parrothead - what grade you teach?
KMc - Pre-K
parrothead - how do you like it? I am just getting certified now for elementary ed
KMc - I love Pre-K , I'm going through National Board Cert right now and am having trouble with videotaping, etc, It doesn't seem geared for Pre-k
parrothead - which state do you teach in? and what does videotaping entail?
KMc - Illinois, We have to tape a whole group lesson for 15 minutes, which is a long time for 3-4 year olds
parrothead - no kidding. I used to work at a day care center with 4 yr olds, I used to go home so exhausted every day!
parrothead - Hi spedtchr68-what grade do you teach?
spedtchr68 - Middle School, but most of my students function around a 1st-3rd grade level
spedtchr68 - I used to be a early childhood person
KMc - why did you leave?
spedtchr68 - I did everything from infants to 2nd grade
spedtchr68 - Because I feel it is important to experience all grades.
spedtchr68 - Anyway I am planning on doing a doctorate and working with older kids will be helpful when generating research.
parrothead - do any of your schools have computers in the classroom and how often do they get used by students?
spedtchr68 - My classroom has three computers in it.
spedtchr68 - we use it them all the time.
sra/ga/1 - We have four computers in our classrooms and it depends on how the teachers use them.
sra/ga/1 - Some of us, use the computer to during our literacy centers
parrothead - how do you talk to kids about internet safety?
spedtchr68 - Well, we have it blocked.
sra/ga/1 - Our system has our computers blocked
Addie/mo - all of our classrooms have at least one networked computer, and we have two computer labs. the students have 50 minutes per week of computer lab time with a computer teacher. the classroom computers are primarily used for accelerated reader, but some classrooms use the internet for research, etc. we also have two emints classrooms, which is a Missouri program to use technology as a tool in inquiry based learning. there is one computer for every two children, a teacher workstation, smartboard, digital camera, scanner and color printer. these teachers received 75 hours of training on integrating computers. they do some great stuff.
parrothead - but do you have class computer rules?
spedtchr68 - I do.
Addie/mo - we have a school district acceptable use policy. then I am sure individual classrooms have rules and procedures for using the computers
sra/ga/1 - spec I teach in Paulding
Addie/mo - I am not sure exactly how internet safety is addressed. I am sure it is done in the computer class time. the students are not allowed to give personal information on the web
parrothead - other than for e-mail or the Internet what are some of the great programs or projects most of you use computers for with kids?
spedtchr68 - I have rules posted next to the computers.
spedtchr68 - I use a lot of software programs.
sra/ga/1 - In our district, the parents have to sign giving their children permission to use the internet and we also have to sign agreeing that we will not let the students go into areas not allowed
sra/ga/1 - We also have a computer lab and a paraprofessional who runs it for us.
Addie/mo - parrothead, I have several of my online projects from teaching kindergarten on a website...http://www.geocities.com/enchantedforest/7914 if it doesn't work right away, try again. the site is using too much bandwidth and geocities shuts it off when it has exceeded its bandwidth for the hour.
sra/ga/1 - Parrot, I have used the computer to have my students make a class book with the program Inspiration
parrothead - I guess I have a ton of questions b/c I haven't started teaching yet...sorry if I am boring anyone!
Addie/mo - we use the jumpstart programs for all elementary grades, also Carmen San Diego and magic school bus cds. a really good cd for early grades is chicka chicka boom boom.
sra/ga/1 - No! Your questions are great!
Addie/mo - our projects included a flat stanley project and a traveling mascot project
parrothead - Addie, I will check out the site after this, thanks for the info
bob - can you tell us more about Inspiration
spedtchr68again - I love Inspiration. And Kidspiration. Those are great to help with writing skills.
sra/ga/1 - Addie, I love Flat Stanley!
parrothead - what's Flat Stanley and where do I go to find out?
spedtchr68again - Inspiration is a graphic organizer
bob - have you read invisible stanley
sra/ga/1 - One year one of my students received one from her cousin and we sent him a Flat Sally and wrote a letter about how he met a friend a long the way!
