Sue - hi
Barbie/K/WI - do you teach in an elementary school?
Darcy/PK in PA - I teach Head Start for a school district in an elementary school.
Barbie/K/WI - ok, I was just wondering if you had a curriculum that you follow
jen - We are getting ready for NAEYC validation...no one has a clue...
Barbie/K/WI - our pre-k teachers have to develope one similiar to our K one which is based on the Standards
Darcy/PK in PA - no, not the dredded Standards!
jen - I am wondering if you guys have any words of wisdom for dealing with an aide who does nothing but be another adult in the room...?
Liz - Jen why won't your aide do anything?
Barbie/K/WI - what would you like your aide to do?
jen - that is an excellent question! Today, she told me she was leaving for an appt and wouldn't be in the whole day...everyone knew except me
Barbie/K/WI - I thank goodness for my aides! LOVE THEM!
Darcy/PK in PA - It doesn't always work, but write down a list of her responsibilities and yours. Post it in the room.
Liz - that is inconsiderate -- she should ahve given u warning for a day off unless it was an emergency
jen - she does things, but won't help me...she says that i need to be more strict and then when I am, she looks disapprovingly at me and I later find her making deals with the kids that were disciplined!!!!!
Liz - did u ever tell her a list of things u want her to do daily?
jen - nope liz, no emeergency, she was looking forward to a day off since last week! ((I was told)) I just got back from my honeymoon, so she wanted out of the classroom
Carol/pre K/WI - hi everyone; I don't mind the snow or cold but it drives me crazy when the weather goes from cold and snowy to warm and no snow. the kids never get use to putting all that stuff on
Liz - not good teacher should ahve the say in discipline
Liz - like she is undermining u
jen - shes been in the school 5 years! since the day it opened!
Liz - ould try to talk to her and havbe the principal present
Barbie/K/WI - that has to be uncomfortable to have her criticize you
Liz - Congrats Jen! wow a newly wed
jen - well, I tried but the principal and her are close friends...
jen - yes a mrs!!!we got married in disney
Barbie/K/WI - I totally understand that Carol
pez/k/FL - what's the topic?
Liz - maybe u need to talk to the schol board then?
pez/k/FL - Congrats, jen
Barbie/K/WI - how fun!
Liz - my son and his wife honeymooned in Disneyland in CA
jen - we really don't mesh well...she totally undermines me...! I am basically stuck...apparently, she talks a lot about me and it gets back to me of course
Liz - pez . . . just about anything you want to talk about Open chat tonight
Barbie/K/WI - and there is no way you could have a different aide assigned to you?
jen - thanks guys! but I came back to find my class was fresher than ever!
Liz - that is too bad she won't be a team jen
pez/k/FL - Sounds good, don't have aide advice.(don't have an aide)
Liz - so u did not ahve a good sub?
jen - nope, not at all...I feel like I am in a fish bowl!
Liz - jen things got to get better . . . they certainly can't get worse . . .
Liz - this is the place to ramble
pez/k/FL - jen, can you put her in charge of a group or have some things that need getting done everyday be her responsibility?
jen - I know what she's all about from last year...I was told from people who worked with her for 5 yrs that every class she has had has been off the wall...
Carol/pre K/WI - jen you fun info to ramble about
Liz - Then why does she get to still be an aide?
CoolSixy - Hello everyone-a pre-kindergarten teacher here
jen - I tried...that failed miserbaly! apparently, my sub was almost throwing up from the stress of nap time! (They're 3 and 4) And they were taking each other's blood pressure periodically throughout the day!
Liz - hi Cool what is a sixy?
Barbie/K/WI - Kindergarten here
CoolSixy - i was born with six fingers and six toes on each hand and foot so sixy is my nick name
jen - yeah carol...it's pretty funny! if you spent a day in my class you'd die laughing!
Liz - o well that is original
Hat - anyone have a favorite pumpkin activity? I want to do the pumpkin/witch story where you cut a pumpkin while you tell a story.'
