A Teachers.Net Chat
With
Marjan Glavac
Teacher and Author of
The Busy Educator's Guide to the World Wide Web

Marjan Glavac - Welcome to the lounge. Kathleen asked me if I could do a chat on short notice and I said "sure'! Most of us here in Ontario Canada have finished our first week back to school. Some of us have said that we never really left :-)
Marjan Glavac - Hello Kathleen!
Kathleen - I'm involved in a nice Internet project via e-mail..just sharing children's very brief book reviews with groups from around the world.
sarahw/2/TX - That sounds neat Kat, I just this week started using a poetry and a weather site with my kids--they loved it!
Marjan Glavac - Kathleen, are you aware of the Flat Stanley project? I really like to do the traveling buddy projects with my K-2 students.
mathteach/SC - Kat...what is the project about
Kathleen - Yes, I've seen the Flat Stanley project...nice project
Marjan Glavac - Have any of you seen the Starshine Project from NASA?
mathteach/SC - what exactly is Flat Stanley? I am 8th grade, but I hear it from elementary teachers all the time
Kathleen - sarah, are you collecting weather info from around the globe via the site?
sarahw/2/TX - In fact, I am looking for an updated sports site that would appeal to 2nd graders--not too fussy which sports.
sarahw/2/TX - Kat-nothing that elaborate yet. We are looking at the local weather-few of these kids watch much news :-}
Kathleen - mathteach a UK teacher wanted to celebrate books by releasing balloons, but became aware that balloons are dangerous to animal life/environment. So she is collecting VERY brief book reviews from children all over and sending them out to all of us. "My name is Katie, I am 6 years old, I do to ---school in -----. My favorite book is ----because----" That sort of report.
Marjan Glavac - SC, Flat Stanley is a project based on Jeff Brown's book called Flat Stanley. He's a character in the book that gets flattened when something falls on him. On the upside, he's flat enough to be able to fit inside an envelope and sent anywhere in the world.
Kathleen - Not familiar with Starshine, marjan, tell us
mathteach/SC - Thanks for the info Kat and Marjan
AKP - I have 7 puters and 4 are on the net. I need lots of sites and ideas.
mathteach/SC - very few teachers at my school have computers in their rooms. As far as I know only math and language arts teachers have them. I taught myself all about computers and the web about 4 years ago
Jane/KS - Kathleen, that's our situation, too, only internet in library at this time
Marjan Glavac - Kathleen, Starshine is one of those fantastic science projects that NASA does. I saw a posting in July on K-12 OPPS mailing list (available from www.gsn.org They're putting a satellite into low level orbit with 1000 mirrors on it. So, they're getting 1000 schools to polish the mirrors to be placed on the satellite which will be launched by space shuttle Endeavor in May 1999.
Kathleen - AKP, then this book is for you: The Busy Educator's Guide to the WWW by our guest, Marjan Glavac :-)http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0968331009/teachersnet
Marjan Glavac - In addition, NASA sends out a nice step by step vhs tape to show you how to polish the mirrors; all the equipment needed to do it as well.
Marjan Glavac - Gumbo, ah, gee! I really appreciate the support for the book!
Marjan Glavac - Jane, it takes time, lots of time and patience. Sometimes you're the only one doing this stuff, then others join in.
AKP - I'd really like some good Science and SS sites for first graders. I don't have many resources for these subjects
Kathleen - Are they using Windex on the mirrors??:-)
Jane/KS - Right, Marjan, many of our staff are netting at home, and frustrated we can't at school
Mary K&1 - Glass Plus, Kathleen 8-)
Marjan Glavac - If any of you want a free newsletter, you can go to my site http://www.glavac.com and sign up for it. It contains sites and tips for teachers using the Internet in their classrooms.
sarahw/2/TX - ooh boy! a freebie! Thanks Marjan!
gabi - Marjan, what age group are you talking about?
