Barbie/K/WI - ok
Lydia - i do not do letter of the week
Paulie - good news Wilma!
Wilma - Thanks.
Paulie - give us an example of what a sign looks like
Barbie/K/WI - my school is in a town with a Deaf school

Paulie - I don't see how yu can do Tucker method and building blocks together
Wilma - Does anyone teach special education?
Lydia - why not paulie it works are you familiar with tucker
Paulie - sounds liek zoo phonics an animal shape for each letter /sound
Paulie - I am sure there are lots of sped teachers lol
Barbie/K/WI - not me Wilma
Lydia - i have inclusion students in my classroom but i don't teach special ed
Paulie - never heard of Tucker
Paulie - because Building Blocks has its own way of intoducing letters
Lydia - it is hard to explain just wish i could show you
Paulie - hi Jenn
Wilma - Sorry I mean anyone talking here teach special education?
Jenn - Hi Room...I need help
Lydia - i do not isolate the letters
Paulie - (sorry Wilma trying to make a joke)
Jenn - Does anyone here teach gym/health?
Paulie - hi jenn we all need help what do u need?
Lydia - what's the problem jenn
Barbie/K/WI - no, we have gym as a special
Lydia - i teach k
Paulie - does Tucker have a site online?
Jenn - I teach in a Catholic School...somedays I teach gym, library, computer, mostly preschool
Barbie/K/WI - Lydia can we find Tucker on the web?
Wilma - That is okay. It didn't come out like I meant it to anyways.
Jenn - Gym is the worst because I have 1st-8th grade
Barbie/K/WI - oh no
Jenn - The seventh and eighth graders are soooo hard for me to teach
Barbie/K/WI - not together Jenn?
Lydia - i am not sure but the creator's name is bethany tucker you could try a search
Jenn - I'm not secondary at all, and I just can't even relate to them
Lydia - she is affilated with ruby payne poverty trainer
Barbie/K/WI - brb, laundry is done...
Paulie - 8th grade is not secondary
Jenn - no not all together, gym wed afternoons, library mon afternoons, computer fri afternoons
Jenn - they're much more secondary than my preschoolers
Paulie - my elem ed degree is K-8
Jenn - where is that? Mine is k-6
Paulie - but my library sc degree is K-12 so that is where the secondary coems in
Paulie - WA
Paulie - graduated in Idaho tho
Jenn - anyway, I need help! I have no idea what to do with the 7th/8th grade group
Paulie - thanks for the info Lydia will search later

Paulie - tug of war
Paulie - bye Wilma
Paulie - ask THEM what they would like to learn
Paulie - ybe they just want to learn skills for basketball
Paulie - maybe
Jenn - I did that, and at first it worked, but now they are all picking at each other
Lydia - good night need to go
Paulie - bye Lydia
Jenn - bye Lydia
Barbie/K/WI - good night Lydia
Paulie - establish rules/procedures
Paulie - go to library ask librarian at public library for ideas
Jenn - Thanks Paulie...you have lots of good ideas
Paulie - welcoem am trying
Paulie - part of every tiem period for PE shoudl be warm up exercises tho
Barbie/K/WI - ok, I need an idea for making a classroom book about fire trucks or fire safety
Barbie/K/WI - PE was my WORST subject!
Paulie - why a truck?
Jenn - Thanks for all the good ideas, I need to go plan
Jenn - Goodnight
Paulie - can you make the shape of a hydrant?
Paulie - bye jenn
Barbie/K/WI - bye Jenn
Barbie/K/WI - yes
Paulie - and have a yarn hose for the kids to use to follow simple words on each page related to fire safety/trucks
Barbie/K/WI - cute
Paulie - the yarn hose maybe even braised could be attached to the hydrant and be long enough to reach words on pages
Paulie - braided
Barbie/K/WI - that sounds real cute
Paulie - put tape on end for the nozzle and to keep braiding together
Paulie - one picture and one or two words per page or maybe even one hose, two ladders, 3 helmets
Paulie - or maybe one dalmation
Paulie - lol
Paulie - doesn't do much for safety tho
Barbie/K/WI - very good ideas
Paulie - mayeb each kid could fix one page and it could be a big book
Barbie/K/WI - I think last year I had them color a truck and they wrote their name to complete the sentence, "_______ rides the fire engine."
