Kathy/5/IA/moderator - Welcome, I'm glad you decided to join us! We are discussing ways to help ESL students in the classroom.
Sherry/3rd/Tx - Thanks! I've never done this before!
Sherry/3rd/Tx - I'm looking forward to it.
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - This is my second year having ESL students, so I'm looking for lots of ideas myself!
Sherry/3rd/Tx - How long have you been teaching,Anne?
Anne - I am looking for ways to include all children in the classroom. Even though we have a migrant population in our area we do not see them until the summer.
Anne - I have been teaching for 27 years in middle school.
Anne - How long have the rest of you taught? What grades?
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - True, Anne - many of our students struggle, not just those who have English as a second lang. We need strategies for all of them.
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - Anne, I've just completed my 17th year. My first 15 years were in "small town Iowa" where I didn't have any ESL students. Now I'm in a larger city in Iowa.
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - We have about 54% ESL in my school. I also teach 5th grade.
MG - My concern about teaching ESL students is reaching their needs while there are others in the classroom.
Barb - Does anyone know of a good diagnostic reading/writing test to meet the NYS ela requirements?
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - I use group work in my reading and science classes, MG where I incorporate all students.
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - What does ela stand for?
MG - I've had some good training and learned that the other students are great teachers for the ESL students, but I still feel that I can do more.
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - I also use some of the 4-block material - like working with words that I feel helps all students.
Barb - English Language Arts. New York just started a new standards program with heavy testing in 4th grade. If the students test in the 2nd quartile you need to give them a diagnostic test to assess their needs. I am a reading teacher and the Woodcock test and other reading tests won't meet the need.
firstgrade/il - I love the four blocks model? Do you know of any books that I can buy that explains it more? I have the month by month guide for teaching first grade and its great!!
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - Classrooms that work is a good book, first. By Pat Cunningham
firstgrade/il - Does that actually give you ideas for the four blocks model?
MG - I've just spent 3 years in first grade and loved it. I am fond of Cunningham's ideas and enjoyed the word sorts and the word wall.
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - Yes, MG ... so does The Teachers Guide to Four Blocks and Implementing Four Blocks.
Barb - Firstgrade/il Do you know an alphebet book called Anamalia? It is beautiful and the pages are full of pictures of all sorts of things that start with the particular letter.
MG - Kathy, are you saying that I can use P.C.'s ideas for the ESL students and all the fifth grade students on the same lesson.
Kathy/5/IA/moderator - I have been. After the lesson I may then work with smaller groups if I see the need.
ces - I had a student last year that didn't speak any English. I found it very difficult. I would like some suggestions and share - anyone interested?
first grade/il - Did you have an esl teacher in your building ces?
ces - We didn't have an esl teacher. Just him and I, 17 other students! I didn't speak his language, either.
ces - I started by making notecards for items in the room, subjects, days of the week, etc. Spanish on one side, English on the other. I used a language dictionary and pointed a lot!
MG - ces has a good idea, is it appropriate for 5th graders? What do you suggest for my fifth graders? I, too, did this for my first grade room, but now I'm transfered back to 5th grade. Any suggest that relate to your idea.
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - What type of cards did you use MG. Sounds like an interesting idea.
ces - I didn't put them around the room. I used them as flash cards for individual work. The student I had was really shy.
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - What kind of info was on the flash cards?
ces - He helped me make them. I pointed to the object, said it in English, and he was able to write it in Spanish. I checked them with a Spanish/Eng. dictionary. I made them for days of the week, subjects, cafeteria, gym, etc. Spanish on one side, English on the other
ces - Anything else that came up, we made a new flash card.
MG - Well, someone said that they put written cards labeling classroom objects ... "clock", "close". I am wondering how I can use Pat Cunningham's 4-block ideas in 5th grade.
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - That's a good idea, ces! It is important for the ESL student to connect to their first language.
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - I use the word wall in 5th, the making big words activities, and I use Literature Circles which is an extention of guided reading for the upper grades.
ces - It was easy for other students to help him. I also used computer software that he could point to an object and the computer would say the English word
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - I also use the silent reading and writer's workshop
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - Do you know the name of the software?
ces - The real problem was content area, such as social studies and science. Surprisingly, math and English was easier for him. I'm not for sure of the name of the software. It's at school.
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - I see the content areas more difficult for the students also. I use a lot of hands-on in science.
ces - MG - I'm not familiar with 4-block.
MG - Kathy and ces, my is short. Thank you for the ideas! ces- you must be a great teacher. I will use Kathy's ideas in 5th. It's a good thing that I have this summer for research in connecting 5th grade with 4blocks.
ces - Tell me about 4 block
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - Patricia Cunningham has a 4-block approach to teaching reading.
ces - How is it used (or what are the 4 blocks?)
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - The four blocks are: Guided reading, Writers Workshop, Self Selected Silent Reading, and Working With Words.
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - The best way to learn more about 4-blocks is to read Cheryl Sigmon's articles that are here on teachers.net.
ces - I will look them up - thanks!
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - They are located on the 4-block grade board.
ces - I need to go also - thanks for the info.
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - The articles are excellent!
Kathy/5/IA Moderator - Thanks for coming tonight.
