Kathy/5/IA - Welcome to the elementary/middle school chat.
ray - what are your alternatives to corporal punishments?
Kathy/5/IA - Well, I don't believe in corporal punishment at all.
Kathy/5/IA - I'm there to help my students in a positive manner.
ray - when you have a child act up how do you take control?
Kathy/5/IA - I set up a positive atmosphere so I don't need take control. I've taught 18 years and have never had a problem.
ray - have you ever taught any grade under fifth
ray - kjh what grade do you teach
kjh - 5th
kenney - Hello-any kindergarten teachers?
kjh - self-contained, except for math (we level) and science (I team teach with another teacher)
ray - do you teach kindergaten?
kenney - yes, this is my third year
kjh - ray, what grade do you teach?
Kathy/5/IA - I have reading and science with the 5th graders i teach.
ray - how do you discipline a child that acts up?
kenney - I am dealing with state standards, CA - anyone have any ideas?
zoe - It sounds as though Ray wants to chat about discipline.
ray - i dont teach any grade i'm a student at randolph macon college in ashland virginia and i need some advice from you all
Kathy/5/IA - In Iowa we don't have state standards ... just district ones. (we are the only state that doesn't have state standards.)
zoe - Are you working on a project?
Sandra - I've been teaching 2nd grade for 12 yrs and I have a bad discipline problem.
ray - i would like to know how you all proceed to take care of a child who will not listen
Sandra - I need info on the same things Ray
ray - before sending him/her to the principal
ray - my mom teaches 1st grade and she says
Kathy/5/IA - I'd make sure you are documenting the interventions used. Try different things - talk to the child, change their seating, talk to their parents, etc...
ray - an ultimatum
Sandra - done it all
EMA/7th - ray, how old is this child?
ray - anywhere from 2-10 i guess
ray - i'm writing a paper on corporal punishment
zoe - Sandra, does your school have some "set" consequences?
Kathy/5/IA - I have one who had trouble listening. We are now going through a month trial to see if he is ADHD. We are charting his progress. This week has been a dream!
EMA/7th - ray, so this is a hypothetical question?
Sandra - Yes, however it depends on the child and how much money the school will lose by expelling him.
Sandra - It's a private school.
EMA/7th - I have children that don't listen, I deal with them on a case-by -case basis
zoe - I suppose you have also shortened the "things" the child must listen to
Sandra - This child finds anything to throw at other children. He gets out of seat, he talks all the time.
Sandra - Losing time at recess, no recess, nothing works. He seeing a private pyschologist now.
zoe - Do you have a support team for special services who might observe?
Sandra - The psychologist was in my room last Wed but it did no good, the child was the perfect student.
Sandra - We do have outside support surfaces but they are not seeing him since if mother is using an outside surface.
EMA/7th - we have to document forever, before the psych ever shows...too bad Sandra
zoe - Do you have doors on your room? Are there windows in the door?
Sandra - The pyschologist insinuated the mother use corporal punishment on him.
Sandra - Yes, but it is very difficult to observe him without him knowing.
Sandra - I'm on the second floor.
zoe - So much for having the psychologist observing viz windows.
EMA/7th - Sandra, the school psych told the mom to corporally punish the child?
Sandra - I had another child, playful, talkative. Yesterday I noticed he was very busy in the am, even more busy in the pm. I asked him
Kathy/5/IA - Is there anyway to have someone in the room for more than a one day observation? Maybe the child wouldn't think they are there to just watch him.
Sandra - what he had for lunch, fruit roll up. Sugar, I suggested to the mother no more sugar, the child was an angel today.
Sandra - Kathy nope.
Sandra - The child goes to the phsyc after school.
lora - I just got a job as a title 1 5th grade co teacher. Do any of you have any ideas on how I can best help the teacher and the kids that need it?
Sandra - He has sessions with him.
Kathy/5/IA - Our title one teachers help the regular classroom teachers with literature circles.
zoe - I have one who hurts others. He is constantly watched by any adult around with the possible outcome placement in our emotionally handicapped class.
EMA/7th - Sandra, does this child have an IEP?
lora - I was told that I would be helping the kids with reading, but I'm really helping them with math and anything else that they may be doing at the time I'm in the class.
Kathy/5/IA - For the last two your our Title teachers scheduled time during the classroom reading period. We basically co-taught using literature circles. This year the title teachers have to spend more of their time with the K-2 kids.
Kathy/5/IA - Are there other title teachers in your school, lora?
lora - There is a title one teacher in the 4th grade.
Kathy/5/IA - Were you just hired during the school year? Maybe the 4th grade title teacher can help you with your schedule.
lora - The teachers were told that I was an english major and that I would be there to help with reading, but I've barely helped anyone with reading. MOstly math and SS
lora - I didn't make the schedule. The teachers made the schedule for me. I just started this job 2 weeks ago.
jennifer - i am really interested in becoming an elementary school teacher, and i have to do a report for college, i was wondering if anyone would answer a couple of questions for me?
Kathy/5/IA - Ask away, Jennifer!
jennifer - does anyone here teach 2nd or 3rd grade?