Paulie - if you put it altogether
Barbie/K/WI - I have been making a book a week
Paulie - you could type out the words
Paulie - y could glue them on
Paulie - they
Paulie - or if you are studying the number one
Barbie/K/WI - is Fire Prevention week national? It is next week here
Barbie/K/WI - yes, we really need help with numbers
Paulie - one fire hose one firetruck one dalmation one cat in a tree one house on fire give them ideas and then each kid choose one and call it your ONE FIRE BOOK
Barbie/K/WI - only about half my kids can identify numbers 1-10
Paulie - yes it is national
Paulie - so jsut use the number one then do one (1)
Barbie/K/WI - Paulie, is all this off the top of your head?! Very creative
Paulie - gosh everyone else left
Paulie - yes u asked so am trying to help
Paulie - hi Erin
Barbie/K/WI - hi Erin
Paulie - (thank u)
Erin - Hi! Just dropped in to check out the conversation.
Paulie - great and welcoem Erin what gr?
Erin - Kindergarten
Paulie - you are in good company with other K teachers here
Erin - Super!
Barbie/K/WI - are you all day K
Erin - This is my second year teaching K
Erin - Yes, Barbie
Barbie/K/WI - do you have a good group? Lucky you!
Paulie - I love alld ay K best
Erin - Can I ask how you two feel about sight words in K?
Erin - We're having a grade level debate with our 1st teachers
Barbie/K/WI - just found out my school district is eligable to be a SAGE school but we don't have the room for additional teachers
Paulie - sight words are necvessary to learn to read soem are good
Paulie - what is SAGE?
Barbie/K/WI - oh, there isn't any discussion with our teachers, they except ours to know 25 by 1st grade
Paulie - well they should learn words like a the
Erin - Do you think that's reasonable? I do, but others don't.
Barbie/K/WI - don't know what it stands for but it is government funded and it limits class size to 15 in K, 1st and 2nd I think
Paulie - well they probably will most of them anyway
Erin - Since I'm still a newbie, I wanted other opinions
Paulie - yes they can do it if you point them out during shared writing and reading
Barbie/K/WI - I think those ready to read or have support at home will get them but what about the poor darlings who get no help at home
Paulie - wow Barbie that would be wonderful
Barbie/K/WI - I feel bad for them, and we are only 1/2 day, not a lot of time
Erin - *sigh* That's how I do it, and I do lots of fun games. Some of the others think it's "cramming" the 1st curriculum down their throats.
Paulie - if u do shared reading every day and don't isolate learning them by stupid flash cards they will learn them
Paulie - for 25 words
Riley - Just thoguth I'd check the EC chat tonight...been missing it for many weeks!
Erin - I'm really torn, because I like what I'm doing, but the others want us to present a united front.
Paulie - you know a list of things: a (picture of) book a (picture of) pencil a (picture of)
Paulie - what 25 words do u have to teach them?
Erin - Mom, Dad, the, I, a, and so on
Erin - We're asked to get them to a level 2 reading, as well.
Paulie - color words too?
Erin - I teach the color words as part of a unit, but they're not on the list
Paulie - well soem are ready to read and soem are not
Erin - Agreed
Paulie - said is another good one to learn
Erin - Uh-oh, my three year old is crying. I have to go see why he's out of bed. Thank you for the advice!
Erin - Good night, folks!
Paulie - bye Erin coem back if u can
mrsrancesongs - hi all....I wonder if someone can help me

mrsrancesongs - strange my mail was returned that way
mrsrancesongs - and I am only getting 1 0r 2 emails a day/ does that seem right ?
Paulie - it was returned cause they had full boxes or soemthign else if you send to t net let them deal with returns
mrsrancesongs - ok...thx/ gotta go

Keisha - my assistant does absolutely nothing
Just Me/Mi - We have already started with head lice at school
bowwowgirl - are you guys teachers
Paulie - that is tuff Keisha why won't they do what u ask that is what assistant means?
Keisha - yes
bowwowgirl - because that is my favorite singer name
Keisha - she told me she rather be more hands on with the kids
Keisha - but she does not want to help with any prep that may be needed
Paulie - tuff that is her job to assist
Keisha - we are half day and she said her hours are between 8:15 adn 12:15 AND she will leave without helping finishing the room
Just Me/Mi - I sent 3 home last week. I've been using headphone in the listening area. Do you know, should I do something between kids to make sure that if one has lice they don't all get them? We do monthly head checks but what about the time between checks?
Paulie - she must get low salary
Keisha - oh my just me
Paulie - lice do not cling to slick surfaces
Keisha - that has happened at son's school a lot this year
Kim - Hi everyone!
Paulie - just occasionally wipe with lysol water solution
Keisha - she is new, and she says she never stays anywhere longer than a year
Just Me/Mi - I know they don't cling but can they be there long enough to go from one kid to the next if they use the headphones within minutes of each other?
