeanne/ece/tx - I've not ever read KID WRITING, just think that is the model I"m using (based on what I've read about here!) I think my approach is pretty much eclectic -- I pull a bit from here and there ... put it all together and make it work for my kiddos!
Paulie - understand . . . me too
jeanne/ece/tx - University of North Texas had grant monies that paid for about 70% of my masters ... it cost me about $200/semester plus books and the wear and tear on my car!
Paulie - I found it ahrd to believe that CA had K standards when it is not even mandatory to go to K in CA
Paulie - great glad u got in on that
jeanne/ece/tx - Texas has same! Kindergarten TEKS ... but kiddos don't have to be in school until they are SEVEN!!!
Paulie - so ridiculous
Paulie - I mean I ahve had a couple K kids reading at 4th gr level (not comprehension -- mostly text)
Paulie - and then some who I could hardly get to recognize the alphabet
jeanne/ece/tx - Of course, as I understand it, the TEKS generally cover several grade levels, so the kiddos are initally exposed in K, mastery is expected at grade 2 or 3! Pre-K has "guidelines" ... and only ESL or low-income kiddos are invited or served in that program (but NO transportation!)
Paulie - sad what do you think about the "no child left behind"
jeanne/ece/tx - I believe that many of the kiddos in my sped preschool classroom actually are functioning ahead of many of the K kiddos on my campus! They want to know, so I teach them.
Paulie - that is it if they are ready u teach them that is why Building Blocks LA program is so good
Paulie - different kids get different things from the same thing taught
jeanne/ece/tx - I think that all that will happen is that our kids will continue to get farther and farther behind. Sadly, what the initiative does is take AWAY the time kiddos who struggle need to master the skills ... they need time to "roll around in the letters and the phonics" ... to play with it, to embrace it, to make it theirs ... THEN they will move on to mastery of reading! (Same with numbers!)
Paulie - How long did it take to do your masters while you taught?
jeanne/ece/tx - We push and push and push ... and the kids JUST DON'T GET IT!!!
jeanne/ece/tx - three school years and one summer.
Paulie - right many thigns not developmentally correct have u ever ehard Jim grant speak?
jeanne/ece/tx - 2 classes per semester (long) , three classes one summer
jeanne/ece/tx - no, haven't heard of him.
Paulie - that is a lot to do and teah too
Paulie - He is a big proponent of developmental K
Paulie - I meant . . .and teach too
jeanne/ece/tx - I"m a BIG proponent of "UNGRADED PRIMARY SCHOOLS" ... meaning that there are blocks of skills to pass prior to moving to the next section ... in theory a child can be in grade 1 math and grade 6 language arts training! Students' strengths are capitalized on, their weaknesses are strengthened and trained to help them be successful in those areas, too!
jeanne/ece/tx - It was a lot of work, but OH SO worth it! I had fun, enjoyed the time at university, REALLY want to go back!
Paulie - Yes I subbed at a school that did that In the "first gr class" I ahd kids from 6-8 years old
Paulie - I understand about the classes -- I had so many when I graduated my advisor said go out in the world and make some money
Paulie - I wanted to do a 5th eyar but all the classes I took I ahd over 60 extra credits
Paulie - I figured if I coudl take 21 classes a semester instead of the minimum 14 I was gettting my money's worth
Paulie - not 21 classes 21 credits
jeanne/ece/tx - In the ideal setting there wouldn't be a "grade one" ..... all the kiddos go to that school until they "got it all" ... then they move on to the next school. Seems to me that IF we build a program in which the children are given the safety and the time they need to MASTER the basic skills ALL CHILDREN Will learn to read, write, communicate, calculate, and succeed in life!
Paulie - yes I agree with that but this is the next best thing the way they were doing it
jeanne/ece/tx - Well, for all the classes I took (while w*orking) ... my masters' gpa was a 3.94 -- made 1 "B" (and I was glad for a B in that class! it was TOUGH!!!)