Carol/pre K/WI - Had a class like that with an aide that was worse than the kids jen.
Liz - do u have to have special gloves made for you?
pez/k/FL - We started school on Aug. 7. I received a new boy in my room 2 weeks ago. HAs never been in school, is going to turn 6 in Dec. This poor boy is so far behind and already on 2 types of ADHD meds
CoolSixy - anything exciting happening in your calssrooms or any great activity ideas to share
Hat - oh, poor thing, pez!
CoolSixy - i don't have them anymore they were removed when i was a baby
jen - I even was doinf 2 circles in small groups but when I was away, they didn't do it so I am not going to continue..it's more work for me!
Liz - yes that pumpkin story is quite cute
Carol/pre K/WI - jen what do the parents have to say or are they not noticing anything
pez/k/FL - It's Red Ribbon Week for us so I'm trying to integrate halloween and that
jen - The orange house hat?
Barbie/K/WI - Red Ribbon Week here too
Hat - I found some Halloween erasers and I set them out on a table. If children can make a pattern and tell me their pattern, I give them a sticker.
Barbie/K/WI - are you all day K pez?
pez/k/FL - Yes, Barbie-all day
Barbie/K/WI - cute Hat
Hat - jen-You cut it out on orange paper and you end up with a jack-0-lantern
jen - carol..the parents actually go to HER! she gets them on the bus int he morning so they see her and not me...she had the nerve to write notes home and had her buddy the principal draft a special letter about bringing more than 1 snack and drink and now they're bringing so many I have to send them back home!
Hat - jen-the idea is from the k chatboard.
Liz - the link is posted on the K board
jen - I like that one hat!
Hat - thanks, Barbie
Barbie/K/WI - oh jen, that sounds like a miserable situation
Liz - it shows all the correct cuts and the whole story
jen - we are making pumpkin shakes tomorrow and exploring the insides of a pumpkin, roasting seens etc.
pez/k/FL - My kids did the Dem Bones graphing activity today. Those candies are so cute
Hat - sounds like a fun day, jen
pez/k/FL - Pumpkin shakes?
Liz - I don't think I would want a pumpkin shake
jen - yeah barb it stinks! but I smile and move on...I keep telling her not to walk around the school complaining!
Hat - pez-I have never done that activity but it seems neat.
Liz - now, roasted seeds are great if you put salt on them
jen - it sounds nasty, but it's milk banana and canned pumpkin with some cinnamon...
jen - definitely needs that salt liz!
Liz - yuk
pez/k/FL - Hat, my first time doing it too. Once I demo'd a few pieces I sent them to their tables and they had no problem (except my new boy)
Liz - leave out the pumplin I love banana shakes
jen - well, I'll see if they like them...we're going to make a graph...((I agree liz!))
Carol/pre K/WI - is it canned pumpkin with the pumpkin spice already mixed in
jen - yes like pumpkin pie filling...
Liz - do u think they will even try to eat them?
Liz - if it is that kind of pumplin why do u add more cinnamon
jen - pez, what is dem bones? that orange house on k board shows you the cuts
Liz - make sure your graph is really long I bet all will ahve under yuk side
pez/k/FL - We're going to make spiders out of oreo cookies and licorice on Thurs. I have to be at an all day meeting tomorrow which is really cutting into some neat activities
jen - to disguise the pumpkin? I am not sure liz...I never made it before the class next door and I are making it together
pez/k/FL - jen, it's sweet tart candy in the shapes of skeleton parts. I ordered the candy from Oriental Trading.
jen - my class is very adventurous with food...
Liz - some drug stores sell dem bones also u ahve to look for it tho
pez/k/FL - I have a boy with severe peanut and egg allergies so I have to be really careful
jen - cool pez! what tye of graph do you do?