Paulie - jsut make sure they don't put their coats on top of others
Paulie - nope
Paulie - tell her to start ehr NEW journey NOW, Keisha
Keisha - lol, oh how i wish i could
Paulie - did u talk to yoru supervisor?
Paulie - Kim what gr do you teach in?
Kim - Kindergarten...I think we chatted another night. I love your website.
Keisha - our school is one of two in the county that teach a curriculum, we are apart of a church and she attends that church
Just Me/Mi - Coats are kept on hooks in closet. We remind kids often about not sharing hats, etc.
Paulie - o sorry I forget sometimes
Kim - Is there a way to chat without continually hitting the update on this chatboard?
Paulie - u have to do update to send
Just Me/Mi - Are we all Kdg?
Paulie - looks that way now
Kim - I don't get the messages on my screen unless I hit update. What's up with that?
Just Me/Mi - I hit "enter" on keyboard
Keisha - hmmmmm
Paulie - that is weird did u press resume at the top right if u don't say anythign for awhiel it removes your name
Kim - Okay thanks. Enough with chatboard 101 for the rookie. Heehee
Keisha - lol
Keisha - i always have to remember the current statements are at the top
Paulie - you can put the words goign down if u like
Kim - I had to figure that out too. I get spoiled by my Yahoo messenger I guess.
Paulie - see that backwards blue R to the left of the chatboard click on it
Paulie - your messages will start at op and go down
Kim - I'm at my computer making out my Christmas list ideas. How pathetic is that. I figure if I don't at least start getting ideas I'll be sunk in December.
Paulie - hmmmmmm I will be Scrooge so I won't have to plan
Paulie - (actually that is a good idea)
Paulie - I meant Kim's idea
Just Me/Mi - Christmas, you are way ahead of me. I just got my Halloween pumpkins yesterday.
Kim - I have a sibling who I have to keep two steps in front of or there will be no ideas left.
Paulie - Just Me there was a 2nd gr teacher earlier but she felt outnumbered I guess and left
Paulie - no ideas?
Kim - Okay, you're ahead of me, I have no pumpkins, but I do have a new puppy at my house.
Paulie - you got your Christmas puppy already?
Keisha - i have no pumpkins, no list, and no puppy
Just Me/Mi - what kind of puppy?
Kim - What units are you all teaching right now?
Paulie - I don't intend to make a list, get a puppy or buy a pumpkin
Paulie - not teaching, just wishing although I did sub for sunday school last week
Kim - A weimaraner puppy. They are the dogs they dress up on Sesame Street. He is 10 weeks and so cute and very lovable.
Paulie - Kim now you have to get the dog a Christmas present -- add it to your list!
Kim - We are working on our fall unit now, but will do fire safety next week.
Keisha - transportation
Kim - Thanks for pointing that out Paulie, I always know I can count on my teacher friends to keep me on track!!
Just Me/Mi - School pictures tomorrow then I'm testing the rest of this week. fire prevention next week. Then apples and pumpkins for the rest of the month
Paulie - lol Kim
Keisha - lol
Kim - What kinds of things are you doing for transportation Keisha?
Paulie - no one came to chat for such a long time tonight I finally left after 35 minutes of talking to myself
Paulie - her kids are becoming living trains
Keisha - lol,
Kim - Out school pictures and our field trip to the apple orchard were scheduled the same day this year. Pictures...change of clothes...onto the bus. After that supervising the trip was a breeze.
Keisha - yes, we are making trains
Paulie - well I think it is so cute that they will wear their trains with suspenders
Paulie - great Kim
Kim - Paulie, did you and yourself have a good chat?
Keisha - we started it out with an introduction from Gosley
Paulie - no I don't like to talk to myself because others might think I ahve money in the bank and i am poor with no job
Paulie - what is Gosley?
Keisha - our goose puppet
Kim - I was going to ask the same thing?
Kim - Oh
Paulie - and why a goos puppet with trains?
Keisha - he wanted to go to places and I asked the kids how could he get there
Kim - I thought I was missing out on some innovative author or something
Paulie - oh good idea!
Keisha - I had an array of transportion toys in a pillow case
Kim - That's a great idea.
Keisha - boats, trucks, school bus, etc
Kim - Then what, this is like a good book!!
Just Me/Mi - Sounds like fun
Paulie - did u guys know that if you have a Walden's book store they are haveing educator appreciationd ays Fri thru Sun and give 25 percent off on all books not already on sale and it is for teachers and retired teachers
Keisha - they brainstormed and then we talked about how he may get to other places
Keisha - as they named them I pulled them out
Paulie - swim?
Paulie - fly?