Paulie - I think it can only happen if the government gets out of education
Paulie - congrats
jeanne/ece/tx - I'm sure! I guess I may need to look at writing a grant and making "ungraded primary" my Ed.D. thesis ...
Paulie - neato
jeanne/ece/tx - have to do it in several different population settings to get any kind of validity ...
Paulie - well the model they ahd here had a lot of Russian immigrants
jeanne/ece/tx - the school i teach in now is "exemplary" ... top notch in all academic areas ... would like to work with "low performing" and "average" campuses, as well.
Paulie - I subbed for that class many times
jeanne/ece/tx - I bet it was a fun place to sub!
Paulie - yes it was
Paulie - if you can call subbing fun
jeanne/ece/tx - Before I got my full-time teaching position I always said that if the district would pay me a full-time salary I'd sub every day! I learned SO much as a "guest teacher" ... and the variety was fun for me! ... but I know it isn't everyone's "cup of tea"!
Paulie - well u also learn what not to do in yoru own classroom
jeanne/ece/tx - yes, I've learned a LOT in my room!
Paulie - I also liek to do Bulletin baords and creative stuff
jeanne/ece/tx - I put my boards up before school st arts (thematic for the year) ... mostly blank space, though ... the kids' art work is what we showcase in my room. I enjoy creative stuff, but try to make things more "artsy" than "craftsy" ... I used to do the BB thing, with my kiddos it was pretty much wasted time. BUT -- I do appreciate creative bulletin boards!
Paulie - I liek to use the kids stuff too
jeanne/ece/tx - Interesting concept when I was in undergrad study was interactive bulletin boards! I've always hoped to do those, but boards are so hard for little bits to reach!
Paulie - I was taught to do interactive ones also but it is hard
Paulie - so I try to do that kind of stuff in venters
jeanne/ece/tx - Our K teachers (whose assistants cut out the "parts" to most of their projects) often comment on our children's work -- we really celebrate it in my room!
Paulie - the K kids need to do their own cutting they are not bakers (cookie cutter projects) but individuals with different skills
jeanne/ece/tx - Several years ago I was on a campus with another teacher working with the same types of disabilities -- and ages -- as I work with ... when we put out our projects you could see who was developmental and who was project oriented ... my kids' pumpkins were blue-purple-green-red-orange-yellow ... hers were orange with yellow faces ... mine were all different sizes and shapes, her assistants had cut theirs out
jeanne/ece/tx - We looked at them and laughed! We approached things from TOTALLY different points of view, but our kids got to the same place at the end of the year!
Paulie - sad huh?
jeanne/ece/tx - I thought so, but ...
jeanne/ece/tx - My kiddos are learning to trace their own shapes for projects (where appropriate) --one K teacher said "What a good idea! I wonder if my kids could do that." ???
Just Me/Mi - Hi ladies, can I join in?
Paulie - hi Just me glad u made it tonight
jeanne/ece/tx - Hi Just Me! How are you doing? COME ON IN, the water's fine!
Paulie - tracing is good too
Paulie - of course JustMe
Paulie - How are you doing Just Me?
jeanne/ece/tx - Just Me -- St. Clair area? right?
Just Me/Mi - What's the topic?
jeanne/ece/tx - we've been throwing around DAP ... what do you want to talk about?
Paulie - developmetally correct classes I guess
Paulie - vs cookie cutter projects
Just Me/Mi - Jeanne - How'd you know?
jeanne/ece/tx - Paulie -- we were on the same page! YEAH!!!!!
jeanne/ece/tx - we've met before ... I grew up in port huron.
Paulie - I am still waiting for the rest of your room photos Just Me
jeanne/ece/tx - Hi kidcare! how are you this evening?
Just Me/Mi - I remember now. You have a new name
Just Me/Mi - Hi kidcare
jeanne/ece/tx - Just Me -- I must have "checked my brain at the door" ... I normally check in as "meeha/ece/tx"!