Addie/mo - flat stanley is great. one of the third grade teachers in my building and I are doing a workshop on flat stanley projects for the early childhood conference at Missouri southern state college in February
spedtchr68again - Kidspiration is for kids in grades k-2, and Inspiration is for older students 3 graders and up.
bob - who makes kidspiration
Addie/mo - yes, invisible stanley is hilarious. I read all the stanleys to my class when I taught. I didn't like stanley and the magic lamp as well as "flat" and "invisible"
spedtchr68again - I forget, if you give me your email address, I can email who makes it.
kp - hi am new to this took me awhile to figure it out, am taking a technology class for ed cert and our chats have been interesting
Addie/mo - flat stanley is a book by jeff brown about a little boy who gets flattened by a bulletin board and has all sorts of adventures. you can read more about the project on line at my site if you go there later
Addie/mo - hi kp, welcome
parrothead - kp, are you at SHU?
spedtchr68again - I use a lot of software.
sra/ga/1 - Well, have to go! Enjoy your conversations and it was great!
bob - all my grade 2's made themselves flat, chose a friend to send them to, and in a letter asked their friend to take pictures around where they live. we await letters and pictures from all over the world. I guess that is called a virtual fieldtrip
Addie/mo - also on software, I like kidpix and also I have seen kids to great things with productivity software such as powerpoint and word
parrothead - well I guess we are in online class together! KP
spedtchr68again - Kidpix is ok. I love the Edmark programs.
Addie/mo - so, kp and parrothead are in the same class?
parrothead - if she/he is in SHU we are!
spedtchr68again - Intellitools and Don Johnston are great too.
Addie/mo - spedtcher68, what are some of the edmark programs?
spedtchr68again - Bailey's Book House
parrothead - ok you guys are losing me-what do you do with all these programs you're mentioning?
spedtchr68again - Mighty Math: Carnival Countdown and Zoo Zillions are great for primary
Addie/mo - oh, I have seen that program. we have it in our early childhood lending library. good program
spedtchr68again - Thinking Science
spedtchr68again - Trudy's Time and Place House
spedtchr68again - Bailey is great
parrothead - kp are you lost?
spedtchr68again - excellent for emergent and beginning readers
lildixegirl - hi everybody, my husband is in the military and flat stanley came to visit him in Kuwait last year. It was as much fun for him as it was my nephew to receive the pictures and flat stanley back.
spedtchr68again - You can tailor Mighty Math to a kids individual needs.
kp - yes, but I am furiously writing down the info so hopefully I won't lose the info, I did miss addie/mo's website though. could u repeat/
Addie/mo - how neat for your nephew. marcy, the third grade teacher I am presenting with had one of her students send one to peter jennings. they got back an autographed, framed photo with peter and stanley
parrothead - I haven't done the chat online yet...have you? KP
bob - did your husband know who sent him the project
Addie/mo - these meetings are archived, so you can refer to them later. it is usually within a day or two
lildixegirl - yes, we emailed him ahead of time, so he was expecting it and flat stanley got to ride on an apache over the Kuwait desert, it was cool
parrothead - her website was www.geocities.com/enchantedforest/7914
kp - isn't that what we are doing now/ parrothead
Addie/mo - the website with the internet projects is http://www.geocities.com/enchantedforest/7914
spedtchr68again - Intellitools and Don Johnston are also good.
parrothead - no..I meant the chat experience we have to respond to under Forum, kp
parrothead - how often do you all talk with teachers from other countries in this site's chat rooms?
Addie/mo - parrothead, teachers net has a regular chat too. see where it says change rooms on the left? you click that and then choose another room. the first two rooms are just chat, not necessarily ed related
kp - thnx Addie/mo, parothead no ill do it when I log off here.
Addie/mo - I have only been chatting a couple of times a month lately, but often there are people from Australia and Canada in the chatrooms, sometimes England and Mexico too
parrothead - I was in that earlier Addie but nobody was talking about ed stuff so I felt bad interrupting conversation
Addie/mo - you just kind of have to jump in. most people will chat about whatever someone wants to chat about. if you go on a Friday or Saturday night sometimes there are a bunch of people in there and it is hard to keep up with what is going on
parrothead - any classes you'd recommend grad students to take that would be beneficial to teaching? anyone?
parrothead - chat rooms are actually strange b/c now I know somebody from my class is here but since you have never met the person its weird!
Addie/mo - parrot, do you mean workshops or college classes?
parrothead - both...
Addie/mo - depends on your level you will be teaching in...early childhood, I recommend math their way, building blocks or four blocks
parrothead - I was researching technology standards on the web earlier..any comments about that?
Addie/mo - I am not sure on college classes, usually they have certain ones you have to take for the degree...not much choices
parrothead - geez my spelling is bad tonight
Addie/mo - oh, oh, oh, love and logic! (jim fay) that is excellent for class mgt
parrothead - person? did he write a book?
Addie/mo - I am not sure about technology standards. it seems that there are standards for everything these days. accountability is the mantra!
kp - thank for letting me listen in everyone good night Parrothead, I know how u feel that anonymous feeling is gone
Addie/mo - yes, jim fay is the co-author of several books for teachers and parents. excellent stuff
Addie/mo - bye, kp
kp - thnx Addie/mo, parothead no ill do it when I log off here.
Addie/mo - well, gotta go! nice chatting with ya!
parrothead - well I off to fill out my chat review online thanks Addie for al the great advice!