Paulie - walk
Paulie - educator appreciation days I emant
Paulie - meant
Keisha - i asked did anyone know what the word was things that carried us places
Kim - We always do transportation the beginning of Decmeber and read Polar Express. The kids and teachers put on PJs, slippers, robes...watch The Polar Express filmstrip, then get silver bell necklaces to wear while we make Polar Express ornaments for our tree and drink hot chocolate. It is such a fun day!!
Paulie - and they all said transportation?
Just Me/Mi - Another great idea!
Keisha - that sounds neat, I wish we had a Walden's books,
Keisha - no, they didn't have a clue . ...rofl
Paulie - what do the ornaments look like?
Kim - Paulie, maybe I should get some books for Christmas presents!!
Keisha - we do pajama day, make pillowcase prints, pet rocks , and read stories
Paulie - o well in K I ahve a big word of the week so you could do that they learn word and definition and then tell their parents before i reveal it in the Monday newsletter
Paulie - absolutely! I jsut bought the latest judy Blume book called Double Fudge it was so good read it last night
Keisha - that was how i introduced transportation
Keisha - i like that idea
Kim - The ornaments are made of construction paper, and then there is a colored strip through the center with a train and the title of the book The Polar Express. I have attached digital photos to the back with them drinking their hot chocolate in their PJs
Paulie - good plan Keisha
Paulie - o cute Kim
Paulie - How big are the ornaments?
Kim - I just bought my 9 year old Superfudge out of his book order. I hope he likes it.
need help quckk - teachers i need help
Paulie - I charge for help double the price for fast help
need help quckk - fast
Just Me/Mi - Hi help - what do you need?
Kim - About six inches in diameter. They turn out really cute. I had a picture of them on my website, but I just deleted files in order to build the site for this year's kindergartners.
need help quckk - teachers, what is the average amount for college and for which college
Paulie - are u the Kim of Kim's books?
Just Me/Mi - Kim - where is your website?
need help quckk - are there any t eachers in here?
Paulie - gosh u should archive the previous class thigns
Keisha - depends on if it is private or public
Keisha - or a community college
need help quckk - public
need help quckk - community
Paulie - or an ivy league school
need help quckk - lly dont matter
Keisha - just tuition
Kim - It's been so long since I've done the dorm, food, tuition thing. I just got my Masters and it was 225 per credit, so for 32 credits...Holy Man, it was $7200 dollars. I had never figured it out, but I'm pretty sure my raise wasn't that much.
Just Me/Mi - what college are you interested in. They vary - in state or out, Private or public.
need help quckk - yes
Keisha - community charge....around 30-50 per semester hour
Paulie - Kim are u the Kim of Kim's books?
need help quckk - im doing a report
need help quckk - hers
Kim - We are fortunate in our school district to get 100% of our tuition paid for up to 10 credits a year.
Paulie - nice Kim
Kim - No I'm not, but she has a great site doesn't she.
Keisha - in state tuition for a full time student at a public university
need help quckk - can one of you tell me what college you went to and how much you paid
Keisha - is about $1200-$1500
need help quckk - please
Paulie - go use a search engine for college info write in "college tuition"
Kim - Our friends child is a freshman at University of Minnesota and I thought they said it was over $20,000 a year...dorm, food, tuition, books. I know that it was not that expensive when I went to college in the late 80's.
meeha/ece/tx - Hi! How is everyone doing this evening?
Paulie - did u get the phonemic awareness pages ok and printed?
meeha/ece/tx - nhq -- i just finished my masters ... paid about $380/six hours -- had fed. sc holarship $$$ that paid about 70% of my degree!
Paulie - (I guess Kim is ignoring me)
Keisha - nc state university $ 24,000
Just Me/Mi - I have two in college now. One in public, one private. Plan on at least $20,000 or more.
Kim - I though you were talking to meeha
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- yes, and thank you! I"m sorry I didn't send you a note to let you know they came through ... busy as a one-armed paper-hanger here!
Paulie - nope can't be when I say Kim ae u the Kim of Kim's books site)
meeha/ece/tx - Hi Just Me!
Paulie - u told me u got them thru your sister but I did not know if u got them printed
Keisha - she said no she wasn't , but she has a great site
Paulie - I talk to everyone
need help quckk - what math knowledge or skill is used in techings?
meeha/ece/tx - need help -- what do you need? tuition info? Look at your university's website ... check several!
Kim - I typed in no........I wouldn't ignore you. But I do like her site.
need help quckk - teaching^
Paulie - need help we are not here to answer yoru survey please check out a search engine
Just Me/Mi - Paulie, did you try again to send phonemic awareness pages to me? I didn't get them.
need help quckk - i did that
Paulie - o ok jsut wondered thanks Kim I missed it i guess
need help quckk - im doing a paper
Kim - If tuition is truly that much, I am going to keep training our little girle who is 3 and loves her cash register...that way she can work at our local IGA store when she is old enough.
meeha/ece/tx - Just Me -- it is a HUGE file! I was amazed ...