Liz - Jen, if you tell the kids what it is they won't eat it
Hat - pez-only oreo cookies and licorice? sounds like what i'm looking for
pez/k/FL - let me find the link
Liz - Jen there is a paper that is going around for the graph I don't have it tho
Barbie/K/WI - you all have a good night, It's bedtime for me!
jen - Youre probably right....but they like to eat what they make...we'll see, maybe I'll scrap it?
pez/k/FL - hat, I'm not sure what else. My wonderwoman volunteer mom is getting the stuff
Carol/pre K/WI - my kids will try almost anything as long as I also try it and they help make it
Hat - ok, thanks, pez
Liz - well that leaves me out I won't eat canned pumpkin without cooking it
Liz - bye barbie
Liz - too late
Hat - for thanksgiving last year we made a stew. kids tried it, but i don't want to make it again.
jen - it's not a whole can of pumpkin only a tbsp...enough for a taste!
Liz - jen then might as well leave it out lol
Carol/pre K/WI - hi Room203
jen - I need some nutrition ideas...anyone have any cute ones?
Carol/pre K/WI - hi just wondering
jen - oh liz...
Liz - hmmmmm, I think I said hi hat a long time ago . . .
Hat - oops, I misunderstood, Liz. I thought you were saying hi to everyone! LOL
Liz - hi again hat
Room203 - hi room
pez/k/FL - sorry, the link won't copy.
pez/k/FL - I'll keep trying
Liz - no I meant room 203 but it is ok hat hi again hat
Liz - can't u type the link?
pez/k/FL - just had an idea. I'll just open another window
Hat - I have not been doing zero the hero. I am going to start this week. anyone already doing it. I'm going to get washers for them to make a necklace.
Liz - oops I meant to smile
Liz - love zero hero do you have a puppet?
just wondering - Anybody know any really good Big Books for shared reading with little guided reading books to go along with the big books?
pez/k/FL - http://www.teachingheart.net/dembonesgraph.DOC
Liz - hi greeneggs
KT - What is Zero the Hero?
Liz - good job pez
Carol/pre K/WI - What or who is zero hero
Hat - I have a zero the hero puppet, but I have to find it.
GreenEggsNHam - Hi, new to room
Carol/pre K/WI - hi green eggs
pez/k/FL - LOL, Liz, thanks
GreenEggsNHam - but I have a question and concern
pez/k/FL - Hi Gtreen
Liz - zero the hero is a puppet that a grad student developed for her master thesis in CA
Liz - ld not profit from the puppet because it was her idea in her paper
jen - pez-couldn't get it!
pez/k/FL - Really?
Liz - it shows the importance of zero in numbers
pez/k/FL - Hold on let me try again
GreenEggsNHam - Hi Pez
Hat/again - tried to check link for dem bones. My computer never lets me check out neat things.
KT - I have an internet acquaintance that says she invented the Zero the Hero and has a poster that is suppose to be out soon in the teacher stores. She is a vetaran teacher in CAl
jen - that sounds cool zero the hero...
Liz - yes I went to a class at ucla and heard about the lady who developed zero hero for her thesis
GreenEggsNHam - I have a parent/aide at my school who thinks if she writes a note to me
GreenEggsNHam - her child is excused from homework
Liz - KT well it might be her
pez/k/FL - okay, try this link and click on the link where it says where it is. Does that make sense? http://www.geocities.com/teachingwithheart/dembonesactivity.html
Liz - but she was told she could not profit from it because she used it in her thesis paper
Liz - no one is excused from homework
jen - thanks pez!
KT - This lady just invented it last year, According to her emails to me.
Liz - pez yes she put it on her site It is not hers originally tho
Hat/again - I found a link today that had zero the hero songs on it. There is a CD with a zero the hero song. I didn't know.
Liz - o I missed Lisa darn she left
GreenEggsNHam - I know, her child will have 30 minutes after school to complete the assignment
Liz - KT that is a big lie
Hat/again - I didn't invent Zero the Hero? LOL
Liz - I used zero hero 5 years ago and it was invented before that
GreenEggsNHam - but she is going to throw a fit to administration
jen - shared reading books someone asked about...mouse mess is a cute one...