Marjan Glavac - I also have another freebie 11 Great Tips for Making the Most of Your Time on the Internet. Just put 11 tips in your subject line and send an e-mail to marjan@glavac.com and I'll send it out to one and all :-)
mathteach/SC - AKP...here's one..it says it is for youngsters...http://www.islandnet.com/~yesmag/homepage.html
nj/NH - Thanks Marjan. I just signed up for your newsletter!
Marjan Glavac - Gabi, the NASA project is for middle level students grades 6-8.
Kathleen - Marjan, you mean "11 Tips" not type eleven tips in the subject box, right;-)
Kathleen - The sea and sky site is a good one, I don;'t have the url, though. anyone?
Marjan Glavac - Kathleen, right!
mathteach/SC - AKP...found another for Bill Nye the Science Guy...http://nyelabs.kcts.org
Kathleen - If you want to order Marjan's wonderful book and help teachers.net, use this link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0968331009/teachersnet . If you want to help just Marjan, use his web site to order the book :-) We'll love you either way.
Sandy/k/mo - I am trying to get my school involved in on-line projects.. having a hard time getting them on the web
Sandy/k/mo - I hope this book will inspire them..
Marjan Glavac - Kathleen, thanks! (You should support these great people here at www.teachers.net and buy it from them!
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, you have to go slow. I only do one or two high profile projects, send out news releases to local media--that peaks people's interest!
sarahw/2/TX - Sandy, so many teachers at my school are "just too busy" to mess w/ the 'net. If they only knew what they were missing!
Marjan Glavac - Sarah, yes, right on! There are a lot of "low maintenance" projects I do as well. They're high profile, lots of great learning, but not a lot of teacher preparation needed.
Kathleen - Marjan, you said you have some stateside speaking engagements...where?
mathteach/SC - Marjan...what kind of middle school math web projects do you recommend?
Marjan Glavac - Kathleen, I'm off to North Carolina Association of Educational Communications and Technology in March 1999 to do their keynote and a session on the Internet. Can't wait...it's still cold up here in March!!!
sarahw/2/TX - I made sure all my communication w/ parents had my school email address on it, no one has taken me up on it yet!
mathteach/SC - Marjan..where in NC
Kathleen - well, Marjan, we'll have to capitalize on your connection there!
Sandy/k/mo - Marjan do you get to the midwest?
sarahw/2/TX - Marjan--or TX?
Kathleen - I don;t think any of my families this year have e-mail.
Sandy/k/mo - I know several of mine do my kinders email them
Marjan Glavac - Mathteach: the CASIO classroom is a neat project http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/~mathed/problem.html
sarahw/2/TX - Kat--not sure any of mine do, but I though some might have it at work. Figured it was worth a shot!
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, if you want me there, just ask! Lots of relatives in Ohio!
Kathleen - sarah, that's true, if they are in an office they probably have access. Air conditioning too. :-/
Sandy/k/mo - oh good.. Mo isn't that far :-) will check with school Dist.
Kathleen - Cathie, marjan is coming to NC!!!!
Marjan Glavac - Sarah, you'd be surprised how many may not e-mail you, but they sure know that you're on the Net.
Marjan Glavac - Cathie:Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools
nj/NH - I've put all our teachers' email addresses on our web page. Several parents are using them and the teachers now have more of a reason to learn email.
Marjan Glavac - North Carolina Association of Educational Communications and Technology State Conference
sarahw/2/TX - sandy-ugh. My sympathies!!!
Cathie/NC - do you have the dates of your conference, Marjan?
Marjan Glavac - Cathie, dates are March 3-5. I'll be there on the 5th.
Cathie/NC - Marjan, our small private school just had new Gateways put in on the internet with no training, what is a good thing to start with to train everyone?
Kathleen - Marjan, what is the title of your keynote? do you know yet/
Sandy/k/mo - Marjan.. what would you suggest I do to get the others on the web?
Jane/KS - Went to buy the book..back with a question
Kathleen - what, jane?
Jane/KS - Is there a way I can download at home and take to school on a disk?
Jolinda - Marjan, where's a good place to start my kids on the net/ this is our first full year on line.