Keisha - geometry, basic principles of shapes, patterns, basic addition, subtraction
Paulie - no Just thought u were gonna tell me that you cleared it I will send again tonight and see if it works this time
Keisha - problem solving
meeha/ece/tx - Kim -- get on-board your state's tuition savings plan ... it is a diamond in the rough! (perhaps a bit painful now, but it will pay for itself in 15 years!)
Paulie - Meeha it is a student asking for teacher help not a teacher
Paulie - meeha huge but worth it
Kim - We are working on patterns now. I had the children cut out a squirrel pattern and then stapled a cup to it. The kids cut out 10 orange, 10 red, and 10 yellow acorns to put in the squirrels cup. Tomorrow we will use the acorns to build patterns on a sentence strip.
need help quckk - thank you all so very much
meeha/ece/tx - need help -- why don't you go to the main chatboard and type in your questions ... you'll probably get a lot better answers f rom people who have time to think about the responses ... and when it isn't so close to bedtime.
Paulie - sounds good if they can cut anyway
Just Me/Mi - try for scholarships - fill out the FAFSA form. It is a government form that helps find tuition help.
Kim - They have good fine motor skills. The acorns are on 1 by 1 squres, so it was pretty simple cutting
need help quckk - because its due tomorrow
need help quckk - dont have a bed time
Kim - Our kids are 9 and 3. We have awhile, but already have savings started for them.
Paulie - oic
meeha/ece/tx - best advice I can give you, nhq, is "Plan ahead -- it wasn't raining when Noah built the ark!" It can be tough to get all your information together, but ..... Good luck! Hope your paper works out well!
need help quckk - yea
Just Me/Mi - good idea Kim
need help quckk - thanx meeha
need help quckk - thanx every one who helped me
Kim - What's oic Paulie?
meeha/ece/tx - Help them learn their strong-points, Kim ... they can always find someone who struggles in that area who needs a tutor!
Paulie - oh I see
Kim - Got it. I have to sign off. Thanks for chatting everyone. I hope you all have a super day tomorrow!!
Just Me/Mi - If they are athletic or have a talent in music or other fine arts they can get tuition help too
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite Kim -- have a wonderful tomorrow .
Just Me/Mi - Bye Kim!
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- you're awfully quiet here this evening!
Keisha - lol, i am being nosy
meeha/ece/tx - Are you a teacher, Keisha? Student?
SteveinNY - hello chatters!
Keisha - teacher of preppie K
Keisha - i was reading a thread which I thought was interesting
SteveinNY - hi meecha, hi keisha, paulie, justmeand need
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha, nice to greet you ... I work with preschoolers with special needs near dallas, tx.
Keisha - hello steve
meeha/ece/tx - hi jean -- welcome!
jean in nh - what part of ny steve?
SteveinNY - which thread, Keisha?
Just Me/Mi - Hi, Jean
SteveinNY - I'm on LI, jean
meeha/ece/tx - brb ... going for tea.
Keisha - really, I have a little boy I believe has autistic characteristics
jean in nh - what do you teach in LI
Keisha - the after five weeks nightmare on the K chatboard
Paulie - wow nothign for a few minutes and then a whole page full of words
jean in nh - we have to read fast paulie!
SteveinNY - Keisha, if that is the case, you should really find somebody who can evaluate him immediately, the sooner intervention takes place, the more likely he will develop normally, for lack of a better word
Just Me/Mi - I remember Keisha, has anything changed?
Paulie - this board is frozen again
Keisha - no, and I have tried and have not received any help
Paulie - hi stevce and jean
SteveinNY - Jean, I teach ESL in Middle school, what about yourself?
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- how so?
Keisha - my school is private and sometimes I question if they are after the $ or looking out for the best interest of the child
jean in nh - i teach esl K-12...seriously!oh yea,and adults on Sun.morning
Paulie - Steve waht gr level do u teach in?
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- have you talked with the parents?
Paulie - o never mind now I see it
SteveinNY - I teach adults, too 2 nights/week
Paulie - you like coming to primary chat steve? lol
SteveinNY - I'm in middle school
Keisha - he repeats everything you say, he spins around in circles on his head, it took him six weeks to learn the procedure for unpacking, he is not trained
SteveinNY - is that what this is? I didn't know
Keisha - he used to point and grunt
jean in nh - stesve, how many esl teachers in your school?and how many students do you see each day?
meeha/ece/tx - Often times private schools aren't set up to address the special needs of children with disorders like autism. They generally lack psych and diagnostic services ...