Hat/again - yes, I went to a workshop about 4-5 years ago and they were teaching us about zero the hero. so he's been around for years.
Liz - who asked about shared reading books?
Liz - maybe this site is going too fast tonight
pez/k/FL - We use the Wright Group books for shared reading
jen - does anyone use a rotating schedule? like you change up what you do from time to time? or do you do everything the same every day?
GreenEggsNHam - has anyone else had a problem with teacher/aides kids feeling they are exempt from work
Hat/again - pez-there is a wright group sale. the wishy washy books, the meanies, and something else for $99
jen - someone did...liz
Liz - jen when I taught K I always did some whole group and some rotating centers
GreenEggsNHam - their parents are employees?
pez/k/FL - I don't have an aide, Green, so no problem here
jen - my kids whose parents are teachers are always late and behave horribly
pez/k/FL - Really, Hat? We just got some books ordered. Haven't gone through all of them yet
Liz - actually a song about zero hero was on school house rock long before that this CA lady just invented the pop up puppet
Carol/pre K/WI - I rotate small group activities throughout the week but I kept the routine and time the same
Hat/again - yes, that was the CD I saw today, Liz. It was a school house rock CD about zero the hero
Hat/again - pez-I saw the sale because I just ordered the videos for the sunshine at home program
pez/k/FL - I have to go. The chat was nice. Good night everyone
Hat/again - nite, pez
jen - I can't seem to keep a routine...my class seems to do better with quick quick activities...tiring for me! But sometimes I have a project that might take longer so I'll swap it..I was thinking of making a magnetic schedule that I can change if I need to sot hat kids know what to expect? I go over our schedule every morning
Carol/pre K/WI - We have a policy that the parent/employee can't work in the same class and they try not to have them in the same building which helps some
jen - I have what they call courtesy placements for teachers in the district who live out of district
jen - Well, off to do my anecdotal records...fun!
jen - talk to you again...
KT - Do any of you teach K
KT - Just wondering if you use BB or 4 BLOCKS
mrbuck - hey - was wondering about home reading programs - what do you do?
Hat/again - I use BB
mrbuck - we use 4 blocks - what's BB
KT - BB is Building Blocks the K version of 4 blocks
sotpteach - i teach k. i use the student of the day from bb but i tailored it to my own taste
Hat/again - i love the name cheers
KT - I like most of the program. But find it is diffucult to fit it in my
KT - I like most of the program. But find it is diffucult to fit it in my
KT - I like most of the program. But find it is diffucult to fit it in my
sotpteach - it was really the only thing i found in the book that wasn't already common good teaching practice
mrbuck - i use special child of the day for my writing program - it makes the kids feel super and it is an interesting thing to write about
KT - whoa!!!! Don't know what happened. My computer had a blackout.
Carol/pre K/WI - how do the name cheers go
sotpteach - i teach a half day k program (a morning session and an afternoon) does anyone teach a full day program?
Hat/again - name cheers (how I do them) write name on a sentence strip and place it in a pocket chart. You write name again on another piece of sentence strip and cut it up and have the child put it back together. There are lots of parts to this.
Hat/again - i usually say the name cheer first then have the student come up and do it.
Carol/pre K/WI - Hat/again, that different then the ones I do was just wondering
Hat/again - where did you learn your from, carol?
KT - Name cheers are like cheerleading cheers. The children say somthing like Give me a T. The class says T. Give me an E. Class says E then same for D. What does that spell. Ted, Say it again. TED. Yeah! Kids love to be recognized that way. You can also hold up the letters while saying it.
Hat/again - extended day 8:30-1:05
Hat/again - I like that, KT (the say it again)
Carol/pre K/WI - I was at a local training and I think this K teacher developed herself or got from another training not sure
Hat/again - some people are so creative and can think up all this wonderful stuff for us.