Paulie - o wow u r meeha lol
jeanne/ece/tx - yep, I"m meeha! I'm sorry (I just realized i used the wrong name!!!!!) LOL
Just Me/Mi - Room photos will be sent ASAP - Been busy with Br-in-law in ICU
Paulie - (I know)
jeanne/ece/tx - Just ME -- I"m sorry ... what's up? how's he doing?
Just Me/Mi - meeha -glad to "seeya"
Paulie - Just glad to see u here tonight Justme
jeanne/ece/tx - ty, ty, ty!
Paulie - BTW what does meeha stand for?
Just Me/Mi - Cancer surgery - He's talking when he's awake - lots of meds for pain - tubes and wires everywhere on him
jeanne/ece/tx - kidcare, where do you live (about) ... and work? I'm in the Dallas area, work with special needs preschoolers.
Paulie - t do u teach I mean what age?
jeanne/ece/tx - bless his heart!
Paulie - I meant kidcare who do u teach?
jeanne/ece/tx - Paulie -- my first year in PPCD one of my kiddos couldn't say "Miss Hart", it came out sounding like "meeha", so I kept that name here at t.net -- it felt right!
Just Me/Mi - how cute meeha!
Paulie - o how cute
jeanne/ece/tx - I still "like it" ... he was a special kiddo ... I still see his face when I use his name for me!
Paulie - wonderful memory
jeanne/ece/tx - funny bathroom story ... my first year teaching ...
Paulie - Justme wrote a whole story about her bathroom adventure in school
jeanne/ece/tx - kids are at naptime, the top joint on the toilet in the boy's bathroom blew off the back of the toilet -- water spraying ALL AROUND a little (maybe 4x6) bathroom!
jeanne/ece/tx - flooded out four rooms in less than ten minutes! Custodian came in to see what was happening, wouldn't go in to turn off water at wall until he "got his boots on"!
Just Me/Mi - "My terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day"
Paulie - so all the kdis sleeping stuff got wet?
jeanne/ece/tx - mind you ... the water was hitting the ceiling and bouncing around this little room -- when he FINALLY did turn it off and come out he looked like he'd just stepped out of a swimming pool!
Paulie - yes that is one you should publish Just Me
Paulie - so meeha what did the kdis do?
jeanne/ece/tx - no, I managed to get them ... and the mats up ... they got to go down the hall to the ESL classroom for the balance of the day ... I got to sweep water from my room, pick up the carpet to let it dry ................ it was quite an adventure!
Just Me/Mi - lol jeanne!! What a gem! I can see it now!
Paulie - who says teaching isn't exciting?
jeanne/ece/tx - I was amazed at HOW LITTLE help/support the administration or district offered!
jeanne/ece/tx - next day we made a book about our wet experience! kids pics were GREAT! One -- he wasn't even there! -- drew a tiny black box at the bottom of the page and a rainbow blowing out to all sides of the paper (9"wide, 12"tall!)
Paulie - did you two get the great Phonemic awareness download someone was offering on the chatboard?
Paulie - It is really neat
Paulie - I finally printed it all today
jeanne/ece/tx - I've not been at the chatboard in a few days ... I'll check it out when I leave (thanks for the heads-up!)
Paulie - sent it to 5 other people
Paulie - nope they aren't sending it anymore
Paulie - if u want it I can forward it as an attachment
Paulie - but I never send attachments unless a person knows it
jeanne/ece/tx - can you send it to me, Paulie? that would be great! thanks!
Just Me/Mi - Send it to me too, please I haven't kept up with the chatboard lately either
jeanne/ece/tx - I appreciate that ... often I "throw attachments away" without even looking at them.
jeanne/ece/tx - thanks! I will take a good look at it and use what I can!
Just Me/Mi - It sounds great - Thanks Paulie!
Paulie - I jsut counted it it is 27 pages including title page but a few of those are for activities
jeanne/ece/tx - Well, it has been nice visiting with you folks this evening ... I think I'm going to scoot on off to bed soon. Take care -- hope to see you again soon.
Paulie - bye meeha
Paulie - goodnight