Paulie - right at the top it says early childhood
SteveinNY - Another state school person, great!
Keisha - i spoke with his mom and she said she noticed something was different about him
meeha/ece/tx - Would you like some information on autism -- both "characteristics" and "management"?
SteveinNY - JHean I am one of 2 in my school. I have groups of 4, 5, and 7, two times a day
Just Me/Mi - Do you have an Intermediate School District? In Michigan we can get help from them.
Keisha - i downloaded some things from a website, but anything you can lead me to or send me to will be appreciated
meeha/ece/tx - Steve, what does that mean? "another state school prpogram"
meeha/ece/tx - hang on a sec -- I've got some pretty good sites near at-hand.
jean in nh - i've been teaching esl in my school district since 1988...but as a "tutor." our numbers have slowly/steadily been increasing...been a "teacher" for 3 years now...tough to travel to all district schools and not have time to talk to other teachers...i'm at two elem.schools, middle, and high school, total of 8,but two are neps
Keisha - they called a lady who is supposed to come and observe him and she never showed up.....i haven' t seen the speech therapist and I asked for her four weeks ago
SteveinNY - Keisha, did you know that if your school doesn't provide services, that the child's local district is liable to pick up the tab for any special services like special diagnostic testing?
jean in nh - there are many good autism sites...my nephew was diagnosed two years ago, and it makes a big difference...know what works and what doesn't...also,things need to be coordinated between school and home
Keisha - yes, i started out going through the public school system and was redirected to these other people by my "director"
jean in nh - sorry folks,6 am comes early....zzzzzzzzzzzz
jean in nh - nice talking to you steve...been in nh for 22 years, but grew up in NYS
meeha/ece/tx - http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/autism.cfm is a government site with info re: autism ... good site!
SteveinNY - I guess I'll be going too, good night all and good luck Keisha!
Keisha - thanks steve
Keisha - i am bookmarking this site
Just Me/Mi - Bye, Steve and Jean
Keisha - today he hugged me for the first time....usually he does not want to be touched
jean in nh - good night all......have a great day tomorrow!!
Just Me/Mi - thanks for the site meeha. I also have an autistic nephew
Keisha - g'night jean
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, jean
Cher - Good evening..is the primary chat? or am I tooooooooooo late?
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite Steve hi Cher
jean in nh - that's fine with me.......don't come in here much...have you been to dave's esl cafe?that's a great site, and used to chat in there, but can't get in anymore...take care...
Keisha - and he will not play with other children
Keisha - no eye contact
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha, do you have time to write observation notes?
meeha/ece/tx - Cher-- it is!
Keisha - I have tons of them....
meeha/ece/tx - jean -- nice seeing you ... have a wonderful day tomorrow!
Cher - great! I have an autistic student.... hard to handle...full time shadow aide...."sigh"
meeha/ece/tx - They help a lot in getting help!
meeha/ece/tx - How are his fine motor skills?
Keisha -
meeha/ece/tx - Cher, what grade?
Keisha - he has none
meeha/ece/tx - ow good is the aide?
Cher - meeha..grade 2
Cher - meeha...they don't train our aides nor us..just dump them in our rooms *sigh*
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- is he "sensory defensive"? does he have things h e will and won't touch or eat?
meeha/ece/tx - Cher -- http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/autism.cfm will give you some good insights into autism (what it is)!
Paulie too - I froze and could not post or read so had to restart computer and thought I ahd to get a new name sicne I did not log out
Keisha - he usually will not touch anything
Cher - meeha..thank you...I have "guest visitors" in my room constantly..director of spec. ed...2 psychs....LSH...resource teacher...O.T....*sigh*
Keisha - since we are half day he brings his own snack
Paulie too - (did u miss me?)
Keisha - he will not try new things
meeha/ece/tx - I got some good info on shadowing from autismnet last night ... it is a yahoo chat group.
Cher - meeha..they give us all this "stuff" to read...but that doesn't stop the behaviors....and the constant interruptions....and on and on..and on..
Keisha - i was wondering what happened to you
Paulie too - u mean u didn't have any trouble posting?
meeha/ece/tx - Cher and Keisha, do your children have picture schedules to help them understand what is coming and when?
Keisha - no, i have been fine
Cher - meeha...well..she did...and ripped it off her desk..
Keisha - no, i am trying to get some
Just Me/Mi - welcome back Paulie, hi Cher
Keisha - i had a site bookmarked
Cher - meeha..but our schedule changes...we have many pullouts...
meeha/ece/tx - Children with autism respond (typically) positively with a very predictable routine. Picture schedules help them understand what is happening around them.