Hat/again - I may start the student of the day again. I like drawing the picture and writing their name part
Hat/again - gonna go surf for more info.bye
sotpteach - i use some of the student of the day method for some theme words
Carol/pre K/WI - the name cheer I do Has the child's name which we say and sign and say each letter in their name. Then each child has said two things they like and then we say the name again and spell it again
KT - I am always looking for creative ways to teach things. Today I read The little Old Lady Who was afraid of Nothing. I drew pictures of the parts of the book that were repeated and then had the kids put them in sequentional order. They really had fun with it.
Liz - I hate when the room womn't move and I ahve to log off and can't get back in This happens all too frequently
KT - Yesterday I read Dinosaurs Halloween and drew pictures of 4 different parts of the story and then had them put them in sequential order. They also used them to retell the story. This is fun for them and for me.
Liz - hi sotpteach what does your name mean?
sotpteach - it is an acronym for a group of people who do improv comedy locally
Liz - hi celena did n' t mean to miss u when greeting
Liz - oic thanks
Carol/pre K/WI - any burning issues celena
sotpteach - liz and celena, what do you teach?
Liz - hoping to get to teach K again
KT - Has anybody tried the KCrews Buzz Book and if so is it worht the $50 they want for it?
Liz - Is everyone justy quiet or is this room freezing again?
Liz - never heard of it
KT - By freezing do you mean it keeps blanking off and coming back again.
KT - By freezing do you mean it keeps blanking off and coming back again.
Liz - no I mean it does not move
Liz - Now it seems to be working again
KT - Buzz books are suppose to be pre made interactive morning messages created by a group of K teachers in texas. They have a lot of interesting stuff and a web site under the K Crew

denetta - so all here are early childhood?
soccerimma - gb

KT - I teach K in Norhtern Indiana. In a small rural area.
Liz - explain more Carol what is that?
denetta - small desert town CA
Liz - Yes, most of the people that come to an early childhood-primary chat are teachers of those grades
denetta - i missed the title...where do i look for upper grade chat
Liz - I was trying to figure what city or state gb was. . . lol I guess it means good bye
KT - Are anecdotal records anything like Portfolio assessments?
Carol/pre K/WI - We observe the children and record those observations and then use them to plan activities for the next week building on interest and stregthns
Liz - denetta the chats are scheduled there are upper gr ones too
Carol/pre K/WI - It can be a part of it
Liz - other day
KT - Sounds rather time consuming. But interesting.
Liz - well soudns developmentally appropriate for preschool to me
Carol/pre K/WI - It can be but it really gives I complete picture of the children in my classroom
Carol/pre K/WI - We use the High Scope curriculum and observations are a major portion
Liz - o maybe I spoke wrong u r preK?

meeha/ece/tx - Hi! How are you folks doing this evening?
meeha/ece/tx - what are we talking about this evening?
Liz - hi this is paulie incognito don't blow my cover
meeha/ece/tx - why all the double-talk?
meeha/ece/tx - Hi jen -- how are you doing this evening?
jen - i am good. just got home from a week in san antonio.
denetta - meech and jen....what grades u teach?
meeha/ece/tx - a week in old San Anton ... did you enjoy yourself? Was it as wet t here as here in the Dallas area?!!!
jen - i teach 2nd in california.
meeha/ece/tx - Hi denetta -- I work with preschool-aged kiddos in a special education setting.
meeha/ece/tx - You?
denetta - 4-5 loop
meeha/ece/tx - I'm starting to think "looping" and the "old one-room school house" are good concepts for teaching and learning!
jen - wow denetta, you r a saint. i've never taught above 3rd grade.
meeha/ece/tx - 'evening, finch
denetta - i feel the same as you in reverse...i couldn't stand it when i taught Kinder
meeha/ece/tx - what are we going to discuss this evening?
meeha/ece/tx - denetta ... I'm kind of with jen ... I wouldn't consider working with a class over the grade of one or two! Big kids (en masse) are NOT my forte!!!
