jhuntgt - Do you experience discrimination as a G/T student/teacher in your program? teacher
jhuntgt - discrimination because of ability or interest?
Cammy - Those of you logged on are elementary , middle school, or high school teachers
rebbam - Want to learn more about it because I'm trying to become certified in SPED.
jhuntgt - Certified in what state/
Cammy - I don't feel discrimination, but remarks are made once in awhile.
rebbam - Massachusetts certification. Could happen late this year.
rebbam - I don't think any of the sixth graders I see are gifted or talented.
rebbam - One girl I'm thinking of might come close.
rebbam - All kids treat each other fine in my school.
jhuntgt - Do we worry too much about who is and who isn't ?
Cammy - The G/T kids aren't treated any differently at my school
rebbam - Quite frankly, I'm more worried about the kids with ADHD than anything else.
Cammy - I have a ADHD student in my G/T class and he is doing fine.
rebbam - I've always been told that a smart kid will learn in spite of the environment, and I think most educators believe that's true.
rebbam - Most ADHDs I see are real problem students.
Ev - hi- teacher of 4th grade G & T
Ev - kids are capable but careless
Ev - anyone else find that?
rebbam - I find kids are very sloppy, that's a form of carelessness.
jhuntgt - I have Middle School students who operate underground because they are ridiculed for being "brains".
Cammy - True, or they are afraid to make mistakes
rebbam - I think they have poor writing skills, poor organization skills, in a lot of cases.
rebbam - j, when I was in elementary school in the 1960's the boys would always beat up this one other boy who was a really smart student. Literally beat him up!
Ev - yes, I agree-many don't take pride in their work
rebbam - They lose things a lot; they just don't care.
Ev - anyone teach math?
rebbam - No, but I work with a math teacher.
Ev - what series do they use?
rebbam - Oh man, let me think, it's a dark blue book.
Cammy - I teach regular ed and I'm part time G/T and so many times students aren't aware of if it's a gifted student or regular ed. They realize it only if they see what we are doing.
Ev - Everyday math?
rebbam - They have smaller, more varied exercises to do than what I used to get as a kid. Yes, everyday.
Becky - What level are you talking about?
Ev - 4th grade
rebbam - Grade 6. Negative, positive numbers. Fractions. Reading charts.
Becky - We use Everyday Math. I love it!
rebbam - Mean, median, mod.
Becky - I teach second grade.
rebbam - Mode.
jhuntgt - I'm interested in stories about discrimination because a student has uncovered the fact that race, gender and such might be untouchable but nerds are fair game
Ev - really?? do you use other materials for enrichment or remediation??-Becky
Becky - That's terrible.
rebbam - J, I think a lot of that stuff depends on the individual school. There aren't too many "nerds" in mine.
Becky - I find that the program is so rich that I can meet the needs of all the students with a little tweaking.
Becky - Being smart is really cool in second grade.
Becky - They're all smart in one way or another.
Cammy - That's true
rebbam - This school has two levels, advanced/upper average, and then everybody else.
jhuntgt - Being smart is NOT cool in middle school
Becky - There are so many different ways to be smart. The problem with GT is that they only want the academically strong kids.
OG - I teach a bit more advanced 6th Grade.
otter - I haven't heard from you in a while.
rebbam - I find it's the slow learners who are really at a disadvantage.
otter - I teach part time
OG - To determine how the children can get into the advanced classes in the school I teach, it's all about the standardized tests.
rebbam - Not bad enough to be classified into SPED, but not able to keep up with the other kids.
otter - I have to go OG, I'll write you an e-mail.
OG - Very few children make the faster progressing classes compared to the schools population.
OG - So, where do some of you teach?
rebbam - Maybe they do have a G & T program in the school that I'm not aware of. That's possible.
jhuntgt - Why do we prioritize those with ADHD or SPED when those who need the ceiling raised are a solid group of students with needs that are NOT met
rebbam - Money.
rebbam - Just not enough money to do everything they would like to do.
rebbam - They poured millions into a new school building, but the operation of it is not being funded enough.
jhuntgt - I would like to see the needs of gifted and talented students included in the pool of needs
rebbam - Plus, the main concern of the schools in Massachusetts is now passing the state-mandated achievement tests.
rebbam - In my day the really smart kids were tracked into advanced courses. That wasn't really such a horrible thing to do.
rebbam - Lots of students in my class wound up going to Ivy League colleges.
rebbam - Gotta run! G'night.
ltuce4 - In some schools, smarter students cannot be taught at their level because some schools don not offer the special fast-progressing classes.
jhuntgt - As we perseverate over standards we put inordinate amounts of energy into raising EVERY STUDENT to one standard instead of an appropriate individual level to a standard
ltuce4 - Sometimes the students with slower learning speeds are pushed hard to succeed, but in some cases, the students do not care at all.
mor - what is the difference between a book review and a book report...please help
ltuce4 - Hmmm, well, a book review concentrates a bit more on the opinion of the book, and a report talks more of what the book was about.
helpme - Does anyone think they could help me with a question a student brought up today in my class?
cookie - aGT kid?