Cher - Hi just me/mi
Cher - meeha..yes..was told that...did that..but she ripped it off along with her nametag the first day
meeha/ece/tx - Children with autism tend to have VERY poor language processing skills ... tend to learn much better with visual cues.
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- one site with good "black line drawings" for schedules is http://www.dotolearn.com
Keisha - I really think they should have him evaluated and enrolled somewhere he can receive 1:1
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- the parents can contact the local school district OR their physician to get an assessment. the school district should provide a free assessment -- physician's assessment, well .....
Keisha - I can't give him what he needs, and that bothers me,
meeha/ece/tx - http://home.sar.rr.com/autismnet/preshadow.html describes what a "Preschool Shadow Aide" should be doing ... not too different from K or Grade 2 ...
Cher - Keisha..that is the same here....not only bothers me..but prevents other things from happening that would normally happen in my room....like painting...etc...
Paulie too - I got the public schools to do an eval on one of my 2nd graders when I taught in Lutheran school
meeha/ece/tx - Cher, what kinds of documentation are you using?
Keisha - I tried to send them that route, but I was halted and told that they would have someone come and observe him, she hasn't shown up
meeha/ece/tx - http://www.teacch.com/ has descriptions of a well-known program for working with individuals with autism.
Cher - I can't get either to open.. *sigh*
Cher - meeha..every 15 mins...with annotated records .....in the IEP ..and sent home daily
meeha/ece/tx - Cher -- the autismnet you'll need to go to http://www.yahoogroups and "join" autismnet to get into, I think
Cher - thanks meeha!
meeha/ece/tx - That is a LOT of work, Cher!
Just Me/Mi - Keisha - you are doing what he needs by trying so hard to get him the help he needs. I know how frustrating it is. It took me all last year to get help for 2 students. They are now both full time Special Ed after spending a year in regular ed. Kdg.
Paulie - o darn bye
Cher - yes..meeha.it is...and I am not qualified nor trained in spec. ed...didn't want to go into it either after teaching it 6 months on an emergency credential...*sigh*
meeha/ece/tx - CHer -- I can't get into it, either! let me see if I can find the address I first got the article from ...
Just Me/Mi - hi rugrat, welcome again Paulie
Keisha - you are right me, I am very frustrated....I feel like it is not a concern to them...and that frustrates me
Cher - thank you meeha..I would especially like the site with the shadow aide information again please
meeha/ece/tx - Cher and Keisha -- try this ... go to http://www.google.com and type "Preschool Shadow Aide" into the box ... the first response I got is that paper!
Cher - Keisha..I feel the frustration as well....then they wonder why teachers burn out..*sigh*
Just Me/Mi - I hear you loud and clear. I was so frustrated last year. I thought about quiting. I started looking for answers on the internet and that's how I found this place and people who got me through.
meeha/ece/tx - what other one wouldn't open for you, Cher?
Keisha - I know....today we were cutting out objects for our number book. I just had him stop...he was getting so frustrated
meeha/ece/tx - A good resource here will be the SPED chatboard ... send questions to them ...
meeha/ece/tx - Cher, is that working for you?
Cher - meeha.the first one
Cher - I got the shadow aide from google...thanks...but the first one....I think
meeha/ece/tx - nimh? hang on!
Paulie - this place?
Cher - Keisha..today mine decided she did not agree with the picture and what it represented....so she took her entire math stapled packet and totally crushed it all
Cher - Hi Paulie!
meeha/ece/tx - http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/autism.cfm
Paulie - hi Cher
Paulie - math packet? wht gr?
Cher - oops meeha it was the one that didn't have the www in it...not this last one.
Just Me/Mi - How many other students are you trying to teach while this is going on?
meeha/ece/tx - what other one did I share???
Cher - Paulie...2nd grade...
Keisha - see he will only tear something up if he becomes frustrated with it....the majority of the time he pays you no attention
meeha/ece/tx - let me look back and see what I can find ...
Cher - 20 students
Keisha - he is obsessed with power rangers and pokemon
Paulie - o good waa afraid it was a Kwith a math packet
Cher - Keisha..mine yells..screams..gets down on floor..rolls up like a ball....will pretend she is asleep on her desk....hides...
Keisha - he is not violent, he will break down and cry
Cher - Paulie..no...we have math run off and stapled by standards....this is a standard..and collated into a packet....*sigh*
Just Me/Mi - I had 20 plus "the 2". I felt guilty that 20 were on their own so much while I dealt with "the 2" but looking at the 20 now that they are in 1st grade they seem to be doing fine.