Marjan Glavac - Cathie, it all depends what you want to use it for. I like www.gsn.org (Global SchoolNet) because they're teachers and they've been around for a long long time and will help you out with all kinds of projects.
Sandy/k/mo - Jane you want to take a page?
Marjan Glavac - Kathleen, title is "Chalk Board Lessons From The Digital Age"
Jane/KS - We're studying the Marc Brown ARTHUR books and I'd love to be able to use the pbs info at school with my students
Cathie/NC - thanks, Marjan, I will give that to the teacher at our next meeting
Jane/KS - Sure, Sandy
Marjan Glavac - Jolinda, take a look at www.gsn.org They've got some great projects and links to other great places as well.
Kathleen - catchy title, marjan
Sandy/k/mo - There is a program that will capture web pages. I have it in my favorites..
Marjan Glavac - Jane, I'd love to put the book on the WWW. I've been asking a number of sites and may have found one. Hopefully in a week or two I'll know.
Jolinda - Next problem. One computer in my room and 25 kids, very short times that everyone is with me. any ideas?
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, I'm trying out Web Buddy. It has a 30 day trial period. Not bad.
Jane/KS - Thanks, Marjan, the www.pbs.org. has wonderful info about ARTHUR and other kid pbs tv shows
Sandy/k/mo - I like those 30 day trials..
Marjan Glavac - Jolinda, do a newspaper. It gets everyone involved and you can do a lot of the work offline and type it into the computer when it's ready. Kids can take 30 minute turns.
Jolinda - How can we find out when and where your book gets on the web?
Marjan Glavac - Jolinda, Kathleen has given me a number of dates in October, November and December. If it's a go, I'll mention it. As well, I'll mention it in my newsletter. (free!)
Sandy/k/mo - What would you suggest to get the other teachers on line?
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, probably the best is e-mail. Two teachers at our school who never ever used the computer, are now inseparable...they use ICQ to chat twice a day!
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, other teachers use the WWW for personal interests, hobbies, news etc.
Sandy/k/mo - I don't know who they would email... trying to get them to do the McGwire thing and they won't do it
Marjan Glavac - Jolinda, you can sign up for free at my web site http://www.glavac.com
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, another teacher I know is a brand new K teacher. She found an amazing site on the WWW with themes, lesson plans --in short everything for a K teacher.
Sandy/k/mo - I know there is a wealth of info.. I think I am just hitting my head against that wall but won't give up
Sandy/k/mo - Marjan.. I hope you sent her here THIS is the best
azie - I must find out if Marjan's book are available here in Malaysia.
sarahw/2/TX - Some of the teachers at my school have "signed: others up for the daily "Chicken Soup" mailing. It has gotten a few moer of them interested in the net
Jolinda - Don't give up sandy. I teach with three teachers who are resistant too, but coming around.
Sandy/k/mo - azie.. just order on amazon through teachers net
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, I found that frustrating as well. So now, I just go and do it. I share and help out anyone that needs help, but I just leave them at their own pace. There's so much you can do.
nj/NH - sandy, have you tried getting them to do internet scavenger hunts? I find it really gets newbies hooked on the web.
Sandy/k/mo - I won't give up.. I teach kdg. LONG on patience
Jolinda - Where is the chicken soup site?
Marjan Glavac - nj/NH, YES! Scavenger hunts are great. There's a fantastic one coming up called Cybersurfari!
Marjan Glavac - Sandy, ever done a travelling buddy project. Very easy, good educational value, high profile with admin and parents.
Jolinda - tcfg.com has great things to explore (too cool for grownups)
azie - Marjan, how can get educators(veteran) to get hook on the net for the right reason ie education
Marjan Glavac - Thank you all for coming out. I really learned a lot and enjoyed your company. If you want a free newsletter, just go to my site www.glavac.com and sign up. If you want a free 11 Great Tips for Making the Most of Your Time on the Internet, just put "11 Tips" in the subject line and I'll send you out a copy. Good Night all. Thanks!
Marjan Glavac - Azie, as soon as they see and find information they can use in their classes and/or in their daily lives, they will be hooked:-) Good night all!