Kathy/5/IA - Do the teachers have you scheduled during their reading times - lora?
lora - No, they scheduled me around their specials (gym, art, etc.) I go to two classes a day.
duane - I am working on my masters in instructional technology, just thought I would check you all out
jennifer - does anyone here find teaching elementary school rewarding?
ray - can anyone give me some examples of the positive reinforcement the give to children who tend to act up?
Kathy/5/IA - Are there 5th graders who are suppose to see the title one teacher - Lora?
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - Ray...how about proximity of the teacher? The "halo" effect?
Kathy/5/IA - Yes, Jennifer - teaching is a very rewarding career!
ray - what do you mean?
Mountainette 4/WV - jennifer - I don't think we would be teachers if we didn't find it rewarding
lora - what does reverse do?
jennifer - does anyone know any good websites to go to to find out how to go about becoming an elementary school teacher?
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - The closer the teacher, SOMETIMES the better the behavior. The student receives a positive from the teacher which tends to help slow down misbehavior.
zoe - Jennifer, go to your nearest university.
duane - no one does it for money , thats for sure
jennifer - to find information?
duane - seems to me that developing a repetoire with your studies, mutal respect is the key to behaiour
ray - what about give the child an ultimtium and giving them a choice
duane - students, not studies, sorry
ray - give them the power to determine what happens next
Kathy/5/IA - What kind of info are you looking for Jennifer?
duane - a choice about behavior?,, don't know there have to be rules
ray - giving them an ultimatiun?
duane - some things are acceptable , some not, they get to know the lines
ray - let them make the decision
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - Ray...another positive might be eye contact from teacher to student. Ultimatums force a confrontation which usually go against the teacher. You can restate the rules and request compliance.
jennifer - i need to find info on what are the best schools to attend to become and elementary school teacher, how much money one makes, and what else it takes...
zoe - Jennifer, where are you?
ray - i mean like stop acting up or
duane - they can choose of course...but the consequences?
Kathy/5/IA - Have you checked in to any of your area colleges? Salaries depend on each state.
ray - go to the principal
Mountainette 4/WV - I don't know how old you are jennifer, but you might volunteer to go into a classroom to read and then you can get a feel for it
jennifer - zoe, what do you mean where am i?
duane - lang is right, ultimatums usually backfire
jennifer - really, kathy?
Kathy/5/IA - Really .... on what, Jennifer?
ray - how can they backfire?
zoe - What colleges are near you?
jennifer - eastern, northern, anything in illinois pretty much.
jennifer - salary, benefits, schools to attend, etc...
zoe - You/d need to contact the school of education at one of them, ask your questions, and go from there.
duane - students will push you sometime. forcing you to do things you really dont want to do, simplly because you have to maintain your credibilty
Kathy/5/IA - I'm not familiar with the colleges in Illinois. I went to Iowa State University. I felt I was prepared.
jennifer - good idea! i keep thinking to look at their websites, but i should just go directly there..
jennifer - my brother goes to iowa state.
ray - what grade do you teach
Kathy/5/IA - Yes, salaries are set by school districts. Same with benifits, etc...
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - If you make the ultimatum, you MUST go through with it. (That is different than following a behavior plan) Most students in middle school will see the ultimatum as a challenge and take you up on it. Now, instead of the student in your room working, they a
duane - you probably are prepared kathy, just need experience...it is amazing what a year or two will do for you
jennifer - okay, i see....so just look at SPECIFIC schools and areas to find out that information?
duane - again lang is right, especially in middle school , they will challenge you
ray - i'm talking between the ages 3 and 10
duane - specific districts
kaye - Are there any elementary teachers out there?
ray - alternative to spanking and hitting
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - Between the ages of 3 and 10 you can structure acceptable alternatives. They may "choose" but the choices were designed by you.
duane - what do you teach lang/
Kathy/5/IA - I teach 5th grade, Kaye.
Mountainette 4/WV - kaye, I teach 4th
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - Duane - I have Special Ed. grades 6-7-8
kaye - Hi Kathy I taught 4/5th for 10 years
duane - ooooooh tough duty
Kathy/5/IA - This is my 3rd year in 5th - my other 15 years were in 4th.
duane - bd...ld or both?
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - More fun than one person ought to be allowed, but still good kids.
duane - special ed can be very rewarding, but what a challenge
Mountainette 4/WV - this is my 4th year in 4th - 24 years were in 2nd
kaye - do eithe one of you have a state writing test to prepare your students for?
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - I have a Model IV Unit which means I can take any child.
duane - tis funny, even the worst day can be fulfilling...you just have to like and respect the kids
Mountainette 4/WV - I do, kaye
kaye - What kind of test?
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - What do you teach, Duane
duane - can I ask where everyone is from?
duane - junior high social science
kaye - We are finding it so difficult to prepare our children to take this test
Mountainette 4/WV - we have a state writing test in March and the Stanford Achievement test in
Mountainette 4/WV - April
Lang/OH/6-7-8 - Ohio .. the Sun and Fun capital of the Midwest.
kaye - How do your children do as a whole?
Mountainette 4/WV - West Virginia here
duane - near st louis here