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha, it sounds like you've pretty much picked out a child w/ith autism! Keep after the parents and your school's adm. to get him checked out! (carefully!)
Paulie - how sad
Cher - Keisha.mine doesn't remember how to hold a pencil....can add and subtract negative integers...but does not know her times tables...nor how to use a ruler...
meeha/ece/tx - Cher -- I don't recall what the first one you're asking about was ...
Cher - she is gifted...but behavioral social skills are so deficit it is so truly sad
meeha/ece/tx - you can check back in ad day or two at http://www.teachers.net/archives ... all addresses (this transcript) will be there then!
Cher - meeha.thanks..
meeha/ece/tx - possibly ...http://131.103.210.15/cgi-bin/autism/htmls/login_process.asp# ... you'll just need to "register"
Paulie - times tables in 2nd gr?
Keisha - i know the feeling, we have told him 100 times his name starts with the letter J , showed it to him , traced it with his fingers over and over again
Cher - Paulie..no...the parents want her in a 5th grade math class...because she can do negative integers!
Paulie - tomorrow it wil be 101 times
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha, are you willing to invest $40 in a book to help you get started with him?
Keisha - YES
Cher - Paulie..and yes.times tables in 2nd grade...0,1,2,3,4,5, and 10's
Paulie - I had a second grader go to 3rd for math because he tested out on the end of 2nd gr test so well the first week fo school but
meeha/ece/tx - The title of the book is BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
Just Me/Mi - Hang in there Keiska and Cher. Keep after the parents and adm. like meeha says. I still feel some guilt for how last year went but I am glad that I kept bugging until "the 2" got the help they needed.
Paulie - oic when I taught 2nd they learned times tables in 3rd
meeha/ece/tx - The author is Catherine Maurice. You should be able to get it at a local bookstore -- I KNOW you can order if from amazon, bn, or PRO*ED publishers.
Paulie - 40 dollars is a lot for a book maybe the school would buy it
Cher - Paulie..they even do division.with remainders...LOL..easy but nevertheless..division
meeha/ece/tx - I've bought this particular book twice -- someone "borrowed" my first copy -- it is worth every penny ... but maybe the school will buy it!
Cher - sad...what we have pushed our students to "learn"
meeha/ece/tx - Cher -- what state?
Keisha - thanks , just me, the sad part is the teacher last year classified him as just being out there
Paulie - 8-)
Paulie - darn
Cher - California
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- this book will give you a progression of skills (motor, social, language, etc.) ... a "script" for addressing the skills ... and a great VERY BASIC description of Applied Behavior Analysis (pretty much recognized as the "treatment of choice" for children with autism)
Just Me/Mi - There's a difference as you and I both know. Be proud that you are doing something for this child instead of writing him off.
Paulie - where in CA Cher?
meeha/ece/tx - I just THOUGHT Texas was bad!
Cher - near san diego
Paulie - o think I asked u that before
Just Me/Mi - I think it's bad all over, Meeha.
hana/1/CA - is the primary chat ending?
hana/1/CA - cher
Paulie - (well, TX is bad)
Cher - okay...I must REALLY go...I have much to do...and am soooooooooooooooo exhausted every day...night all! take care..meeha thanks so much for the addys! really appreciate it!
Paulie - o shucks it is that time
Paulie - bye Cher
Just Me/Mi - Bye Cher
hana/1/CA - so what great ideas have I missed?
meeha/ece/tx - I'd agree with that, JustMe ...
Keisha - i am looking for the book now
meeha/ece/tx - hana, we've pretty much been talking about working with children with autism in the classroom for a bit now.
Paulie - k sped and things like that
meeha/ece/tx - you can read about it at http://www.teachers.net/archives here in a couple of days!
hana/1/CA - thanks, meeha
hana/1/CA - usually I come in too late to participate
meeha/ece/tx - Keisha -- did you get my e-mail address?
Keisha - well, I better go to bed , it is 12:14 am
Paulie - It is so funny how we never leave on time
Keisha - no
Paulie - we even stay the hour between the two chats
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, Keisha ... rest well ... and let me know if I can help! I'll resend my e-mail for you.

Just Me/Mi - It's late here too. I better go get my "beauty sleep" - school pictures are tomorrow!
Paulie - yes, that was fast
Paulie - Just me u will be beautiful will send the file again tonight
meeha/ece/tx - We, as classroom teachers, have to be advocates for parents and children! Help his parents learn about autism -- PLEASE use peer-reviewed materials! -- and work with them to get him the help he needs!
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite Just Me -- have a GREAT weekend!
Paulie - You are so compassionate meeha