Katie - About what helpme?
ltuce4 - What's the question?
helpme - the question is where did the name quadratic formula come from
cookie - have you looked at or sent the kid to ASK DR. MATH? http://www.askdrmath.com - I always make them look it up and tell me
helpme - thank you
Katie - Is everyone in here a gifted teacher and where and what grades do you teach
cookie - a teacher of gifted - 6th grade self-contained
Katie - I teach 4th & 5th in a pull out program in NC
helpme - does anyone in here have anything to do or know anything about NHS
cookie - also Pre-Algebra
jhuntgt - I teach 6-8 in a pull out but have taught K-8 G/t
Katie - My DD is in pre-algebra gifted class now and it sure isn't like the pre-algebra class I taught 6 years ago
jhuntgt - What is NHS?
cookie - what do you mean Katie (I am grading math tests as we chat)
helpme - National Honor Society
cookie - not in 6th grade - sorry but my three kids have been members - one still is
Katie - Her pre-algebra seems like my algebra class was when I was a kid
Katie - Make some wonder what they will cover next year
jhuntgt - I know students in NHS and inquiries about middle school NHS. What about it?
helpme - Who could I alert if the teachers ahead of the program at a particular school were misusing their power
Katie - I taught pre-algebra not in a gifted program and the curriculum was not much different from the regular math
Katie - Misusing power in what way?
jhuntgt - misusing what power HOW?
cookie - you mean polynomials and all?
Katie - When I taught it was just getting kids used to variables. She sets up binomials from word problems and solves them
jhuntgt - Are you all on multiple lines ?
cookie - yes that is what I teach too, Katie
helpme - a student was not let in the program because she got three bad teacher recommendations----at this particular school every teacher is asked about the student if their gpa is above a 4.0---well, the bad recommendations were because they said she was disrespectful to teachers when she was around her friend (the two hang out so much I do not know of any of her other friends)
Katie - A checklist is one part of our qualification process It is filled out by the teacher
helpme - the student asked other teachers about her behavior when she was with this friend and they said she was just happier when she was with the friend and not disrespectful
jhuntgt - Do we need to review definitions of giftedness here?
cookie - well National Honor is more than just grades, it is community service and leadership - if she were disrrespectful that could keep her out
helpme - the student was excellent in my class i her friend was in their too
helpme - He is also an excellent student
flagifted - hi there! just got on. I teach 2/3 full time.
jhuntgt - Many g/t students are not teacher pleasers but dreamers
helpme - that is very true jhuntgt
flagifted - are there any primary teachers on?
cookie - no 6th grade here
helpme - the program let other students in and it is widely known that the groups that they hang out with and them use drugs
jhuntgt - Gt students need knowledgeable advocates within the educational community. There aren't many.
flagifted - you are so right, jhuntgt
jhuntgt - formulas and labels we're back at it. GT kids have individual needs
jhuntgt - See g/t programs are so sparse we can/t even keep a global chat going/ What's wrong with this picture?
jhuntgt - What was the problem ? You just asked if we knew
HABV - I just heard about this chat? Does anyone teach/work in CA?
jhuntgt - Hi HABV Where are you from?
HABV - I teach in Tahoe City and will be the new GATE teacher at our school.
jhuntgt - How about your state department or state association for the gifted?
HABV - I used to teach in Fairfax Co., VA and they had some GREAT programs. I wonder if they have info on their website?
HABV - Challenge Magazine is a great resource for Gifted teachers. Sorry if it's already been mentioned.
jhuntgt - Lot's of info on Hoagies- NAGC CT
jhuntgt - Where can I get Challenge?
HABV - Is HOAGIES a magazine, website?
jhuntgt - Website
HABV - Let me check my bag for Challenges info.
jhuntgt - Hoagies gifted Education Page
jhuntgt - Issues. I want to talk about burning G/T issues
teacher&student - like what, jhunt
HABV - Voila! 1.800.264.9873 is a number you could call. They might send you a FREE one to strike up interest!
HABV - I haven't started with my after school program yet...so I don't have any issues...yet.
jhuntgt - Thanks you're good
teacher&student - like what jhunt
HABV - What state are you in jhunt?
jhuntgt - like kids with intellectual interests being ridiculed thus going underground
jhuntgt - CT
HABV - I haven't had those issues come up with other teachers. I didn't have those issues when I taught in VA or VT either. Sorry...
HABV - Do you teach in a self contained classroom with gifted students?
jhuntgt - What about teachers concerned about fairness to the detriment of bright kids?
jhuntgt - A pull out trying to go with the flow
HABV - Again, since I've just taken this roll on because they couldn't get anyone else...I haven't heard anything...yet. Sorry I'm not any help.
jhuntgt - teacher and student what are your concerns
HABV - This will be our districts last year doing an after school program. So, since I'm a classroom teacher I dont think I'll be able to teach the program next year...unless we think creatively.
jhuntgt - What is done for Gifted students during the regular work day?
HABV - I teach a multiage so my entire day is differentiated for my learners needs.
jhuntgt - where what grade level
HABV - I assume teachers differentiate.... but you know what happens when peole assume. I have a feeling the standards have changed teaching styles...at least where I am
jhuntgt - How have the standards changed teaching styles?
HABV - 1 - 3 in Tahoe City, California
HABV - I think teachers are more into whole group rather than differentiating for learners needs. I'
HABV - This is only my second year in CA...so, I could be wrong.
HABV - Where in CT are you?
jhuntgt - Too much is expected of the classroom teacher but collaboration with the GT community would help
HABV - Collaboration is key! All of the successful pull-out programs that I've been privy too have been in junction with classroom studies.
jhuntgt - g2g
